Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five the Fad Anyway we go.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
This is your Wednesday, November twelfth edition of the Region
one Sports Report. I'm Brian York, and I hope you're
doing fantastic on this Wednesday. It's been chilly, it's been cold,
and it's starting to warm up a little bit, which
I'm here for all these people that say I like
the cold weather. You can have it, you can keep it,
you can enjoy it. We're gonna get back into the
sixties today. It's gonna be in the seventies this weekend.
(00:36):
That's insane, seventy three. On Saturday, I was sort of
anti put my Christmas lights up, but I kind of
don't have an excuse. On Saturday, I was gonna try
to go deer hunting, but it's gonna be warm, so
I guess I'm gonna stay home put Christmas lights up. Yay,
But it is getting warmer as the week goes on,
and I'm I'm actually kind of here for that, kind
of here for that. Nonetheless, you need to get in
(00:58):
touch with us on the show. You can do so
via our text line at two seven oh five three
four forty three oh eight. That's two seven oh five
three four forty three oh eight. That is the number,
UH to text. You can call. I mean, I probably
won't answer, but you can call, leave a voice, smail,
or do whatever you need to do, UH and to
get in touch with the show. So we got a
lot of fun to get into today. It's my least
(01:20):
favorite episode of the year. We're gonna go ahead and
do power Rankings. I know, normally I preview it, normally,
I put it out and I tease it and I
say Power Rankings are coming up and this and that.
But we're gonna do it today because if you listen
to Monday's show, I don't know the future next week.
I don't know what's gonna happen here on the show
as far as if it's gonna be on the radio,
(01:41):
if it's gonna stay just podcast only, And then if
it does stay podcast only, the days may shift. We
may have to shift when the episodes come out, or
even how many episodes. So there's still a lot to
be determined, and I don't want to risk it. So
while we know we are on the radio, while we
know we're on a three Day three episode, this week's schedule,
(02:02):
let's go ahead and new power rankings. Let's get those
to the people. And I say it's my least favorite day. Listen.
I love these discussions. I love the topic. I love
getting into the nuances of what makes teams good and
why they're going to be good and maybe if they're
going to be in a down year, why that may be.
Who's in the hunt? We've kind of talked about that,
who are the true title contenders, who's being chased, who
(02:23):
are the teams trying to catch them? And you know
how big is that gap? Like we get into all
of that when we do these kind of shows, and
those are the discussions I like. What I don't like
is actually having to rank the teams. And I like
it because you're always wrong. You're always wrong. Listen. I
looked at the rankings, and I know some of you
out there saw these the nation's elite, especially if you're
(02:43):
on X, if you're on Twitter. And I looked at
the rankings and even I went, are you kidding me?
So there's never been a ranking ever put out, especially
in the preseason, that doesn't get that reaction. You might
agree with two teams and two spots. But whether you
do a Power five, a top ten, a rank every team,
there's gonna be somebody guaranteed going are you kidding me?
(03:07):
So that's the part I don't like. I love the discussion,
don't like actually doing the rankings. But nonetheless, we've got
to get into this today because I do want to
and we've got to, So let's do it. We're gonna
get into the power rankings today. Listen, I tried to
rank every team. I'll just be honest. I'll just be honest.
On the boys side, you know, I thought there were
(03:29):
about seven teams, eight teams, maybe nine teams even competing
for a top five spot. On the girls side, I
think there is a solid five, and I think there
is a gap after that, and then after that, I
think you can, you know, you can talk about four
other teams in the rankings, but then I think there's
just a bigger gap even after those next four teams.
(03:50):
On the boys side, like I said, I think there's
eight or nine that can make an argument to be
in the Power five in the preseason and various reasons why.
But then I think there's a pretty good drop off
after that, and so I originally sat down and said,
I'm just gonna do ten. I'm gonna do the Power five,
but I'm gonna ahead and give the next five. I
couldn't come up with the next five. I could come
(04:10):
up with the next four, but I really struggled with
that tenth team, that tenth spot. So we're gonna we're
gonna rank the power five, and then we're gonna talk
about teams that were in the discussion. But I'm not
gonna go through each team and rank each team and
do you know one through sixteen or even one through ten.
