Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five The Fat.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Welcome man.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
This is your Monday edition to the Region one Sports Report.
I'm Brian York and as always, you can get in
touch with us here on the show, via our social
media pages or on our telephone number at two seven
five three four forty three eight. That's two seven five
to three four forty three eight. Hope you are you
had a great weekend. First and foremost, I hope you
(00:34):
are having a fantastic day to start your brand new
work week as we get to this show here on
this Monday edition of the show. Here's the deal. This
starts our new venture together. This starts our new experiment together.
Many of you may know if you listen last week,
hopefully you do know. I've changed careers. I have pivoted
(00:56):
careers and starting a new full time, daytime job this week.
So I'm having to do the Region one Sports Report
at home. And that's fine because, as I told you
last week, it was my utmost goal to keep this
show going. You hate to Shay to say it's a
little cliche to say, well this is my baby, but
it is. It's as old as my youngest child who's
(01:19):
about to turn nine. It's been in my life that long,
which is insane, and it's been in your lives that long.
And I knew as we had discussions and we had
some exit talks this week with this past week at
the radio station, they you know, the bosses, the powers
that be, said, are we going to be able to
keep reaching.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
One going on the radio?
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Are we going to be able to keep reaching one
going at all? And I told them, at this point,
it makes it more difficult to do it, no doubt
about it. It's not just as simple as me going
into work and having it a part of my daytime responsibilities.
But at this point it was as much up to
them as it probably was me. And they said they
wanted to continue, which is great, and I want to
(02:01):
continue it. But I say, welcome to our experiment, because
doing this from home is going to take quite an adjustment.
You will probably be hearing quite a bit of an
audio adjustment. It's not gonna sound as good as it
did in the past, at least not immediately now. That
may come with tom as we experiment. We work on
different microphones, and we work on different processors and we
(02:23):
work on different ways to get the quality up to par,
but at least out of the gate, at least until
we get into December. It's gonna be me recording on
my phone, because that's what I'm doing now. I'm using
the voice recorder app on an iPhone to record the show,
and then I'll run it through some processors and I'll
mix it down and edit it and try to make
it sound a little better in the post edit. But
(02:46):
as far as the raw audio goes, it's just me
and a telephone setting in my walk in closet because
it's the most damp, noise dampening room I have in
my house, and recording this show.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
That's my commitment to this.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
That's how dedicated I am, And to be honest, that
is how much I wanted to see this continue. You know,
the one question I kept getting every time I would
mention to somebody that I was changing careers and doing
something different at least during the day. Still gonna do grapes,
County Sports, Still gonna do this. But that was the
question I got asked probably the most. What happens with
(03:20):
Region one? Can we Is it gonna continue? A Number
one I would love for one day somebody to come
along and take this show from me, as in I
would love to be able to pass the torch, be
able to find somebody passionate, talented, dedicated to doing this
with the same vision that we had eight years ago,
which is, you know, basically, just be a spotlight to
(03:42):
these athletes. You're gonna add commentary, you're gonna it's a
talk show. But if I could find that person, absolutely percent,
we would pass it off at some point someday. That
day is not today, but I'm fighting to continue it.
I am continuing it, and here we are, so again
my apology, jeez on the audio quality. It will again,
it will get better in time, but everything's in experiment.
(04:05):
As we work from home, as we do things. We
have to experiment to get this done. So there's that
now on today's show. Now, I guess I should say
this first. If you're listening on the radio, hopefully it
did air today, because again I'm not at the radio
station to load it into the system.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
I'm having to trust others to do that.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
But the podcast, maybe some of you did notice it
came out a day early. It will come out a
day early. Your Monday show will come out on Sunday nights, Wednesday,
show on Tuesday nights, Friday show on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
You get the idea.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
You get the idea because I'm going to have to
record the night before to get it done. So there
we are. That's my commitment. That's how much I wanted
to see it continue. Can I keep this up forever?
Speaker 4 (04:47):
No?
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Absolutely not.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
I don't think this is something especially at a three
day a week clip. I'll be able to keep up
doing this from home because keep in mind too, a
lot of the evenings, I'll be coming home from a
Graves game, getting home at ten o'clock at night and
having to record before I go to bed and get
up and do my nine to five and then repeat
going to a great So it is going to wear
on me. It is going to become a probably an
(05:10):
inconvenient or an inconvenience.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
It will, and I will fight through and we'll find
a way, but that.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Just means it's probably my time doing it is gonna
be a little shorter lived than I intended, uh, at
least at this moment. So somebody comes along, Hey, look,
we'll do our best, but here's what this means, and
we're gonna get to all our sports coverage in a moment.
What this means is, I'm gonna need you more than ever.
