Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five the faan Welcome in and
away we go.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
It is a Wednesday, November fifth edition of the Region
one Sports Report. I'm Brian Yorke. I hope you're doing
well on this Wednesday. If you've got something you'd like
to say, well, we've got a text line for you.
You can give us a shout on the text line

oh eight. As always, you can connect with us as
(00:35):
well on all of our social media pages on x
on Facebook, on Instagram, and I don't even know we
might be on other things, but if you find us,
give us a shout out on social media as well. Again,
though it's Wednesday, hope you're doing great. As we have
made it halfway through the work week, I'll go ahead
and give you a heads up. I'm running way behind today,
(00:56):
like meaning I'm going to have to rush to get
caught up because I am recording this about seven minutes
before it's supposed to air. So the first segment today
going to be a little short to try get something
on and then hopefully that'll buy me time to get
the rest of the show timed out to where it
needs to be. It's sort of the radio thing that
has to happen, but that's what we're working on. I
(01:18):
got here this morning, the computer that I record on
was not cooperating.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
We had to restart it.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
It took twenty something minutes to restart, and then that's
how my day is gone. Like that's pretty much been
how the rest of my day is forgot my wallet
at home. I stopped to get a coffee and a
biscuit this morning and realize I didn't have my wallet,
Like it's Wednesday, but it really is kind of a
Monday for me. So hopefully it only gets better from here.
(01:44):
So nonetheless, gonna be a shorter first segment as we
get into our show today, but we'll play catch up
and hopefully be caught up as soon as we can
rush this out for the radio.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
So here's what we got today.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
We've got some football talk because we got to get
into the playoffs. Week one of the playoffs to starts
this week, and we'll get into those matchups and start
talking about teams paths to winning a state right like
to if you're gonna win, if you're Graves County in
five A, you know what's your path look like? If
you're mccracking and six s A, if you're you know
what's Tillman's path look like. Who's got the best chance
(02:16):
to win state in their class? Like, we'll talk about
that and kind of work through it, and then as
we go today, we're gonna start getting into some basketball
because I'm ready for it.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
I'm here for it. I'm ready for it.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
I know we've still got a little less than a
month away before the first games tip off, but we
gotta start talking about it. We gotta start breaking it down.
We got to start getting into it. So excited for that.
And that's all on the docket today now without further ado,
Let's get going because I told you we got to
get the first segment out. I got to get it
out before I can kind of move at the pace
I would like to. So here's the other thing. McCracken
(02:51):
County and volleyball. They fall in the state tournament on Monday.
They fell to Bowling Green three oh so, three sets
to none. They lost twenty five to fifteen, nineteen and
twenty five twenty Bowling Green were the best teams in
the state of Kentucky, one of the favorites to win
the state tournament. They win, they move on. Both McCracken
season comes to an end former Cracken County, another another
(03:15):
regional championship, nothing to blink an eye at, and another
team that again just kind of keeps that standard that
other teams in the region just simply can't reach. Right now,
thirty one and eight overall record to finish out their year,
eleven to ohero in the region, they went eight to
oh in their district and then again falling in the
first round of the volleyball tournament that happened on Monday.
(03:36):
So volleyball for us on our coverage and all that
goes with it completely done. Now we are focused solely
on football to finish out the fall and then getting
into our basketball stuff.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
It's a weird time. It's a fun time, but it's
a weird time.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
So that's where we are now as we get into football,
the last thing on the docket for us. We have playoffs,
yes we do, and we're going to go sort of
class by class.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
We're gonna start.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
With one a football work our way to six at
the teams in the region that we have that are
in the tournament or in the postseason, and we'll talk
about their path, and then again we'll conclude with who
has the easiest, not maybe easiest, who's the most likely
to win a state tournament in their class? I mean,
clearly you're looking at at Tillman, Murray and Mayfield, three
(04:22):
different classes, by the way, but you're looking at those
three teams. In between those three teams, Who's most likely
doesn't mean who's better. All those classes are different, they
present different challenges. But who's most likely we'll get into
that today as well. So let's start with one A
football Fulton County in one A football Ballaard electing not
to be in the playoffs. Fulton County is in the playoffs.
(04:44):
They get Bethlehem on Friday night. So what do we
know about Bethlehem, Well, we know they're good. We know
they're good small school. Obviously one A the Eagles out
of District two. They ended up with what four wins
on the regular season. Now, they did have wins over
Seneca and Frankfurt and Gerard County and Holy Cross Louisville,
(05:05):
which they're not great but you see the trend here.