It's just not gonna do it. So we'll do a
power five. I'll give you sort of the bubble teams,
(04:32):
who's in the discussion and why, and that'll be that'll
be the heart the soul of our basketball conversation today. Now,
after we talk basketball, we've got to start talking a
little football. We still have teams alive in the playoffs
for Week two of the playoffs, so we'll get into
some of that today as well. And then on Friday,
you know, I'm kind of kicking around. On Friday, we'll
kind of do our players to watch, so we'll kind
(04:53):
of do the preseason, you know, first Team, second Team
All Region One. We'll kind of do that on Friday.
So that's the plan, that's the goal. That's the where
we're headed. As the week goes on, other pieces of
business we're trying to I'm trying to get mister Andrew
Clinton on. He's got a fantastic new book and it's
really I say book, it's really just a historical god.
(05:16):
But it's great. You can get it on Amazon. It's
called Kentucky Region one Basketball Historical God. It's a paperback book.
I think right now it's for sale for thirty three dollars.
You can get it. I don't think you can get
it through Yeah, you can get it through Prime, so
you can get it delivered as of looks like this Saturday.
So if you order today, you can have it by
the weekend. Kentucky Region one Basketball Historical God, written by
(05:41):
mister Andrew D. Clinton. Now he's going to be on
the show at some point. We're working that out schedules
and things and how we're going to do that. But
he's going to be on the show at some point
to talk about it. But the description on Amazon, it
says inside the book, readers will find all time records
for every school in Region one history. Did you hear
me when I said that every school in Region one history,
(06:03):
all time records, thousand points, scorers from every program, boys
and girls, District, regional and state champions and runners up.
Complete coaching index every coach that have ever led a
Region one team. They're coaching records and special honors. All
A Classic and Kentucky two A champions, Sectional and State titles,
All Purchase and All State honors recognizing the region's finest players.
(06:27):
It's pretty cool stuff. That's just some That's just some
of what it includes. The book also ranks the most
successful programs in players in Region one history, including teams
of the most wins, district titles, regional titles, teams of
the highest scoring performances. Players are the most points in
a game, season and career, and leaders and points per
game average by season. It covers nineteen twenty through last season. Listen,
(06:54):
I'm telling you you're gonna want this book. You're gonna need.
If you listen to this show, you are exactly who
this book. I'm getting paid nothing to endorse it. I'm
getting nothing from this. I'm just telling you this is
the kind of stuff I'm into. This is the stuff
that gets me excited. I've got football GUIDs for different
teams over the years that have all this, you know,
(07:14):
depth to them and records and things like that that
are awesome. This is a must. This is a must
going into basketball season. It's three hundred and seventy one pages.
It's it's great. And again, if you get it on
Amazon Prime, which is where you can buy it, it's
thirty three dollars ninety three cents and you can have
it by this weekend. Again, Kentucky Region won Basketball Historical God,
(07:38):
it's paperback. It's incredible. I just got mine. I've kind
of flipped through it. I haven't got it fully read yet.
You obviously it's not really a book you read chapter
by chapter. But it's a great reference. God, and I'm
telling you you're gonna want it. Or what a great
gift for that basketball fan in your life. You know.