I'm gonna need the listener more than ever. I gave
you the text number. Text in the info. When you're
(05:39):
at a game, when something's going on, when you think
something's noteworthy, text it in two seven oh five, three
four forty three oh eight Again two seven oh five
three four forty three oh eight. Share share the info
with us so I can get it out. You know,
it'll make things a little bit easier on me and
most of you that text in, most of you that
share you have no idea how much he easy you
(06:00):
make my life, But you're really gonna make my life
easy now, or at least easier. So share what's going
on so I can share it with the world. I'm
gonna be working to do more interviews. We've got coming
up later this week. We're gonna hear from coach Colin DAWs,
the Murray High basketball coach. That'll be on Wednesday, and
then on Friday, we'll hear from Andrew Clinton, longtime coach,
(06:20):
head coach and assistant coach in the region who put
together one of the best books that you're going to
pick up for Christmas for that basketball fan in your life.
So we'll have those interviews later this week, and that'll
be my goal, especially on the weekends, especially on Sundays,
where I'm more available to do that, we will record.
I'll record as many interviews as I can. So if
(06:41):
you're a basketball coach out there, especially as we go
into basketball season, text me, message me, hit me up
and say, hey, look, I'm available if you want to talk,
love to be on the show, and I promise we're
going to make it work because the more interviews I
can do, then it becomes so much easier because then
I don't have to dedicate my time to set down
and record forty minutes.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
You know.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Yeah, those interviews take time, but it's not me talking
for fifteen twenty minutes in the interview. It's me asking
questions in the coach talking. So it will be easier
to do more interviews. It'll be more beneficial to do
more interviews, both for me and for you the listener.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
So that's what I'm needing.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
I'm needing any information again, Text that to our number
at five three four forty three oh eight two seven
oh five three four forty three oh eight, or if
you're a coach, I'll be reaching out to several Listen,
coach Toss, he had kind of raised his hand and
I reached out to him.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
We got him on.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
I'll be reaching out to several several coaches over the
next few weeks. But don't be shy. Reach out to
me and we'll get you on the show. And just
say hey, I'd like to be on, and we'll make it.
We'll make it work, we'll get it done. So all
of that.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Will be changing.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
All of that is coming, and that is what I
need back from you, and patience and understanding as we
as we go on this new venture. Now, all right,
all of the sort of you know, groundwork here for
our new venture is is over with.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
What do we do on the show? We talk high
school sports. Today.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
We'll focus a little heavy on wrapping up coverage from
Week two of the high school football playoffs.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
We'll get into that today.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
We'll continue our basketball preview discussion. I do have a
correction to make from Friday. Many of you, and again
you use the text number. You're pointing this out, and
I said, chalk it up to things I was told
and completely forgot, but one of the players on our
preseason players list.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Isn't even in the region anymore.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
So I will give you a replacement player later and
we'll continue our discussion of top teams, top players, top
things we're watching as we go into the basketball season.
So all of that coming here on the show today.
So let's do this. Let's get to scores from Friday night.
Then we'll take a break, then we'll come back and
break it down and get into our football and basketball talk.
So scores from Friday night you had. Let's see here,
(08:51):
Let's see if I get this right. Murray High beat
Hert County forty nine to six, Mayfield over Hancock County
fifty five, na Nothing, Zilch Paduka, Tilman over Franklin Simpson
forty nine to fourteen, and Henderson County upsetting McCracken County
forty one thirty four. And that'll lead our discussion when
we come back in the second segment, we'll take a break.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
We'll be back with that coming up on.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
Region one, the Region one Sports Report on all major
podcast platforms, and ninety nine to five The Fan.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Moving Along here on your radio.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Monday edition of the show officially your November seventeenth edition
of the show. So if you did get the podcast
on your Sunday night and you started listening to it, hey,
that's the benefit of being a podcast subscriber. Brian York
Here as always the Region one Sports Report. Let's talk
high school football. Let's get into our playoff talk Week
two of the high school football playoffs and everything kind
(09:52):
of win as chalk. We'll get into that more in
a moment, But there was an upset as Henderson County
beat McCracken County forty one thirty four. Now, remember this
was a game that McCracken County won by a couple
of scores on the road at the end of the
regular season. They come back, They're at McCracken County week
two of the playoffs, and the Mustangs fall. Now this
(10:13):
is from a little bit of our ride up on
West Kentucky Star dot Com. Then I'll kind of get
into more of the game breakdown in stats here in
a moment, but it says the Mustangs fell victim to
a team they defeated just three weeks ago in the
regular season. The Colonels converted three interceptions into twenty points,
including Henderson Counties go ahead touchdown. The Mustangs stalled on
two first half drives that allowed the Colonels to tie
(10:34):
the score on the next possession. Mccrackens lost to their
district arch rival, gives the Mustangs a six and six
record to conclude the season. Well, you heard it there
in the beginning of that ride up, the Mustangs fell victim.
It was three interceptions leading to three touchdowns. That was
the difference in the football game. And I've told you
this before, and it's not always the pick six is not.
