Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five The Fan, and here we go.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
On a Friday. It is your Friday, September twelfth edition
the Region one Sports Report. I'm Brian York and as always,
if you want to get in touch with me or
the show, you can do that on our social media pages.
Just search Region one Sports on X on Facebook, or
you can text us at two seven oh five, three
four forty three oh eight. Friday is here. It's a
(00:39):
very dry what else is new? And it's gonna be
a very hot Friday sixty five right now as I
record this in the about six point thirty here in
the am. So that's something. It's gonna get up to
about ninety today in case that's your thing, and I
hope that it's not because we can't be friends. It's
gonna be ninety tomorrow, ninety two on Sunday, ninety one
(01:00):
on Monday, and then roughly ninety early and into the
middle and end of next week. Come on. Well, last
week's weather was nice while it lasted, but I guess
it's over. We're gonna go and you know what's gonna happen.
It's gonna be ninety degrees, hot, sunny, warm, humid, still
dry conditions, no rain in sight, and then in like
(01:20):
a couple of weeks, it's gonna be fifty and then
it's gonna just get cold and be wintertime. That's what's
gonna happen because we can't have nice things. We can't
have nice weather in this area. It's it's never like
last week. Again, that's as nice as it gets. We're
not gonna have seventy degrees in sunny on a nice
day and lows in the low fifties. Now, we're gonna
just go straight from ninety to thirty five and that's
(01:43):
gonna be our weather. So looking forward to that. Nonetheless,
it is gonna be another hot Friday week for the
football season will be hot. It was very nice last week,
not too bad the week before. But week four the
football season will be hot, and we'll get into that
in a little bit. We did have a football game
last night, we did have soccer, we did have volleyball.
So that means we've got scores to go over and
(02:05):
we'll do that right now. First thing we do out
of the gate, talk about scores and stats and things
from your Thursday nights. So here we go. Starting with football.
On a Thursday, Madisonville North Hopkins played host to Paducah,
Tillman and Madisonville with the call it an upset twenty
five twenty two Madisonville beating Paducah. We will come back
(02:26):
to that, hold tight, hold on. More on that in
a moment. In boys soccer, Mayfield Overlying County nine nil.
McCracken County beat Marshall County in a thriller two to one.
University Heights beat Callaway County for two. In girls soccer,
Marshall County over McCracken County, a battle of heavyweights, Marshall
County winning five to three. Paduka Tillman blanked Union County
(02:50):
eight nil. In volleyball, you had three to zero shutouts
Fulton County over Fulton City, Graves County over Saint Mary,
and Mayfield over Hickman County. Those are all your scores
from Thursday, at least what's been reported. I had somebody
on Wednesday say you didn't have all the scores. I
didn't because we did not literally have all the scores.
(03:11):
So that is what's been reported. That's what we've got
as we record this early on a Friday morning, so
naturally where to begin. We're gonna talk football, we are,
We're gonna go heavy football, as we do on Fridays.
I don't want to break the segments up. I don't
want to break the train of thought up, So I
will save the thoughts on Madisonville and Paducah here for
just a moment. Let's start though with soccer. In girls' soccer,
(03:35):
you had Marshall County over McCracken County five to three,
a battle of like I said earlier, too heavyweights in
the region and Marshall County. I don't know if you
could say they're quote unquote separating themselves. But right now
this region and I set on Wednesday, if you're power ranking,
Callaway County's number one, Marshall County's number two. I think
(03:55):
that was the statement last night, and Marshall County is saying, yes,
were one of the top two, not top three, not
top four, not top five. We are one of the
top two teams in this region. We usually are. But
now it's clear once again this year that statement is
as true as ever. They're only blemish, they're only lost
(04:15):
on the season, a one nil lost to Calloway County.
Callawai is still unbeaten. Not perfect, they've had ties, but
unbeaten on the season. Marshall one lost one tie that
lost him came to Calloway County last night. They played
McCracken County for the second time and last time in
the regular season. They beat them one nill back at
McCracken County in late August and then a five to
(04:37):
three much a lot more scoring in this one, a
five to three win at home last night. Now I
don't have stats from this one. That's okay, it's next day.