Maybe hey, listen, nudge your significant other and say, I
(07:58):
listened to the Region one Sports and I think this
book would be fantastic for Christmas. You probably get it
in your stocking, right just saying, drop the hints, Kentucky
read you one Basketball Historical Guide. And you can find
that on Amazon. But we're gonna talk to mister Andrew
Clinton at some point. He's gonna discuss it further. We're
gonna talk to mister Brockman on the assistant ads at
Marshall County. He's gonna come on and discuss this year's
(08:21):
hoop Fist, which I think has gotten better and better
year after year. I think they have done a fantastic
job of sort of taking what hoop Fest used to
be back in the day when it was nothing but
the prep schools and that was the highlight, and kind
of mixing and mingling that with some of those great
prep games, mixed in with some great local teams getting
(08:41):
a shot to play teams that they would never other
play otherwise. You know, a Graves County gets to play
an opponent they would never play otherwise. Marshall County is
going to plan opponent they otherwise would never get a
shot to take the floor with. So I think they've
done a great job of integrating the local teams and
sort of integrating those games into what hoop Fest used
to be, and it's to me is as good now
(09:03):
as it's ever been. So we're gonna talk to mister
Brockman about this year's hoop Fest, what's coming up and
why you need to go again. Basketball lovers, this is
your episode, that's your book, and hoop Fest is going
to be your event this year. I think it's the
best like it in the region. And we'll talk about
that more with him when he comes in. Still working
on talking with coach DAWs at Murray. He's going to
(09:25):
be our first coach interview for the basketball season. We'll
get that interview hammered out. You'll hear that as soon
as we get it done. So a lot of things
to get to basketball wise here on the show, and
again as the show is able to be put out.
I hope nothing changes. I hope next week you have
three episodes Monday, Wednesday Friday on ninety nine to five
(09:46):
of the Fan and three episodes waiting for you and
your podcast feed. If that changes, you'll definitely have episodes.
We'll just have to figure out how, when and the
frequency of those episodes. But the show continue, and that's
why we're trying to get all of this in this
week and trying to get all of it in as
soon as we can because there's still some unknowns Here's
(10:08):
what I know. Here's what I know. I have the
Power five, your top five teams in the region going
into the basketball season, the Region one Sports Power five
preseason rankings. We'll get to that in a moment. We'll
take a break, we'll come back. We'll start with the
boys side. We'll get to it when we return. This
is Region one Sports. What would you say, sports, real sports,
(10:28):
total coree basketball.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Football, Baseball.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
We have one goal here, Hello sports fans.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
The Region one Sports Report on ninety nine to five
the fan.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Reagon one Sports. Rolling along here on your Wednesday edition
of the show Basketball Time. We're have been basketball preseason
Power five. Yes we are. I told you it's my
favorite least favorite episode of the year. So let's just
do this now. I always preface this and when we
get into the season. There's a simple formula for our
power five rankings. It's essentially, who did you play, how
(11:12):
did you do, and what did we think you were
going to do? So you don't really get punished for
losing to a team that you were supposed to lose to.
You'll get credit for beating a team that you weren't
supposed to beat. And it really comes down to strength
of schedule and are you matching your strength of schedule.
That's kind of how we base the Power five rankings.
Once we get in the season, it's sort of our
(11:32):
god to make sure that we at least have a
formula we follow, so it's not just off the top
of the head. Sometimes it is. It still upsets people,
but at least I try to have a formula to show.
For the preseason rankings, the formula is still there, it's
just different. And my formula for the preseason rankings is
what did you do last year? What did you lose?
(11:54):
What did you bring back off that team? So teams
that maybe didn't do as good life last year but
brought everybody back are gonna get a big bump in
the in the rankings going into the season, versus teams
that might have been successful but lost some dudes and
they're gonna take a little bit of a fall. Doesn't mean,
you know, some preseason rankings they try to do them
(12:15):
based on how they think the region will finish. I'm
not trying to predict anything. I'm trying to say going
into the first games of the year, these are the
teams to kind of watch and the teams we think
are going to be better, but I'm acknowledging that that
will change. I'm acknowledging that we're gonna get two weeks
into the season and we're gonna have a power five
potentially blown all to pieces. And that's fine because there
(12:38):
are things in high school basketball more than any other sport.
There are things called the unknown, and those unknowns are
are are guys like you know, how much does that
transfer affect the team positively and negatively? How much does
that incoming freshman gonna gonna elevate the team. There's just
things we don't know, so we try to think, take
the things that we do, what did you do last season?
