Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five The Fan.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Anyway we go on your Friday edition of the show.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
I'm Brian Yorke. This is your November twenty first edition.
To be exact with the Region one Sports Report. As always,
you can get in touch with us here on the
show at two seven oh five, three four forty three
oh eight. That's two seven oh five three four forty.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Three oh eight. How are we.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
We've made it to a Friday. Hopefully you're doing well
on this Friday. I'm doing great, by the way, thanks
for asking. That's been a it's been a week. Right
when you start a new job, to start a new
career and transition to new roles, it's been uh, it's
been a week, but it's been rewarding. And that's uh,
you know, at the end of the day, that's the
least you can ask from a job, right, just to

(00:57):
have something in life that you find real. And I
think I've done that. So it's been a good week.
It's been a long week. It's been an.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Interesting first week, but here we are. We've made it
to the weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
And by the way, just saying, if you are Black
Friday shopping next week, and guys that you got to
think about your think about your wives here. If they're
gonna be Black Friday shopping next week and you're gonna,
you know, have to go with them, and some of
you do, I know you do. I've done it before. Well,
come to them all, come see us, come say hi.

(01:30):
We open at six o'clock. And I have been working.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Very hard this week to put together swag bags. Uh huh.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
And some of those swag bags have got some really
cool things in them. Some of those swag bags could
couldn't at you if you're you're one of the lucky
ones to get in one of those two hundred people
are gonna get, you know, pretty good gift cards. So
I'm just saying, we open at six o'clock. Swag bags
will be given out right as you come in. So
just saying that's what I've been doing this week, so

(01:57):
I can vouch for them. They're pretty good. Come see
us next week week that's a week from Friday. Don't forget, guys,
shopping season.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Don't forget.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
And if you want to suggest that to your wife,
had pretty good swag bags. I heard Brian tell me
that we'll have them next Friday at Kentucky Oaks Mall.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Looking forward to it. I gotta be there.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
I'll be there handing them out. So say hi, say
you heard me on Region one. It'll be fun. Nonetheless,
it has been a long week. It's been a fun week.
But here we are, the weekend is here and on
the Reason one Sports Report, we talk sports. We got
high school football, by the way, we'll get into that
tonight later on in the show before I forget. You know,
when you do this show from home, and you do

(02:34):
this show in a brand new way, you're not always
thinking about what the show usually the format we usually follow,
it's easy to lose track before I do.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Let me remind you.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Coming up later on in this episode, in our third segment,
you will hear from mister Andrew Clinton. He's got a
phenomenal new book out. It's available on Amazon. He'll tell
you all about it in the interview, how the book
came to be, how it came together.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
It's my go too, it's my resource.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Now.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
If you like me, love high school basketball, and you
love Region one high school basketball.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
You've got to pick up this book.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
You've got to get this book it is all things
Reagion one. So we'll talk about it later on in
the show. Hear from the man who put it together himself.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
This has been a.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Long time coming, a labor of love, and it's think
of it. It's not really a book you set down
and read cover to cover. It's it's got all the
stats and the scoring leaders and regional championship teams and
all of that information in it. So if you, you know,
speaking a gifts, speaking of Black Friday, speaking of upcoming
Christmas season, it's gonna make a great stock and stuffer again.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
It's on Amazon.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
We'll talk more about it later on, but if you
listen to the show, it's for you, and listen you know,
I told him like we have roughly this time of
the year, two hundred downloads and episodes of six hundred
listeners a week. That's the target audience. So you all
need to go out and give him six hundred, six
hundred book sales this week.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
But it is fantastic. You're gonna love it.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
And we'll talk to him about that. That's coming up
in our third segment today. As we get there, we'll
talk a little basketball as we get there, probably before
the end of the episode, but that is coming up
later on. Now, in the immediate we do have football
still going on for teams in our region. Three teams
still alive as we are in week three of the

(04:27):
high school football playoffs. Now, as I said on Wednesday show,
I can't keep track of the days. As I said
on Wednesday's show, three teams left, I think it's more
likely that only one team makes it than all three.
I'm not saying all three can't make it. I'm not

