Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five the Fare presented by the
Orthopedic Institute. And away we go your Friday edition of
the show. In fact, it is a Friday. What is it,
November fourteenth edition of the Region one Sports Report. I'm
Brian Yorke. I hope you're doing fantastic, doing well, doing

(00:27):
great on this Friday. Go to be much warmer this weekend.
This weather it's killing me, It's absolutely killing Me's brutal.
It's freezing cold, record lows one day and that's approaching
record Hiz this weekend. Everybody's getting sick. I wonder why
I'm sick of the weather. Sick of the weather. But
hopefully you're doing well on this Friday. Some of you

(00:48):
still have football games to go to. Of course we'll
talk about that later on today and we'll get into
more of our basketball discussions today. As always, you can
get a hold of us. You can get in touch
with me on our text line at two seven oh
five three four forty three oh eight. That number again,
two seven oh five three four forty three eight. All right,
here's the deal. Kind of want to start off and

(01:09):
need to start off with an update. If you listen Wednesday,
if you've actually listened the last two episodes, you know
that I'm changing jobs. So my full time position is
I'm leaving that position here at the radio station and
taking a position with a different company. I'm going to
be the marketing director at Kentucky Oaks Mall. So I
start that venture on Monday. But in leaving there were

(01:33):
a couple of things that were important to me. It
was important that I have a job that I have
time to go do Graves County Sports, and I'm still
going to do that. And it was important to me
to have a job that I could find a way
to keep doing Region one sports because this has been
as important, if not more important to me than just
about anything else in my career. And so that was
that was something we had needed to work out. And

(01:54):
I told you on Wednesday that the future of the
show was still a little bit in doubt if it
was going to stay on the radio or just be
a podcast, and I was fine with either way. In fact,
the bulk of our audience is on the podcast, so
I was fine. Well, I found out Wednesday it's going
to stay on the radio, So good news to you,
to our regular listeners, to our Monday, Wednesday and Friday

(02:16):
of radio listeners. The show will remain on the radio
three days a week, as you've come to know it.
So that was important to me. So that's the update.
Things are changing for me. It's going to create more work,
So be it, because, like I said on Wednesday, these
these athletes, these coaches, these families deserve the coverage and
it's one small way that we can shine that light

(02:38):
and we can provide coverage to this region. So I'm
glad it can continue. I'm glad it can continue in
the form that you know it now. There will be
some things you'll notice. The audio quality, as far as
the sound of my voice might not be as good.
I'll no longer be recording it in an actual professional
studio with professional microphones and mixers and everything. It'll be

(03:00):
recorded on a USB microphone. It'll be recorded from the
comforts of my home. In fact, it'll be recorded in
my walk in closet because it's the only room in
my house that doesn't echo sound. So it'll be different.
It'll be an experience, but it'll still be the same
region on sports. It'll still be the same coverage. It'll
still come out the same days. Now here's the thing.
If you're a podcast listener, you'll actually get the show

(03:23):
the night before it airs. So the Monday show for
the radio people, the podcast will be out on Sunday night.
The Wednesday show, it'll be out on Tuesday night. For
the Thursday show, it'll be out on Wednesday night. So
you'll actually get a little bit of an advance on
the episodes. That's about the only thing that'll change, though,
and I'm happy for that. I had several people the

(03:45):
last few days, several reach out to me and ask
about the future of the show and if I can't
continue it, could we find somebody that could. And I agree,
And I've always said that there will be a day.
There will be a day where it becomes too much.
It's too hard, it's too different cult for me to
keep up a three episode a week schedule, or keep
it up at all. Like I said, I'm changing careers,

(04:07):
and that career has to come first. That's the one
paying the bills. This just doesn't pay me anything. So
there will be a day when it becomes too much,
and it's you know, we've been doing this for eight years.
That day's probably come in sooner than later at this point,
and when that happens, hopefully we'll have somebody that can

(04:28):
come along, and hopefully I'll be able to find somebody
that will continue and take the mantle and keep the
keep things going, and keep the fire burning, if you
will keep it going, keep the coverage alive, because as
we've said before, the coverage continues to dwindle in the region,
and that's where I think this show has has really
taken up space. But that's that's tomorrow's problems. As for today,

(04:52):
nothing changes, and I'm happy for that. I'm glad for that,
and I'm proud of that, and I'm proud of you guys.
Thank you because again I say all the time, and
I don't say that to be some kind of Martyred.
I don't want you to feel sorry for me. This
is my hobby, this is my passion. But again, I
don't make money on this. This is something that was
an add on, right and I'm not going to make

