Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five the fair.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Welcome in.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
This is your Wednesday, November nineteenth edition of.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
The Region one Sports Report. I'm Brian Yorke.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
As always, you can get in touch with us via
the text line at two seven oh five three four
forty three oh eight. That's two seven oh five three
four forty three oh eight. How are you on this Wednesday?
Hopefully doing well? Hopefully we sound well now. I was
told that even though we did Monday show via the
(00:42):
the recording app on my cell phone that it it
was fine. It sounded sounded okay. Listen, Okay, it's not
good enough, though. We're gonna upgrade. We're gonna get some equipment.
We're gonna make it sound professional grade once again. But
it's gonna take time. It's gonna take time, probably take
the holiday season. So bear with us as we kind
(01:03):
of get into this new way of doing the show again,
as I do the show from home late at night
on a Tuesday night, late at night on a Thursday night,
and then late at night on a Sunday night. So
it's an adjustment for all of us, but we'll get there.
I promise we'll get there. I didn't realize, just full disclosure,
how much more work it would be doing the show
(01:25):
from home. I didn't realize how much more editing and
how much slower that process would be, saving it to
the system, saving it to the cloud, getting it where
it needs to go so they can get it on
the radio. We had a ton of issues Sunday night
with that, and we had issues getting it on the
radio on Monday.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
My apologies again the.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Little growing pains that we're gonna go through to keep
the show going. But that, as I said on Monday show,
if you got to hear it, if you listen to
the podcast, and most of you do as I said,
then it's gonna be growing pains.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
But those growing pains are worth it to me to
keep this going.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
It was so vital to make sure we kept reaching
one going for a lot of reasons. Now, I hope
one day, probably sooner than later, probably not too far
off in the future, we're gonna find somebody who's got
more time, more availability, and a lot of passion and
talent to do this, and they can slide into this
(02:22):
seat and they can take it over at some point
and we can keep it going for another eight or ten.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Years, because that's reality, you know.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
One of the things I realized Sunday night, doing this
show from home and doing trying this new way, and
with my schedule, with everything going on, I won't be
able to do this for another eight years. I just
won't be able to. Life for me is just too
busy right now, the job that I have. Now they're
talking about flying me into corporate in January to do
(02:51):
some like in house training there and kind of really
get to know the ropes of the corporation I work for.
And so that'll be a week where you won't have shows.
That'll be like, so there's so many things, and maybe not,
maybe I'll do the shows from a hotel room in Youngstown,
Ohio in January. But it's just life just starts getting
busier and life starts to pull you in different directions.
(03:14):
And so I hope again, I hope the show continues
for another eight years, another eighteen years, another twenty eight years.
It's just gonna eventually continue without me. I recognize that.
But until that day comes, this is our arrangement, this
is how we do it, this is who we are,
and I appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
I appreciate all of you. I had several reach out.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
To me Monday midday Monday to tell me, hey, things
sounded great, don't worry about it, do what you gotta do,
keep it going. Just glad it's going. And I appreciate
you more than you realize.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
So thank you for that.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Thank you for staying loyal, Thank you for continuing to
listen and giving me a reason to keep doing it.
Listen if the audience dies down, if we lose numbers.
You know, one of the things that has made me
the proudest doing this show in the last eight years
is every single season, you can't really compare basketball audience
(04:06):
to football audience. You can't really compare baseball audience to
basketball audience. But you can compare this year's football audience
to last year's. You can compare this year's basketball downloads
to last year's. And every single year that we've had
this show, every year our numbers have grown almost twice
(04:28):
as much as the year before. Now you start to
get to a point where you can't keep expounding twice
as many. But the first two years we had a
big explosion in listenership compared to the previous year and
we have grown steadily, but we have grown our audience
year over year from the previous season for that next season.
So I've been super proud of that. If that starts
(04:51):
to fall off, and I kind of expect maybe it
might a little just because of how we're doing it now,
and I don't know, maybe maybe not. But as long
as that doesn't really fall off, as long as we
don't go the other direction, yeah, I'm gonna keep staying
up late on Tuesday nights. I'm gonna keep putting in
the work and I'm gonna keep delivering the show because
that's the motivation. That's the fuel to the fire, if
(05:13):
you will. So thank you for that, because so far
the response has been well worth the effort, and I
do appreciate that it does not go unnoticed.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Now, with that said, what do we do on this show?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
We talk high school sports. We've got basketball coverage to
get into today. We're gonna be hearing from coach Colin Oss.
