Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five the fare.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Region one Sports. This is your Monday, November. I don't
even know what day it is, November tenth edition of
the Region one Sports Report. I'm Brian York. I'm cold boy.
It's cold outside. That's I mean, understatement of the year
so far. It is a ball me. Twenty seven degrees
right now as we record. It's also snowing. And you
know my rule if you're a longtime listener of the show,
(00:35):
if it's gonna be cold, it might as well snow.
That's what I've always said, you might as well. You
might as well get the full winter effect. And it
is snowing, and it's twenty seven and it's cold, it's winter,
and it's here for like two days. That's the most
amazing thing. It's gonna be like nearly seventy this weekend.
But you know, throwing your long Johns, grab your to
Boggins gloves, whatever you need to stay warm and enjoy
(00:58):
a nice cold Monday in a start to your work week.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
We've got a lot to do on the show today.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
By the way, as always, you can get in touch
with us at two seven oh five three four forty
three eight. That's two seven oh five to three four
forty three oh eight. Got to wrap up our week
one of the football playoff coverage. We had some teams
move on, some teams fall out, and we'll talk about
that today. We'll get into more of our basketball discussions today.
(01:23):
To be honest, I don't even know what we're gonna
talk about with basketball. I'm just still ready to talk
talk hoops, So we'll talk.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
We'll talk hoops today.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
We're gonna do our official you know, Power five preseason
Top five. We'll do our official players to watch our
official top ten players. We'll do all of that either
later this week or sort of end of the week
into next week officially, but we'll talk hoops today. We'll
get into some discussions today. Maybe continue to think out
loud over those top teams. Maybe continue to think out
(01:52):
loud over who's who's the hunter and who's being hunted.
As we start basketball season. I'm excited for it. We're
a little bit less than a away from it. I'm
gonna be talking with coach Doss today for an interview
will air for you later this week. So I've already
got one basketball coach interview lined up. We're gonna be
talking to mister Clinton out of Calloway County. He's got
(02:13):
a new book, so we're gonna try to talk to him.
He's got a book about reading one basketball, kind of
a historical god.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
If you will, it's.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
On Amazon right now. I'm gonna I'm gonna give you
all the details on that a little bit later on.
But we're getting into basketball and I'm getting excited for
it now. If you listen on Friday, you know that
I said on Friday, I had an announcement. Today, I
have an announcement that will affect this show. It will
affect my future and the future of what we do here.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Just reality.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Reality is sometimes things don't always work out the way
you want them to. Reality is sometimes the best laid
plans you end up traveling that road and realizing you
probably need to take a little bit of another route.
And a few weeks ago, real right after fall break,
I had started to have discussions and realized that my
future or the future of me staying in radio was
(03:07):
a little bit dimmer, a little bit bleaker than I
wanted it to be. And I had two thoughts I'm gonna,
you know, one was I'm gonna start looking for a
new career pivot or a new outlet or a new
career route in my forties, which is always fun. But
I want to be able to find something that will
allow me to stay connected to radio, keep doing Graves
(03:28):
County Sports, keep doing this show if possible, hang onto
that word or those those words, if possible. And right
after fall break, I'd put in an application or put
in my resume at a couple of places and ended
up getting a couple of like two interviews like back
to back days, which was crazy, and then I ended
up accepting a job. So this is my last week
(03:52):
as a full time radio employee. It's my last week
seventeen years, eighteen years total, but seven seventeen years as
a full time radio employee. And this is the final
week for me. I'll be starting Monday. Starting a week
from today, I'll be taking over as a marketing director
at Kentucky Oaks Mall. I'm excited about that. I'm excited
(04:15):
about that for a lot of reasons. It's a big adjustment, though,
you know, I my hours now in radio, I've kind
of you know, I always joke I don't earn as
much as I'd like to, but I get paid properly
for the time that I work. So you know this,
this job may not always afford me the salary I wanted,
but it afforded me the time that I needed or
(04:35):
wanted to be able to kind of do the other
things in life.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
And so starting Monday, I get paid for my time. Again.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
I have to give up a lot of my time.
You know, it's an eight thirty to five o'clock job.
