Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five the fab anyway we go
on your Friday.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
It is a Friday, September fifth edition of the Region
one Sports Report.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
I'm Brian York. Hope you're doing well on this Friday.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
As always, you can connect with us and the show
on social media on Twitter on x at Region one Sports,
on Facebook at Region one Sports Report, and on the
phone number the text line at two seven h five.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Three four forty three eight. How you doing on a Friday?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
That's right, we've made it to Friday, the short work week,
and then it's here, and I'm alright with that. If
it wants to be a short work week every week,
we could just go to four days. I'd be and
be fined by me. But it's here. Week three of
the football season. Good matchups tonight. We'll get into all
of that later on. Here in the show. They're calling
for some potential ugly as is maybe weather tonight, let's

(01:03):
hope not. I don't mind the rain, just don't want
the win and the potential for severe weather. Don't don't
like that. Don't mind the rain, don't like the other stuff.
But that who knows. It's that time of the year.
It's gonna be warmer today than it has been the
last few days, and gonna be warmer today than it
will be the next few days. We're talking a high
of eighty five today. Get this Tomorrow, Sunday and Monday,

(01:26):
it's gonna be in the mid seventies. Lows in the
mid to low fifties. All right, then let's do that,
but a little warmer for this week three of the
football season. Again, we'll get into all the matchups, break
those down, and talk about that more in a moment. First, though,
let's get into scores from around the region on your
Thursday night. Not a heavy night of action on the

(01:49):
pitch or on the volleyball court, but we do have
some scores to report, so let's do it. We'll start
with volleyball last night. Now, there were more games than this,
but these were the only ones were reported as of
what six point thirty in the morning on your Friday,
So I'm sure those will get reported later, but as
of now, these are the only ones reported. Three games

(02:09):
to talk about. You had Ballert of Memorial over Carlile
County three sets to none, CFS over CCA in Holy
War three to one and Mayfield over Saint Mary three
sets to none. That's your volleyball from Thursday in soccer.
In girls soccer, you had McCracken County all over Mayfield
twelve zip twelve not a twelve nill in a big

(02:31):
shutout there, McCracken over Mayfield. Then you had Paduka Tilman
Overgraves County two to one. Those are very different scores.
That's McCracken County, Domodate's Mayfield. You have a blowout, then
you have a Knell Botty a two to one game
for Tilman over Graves. In boys soccer, Marshall County edges
Madisonville North Hopkins one nil and then Paduka Tilman over

(02:52):
Graves County three to one. Those are your scores from
around the region on a Thursday. So things that stood
out well obviously in boys soccer a one nil Marshall
County went over Madisonville. Pretty good stuff. The one goal
was scored by the way by Colton Snyder as he
got the goal and Marshall gets the win. One save
was all that Marshall had in the ballgame. Carson Lovett

(03:15):
getting the one goalkeeper save, and that's the difference in
a one nil ballgame with Marshall getting the win over Madisonville.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
It's pretty good stuff there.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
And then how about this one, Paduka Tillman gets their
first win of the season, beating my Graves County Eagles
three to one. That's right, Tillman went into that ballgame,
went into that match up, they were zero to five
on the season. Now, they did lose by one goal
to Hopkins County Central and by one goal to Mayfield,
so they had had a couple of close matches. But

(03:44):
then beating Graves County last night, by the way, the
first win for coach Reid, So congratulations to coach Tanner
Reid on his first win with the Blue Tornado over
Graves County last night. On the girl's side, Paduka Tilman
getting that two one win over Graves County, that's their
third win of the season. They are now three and
three on the season. So Paduka Tilman not a team

(04:05):
we talk about in view in that sort of top
tier of the region as far as a true regional
title contender, but they are a very good mid tier team.
And again a very good example of was soccer in
this region is so good and so tough, and you
got to bring it on each and every night, so
Tilman getting to win there in a close one to

(04:26):
one over Grave, So those things obviously stood out. Now,
I gave out the text line number earlier. I'll give
it out again. It's two seven oh five three four
forty three eight. Several of you taking advantage of that,
and it's been it's been a lot of fun. It's
been fun.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
It's it's the best way to get in touch with me. Listen.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
I'll admit there's a couple of days during the week,
on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I almost forget to check it.
So don't think I'm being rude or a jerker anything.
It's sometimes when I don't do the show, I don't
think to check it. But we did get a text
earlier this week about soccer and h you know. The
text was pointing out that Marshall is now in the
same district with McCracken. Now, I thought that was true,

(05:06):
and the reason I haven't mentioned it is because even
though I thought Marshall was now in the same district
with McCracken, it's not how it's listed on KHSAA. McCracken
is still listed as District one, Marshall still listed as
District two. So if somebody would like to set the
record straight on that, I would greatly appreciate it, because
going into the season, I thought they redistricted. I thought