Murray High coach Colin Das joined me last week for
an interview.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
I've got that for you today.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Full disclosure, there is just no way on the phone
when we do a phone interview for it to sound
like it's not on the phone. There's just no way
for that to work. The tool that we use, the
app that we use, it's an app through the radio station,
so there's just no way. In fact, he sounds better
on his phone than I sound on mine. For whatever reason,
(06:01):
it makes me sound like I'm in.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
A tunnel, So I will apologize for that.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
You might have to turn your radio up a little
bit louder, your your speakers up a little bit louder
when that interview comes on. But we do have that interview,
and it's a fantastic interview. Great insert into the youngest
high school coach in the region. I can't say he's
for sure the youngest in the state, but at twenty
three years old, I would be surprised to find somebody younger.
(06:26):
He's already been a college coach. He's already been like
he's kind of had a lifetime of coaching in just
the last three years, in the first three years of
his career. So we've got that interview coming up. He'll
talk to you about that. He'll give you insert into
his coaching style into the program. Why he thinks Murray
is going to bounce back this year, why they are
a threat and a team to beat and a team
(06:47):
to watch, And then again kind of about his career
in the road that he has taken since graduating from
Saint Mary a few years ago, just a few years
ago to be in the head high school basketball coach
at Murray High at twenty three years old. So you'll
hear from him in that interview later on in the episode.
Between now and then, we'll talk a little football. We'll
(07:07):
get ready for Friday nights games. I got some thoughts.
We'll get to those. We'll break down some numbers here
in a moment, and then one big and before I
close up this segment, one big final omission. Look, I've
got no excuses. Losers make excuses. I tell my kids
that all the time. I tell my baseball team that
all the time. You got excuses.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
You're a loser.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Like winners just grind, Winners find a way. Winners say
my bad.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
And they move on. So here I am. I'm gonna
try to set the example. My bad.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
I do have a correction to make I believe. Look,
a lot has gone on. I'm not making an excuse.
I'm telling you what led to this last week when
I was doing some of those episodes.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
I'm in the process of leading the radio station.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
I'm in the process of trying to grab files and
trying to do things that I need to do to
set up everything from home. Friday, we did a show
where we talking about the power players in the region.
I full disclosure, that entire episode was off the top
of my head. I did not have time that morning.
I got to work that morning. It was my last day.
I had a thousand things coming at me that day,
(08:14):
and so during that process, I did not have time
to sit down and write out every name that I
wanted to cover. So we did the power players. We
did the top ten players going into the season on
the boys and the girl's side, and I got one
wrong because one player on the girl's side had transferred,
so we had to correct that on Monday show.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
But all of that was off the top of my head.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
All of that was just going through kind of thinking
back to last season, reminding myself in real time who
was returning, and then finding their stats from a year
ago to give you a little insight into while we
picked that player, I did not write them down. There
was no official list. I didn't write them down before
the show. I didn't write them down during the show.
(09:00):
It was a crazy day. And so Sunday we made
a correction because one of those players on the Girl's
side transferred, so we had to replace that player. We
had to change that player out, and so again top
of the head, right, everything was top of the head.
And in doing so, I believe, and I may be wrong,
(09:20):
and if I'm wrong, you can text me and correct me. Again,
I believe we left off one of the top players
in the region. It happens. It shouldn't have happened. My apologies,
but it happened. And so I'm not gonna like replace
anybody on the list. I'm just gonna add this player
to the list. So the Girl's side, you've got eleven. Somehow,
(09:41):
some way, we left off Ava Hughes. I think that's
what I was told, and I believe the person who
told me.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
I don't know how we did it.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
That's one of the top three or four players in
the region returning to the season. I really, I'm like dumbfounded,
but again, had a lot going on, not an excuse.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Wish I hadn't done it.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Off the top of my head, but I'm here to say,
my bad, my bad. If we did it, I'm here
to correct it. Ava Hughes as a sophomore, one of
the best players in the region as a sophomore average
what fifteen points a game? And if McCracken is gonna
be in the hunt this season on the girls side,
and I think they'll be one of those top five
teams all year. Will they climb into the top three,
(10:23):
I don't know. Will they be in that top tier,
I don't know, but they're certainly in the hunt. They're
certainly a top five team, and she'll be the big
reason because she's coming back off a super sophomore year. Well,
I think is gonna have a fantastic junior year. And
I think is you know, she was sort of the
next in line when they graduated Claire Johnson, when they
(10:44):
graduated Mickey Buchanan, Destiny Thomas, like they were that next
big player for them has been and was considered and
has been Ava Hughes.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
So my bad, I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Not only is she a top ten players, she's certainly
a top five player. She's certainly a power player. And
if I left her off again, take a club and
just bang me over the head with it. It's been
a week. It's been a week, So I have a
hues on the list. All right, take it a break,
we'll come back. We'll talk some football, talk a little basketball,
and we'll hear from coach Klindos here in a moment.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
This is Reagion one Sports. What would you say to
do here?