You know, it's a traditional, you know, bankers hours kind
of job. Whereas here, you know, I got here this morning.
I've got to actually leave early because I've got to
to take my truck to the shop to get the
wiel lineman done. But normally i'd get here about you know,
five thirty in the morning. I'd be here until about
(05:05):
ten or ten thirty. I'd go home, get a few
hours in the middle of the day, kind of a break,
and then i'd start working from home a little bit
in the afternoon to get the rest of my hours,
and then you know, i'd go to whatever Graves County
broadcast I have. That's gonna change starting in a week.
But yes, again, in one week, I end my seventeen
year full time career in radio. Come see me at
(05:27):
the mall. By the way, It'll be fun. You'll see
me around, You'll see me making the rounds through the mall.
So come see me. I'm the marketing director. My job
is to talk to people make sure they're enjoying their
time at the mall.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
So come see me.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
But but that starts on Monday. How does that affect
everything else? I don't know, and let me explain. It
is my intention, it is my goal. It is my
hope that this show will continue. In fact, it will
continue how and in what form? Or will it continue
(06:00):
in all of its forms? So essentially, one way or
the other, there's gonna be a podcast one way or
the other. There's gonna be at least hear me out
at least two episodes a week. I'm trying to keep
it to three episodes a week. That's what we've done
for nearly five years. Now, that's the rhythm I like
to stay in. But it's gonna be different because now
(06:21):
I'm gonna be recording at home. Now I'm gonna be
recording and editing at home. So now instead of coming
here during my work hours. I'm gonna have to take
time in my home hours to record it and get
this show out, which means if it's gonna come out
on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, then I'm probably gonna have
to record on Sunday nights, Tuesday nights, and Thursday nights.
(06:46):
So I got to figure a few things out. So
it is my hope, it is my goal. It is
my intention that this show continues, if nothing else, at
least in the podcast form that you podcast listeners have
come to know and the rhythm you come to know
it in. I don't know about the radio. That's something
that we're gonna have to discuss this week.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Again.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
My intention is if I record on a Sunday night,
Tuesday night, Thursday night, that it can be sent in
and be loaded and be an air on Monday, Wednesday,
Fridays as always.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
But here's the thing. If for some reason it can't.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Continue on radio, for whatever reason, they decide that it's
too much work, they decide that it's not going to
work for them, whatever it may be, the show will
continue in a podcast form. Now, if it's not airing
on radio, we may adjust our days or may adjust
when it comes out on podcasts. I gotta do what's
best for me, right. But here's what you take away
(07:45):
from this as our listener. This show has been around
for nearly nine years. This thing has been a decade
of my life. It is my passion, It is my
labor of love. It is something that we built from
absolute nothing. We didn't promote it, just put it out there.
We've still never really promoted it, and it has grown
exponentially in the last nine years. It's become a thing
(08:07):
that I don't want to see go away for a
lot of reasons, but mostly for the athletes, for those
that this show shines a light on, for those that
the purpose of the show for covering those student athletes,
because the reality is we live in a world where
that coverage has shrunk exponentially, right traditional media, That coverage
(08:28):
has has gone away from what it used to be.
There's a lot of reasons for it. It's not the
people who try to cover the sports. That's their fault.
It's not their fault at all. But that's just the
reality we live in. I mean, you used to daily
coverage in the newspaper, used to have multiple newspapers, local
newspapers that have gone away. There's some radio stations that
(08:50):
used to call on broadcast games that have gone away,
and so this show has grown in that time and
hopefully filled some I know it won't fill all, but
filled some of that void. So that's my intention for
the athletes, for the students, to keep this going in
some form, if nothing else, It'll keep going in the
podcast form radio side. I'm hoping we get answers this week,
(09:12):
and I hope that that means that we continue forward
just like we always do. So that's number one. My
life is changing. It's going to create more work for me.