(10:55):
McCracken County's biggest worry going into the playoffs was their
defense wasn't necess certainly gonna win them a football game.
In fact, no, let me rephrase that, their defense was
not gonna win them a football game. It might stop
some teams, stall some teams, help win some drives, but
it wasn't gonna be the reason they won games.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
Their offense was.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
And then here their offense ends up being part of
the reason why they give up touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
And it was just too much to overcome in this
football game.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Let's look at some of the sort of quarterback quarter
things like that. So how did the game flow? Well,
McCracken County scored early first quarter ten oh seven. Right
out of the gate, Maddox O'Neill found Jakari Matchham for
a sixteen yard touchdown. Seven nothing, Mustangs. So that's exactly
what we sort of expected. We expected McCracken County to
(11:43):
move the football. I mean, they did score fifty five
points on Henderson County three weeks ago, so seven nothing
and then here comes Henderson County because again we sort
of expected Henderson Henderson County to move the football because
most teams have. It was a twenty six yard run
for the Colonels ties of the game. At seven six
fifty left in the first quarter. McCracken County comes right
back Mannix O'Neill an eight yard run for the touchdown
(12:05):
with one fifty six remaining in the first quarter, fourteen
to seven, McCracken County beating Henderson County.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Then right out of the gate within.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
The first minute of the second quarter, it was an
interception deep in their own territory and then Jack Dalton
ran it in from one yard out to tie the
game fourteen to fourteen. So the first interception that led
to a score. McCracken's up fourteen to seven, they throw
the interception. Now it becomes fourteen to fourteen. Then McCracken
County does get another score. Mattix O'Neil twenty one yard run,
(12:36):
seven fifty two left in the second quarter. Twenty to
fourteen is your score at that point. Then one thirty left,
Mustangs intercepted deep in Henderson territory. The Colonel's march the
other way, thirty five yard touchdown by Baxter and we're
tied at twenty. So again McCracken County every opportunity with
the lead with the football. And I told you this
(12:57):
on on Friday. Eventially, once McCracken County got a two
score lead, they would win the football game. They never
got a two score lead in the first half. They
got a one score lead, they turned the football, had
an opportunity deep in Henderson territory twice through interceptions that
led to Henderson County scores.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
So that's definitely not how McCracken.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Needed the football game to go. They did go up
twenty seven to twenty at the half. With twenty one
point two seconds left in the quarter, Jacari Matcham with
a full extension nineteen yard touchdown catch to give the
Mustangs a seven point halftime lead. Unofficially, at the half,
McCracken County had outgained Henderson County two hundred and eighty
nine yards to one pint eighty one forty five in
(13:39):
the year to Henderson's forty seven one forty four on
the ground to Henderson's won thirty three. However, points off turnovers,
Henderson County thirteen, McCracken County six, and it's a one
score McCracken County lead at the half. Remember McCracken County
could go up two scores.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
They're gonna win.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
The football game started the third quarter twenty seven to
twenty is your score 'racken County on top. But then
seven to twenty five left in the quarter, a twenty
one yard touchdown run for the Colonels ties the game
twenty seven each. Henderson would take their first lead to
the football game. Another McCracken interception and then a Dalton
(14:15):
one yard run. Henderson County with twenty points again off
of three McCracken interceptions. Six point eighteen left in the
third quarter, so McCracken is up by seven. Henderson drives
the football scores it ties the game. McCracken back on
the march. The way the game has flowed at least
until this point is McCracken had not turned the football over. Tied,
(14:36):
they had at least had a lead, so their marching
to get another lead. This time, though, a turnover ends
up leading to a Henderson County score. Henderson takes their
first lead with six to eighteen left in the third quarter.
Then McCracken County does come back in tie reed Brookshire
a sixteen yard touchdown. With four and a half to
play in the third quarter, we're tied at thirty four. Henderson, though,
(14:57):
with twenty eight seconds left in the quarter, ends up
a set seventeen yard run. They're up forty one to
thirty four, and that ends up being your final. Oh,
by the way, those in the fourth quarter and I
say third quarter. Yeah, So in the third quarter McCracken
County came back and tied at thirty four each and
then they go scoreless all the way until twenty eight
seconds left in the fourth quarter, in which Henderson County
(15:17):
wins forty one to thirty four. So that's your game flow.
That's how things played out. Let's look at stats for
this one. Final stats for McCracken County Mannix O'Neil fourteen
of thirty one, three touchdowns, three picks, two to oh nine.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
A tough way to go out. It's just tough.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Landon Newman, the senior running back, nineteen carries ninety six yards. O'Neil, though,
twelve carries thirty three yards. He had both rushing touchdowns.
As a team, they were thirty five carries, won forty
nine to two touchdowns on the ground Jakarie match and
by the way, six catches one oh nine to two touchdowns.