Not upset about that, but you just look at the
difference in these two teams, even in how they've gone
on the season. And Marshall, you know, a very senior
led team at the top, but their top three goal
scorers Addie Wall Riley Tege Cheney going into last night's
(05:02):
game nine goals for Wall, Teague had eight, seven for Green.
Pretty balanced. That's pretty balanced for Marshall County and that's
what makes them. That's what makes them tough. Tough to defend.
Three four, five girls on the field that can go
get a goal when they're on the field, and you
got to respect all of them former Kraken County. Again,
(05:23):
lots of talent, but you again look at the goal disparity.
Matty ledgerwould one of the best players, maybe the best
scoring and player in the region. Fourteen goals for Ledgerwood
going into last night's game, second on the team Mackenzie
Berget with four. So you go fourteen to four, and
that's a big difference in Marshall County and McCracken County,
(05:44):
at least this season. And by the way, in case
you're wondering, Callaway County number one team in the region
when you look at their scoring and talking about teams
that are tough to defend, they have two juniors, a freshman,
well a junior, so they have three and a freshman
in the top four. Raylen McClure fifteen goals, provide thirteen goals,
(06:08):
Arenette twelve goals. Lenkey with eleven goals fifteen thirteen twelve
eleven again all underclassmen. That's why they're eleven to Oh
and by the way, I said they had a tie earlier,
they don't. I was looking at the wrong page. So
eleven and oh, perfect, unbeaten, unblemished. So Marshall flexing showing
(06:28):
that they're one of those top two teams. Callowei is
the top team. And even though I think you can
still keep McCracken in the conversation as a threat to
win the region, you can still keep murray in a
conversation as a threat to do things and upset teams
and maybe get into a tournament situation where they can
prevail it. Right now, this is starting. You know, I
(06:49):
said for a long time there's four or five teams
in girls soccer that are at the top in good
parody and good competition. Right now this is a two
team race for that regional title. Now McCracken is still
in the conversation, but right now this is a It
just starts to feel like it's gonna be Callawair Marshall.
If I was a betting man, and I often am,
(07:10):
I would just place my bets my odds on those
two teams as being the two teams most likely to win.
And keep in mind mccracking and Marshall in the same district.
So that was a big district win for the lady
Marshalls last night and puts them in the driver's seat,
in control large and in charge number one spot in
that district. So that's how things are going on the
girl's soccer side. On the boys' soccer side, it was
(07:33):
McCracken County taking down Marshall County and the Marshalls have
been on a bit of a slide. They've lost four
of their last five. McCracken County starting to pick things up.
They've won their last two, really two of their last four,
but that's considering. They played Evansville in Lake Central, Indiana,
so take that for what it's worth. They beat Puduka
Silman four to one and then beating Marshall County last
(07:54):
night two to one. Now do have stats for this one,
because that's awesome. Shout out to their coaching staff and
their coaches and their people forgetting it done. But stats
in this one. That was a two to one win
Attingip with both goals Mason atting Up with two goals
in the game last night, and then Lane Grace with
five goalkeeper saves in a two to one game. That's
(08:16):
pretty critical. One player with two goals, goalkeeper has five saves.
And McCracken County getting a big again district win, and
I think you're seeing a little bit again, it's a
two to one game that could switch, that could flip,
that could go the other way quickly and easily. But
I think on the boys side, you're seeing Murray still
kind of the team to beat, not kind of they are.
(08:37):
They are still undefeated or at least unbeaten. They do
have one tie on the season. And then you look
at you know, Callawai County has been very good. They've
got what four losses and a tie so far. They
tied McCracken earlier in the season lost to Marshall, so
you kind of see the parody there. McCracken now with
(08:59):
two over Marshall in that district, so they're in charge
of that district, and you just kind of see how
things are kind of scaling from there. Murray's the team
everybody's chasing. I would probably go with muccraken County in
that two spot, probably the Calawai County could certainly fit
in there, and then Marshall's somewhere after that. So that's
a look at some other scores from around the region.