But I'm determined to keep this going because that's been
my passion and my labor of love. And again I'll
point out I do not get paid for this, and
when I continue it on my own, if that's the
route we go, I will not still be getting paid
(09:34):
for this.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
It's still just something I'm doing.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
So hopefully, hopefully it goes well and everything stays the same. Now,
as for Graves County Sports, I will continue to broadcast
Graves County Sports. Again, going to be a change. I
won't get off work until five o'clock. I won't be
able to get to the gym at four thirty or
four fifteen the way I used to. It's going to
be five fifteen, five thirty. The pregame shows are gonna
(09:59):
have to be shortened. It's gonna be more of a
rush to get in and get set up and get
to get things going for the broadcast.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
But but I know.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
How difficult it is to a find a replacement, and
b I don't want to be replaced. I love doing that.
That was important to me when I started looking for
another job opportunity. So I get a new job starting
a week from today. Things are gonna change. As far
as when I record this show, maybe even the quality
of the recording a little bit. We're still working that out.
(10:28):
Will it continue on the radio, That's something we're working
out this week. But I promise it will continue in
some form of podcast, somehow, some way it'll continue, And
surely you won't miss a beat in the podcast world.
And then as far as Grave Sports thumbs up, I'm good.
I'm still your guy. Maybe that disappoints you, Maybe that
makes you excited, Maybe it disappoints you. Either way, that's
(10:50):
the news I'm breaking today, all right. Didn't mean for
that to go the entire segment it did. Here we are,
let's take a break. We'll come back football week one.
We'll talk about the playoffs when we return. This is
Region one.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Sports, Kentucky's first region for a reason. Region one Sports.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
Yours call this ice.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
You will leave the sacrifice.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Love reach you one Sports.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Rolling along here on your Chili Chili Monday edition of
the show as we've got to football to talk and then,
like I said, we'll get into some basketball discussions a
little bit later on here in the episode. But let's
talk football playoffs Week one are in the book, and
we talked about Week one tips typically is a lot
of blowouts and we thought maybe that wouldn't be quite
(11:42):
the case last week with a few games and ended
up being all pretty much lopsided. Let's go through the
scores and then we'll go through the games and uh,
let's see, we'll start kind of in order. And one
A Bethlehem goes to Fulton County and defeats Fulton County
sixty six point thirty. We'll talk more about that one
in a moment. In two A Mayfield was off. They
(12:03):
get the winner though of Hancock County Caldwell County. Hancock
County won that game forty one nothing. In three A,
Murray beat eight Air County forty five eight. That's forty
five to eight. In four A, Callaway County falls to
Etown forty two to seven. In five A, my Graves
County Eagles had a rough one, losing to Bowling Green
forty two nothing. In six I'm sorry four A also
(12:27):
skip this one Paduka Tilman over Taylor County twenty eight nothing,
and then in six A McCracken County over Central Harden
forty six seven. So those are your scores from Friday nights.
So teams moving on in our area are Tilman, McCracken, obviously, Mayfield, Murray,
and I think that's it right, that's it. Wow, man,
(12:49):
that really weeded them out af through a week one.
So let's start with I want to start with one
A and I want to go in that order, but
I want to start there because there was news with
Fulton County and I'll get to all of that here
as Fullton County season comes to an end. It was
their first time to host a playoff game in my lifetime. Honestly,
I don't remember if somebody can yell at me or
(13:09):
text it to me. I saw the number exactly how
long it's been since they've hosted a playoff game. It's
been a few decades. But not only do they get
to host a playoff game for the first time in
all of those kids lifetimes, but it ends up being
the final game for longtime coach coach Bridges, James Bridges
announcing after the game that he was going to be
(13:31):
retiring and stepping away from the game of football or
retiring as a coach. So I want to do I
do want to read a statement because I think when
you've put in the work that he's put in, and
you've put it in where he's put it in at
and you've done and I've said this, I've said this
for nine years, nobody gets more out out of the least.
And I don't mean that they don't have talent. I
don't mean that they don't have good kids. I don't
(13:52):
mean that they don't occasionally have good football teams. You
know that's a representation of they've got good talent. It's
just small numbers. I mean to do it at such
a small school with so fewer resources, and your window
and your opportunity to win does not come open as
often as any other as those other schools, as the
(14:13):
bigger schools, and to be what they've been and to
be competitive, and I get it. You know a two
win team this year. Yeah, well they got in the
district and won two out of their three district games.
Like I said, they do the most with the least.