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Sports?
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Real sports, total carea basketball, football, baseball. We have one
goal here, Hello sports fans.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
The Region one Sports Report on ninety nine to five
the fan.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Region one Sports. Move it along here on your Wednesday
edition of the show.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
I mean, it's even hard to keep up with that
because it's actually Tuesday night when I record it. But
as we move along on your Wednesday edition of the show,
talking high school sports, we'll hear from coach Doss coming
up in our third segment today, So that interview is
coming up in just a little bit. By the way,
on Friday show, we'll hear from mister Andrew Clinton. His
brand new book about First Region basketball is available, and
(12:12):
you'll hear about that and more on Friday's show. So
Coach Taws in a moment, let's talk a little football
on this episode. So you look at the playoff picture,
you look at what we have coming up this Friday night.
And as I'm talking about it in real time, because
that's what I do, I'm searching for those games on
Friday night. But essentially, who do you got alive in
(12:35):
our area? You've got Mayfield still playing. They have to
go on the road Friday night, big big road game
for them, obviously, Paduka Tilman is at home against Logan County.
I think that's gonna be a close and tough game
for Tillman. I do expect them to win. We'll talk
about that in a little bit. And then you've got
Murray and Murray is are they on the road? Forgive
(12:55):
me again, it's been a minute. So I'm looking it
all up now as we look it up, as I
get into it, and I.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Don't know what happened to my computer. Hold on, give
you just a second.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
But let's start with Mayfield. I'll get back to Murray
in a moment. I'm on Mayfield's page. So let's start there.
Mayfield on the road LCA, Lexington Christian Academy LCA. Although
again we talked about this on Monday show. They have
three losses. Mayfield has just the one, but their RPI
(13:25):
is better and when you get to the third week
of the playoffs, you reformat and you go by the
RPI and Mayfield has to go on the road. Last season,
LCA came to Mayfield and came away with a monstrous win.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Nobody nobody gets.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Forty seven to seven wins over Mayfield, much less at
their place, and they did a year ago. Now they
return a lot of different dudes, right, not quite the
same football team from a year ago for LCA. In fact,
I want to kind of look at their stats last
season compared to this season to see how how different
(14:02):
it may be. But if you go back a year ago,
the Eagles of LCA, and it's taken a long time,
but there we go. They threw the football last season
at one nineteen per game, fourteen touchdowns, five picks. They
ran the football at two to seventy three per game
with sixty four running touchdowns. They had nineteen each from
(14:24):
their two top guys. They had a thirteen hundred yard
rusher and an almost thousand yard rusher. That's a lot
of touchdowns. Let's look at this season this season again,
three losses, a little bit different team. They run the
football or past the football one to ninety one a game,
twenty seven touchdowns, four picks, So that's already higher. Why
(14:45):
because they didn't run for as many touchdowns sixty what
I say, sixty four a year ago.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Cut that in half thirty two this season.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
That's still a lot, but thirty two rushing touchdowns this season.
They ran the football nearly two to seventy a game
last year. It's one fifty a game this season. So
they are more balanced, if not a little more pass
heavy this season. A sophomore quarterback and he's their leading rusher.
By the way, it looks like they are a dual
(15:13):
threat top line player. There's sophomore quarterback, leads them in passing,
leads them in rushing, and it's not even close. He
is seven hundred and thirty six yards rushing on the year.
The second leading rusher has three ninety seven. It's not
even a contest. He's blowing them away and he's throwing
the football at won sixty four a game and he
has ran. So, like Mayfield, your mission is this, stop
(15:36):
the quarterback. I mean, good luck, and it's easier said
than done. He's been a stud, but stop the quarterback.
You do that and you might win this football game.
But a lot going against Mayfield in this one, especially
in the playoffs, especially when you get to this week
of the playoffs, it's just so hard to go on
the road and get a win. We'll make our picks
(15:57):
on Friday, but that's what Mayfield's up against this week.
Let's look at I'm trying to go back here.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Bear with me.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Let's look at Murray their next so two a football,
Mayfield three a football. The Murray High Tigers, the unbeaten Tigers.
They host Lexington Catholic. So Mayfield goes on the road
to play Lexington Christian. They go play the Christians, the Catholics,
they're coming here. Mayfield's going to the Protestants. The Catholics
(16:28):
are coming to Murray. So Lexington Catholic, both LCAs. It's
a good football team. They do have to come here.