(05:15):
anything off of this to continue to do it. This
is a passion project, but it's something I'm passionate about because,
as I said, it's a problem that we don't have
more coverage in this region. And it's not anybody's fault necessarily,
it's the way of the world and the way things
have transpired over the last ten years and just about
every market. So if there's anything I can do, and

(05:37):
that's where this comes in to cover these athletes and
provide a platform, I'm going to continue to do the
best I can and provide that platform. So I'm happy
for that. I'm glad for that. And it's because and
that's the point I was trying to make. It's because
of you, guys. It's because the listenership. If the numbers
were not as high as they are, if we were
not about to abandon hundreds of listeners per episode, and

(06:01):
I know you might be thinking, well, it seemed that
seems low, it's not. We're averaging in basketball season last year,
we averaged just over one thousand listeners a week. There
was a time we weren't doing that in a three
month span. I mean there was a time in those
early days where a thousand took a long time to
get to. We're doing that weekly. And it's because of you,

(06:24):
because I knew likes. That's one more thing. Not covering
these athletes and one more entity not out there to
reach the audience that we're reaching. So I don't get
necessarily any monetary kickback for doing this, but I get
to know that it continues and that the show continues
to grow, which has been amazing, but it continues to

(06:44):
reach an audience that has come to know it, come
to be accustomed to having it, and that was important
to me. So enough about that. I'm not again, it's
not about me. It's about what this show represents. But
it wouldn't it wouldn't exist and it wouldn't continue to
exist post my departure here for time if not for you,
the listener, So thank you for that. All Right. With

(07:05):
that said, with business out of the way, let's take
care of the thing we do here on the show.
Let's talk high school sports. Now. On Wednesday, we started
our basketball coverage. If you missed it, you got to
go listen to it because we gave you our pre
season Power five. We gave that to you earlier in
the year than we normally do. Normally that comes out
the week before the season. Well, with things being a
little uncertain, I didn't want to wait a week before

(07:25):
the season, so you got it already. Our preseason Power
five rankings are out. They're on Wednesday Show. I'm not
going to revisit that today. Go listen to Wednesday Show.
What I will visit today as far as our basketball
discussion is our players to watch. So we'll talk about
not necessarily who we think that the absolute best ten
players in the region are, but we'll talk about the

(07:46):
players to watch off these teams. I'll give you ten
because everybody likes a list, but there might be more.
We might get into this discussion and we might list
our ten and then go also, don't forget. Also don't forget,
and then you start having these other players come into
the discussion. So Wednesday Show Power five Power Rankings, Today's show,
Power Players. How about that? Players to watch, Players we're

(08:08):
excited to see, and players we expect to have good years,
or at least they're going to have to have good
years for their teams to be as good as we
think they can be. How about that. So we'll talk
about that later. Before we get there, we've got football
to talk about because it is Friday, it is week
two of the playoffs, and we still have teams alive
in the football season. For example, you've got Pudukatilman alive tonight,

(08:30):
you've got Murray High. Mayfield plays their first playoff game
in this postseason. All those still teams still a love.
Mccranken County plays Henderson County ton Big One. So we've
got to talk about those, make our picks and predictions
and tell you what to watch for in those games.
After that, we get into our preseason power players on
Region one, and we'll do that after the break. Let's

(08:51):
take a break, let's reset, let's collect our thoughts. We'll
come back with the football, basketball and more right here
on Region one, Region one Sports Hope. It's not Ashton Coucher,
It's Brian York, equally handsome, equally smart. On ninety nine
to five, the fans, I've Reason one Sports moving along

(09:26):
here on your Friday edition of the show. We got
to talk some football. So let's talk some football. Let's
stay in order of class, because that's the best way
I keep up with it even when we get down
to these numbers. But let's talk football playoffs. We've got Mayfield.
Mayfield's still alive, still bouncing around, still out there in
the playoffs. In fact, they're playing their first playoff game
of the season. They had the bye week last week.

(09:47):
They get Hancock County at home homefield advtage for Mayfield.
Always a good thing to have. Hancock County a three
lost team on the season. The Hornets of Hancock County. Uh,
they are eight and three going into this football game.
They throw the football one hundred three yards per game.
They rush at two seventy two per game, seventeen passing
touchdowns to five interceptions, not bad, thirty four rushing touchdowns.