And I mean in all those facets, resources, roster size,
school size, location, I mean, it's like going to the
(14:34):
to the other end of the world when you've got
to go to Fulton County High School from just about anywhere.
I mean, even in this region. It's not an easy
trip or a fun trip. For a lot of those teams.
You have to travel to get there. So I don't
read his full statement, he said, after twenty one years
of coaching football both the middle school and high school
levels in Fulton County, I'm riding to announce my decision
to step away from the program. This has been one
(14:56):
of the hardest decisions of my life. After many conversations
with my family and close friends, I know it's time
to take a step back from something I love so much.
Coaching has been more than a job. It's been a calling,
a passion, a privilege. Twenty one years ago, I returned
my alma mater with one go to one day break
the curse of not being a of not hosting a
home playoff game, and November seventh, twenty twenty five, with
an incredible group of players and coaches, the dream became reality.
(15:18):
I couldnt be prouder of what we accomplished together. That's
the first part of his statement. He goes on to
say thank you to my players past and present. You
have been the heart and soul of this program. Watching
you grow, watching you grow as athletes and as young men,
have been the greatest report of my career. Your commitment, toughness,
toughness and belief in each other made for a very
long day worth it. To my coaching staff, thank you
(15:40):
for standing beside me through every challenge and every triumph.
Your dedication, your friendship meant more than the words can express.
To the families, thank you for trusting me with your
sons and for sporting this program a year after year.
Your sacrifices and encouragement had been the foundation of our success.
To the fans of the Fulton County community, you've been
our strength, Your pride and passion for the pilots if
carry us through the and lows. I will never forget
(16:01):
the energy you brought to every game and to my
own family and close friends. Thank you for your patience,
love and understanding. You supported me through countless late nights,
long seasons, and tough decisions. Though I will no longer
be coaching, I will continue to support Fulton County Football
in every way I can. It has truly been a
great ride. With gratitude and respect. Head coach James Bridges. Now,
(16:22):
I read all of that because it's worth reading, and
I think that speaks to the coach, the man that
he is. And by the way I know he said
was not an easy decision at some point. You have
to make that decision at some point. It was not
an easy decision for me to leave radio. I'm not
comparing the two, but I can feel for that he's
been doing it for twenty one years. I feel for
that you've been doing something for a decade and a
(16:43):
half and to make the decision that now's the time
to shift gears, now's the time to step away, Now's
the time to do something different. And it doesn't mean
it's easy. You may recognize that this is the time,
but that doesn't make it easy.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
It doesn't make it something you necessarily.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Are all in on, even if you think you are,
even if you're like, I'm one hundred percent behind this
and and right now, that's what I know he's saying.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
Here.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
In about eight months that you know that grass is green,
and you know, you start to hear the whistles on
the field and you start to get the sense of
I'm supposed to go and get into our start our season,
and get into our summer workouts and get it. That's
when you'll realize I was all in, but I still
I still want to be a little bit back in,
(17:31):
right That's when that's when you realize I'm gonna miss it.
But you start to feel that you miss it when
that that next season rolls around. So nothing but respect
from Region one to coach Bridges and what he's done
at Fulton County and what they did at Fulton County,
and nothing but respect for finally hosting that that playoff game.
(17:52):
That's that's great and what a great year. What a
great way to go out, what a great way to
go out. I know he'll be missed. Now what is
he leave behind. He leaves behind a pretty good team.
He leaves behind a team that I believe is only
graduating three seniors. Now again small roster. Losing three seniors hurts.
But they get back their quarterback. There do they get back? No,
(18:13):
Kenny is gone the receiver, but you get back your quarterback.
You're running backs, both your top guys that had both
over four hundred and forty yards rushing. You get back
a couple of sophomore receivers that were averaging thirty six
yards a game. Again behind Kenny, who's the top target.
This is a team that will be ready to step
on the field and compete. And this is a team
(18:35):
that may be ready to step on the field and
repeat hosting a playoff game. You know, I said that
window doesn't open up as often, but it's open, and
it will be open again next season for them to
come back and do some things in one A football.