(09:21):
That's a look at our soccer from a Thursday. Now
we turn our attention to football. We did have a
score from Thursday, As I said, hold on tight, we'll
come back to it Madisonville with the Yeah, you can
call it an upset, but it shouldn't be a surprise
or a shock, and it's really not that big of
an upset, I don't think. But we'll talk about it
(09:42):
when we come back. As Madisonville wins twenty five to
twenty two, we'll review that one and then preview tonight's
games that and more when we return on Region one
Region one Sport.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Nope, it's not Ashton Coucher. It's Brian York, equally handsome,
smart on ninety nine to five The Fan John Sports.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
As we move along on your Friday edition of the show,
we talk high school football, We review and then preview
week four. So we did have one game last night,
Puduka Tilman goes down and goes down, they go down
to Madisonville, and then they went down to Madisonville. Twenty
five twenty two ends up being your final score. And
I think if you paid attention to it, and maybe
(10:37):
some of you didn't, because I talked to a lot
of people last night at a middle school baseball game
who had no idea Tillman was playing on a Thursday.
So maybe you missed it. Maybe you just are you're
waking up and you're like, wait, that was last night.
But if you did pay attention, it was a game
that that uh Tilman had every chance to win and
every chance to win. And to be honest, you know,
(10:59):
as much as Mattisonville did to earn that win, it
was mistakes and it was things that kind of Tillman,
you know, one step forward, two steps back was kind
of the feel of that game last night for the
Blue Tornado, an eighteen game win streak comes to an end,
their first loss in the regular season since twenty twenty two.
(11:21):
I mean, it was due and you're due. You're not
gonna just just keep winning your due. And as I
said A wise man said on Wednesday's show, that is
not a fun place to go play. It is not
a fun place to go play. It's not call it
home cooking, call it what you want. When when Madisonville
goes on the road, they are a different team and
(11:43):
it tends to be a chance of a different outcome
than when they're at home. This was a game that
I don't think Mayfield ever led. I tried to go
back and look at that but I you know, from memory,
I don't think they ever led. In fact, let's look
at it. Yeah, it was eight to seven Madisonville after
the first quarter. Madisonville did score first and went up
(12:05):
eight to nothing. Then it was fifteen to fourteen Madisonville
with the lead after halftime, and then of course en
route I don't know what the end of the third
quarter score was, but en route to that twenty five
to twenty two win, you kind of look at how
the game flowed. I said going into this, Madisonville's going
to run the football. This was a game of two
very different styles. Tillman is that you know, they want
to hit the home run. They want to go, you know,
(12:27):
spread the field. They want to get their playmakers in
space and let them do their thing. Madisonville wants to
line up and run the football, and then line up
and run the football, and then line up and just
just for good measure, run the football. And it was
a question of field position, limiting mistakes. You know that
game plan works, like I said, if it's if you
can can control field position, time of possession, limit your mistakes.
(12:52):
Get a lead, and they did. And when you get
a lead and you play that style of offense, things
typically work out well for you. But again, a lot
of self inflicted wounds for Tillman and that ends up
being the difference. They had every chance, every opportunity to
win that game, probably, maybe arguably should have won the game.
(13:13):
Madisonville on their first drive of the game even saw
a fifty three yard rush by Marquez high Tower, who,
like I said, has been around for eight years. I
feel like every year we've done this show, we have
talked about him, and I'm not even joking when I
say that he finished with ninety one yards, but he
had the touchdown and the two point or they had
the two point conversion to go up eight nothing. Tilman
(13:35):
ended up with a good response. They scored a rushing
touchdown by DJ Wilson. Both teams traded touchdowns. Again, like
I said, when you come out and get the lead,
and they did eight seven after the first quarter, eight
nothing after the first drive, that style of football can
can work, and both teams again traded touchdowns. Madisonville scored,
(13:59):
the Tilman scored dead matter, Tillman still trailing fifteen fourteen. Boy,
that two point conversion was huge. At the half. According
to the article, things went sideways for the Blue Tornado
out of halftime. On their first possession, Avery Thompson dropped
what would have could have probably should have been an
eighty yard touchdown on third down, and then Madisonville brought
(14:22):
pressure on the punt. Tilman's punt went to just the
twenty six yard line, where Madisonville got it and easily
returned it to go up twenty two to fourteen. I
said mistakes, Tilman shooting themselves in the foot, a drop
thurned out conversion that not only should have been a conversion,
but a touchdown, which would have completely changed the direction
of the game. Again, we don't know if it would
(14:44):
change the outcome, but certainly the direction. And then a
bad situation at a bad punt basically gifts Madisonville a
touchdown and a chance to stay up eight points. Tilman
turned the ball over downs the following possession, and a
fumble on their following possession led to a thirty yard
field goal that put the Maroons up two scores. Timan
(15:07):
would get a score with about a minute and a
half left to play. They also scored the two point
conversion to put them within three, Which that's what you need,
right You're down, you got a chance to go for two,
get it to at least a field goal opportunity if
you can recover the football. They got it to the
field goal opportunity twenty five to twenty two, but then
the on side kick attempt went out of bounds and
(15:29):
the Maroons were able to run out the clock twenty
five to twenty two. So Madisonville, to their credit, did
everything they needed to do to win this football game,
but the game went into their favor. It had to
be low scoring, it had to be a little ugly.