(05:29):
that was changed. Maybe it has and they haven't updated
on the on the website, but as far as the
official KHSAA website is concerned, they're not in the same district.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
So there's that.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
And this is why I like having the ability for
you to text me and be able to give you
that number, because just like somebody texted to say, hey,
let you know, you should talk about that, and I should.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Now I don't know if.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
It's true, and so I like having the text line
because I know, as I'm asking this, somebody's going to
text in and can firm so let me know for
sure what's going on there, because again I thought going
into the season they had redistricted, but according to the website,
they have not. Maybe that doesn't kick until next season.
Maybe that's the hang up. I don't know, but I
know somebody will set the record straight again that number

(06:15):
two seven oh five, three four forty three oh eight.
So that's a look at all of our soccer and
volleyball from a Thursday night.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Week three of the football season is upon us.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
You've got the granddaddy of them all, as they call it,
the rivalry with Mayfield and Tillman coming up tonight. That's
the main event, that's the headliner tonight. And as somebody
pointed out again on our text line, there's another win streak,
seventeen game win streak on the line tonight. You know,
a few years ago, Tillman had snapped Mayfield's seventeen game

(06:47):
winning streak over Tilman, so Mayfield had won seventeen consecutive games,
and then Tilman snapped that streak two seasons ago. Well,
going into tonight's game, Tilman has a seventeen game win
streak period, so they've won their last seventeen games period.
So that's on the line to I can Mayfield snap
a seven told that, talk about a thread, talk about

(07:08):
a headline, talk about a little nugget there of information
for that game, the number seventeen. Could it really be
that important? Could it really be that cool of a
headline for Mayfield to go to Tilman and snap a
seventeen game win streak the same way Tilman snapped their
seventeen game win streak over the Blue Tornado a few

(07:28):
years ago. That's why I love sports like the ick.
Those things we'll see, we'll talk about it, we'll break
it down. We'll get into the entire history of the
rivalry here in the second segment in a little bit.
But that's the big one, that's the main event. That's
the one everybody will be keeping an eye on, and
most general fans, you know, if you're not really a

(07:50):
true fan of your high school team, if you're just
kind of looking for a game to go to tonight,
that's the one people will go to. Mayfield Tillman. I
haven't been to that one obviously in the last you know,
now five years, because I do Graves County football, But
previously before that, early in the early days of Region
one sports, I made a point to attend that game.
I think I attended three or four consecutive games, whether

(08:15):
at Mayfield, whether at Tilman, and big crowd, big rivalry.
It was a lot of fun, a lot of fun.
So I know people will be there and be interested
in that one. That's the big one. But then you've
got some other really good games that are taking place tonight.
You've got Graves County and Murray.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
I get it.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Graves County oh and two, Murray two and oh. The
last time the Eagles started oh and two, they went
on to win eight games. Not all is lost, and
we'll talk about that. We'll talk about what happened two
years ago when they had a almost eerily similar start
both in score and result to this point of the season.

(08:54):
But that's a good football team going to Murray to
take on another really good football team. That'll be a
fun one tonight. Then you've got Marshall County Trigg County.
I think that's got a chance to be a good
football game, and I think a chance for Marshall County
to get back in the win column.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
We'll talk about that one later on.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
McCracken County plays host to Northeast that's Clarksville, Tennessee tonight.
That's one we'll be keeping an eye. That's one that
could be a good one. And then you've got Callaway
County Fulton County. You know, this is where you start
getting into the I get it. It's not super high
level football, and these are two teams that are coming
off of bad years. Where Callay County is snapping along

(09:30):
losing streak and the only win Fulton County got last
season was over Callaway County. But again, these two teams meet,
has a chance to be a close, interesting football game.
And then Valor Memorial they go to Massac County. So
those are your games tonight. You've got the granddaddy of

(09:51):
them all, Tillman Mayfield. That's your main event. You're undercard
right below that would be Graves Murray, and I think, honestly,
Graves and Murray, and then maybe marshall and Trigg and
then maybe McCracken and Clarksville and then Callawai Fulton County
a lot of I'm interested in that one, honestly. Just again,

(10:12):
something's got to give and ballad of Massat County.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
Those are your games tonight.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Those are the things we'll be talking about, and we
will when we come back taking a break, we'll come back.
We'll break them down, take a look at the stats
and make our predictions. That and more coming up on
Region one Sports.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Region one Sports, the best in the West.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
It's Reaching one Sports. It is your Friday edition of
the show as we get ready for football. Friday, Week
three of the football season brings us the granddaddy of
them all, as many refer to it, it's the rivalry
of Mayfield and Paduca Tillman in football, both unbeaten going

(10:55):
into this game in what is the second oldest rivalry
in the state of Kentucky, one hundred and fourteen years.
One hundred and fourteen years these two schools have been
playing football against one another. I can't even quantify that
in my head, like I can't even get my brain

(11:15):
to process one hundred and fourteen years of a rivalry.
In case you are wondering, Mayfield leads the all time
series fifty three wins. Paduka Tilman has forty six wins. Now,
of course that is disputed because over one hundred years
ago there were some discrepancies in final scores and even