(04:48):
saying there's a world all three don't make it. I'm
just saying it's more likely. I just don't think all
three make it. I think somebody, maybe two are gonna
struggle this week.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
This is the week. This is the week.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
So, as I said, just just from an odds standpoint,
if you're just giving betting odds, I think it's more
likely only one team makes it through than all three.
The question is which team. The question is how do
we get to that team? The question is who? That's
what we still have to figure out. So you look
at the matchups this week, and if you listen to
Wednesday show, we went through this a little bit. But

(05:23):
we'll start with three A football I'm sorry. Two A
football Mayfield still alive. So we'll start with two A football.
Mayfield Cardinals are on the road Lexington Christian. Remember this
is a game last season that was a little rough
for Mayfield forty seven to seven. This ended Mayfield season
almost one year ago to the day. Right, They played

(05:45):
on November twenty second, twenty twenty four, and Lexington Christian
got a forty seven seven win. Now the year before that,
which is insane. The year before that, Mayfield won that
game fifty eight thirty six.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
So the question is does it flip again?

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Right, last season didn't go Mayfield's way, but that you know,
we talked on Wednesday. Lexton Christian has several new guys
in the skill positions, especially.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Getting it done this season.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
They're not quite the same team, but they do have
the higher RPI at resets in the third round and
that's why Mayfield has to go on the road. So yeah,
two years ago, Mayfield wins that game, scores a lot
of points. Last season, Lexton Christian Christian.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Wins that game. They scored a lot of points and dominated.
How does it go? How does it flip? Let's look
at the Mayfield Cardinals. This season.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Let's refresh ourselves. Let's remind ourselves who Mayfield is. On
the season, Gray Robbins is throwing the football one hundred
and sixty one yards per game, has twenty two touchdowns
and one count them. I can one interception, running the
football as a team one hundred and twenty one yards
per game, thirty five rushing touchdowns. That's the Mayfield Ardinals

(07:00):
their opponent. And again this is on the road at
Lexington Christian their opponent, and I'm trying to find it.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Bear with me.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Sorry, there it is. Throws the football one ninety one
per game, twenty three touchdowns for interceptions. They run the
football one fifty per game, thirty two rushing touchdowns. Now mate,
no mistake about it, especially in the playoffs on the road.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Mayfield is clearly the underdog. That's just reality. They are.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
They're the underdog. Christian lost three games. They lost them
at the beginning of the season. In fact, they started
the season one and three. Those losses are to Bull
County Christian Academy Louisville and Franklin County now Cow Christian
Academy Louisville. Pretty good forty seven to seven loss. It's

(07:50):
pretty good, but they've been on a roll since then,
and again Mayfield with one loss. The RPI favors LCA.
This is where and this is where we make our picks.
This is where we make our predictions. This is where
we you know, and I get it. The Mayfield fans
are gonna hate me if I pick against them.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
But here's reality.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
I've gone back and forth on this all week. The
stats say LCA is better, the RPI says LCA is better.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
And it's a road game for Mayfield.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
Would I be surprised if Mayfield wins. No, because the
history of this series says it's Mayfield's turn to get
them back. Mayfield won two years ago, LCA last year.
It's Mayfield's turn. But everything's stacked against the Cardinals.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
And now I get it.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
You're gonna have the Mayfield faithful say that's when we're
at our best. Doubt us will prove you wrong. You'll
hear all the old cliches, but reality is, the game
is not played by cliches and thoughts and motivating speeches.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
It's played between the.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Lines, and I just it would it would not surprise
me if Mayfield won. I don't expect them to win.
I think LCA is probably a two touchdown favorite. Probably
they For me, they would be favored to win this
game by at least at least ten points, maybe two

(09:12):
full touchdowns. Again, that does not mean that things can't
bounce Mayfield's way. They can't go on the road they've
Mayfield's got great skill, guys. Mayfield's got all the things
you need to win. Else As just looks to be
a little bit better. Looks can be deceiving. So I'm
not saying Mayfield for sure falls. I'm just saying, if