They do have two losses on the season. You look
at the Knights of LCA one hundred and seven yards
passing per game, seventeen touchdowns, five picks, one fifty four
(16:49):
rushing per game, twenty seven rushing touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Their stats don't blow you away.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
But a nineteen six loss to Ballard and a twenty
eight to twenty one loss to Lexington Christian. This is
a good football team. This is a good football team,
I think. I mean, if you look at who Murray
has played this season, it's the best football team they've
played all year. I mean, you can go back. Listen,
Apollo had a pretty good run this season. Okay, Calloway
(17:16):
made the playoffs, great Graves ended up having a down
year for Graves, but they were good.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
Russellville not good.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Mccrankin County fills it out at the end, high scoring game,
but they weren't interested in playing defense. Union County not
as good as they used to be. Calldwell County a
good year, but still had their struggles. This is by
far the best team that Murray's played all year, because
this team's gonna play some defense. Only once this season
(17:47):
have the Knights of Lexington Catholic giving up more than
fourteen points.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Let that sink in.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
It's not about their stats, because listen, they don't score
a lot of the football a ton either. They've had
some games, they've had some moments, but consistently that's not
what they do. They stop people from scoring. They give
up nineteen to Ballard, all Right, nineteen Ballard not a
great year, usually a pretty good football team.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
They're six A. They gave up.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
Fourteen to Paul Lawrence Dunbar, seven to Bowl County seven,
a great crossing shut out, Gerard County, give up eight
to Mercer, shut out, barge Down, shut out, Casey County,
gave up six to Ashland Blazers, shut out Western, and
they gave up fourteen points to Central last week in
the playoffs. Only once the season they've given up more
(18:41):
than nineteen points and a loss to Lexion Christian. They
lost twenty eight to twenty one, the most points they've
given up all year, and they only lost by a
touchdown in essentially a low scoring game.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
That's the challenge for Murray.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
They're not necessarily facing a killer offense. They're facing a
pretty good defense. It's gonna be interesting and fun to
see how that plays out.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
That is that Murray.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Listen, give a little bit of home field advantage to
the Tigers. But this is the best football team they've
played all year by far, at least defensively, and they've
seen some good ones. That's a great one. So that's
who Murray's got. Let's look at Paduka Tillman. Paduca Tilman.
(19:29):
They are hosting Logan County. And you know, if you're
gonna say Murray's playing the best team they've played all year,
can you say that about Logan County for Puduka Tilman,
Let's kind of look. I mean, yeah, I think other
than Mayfield, Other than Mayfield, Logan County was essentially the
best team that Tillman had played all year. It was
(19:50):
a thirty five to twenty seven game at Paduka Tillman,
a close game all the way through.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
And if you go back.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
And look, the second, well not second, third, fewest points
that Paduka Tilman scored all year at that point, it
was the second fewest points they had scored all year.
So they scored thirty five on Franklin Simpson, they scored
twenty two in a loss to Madisonville, and then thirty
five in a win on Logan County. But it's also
(20:20):
their closest margin of victory all year, thirty five to
twenty seven in this game. Since these two teams have played,
we do have head to head stats in this game.
I talked about this Monday, stone Crow fourteen of twenty six,
two touchdowns, two picks to forty one DeMarcus Wilson twenty
two carries, won fifty seven two rushing touchdowns. They had
(20:41):
Cameron Wade and Avery Thompson each with one hundred plus
yards receiving for good numbers, and they won thirty five
to twenty seven. Logan County not a jugger, not of
an offense. They've had some breakout moments, but they've got
a really good defense, clearly. But you look at the
Cougars of Logan County. Hey, I know a guy that
teaches them and coaches basketball. There shout out coach Frick.
(21:03):
Let you look at at the Logan County Cougars. They've
been a good football team this year. Just two losses
all year, one of those to Tilman and in that
game to Tilman, and I just clicked on the wrong thing,
so there we go. But in that game to Tilman,
they threw the football pretty well sixteen of thirty two
from their sophomore quarterback, two thirty five, two touchdowns, one pick,
(21:25):
ran the football thirty six times just eighty five yards,
still had two touchdowns and a couple of receivers doing
a couple of good things for them. So you look
at this game and it's at Tilman, and look, I'll
give Tilman the edge, and I think Tilman's a two
touchdown favorite. I know they only won by one score
when they played in the regular season, I get that,
(21:45):
but they also had a pretty somewhat close game against
Franklin Simpson. I'm sorry, not Franklin Simpson against I'm on
the wrong thing here.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
Hold on.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
They also had a pretty pretty decently Yeah it was
Franklin Simpson. They beat them thirty five to fourteen. They
beat them last week forty nine to fourteen. So I
think they are you know, if they were a one
touchdown better team in the regular season, I think you
can stretch that to two touchdowns. I think it's a
two score spread. So if you look at Mayfield, they're
(22:16):
the underdog. Mayfield probably a ten point underdog at this point.