That kid's a sophomore. He's special. He's gonna be so
good next year, so good as he gets more experience.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Sales.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
McCracken County's final SATs Henderson County in this game. The
final stats hold on waiting for my iPad to load here,
and like I said, everything's different, No more thousand tabs open.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
I'm just opening different apps on the iPad.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
So you had in this one, McCracken or I'm sorry,
Henderson County fifty rushes on the ground, two hundred and
forty six total yards, five rushing touchdowns. Brody Belt, their quarterback,
did go six of twelve one touchdown, one pick.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Ninety eight yards.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
They only had two receivers even catch the football, six
receptions between two guys.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
Again, that's what Hiderson County does.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
They line up, they run it, they run counters, they
run off tackle, they run between the tackles.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
They try to throw wrinkles at you all game long.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Fifty carries, two forty six, five touchdowns, but in the
end it does come down.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
This is just reality.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
I'm not picking, poking or trying to point out, you
know things, but this is just reality. McCracken's defense was
never going to be the reason why they won a
playoff game. Their offense was. And when the offense doesn't
quite deliver, then they're in for a game like that.
And that's that's tough because the three inner options led
to three scores, and that's the difference of the football game.
(17:03):
You know, it's gonna happen, you're gonna throw a pick.
It's gonna happen. You're gonna throw maybe two, but man,
you can't in the playoffs. The third one was the killer.
The third one was the difference, and that ends up
being the difference because again McCracken wasn't gonna necessarily stop
Henderson County from scoring, but they needed to be able
to complete drives themselves. They needed to be able to
continue to sustain on offense, and had they again, I
(17:25):
think they win this game by two touchdowns, but a
couple of things turning the football over and like I
said on Friday, once they got two scores or got
up by two scores, they'd win and Henderson just never
allowed it. Credit to them, credit to their defense, credit
to their offense for capitalizing and winning the football game.
And McCracken County season, as we said, comes to an
(17:46):
end at six and six. A lot coming back back
though for McCracken, a lot that you should be excited about.
You do lose O'Neill, but you've got a good freshman
quarterback in Presswood, so I know they're excited about him.
Your top receivers are all sophomores. They are gonna lose,
you know, let's see, they're running back.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
They're gonna lose Newman.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
They're gonna lose you know, Dawson Hayden, who ended up
being second on the team in rushing. O'Neil ended up
being third on the team in rushing. So they're gonna
have to find somebody to run the football. But they've
got two good receivers and they got somebody that can
throw it to them. So you expect them to come
back next year and start that process again of being
exactly where they probably ended up this year. You know,
probably gonna be fighting to get over five hundred most
(18:31):
of the year. Next year, probably will end up there
somewhere around six seven wins and a shot to go
three weeks into the playoffs. That's six a football and
that's McCracken County in their path almost every year though,
So McCracken season comes to an end. Other teams they
their season continued, including Paduca Tillman, who beat Franklin Simpson
(18:51):
forty nine to fourteen all Tilman early. You know, this
was a game a few weeks ago, or not a
few weeks ago. They played earlier in the year. It
was the first district game of the year, and Franklin
Simpson was the second best team in the district and
it was a thirty five to fourteen Tilman win. This time,
their offense, playing much better defense kind of gave up
the fourteen as they did the previous time. You look
(19:12):
at the stats in this one. It was kind of
easy stone Crow nine of twelve, three touchdowns, no picks,
one sixty eight. It's kind of easy.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
As a team.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
They were in the football twelve times, eighty four yards
and a touchdown. They did have two pick sixes. Blair
says a senior. Remember he was putting up numbers last
year at Ballard, the senior on defense. Blair saints two picks,
two touchdowns to go with their four offensive touchdowns, sorry,
their five offensive touchdowns. Tilman wins this game forty nine
(19:45):
to fourteen. Tilman moves on, they get Logan County. They
were sort of the you know, I said Franklin Simpson
was the second best team in the district. That's a
lie Logan County was. This one was a ball game
at Tilman just a few weeks ago, back on October third,
thirty five to twenty seven was the final In that game,
Logan County made it a ballgame. I think you gotta
(20:05):
be a little worried. If you're Tillman. You're excited you
get to host this game. But I would be just
just a little worried back when that game was played.
And we'll break this down more as the week goes on,
But hey, I got Tom and nothing else to do
right now. Back when this game went on, it was
I mean, they put up two hundred and forty one
yards passing and two to eleven on the ground. They
scored five total touchdowns. But Logan County just found a way.
(20:28):
Logan County is good. They only lost two games of
the regular season. They lost to South Warren, who's really good,
and lost to Tilman by one score. At Tilman they
can play defense. They're good on that side of the football.
So we'll see how this goes. You gotta feel Tillman
still a still at least a ten point favorite. I
would think, well, we'll see. We'll talk about that more
(20:49):
as the week goes on. Other teams that won Mayfield
had no problem with Hancock County don't have stats for them.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
That's okay. At Sunday night, I'm not going to knock
them on that.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
But they knock off Hancock County, they get win fifty
five nothing, they get Lexington Christian on the road in
the third round of the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
I know.