(09:32):
you're ballparking how this game is expected to play out,
that's probably more in line with what it looks like.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
That's two a football, three a football.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Murray's got their hands full. We'll talk about it when
we come back. This is Reagion one Sports.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
The fastest growing local sports show in the region. This
is Region one Sports.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
I got.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Pretty much Morts as well. Roll along here on your
Friday edition The show Man. It's been a long week.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
We roll along on the Friday edition of the show
as always. As I said earlier, don't forget that text number.
It's two seven oh five three four forty three eight
two seven oh five three, four forty three eight.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
And by the way, I said on Wednesday's show, I'm
gonna need help.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
I'm gonna need people who will text and you know,
share information and and uh kind of help with the show.
And several of you have that does not go unnoticed
just because it might not be information I use on
this episode, it is not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you,
don't stop, keep it coming. Need all the help I
can get, clearly.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
All right.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
So we talked Mayfield and l C A. Lexington Christian.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
Now I said, I think Elsea, you know, they're probably
being viewed as a ten point four, you know, two
touchdown favorite. Right now, everything's stacked against Mayfield. Here's kind
of the other thing, and the reason why the RPI
favors them is their schedule. Their strength of schedules simply
been better. Now some of that you can't help it.
If you're Mayfield, you get into your district and it
it wasn't very good and you blew a lot of

(11:16):
teams out.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
And that's kind of the problem.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
Mayfield hasn't played, let's be honest, a good opponent since
they played Tilman in the third week of the season.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
Let's just be honest. Because McCracken faded and failed by
the end of the year.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Cranting County was not up to the par for them.
Todd County is not good, Carbole County was not up
to par. Trick County is not good. Fort Campbell's not good.
Central not great in the first round of the playoffs.
Hancott County pretty decent record, but not a great team.
They just haven't played anybody yet, haven't played anybody good
since Paduca Tilman in September. And you know, you wonder
how much that plays into it. Tonight we'll see again.

(11:51):
Wouldn't be surprised for Mayfield to win, just based on
how things look on paper. Don't always expect it. Now,
moving on to Murray, because they've got their hands full
tonight the Murray higt Tigers. You know, if again, if
you know, Mayfield's playing the Christians, the Protestants, the Murray
Hot Tigers, they're playing the Lexington Catholics, they're playing the

(12:14):
playing the Catholic School l c A Catholics, whom Murray's
gone tonight.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Now, the good news for Murray, this is at Murray.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Murray's unbeaten record gives them the favor in the RPI.
Again though doesn't mean they might be the better team,
but it does certainly lend to them. It certainly skews
in their favor. You look at the Knights of Lexington Christian.
They have two losses on the season.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
At Lexton Catholic, they have two losses on the season.
They lost to LCA Lexton Christian and they lost to Ballard.
So far, that's been it. Good schedule, good team. Let's
look at the numbers. The Knights are led by a
senior quarterback who only throws the football at ninety yards

(13:03):
per game, fifteen touchdowns, two interceptions. As a team, they
run the football at one fifty four per game with twenty.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
Seven rushing touchdowns.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Now you compare and contrast that to the Murray High Tigers.
Murray throwing the football at two forty two per game,
thirty four touchdowns, three picks. Running the football won eighty
eight per game, forty three rushing touchdowns. Now Here is
my concern for Murray the same thing you could have
just said. I just said about Mayfield. They just haven't
played anybody. Again, McCracken had no interest in playing defense.

(13:36):
So they scored it will They gave up a lot
of points to a good offensive team in McCracken County
in September. You got to go back to the Graves
County game to really find a game where Murray struggled,
where Murray was challenged, where Murray played a good opponent.
In fact, their strength to schedule over all the season,
and I know I got a lot of Murray people

(13:57):
that listen, and I get it.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
Not a schedule, if we're being honest.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
Now, Pollo is good, and you know that turned out
to be a great win on the road. Graves better
than their record. That turned out to be a great
win at home. Marshall County wasn't good, Russellville wasn't good.
Like I said, McCracken County, it's a good win at
the time, gave up a lot of points. Webster County's