Their losses are to teams. Again, there's like no opponent
you're really gonna know anything about on their schedule. But
we know they're good and this game is at Bethlehem.
Looking at their stats and looking at who they are.
They throw the football at one hundred and forty seven
yards per game, They run the football at ninety nine
yards per game, sixteen touchdowns in the air, five interceptions,
(05:28):
fifteen touchdowns on the ground. For your Fulton County Pilots,
a two win team this season as they get into
the playoffs, is the second seed in their district. The
Pilots this year, their offense looks better than their record.
I mean, they're two and seven, but their offense looks
good on paper. One hundred and ninety four yards per game,
nineteen touchdowns, thirteen interceptions. They run the football at one
(05:48):
forty three per game with fourteen rushing touchdowns. I will
make my picks on Friday. But this is even though
Bethlehem not a great team, this is an uphill battle
for Fulton County. They are clearly the underdog. They have
to be on the road. They have to travel for
this game, and I'm concerned with where Fulton County is
after the Russellville loss. That game we thought would be competitive,
(06:10):
we thought would would be a fight, and they go
on the road to Russellville with a chance to win
out the regular season and be the top seed in
their district, and they go not only lose, they lose
sixty four to fourteen. Thought that it thought it worst,
it might be a two maybe three score game, and
it ends up being a blowout. That concerns me if
(06:31):
I'm a Fulton County fan, I'm not going I mean,
you took care of Kaverna. Obviously, you took care of Ballard.
You should have, But Russellville was sort of a comp team.
Russellville was the team you were competing for for that
district regular season title. They weren't any better during the
regular season. They had the gift of playing Hopkins County Central,
who's terrible, and their scores with Ballard and Kverna were
(06:54):
not all that different from you, and you go and
they just absolutely she lack you. And that's just the
nicest way I can put it. That concerns me for
Fulton County on Friday. It does because Bethlehem may be better,
may be better than Russellville, So I'm concerned. I'm rooting
(07:17):
like crazy for the pilots. Again, you kind of see
where my pick is going here. But as far as paths,
as far as chance to win and advance and move on,
this is a tough one for our one A football
team here in the region. It's gonna be tough on Friday.
All right, let's take a break. We'll come back two A, three, eight,
four A five, six A. We'll get into all of
it when we get back.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
This as Region one Region one Sports, we know local
because we are local.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
I'm gonna tell you is you got to come again.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Region on Sports. As we move along here on your Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Edition of the show, I can't even keep up with
the days, So Wednesday edition of the show, It's gonna
be nice today. It's gonna got up to nearly seventy today,
So I've started off in sweatpants and a sweatshirt, which
means I'll be just absolutely roasting here by the time
I leave work this morning.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
But it's gonna be nice today. That's something to look
forward to.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
And the football playoffs, we talked one a football with
Fulton County. Let's talk to A football with Mayfield. So
Mayfield our loan two A school. Now that Murray is
in three A, so Mayfield again their path. They have
TBA because they get a buy. This week they are off.
They will meet the winner of Hancock County and Codwall County.
(08:37):
And if you look at it, that's kind of a
flip a coin game. I mean, the Hornets from Hancock
County are pretty good. Although you know, they lost big
to a lot of teams that they probably should have
lost too, But they beat all the teams they should
have beat.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
So that's kind of one thing. They played Codwall County.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Hancock is gonna be the home team They're gonna be
the favorite in this when you expect them to win.
So I'm kind of expecting Hancock County to win, but
but you never know. Cardwall could pull up the upset.
Cordwell has been a better team this season. I mean,
you look at the Tigers from Cardwell County, you look
at what they've done this year. Yeah, they lost big
(09:13):
to Mayfield, if they're a six and four football team,
much improved under coach McClung here this season. Remember they
won like kind of down the stretch last year. They
were really struggled in the first part of the season
and then ended up getting what three straight wins to
close out the year, including the first week of the
playoffs over Fort Campbell. By the way, they were the
(09:35):
road team, then they were not the favorite in that game,
and then lost to Mayfield in the playoffs in the
second week. It was a Tigers team that ended up
with only what five and seven, But again they got
a win in the playoffs and ended up winning three
straight to close out the year. So they kind of
got hot at the right time. They were much better
(09:55):
and more balanced this season. They lost to Union County,
they lost to Mayfe, they lost to Critney County, lost
to Murray. Yeah, all right outside of Critnon County probably
right where you should be, so expecting Hancock County to win.