(11:38):
who won a couple of those early meetings, particularly the
first meeting and then the second meeting. So apparently the
nineteen eleven game has been a little bit disputed. Some
sources say Mayfield, you know, Mayfield's records indicate the nineteen
eleven game ended in a tie. However, other records show
that it was a Mayfield victory twenty two to nine.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
Nothing.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
So you kind of see what we're getting at. Similarly,
the nineteen twelve game has a conflicting account. Paducah's side
listed as a twenty six nothing Tilman win, while Mayfield
says they won the game twenty two nothing. I mean,
they can't even get the score right, much less who won.
So a little bit conflicting. But official accounts and all

(12:24):
of those that you know went back and studied this,
I looked at a little closer. They say officially, that
record again is Mayfield leads the series fifty three to
forty six with ten ties.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
And as I said, it is the second oldest rivalry
in Kentucky, dating back to nineteen eleven. The oldest rivalry,
in case you were curious, is Louisville mel Versus Manual
that dates back to eighteen ninety three.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
That's insane.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
So it's one hundred and fourteen years for Tilman and Mayfield,
one hundred and thirty two years for Louisville mel Versus Manual.
So a little bit of recent history between these two schools.
In twenty and twenty three, Paduka Tilman broke mayfield seventeen
game win streak with a thirty five twenty eight victory,
so Mayfield had rattled off. Remember they have the all

(13:16):
time mark, you know in wins. They had rattled off
to get that all time mark, seventeen consecutive wins, seventeen
years of Mayfield winning in that series until twenty and
twenty three Tilman where they're now on a series streak
of their own. You know, they broke that streak in
twenty twenty three with a close victory last season, not

(13:37):
so much a thumping forty one to ten the final
in last year's game. Now breaking down the meeting of
these two teams so far this season, again, both teams unbeaten.
Mayfield ranked according to some outlets as the number one
team in Class two A, although other outlets have them
as low as three or four, which is crazy. They're

(13:58):
two to zero to start the season. They throw the
football at two hundred and four yards per game twenty
eight to forty five officially as a team, two touchdowns,
one interception. Now Gray Robbins their starter is twenty three
to thirty nine for two hundred and ninety yards passing,
no touchdowns, no interceptions, which is kind of crazy two

(14:20):
weeks into the season. Running the football as a team
thirty seven carries, two hundred and forty five yards eight
rushing touchdowns. That's one hundred and twenty two yards per game,
So two hundred and four yards passing per game, one
hundred and twenty two yards rushing per game. They have
been more heavy on the run as far as their
offense goes and scoring touchdowns. And that's including a forty

(14:44):
to seven win over Graves County and a fifty five
nothing win over a bad Christian County team. So that's Mayfield,
Paduka Tilman. You flip that they beat McCracken County sixty
three twenty eight. They beat Graves County forty nine to fourteen,
although one of those touchdowns came against Graves County's TV team.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
At the end, you look at Paduca Tilman.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
They are averaging three hundred and thirty six yards passing
per game, one hundred and eighty one yards rushing per game.
Son Crowe has thrown the football seventy times. He's forty
eight of seventy for ten touchdowns three picks. DeMarcus Wilson
has ran the football at eighty three yards per game
with two touchdowns. Mason Copeland averaging seventy seven yards a

(15:25):
game and two touchdowns, so kind of a dual threat
in the backfield. Of course, the big receiver on the edge,
sophomore Avery Thompson one hundred and twenty five yards receiving
per game so far, three receiving touchdowns total on the season.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
And here's the thing. On paper, Tillman's better. I've seen
both teams.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
That's the kind of the great thing about Graves County schedule,
as tough as it's been, I've seen both teams, and
Tillman athletically is just better than Mayfield. Now, I'm not
gonna go the Paul Finebaum route and tell you because
I think they're talented or more talented or more explosive,
that that means they're gonna run Mayfield off the field.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Like he said Texas would do to Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
The difference being this is a home game for Tillman
and they're the favorite, and they should be the favorite.
They're ranked like fifth overall despite class in the state
of Kentucky. Production wise, Tilman's been better. Tilman has been better,
and they've played a better schedule so far. Both have
played Graves, but McCracken being a better team than Christian County.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
It's at Tillman.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
If this game was at War Memorial, I would feel
a little better about Mayfield. I just it's at Tilman.
They've got a more high powered offense. They're athletic. We'll
see Mayfield's offense. I mean, for Mayfield win this game,
it's got to be in the trenches. It's gotta be.
You gotta control time of possession. You got to control
field possession.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
You can't.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
You gotta you know, penalties, you can't shoot yourself in
the foot and have silly penalties or game or drive
killing penalties. You know, may Field's got to play the cleaner, better,
more efficient game to get this win. They've got less
room for error. Still talented, but just less room for
error than Tillman. Tillman's more explosive.

Speaker 1 (17:11):
You know.