(14:24):
not good, Union County not as good as they've been
in the past, Hopkins County Central terrible. Godwell County again
not as up to par with some of these teams.
So you wonder if a lack of really being challenged
plays into this over the last few weeks, over the
last two months, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Here's what I know.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Same thing as to why I kind of said I
expect Mayfield to be the underdog and probably fall in
their game. The same reasons though, why I kind of
expect Murray. It's at home. They're good, They've got a
great offense. On paper, they're better. How much of that
is strength of schedule? How much of that is, you know,

(15:04):
a schedule that kind of favored them to be able
to take the talent they have and do what they had.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
But that's that's the other part of this. They've got
the talent.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
So for the reasons why I don't feel as good
about Mayfield on the road, other reasons why I do
feel good about Murray at home.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
And I do think Murray wins.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
I think this will be a close game, but I
think they're a ten point favorite in my eyes, and
we'll see how it goes.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
That's three A football and.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
Then last, but not least, the only other team alive
in our area Paduca Tilman. We go to four A
football with Paduca Tillman. Tilman won loss on the season,
played Madisonville North Hopkins and lost, still an unexplicable loss
if you look at it. Madisonville kind of overrated most
of the year, kind of, and they kind of shocked

(15:52):
everybody when they beat Tilman back in September.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
They've rolled ever since.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
They played Logan County, the one team, to be honest,
the one team that gave Tilman the most fit outside
of losing to Madisonville, the closest victory they had all
year thirty five twenty seven. Now these two teams have
played each other, so it's worth looking at that head
to head match up. And in that game to Logan County,

(16:18):
Paduka Tillman's offense threw for two hundred and forty one
yards two touchdowns, two interceptions, ran for two hundred and
eleven yards, thirty four carries to eleven and three more
rushing touchdowns.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
Pretty good stuff Logan County.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
In that game, the Cougars of Logan County had two
hundred and forty eight yards passing, two touchdowns, one pick,
just eighty five yards rushing, but two rushing touchdowns, so
they did find the end zone. They didn't run the
football well, to be honest. They passed a little better
than expected, and that's kind of the thing. Logan's County's

(16:56):
defense is good. They can once again keep Tillman in
the thirties.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
They can. I just don't think they can outscore Tilman.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
You look at Logan County overall in the season, the
Cougars one hundred and eighty six yards passing per game,
twenty six touchdowns, nine interceptions, ran the football one hundred
and forty nine yards per game, twenty.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Nine rushing touchdowns. Puduka Tilman for one.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
It's worth again, we know their numbers pretty high. Two
fifty five per game passing, thirty seven touchdowns, sixteen interceptions.

Speaker 2 (17:31):
That does worry me.

Speaker 3 (17:33):
One hundred and forty seven yards passing, twenty five touchdowns
or rushing rather and twenty five touchdowns. I think Tilman wins.
I think Tilman wins by at least again. I think
they're a ten point favorite at home playoffs. I think
Logan County's defense will play them well. I think Logan
County's defense will give them a little bit of a scare.

(17:56):
But I don't think Logan County's overall offense scares may
Puduka Tien. And you want to win to the playoffs,
especially on the road, you gotta play good defense. They've
got it, but you gotta be able to score that'll
be the big question mark for them, so I expect again.
I said it's more likely only one team makes it
than three. I didn't say that two teams weren't gonna

(18:19):
make it. I think we do get if I was betting,
I think we get two teams to next week. I
do think Murray finds a way to win at home.
I think Tilman certainly finds a way to win. I
think Mayfield could be the team that doesn't come home
with a win.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
But we'll see. What do I know? Not much? Not
much that's football on this Friday. Basketball guys. It's it's
now less than a week and a half away.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
Like we're all gonna be, you know, enjoying Thanksgiving dinner
next week, and I'm gonna be enjoying Black Friday and
hopefully you will too. And then we're we're coming back
to basketball. And when we come back to basketball, it
is full blown. Here we go, like just hold on tight.
Three and a half months of chaos and things are

(19:13):
hectic and just all the fun that we can handle.
And I was, you know, doing the coaches show for
Graves County on Wednesday night, which is always fun.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
You know, free food, great food, good.