(10:11):
So what does Hancock County like to do? They like
to run the football. They really like to run the football.
I'll compare that and contrast that with Mayfield in a moment.
But the history of this series has been all Mayfield.
In fact, going back to nineteen ninety nine, as far
back as KHSAA will let us see and keeps records.
Going back to nineteen ninety nine, Mayfield has won all
but one meeting. They lost to Hancock County in nineteen

(10:33):
ninety nine. They beat them in two, three, four five,
didn't play again until twenty sixteen, beat them handily, beat
them handily in seventeen and eighteen, and have not played since.
So the last time these two teams played twenty eighteen,
but in the history of the series, Mayfield has more
than been the better team. This history repeat itself twenty

(10:55):
eighteen a long time ago. So Hancock County their opponent tonight,
taking a look at the may Field Cardinals and what
they bring into this very different Mayfield's pass numbers really
good two hundred and two yards per game, twenty eight touchdowns,
three picks, twenty nine rushing touchdowns one fourteen a game.
For Hancock County to have a chance, they've got to
come to Mayfield good luck. They've got to be able

(11:16):
to run the football, control field possession, and when they
flip the field really put Mayfield in a spot. They've
got to drive the football. If they do that, they
have a chance. The moment Mayfield goes up by two scores,
this game's over. So if it happens early, it's over.
If they let Mayfield get a two touchdown lead, they
are not built. Now again, you can pop a big run,
don't get me wrong, but usually teams that have high

(11:38):
running numbers and sort of average to low passing numbers
aren't teams that are going to be able to hit
the big play. And if you can go all in
on the run. If you're Mayfield and keep the you know,
play the pass straight up, you get a two touchdown lead.
It's it feels bigger than that, and it will. So
the moment Mayfield goes up two touchdowns, it's over and
Mayfield's gonna win this game, I think by three or

(11:59):
four score. So that's first up on Friday Night. That's
two a football. Let's go three a football. Murray High.
Murray High's got a little bit of a battle on
their hands. They get Heart County now again, they get
them at Murray High. Heart County a two lost team
on the year. I'm a little key like I think
their record looks better than they are, and i'll explain

(12:20):
nine to two on the season. They throw the football
at one zero six per game, fifteen touchdowns, three picks.
They do have a very senior group in the offensive categories,
and they are very run heavy. Kind of the same
thing I just said about the Mayfield game, you can
repeat for the Murray game. Three hundred and fifteen yards
rushing per game for Hart County, thirty three rushing touchdowns
for Murray High. Let's compare and contrast. First for the

(12:43):
Tigers unbeaten on the year, eleven to zero. Now they
are two hundred and forty six yards passing per game,
thirty two touchdowns, three picks one ninety one rushing per game,
thirty nine touchdowns. Their offense is just too much for
Heart County. And when I said, I think Heart County
is not as good their record, and they've got a
really good record. They struggled with Trigg County. They struggled

(13:06):
with some other teams like they struggled with Logan County.
Logan County's really good, but struggling with Trigg County is concerning.
Trig County only won two football games and Heart County
only won that game thirty five to thirty four. Crazy
things could have happened, Trigg County could have really been
on fire, who knows, But that doesn't quite bold well
for Heart County. Now, they did beat Hopkins County Central

(13:29):
convincingly they should have, but also didn't beat them as
much as some other teams did this year. So I
don't know what to think about Hart County. I just
don't think they're good enough to knock off murray tonight.
I think if both teams play their best Murray's clearly better.
Murray's gonna have to have a down game. Hart County
is gonna have to have their best game to get
this win, and same thing. Once Murray gets a two

(13:51):
touchdown lead, I think this game's over and I do
think Murray will win by three or four scores, just
like I said in the Mayfield game. Much more challenging
this week for Murray, but it's at Murray. Murray's offense
has just built different too much. I think for Hart
County's defense, that's the other thing. And Hart County is
just a run heavy team, and I think Murray can
q in on that and get a stop Tomorrow night.
Murray wins. Moving on Paduka Tilman for a football the

(14:16):
Blue Tornado. They get Franklin Simpson out of their own district.
Franklin Simpson the Wildcats of Franklin Simpson seven to four
on the year, fifty two yards passing per game, eight touchdowns,
five picks, three point fifteen on the ground, forty seven
rushing touchdowns. That is insane. Paduka Tilman. On the season,
they come in as a one lost team ten to one,

(14:39):
throwing the football at two to fifty seven per game,
running it at one fifty two per game, thirty three touchdowns,
sixteen interceptions, twenty four rushing touchdowns. Now, these two teams
did play in the regular season, the only two teams
outside I should say one of two games tomorrow night
where we've got to repeat matchup. Franklin Simpson lost that