(12:59):
Who would you lose? Who'd you bring back? And that's
sort of how we base our power five. So with
that said, I know that that still won't be enough
for anybody to be happy with me. But with that said,
let's do our power five. We started the boys' side,
and I'm going to go one through five because I
think on both the boys and the girls' side, I
think the top two maybe three teams are a little
(13:23):
more evident than the others. So we'll go one through five.
So on the boys, side shocker, I've got McCracken County.
I mean, talk about what did you do and what
did you bring back? Now, this was a team coming
off of one of their worst seasons in quite a while,
not a winning record last season, fourteen and fourteen. In fact,
(13:43):
they finished seven and eight in the region. To add
too that they were not in the regional tournament. How
in the world did they go from fourteen and fourteen
to not making the regional tournament to being a game
under in Region one play, which is what this is
all based on. How do you go from that to
number one the next season? Well, you bring not only
(14:06):
everybody back, but you add to that a Jackson Clope
who was out all of last season. You add to
that a transfer in Miles Woodfork, who is the preseason
favorite as the regional player of the year, and you
have a starting lineup that, let's just be honest, is
a little bit scary for other teams in the region
to face. That's how you shoot to number one, That's
(14:27):
how you get there. That's the same thing Calloway did
last season. Calloway had all the talent in the world. Missed,
lost out, missed opportunity the year before, and they came
back last year as the preseason number one best starting
lineup in the region. They won the region. You could
say the same thing with McCracken County this season. A
healthy Jackson Clope, a true big, skilled big, they've got
(14:49):
guard play, They've got Miller back, one of their top scorers,
and then they add Woodford. Come on, they did lose
Jase Dawson, Dylan Jackson, and Carson Wallace. Those you know,
Jackson was a starter, I don't remember. I think Dawson
started a little bit. I don't remember if Wallace did.
But they lost three good seniors, don't get me wrong,
but all that talent back. Yeah, they're in the preseason
(15:12):
number one watch out from akracken County, so they're number one,
number two sort of the same reason. What did you
do last year? What are you bringing back? This is
where things get a little more even. I think there
is at least going into the season, a little bit
of separation with McCracken and whoever falls into the two spot.
(15:33):
But I think things with the number two and three
team especially, are are fairly even. Are fairly back and forth.
You could flip these teams and I don't think you're
gonna have a wrong answer, but for me, and you
can scream at me all you want about being the homer.
I put Grapes County in the spot. The Eagles were
nineteen and ten a year ago. Now, I know they
(15:53):
lost Braydon Waller. I know he was a big part
of being nineteen and ten, but they've got a lot
of guy's back. You've got new energy in the building
with coach Kimbler stepping in to the head coaching spot.
Ty Cavot, Reagan, Mathis Body, Vakasivik all back. You add
a transfer, you add I think they're going to be
good now again better than Marshall. That's who I've got
(16:15):
number three. I don't know. I think you can flip
these teams. I think you're talking two A, two B
when it comes into preseason rankings. But I'll go with
Graves because I think their guard play is going to
be really, really good this year. They got a lot
of chemistry. There are a lot of juniors with a
lot of experience now on the varsity level. So I'll
put the Eagles at number two. Number three is Marshall County.
(16:39):
Now here's why again I dropped Marshall at least going
into the season one spot below Graves. What helps Marshall
is you've got Matthew Langy. You've got you know, if
Woodford's the best player in the region and Klope is
gonna be up there, with some consideration, Matthew Langy's the
second best player in the region. You could argue maybe
the best player in the region. So you've got Langy
(16:59):
that keeps you in the conversation, and you've got a
system that works. You've got a coach that knows how
to coach teams to victories. You've got every you know,
they're going to buy indefensively, they're going to play like
a team. But they did lose three of their top
four scores. They lost Staples, Robertson, and Phillips. I mean literally,
Phillips eleven points a game, Staples fourteen a game, Robertson
(17:20):
eleven a game. There was a big drop off after that. Now,
I think those guys are good. I think, you know,
I've been seeing Kayden Moeller's praises forever. I think he
is the most underrated point guard of the region. He's
just that guy. He just handles the ball, gets it
where it needs to go, sets them up where they
need to be. Plays great defense, rebound, I mean just
kind of gives you everything you need that doesn't always
show up in the stat sheet. They've got a lot
(17:42):
of guys like that. What they need is people to
step up and take over that twelve points, thirteen points,
ten points per game mark. So a few more question
marks for Marshall County than the teams ahead of them.