We expect that to be Mayfield's opponent next week. But
if you look at Mayfield's path, and we'll talk more
about this big picture later on, it's the third week
(10:19):
of the playoffs, their second game that you gotta be
concerned with because they're gonna get okath They're gonna get
Owensborough Catholic that week. Owensboro Catholic's only loss was to
Owensboro a thirty four to twenty one game, and Owensborough
might be the best team in the entire state regardless
of class. Catholic good again this season. So if you
(10:42):
look at it and again it'd be based on RP
and I think they're ahead of Mayfield in the RPI,
So this would be at Owensboro Catholic Mayfield's path this year.
That's much more difficult than they're used to. Usually they
get the home game that week. Usually they're kind of
in the driver's seat to make that run to h.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Kroger Field.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
But again, it'll be the third week of the playoffs,
but their second round for them, their second opponent, and
that's looking like the big sort of log in the path,
if you will, sort of the thing that's gonna if
it's gonna prevent them, it's gonna happen that week. Okays,
really good. We'll talk about that more in a moment.
That's two A football, three A football. You're Murray Hot Tigers,
(11:27):
Murray Hot unbeaten this year. They get eight Air County
and week one of the football playoffs they're terrible. So
Murray is gonna get a big win in that one
eight Air County their opponent the Indians. You look at
the Indians on the season eight three and seven football team.
They throw the football at ninety three yards a game,
they run it at one seventy per game, six passing
touchdowns twenty two rushing touchdowns. You can sell out on
(11:48):
the run and you're gonna beat them and beat them big.
That's just reality. But if you look at the path
for Murray in the playoffs expecting them to move on,
they would get Hart County in the second week because
they're gonna beat Hopkins County Central and Hart County is good.
And if you're talking about paths and roadblocks and things,
that's where you get a little worried. Heart County is good,
(12:11):
but they also struggled with a bad Trig County team,
and they you know, like there's some things on their
schedule that doesn't exactly scream that they're gonna beat Murray.
So you sort of do kind of expect Murray to
get another week into the playoffs, and then you're looking
at like kind of trying to figure this out. You're
looking at maybe what cal No, They're on the other
(12:33):
part of the bracket, So you're looking at probably Glasgow. Okay,
that's where things get tough. So again and again we're
gon talk big picture in a moment to A. For Mayfield,
looks like the roadblock will come in the third week
of the playoffs. For Murray, it looks like it could
come in the third week of the playoffs. Now if
they win that game, if they do get there and
(12:55):
they do play Glasgow, who they probably will and most
likely will, and you do beat them, which will be
the uphill battle, it looks like your semi final game
would be cal So Again, their path in this playoff run,
like Mayfield, could end in week three. They not have
the harder path though, Like if they get past Glasgow,
(13:18):
then they play Christian Academy Louisville, then they, like three
A much more difficult when you get to that part
of the playoffs. So keep that in mind when we
talk about this more later. But that's Murray. That's three A.
Then we go to four A. We got a couple
of teams in four A. We'll start with Paduka Tilman.
Tilman again, a one lost team this season. They get
(13:38):
Taylor County on Friday night in Week one of the playoffs.
Taylor County is not bad.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
The Cardinals out of Taylor County. They did lose three
straight to close out the year, but they do come
in with a record of seven and three. They run
the football at two hundred and sixteen yards a game,
two sixteen a game, twenty six rushing touchdowns. They only
throw the football about eighty two yards per game, seven touchdowns,
nine picks. You can just see right there, this is
(14:05):
a matchup problem for them because Tilman is quick strike,
get it downfield, take deep shots, and this is an
opponent that's just not built for that.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
The moment Tilman gets a lead.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
They're gonna win the football game because this is an
opponent that is just not built to score quickly or
try to try to win from behind. So that's gonna
favorite Tillman on Friday Night. So Tillman gets Taylor County.
If they win, and they should, they'll get the winner
of John Harden and Franklin Simpson. And you would expect
(14:38):
John Harden and John Harden.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
This is not great. They're the better team of the two.