(14:59):
game thirty five to fourteen at Tilman. This game is
also at Tilman. In the history of the series, Franklin
Simpson does have a win in nineteen ninety nine. Tilman
won in two thousand two to four, and then this
season in that game with Franklin Simpson, since we do
have a previous matchup. Tillman threw for two hundred and

(15:19):
seventy six yards, did not throw a touchdown through two interceptions.
That has been a little bit of a problem for
stone Crow, a little bit interception prone. They did run
the football two hundred and thirty two yards, that's good
with four rushing touchdowns. So they struggled to move the
ball in the air, and this game was close early,
but the run game got going and when it got going,
they got the scoreboard going thirty five to fourteen in

(15:42):
this game for Franklin Simpson. Their stats ended up again
coming from the run. Forty six passing yards on two
of six passing. But Tillman did a good job. This
is a team that averages three hundred plus yards rushing
per game. They were forty six carries for one to
eighty two and did not get a touchdown on the ground.
They got a touchdown in the air and a pick
six and that's how Tilman wins Tonight. Now keen on

(16:06):
the run, They're not going to pass the football, and
this will be again I think I think a three
score game for Tilman, but that's where I think things
will land in this one. Tilman wins now six A
football McCracken County a rematch with Henderson County. This is
a game they won fifty five forty two just a
few weeks ago, in fact, right before Halloween. So fifty

(16:29):
five forty two Henderson County their opponent comes in. Uh.
Not quite the powerhouse. They typically are a five and
six record on the year. They run the I'm sorry.
They throw the football at one to nineteen per game,
fourteen touchdown, seven picks. They run the football one seventy
one per game with twenty six rushing touchdowns. McCracken County,
on the other hand, a counter and contrast and compare.

(16:51):
They are a six and five team. Two thirty two
in the air, thirty eight touchdowns, nine picks, one seventy
one and a half on the ground per game, twenty
six rushing touchdowns. Here's what I think with this one.
Let's go back and look the last time these two
teams played, just a few weeks ago. In this game,
Maddix O'Neill twelve of eighteen two forty four, four touchdowns,

(17:12):
no picks. They ran the football thirty eight times for
two fifty eight and four touchdowns. Simply put, McCracken County's
offense was just way too much for Henderson County, like
just way too much. Now. Henderson County, though, scored the football.
And I told you that is what concerns me with
McCracken is that they're not concerned with playing defense. That's
just the mo on them. That ain't me saying it.

(17:33):
That's other coaches. They just don't like, they're just out
there to we're gonna outscore you. That's their players mentality.
And forty two. In that game, Henderson County scored sixty
seven in a win over Christian County, Okay, they scored
forty four and a win over Central Harden, who's terrible.

(17:53):
They scored forty two on McCracken County. So they scored
a lot of points on bad teams, but good teams
held them pretty much below thirty points. Except for McCracken.
The only team with a winning record that Henderson County
scored on was McCracken County. So again, if this becomes
that kind of game, it's gonna be a little bit,

(18:15):
a little bit insane. It's gonna be crazy. It's gonna
give Henderson a chance. The problem is you flip that
McCracken County is gonna score on Henderson County at will,
just like they did a few weeks ago. This will
be very similar. I think this is two teams that
will go out and put up a lot of points,
and this will be a very similar you know, two touchdown,
maybe three touchdown McCracken win in a high scoring game.

(18:38):
So that's six a football. So I do think all
of our teams win. I think Mayfield gets a large win.
I think Murray has a chance to get a larger
win than people expect. Tillman's gonna win by about three scores,
and I think McCracken wins by two or three scores.
But it's probably gonna be a high scoring game. So
there you go, and there's football. There's Week two of
the playoffs. We'll find out how we did on Monday.

(19:02):
But to have fun, Good luck to everybody. My first
Friday off of the football season since fall break. So
I don't know what to do with myself. But but
that's what we've got going on tomorrow. And I think
all of these games are at home, right, McCracken's at home,
Tilman's at home or reason. So yeah, you want to
go out, good weather, go see some good football. You've
got plenty of options tomorrow night, even if your team's
not playing all right, let's take another break. We'll come

(19:22):
back power players for the basketball season. We'll get into
that when we return on Region one. Sometimes it happens,
someone has to deal with it. And who are you
gonna call? Brian Yorke on ninety nine to five the fan.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
Nothing you can do, nothing, you can see, nothing you
can Throways Friday, we've been rubber stamp and beaver Cliff
and sword and filing backs and it's time left the.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Preaching. When sports our final segment here on your Friday
edition of the show. We've talked football, We've given you
an update on the show. Now we can talk basketball.
And I actually had you know, coach Dunning on My
co which is show on Wednesday night for Graves County,
and it was just it was weird, changing, you know,
paces from football to basketball. But it was exciting and
it made me get really excited for the season, really