It had to be a game where Tillman made the mistakes,
and they did, and that's what favored Madisonville to get
(15:50):
the win. And a couple of quick things, I'll say,
somebody said this was one of the biggest upsets of
all time. It's not. It's an upset, but this is
a Class five, a football team that is ranked in
the top ten in their class, beating a for a
football team that shouldn't be considered that big of an upset. Now, Tillman,
when you flip it and you say, regardless of class,
where are these teams ranked, Tillman out ranks them by
(16:11):
about fifteen spots in the overall rankings, Tillman was considered
a top five overall team. So yes, in terms of
talent and in terms of expectation, this was an upset.
But Madisonville is a very very good five a football
team who right now is ranked who right now I
think will win their district, which is the district my
(16:34):
team is in Graves County. I don't think it's gonna
be Owensboro. I think it's gonna be Madisonville. I think
they right now are the better team, or at least
the best team in that district. So by those measures,
not that big of it. And now, if this was a
team that had only won a game so far, or
had been winless going into this week, or you know,
(16:55):
just had had been good but not good enough, and
then they come out and surprise everybody with the win,
that makes it a massive upset, not massive, still an upset,
but this is a good Madisonville team, So even though
still an upset, still shouldn't be that big of a surprise.
As I said Wednesday, when you're playing at Madisonville, this
certainly shouldn't have been a surprise. Had this been at Tilman,
(17:18):
maybe a little bit, maybe a little bit, but at
Madisonville not shocked at all. Never once did I check
the score last night, tune in to see what was
going on, and was surprised by Madisonville leading that football game.
And then, as the case I laid out, Tillman had
every opportunity and probably maybe should have won the football game,
(17:39):
but things favored Madisonville at home. Their style of play
needed those game conditions to go the way they did,
and they did and then get the win. Now is
the sky falling? Is the world over? Is Tillman just
done for the season. No, they'll be fine. They move
on to from here to a you know, good but
not great, not good enough Franklin Simpson team who they'll
(18:02):
get at home next week and who they'll beat. Then
they play Allen County Scottsville, who's not good. Then they
play Logan County, who's good. Logan County's good. That's the
next challenge I said on Wednesday. If you survive Madisonville.
They didn't. But if you survive Madisonville, then Logan County
becomes the next circle of the calendar game that's October third,
that's going into fall break. But that's it. I mean,
(18:25):
at worst, at worst, let's say Tillman loses that game.
They're not because it's at home. This is gonna end
up being a one wins, one loss season, and they're
still the favorite or a favorite to win for a
football So you know, the sky is not falling, the
world is not over. It was a bad game. It
was a game where Tilman had looked probably as bad
(18:47):
as they've looked in two or three years, didn't play
good football, didn't execute well when they needed to, and
they come out with a loss. Maybe the thing they
need to propel them going forward. Maybe we'll see. I
do hate that though, and I've said in the past
when people say sometimes the team needs to lose, no
they don't. That's not the goal of the game. You
can still learn lessons and win. I'm sure if they'd,
(19:11):
you know, escape that game, you know, twenty eight to
twenty five, they wouldn't be just acting like nothing's wrong.