I'm not gonna say the spread's ten. I'm saying the
margin of victory if they lose for Lexington Christian will
be ten. Murray probably, Man, It's tough, but Murray. I'll
give Murray a seven seven point favorite. I think they
win by one score. If they win. We'll talk about
(22:39):
this more on Friday, and then I think right now
it's a fourteen point gap right now. I think if
Tilman wins, they win by fourteen. But here's the thing,
and I said this on Monday, and I'm saying it
now and I mean it. I think it is more
likely that only one team is left standing in our
area after this week than it is all three. We're
(22:59):
not getting his sweep. At least one's going down, maybe two.
I think it's more likely you have just one advance
than three. I think it's probably a little more likely
you only have one advance than two. We'll see, but
all three advancing would be a surprise.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
Who that is. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (23:20):
I'm kind of going back and forth on a few, honestly.
But we'll talk about that more on Friday. We'll talk
about more on Friday. That's our football talk going into
this final well not final week, but then going into
another week of the playoffs. How about a little basketball
talk here. We're about to shift gears, We're about to talk.
You're about to hear the interview with coach Colin DAWs.
(23:43):
Phenomenal interview. By the way.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
You want to make a guy feel old. We covered
him in high school like.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
I covered him in high school, called I don't think
I ever called a game that he was a part of.
Maybe maybe I know Graves played Saint Mary there at
one point.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
I know they did. I'd have to go back and look.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
But but that makes the guy feel old when you
cover his high school career and then he he's the
head coach at one of the high schools that you're
still covering, and you know he tried to soften the
blow and tell me, hey, look, I'm a young coach.
I don't feel that it doesn't matter once you've joined
the professional ranks of coaching basketball. You've now aged me
(24:23):
when I've covered you in high school. But it's a
great interview. Like I said earlier'n you're gonna hear a
lot of things from him.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
And here's something else. I'm gonna be reaching out to
some coaches.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Once I get settled in more with my new job
and my new full time gig, I'll be reaching out
to some coaches. We can do these phone interviews at night.
We can do these phone interviews on the weekend if
you're available. But if you want to be on the show,
don't hesitate.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Let me know it.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
It thrilled me to death to know that you're reaching out.
Many of you have in the past, some of you've
already done it.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
For basketball.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
We're working on it, but you can let me know
two seven oh five three four threeh eight two seven
oh five, three four forty three oh eight. Just shoot
me a text, and we'll see if we can get
something done. But our interview with coach DAWs is coming
up in a moment. They got me thinking, though, you know,
a guy like that starting his career, not really starting,
(25:16):
but still early in his career, the kind of comparing contrast,
you're gonna have guys like that. You're gonna have coach
Dawson his first year in the region, not only first
year in the region, first year coaching high schools basketball.
He's been at the college level, but he's gonna be
going against another first year head coach at some point.
And Coach Kimbler again been around the block, paid his
(25:39):
dues at Graves County, finally gets his shot deservingly so
and I'm excited for him. And then you're gonna you're
gonna look over and you're gonna have other first year
coaches in the area at Paducazilman and and forgive me,
I'm sure, there's more off the top of my head. Again,
a lot of this is off the top of the noggin.
But you're gonna have guys like that coach to the area,
(26:00):
new to high school basketball coach Kembler's been around the
block getting his shot, first year coach at Graves. You've
got again, first year coach at Paduca Tillman, and they're
gonna be going up against veterans in the region. You know,
guys like coach Brian O'Neill, who's been the head man
at Carlisle County for twenty plus years. I mean, been around,
been there a moment. You know, Coach Donna who now
(26:24):
over at Marshall County. He's a veteran coach in the area.