Speaker 3 (21:07):
See that RPI and the way things went this year.
Even though Mayfield ended up with just one loss, their
RPI just not as good as some other teams Lexington
Christian for example, three losses on the year, but had
the higher RPI and they get to host. This is
gonna be a tough one for the Cardinals. Christian coming
off a fifty one to twenty one win over Monroe
(21:31):
County on Friday night. Now, remember these two teams played
last year I believe at Mayfield, and Christian won that
game handily, forty seven to seven the final in that
game almost one year ago to the date. So can
Mayfield return the favor? Can they go on the road
and get it done? That is gonna be a tall,
(21:52):
tall task. Now, I will say one thing, I was
surprised and disappointed at the crowd size at Mayfield on
Friday night. I watched online. I was surprised that was
their first playoff game of the season because they had
the bye week in Week one. It was great weather
and just didn't feel like there were that many people there,
at least as many as you would expect. Well, they're
(22:12):
gonna need somewhat of a crowd to follow them up
to lexand Christian because that is gonna be a tall order. Now,
Christian last season again they won that game pretty handily.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Yes, that game was at Mayfield.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
They had two losses last season going into that game,
three losses this year. I'm trying to look at their
stats and see if we can at least get a
little comparison here. Let's see their quarterback last year with
Saxon Howard. Their top runner last year was Leland Edwards.
Are those guys back for them? Let me go see
if I can find that real quick. Gotta love this
doing this in real time. But no new quarterback, new
(22:47):
running back. Now the numbers this season. Nash Wheelan is
their quarterback. He put up one sixty four per game,
twenty three touchdowns, four picks. As a team, they ran
the football, won fifty per game. Their top runner about
seven hundred and ninety yards on the season.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
But again, you look at who they play.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
They beat Danville, they beat you know, PRP handily. They
did beatle Lexington Catholic. All right, that's something, right, that's
that's something. They beat Catholic. Their losses came to Bull County,
who's really good, cal who's phenomenal, and Franklin County, who's
pretty I mean, like again, they've played a tough schedule. Obviously,
(23:26):
there arepis higher than Mayfield, and they got two more losses,
so tall order will break it down more. We'll talk
about it as the week goes on. But Mayfield big
win over Hancock County fifty five. Nothing to at least
get to this game. What else we got is that hit?
Speaker 2 (23:40):
I think that's it.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Murray, ah Man, Murray, sorry almost forgot you forty nine
to six, the win over at Hart County. Let's take
a look at Murray here if I can get them
pulled up, bear with me, there, it is all right.
Let's take a look at their numbers from this game.
Wyatt Robbins twelve of fourteen, three touchdow did have one
pick man two incomplete passes. He threw one to the
(24:03):
wrong team. Actually, I'm actually very surprised by that man.
He has been so good all year, but twelve or
fourteen about as good as it gets. Three touchdowns, two
sixty They ran the football twenty times as a team,
one point fifty two on the ground, four.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
Additional rushing touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
And by the way, Isaiah Martin three get the I mean,
come on, three catches, three touchdowns, one forty seven.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
How's that even real? How's that I can't do that
on a video game.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
I'm not very good at the video games, but I
can't do it on a video How is that real?
Three catches, three touchdowns, one forty seven that I don't
even know how that's that's possible other than he's that special.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
He's that good boy.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
If you're white, Robin's like, you know, I was watching
the Ohio State game because I'm a big Buckeyes fan,
and they pulled they didn't have Carnell Tait, he was out.
They pulled Smith after the first half because of the lead,
and then Julian saying, and I'm a big fan of his,
but he struggled. Throw in to guys who aren't super human.
If you're why Robins, you just life's just easy for
you when you've got Isaiah Martin out there and Robbins
(25:08):
is good. I'm not saying that that would be a
big downgrade if he didn't have Martin, but man, heaven Martin,
who just goes and gets three catches for all three
of your passing touchdowns? Who does one forty seven of
your total two sixty? Come on, it's unbelievable. Murray Wins,
by the way, who do they get coming up. They
host Lexington Catholic. Oh man, it's gonna be a battle.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
You know what.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
You know what, Murray, I'm gonna come to that game.
I'm coming. I'm coming to that game. Can does my
press pass still get me in? I'm still a member
of the Medium. I gonna get in on my press
pass because look, I'll pay to get in if I
had to. That's how much I want to see this game.
But I'm coming to cover that game. Oh yeah, I am.
It's gonna be a long day. I gotta go to
my son's basketball game. But as soon as that's over,
(25:50):
I'm headed to Murray. I'm gonna comes catch that game.
The Knights of Lexington, Uh Catholic. Yeah, I almost said Christian.