Speaker 2 (17:11):
Tillman's the kind of team they can commit a silly penalty,
push themselves back behind the six, and in one play
make it all back up.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
Not saying Mayfield can't.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
I'm just saying Tillman's just that team that's they sort
of find ways to overcome their own mistakes. And if
you're Mayfield, I think you want the football as much
as possible. You know, when I say time of possession,
I think Mayfield wants to run as many offensive plays
as possible, keep Tillman on the sidelines, keep their offense
on the sidelines, and keep moving the football, control the clock,

(17:41):
control the tempo, control the game. But Tillman, for me,
they're gonna win the third game in the series. They're
gonna win their third straight, which by the way, has
not happened again. Mayfield had a seventeen year streak. Tillman
last won three in a row in two thousand and three,
two thousand and four, two thousand and five, and Mayfield
ended that streak and then created a seventeen year run

(18:01):
of their own. So that's the series. That's where we are.
That's what you got. I'm taking Tilman tonight because it's
at Tilman. Between the two, they they are more explosive,
more athletic in some key spots. Obviously they got big
dudes up on the line. I think they come out
with the win.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
And this is one of those games where we think
I think it'll be I think it's gonna look more
like twenty twenty three. Like you know, Tilman only won
that game by one touchdown. I think they win by
a couple of scores in this game, but I think
it's gonna be more akin to that game, more akin
to that That game was more even than last year's game.

(18:42):
I don't think they're gonna run Mayfield off the field.
I don't think it's gonna be forty one to ten.
I don't think it's gonna be a blowout. So this
game will look more like twenty twenty three than twenty
twenty four. But Tilman's gonna win. I think if I'm
giving a spread, I'm gonna put it at like ten.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
That's that's Tilman Mayfield. All right, Moving on other good
games on the dock. At tonight, Graves County travels to
Murray High on paper, and if you look at just
production from the first two weeks, this is a game
that looks like it favors Murray heavily. But as the
Great League Corso would say, not so fast, my friends,
all time these schools have they they kind of met annually,

(19:18):
they kind of met yearly from twenty eleven until twenty nineteen,
and then they stopped playing each other and have not
played a game since twenty nineteen, So nine previous meetings,
all nine coming in consecutive years. Graves County has a
seven to two mark in the series. Murray won the
first two meetings nineteen to seventeen in twenty eleven, ten

(19:41):
to seven in twenty twelve. That one was an upset.
Graves was the better team that year and it was
just a kind of ugly game. Graves has since when
the previous seven meetings, most of them have been close.
In fact, pretty much all of them have been close.
Their last meeting again came in twenty nineteen. Graves County
went to Murray and got a thirty eight to thirty

(20:01):
five win over the Tigers that season. Now a lot
has been and ken be and you know, some have
made a big deal about Graves County being oh to
two and you know forty to seven lost to Mayfield,
forty nine to fourteen loss to Tilman. Well, Graves County
has started owing two several times and went on to
have really really great seasons. In fact, go back just

(20:25):
a couple of years to twenty twenty three, Graves County
started oh to two. They lost forty two to seven
to Mayfield and forty two to eighteen to Tilman, very
similar scores to this year's games. That was at Mayfield,
that was home against Tilman, just like this season. Two
years ago, they had a junior class that had twenty

(20:46):
two juniors and nine seniors. This year's Graves County team
has twenty one juniors and eleven seniors. And my point
is two years ago that was a team on the
rise that struggled and didn't look as good as they
wanted to in the first two weeks and went on
to again a team on the rise. They went on
to win eight games that season, so from zero to

(21:09):
two and not being super competitive score wise in those
first two weeks to finishing eight to four with a
very similar roster, a lot of juniors, good seniors, but
a lot of juniors that make up the bulk of
that team, especially those skill positions. So does this year's

(21:29):
team now. That team a couple of years ago had
a little bit lighter schedule that helped jump start them
and get them going after those first two weeks. This
year's team, there is no week off point in in
case going to Murray and taking on a top three
three to a football team, And really my overall point
is you could look at that team for Graves County

(21:49):
a couple of years ago. The first two weeks, the
offensive numbers did not look good, the outlook did not
look as good, and then once they went on to
win eight games, you look back and you go, oh,
they were fine. It's just really good competition early to
start the season. But once they got into playing teams
that were more of their speed, more of their caliber,
everything ended up being fine. And I think you're gonna

(22:10):
see something very similar with this Graves County team. I'm
not saying they're gonna go in to win eight games.
I hope they do. I think they can. I'm just
saying I think they've got a run in a season
like that in them. But it's got to start tonight
with going to Murray High. This is a good Murray
High football team. You look at what Murray Hig has
done so far this season. They've beaten Apollo, They've beat

(22:32):
Calloway County again, neither great. Apollo got a lot of
love in the preseason Top ten, but I think people
are starting to figure them out a little bit. Maybe
that was a little overrated to start the year, but
they're very good, very well coached. They've got a very
good quarterback and they go to Apollo and they get
a forty eight to thirty four win. Calloway County much

(22:54):
better than they were last year. Callway Kenny moved the
football in that game last week. They just made mistakes
and could not capitalize on a few drives. Not saying
that would have changed the game or changed gave them
the victory. I'm just saying they did move the football,
they did have some success, but in the end, Murray
thumps them fifty to ten, and that's that's what matters most.