But make no mistake, they're going to be in this
thing all the way to the end because they do
have one of the best players, if not the most
talented player in the region, and they always have great
(18:06):
supporting cast members, guys that are all around him that
can do things and make you pay. They've always got
that shooter in the corner. They've always got a defense
that will grind you out, that will punish you for
not taking care of the basketball. The question is do
they have enough secondary tertiary scoring, and we need to
see that before we put them higher. But they're in
the mix. So mccracket at one right now, graves it
(18:28):
to Marshalled at three and then things get a little interesting.
And again, what's the formula for the preseason ranking why
did you do last season? Who did you bring back? Well,
the team I put at number four brought pretty much
everybody back, and that would be Carlisle County. Now I
get it, they were fourteen and seventeen last season. They
went through their lumps, they lost to teams that are
(18:49):
going to be ranked below them to start the season.
I get it. But they brought a lot of guys back.
And you talk about what separates a team, you know,
for McCracken, they've got the best starting lineup right now,
they've got something at every position. For Graves, I think
their guard play is going to elevate them. For Marshall,
they've got Langy. They've got a unique guy that can
stretch the floor and rise up over smaller guys. For
(19:11):
Carlole County, they've got maybe the best true big or
skilled big in the region. Now. I know Klope is
in that conversation, but so is this kid White Ricord,
and he's back seventeen points, eight and a half rebounds
per game. In fact, they bring back three of their
top four production players from last season. So for that
reason they go to number four. But hear me out,
(19:32):
just like I think you can interchange Graves and Marshall
in the two spot. In the three spot, I think
you can interchange Carlisle County with our number five team,
which is Saint Mary. I don't think there's a wrong
answer there now. I'm not quite ready to elevate Carlile
County or Saint Mary to the three or to the
two spot. Don't get me wrong, but I think these
teams falling at four and five are interchangeable as well.
(19:53):
And Saint Mary, for me, comes in at number five.
Phenomenal season last season, getting to the regional tournament for
the first time in forever. The thing is, they do
bring a lot of really good players back, but they
lost Luke Simms, who was otherworldly for them. Now, I
think Griffin Mays is gonna be good, but there's gonna
be a lot more attention paid to Griffin Mays this
season without Luke Simms, without Brad Haas. They bring back
(20:14):
Andrew Puckett, they bring back Ashton Spur, they bring back
you know May's. So there's a lot to like here.
And again, I don't think you've got a wrong answer here.
I know I'm gonna get here. No Saint Mary b
Carli again losing Luke Mays is big. That's big, at
least going into the season. So my power five, but
Crack at number one, Graves at number two, Marshall at three.
(20:36):
But you can interchange Marshall and Graves. I still like
Graves a little bit more, a little bit more known
going into the season than Marshall. And then four and
five are Carl Island Saint Mary and I think, again,
you're not gonna be wrong interchanging those teams. But I
do like that as my top five. I do like
that as the five going into the season. Then you've
(20:56):
got some teams on the bubble. Then you've got some
teams on the bubble. One of those teams for me
is Murray. How We're gonna talk to coach DAWs at
some point this week, but you've got Murray High. Murray
Hi brings back a lot of things to like. They
bring back a new energy with coach Dass taken over.
You know, they've got Maddix Mitchell, they got Harris Moore,
they got Wye Robbins, They've got all those guys back.