(20:10):
excited to get back to colin basketball games and get
back to what we do here on Region one, and
that's talk high school sports. And now we get to
talk high school basketball. Gave you the power rankings on
Wednesday again. I'm not gonna revisit it today. You want
those rankings, you can go back and look at Wednesday Show,
or go back go back and listen to Wednesday Show.
What we will do is get into our power players.

(20:31):
Now we'll give you like your typical people like list.
We'll kind of do the list thing like here's the
best players in the region, you know we think will
be good. There's gonna be more than ten. There's gonna
be more than ten because there's a lot of good
players in this region, so let's get into it. We're
gonna start with the girl's side, start with the boys
on Wednesday. We'll start with the girls here on this Friday.
So again, this is in no order. These are just

(20:51):
off the top of my head. I wrote these down.
So if you want to say, you know, I'll kind
of give you who I think the player of the
year will be. I'll kind of give you who who's
gonna be in that running, but in no particular order.
We'll go to Callaway County because they're spoiler number one
in our power rankings, and they've got two players that
come to mind. Obviously, They've got Sailor Low and Jayden Coke.
I mean, I said this on Wednesday, and I mean it.

(21:13):
I think the three things that separate our top three
teams in our Power five are that Callaway has the
best duo, Marshall might have the best complete starting lineup
in Graves has the most depth, and the best duo
is Sailor Low and Jaydon Coke. And I think Sailor Low,
she plays to the level she's played the last few years,
is going to be your regional player of the year.
Coke will probably be right there with her in that running,

(21:35):
but I do think it'll be it'll end up being
Low if she averages what she did the last few years.
But you have Low and Coke, and let's look at
while I'm pulling it up here, let's go find what
they did last season is sort of the expectations for
this season. Last year, Sailor Low twenty points per game.
She also pulled down seven and a half rebounds per game.

(21:55):
Jayden Coke was sixteen points per game. She pulled down
seven boards per game. So they're on the list. Number
three for me and not again this is in no order,
just the third name I'm coming up with here. We
go to Mayfield, We go to La mays Ay. May's
was twenty points per game a year ago. In fact,
the only lady cardinal in double figures that probably will

(22:16):
stay the same this season. They do return a lot
of those players from a year ago. They got a
lot coming back, but she carries a lot of the load.
Twenty points per game, one of the most prolific scorers
and in this region. So she's on the list. Then
you go to and I'm gonna go to Marshall County,
like I said might have the best starting lineup. I'm
gonna put a couple of names on here for Marshall County.

(22:39):
I'm gonna start with Kinsley Terry. Terry comes back at
thirteen and a half points per game from a season ago,
and she'll be joined by her teammate on this list,
Addie Wall. Wall comes back one of the best bigs
in the region at ten points per game a year ago.
They'll be carrying the load for Marshall County this season.
So so far, we've got Low and Coke, We've got

(23:01):
Mays from Mayfield, and we've got Terry and Wall. What
does that give us six? Now? So we're already up
to six. We've talked essentially three teams. So then we
turn our attention some other players on the list. We
go to Graves County. They lost a lot last season,
they lost the player of the year, they lost some scoring,
they lost some production. You know who they get back
a bulldog in Ginger Martin. And if you know, you

(23:24):
know a bulldog in Ginger Martin breakout year last year
scoring wise at eleven points per game a season ago.
Here's the thing with Graves And like I said, I
think Cowway's got the best duo, Marshall the best true
starting lineup, Graves the best depth. I don't think Graves
is going to be the team that has to have
somebody go out and be Hannah Glisten or b Morgan,

(23:45):
Alexander b what those those players were, because I think
they're gonna have five, six, seven that are capable on
any night of knocking down shots in scoring points. But
Martin is going to be one of those rocks, one
of those glues. If she just repeats last season, they're
going to be fine. And she was eleven points a
game a year ago. So now we've got what six
six on our list. So then I turned my attention

(24:08):
some teams that are kind of not really in that
Power five discussion, but are gonna have players that are
gonna carry the load and get some things done. And
you look at Puduka Tilman, who returns again one of
the better scores in the region from a year ago,
and a player on this list for US is Maisha Smith.
Maysa Smith last season as a junior seventeen points per game.
She's gonna have to be that and a lot more

(24:29):
for Tilman this season. But Smith on the list. Now
we're at seven. Then I look over at Carlisle County
and I see Macy Hogan Camp returning. Hogan Camp's been
a star for them the last few seasons. She'll be
in her junior year this season. Last year thirteen point
seven a game, so fourteen points a game for Hogan.
Camp also pulled down eleven and a half rebounds per game.