He's got a regional title under his belt. That's a
veteran coach. Coach Roberts is only in his what third year,
fourth year, I can't remember now, forgive me, coach, but
he's only been there. I think this is his fourth year, right,
fourth year. He's a veteran coach. Now, you know, it's crazy,
(26:46):
the comparing contrast to those guys in the region. Coach
clevefor Colway, veteran coach in the region. Coach crofton Mayfield,
he's a veteran coach in the region. Coach Denson now
a veteran coach in the region. So you know you're
gonna have this kind of comparing contrast and these guys
at very different stages in their career and guys that
are young and new. I mean Coach Donna who won
(27:06):
early in his career, right. Coach O'Neil won with Carlisle County,
you know, early in his career and has had a
consistently good program for a long time. Coach Roverts this
year a favorite like that, that to me is the
is the fun stuff that to me gets intriguing when
you start watching these coaches at various points in their
career competing against each other.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
It's always fun.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
Sometimes the old dog has you know, still has something
up up the sleeve, and sometimes the new guy has
that energy and that that new life in a program
and that prevails. Always fun. Nonetheless, we'll take a break,
we'll come back. We'll hear from coach Doss here in
just a moment. This is Region one Sports.
Speaker 1 (27:47):
Talking your teams. This is the Region one Sports report.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
All right back here on the regional Forces Report talking
with Murray High School boys basketball coach Colin DAWs coach.
First of all, thanks for joining us, our first chance
to get to talk since you've been back in the
region and now a head coaching.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
In a local high school.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
Yeah, it's great. It's definitely a different feel. But now
I'm on this show as a coach and not a
player anymore, so it's pretty nice.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Yeah, don't make me feel older than I am by
knowing that we covered your playing days and now you're
coaching these kids.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
Not too old. It's a quick rise in the coaching career,
I guess.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
Yeah, pretty much. Just explain to people before we get
into the Murray stuff. Explain to people like kind of
where your journey went post Saint Mary getting into coaching
and now kind of getting back into Murray.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Yeah, so I went and played Division III basketball Western
University decided I got into the coaching game early, So
my freshman year of college, I started coaching AAU basketball
and with a program director and built a program to
be one of the more respectable AAU programs in the
state of Kentucky, which was nice because I was only
eighteen years old coaching seventeen year Olds, which was great,
(29:05):
and then as I went on, I was playing in
the winter and coaching in the summer, just traveling across
the country. I've been fortunate enough to make a lot
of really cool connections that are now Division one coaches.
I've got to work with a lot of Division one
programs in the summers. That's kind of how I got
my start. Then it led to my first college job,
where I was the head assistant men's basketball coach at
Brushion University and NAI in Orangsboro, Kentucky. I was there
(29:28):
for about a year and a half, almost two years,
and then was fortunate enough to be hired as the
headman's basketball coach at John Novin College last year. So
I packed my bags from Orangeboro and moved about nine
hours down through Pennscolobach, Florida, where I was tasked with
starting up not necessarily just being hired and rebuilding a program,
but starting up from scratch a college basketball program. And
(29:52):
I was the youngest coach in the nation last year,
head coach in the nation last year at twenty three,
So I was very fortunate for that. Great there's a
great time down there. Fortunate enough to win twenty five games,
had the number one offense in the country last year
for our division. Just a lot of amazing things happened
that a lot of people said would not happen down there.
(30:13):
So it was it was a blessing in disguise. And
now it led me right back here, right back home
to Murray, and I couldn't be more excited. Murray's a
great school, great tradition of excellence in all sports. Our
football teams still rolling, our soccer team had a great year.
So I guess now it's time to turn around the
boys basketball programs.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
Yeah, I was gonna kind of get to that, like obviously,
but you know, there was an open job at Murray
and then you put in and gets you back in
the area.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
But it's also a school.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
You know, it's a quote.
Speaker 3 (30:40):
Unquote small school, but there's opportunity there, there's athletes there,
there's resources there. So I'm sure that had to be
exciting as well to know you're not only coming back
in the area, you're coming back to the school that
has won in the region and can compete on that
level every year.
Speaker 4 (30:55):
Yeah, of course. So I mean kind of like I
stayed earlier for a full season, I've only co college
basketball before, uh so, coach in high school basketball, not
in a AAU concept or AU season is new to
me and I never really pictured me being a high
school coach. I always wanted to be a college basketball coach,
and of course I was successful at that, which which
(31:16):
I'm very blessed for that. But it was just something
about Murray. Obviously. I always thought it would be cool
to come back and coach high school in Kentucky, just
because of how awesome caches AA is and and the
community support and all that good stuff in western Kentucky.
But I never really knew, you know that, I that
I wanted to do it so soon and when Murray
(31:37):
opened up, I got asked by a couple of people
to apply for the job if i'd be interested in it,
and I was like, hey, yeah, Murray is a great job.
And I was fortunate enough. I was very nervous. I
was very very nervous putting it for the job. I
was like, man, am I not going to get this job?
I just I never knew I couldn't. I couldn't get
any cracks from anybody. And I was fortunate enough as
Greensfield gave me a call and I was. I was
(31:59):
actually on the beach that night when she gave me
the call, and I was just I was just jumping
for joy. It was amazing.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
So let's talk about this season specifically, I mean, because
it's all you really know. You weren't here last season,
but it was a team that was kind of going
through some growing pains and kind of having to reset.