They'd probably be going, no, we got things wrong. Don't
have to have a loss to teach you that. But
sometimes that loss can sting in a way that helps
you in a way that a win doesn't. So we'll see.
(19:31):
Time will tell, We'll see. But they're gonna be fine.
They're gonna be fine. As for what it tells us,
Like I said about Madisonville, all right, they're in the
district with Graves County and Marshall County. They play Marshall
County next week at Marshall County. They don't play Owensborough
till the end of the season. Owensborough's not been good
this season. They just haven't, not not to their standards.
(19:55):
And so even though we started the season thinking Madisonville
might be a little over range, maybe they're rated just fine.
Maybe they are right where they are supposed to be,
which is not good for Graves in Marshall County, just not.
But that is our loan football game, our review of
a week four football game. Already on a Friday, plenty
(20:17):
to preview, plenty to talk about a couple of other
Marquee matchups coming up tonight. A must win game is
what it feels like for Graves County after an zero
to three start, looking for their first win in Week four.
That is unfamiliar territory, somewhere they a place that program
hasn't been since twenty eleven, and it just feels like again,
(20:41):
even though not a district game, not a game that
has any ramifications at all on your playoff outlook. Man,
it feels like this is a big, big week. This
is kind of the big week for Graves. A lot
of pressure to go out and get that win tonight.
We'll talk about it. Marshall County goes to Murray, good luck,
(21:01):
We'll talk about it. McCracken County Mayfield, McCracken catching Mayfield
off their blowout loss to Tillman. We still got to
talk about that and more so, let's take a break,
catch our breath, drink some coffee. We'll come back. We'll
have that when we return on Region one.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
Region one Sports in for the Deep Dive.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
I Reagion on Sports. This is our final segment on
this Friday edition of the show before we get into
previewing our football games for tonight. I do feel it
important to take a moment to pause and reflect and
(21:40):
remember and say a moment, say a word here for
a moment to the passing of Jason Holmes. For those
that are not involved in the Graves County community, that
name not ring a bell to you, but for those
in the Graves County community, that name clearly has meant
the world to so many Peopleson Holmes was a husband,
(22:01):
a father, a coach, a mentor to several of those
coaches that are currently on staff, and was a very
big figure in the football world in Graves County. And
I think it's underselling it to say he was a
very beloved figure. He was a dear friend to so
many and man, just the outpouring of people and the
(22:22):
words that they've had to say about him in the
last day, it's just been incredible to read. I mean,
that is how you know you've lived a life well lived.
The words that have been said, the outpouring of support,
and the way the community has had kind of rallied
around him during his battle with cancer and then has
(22:43):
sort of rallied around his family and rallied around his son,
And it's just been incredible to witness, even from afar.
Even more incredible. You know, he passes away yesterday, his
son Nate Holmes, goes out last night and plays in
his eighth grade football game. That's simply incredible. And you know,
(23:05):
lost for words when I saw the picture and saw
that he had done that. But what a loss for
the community, what a loss for his family and coach
chasing Holmes gone home, but certainly gone too early now.
To be honest, I don't really have a good way
to segue or to make a segue from that and
(23:25):
to what we need to talk about next. I just
knew that if we did not start off this segment
talking about it, there was a good chance, knowing me,
that I would go the entire show without mentioning it.
And I did not want to do that. So let's
all continue to keep his family and our thoughts in prayers,
especially as we go and watch our football teams play tonight,
and especially if you are in that Graves County community
(23:47):
and you go out to watch your Eagles play tonight.
The Eagles zero to three for the first time since
twenty eleven, uncharted territory in a lot of way for
Graves County. They've only had two losings seas since the
twenty eleven season. That was one of them. Now, that
was a I believe four win team. They were five
(24:09):
and six in twenty eighteen. This has been a very
consistent and proud program. So oh in three is uncharted territory.
I didn't even go back and look at the last
zero to four season. I think it came in the
mid odts right in the two thousand and like three
four five, somewhere in there. But this is not what
(24:29):
they want to talk about. Well not what we thought
we'd be talking about, but here we are talking about it.