(23:14):
So Murray two and oh Graves County oh and two
Murray so far this season throwing the football at two
hundred and thirty five yards per game, five touchdowns, no
picks so far for senior White Robbins. He also leads
the team in rushing with ninety seven yards rushing per game.
Has not scored a touchdown yet, but by the way,
that's on thirteen rush attempts. So he has scrambled out

(23:36):
thirteen times this season for one hundred and ninety three
total yards. Let's just get an average on that. That's
fifteen yards per time he rushes the football. As a team,
Murray is running the football at two hundred and fifty
one yards per game, eight rushing touchdowns, so two thirty
five of the year, two fifty one on the ground,

(23:58):
five passing touchdowns, eight rush touchdowns. And I'll just say it,
I think White Robbins is the most underappreciated quarterback in
our area. And when I say our area, I don't
just mean our region. I mean the area from here
to Bowling Green. I think very highly underappreciated. He's very good,
and he's he's very good at what he does leading
that team. On the flip side, again, Graves County consider

(24:21):
their level of competition, but they have not hit their
stride yet on offense, just seventy seven yards per game passing,
no touchdowns, one interception. That's just one hundred and fifty
four total yards so far through two weeks, one hundred
and seven yards per game on the ground, three rushing touchdowns. Again,

(24:41):
they've just not hit their stride yet. But they've got talent.
Jase Houston is a very talented quarterback. If you watched
that Tillman game last week, you saw I think the
coaches and the players kind of figure themselves out, kind
of figure out what is going to work what might
not work, kind of figure out how to best utilize
the person they have because they have talent. Jase Houston

(25:02):
is a talented kid. The running back room is very talented.
It's deep, Rozelle Coal, I mean, those guys can can
move the football. They just have not had great opportunity
or the competition level to prove that yet. On the edge,
you've got Reagan Mathis, You've got the Cascivic, You've got
Tai cavit Ti cat by the way, just ten and

(25:23):
a half yards per game so far. That will go up,
I promise you as the season goes on. He's too talented.
So there's talent there. There just hasn't been production there yet. Again,
consider the competition. So this game is at Murray. It's
a tough place to go on the road if you're
not used to it. The crowd is right on top
of you everywhere because there's no track. It's a baseball field,

(25:43):
so the crowd is right on top of you.

Speaker 1 (25:45):
The street is.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
Right on top of you. The building at one end
feels it like it's right on top of you. It's
a very different place to go play. It has a
different feel to it. Than what you might be used
to if you're Graves County. So all the advantages here
are for Murray. Here's the thing. I like Murray's offense.
I think Graves County's gonna move the football on their defense,

(26:06):
and just like I said with Mayfield, although I think
this will be a closer game with Graves having much
more of an opportunity to win. If Graves can eliminate
mistakes and get more offensive plays, they're gonna win the
football game. And that's the key. Graves has got to
have more offensive plays. I think those plays at times
will be explosive, but I think they need to run

(26:28):
more offensive plays than Murray does, and if they do, they.

Speaker 1 (26:30):
Win the football game. But this is one of those games.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
This is kind of a pivotal matchup where Murray could
easily walk out three and oh and Graves O and three.
But even though all signs points to Murray getting a victory,
you know me, I'm the Graves guy. Of course I'm
picking Graves County to win this game. And I do
really truly believe they're gonna go in and get.

Speaker 1 (26:47):
A road victory this week. Would I be surprised, shocked
and upset?

Speaker 2 (26:51):
If Murray one, no, because they're the favorite and everything
favors them in this game. But this is one of
those things where for Graves County it's like facing a
really good basketball pitcher. When you've seen one hundred miles
an hour two weeks in a row, ninety five feels
a little more hittable. And I don't think Murray comes
at you at one hundred miles an hour like Tillmin

(27:11):
and Mayfield. Does they come at you more ninety five, which,
by the way, is still really really good. Murray is
still a team that should go on and have a
fantastic year and is a team that is favored to
make a deep run. If not, maybe you win a
three A state title. But Graves the rest of the season,
with the exception of maybe Owensborough, will not see a
depth of athleticism or the speed and athleticism they saw

(27:35):
the first two weeks, So things kind of come back
down more to their level of competition that they will
face the rest of the season. So this week is
a big week not just for Graves to try to
pick up a win, but try to show they are
going to have the kind of season we think they
are capable of having so again I'm picking Graves. Of course,
I am would not be surprised if Murray doesn't win

(27:55):
this game. And if Murray wins this game, by the way,
then then they're clearly the favorite against Marshall County the
next week. Again that's a home game. They're the favorite
against Russellville. They're probably the favorite against McCracken a County
even though it's on the road, and then they you
gotta think they probably went out. I mean that this
could be a make or break week to if you're

(28:15):
gonna have an unbeaten season, because this is maybe the
one game left on the schedule. Maybe I might throw
McCracken County in there again because it's a road game.
They're at Union County, but Union County is not as
good this season. So this may be that make or
break week. The difference in a nine to one mark
or a ten and o mark, because I don't I
don't think they lose two games this year.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (28:37):
I think it's it's nine in one or ten and
oer just just looking at their schedule and looking at
what they've got, all right, So that's Tillman and and Mayfield,
that's Murray and grapes. Let's take a break, we'll come back.
We've got plenty more to break down. When we return,
we'll talk McCracken, We'll talk Marshall. We'll talk more when
we get back. This as Reagion one Sports.