They're not great.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
So you would expect Tillman to get another win and
get to the third week the playoffs, where they will
probably run into either Elizabethtown or Logan County. They are
the favorites in their matchups. We'll talk more about Elizabethtown's
opponent here in a second, so they play callaway, but
Logan County is very good. Logan County lost two games
(15:05):
in the regular season. They lost thirty five twenty seven
at Paduka Tillman, so could be a potential stumbling block.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Don't expect it to be.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Still expect Tilman to be a favorite in that game,
but certainly Logan County. Their defense is really good. Elizabethtown
they also were a two lost team in the regular season.
They lost to Taylor County and to Owensborough Catholic. Big
to Catholic. I don't think they would be as big
of a challenge as Logan County would be again for Tilman,
(15:34):
so keep that in mind.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
It is a little bit.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
All things are relative, but if you're talking two, A three,
a four, a football for a tends to be a
path of least resistance to a state title. Didn't say
it's easy, didn't say it's not difficult. Didn't say you
can't get upset or beat. Those are still good teams,
(16:00):
maybe not as good as what you'll see in two
A and three at that part of the playoffs. So again,
big picture, keep that in mind, but Tillman looks like
they have a path again. Third week of the playoffs
would probably be Logan County. If they beat Logan County,
then you look at the other side of the bracket
and there's some good teams. But again, you gotta kind
(16:21):
of keep looking at Tilman as a favorite all the
way through. It's just different in four A. One of
the teams in four A with them Calloway County, who's
back in the playoffs for the first time in what
five six years? I think five maybe six. I o
havet to go back and look. Somebody's screaming it at me.
I know I'll get a text on it. But the
first time in a long time, Calloway County is in
(16:41):
the playoffs, which is why, by the way, when teams
opt out of the playoffs, it aggravates me, Like it's
special to make the playoffs for some of these teams.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
And I get it.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Some of these teams can go winless and make the
playoffs because they have to. I get it. But man,
there's some teams that like they celebrate getting there. It's
been a minute. Callaway's one of them. Calloway County, unfortunately,
will get Etown. Etown's good. The Panthers of Elizabethtown throw
the football at won sixty five a game. They run
the football won eighty nine a game. They score twelve
(17:12):
in the air and twenty five on the ground, So
they do run heavy, and they do get a lot
of their points to their offense on the ground. No
real common opponents. They did lose to Owensboro Catholics fifty
six to six. This is at Etown, and again that's
where you give Etown the edge. Calloway They're not gonna
be content with just getting here.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
They're not. But it is something six and four for
Calloway County.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Again, they run the football at one eighty nine a game,
not that far off.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
From their opponent.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
They throw the football at one eighty two a game,
twenty two in the air, twenty seven on the ground.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Logan Smith gonna be big in this game. He's gonna
be big in this game.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
I just worry if Callaway has enough quick strike and
can play from behind if Etown gets a lead. I
just don't know if Callaway will be able to win
from the that's sort of a key something to watch
on Friday night. But nonetheless, nonetheless, when you look at it,
callaway again, don't just celebrate getting here. I think it'll
(18:12):
be a competitive game. But they're certainly the underdog on
Friday night. And then, of course, you know, I just
gave their path. Even if they win that game, they
would probably get Logan County in the second game. Again,
doesn't get easy for them, doesn't get easy. But that's
for a football in our area. That's four A, five
A football. We got Graves County, six A football, we
(18:34):
got McCracken County. We'll talk about that and more. Got
to take another break, We'll be back.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
It's Region one, Region one Sports in for the Deep Dive.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Pre Good Sports, rolling along on your Wednesday edition of
the show, talking football, going through the playoff teams, their
pass and everything that we need to discuss here. As
we get in week one of the football playoffs, let's
talk five A football. The only team in our area
in five A football the Graves County Eagles. My Eagles
start their playoff run this week at Bowling Green. Normally
(19:12):
an extremely daunting task. Now I'm not saying it's easy
I'm not saying like, oh yeah, bring on the purples,
here we go, but I'm saying normally you go, oh crap,
Bowling Green, like there may be one of the top
two teams in the state regardless of class.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Not this year. Are they still good? Very much.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
They played one heck of a schedule, but this is
a year, this is a year you could get them now. Unfortunately,
Graves has also had their struggles this season, playing better
football down the stretch, obviously hitting their stride, obviously making
great improvement down the stretch. Three consecutive wins to close
out the regular season, including a win over over McCracken County,
(19:56):
who everybody had been fawning over at the end of
the year, who had cracked the top ten and six
a football who'd been scoring on everybody. And Graves comes
out and proves their defense is what it is. It's
very good. And their offense had been making strides and
again I think showed the weakness in McCracken that their
defense is capable of letting them down right now. And
it is. But Graves proved no matter how you start,
(20:17):
it's how you finished, and they're finishing strong. Can they
finish strong. Can they go beat Bowling Green. Remember in
twenty fourteen to start their run to a state title game,
they beat Bowling Green and it was the upset of
the of the millennium. It was a big upset. This
one not quite the same because again Bowling Green is
down by their standards, Graves is down by their standards.