Oh and three Graves County two and one Union County.
Graves County's offense has struggled. I mean, look at the
teams they've played, Mayfield, Tillman, Murray. Now. Two years ago
they struggled against Mayfield and Tillman. Their offense didn't look good,
and that team came out and won non football games. Now,
(24:51):
this team is certainly not on pace or on track
to win nine football games. That would be an incredible
feat and quite a turnaround. But that does not mean
they cannot start turning this thing around. But if they're
going to, it's gonna have to start tonight. Man, if
they can't get the win tonight, this is the easy
game of what's left on the schedule. This is an
easy one of what's left for Graves County, Union County Tonight.
(25:16):
Then they host, but they have to play Owensborough next week,
Madisonville at Madisonville the week after that. They just beat
Tillman then they go to Apollo Apollo again, another winnable game.
They're zero to three, but that's at Apollo, and that's
right before fall break. Then you've got Meehlnberg County. Certainly,
I think, no matter how the season goes a win
(25:36):
for Graves County, I'm sorry. Then you got Marshall County,
which that win streak is in jeopardy this season, by
the way. Then Milanberg County, the McCraken County. There are
still if you look at their schedule, let's take Owensboro
Madisonville out of it. Those teams are gonna be favored
against Graves County. You get the win tonight. That's one.
(25:57):
You certainly will have an opportunity to beat a Paulo.
That's two. You've got a long streak against Marshall County.
Although in jeopardy this season, that could be a third win,
could be I'm not gonna bank on it yet. Meilenberg
is a fourth win. McCracken County could be your fifth win.
So now let's say you're the favorite in the games
I just listed. I don't think you will be the
(26:19):
favorite in every one, but let's say you are. That's
still five potential wins on the table that you at
least should go in feeling like you're gonna go get
a victory. So now you just got to figure out
can you upset Owensboro in Madisonville. I don't know. I
don't think so gonna be a heavy underdog. But my
point is, you get a win tonight, this could could
(26:41):
start turning things in your favorite to all of a sudden,
we forget your OH and three we go. Man, they
man tough start, tough schedule, but still Grapes County football
and they turned it around. But if you lose tonight,
now you're looking at four wins, maybe three, like this
could be a very tough seat. And that's this look
(27:01):
that's coming from the diehard. That's coming from the guy
who would pit Graves County to beat the Cowboys because
I believe and believe in Blue. But this is reality
setting in that this is that important of a ball
game tonight for Graves County. You hate to say make
or break, but it really is, because if if they
can't figure out a way to win tonight's game, this
(27:24):
could be not an ohero and four team, not an
OH in five team and OH in sixteen. That's unthinkable,
and it's not been the case in the past, even
when they have started oh and two one in three.
They've had one in three starts. We're in those three losses.
They looked terrible blowouts and then still turned around and
had really good seasons and made a push in the playoffs.
(27:48):
It's all still ahead of you, that's my point. But man,
tonight is so crucial, so crucial, and and really and
my point being kind of uncharted territory for Graves count football.
And again, it's been a brutal and tough schedule, no
doubt about it. But listen, even coach Deebow will tell
you that's that's their fault too. They this is the
schedule they have. This is a schedule they wanted. So
(28:12):
they're not making an excuse for it. This is you know,
they control that, and they control an opportunity to get
a win to Night Union County. Again, very different style
of football. They are going to run the football like
I talked about Madisonville, and they keep it simple too,
by the way. They're gonna line up and they're gonna
show you one look and if it works, they'll stay
with it. And if it doesn't, they'll they'll change and
(28:32):
then if that look works, they'll stay with it. And
if that doesn't, then they'll go to the next set.
They'll go to that. Like they just keep changing looks
until something works, and when it works they don't. They
don't get away from it. They throw the football at
eighty two yards a game, they run the football at
two hundred and forty four yards per game. Two and
one on the season with wins over Critney County and
Cardwell County. Now they lost big to Madisonville. That's the
(28:54):
good thing because Crittinin and Cordwell not exactly world beaters.
Those are wins. Those are wins where they look good.