Got that on my brain. It's the Protestants of the Catholics,
the Knights of Lexington Catholic. They lost too Christians by
one score. They lost to Ballard. That's not Memorial, that's
Louisville nineteen to six. They'd be a lot of good
(26:12):
teams over in that part of the state District four
and they're coming down and again you look at what
they have done this season. Not a heavy passing team,
ninety six yards per game, fifteen touchdowns, five picks. They
don't run the football. I mean, their numbers don't pop,
but we know they're good. That's gonna be fun on
Friday night for Murray. We'll break it down later in
the week. But Murray, Mayfield, Tillman, move on. I'm just
(26:36):
gonna admit right now, right here, we might only get
one team after this week.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
We might.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
I think it's more likely we only get one than
all three win. And I think it's you know, if
you land somewhere within the middle. If two of them win,
wouldn't be surprised. But I think it's more likely one
than a three game than a three team sweep. We'll
talk about it as the week goes on. Let's take
a break, we'll come back. We'll talk basketball on the
other side. This is Region.
Speaker 1 (27:05):
One, Kentucky's first region for a reason. Region one Sports,
where I.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
Come from is in all that great loutomobiles and BISA
crowd lassian sense. It's a little working Aventa justice screwage
on sports.
Speaker 3 (27:34):
Our final segment here on this I guess Monday edition
of the show. All right, we talked football, We talked football,
We lay the groundwork for what why this may sound different.
It probably does sound like I'm talking on a phone,
and again I apologize. We will get better at that.
I do have USB mics, they don't sound any better.
So we're gonna work on finding a small little mixer
to plug in USB mixer so I can plug the
(27:55):
mic into that and and maybe it'll all sound a
lot better. But nonetheless, this is our new venture for
a little while.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
So we talked football. We were gonna talk some basketball.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
I got a correction to make, so on Friday's edition
of the show, we went over our power players. I'm
not going to revisit that. Now you can go back
and listen to Friday show. But one of the players
we listed on the girls side is no longer with
us on the girls side, she transferred. I knew that
I had been told that, but in this course of
like one thousand and one things on my brain, it's
something I did not have on my brain. So I
(28:26):
said that Keene's Kendall was one of our power players.
She is not in the region anymore, so I got
to replace her, and I'm going to replace her with
a player from Ballard Memorial. And that player for me
is gonna be Gracy Beer. Last season as a sophomore,
led the team in scoring at nine points per game.
I know Ballard had a bit of a letdown season
(28:46):
or come down season compared to the magical regional tournament
run from a year ago, but she's one of their
best returning players. In fact, Ballard, they're upside this season
a lot better. It looks like they could be in
for a much better season. They did lose a few seniors,
but they get a lot of scoring back and a
lot of talent back. So I'll replace Kendall with Gracy
(29:07):
Beer from Baler Memorial. So that's my correction. So there
you go, and again add that name to our list
from last week, and again go back and listen to
that list from last week. Now, one of the things
we didn't do on the show last week is I
kind of told you who I thought.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Would be in the running or might get Player of
the Year. Things like that.
Speaker 3 (29:24):
We didn't talk about that specifically. We didn't talk on
Wednesday show about all these different teams and the Power
five teams, which again is on last Wednesday show, And
we didn't talk about like who the Coach of the
Year might be and things like that. Let's do a
little bit of that today. Let's do a little bit
of wild speculating today. Let's start with a player of
the year. For me, I think there's a I think
(29:45):
you could go back and listen to Friday Show and
take any of those ten and make.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
An argument for them. You know, you're gonna have.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
Things like who's the best player in the region, who's
the MVP, who's the most important. I think those are
all gonna be different players. But if you're talking player
of the year on the boys side, I think it's
gonna come down to an underclassman still in Matthew Lange
at Marshall County, and then two seniors over at McCracken County.
You've got Klope and Woodfork, and I think those are
(30:12):
sort of the three guys that'll be dominating that conversation
all year. And I think in my preseason sort of
player of the Year on the boy's side is gonna
be Miles Woodford, with what he did at Tillman a
year before, if he can go in and he's got
more round him this year at McCracken, he's got a
big to throw it too. He's got Miller, another shooter
out there. He's got a lot of good seniors and
a lot of talent on that team, a lot of
(30:32):
depth on that team. He doesn't have to go do
it by himself. He can kind of let the game
come to him. And if he does, he's still going
to score fifteen to twenty. He might not score twenty
or twenty five a game. He doesn't have to, that's
the thing. He won't have to, but he'll still be
fifteen to twenty and he'll be a hard matchup in
somebody that's hard to guard. And I think for all
those reasons, for me, he's my preseason Player of the Year.
(30:56):
I think after that it's gonna be a debate. I
think you could put a lot of guys in that category.
As I said, but you're probably looking at a Jackson Clobe.