Speaker 1 (28:55):
You were listening to the Region one Sports Report on
ninety nine to five the Fan.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
I've got my Reason one Sports rolling along here on
your Friday edition of the show, previewing, breaking down in
predicting our Friday night games for Week three of the
football season. So far, we've talked to the granddaddy of them all.
We talked Tillman to Mayfield. I'm taking Tilman to win
tonight at home. I've got Graves County winning on the

(29:26):
road at Murray because yeah. So now we talk some
other games for your Friday night. Let's move on to
Marshall County. The Marshall's one and one on the season
will travel to Trig County, who is also won in one,
but a bit more of a surprising one in one.
Trigg County football has went through a little bit of
a down period. They were a three win team last

(29:46):
season and then the previous season just a two win team.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
This season. They've started out with a blowout win over.

Speaker 2 (29:52):
A batt Ohio County team, and they've been bad for
a little while, and then a surprising one point loss
to Hart County, and I see surprising not that they lost,
but Hart County is a good football team. Hart County
lost nineteen fifteen to Logan County, which by the way,
was on the road.

Speaker 1 (30:09):
So they went on the.

Speaker 2 (30:10):
Road to Logan County and lost nineteen fifteen, holding Logan
County to nineteen points. McCracken County lost that game and
gave up thirty three points to Logan County. So maybe
Hart County's pretty decent at football. Their schedule is not
so decent. They played their first six games of the
season on the road. They don't have a home game
until October third. I don't know if there's something that

(30:32):
maybe either is something going on at their field or
their stadium and they couldn't play at home until a
certain point. They do play four in a row at home,
so only four home games, six away, all on the
road until October.

Speaker 1 (30:44):
That's tough.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
But they've been pretty decent, and Trick County came up
one point short, so again, Trick County two years ago,
two wins. Last year three wins. This season they're one
and one. Marshall County. We all know the story by now.
They feel like a forever three win pro But this
season we feel like they're better. In fact, I know
they're better. They're better.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
So far this.

Speaker 2 (31:07):
Season, the Marshals are throwing the football at one hundred
and fifty three yards per game. They're running it at
one hundred and sixty two yards per game. That's pretty good.
They've got some dudes up front. They can move the
line of scrimmage and move the football on the ground.
Neiland Jazik the long time starting senior quarterback, not a
long time senior, just a long time starter. Four touchdowns,
two interceptions, again one hundred and fifty three yards per game.

(31:30):
They are led and rushing essentially by sophomore Jake Thomason,
who only has one game under his belt so far,
but he had fifteen carries for ninety two yards in
a touchdown case. And Holland has played two games. He's
got one hundred and twelve total rushing yards, which officially
leads the team, but that's fifty six yards per game.
Second on the team in yards per game with two touchdowns,
which again leads the team. So again, they do move

(31:52):
the football well on the ground. I think they're good
enough in the air to get some things done, and
they've looked a lot better so far this season, going
one in one Trick County. On the flip side, they
throw the football at one hundred and sixty four yards
per game, one touchdown, one interception. Their quarterback is twenty
of twenty six on the season. They're not a pass
heavy team, but he's been a sophomore Cayden Scott has

(32:16):
been very efficient, very good. They do run the football
very well, and they're led by Goode who is twenty
six carries three hundred and two yards seven touchdowns one
fifty one a game. As a team, they're two hundred
and thirty nine yards per game of eleven rushing touchdowns.
So these are two teams that really need to rely
on the run game to have success, and Trick County

(32:38):
has been better at that.

Speaker 1 (32:39):
Now.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
Again, one of those wins, and in one of those
games where a lot of those stats kind of got
piled up, was against a bad Ohio County team. Marshall
County has played two better teams or at least had
two better weeks of football than Trick County. True County
has had one good week of football. However, this game

(33:00):
is on the road, it is at Trigg County, and
you would consider them a favorite slightly for the home
field advantage. But I've said it before and I'll say
it again. I really thought the Marshalls, if they were
gonna get to four, I thought they had a path
to five wins. I really did. I thought they were
not just gonna get over that three win hump. I
thought they were gonna get to five and really push

(33:22):
having a five hundred record or better this season.

Speaker 1 (33:25):
I didn't think they would be better. I didn't think
they'd have a winning record.

Speaker 2 (33:28):
I thought they had a path, had a schedule that
might get them to five wins.

Speaker 1 (33:33):
But they had to win last week. They came up short.