But their season does end a sixty six thirty loss
to Bethlehem on Friday night, and so does the tenure
(18:55):
and the career at Fulton County of coach Bridges. All right,
moving on, what else we got? Let's say again, I
wanted to go in order, so we'll go to two.
A football you know Mayfield had to buy. They get
Hancock County this week. Hancock County beating Cordwell County forty
one nothing. That game ended up again, thought that Cadwell
had a shot to hang in that game, thought that
(19:17):
they might make it interesting, and instead Hancock County said no,
we got this, and they absolutely did forty one nothing.
This is gonna be a fun battle on Friday Night
between the Hornets and the Cardinals. Hancock County will come
in an eight and three record. They are not bad.
They don't throw the football a lot, but man do
they run it. Two seventy two a game, thirty four
(19:40):
rushing touchdowns. They got two running backs. It's kind of
a two headed monster. A junior and a sophomore. U Banks,
the junior average, not averages, has a hundred I'm sorry,
let me repeat that, has eight hundred and forty five
rushing yards on the season, Helms the sophomore seven hundred
and seventy nine, and then you've got a five hundred
(20:00):
thirty and a four to nineteen. Those would be leading
other teams. So they get it done on the ground,
so it'll be interesting to see what they do with
Mayfield on Friday night. We'll talk more about that as
the week goes on. But in two A football, Mayfield
had the buye. They get Hancock County on Friday. In
three A football, Murray had the blowout. Figured they would.
(20:22):
The Tigers took care of business forty five eight over
eight Air County, a game in which Watt Robbins was
eleven to nineteen. Won thirty three touchdowns, no picks. They
ran the football twenty four times for one hundred and
fifty eight yards and three more touchdowns. So not the
big numbers, not the like you know. Obviously had good
field position. They scored six total touchdowns and they didn't
(20:44):
even end up with over three hundred yards of offense. It
was less than three hundred yards of offense to do that.
So the Tigers get to win forty five to eight.
That sets up a battle with Hart County, a very
good football team coming up at Murray on Friday night.
And again we'll talk about that later this week. I'll
tell you what I'm up against. Another break. We'll take
that break, we'll come right back. We'll talk more football
and some basketball discussions when we get underweight when we
(21:07):
return on Region one doing sports as we move along
here on your Monday edition of the show, Full Disclosure.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
I ate too much. I wasn't gonna get breakfast this morning.
I had a tire. It's always, it's always like two
ps i.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Lower than the other tires, always, and this morning, of
course of the code whether it really zapped, and well
it had this tire a little two sapped, a little twosap.
So I pulled in and aired up the tire. At
the gas station, I thought, one, we'll go in and
get a coffee. And while I was getting a coffee
with no intention to get food, the Five Star has
the new chicken bacon and waffle sandwich, right, and I thought, well,
(21:55):
I've got to try it.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
First of all, very good.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
Second of all, way too much food, like way more
like a you know, you get a biscuit, you kind
of know what you're in for. You get that, you're
in for a full mill and a sandwich. Way too
much food. I'm feeling it this morning. And that was
that was not a smart choice. Coffee was good. That
was not a smart choice anyway, Doing what I can
to power through an oversized breakfast this morning, let's.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Continue on with our football talk.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
So we talked to one A, two A, and three
A as Callowie, I'm sorry, Callway as Murray moves on.
Let's get into four A football where we had a
couple of teams in our area. One moved on, one
their season came to an end. One of those is
Callowi County. That their season came to an end.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
The Lakers. They had to go on the road to
eat town. That's not fun.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
And they lost that game forty two to seven. That
does not in any way represent the season they had
because they had a good one. You know, I've been
beating that drum all year. I'm not gonna get into
it again. I'm not gonna wax poetically again over the Lakers.
But what a year six and five their final record?
You know again, you got to go back a long
time to find the last winning team for Calloway County.