But the one really good team they played, they did
not look good. Strength of schedule favors Graves County. Graves
has been tested certainly more than Union County, so their
wins may be a little deceptive, is my point. But
(29:17):
this is still a good Union County team that is
traditionally right in the thick of things in the three
A football playoff picture. The Eagles, as I said, struggling
on offense themselves, throwing the football right now at just
seventy two yards a game, running the football at eighty
nine yards a game. Their goal tonight is to try
to run the football. Their goal tonight is to try
(29:37):
to get things going on the ground because teams teams
are just kind of smothering the pass game and they're
having success stop in the run game by just basic coverage.
So they want to force the defense to respect the
run game so that maybe they can start getting that
passing game going. So the Gold to Knights to run
the football and show that they can run the football
(29:59):
because they feel like they're going to I have to
run it well to get a win. But the Eagles
in a hole tonight. I'm picking Graves County because I
think there's fight. I think there's a lot of you
know what and vinegar running through their veins this week.
I think they are adjusting as coaches, which is what
you want to hear. They're not just going out week
after week and saying, oh, we're fine, we're fine. No,
(30:20):
They're making changes and they're trying to figure out what's
going to click and work. And I think it clicks
and works tonight. I think Graves County will finally get
in the win column and give them selves a shot
at still having a very good football season. Moving on.
Not the only game on the schedule tonight, Marshall County
goes to Murray. Good luck, especially when you've got to
(30:42):
go there. The Marshalls have been good this year. Two
and one. You could argue should be three and zero.
One thing that I like about Marshall County this season.
Two years ago, they get in these kind of ball
games where they've got to really fight to stay in
the game and really fight to get over the hump,
and they get blown out because they just didn't have
that fight in a few years ago. Last season they
(31:03):
had the fight at them, they just weren't as good.
This season, they're improved and they've got that fight and
they're two and one, and again you should probably be
three and oh. A two point loss to Cadwell County.
Some things didn't quite break their way, but if they did,
one of those fumbles doesn't happen, Just one of those
calls doesn't get made, like they should be three and oh.
(31:24):
But the Marshall's on the season. Looking at their numbers,
they are one hundred and forty five yards passing per game,
one hundred and ninety one yards rushing per game, Jake
Thomason has been really good one thirty one a game himself.
The sophomore stepping up in the backfield for the Marshals.
Neilan Jasek has always been a good quarterback, he just
(31:44):
hasn't had the opportunity to show it. This season, he's
getting that opportunity and he's been a really good quarterback
what we all knew, and he's getting a chance to
show it off. Murray though a little bit different of
an animal. Murray's offense it's tough to stop that's and
these two teams they don't match up well. Murray's got size,
(32:05):
Marshall does too, but Marshall's strength is going to be
in the trenches. They've got big dudes. They can move
the line of scrimmage and they can do things defensively
on that line of scrimmage. But Murray can match that,
and Murray is better in the skills department. So this
is not a great matchup, And in football it's all
about the matchup. You can be a good football team,
you can be, but styles and matchup can determine an outcome.
(32:27):
And this is just a matchup that tends to favor Murray.
They're just good in the spots that you need to
be good in. WHT Robbins two hundred and forty eight
yards passing per game, eight touchdowns, one pick. So far.
As a team, they run the football a two hundred
and twenty six yards per game with nine rushing touchdowns.
Robbins leads the team at seventy four yards per game.
I think that's gonna have to change. I don't think
(32:48):
even though he's a dual threat, he can pull the run,
he keeps the ball moving. I love all of that,
but somebody in that backfield is going to have to
step up and take over that rushing lead for them
to be the real threat we think they can be.
But it's at Murray. Gonna be a tough one tonight
for Marshall. I'm picking Murray, but this is a kind
of a litmus test for Marshall. Can you stay in it?
(33:10):
Can you compete like Graves County did last week? Go
into the halftime break feeling like you have an opportunity
to win that game, giving yourself an opportunity to win
no matter the outcome. Can you can you do you know,
put together two or three quarters of good football even
if you lose that's what we're watching for tonight. That's
the that's something they have not done the last few years. So,
(33:32):
like I said, even in a loss, you can see
the improvement Marshall County. That's what we're looking for tonight.