You're probably looking at a Matthew Langy has sort of
being the guys pushing him the most for that for
that honor.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
So on the boys side, I would go, I would
go Woodwork.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
And then again, what makes mccrack and McCracken this year
is there's got so many weapons, but when the game's
on the line, he's gonna be taking the shot, and
that's a player of the year on the girl's side.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
I think it's gonna be one of the two. At Callaway.
Speaker 3 (31:26):
It's gonna come down to one of those two. Now,
there are good players outside of Callaway that'll be pushing them.
You've got Kinsley Terry and Addy wall Over at to Marshall,
Ginger Martin over at Graves, probably a few more at
Graves that can step up and do some things. But
you've got some players that'll be pushing them. But I
think it's gonna come down between, at least for my money,
(31:46):
it's gonna come down between the two at Callaway County.
It's gonna come down between, you know, Coke and Low.
And if you look at these two returning players from
a year ago, Sailor Low, you know both are D
one players. Sailor Low last season twenty points per game,
led the team with seven and a half rebounds per game,
but Jayden Coke was sixteen per game with seven boards
per game. So who's it gonna be? I think I
(32:11):
think if she stays healthy, it'll be Sailor Low. And
that's not a knock on Jayden Coke. If you could
kind of give a co Player of the Year award
that this would be the year to do it, probably
because they're both gonna score nearly twenty a game, they're
both gonna lead their team in rebounds, and they're both
gonna be a massive reason why Callaway is going to
(32:32):
be the favorite from start to finish. But it's I
think it's gonna be Sailor Low because she is a
matchup nightmare in a lot more ways. Can take you
in the post, can shoot outside, can take it off
the bounce, can get the rebound and put back, alters
the game defensively blocking shots. But it will be fun
to see how these two players go back and forth
all year because I don't know if in the end
(32:53):
there'll be a wrong answer to that. But if you're
just basing it on the last couple of years, if
you're just basing it on their high school body of word,
so far, for me, it'll go low with Coke coming
in second.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
Again.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
Just go ahead and give them the Co Players of
the Year award because they're gonna be a massive reason
for Callaway being where they are.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
So that's on the girls side.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
That's on the girls side, So those are sort of
that's sort of off the top of my head, kind
of the preseason Player of the Year nominees and award,
Coaches of the Year, Teams of the Year, like, that's
still the fascinating part to me. I you know, again,
if you look at the boys side, I think McCracken
is one.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
A all right, let me let me say this.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
I think McCracken is number one, and there's a gap
and then I think you've got three teams kind of
in that two lines. So if we're talking in tiers,
and we didn't do this last week, we're talking in tears,
I think you go McCracken in tier one, and then
in tier two you would put Marshall, Graves, Carlisle, Like I,
you know, I don't know. Actually, you know what, I'll
(33:57):
reset that. I think you go McCracken tier one. I
think Tier two is Marshall and Graves, and then tier
three I would have Carlisle, Murray, Saint Mary, maybe Puducuad Tillman.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
They're just such an unknown.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Maybe that'd be tier three, and then there would kind
of be I think I think there is a fourth tier.
I think your Callaway's, your Mayfield's you know, kind of
fall into that next tier do I say, Saint Mary,
let me, let me, let me reset in my mind here,
Tier one would be McCracken, Tier two would be Marshall Graves,
Tier three would be Carlile Murray, Saint Mary. Yeah, and
(34:29):
then tier four I'll do Tillman because they're just an unknown.
So if Tier four I do Tillman, Callaway and uh
and Mayfield, Yeah, I like that.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
I like where that's at. That'd be on the boys side.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
On the girl's side, I think Tier one, I think
is Callaway, and at least to start the season, I'd
go Tier two Marshall Graves, and then tier and I'd
put Mayfield in that. Why not, Yeah, let's do that.
So Tier one I go Calloway, Tier two, I go Marshall, Graves, Mayfield,
and then tier three would kind of be the field
at that point. And here's my point, way more parody.
(35:02):
On the boy's side, I think once you get past McCracken,
maybe you would kind of still separate Graves Marshall there
a little bit ahead of some others. But Man two
through seven is really jumbled up, really close. Those gaps
are really small. If there's gaps at all. Then on
the girls side, I think it's I think those three
teams at the top, I think there's a little gap
(35:23):
between Callaway and the other two at least to start
the year. And then I think there's a big gap
between our top four teams in the rest of the field,
big gap, And I think you'll see that play out
this year. So if you're looking at like, how's the
season gonna go, how are things gonna play out?
Speaker 2 (35:39):
I think you'll see the parody.
Speaker 3 (35:40):
On the boy's side, I think you'll see some teams
win in December that won't get those wins in February
when other teams kind of you know, their young guys
come up to you know, up to speed a little
bit more. But I think on the girls side, from
day one, you're gonna see Calloway be the best team.
You're gonna see Marshall, Graves Mayfield be right there behind
them and chasing them. And then I think you're gonna
see and I think that's gonna stay true all season.