(21:18):
I think they're gonna play an upbeat, sort of up
tempo style of offense. They're gonna be a lot of
fun to watch. So I've got them on the bubble.
I've got Mayfield on the bubble. I think they lost
some dudes that more than even the year before is
gonna hurt them. They lost some some top scores, they
lost some shooters, but you know they're gonna find a
way in the end to be in the conversation. I've
(21:40):
got Paduka Tilman. Here's the thing about Tillman. They are
a complete unknown, complete unknown. They graduated a lot of production.
They lost Woodford over Street out as coach. I think
they're gonna be better than people expect. I'm not not
nowhere near where I think they'll be in the top
five at least to start the season, but they'll be
better than people expect. But we still have so many
(22:01):
unknowns with them. And then Callaway lost a ton of
production off that team. Luke Armstrong's pretty good ball player.
How much can they build around him and and sort
of rebuild and revamp that team. So for me, those
are the teams on the bubble. I think your power
five going to the year. McCracken, Graves, Marshall, Carlisle, Saint
(22:22):
Mary with some argument over which spots some of those
teams fall in and then on the bubble, teams that
will be kind of coming in and out of the
Power Five, teams that might find themselves in it and
never out of it the rest of the season. Are
teams like Murray, I'm sorry, Tillman, Callaway, Mayfield, and then
(22:42):
after that I talked earlier, there's separation, right I think
one through five. I think one to two, whoever's in
the two spot, there's separation, two, three, Maybe a little
separation with four and five maybe, but I don't maybe
not maybe not any five to six, five to whoever's
on that bubble. Again, a little bit of separation. But
(23:04):
once you get through those top nine, and that's really
the nine teams I just gave you, there's a big
gap between nine and whoever comes in at number ten.
I just I just don't think there's anybody that we
didn't mention that's gonna break into the Power five as
the season goes on. So right now, I'm a cracking
your preseason favorite. They're the team everybody's chasing, and and
(23:25):
I think I think those are the eight teams behind
them are all going to make an argument for the
Power five at some point that's the boy's side. Let's
take a break, collect my thoughts again and redirect. We'll
talk girls basketball when we come back. They're Power five
on the way on Region one.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
High school hoops on Region one Sports Town.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
What if everybody's so patchy? Here the fantastic region? What
sports our final seven? Here? On your Wednesday edition of
the show. All right, we did boys power five In
case you missed it, or in case you need a reminder,
mccrackett is at number one, Graves two, Marshall three, Carlisle
and Saint Mary. And again, I think you could kind
of argue for two through five and being in different spots,
(24:12):
and you probably wouldn't be wrong on the bubble for me,
as Murray, Mayfield, Callaway and Tilman a lot more question
marks than answers. But I think those teams will pop
in and out of the Power five as the season
goes on. Now to the girl's side. And here's the
thing with the girl's side. Like I said, I think
everybody on the boy's side's chasing mccrackett. And then you've
(24:33):
got two through eight that could kind of cause some
commotion and cause a ruckus on the girl's side. I
think I think, although we do have a number one,
defiantly as we go into the season, I think it's
way more wide open. But I think there are only
five true teams that really can say they have a shot.
I think once you get after our power five, there
(24:54):
is a gap, much more so than when you get
through the boys side. So let's do this because I
think again number one is kind of you could argue
unanimous across all the rankings that are out there in
Calloway County. Now, they did lose essentially two seniors that
were starters. Now I know they lost one of them
earlier in the season that Madison Futill ended up hanging
it up before the postseason. But they lost their third
(25:17):
score in J. C Crouch. And that's big because if
you looked at CALLOWI last season, they were led by
Low and Coke. They did most of the damage. In fact,
they made up I think what fifty plus percent of
the production. Let me look at that. Yeah, they were
sixty two percent of their offensive production last season and
they're back. So that's what puts them at number one. J.