(24:51):
So Hogan Camp on our list. And then Murray High
returns with two players. They've got Cadence Kendall and Mayla Smith.
Indo was seventeen points per game a season ago. Smith
at eleven points per game. So there's our list. I
look at this, I see say, I see a Sailor
Low Jayden Coke. Then we've got lay May's, We've got

(25:15):
Kinsley Terry, Addie Wall, Ginger Martin, Maisha Smith, Macy Hogan Camp,
and then Canaan's Kendall and Mayla Smith for Murray High.
Those are your power players going into the season for
Region one. Now that's not to say these are the
only players that have a good year. That's not to
say there aren't other players that might not have better seasons.

(25:35):
Top of mind, I think Marshall's got a few that
you need to watch out for. You know, the Darnell
is one that's been kind of a very good athlete
and kind of a prominent player on the rise. You
look at Graves, I listed Ginger Martin, but that doesn't
mean Ella Kemp won't have a good season, big season
and step up for them. You might not. You know,
ad Lee Vakasovic a true post player for them, Karly

(25:57):
Goatlee who is a phenomenally talented freshman. So they've got players.
So there are other players around the region you need
to keep an eye on, but these are at least
the top ten returning players from a year ago where
expectations are that they at least repeat that for their
teams to have success. So that's on the girls side.
Let's talk power players on the boys side. So again

(26:21):
you kind of do this based a little bit on
a little bit on the power file because in order
for those teams will be good, they're gonna have the
better players. Right. So you start with McCracken County and
you've got Jackson Clope returning off the knee injury. You
can't kind of, you know, you really can't look at
what happened last season. You got to look at what
he is projected to be this season. But if you
go back to his sophomore season as a sophomore, sixteen

(26:42):
points and ten rebounds per game. So that's what McCracken returns.
That's why he's a power player. That's why he's on
the list. What he's capable of. And I think he'll
do that in more for that team. But Klope is
on the list. Adding to that list with him is
Miles Woodford transferring over for Tillman. Probably ends up being
your player of the year if all goes well from

(27:03):
McCracken County. But wood Fork last season at Tilman, I
gotta go find their numbers from a year ago because
that's where he was. But last season, wood Fork a
twenty point per game score, and as I said, the
front runner for player of the year. And he's got
a big man to throw it down to. Now he
can drive, pull up that mid range float or that
mid range jumper for him as always killer, always hard

(27:24):
to defend. He can take you to the basket. Obviously
he can make threes from outside. But now you give
him a player like Clope, you give him another guy
on the wing. Like Miller My goodness, lookout, but those
two are on the list at least for now. Clope
and Woodfork from mcracken County. Then you go over to
Marshall County and of course one of the Player of
the Year candidates and Matthew Langey. Langy last season leading

(27:47):
Marshall to one of their best teams in a long time,
twenty nine to three. Langy twenty points per game a
year ago. He also pulled down five rebounds per game.
The question with Marshall is going to be who around
him is going to step up and score and take
some of the load. But he was twenty a game
last year. He can do a lot of that on
his own. This year, they're gonna need more. But Langy

(28:08):
on the list. So we got Cloak, we got Woodfork,
we got Langy. Then you look at Graves County and
a couple of players from Graves County make the list,
one of those being Tyi Cavot. Cavot again kind of
one of those players, like Woodfork. Not a great shooter
from the outside, but he can get to the rim.
Probably the best in the region at getting to the rim.
Probably the best in the region at going downhill and

(28:29):
scoring inside as a guard. But Cavot a season ago
a little bit of a step up for him. He
was thirteen points per game. Joining him on this list
is his teammate Reagan Mathis. Reagan was nine points per game.
Keep in mind, though Waller, who graduated, led that team
at sixteen a game, and Daryl Hughes, another senior, had
nine a game. So Cavot and Mathis are gonna have

(28:52):
to be big for Graves and they're while a lot
of people, myself included, think they're gonna be one of
the top three teams in the region most of the season,
and Cabot on the list, then we look over and
we see Saint Mary and we see Gryffin Mays, one
of the top underclassmen in the region a year ago.
Now all lies on him. Luke Sims gone. Luke Silms