Speaker 2 (33:35):
Great comeback effort in the second half, but they did
come up short. Traditionally, and even more recently, Caldwall County
has been the better team than Trig County. Caldwall County
beat Trig County at the end of the season last
year fifty four to twenty two. The year before that,
they beat them forty one to seven. And Cardwall County
was not very good each of those two years. To

(33:56):
be honest, they're much improved this season, but they weren't
much better record wise and stat wise than Trick County,
and yet they ran them off the field. So my
logical part of my brain tells me that Trick County
is not as good as Caldwell County, so Marshall County
should be in a better spot this week. I think
the Marshalls go on the road, I think they get

(34:16):
the win. I think they get the win. Defense has
got to play good. Don't don't commit any turn you know,
be careful with the turnovers. Turnovers hurt them last week.
But if you go on the road and you clean
that up this week, you're gonna get a win. I
think Cardwell County is better than Trie County. I think
if you play with fewer mistakes, fewer costly mistakes this week,
you're gonna get a win. I've got the spread somewhere

(34:38):
around eight and a half. But the Marshalls go on
the road, they get to win this week.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
All right. Moving on McCracken County in action.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
This week, they've got Northeast Clarks Full Tennessee the Mustangs
and two so far this season, searching for their first win.
They got some love in the preseason rankings in six
A football and starting off the season, oh win two
now again. They played Puduka Tilman in Week one, but
we thought they'd go on the road and get a
win last week at Logan County.

Speaker 1 (35:04):
And I told you that it's tough.

Speaker 2 (35:06):
It's tough when you drive two and a half hours
to go play a football game against an opponent you
don't know as a player, you don't have any familiarity with.
That's a tough thing to do. And it was clearly
tough for them last week. Logan County won that game
thirty three to sixteen. If that game is at McCracken County,
I don't know if McCracken wins, but I think it's
a closer, better football game, certainly more favorable to McCracken

(35:29):
County if it had been a home game. Nonetheless, they're
row and two. They go to Northeast. I'm sorry they're
at home against Northeast. That's Clarksville, Tennessee.

Speaker 1 (35:37):
Now.

Speaker 2 (35:37):
According to Max preps Or as a good buddy of
mine at Graves County, always always caught it MAXI Preps.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
It's what he really thought it was called.

Speaker 2 (35:46):
According to max Preps, they are two and oer to
start the season. They beat Christian County in Week one
forty eight to twenty, and they beat West Creek thirty
eight nothing, So take from that what you will if
we don't have stats from those games. But against Christian County,
what we do have is the score for each quarter.
It was a seven to seven ball game after the

(36:07):
first quarter. Northeast led fourteen to seven at halftime. They
came out in the third quarter and scored twenty one
points in the third quarter, added thirteen more in the
fourth quarter, so close game early. Then Northeast kind of
woke up and really put it put Christian County away
there in the second half. And again, if you're just
going by Christian County, then you know Christian County is

(36:28):
just not very good this season. They're oh and two
getting thumped by Northeast and by Mayfield. Looking at McCracken
County again oh and two, But you look at what
they've done so far. Matnix O'Neill throwing the football at
one hundred and sixty five yards per game four touchdowns,
three interceptions.

Speaker 1 (36:45):
They run the.

Speaker 2 (36:46):
Football just fifty three yards per game. They really struggled
to move the football on the ground, didn't really have
a ton of attempts, but also didn't have much success
against Logan County. I don't think they want to run
the football. I think they want to throw the football
with Mattix O'Neil. Here's the thing, though, I think you're
gonna need to run the football at some point, at
least to some honest success. We'll see if they get

(37:08):
that going tonight. They do have a couple of seniors
in the backfield they can hand it off to. So
just fifty three yards and two touchdowns or fifty three
yards per game and two touchdowns total so far on
the ground and again one hundred and sixty four yards
passing four touchdowns, three interceptions. The offense, you know, has
struggled the first two weeks, but again they played Puduca
Tilman and a good Logan County defense.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
That's a good defense.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
I do think McCracken will get the win tonight again,
just because I don't know as much about Northeast as
I would like, although it probably wouldn't surprise me in
Northeast wins. They are two to zero on the season
so far and haven't had a close game yet, so
who knows. But I'm gonna take the Mustangs. They let
me down last week, but I think they're gonna they're
gonna pay me back this week because if they don't,

(37:52):
then you've got Mayfield the week after that. I mean,
this could be a really tough season for McCracken County,
who I really thought, you know, a six win team
last season. I thought they would at least get back
to that mark this season. It's still in front of them,
but they got to get that win tonight, so there's that.
So I'm taking Marshall in their game. I'm taking McCracken
County in their game. Who else we got? We've got

(38:14):
Calloway County tonight. They are on the road at Fulton
County now. For what it's worth, and I've always, you know,
praised Fulton County. I think they get the most out
of the least as far as coaches and teams in
this region, and they've had some good teams over the years.
But in this series, which on KHSAA goes back to
nineteen ninety eight, I'm sure it might go back further

(38:35):
than that, but it's showing fourteen meetings since nineteen ninety
eight and Fulton County has won two of those and
just two. But last year to me was the eye
opening one where they beat Calloway County sixty two to fourteen.
And by the way it was, wasn't it the only
win of their season? I got to go back and look, yeah,
it was the only win of the season. Fulton County

(38:57):
did put up thirty four points in a game against
Ballerty Memorial and a loss, but that was by far
their best offensive output, and that was at Callaway County
had to be just a miserable not for Laker Nation.
Had to be because you got a team coming in
zero to two. You're not a great football team, but
you're at home and you've got a one A football

(39:19):
team coming in.