Speaker 3 (19:25):
Conversation, and I'm talking with coach Dunning on the Lady
Eagles side, and we're talking about depth, and we're talking
about players stepping up, and we're in one of the
things that both coaches Dunning and coach Kimbler. And I'm
gonna get to that conversation a moment because you talk
about when the press conference.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
We'll get to that.

Speaker 3 (19:44):
But one of the things they both brought up independently
was things you don't think about as the average fan.
Things you don't think about even as the broadcaster.

Speaker 2 (19:55):
We all kind of go into.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
The season, you know, we put these expectations on return
players and we say, because of this, this team will
be good. The unknown are the things these coaches are
thinking about. And not just with players we don't know,
not just with the new incoming players, the freshman, the transfers,
sophomores that are stepping into starting roles, but even those

(20:18):
veterans that you kind of have an idea about. Sometimes
they come back in their game is different, right. You know,
sometimes a kid has been a three year starter and they.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
Come back for their senior year, but they're having to
take on.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
A new role because of who you graduated, and sometimes
it's feast or famine.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Sometimes it's sink or swim. Sometimes they were better in
that other role than they are in the role they're
having they're being asked to play.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Those are not always things we think about, and it's
something that I'm trying to.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
Be more aware of when we go into the season.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
But that's always for coaches sort of the interesting struggle.
What you know, I've had this player for three years,
They've been a starter for multiple years, but now they're
gonna be leaned on in a way or in a
different role than they've been in the past. Now, what
do we do now? How do we handle it now?

Speaker 2 (21:07):
What do they look like? That's that's a fun thing
to think through.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
Now, speaking of winning the press conference, I'm talking with
coach Kimbler, and here's the theme this season. We're talking
about all these teams. You know, it's no doubt everybody's
chasing them a kraken. They've got the talent, they've got
the best starting lineup. They've got a true big, they've
got a guard that can score. They've got shooters, they've
got height, they've got size, they've got.

Speaker 2 (21:29):
Athletes, no doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
But then you're looking at teams like Graves County, who
everybody has not just me, but most other people have
in the top three four of the region. Marshall County
ain't going nowhere, right Murray, we expect to be good.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
Saint Mary, we expect to be good.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
So like you know, you're looking at these Carlisle, we
expect to be good.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
You look at these teams.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
And one thing that we talk about teams that are
gonna win, we talk about teams that are chasing, but
then we talk about these other teams like Graves, who
has been a basketball proud program that has not been
a good basketball program the last eight years.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
It just hasn't. It's been average.

Speaker 3 (22:11):
It's had moments, but it's not been one of those
top true teams in the region. It's occasionally seen our
power five on Region one, but not consistently. And one
of the things that he talked about, and one of
the things that's on the Graves County folks minds not
that we haven't won the region in a long time.
It's been a long time. We haven't won a regional

(22:33):
tournament game in a long time. Graves County won the
region in twenty seventeen, they made it to the regional
championship in twenty eighteen. They have not won a regional
title game or regional tournament game since.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
That's a long time now.

Speaker 3 (22:49):
There's been some bad luck, tough draws, you know, things
can play into that, but that is a long time
without getting one win at Murray State, one win for
a program that has been so basketball proud, and coach
Kimbler said on Wednesday night talk about when the press conference,
he said on Wednesday night, it's unacceptable. There's a standard

(23:11):
that has fallen at Graves. There's a standard that used
to be set at Graves and we will reach it.
And if you're the kind of player that isn't willing
to do the work to get there, move along because
we'll find somebody who is. That was the message, short
and sweet, win the press conference, and I thought he did.
That wasn't his press conference, it wasn't his introductory conference,

(23:33):
but it was his first time really addressing the radio
listenership of Graves County and the passion that he had
to want to see Graves County restored. It was not
that long ago that Graves County was a thorn at
a lot of people's sides. It wasn't that long ago
that they were winning their eighth regional championship, one of
the tops in the region, and boys basketball, it's been

(23:55):
a long time since they've won a regional tournament game.

Speaker 2 (23:59):
I think he's got.