(29:13):
was otherworldly for that team the last few years. Now
they're gonna turn, They're gonna hand the basketball to Gryffin
Mays and say, all right, go get the points. Go
do what he did, Go be the next guy. Griffin
May's thirteen points per game returning again. That was his
eighth grade campaign last season again, doesn't have the haws,
doesn't have, but he's still got a lot of talent
around him. There's gonna be more eyes on him defensively

(29:35):
than a year ago. But I think he's gonna step
up and have a phenomenal year, and that's why he's
on the list. Griffin mays. Then we look over at
one of our other Power five teams, Carlisle County. They've
got Wyat Ricord, one of the best skilled big men
in the region. Not necessarily the best post in the region,
one of the best skilled big men in the region.

(29:55):
He can step out and score, he can score inside,
he's got lenked, he can block shots, he rebound, he
can do a little bit of everything. Last season seventeen
points per game, eight and a half rebounds per game.
Whyde Ricord's certainly a power player for Carlisle County. So
that gives us seven players so far. Then we're gonna
look over at Callaway County. They lose a lot, they

(30:16):
lose a lot, but one of those top guys in
that starting lineup last year who's got regional championship experience
is underclassman Luke Armstrong. Now, again, it can be different
when you go from one of the guys to the guy.
But Luke Armstrong last year was consistently with Lockhart out
their third guide about eight points per game. That'll go up.
He's tough to guard, he's big, can play the wing,

(30:37):
can shoot from outside, can take you down low. Luke
Armstrong on the list. Then I look over across town
because they love crosstown rivalries there and I see Maddix
Mitchell and Harris Moore. So Murray getting two guys on
the list, but they're a big reason why a lot
of people, myself included, are telling you to watch out
for Murray High this season. Maddix Mitchell fourteen and a

(30:58):
half a game, Harris Moore fourteen game. Both shoot the
ball well, both can take you off the bounce, Both
good scores, and both have a little more around them
this season with coach Doss coming in, they are expecting
to have a good year. And that's a big reason why.
So you got Jackson Cloak, Miles Woodford, Matthew Langey, Ty Cavot,
Reagan Mathis, We've got Griffin Mays, We've got wyat Ricord,

(31:21):
Luke Armstrong, and then you've got Maddix Mitchell, and Harris Moore,
and those are our top ten power players. On the
boy's side, and again that's just top ten. You still
got guys like Elijah Griggett at CFS. He's been one
of the better scores in the region. You've got Ike
Miller at Ballad of Memorial. Again, this is just off

(31:41):
the top of my head. So we expect other guys
to step up and do well and have big years.
And there's names that we're not talking about that will
pop on this list that we'll go how did we
miss that? But for me, that's our power players. And
again I'll give you the list and I'll just do
last names to keep it flowing. But on the boy's side, Cloak, Woodford, Lane, Cavot, Matthis, Mays, Rickard, Armstrong, Mitchell, Moore.

(32:05):
On the girl's side, Coke, Lowe, Mays, Terry Wall, Martin Smith, Hogan, Camp,
Kimbler and Smith. And that's Kimbler and Smith from Murray High.
So there you go. Our power rankings were on Wednesday.
You've got power players on today's show. Now next week

(32:27):
things change, and here's what I mean. Your show will
come out Like I said earlier in this episode, it'll
be you know, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, just like you're used to.
I have interviews. I talked with coach DAWs at Murray
High School, new boys basketball coach. We interviewed him. I'll
have that for you next week. We talked with mister
Andrew Clinton, author of the new Region one basketball book,

(32:48):
So we'll have that interview for you next week and
promote his book more because again I think that is
the Christmas gift for people who listen to this show.
You are the target audience. If you listen to the
show and you're a basketball fan, you got to get
that book. So we'll talk to him next week and more.
We have more, but starting next week. This is my

(33:09):
last day full time in radio. So it's my last
day in the professional studio. It's my last day. So
things may get ready sound quality, It may take a
while before we figure that out. It may take a
while before we hammer that out and we get it
where we need it to be, but it will get there.
But the show will continue. And I do want to

(33:30):
say on this last day, I've had a lot of
emotions today. You know, it's the last day I'll get up.
You know, I'll actually get to sleep another hour and
a half on Monday, like I'll get an extra hour
and a half asleep. But I've had a lot of
emotions because it's been you know, these fifteen years in
full time in radio have been have been a blur,
and have been quite the journey. I started as a