But you've got a lot of talent, You've got a
lot of upside going into the season. Talk about your
team and what you see out of them going into
this year.
Speaker 4 (32:23):
Yeah, so we we pretty much for the most part,
have everybody back, which I'm very excited for to build
off of last year. These guys, the guys now that
are seniors and some juniors, was fortunate enough to win
with coach Curtis Coach Ull Curtis here won a couple
region won all Ay championships. So you know, they won,
(32:44):
but they've never had to really win as the leaders,
and last year they were they were really young. There
are a lot of juniors. I think only one senior
last year, so those guys got an opportunity to grow
and get that varsity experience early as sophomore than juniors
and even some freshmen now they're getting here a year older.
A lot of them got bigger, a lot of them
(33:05):
got stronger, And we really hit a lot of player
development this summer. So getting your whole team back essentially
and having a bigger, stronger, faster in a brand new
system and a brand new style of play, it's very
very exciting. Plus we got some new freshmen that came
in that transferred into us that'll be big for us.
So I'm really excited about this season and just the
(33:25):
guys that we have coming back in general, I think
it's a lot to build.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Also, yeah, I was gonna say, you know, you've been
on that college circuit and that's where you kind of
can recruit players and bring players in with the high
school level that you kind of are dealt with what
you have. What's been kind of the biggest challenges there
as far as like do you feel like you're having
to adjust anything or do you feel like you have
the personnel to run what you kind of always want
to run.
Speaker 4 (33:47):
I definitely believe I have the personnel, and honestly, it's
a great change of speed. I have a lot more
free time now that I'm not having to get on
phone calls and recruit and to podcasts like all this
crazy college basketball stuff. So I get a lot more
free time, which gives me a lot more time to
kind of help my craft a little bit as a coach.
So I feel like I've definitely gotten better and grown
(34:08):
even more as the coachins i've been here. So it's
it's definitely a nice change of pace. But I believe
our system, the system that I ran in college, the
system that I've always ran, it's kind of a mix
that I've learned from Shaka Smart when I first started coaching.
I believe that it's just I mean, it's really personnel based,
and I think we have the personnel do that, and
it's also more of a mentality and an energy and
(34:31):
just giving the effort to do so. You don't necessarily
need the fastest guys or the smallest guys or the
best shooters in the world to run the system that
we run. It's just about energy and effort and then
the mindset of getting defensive stops and getting turnovers and
forcing the pace. So I'm excited to see how it
turns out. You may ask me this again in January
(34:52):
and February, and I may say, hey, we're going to
look to play in the twenties and thirties next year.
But I'm excited about it. I'm excited about our personnel
and moving board of trying to run the system, taking
it from college to high school. I think it'll be
a good thing for the game.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
So as a fan of somebody, you know, they're obviously
that everybody's gonna be new to what you do as
a coach and new to what's going on this year
a murray. But as a fan, when they show up
to the gym, what are they in for? What is
the style of play?
Speaker 2 (35:15):
What? What are they going to be?
Speaker 4 (35:16):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (35:16):
What are they going to be watching this year?
Speaker 4 (35:18):
I guess, Well, definitely going to be fast paced. Of course,
there's gonna be times where we're gonna have to mix
it up, and I like to like the real definition
of what I call the system that we kind of
run is controlled a tempo, but controls.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
We don't necessarily want to take quick shots. Like you
hear NBA guys, college head coaches, some even high school
head coaches all the time saying we want to play fast,
and usually that means, hey, we want to shoot thirty
forty three is a game. We want to play fast.
That's not necessarily me We want to make sure we
get the best shot possible on the offensive end. We
just want to play fast and speaking up on the
(35:55):
defensive in so it's a little different. You know, a lot,
Like I said, a lot of people want to shoo
threes and have quick offense and shoot within ten seconds
and all that. But we just want to make sure
we maximize our effort and efficiency on the offensive side
and speech teams up defensively. So it's going to be exciting.
We hope it's the most exciting thirty two minutes in
the region. But there's a lot of really good teams
(36:16):
out here too that may have a little more excitement.
But we'll see. We're we have some goals that we
want to accomplish and I'm excited for that. I'm excited
to see how it works out.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
You guys have one of the more unique small gyms
in the region.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
It can really create a really cool home court advantage.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
You kind of played at one of those, and there's
the bigger gyms you will be on the road playing in,
but kind of talk about that, like, like what's that
environment like and how much fun is that when you
get that advantage.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
So it's actually quite funny. There's some days in the
week if we let out of practice earlier, we have
an early practice. I sometimes sit in the gym and
just look around and look at the gym, like, I
absolutely love Taylor. It is great Taylor Gymnasium. It rocks.