(23:03):
You got to go back till twenty nineteen to find
the last playoff game for Calloway County. And when some
of these teams opt out of the playoffs and some
of them that are winless on the season and they've
gotten kind of their butts kicked all year and they
don't really have a chance. I mean, you get it,
you understand a little bit, but it means something to
make the playoffs in these districts where it's not an
(23:24):
automatic bid and these districts where you got to win
to get in, it means something. And that meant something
for Callaway County and their season comes to an end
at six and five. Looking at this game on Friday Night,
forty two to seven ends up being the final. It
just couldn't get the pass game going. The run game
not bad Logan Smith's final night running the football for
(23:45):
Calloway County. He had nineteen carries, ninety four yards in
a touchdown. It's not bad. It's pretty good. Twenty three
carries won, sixty four in a touchdown. As a team,
it's pretty good. Just couldn't get the pass game going
nine of twenty one seventy six yards, no picks, no touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
Just could not get it going.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
Something they've when they've had success, they've had a good
pass game and clearly Etown took that away on Friday
Night and they get the forty two to seven win.
So Calloway season comes to an end six and five.
As far as seniors. As far as what they're losing
and what they're returning, They're losing a lot of seniors.
They're losing a lot of seniors, including Logan Smith, who
(24:25):
was a gigantic difference maker in the backfield. Now, the
good news is they got their quarterback back. They got
some other skill guys back. So you know, the hope
is they can just you know, replace and move on.
It's not easy, but that's what good sustained winning programs do.
So we'll see how that goes next season. But what
a year for Calloway County. Their season comes to an end.
(24:46):
Paduca Tilman season continues the Blue Tornado a little bit
closer game than expected. Taylor County came in. They had
lost their last three going into the playoffs. They had
been a good team early in the year and they
made this it's a ball game for a while. It
was like seven to nothing at the end of the
first quarter, ends up being twenty eight nothing. Now Tillman
does pitch the shutout, but not quite the offensive performance
(25:09):
we've seen out of Tilman this year. In fact, their
second lowest offensive total of the year. They scored twenty
two in a loss to Madisonville. So twenty eight is
the is the fewest points they've scored in a win,
but twenty eight nothing ends up being your final in
this football game. Seventeen of thirty three had three interceptions,
(25:30):
one touchdown. A tough night at the office for the
Tilman quarterback Stone Crow. Seventeen of thirty three, three interceptions,
one touchdown, one seventy five In the year, they did
run the football thirty six times for three hundred and
thirty five yards and two touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
That's a lot.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
And in fact, Chase McPike had one carrier for ninety
one yards in a score.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
It's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Avery Thompson had twelve carries for seventy eight yards, so
you can see they were they clearly understood they were
struggling in the pass game in which trying to do
something in that run game.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
It worked.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Three thirty five, two touchdowns, three offensive touchdowns is all
Tilman scored.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
That's crazy. It's crazy.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
And they still win the game because they pitched the shutout,
because their defense showed up and showed out. They will
get Franklin Simpson On Friday, Franklin Simpson theoretically pulled the
upset over John Harden, So Tillman gets to stay in district,
a team they played at Tillman already this year and
one thirty five to fourteen, so you should think that
(26:31):
it'll go about that way. But a familiar team of
district foe in week two and a team that played
them well early in that game before Tilman pulled away.
Still expect Timan to win this game. But this is
it's gonna get interesting. We'll talk about that as the
week goes on. As always, so Tillman wins, they move on,
moving on to Class five. Class five A, Graves County
(26:52):
goes to Bowland Green. And here's the deal. I said
on the ray. If you listen to my radio program
on Friday night, if you listen to our pregame show
on Friday night, I said, if this game becomes a
two or more touchdown game, Bowling Green's gonna win big.
If Graves keeps it close, they're gonna win. But the
only way Graves wins they keep it close. If it
(27:13):
gets to a two touchdown or more lead, Bowling Green
is not only gonna win, they're probably gonna pull away
forty two. Nothing ends up being your final and Graves
moved the football. They did some things. Their first drive
of the football game, they drove the football down the field.
But some of the things that kind of stung them
earlier in the season kind of stung them in this game.
That one step forward, two steps back kind of approach.
(27:36):
Not approach. It's not how they wanted the game to go.
But drove the football down the field and then would
have a you know, a first down play, go for
a seven yard loss and put them behind the sticks.