(33:54):
part timer working weekend, so way back in the day
in the in the two thousand oughts, and at the
end of that decade, the way you became full time
in radio here especially, you kind of had to pay
your dues and I started part time. I started on
the weekends and I worked the midnight to eight am
shift on Friday night and Saturday night. And then what

(34:15):
would happen back then when we had like UK football
on or UK basketball, you had to have somebody in
the studio play the commercials live. So I would like
during football season, that's when I started part time. I
would work eight to or midnight to eight. I would
go home and sleep for like two three hours, and
then I would come back and work another five hours

(34:37):
running the football game, and then I would go home
and sleep again, and then I'd come back and work
midnight to eight am. Yeah, and then they put me
on the Outlaw Hours. So my first real on air
sort of being a DJ and being a jock and
being what you think of when you think of music radio.
I hosted the Outlaw Hours and I hosted that for

(35:00):
just over two years, not part time, but but at
first part time as the Outlaw Hour's host. That was
an experience that was back when it was truly truly
a live and interactive show where we took phone calls
and and played request and kind of had that interaction
with the with the audience. So I did that for

(35:20):
a while. My first full time gig came shortly after
being part time. I think within a few months, I
was being offered full time and I worked at that
point on WKYQ. I was the night time jock, so
I did seven to midnight Monday through Friday on the queue.
We had the Request Hour at nine o'clock. We had
a lot of other features we did over that time.

(35:41):
But I did that for I think three years. And
then when we created the mix, when ninety four point
seven first hit the radio, when the double Q. Remember
the Double Q, Yeah, I do finally, but when the
double Q sort of sort of went the way of
the dodoverd and we flipped it to the mix. I
took over as the afternoon guy, so I was working

(36:01):
three to seven on ninety four to seven the mix.
Around that time, we unfortunately, and this is part of
those memories that you have, we lost one of my
good buddies here at the radio station, Ron Alvi. Ron
Alvey was our program director. Ron Alvi passed of a
heart attack suddenly and unexpectedly, and after a few weeks
they offered me to be the new programmed or I'm sorry,

(36:22):
production director, I said, program production director's that's the person
who oversees the commercials, who gets the orders, gets them
to the people that need to do the commercial, and
then gets them on the radio. And then a few
years after that, after a few years, after like two
years of discussing high school sports in the building, after
two years of having a friend of the building. You

(36:44):
remember him as Chris, the guy, Chris Singler. He was
our engineer. We would have conversations almost daily about what
was going on in the sports world. Because I was
doing Graves County basketball at the time, I was the
color commentator. I started that journey in twenty fourteen. Wow,
So my first year was in twenty fourteen, the Lady
Eagles won the region that season. A couple of years later,

(37:06):
the boys the Eagles won the region. It was a
great run there for a moment as a color commentator
for Graves County. But I started that journey in twenty
fourteen and a few years, about four years after that,
I would always have these conversations in the hallway with
Chris about high school sports, and one day, all of
a sudden, he said, this should be a show two

(37:27):
people talking high school sports and only high school sports. Now.
At the time, we didn't think or necessarily wont it
to be us, but it happened we did, and so
we started the Region one Sports Report in the fall
of twenty eighteen. Uh huh, and it's been going strong
every since. No Chris since has left. In fact, in

(37:49):
twenty twenty one, the follow up to COVID, our company
was struggling, most were, and they had to restructure some things,
and so five of us were taken off a full
time status, and in that time Chris found another job.
For a moment, I found another job, and then the
great Joe Jackson decided he found another job and he left,

(38:10):
and that opened an opportunity for me to come back,
and since twenty twenty one, I essentially took over all
of Joe's jobs. I came back and did news, came
back to do mornings, and then came back to be
the play by play voice of Graves County Sports. And
here we are today, four almost five years later. Here
we are today, and it all comes to an end today,

(38:31):
which is an amazing thing to think about in hindsight.
What a ride, what a journey, How crazy to think
of the I did this, and I jocked this station,
and I started on midnights, and then here we are.
It's crazy. Fifteen years full time, sixteen years total. And
like I said, since twenty eighteen doing Region one Sports,
since twenty fourteen doing Graves County Sports. Crazy Now a

(38:56):
few of those things continue. So this is not necessarily
a good ah, but it is hello to change. And
so I hope you bear with me next week as
I make the adjustments and continue to put out Region
one Sports, but just continue to do it in a
different way. But nonetheless, enjoy your weekend, enjoy the games tonight,

(39:18):
enjoy whatever you have going on, and we'll find a
way to meet on Monday. Until then, this has been