Like so I do some assistant ad stuff as well.
(37:05):
So I'm at volleyball games and all this stuff, and
you know, they don't necessarily have standing room only crowds
at some of these volleyball games, and it's still like
really loud in there. Last week we had a middle
school tournament and in the finals it was Graves County
in Paris, so it wasn't packed. It was there was
not many people there, but it was still crazy loud.
So I'm excited to experience a Murray Calloway game standing
(37:28):
room only, hopefully mccrack and Murray games standing room only whatever,
just to pack in the seats. I'm excited to experience
that for myself. I don't know if the players will
be able to hear me, and I don't know if
I'll be able to hear my players, but it'll make
some great memories and exciting times. For sure, I love it.
I enjoy it.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
You look around and I'm sure you're gonna give me
the coach answer on this, but when you look around
the region, have you have you had a chance to
kind of evaluate what's out there and kind of you
know where the region kind of stands going to the
season or is it just give me one game, one
week at a time.
Speaker 4 (38:00):
So we actually as the team. As a coach, it's
a little bit different, of course, but as a team,
we adopt a lot of people say want to know
everyday mentality, But we talked about beat yesterday. We just
want to focus on the present and we want to
just be better than we were yesterday. So in that sense,
we just want to be want to know and we
(38:21):
want to beat yesterday every single day. But I've been
fortunate enough where we've got to check out some of
the guys, some of the teams in preseason scrimmages and
also some teams in the summer. So I'm excited about
the region. I think it's going to be very competitive.
Of course, you have McCracken County. They're gonna be a
great team. I got to Washington Saturday, and they already are.
They look like they're in midseason form. They're ready to go.
(38:44):
But you know, a lot of other people, it's just
you don't know, you don't know what could happen. That's
what I was telling our guys yesterday. Actually, I said,
you could either end up at one or two this year,
or you can end up at fourteen to fifteen. You
never know. There's a lot of talent around the region,
and it's a lot of equal talent compared to usual,
if that makes sense. So of course last year you
(39:04):
had a great team in Callaway County, you had a
really good team in Marshall County. So like this year,
I just I think there's a lot of equalness across
the board and I'm excited to see that. Of course,
with mccrack and sticking out, this is a little bit
in front.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
So you mentioned earlier goals, you know, accomplished those goals.
What are the goals in your one What are the
things that you're you're hoping to get out of your team?
Speaker 2 (39:25):
Your program?
Speaker 3 (39:28):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (39:28):
Yeah, so I guess the most part is you're trying
to rebuild a program. You're you're taking over a program,
that's nine that had nine wins last year, and they're
returning everybody, so of course they kind of had that.
Some of them kind of had that negative mentality or
the losing mentality. They just felt like they weren't good enough,
and coming into that, we really got to when I
got the job, we've got to shift that mindset over
(39:51):
back to its winning waves, which is great. These guys
are bought in, they're ready to go, they're playing hard
every day, so I'm excited to see that. That was
one of the big goals that I had, is just
shifting and trying to get that culture shift back over
in year one, and it's happening a lot quicker than
what we expected as a staff, which is great, which
is great. So we hope that, you know, these other
goals of winning trophies and all this other stuff comes
(40:15):
into play later on down the line. Of course, I
think one of our biggest goals that's a little bit
earlier in the season is winning the two A sectional
since we moved so of course, Murray kind of dominated
that one A region for a little while with coach
s Fleener and coach Curtis. I think they won like
eleven regional all A titles, which is great, and then
(40:36):
we moved up to two A and we haven't got
one yet. So I would absolutely love to win a
two A sectional. And there's a lot of really good
teams in there. Union County till Many Callaway, Hopkins, Central Webster,
so there's a lot of really talented teams. So if
we can win that and go to the two A
state tournament, that would be great. But of course we
know nothing's guaranteed. But I also think our guys want
to be playing right back in our home home turf
(40:58):
at CFS to be this one as well.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
So all right, coach, well, looking forward to it, excited
for the future of Murray basketball, and excited to have
you back in the region.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
Yeah, of course, I'm excited to be back. I hope
everything goes as planned. We'll always see you. Always know,
adversity hit, so we'll see how we tackle adversity a
little bit. But I'm very excited for this season. I'm
very excited for the region.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
All right, best the luck this year.
Speaker 2 (41:22):
We'll see you down the road.