Speaker 1 (39:19):
You're four A.

Speaker 2 (39:21):
That's something, and you think, man, we're gonna at least
get a win tonight. Not only do you not gonna win,
you get absolutely thumped in your home place. So if
you're Calloway County, if that can't motivate you to go
out and get a win tonight, I don't know what will.
Because this is again a winnable football game for you.
This is a solid Fulton County team, and this is

(39:42):
no disrespect to Fulton County, but they're one A football,
You're four A. You've got to go on the road
and get a win. It's not getting these wins that
have really put you not only underwater, but absolutely drowning
as a program the last few years. You sunk like
that Titanic in that game last season. Can't do that.

(40:05):
You want to stay afloat. You want to get back
to floating, you want to get back to being buoyant. Well,
this is this is the night Callowei County's got to
go with get the win. Let's look at the matchup
Fulton County. So far this season zero and two. They
are averaging two hundred and fourteen yards passing per game,
five touchdowns, one pick on the ground, one hundred and
twenty seven per game with one rushing touchdown so far.

(40:29):
So again, they do a better job passing the football
than running the football. And they do have success with
Preston Smith, the junior at quarterback and getting that football
in the air because they've got a really good receiver
by the name of Zaden Kinney, who, by the way,
is averaging one hundred and thirty yards per game and
has five touchdowns already on the season. He's pretty good.
So Callowei County here, here's the deal. You gotta defend

(40:51):
one receiver like you got. I'm not saying they won't
have success somewhere else. I don't think they'll have enough
success somewhere else. He's the dude, he's the guy you
got to take out of the football game. You got
to take him away as an option. And if you
take him away, I think it's that simple. I think
you win the football game for Calloway County one and
one to start the season already one win better than

(41:13):
last year. Throwing the football as a team at two
hundred and twenty four yards per game, Matthew Bridwell is
two hundred and seven per game. He's got three touchdowns,
one interception. He's twenty two of thirty three on the season.
They are running the football and a surprising one hundred
and ninety eight yards per game, most of that coming
in Week one, with five rushing touchdowns. Logan Smith, the

(41:34):
senior one hundred and nine per game. Calloway's the better
team on paper, Calloway's for a football. It is on
the road at Fulton County. But if last season's game
does not motivate you to go give them payback, it's
gonna be a long season after this week. Calloway is
going to go get the win. Calloway is in a spot.

Speaker 1 (41:55):
They are. They could be three and one to start
the year. They could be.

Speaker 2 (41:58):
It's in front of them, but it's absolutely not happening.
If they lose tonight, clearly, And if they lose tonight,
I think that's going to be it's gonna paint a
long season ahead of them. Gotta go get the wind tonight.
I'm gonna take Callaway on the road. But man, last
year's game, it makes me nervous, makes me nervous for them.
So that's Callaway and Fulton, last but not least, Ballad
Memorial is in action tonight. They have Massac County on

(42:21):
the road, traveling across the river. Have fun with the
traffic as they go across the river and go to
Massac County.

Speaker 1 (42:28):
In the Land of Lincoln.

Speaker 2 (42:30):
The Bombers are zero and two to start the season,
struggling offensively just eighty six yards per game in the air,
eighty eight yards per game on the ground, two touchdowns
through the air, two on the ground. They don't have
Blair Saints, and that was the big difference last season.
You know, last season, this Ballad Memorial team was improved

(42:50):
and they were one player who led the charge and
got a lot done for them, and they were a
four and seven football team. They don't have him this year,
and they look a little more like the previous season.
Not last year, but the twenty twenty what two season.

Speaker 1 (43:04):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (43:04):
So the Bombers oh and two to start the year,
struggling to move the football, they take on or travel
to an O and one Massak County team. Massac County
lost fifty to twenty eight to frankfort It on the
road Massack. I don't I think they're gonna win the
football game. That's that's about the I think is about
the best I can give you in this one. Last season,

(43:28):
this was a forty four to twenty eight win four
Ballard Memorial.

Speaker 1 (43:33):
They gave up twenty eight points, they scored forty four.

Speaker 2 (43:35):
But they had a kid by the name of Blair Says,
who you know, kind of led the charge and got
it done. And we'll have him this year it changes
a lot. I think they go on the road. I
think Massa County gets a win and there you have it.
There it is, there, it was. There's all of our picks.
I'm taking Tilman over Mayfield. I'm taking Graves over Murray.
I think they go on the road and get it done. Tonight,

(43:58):
i will take McCracken over Clarksville, Tennessee. I'll take Marshall
County at Trie County, give me Callaway at Fulton, and
I'll take Massac County over Ballard. And that's our Week
three football predictions. That's our Friday show.

Speaker 1 (44:13):
That is it for me.

Speaker 2 (44:14):
Oh, if you enjoy the weekend, enjoy the games, enjoy
the weather, have fun, be safe. We'll talk about it
on Monday. Until then, I'm Brian Yorke and this has