C Crouch had nine points a game. After that, Angie
(25:38):
Emory scored four game now, I think she'll be better
this season. She's got more experienced, she's a good shooter.
I think she'll step into that tertiary row. I think
she'll step into that spot that Crouch had as far
as making up for that production. But then there's another
big drop off after that. So what I'm saying is
their depth might be a little bit of concern.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
Now.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
I know they got to transfer. I know they got
an eighth grader they're excited about who came over for
Murray in the Haines Kid, and I think she'll step
into that role. She'll be a starter. She'll be but
she's young, right, She's young, and so there is a
drop off. But sixty two percent of your production back
in girls basketball, that is a lot and that can
carry you a long way. So Calloway at number one,
(26:18):
I don't like their depth as much as the other teams,
but man, their top heavy is more than anybody in
the region. So Calloway at one, number two, are you
ready for this? I've got Marshall County now, I know
the Lady Marshall's again. They lost Skyler Waller. That was
a big production for them as well. But they're always
well coached. Clearly, they're always a perennial and they've got
(26:40):
a lot of pieces back as well. You should be
excited about. Addie wall Is back, Kinsley Terry Is back,
Eden Sandlin is back, Jessica Reid, the little point guard,
a freshman from last season, back Ryland Darnell. I mean,
they have got they're long, they've got good athletes, They've
got some length, and I think even without Waller out
(27:00):
there knocking down three after three after three, they've got
a lot that you're gonna like. I mean, Terry last
season thirteen and a half a game, wall last season
ten a game. So Marshall County in the hunt. They
return quite a bit of production from last season and
a team that was right there in it, in fact
right there in it the defending regional champs. So they've
(27:22):
got a lot to like. They come in at number two.
Number three on the list is Graves County. Now you
could argue again lost a lot right one of the
best seasons regular seasons in Lady Eagle history at twenty
eight and three, coming up short and being upset in
that tournament by Callaway County. They lost again. Talk about production,
lost a lot of good seniors on that team. You
(27:45):
lost Hannahglisten again, player of the Year last season. Hard
to replace those. Sometimes it is Addison Woodowski in the
comeback of the of the Millennium at nine points a game,
so two of their top three. In fact, you lost
Kaylee win for you lost three of your top four
production players. But they are the deepest team in the region.
I like Callaway top heavy. I like Calloway's top two.
(28:05):
I like Marshall's starting five, and I like Graves County
one through eight. I think Callaway's got the best duo
at the top. Marshall has as good as starting lineup
as you're gonna find, and then Graves has one through
eight better than anybody else in the region. They've got
a lot of players, you know, adle Vikasovic and Carly
Goatlee and Sydney Shay and Kinsey Burgess, like a lot
(28:26):
of names. They are gonna pop on that list this year.
They're gonna lead them, but it's gonna be more of
a team this season than a Hannah Glisten or a
couple of years ago, Morgan Alexander having to lead the way.
They'll have kind of like Kentucky basketball on any given night,
you'll see a lot of different leading scorers. I think
for them, Ginger Martin. Don't forget about Ginger Martin. I
think she's an all purchase player going into the year.
(28:48):
So I like their depth, I like my Lady Eagles,
and I think, by the way, those three especially are
are the three to beat for different reasons. Calloway at one,
Marshal at two, Graves at three, those are the three
teams to me, if I'm a betting man, I'm placing
a bet on one of the odds are a little
bit better for Callaway going in the year, But I'm
placing the bets on one of those three cutting down
(29:09):
the nets at the end of the year that does
not roll out. Our fourth and fifteen coming in at
number four for me is McCracken County. Now, I think
you could interchange McCracken at number four with our number
five team, spoiler Mayfield. They both bring pretty much everybody back.