Speaker 3 (24:01):
The personnel to do it, he's got the passion to
do it, he's got the knowledge to do it, and
he's at the school that he bleeds blue and gray.

Speaker 2 (24:11):
So that got me.

Speaker 3 (24:11):
Pumped up and excited for basketball season, and that's something.

Speaker 2 (24:15):
To watch as we go into the year. All Right,
speaking of basketball, our interview with mister Andrew Clinton is
coming up now.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
I will warn you on the phone. We did the
interview on the phone. I had no issues. Somehow the
recording got messed up, jumbled up, kind of came in
and out a few times. I did the best I could.
It is kind of what it is. You'll get the
ust of it, you'll get the most of it. You'll
understand what's going on, but there are some hiccups in it.

(24:43):
My apologies. Again, that wasn't because we're recording the show
a different way. The recording just messed up. So hopefully
we'll get that iron out in the future, but don't
miss it. Great interview. He's got a fantastic book. We
want you to know all about it. It's coming up
here in just a mo. This is Region one.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
You were listening to the Region one Sports Report on
ninety nine to five the fan.

Speaker 5 (25:16):
Back here on the Region one Sports Report where we
have got another interview from who. We've got special guests,
and we've been doing all these coaches interviews and I
know Andrew that you've been a coach, but the reason
we're talking to you is because of a new book
you've got out. Before we get to that, do want
to say, you know, we've been promoting it and I
want people to know where'd this start? Where did it
come from? And how did we get to a point

(25:38):
where you're now an author with a book to sell
on Amazon?

Speaker 6 (25:42):
Well, I mean it started back what two thousand and eight.
I was the head coach at Pulton County and we
had Jeffrey McClain had just graduated, and then Leonard Smith
was picking up some seam as a really really good
purchase player, and so a lot of people were just
talking about, you know, where he would rank with statistics

(26:03):
and you know where did he rank at Fulton County
and well, we didn't have a scoring list, so I
kind of just took it on my own, going through
back some old score books that we had and some
microfilm at the at the the newspaper as Paduka sign
and I kind of started with the list to kind
of get an idea, and then it just kind of

(26:23):
it started there. Of course, then I left Fulton County
and it kind of died off, but then about it
COVID the itch kind of started, you know, it popped
back up, and so I just started working back through
all that and I really started, you know, at twenty
twenty I think it was, and I was going to
work my way back to two thousand, and it just

(26:44):
kept going from there.

Speaker 4 (26:45):
And I just kept looking up stuff.

Speaker 5 (26:53):
Yeah, you know, the labor of love, and it's kind
of more of a almost like a media god of
scorers and stats and records.

Speaker 6 (27:05):
The challenges in getting to this point, well, at first,
the major challenge was just finding all the information. So
at first I was going to do kind of like
the last twenty twenty five.

Speaker 4 (27:20):
Years is what I really wanted to do, KHS double A.

Speaker 6 (27:23):
And of course coaching is putting in statistics would have
made it easier. And then so I found out just
from some other people just talking about it, that a
lot of newspapers put a lot of their files on digital. Now,
well that really changed it. Whenever I found out that
through the Paduca Sun, I could access almost any newspaper.

(27:47):
Now there are there's going to be lapses in some
newspapers and sometimes they didn't get digitalized or whatever.

Speaker 4 (27:53):
But so early on it.

Speaker 6 (27:57):
Was just finding the resources. And then as I found
out about the digital copies, of course, then the hurdle
was literally just going day by day, you know, combing
through the sports pages of the Paduka Sun or the
Mayfield Messenger or the Louisville Career Journal, and finding all
the box scores for all the games that were played
each day, and then just organizing that, which h actually

(28:21):
took quite a long time.

Speaker 5 (28:27):
Is this one of those things, because obviously you haven't
through the through this current year, but is this one
of those things where you feel like you might feel
a need to add to it or put a second
book out in five or ten years.

Speaker 4 (28:39):
Yes, I would like to.

Speaker 6 (28:40):
Now that I've done a lot of the heart well,
the hard work has been done. Now now, just keeping
everything organized year in and year.