Moving on McCracken County and Mayfield, Traditionally this has been
a good series. Traditionally this has been, you know, not
as lopsided between these two teams as it tends to
be when teams play Mayfield. McCracken County with four wins
(33:56):
in the series. They've only been playing again since twenty thirteen.
The last McCracken County win, though, came in twenty twenty.
Mayfield beat them the next season in a close one
thirty two to fourteen, forty nine to twenty six the
next year forty eight to fourteen the next year, and
last season just thirty five to twenty one. This is
(34:17):
not a slam dunk for Mayfield. It's a pretty good layup,
but it's not a slam dunk. McCracken County comes in
one in two on the season, Mayfield one in or
two to one on the season. The Mustangs stat wise
throwing the football as a team two hundred and eleven
yards per game, eight touchdowns, five picks total, running the
(34:41):
football at one hundred and six yards per game with
seven rushing touchdowns. My concern for for Mercracken County is,
I don't know. I don't know if their offense is
going to be good enough to get the win. Their
defense might be, we'll see, but I don't know if
the offense is going to move the football well enough
on the road at Mayfield to keep that in mind.
Mayfield again obviously coming off of a lopsided, stinging loss
(35:03):
to Padukah Tillman. Traditionally that means they're going to respond big,
but we'll see if tradition continues. Mayfield so far this
season again two and one passing the football at one
hundred and ninety nine yards per game. Three different quarterbacks
have thrown a pass for Mayfield so far. I don't
think if we you know, you know, seening Gray Robbins
(35:24):
in all three games, but they'll go with Sawyer Stintson,
and they'll go with elite Kirby as well at times.
Although those guys are you know, one's three for four,
one is three for three. So we'll see. Running the
football though, Josei England. Man, he's good as a team.
They're one hundred and twenty seven yards per game with
ten rushing touchdowns England and eighty one yards per game.
(35:44):
But it just feels like Tonight's night feels like the Cardinals.
You know. Give the football to England, chew up yards,
move the football consistently, and they're going to get the win.
Mayfield at home. Yeah, you gotta go with especially coming
off the loss. What else we got tonight? Calloway County.
(36:05):
Calloway County coming off a win last week, they got
a chance at another win. Calloway County, the Lakers, who
were winless last season, who had been on a long
losing streak going into this season. They could end up
going into Week five of the football season three to one.
That's insane. But you play the schedule you need to play.
(36:26):
You play the schedule that's right for you. And they
are a win over Fulton County last week. They've got
Ballad Memorial this week and they're gonna win. I'm just
gonna go ahead and give you my pick. They're gonna win.
Ballard struggles to move the football at all, fifty six
yards passing per game, sixty nine yards rushing per game,
two passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns. That's been it so
(36:47):
far for Ballad. They've been shut out the last two weeks.
Calloway County on the season, you look at their numbers,
one hundred and seventy yeah, one sixty nine in the air, sorry,
five touchdowns, two interceptions, two sixty five on the ground.
Logan Smith, because he was amazing last week pushing that
total up. Logan Smith, the senior won seventy seven seven
(37:09):
touchdowns on the season so far. I think he's gonna
be hard for Baller to stop tonight. I don't think
he repeats last week, but man, he's gonna have a
good game and Callaway County's gonna get a convincing win tonight.
And the last, but not least, speaking of Fulton County,
who they beat last week, Fulton County, they are playing Bruceton.
(37:30):
I know I'm still saying that wrong. Somebody told me
how to say it right. I'm still gonna get it wrong.
But they play a team out of Tennessee, Fulton County.
It's been rough sledding. Don't know anything about their opponent,
but so far this season, the Pilot's one hundred and
ninety two yards passing per game, six touchdowns, one pick.
Not terrible, it's not that's not bad at all. Running
the football at one oh two per game. I think
Fulton County gets a win to nine. I'll just go
(37:50):
ahead and say it, just because why not. Fulton County
go get a win tonight, get in the win column
rooting for the Pilots tonight. So there it is. There,
you have it. There. It was out of time, out
of topic. Enjoy the games, Enjoy the weekend. We'll be
back on Monday to break it down. Until then, this
has been Region one Sports