For McCracken, they get Avia Hughes back when of the
top scorers in the region, they get all their starters back,
(29:31):
all their depth pieces, all their role players off of
a team last season that went eighteen and fourteen. But
what gave them the edge for me because Mayfield brings
absolutely everybody back, and they've got a new coach and
coach Faust, and they've got one of the top scorers
in the region in Maze. But what gave McCracken the
edge for me is based on last season mccra Mayfield
(29:52):
both times they played that included in the regional tournament,
a ten point win in the regional tournament. So both
teams brought everybody back. One team's got a stable coaching
coach Sibyls, an other team with a new coaching coach, Faust,
And for those reasons, I elevate McCracken just above Mayfield,
but I think they're both in the hunt. So our
top five in girls basketball Callaway at one, Marshalled at two,
(30:14):
Graves at three, may I'm sorry, mccracking at four, Mayfield
at five, and then I think there's a gap, and
I think there's a pretty decent gap. Nation's elite had
Paduca Tilman in the top five. Sorry, it's just not there.
They've got one of the best players in the region,
they've got a new coach. I just don't they had
trouble even getting numbers to play this summer. Like, I
(30:36):
just don't see them being a top five team now
I could. You know, Carlisle County lost a lot, but
they are always a team in the hunt. I think
Ballord will be a little bit better than last season.
I think Murray will be better than last season. I
think Saint Mary will be pretty solid. But man, there's
just a to me, there's a big gap between five
and six, at least this season. So again, on the
(31:02):
boys side, you've got mccracking at one, Graves at two,
Marshal at three, Carlisle at four, Saint Mary at five,
and you can make an argument to change some of
those around. On the girl's side, Callaway at one, Marshal
at two, Graves at three, mccracking at four, Mayfield at five.
I'm feeling pretty good about that. So that is our
(31:22):
power rankings. That's our preseason power rankings here on Region one. Now,
before I hang it up today, we've got football, Yeah
we do. It's playoff time, playoff tom Now, I don't
have time to get into all this. We'll break them
down more on Friday. Give you the picks, give you
the previews. But two for me, that are the most interesting, honestly,
(31:43):
are going to be Franklin Simpson and Paduca Tilman. Franklin
Simpson was the second best team in that district all year.
They lost to Tilman thirty five to fourteen. Tilman had
issues last week. Tilman struggled at times last week. Now
they shut out the Cardinals of a Taylor County, but
they're offence did sputter a little bit last week. Franklin
Simpson is a better football team, so we'll see how
(32:04):
that goes. Now, Tilman's a favorite, but I think this
is gonna be closer, or rather a close game and
one to watch this week with Tilman and Franklin Simpson,
I do expect Tilman to move on. The other one
to watch I think is going to be interesting is
Murray and Hart County. Murray again unbeaten going into this one.
They had a big win over eight Air County last week.
Heart County. They're really good. Now here's the little nugget.
(32:27):
Hart County struggled to beat a bag Trig County team.
They did lose to a good Logan County team close,
and they did blow out a lot of teams, but
they also blowed out a lot of bad teams. I
think Murray still clearly the favorite. I think they'll win
by three touchdowns, but one to at least keep an
eye on. And then Mayfield, you know, not to leave
them out. Listen. I think McCracken's gonna roll. I think
(32:50):
they get Henderson. I think they win by two or
three touchdowns. But Mayfield's got one that'll be interesting this week.
Hancott County is not bad. They're not great, but they're
not bad, so that'll be one to watch now. They
did lose to Union County, and Union County was not
great this season, so I do think Mayfield roles. Here's
what I'm saying. We'll get into more of this and
break down the stats and give you the reasons why.
(33:14):
But I still think you might steal. I think there's
a good chance you see a lot of lopsided games.
I also think there's a chance you could see one
upset this week. Something to keep an eye on for
Friday night. All right, that's it for me. We're out
of time, I'm out of topic, I'm out of breath.
We'll be back on Friday with more football stuff, more
basketball stuff. Yeah, we'll do our preseason power players. That's
(33:37):
what I'll call out this year. See, I just makes
stuff up on the spot. We'll do our top ten
players and basketball on Friday. Until then, hope you've enjoyed.