As long as they stayed ahead of the sticks, they
moved the football, they got behind the sticks, they had
to give the football back to Bowling Green. And Bowling
Green's offense had struggled at times. This season was not
(27:58):
quite the same as it was last season. But man,
they found the creases in the defense. They took advantage of,
you know, Graves trying to keep everything underneath, and they
won forty two to nothing. So they advance. Grave season
comes to an end. Now, I said this on Friday night,
the silver of hope for Graves County. Look, this was
by all means by record, win loss record. You know,
(28:21):
the last time they had a record like this was
twenty eleven, So the last time they didn't reach at
least five wins, so the fewest wins in a season
since two thousand and eleven. What they do the next season,
they came back with a more experienced group. They came
back with a group that that season was a lot
of underclassmen. And the next year in twenty twelve, they
won nine games, and then they won eleven games, and
(28:44):
then they won ten games the year after that. Because
that's what good programs do. They hit a little bit
of a peak in the valley, they hit a little
bit of a lull compared to where they've been the
last few years, and they bounced right back. And I
have no doubt they're going to They'll have twenty two
seniors next year. They'll have a lot of underclas that's
been from this year, that got a lot of experience,
they're battle tested.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
They'll come in knowing their personnel.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
Like all the main skill guys are back, All of
the main guys on defense are back. They suffered injuries
this year with King Matthis going down and Buzanna's going down,
those guys will be back. I expect big things next year,
and then next year, you flip it. You've got Murray
at home. You've got you know, you got Madisonville at home.
They're gonna be down. You got Apollo at home, Marshall's
(29:26):
at home. So you got a lot of things you've
got to be excited about next year. I think next
year is gonna be I'll just go ahead and say,
I think next year's gonna be one of those eight
win teams where they flip it from the four to
the eight. You know, in twenty eleven four wins, next
year nine, You're gonna see something similar next year. But
the Eagles season for this season comes to an end
in the first round of the playoffs. That was five
(29:48):
A football and last but not least, we have six
A football and we have McCracken County, who they got
the win over at Central Harden forty six to seven
on Friday. Now Central Harden will one win team. Central
Harden had had three coaches in the last like three
or four years. They've got coach Gregory now former Graves
County head men, and he's committed to a long term rebuild.
(30:09):
He's committed to come in and get that that school rolling.
They've got the resources. It should work, but it hasn't
and that's what they're trying. But they are in a
rebuild and McCracken County took advantage with a forty six
to seven win. Maddox O'Neill eight of thirteen, won twenty seven,
two touchdowns, no picks. How about the freshman Cole Prestwood
coming in. He was eight of thirteen one to oh
(30:30):
three and three touchdowns. As a team, they ran the
football twenty six times, one hundred and seventy five yards
rushing two rushing touchdowns. On the night McCracken wins, they
get Henderson County, this will be at McCracken.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
This time.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
They went to Henderson and won that game fifty five
to forty two.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
It's gonna be a dogfight, gonna.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Be fun, but you expect Henderson's gonna have trouble with
McCracken's offense and McCracken expected to get the win again
this week. But again we'll talk about that later on.
So that's football. Ooh man again, I told you I
had too big of a breakfast. I'm out of breath
constantly this morning. But that's football. So Grave season comes
to an end, Calloway season comes to an end. Fulton
(31:11):
County season comes to an end later this week. We'll
preview the Mayfield game, the Murray game, Tilman's game, and
McCracken's game as they continue on in the playoffs. Okay,
let's talk some hoops. Let's talk some basketball. Kind of
piggyback on our discussion from last week. I got a
lot of flak. I got a lot of you didn't
talk about us, you didn't talk We're not doing a
(31:32):
full in depth discussion yet.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
When we rank the teams, we'll talk about everybody. You know.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
I love talking about tears. I love talking about how
how you kind of stack the region. So I don't
really want to do that today because I don't want
to give away our power five yet. But let's kind
of talk as we close up shop. We got about
five minutes left together today. Let's talk about contenders and pretenders.
Oh you like that, huh? Contenders and pretenders. Who is
(32:01):
really in contention and and who is hoping to have
a good year and a bounce back year and maybe
just put up a fight this season. I think it
starts on the boys side with mcraken County. As far
as contenders, they are the contender, they are the team
that is gonna be hunted. Talk hunters and hunted. They're
gonna be hunted. With Woodford coming in a healthy Cloak,
(32:22):
You've got Garrett Miller.