Speaker 4 (28:47):
Out a lot easier now that I've already dug.

Speaker 6 (28:51):
Through the fifties and the sixties and the seventies and
the eighties, because that wasn't you know some school like
uh well grades and then you know, Marshall and Carlisle
had they've done an excellent job of keeping up with records,
but other schools had not. It's kind of like starting
from scratch, you know, when you know.

Speaker 5 (29:12):
We've been promoting it and telling people what it is,
but when somebody gets a hold of it, what are
they in for? What? What are you know, let's say
you're a Callaway County laker and you want to go
back and look at the Callaway County things. What are
the things they're going to find in the book?

Speaker 6 (29:26):
Well, so they and this is where it started. So
it started as a regional tournament, district tournament, district runner up,
just where you could just kind of collect all of it.
Actually didn't even start as a book. It started as
a hobby and then it just came a snowball. But
you'll be able to find that. So, you know, if
you want to know who won the region in you know,

(29:48):
nineteen forty nine, it's there, you know, if you want
to see who was the firstrict champion in fifty six,
it's there. So with Callaway obviously whenever they open up
after consolidation in nineteen sixty one, so you'd be able
to find that. You'd be able to find a fairly
comprehensive list of any man or a woman that had
coached at the school for both boys and girls. Obviously,

(30:10):
all Purchase players, all stay honorable mention for a second,
third team leading scores, a thousand points score lists, that's
a tournament, the district or the regional tournament bracket, the
sweet sixteen bracket, with that sort of stuff that I
really enjoyed doing the most, just because I enjoyed looking

(30:32):
at that kind of stuff. But you'd be able to
find that great for each year and for each school,
which is the reason why it's taken so long.

Speaker 5 (30:45):
One of the questions that I have gotten the most.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
So I'll let you.

Speaker 5 (30:48):
Set this straight, is is it boys and girls or
just the boys?

Speaker 4 (30:54):
It is boys and girls.

Speaker 6 (30:57):
Unfortunately, it's going to be more boys fame girls for
a variety of reasons.

Speaker 4 (31:03):
Won the boys. I can go back.

Speaker 6 (31:05):
For the most part, I go all the way back
to nineteen forty and come, you know, move forward. Whereas
girls as I think most people know that they did
not even start through KHS Double A into nineteen seventy five.
Now they have, they had growth basketball in the nineteen twenties,
but I think in nineteen thirty one KHS Double A just.

Speaker 4 (31:24):
Kind of removed it as a you know, as a sport.

Speaker 6 (31:28):
And then obviously, I think with Title nine and stuff
like that, in nineteen seventy four, nineteen seventy five, a
girl you know, girls basketball starts over again. So I'll
be clearly more information on the boys side. There's just
more resources to find on boys information. Unfortunately, when you
go back to the nineteen seventies nineteen eighties, it was

(31:51):
very common for some of the girls teams not to
have all their box.

Speaker 4 (31:54):
Scores in and the articles.

Speaker 6 (31:56):
For in as linked as many unfortunately, you know, for
the female girls sports fans. But but yeah, it's football,
both boys and girls basketball.

Speaker 5 (32:06):
Yeah, that's you know, that was the question that kept
coming up, and we kept I kept trying to trying
to explain that, like, well, it is a little different.
I'm sure it's in there, but I'll let him answer that,
and after you talked about going back to the thirties,
forties and fifties, I'm sure that was just as challenging
to the girls stuff. Considering those hurdles that you were
going through to to collect some of that.

Speaker 6 (32:26):
Well it and yeah, it was really hard to just
find information on the nineteen fifties was actually, and I've
spoken with several other people that have done similar work
to what I've done, the nineteen fifties was it was
just a great time for the Baduka Sun. And as
far as high school there, they were posting stuff everywhere.

(32:47):
They even have sometimes like a top two hundred scores list,
which for me, oh wow, it was amazing because like
you just you know, in nineteen fifty five, you just
did the whole work for me, a lot of it,
and then you know, so the nineteen fifties was just
golden as far as the Paduca Sun goes with sports
and doing stats and rankings and stuff like that. In

(33:08):
nineteen forties was a lot more challenging just to be
able to find all the box spores, which is just
another hurdle that not all the box sports, you know,
not every coach called them in and not everyone gets
published in the paper or you know, so there's obviously
missing information for almost every team except the older teams.