(36:05):
So that's what I'm looking at. What am I looking
forward to? Just that I think any given night in
this region, on the boy's side, you're gonna see some
really fun basketball.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
I think you are. I just gave you those teams.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
I think one through nine in this region on the
boy's side, you're gonna see good basketball any of those
teams match up. Then when you get those big doubleheaders,
when you get the mccrackens and Marshalls, when you get
the Graves and Marshalls or Graves and mccrackens or whatever,
I think you're gonna see a lot of fun basketball.
But I think that's how it'll go. And oh, by
the way, again i'm thinking out loud. I left McCracken
(36:37):
off on the girls side. They were our fifth team.
So all right, let's redo that tier callaway is who
everybody's chasing.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Tier one.
Speaker 3 (36:46):
Then I'd go Marshall, Graves, Mayfield, Tier two, I'd go
Tier three, McCracken kind of on an island there for
a moment.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Then I'd go to the field.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
See when you knew this show from home, when you're
kind of thinking out loud, those are the you're having.
So it is what I'm staring at at my clothes.
I mean, that's that's how I'm doing the show now.
I'm just staring at my clothes. Nonetheless, that's what I'm
looking forward to at least the most at least right
now as we go into the season. So I think
(37:17):
you're gonna get parody on the boy's side. I think
on the girl's side, you're gonna get some separation. I
think those top five teams will play each other close
and then I think they'll they'll run away from the
rest of the field this year. I just think that's
just kind of how it's been and how it will
be again this season. As far as who your real
contenders are again, you know, one through nine on the
boy's side are good, but I really think it'll be
(37:39):
you know, everybody's chasing McCracken, and then two through seven
will kind of be fighting to see if just anyone
can take them down. But I really think it's that
next five, maybe six teams in the region that can
even say they have a shot. On the girls side,
I just think it's those top three teams and it
you know, I said this last week, it depends on
(38:00):
what you favor. Callaway's got the best duo in the region.
They need a tertiary scorer. I think it'll be Emery.
I think it's a lot to put on Haines I
know she's transferring in for Murray and she did some
great things at Murray a year ago. But I think
that is a lot to put on her as an
eighth grader to say you have to be the third
best player on this team in order for us to
win the region.
Speaker 2 (38:20):
It's a lot.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
Not a lot of eighth graders on the girl's side
have been able to come along and do that. Not
saying she can't, just say that's just a lot to ask.
But I like the you know, the dynamic duo of Callaway.
They've got the best two players in the region. The
best starting lineup in the region I think right now
is Marshall as far as one through five being good
and being a threat. And then the most depth in
(38:42):
the region is Graves County. They can go eight to
nine deep and not lose a lot. Now, the question
is going to be do they have enough at the
top right? You know, I think they're a team that
they'll have six seven girls lead them in scoring this
season at different points. But will they be able to
like who's going to take the shot at the end
of the game, right, Like, who's who's that player that
(39:02):
that that poses that big threat when you get into
a tournament game, that'll be something they have to work on.
Marshall's kind of got that. I think you've got that
with Terry probably the most. And then wall Is always
a threat. And then of course Callaway for sure has that.
So that's sort of how the girl's side breaks down.
And then again you got to ask that on the
boy's side, you know, mccrack and what makes them the favorite? Yeah,
(39:23):
Woodfork's the guy will have the ball in his hand,
but will he always be the guy taking the shot.
You got Cloak that can get things at the rim.
You've got Miller that can get things on the jump shot,
you know, drive and kick to him. So they've got
they've got more answers in that category than say a
Graves or a Marshall. You know, Graves Ty Cavots as
good as anybody, if not the best in the region
at getting downhill and getting to the basket. You got
(39:45):
Mathis and you've got other you know, got the Cascivic.
But not having a Waller this season is gonna be
hurtful for them. Not having you know, Woodward who's out
this season with an injury, is gonna hurt for them
a little bit with more size that could have added.
With Marshall, You've got right, we know that answer was
he got around him. That's still what we're looking at,
you know. And then you've got Saint Mary. They're going
(40:07):
to be young but talented. Then you've got Murray who's
got new energy. We'll talk to coach Dass on Wednesday.
But they've got some dudes that can take shots at
the end of the game. They got some guys that
can get it done. So you know, I think there's
more answers on the boy's side than the girl's side.
And that's why I think it's more parody and more depth.
But that's what we're looking forward to as we get
into basketball season. That's what we're looking forward to today.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
I'm out of time, I'm out of topic, and I'm
tired of looking at my clothes. Remember, as I said,
more vital, I need your help. When you see things,
no things are one of correct things. Don't be afraid
to text it in two seven oh five, three four
forty three oh eight let me know so we can
get it out there and get it covered with this
new way that we're having to do the show. All Right,
(40:48):
until Wednesday's episode, which for the podcast will come out
Tuesday night. Until then, hope you've enjoyed, enjoy your day,
and this has been Region one Sports