Speaker 3 (32:23):
I mean, you got some dudes. They got a lot
of guys back.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
The Grogan kids a senior this year, Carter Hayes is
a senior this year. They got they got a lot
going for them going into this season. Now they've got
and I just named them, They've got you know again, Cloak, Woodford, Miller.
That's a three headed scoring monster for that team. That's
gonna be tough for any team in this region to
keep up with. So they are the team being hunted.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
They are not. They are a true they are the contender.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Now again, I'm not giving away my power five, but
the teams that are still in the hunt, you would
put great Graves County in that conversation. I think they're
gonna be much much better this year than the last
few years. But Graves County is just looking for a
regional tournament win. It's been a minute. Part of the
reason why I'm committed to sticking around and calling games
is I want to see a regional tournament win out
(33:16):
of that program. They've not won a game in the
regional tournament since two thousand and eighteen. I can't even
fathom that. That is like a dream, like a bad dream.
So they're gonna at least look to turn that fortune
around this season and see if they can make a run.
That year, by the way, they were the regional runner up.
(33:36):
Haven't won a game of the regional titles or regional
tournament since that's insane. That is insane. They're a contender
though they're in the Hunt. Marshall County is always a contender.
They're in the Hunt Marshall County with Matthew Langey. I know, listen,
it's gonna be interesting to see how they replace the
scoring of Robertson and Staples, because it hurt when they
(33:58):
lost one of those guys last year. Did but they've
got a veteran group back, they've got depth, they've got
guys that buy in defensively again, they've got Matthew Langey
who can go get buckets, who are the secondary and
tertiary scores for them. When we start to they know
we don't yet, when we start to see that come
into the fold, I think you're gonna see a team
(34:18):
that's clearly in the hunt, clearly contending again. And then
after that, again, this is not necessarily a power five.
That's not even the order I would put my teams
in right now. But after that, I think Murray is
gonna be a surprise team this year. I think that's
a team that you're gonna look at and you're gonna
they are a contender now. Again, to say they're a favorite,
(34:39):
that's not what I'm saying. Are they a team in
the hunt? Are they a team that is in the
in the conversation to hunt down those teams ahead of them. Yes,
And we'll talk to coach Doss later today and I'll
have that interview for you later this week. But I
would look to them. I would look to you know,
everybody's gonna look at Saint Mary As being down. I
think they're in the contender conversation now. They're gonna be
(35:02):
in a battle. They're gonna be a dogfight. Because listen,
you can say all day long that yes, they are
not a pretender. But losing a Luke Simms is gonna
be rough, Losing a guy like that, Losing Brett Haas
is gonna be an adjustment.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
I know they got dudes. I get it.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Losing production is always tough to replace, no matter how
talented you are. So I'm not putting them in the
pretender category. Put them in the contender category. They're in
the hunt. Be interesting to see how good they are.
You'd never count out Mayfield. They're not a pretender. I
think you got to settle them in that conversation because
they'll find a way in the end, Paduka Tillman, everybody's
gonna talk about how they lost woodwork. They still got talent.
(35:41):
We'll see how that goes. But I don't think they're
in that pretender conversation. And then after that, yeah, you
kind of start, you know, count Carlisle, Carlile is not
in that partender conversation. They've got everybody back. They're good,
they've got bigs, they've got skill guys. They're good. And
then after that you're gonna see guys that are whole
to just be improved and be in that other side
(36:02):
of the conversation that's on the boys side.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
On the girls side.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
I think you have five teams that you put in
that contender category. I think everybody else is playing for
trying to get into the regional tournament, trying to get
a regional tournament win. But on the girls side, and
again no particular order, it's Callaway, Graves, Marshall, McCracken and Mayfield.
Now those teams are clearly the stronger teams. Those teams
will show themselves to be the stronger teams all year.
And we're out of time, all right, didn't have as
(36:28):
much time as I thought. We'll have more time later on,
back on Wednesday with more. I hope you've enjoyed this.