Speaker 5 (33:34):
What you know, One of the questions I was curious
about to ask you myself was what surprise was anything
in there that that you found surprising? Or what best
kind of favorite thing that you discovered in doing this?

Speaker 6 (33:48):
Oh? A lot of things, I really Well, the thing
that I've told a lot of people is the nineteen fifties.
So the nineteen forties just overall, when you look at
the scores as the games where I think what a
lot of people would say was would be in early basketball,
you know, twenty eight to twenty two, and you know
for twenty six. You know, so for whatever reason, about

(34:12):
nineteen fifty two, the scores just explode. You where there
are tons of hundred point games. You have, you know,
a large number of players scoring a lot of points. Now,
a lot of that has to do with the rule changes.
A lot of free throws were shot, and the courts
were smaller because there was no regulated port links, you know,

(34:35):
the dimension. Some of the courts were really really small,
so you get up and down.

Speaker 4 (34:38):
The point really quick.

Speaker 6 (34:40):
But just the overall amount of points scored in the
fifties and in the sixties, I guess the rules changed
and the scores starts to come back down a little bit.
But man, the nineteen fifties they really scored the ball.
I mean, you have two to one thousand point scores
in a single season in the nineteen fifties, and so
that that was really shocking. And just the overall number

(35:00):
of thousand point scores. I figured there would be a
lot because you're talking, you know, sixty five plus high
schools playing you know, over a span of close to
one hundred years. That's a lot of players.

Speaker 7 (35:12):
So yeah, you know that to me, that's my excitment
to the book myself.

Speaker 5 (35:26):
I've been promoting. He's kind of explained like who is
for the staffard the handbook for anybody that kind of
kid playing.

Speaker 6 (35:42):
Now, Yeah, so I do have all of uh, the
information all the way up into the you know, current year,
which you know, the start of the seasons I've seen
from last year. I have all that in there. But
I really like the part of you know, just the
rankings and just the current records. I also have like

(36:03):
the most points scored in a game for each of
the Boys' School for both player and the overall school,
which some of those were actually really surprising, like I
had heard of the Marshall County Christian Fellowship game back
in the early two thousands, but then there was a
lot of other ones that are you know, one hundred
and twenty five points in a game and one hundred
and thirty one. But then also I really the other

(36:27):
part I really like about the book is, you know,
I think that I have found all of the high
school's leading scores, especially on the boy's side, you know,
which is I enjoy that at being a stat nerd
so I enjoy looking at all that stuff.

Speaker 5 (36:44):
So where where is it available? So when people go
pick it up and get that stoking for this year,
where are they going to get.

Speaker 6 (36:51):
Well, currently it's at just you know, I've used Amazon
the publisher, so it's Suitazon, And of course I have
bought a large copy, you know, a large number of
books that I'm going to try to sell at some
you know, area games and then hopefully at some other
venues that I'm going to obviously.

Speaker 4 (37:09):
Have to promote.

Speaker 6 (37:11):
Just waiting for those books to get in when you
buy them in book like that, it takes a little
bit longer, so I'm just really sitting and waiting for
them to all come in so that I can then
you know, show up to a couple of games and
hopefully have some books sells at the more local level
for people that may not know about the book or
see it on Facebook or on the other social media platforms.

(37:33):
So hopefully those books will come in. I've ordered them
now I just playing the waiting games of Amazon.

Speaker 4 (37:40):
So right, all right, Well, I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 5 (37:44):
I've got mine on order, so when I get it,
I can't wait to get dive into it. It'll be
a great reasarch for me. I've recommitted it to everybody
that has a bastion of basketball, and I'm excited you.

Speaker 3 (37:55):
To did it.

Speaker 5 (37:55):
I'm thankful and grateful you did it, and I'm I'm
happy for you, and I hope it.

Speaker 2 (37:59):
I hope it's huge success.