(20:40):
But this is still a four seed versus one seed.
And if you can go on the road and travel
all the way to Bowling Green and get that win,
you're gonna send shock waves through the state. Just the
same the Purples, which still is I don't get it,
but the Purples they throw the football at one hundred
and fifty seven yards per game on the football, one
(21:00):
five per game, seventeen touchdowns in the air, fourteen on
the ground. Now that's seventeen touchdowns three interceptions. They're still efficient.
They're still good at throwing the football. They have good receivers.
They don't again have that quite elite holy cow level receiver,
but they still have very good receivers. They do have
a freshman quarterback, and Graves is a good defense. Can
(21:24):
they do enough to mess with that freshman quarterback and
get him out of rhythm? Get him out of time
and get him to make mistakes. Again, He's been good.
Sixteen touchdowns, two picks, one fifty nine a game, but
still a freshman, very good, Still a freshman. They've got
a senior running back, their top runner is only forty
(21:46):
yards per game. He's a senior. And then their top
receivers are all seniors. But again, four hundred and eight
yards total for their top receiver this season a far
cry from what Bowling Green has been in the past.
In fact, you just take a look get who they
were last year, winning the five A state football title.
A team that lost two games all season won to
(22:08):
Frederick Douglass and one to South Warren, which is nothing
to pat an eye at. But that team very senior heavy.
That team had a quarterback throw for thirty one hundred yards,
forty five touchdowns, nine picks. Didn't quite have a great
running back either, but they didn't need one. They had
a thirteen hundred yard receiver and again, so just far
(22:28):
cry from where they are this season. But they're still good.
Their schedule, by the way, they lost the first four
games of the season. They played Okath, Saintax, Scott County,
South Warren. Yeah, that's pretty good. All those teams are good.
All those teams are in the playoffs, and all those
teams have a shot to win games. Graves County again,
(22:49):
they played in their first four weeks three opponents that
were ranked in the top two in their class. So
these are two teams that have been battle tested. That's
my point. These are two teams that did not start
winning until the end of the year. Both of these
teams have won, did win three straight at one point.
At the end of the year, both of these teams
are four and six. Graves is still the underdog, but
(23:13):
it's it's doable, and to win in the playoffs, you
just simply gotta believe.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
You gotta believe.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
So if Graves can go believe and they can go
make things happen, and they can go do what their
defense has done all year, they got a shot because
the offense has gotten better. Is it good enough, Well,
that's the other question. We'll find that out on Friday.
But that's Graves. If they were to win, they would
probably get Apollo in the second round, and that again
is a winnable game.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
But what an unbelievable story this could end up being.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
Could still gonna be tough, but could that you go
four and six in the regular season, one of your
worst seasons in sixteen years, which is saying a lot.
But you go four and six, then go get a
fifth win in the playoffle get a sixth win in
the playoffs, and you end up six and seven and
losing out in maybe the third round of the playoffs.
(24:08):
One heck of a way to end the year, one
heck of a way to turn it around. And that
is a path that Graves can find themselves on. I
think the harder opponent of the first two weeks is
in the first round, you win that, you have a
shot in the second game to avenge Apollo and get
to a third round of the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
Quite the story.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
Quite the opportunity ahead for Graves County, despite the season
not going quite how they wanted it to. So that's Graves.
That's five A. McCracken County is in six A. Mccracking
County gets a gift of Central Harden this week. Now,
Central Harden did finally win a game this year. They
beat North Bullet. North Bullet was at least a three
(24:49):
win team. Central Harden. I love coach Gregory man I
love him winning his coach in Graves County history. I
got to work with him when he was the interim
coach a few years ago for Graves. Love him. Man,
they were bad this season. That's his new team. It's
a complete rebuild that he's going through over there. And
year one was exactly what you kind of expected it
(25:10):
to be. But they may be the worst team in
high school football, at least in Class two through six A.
You're gonna find some worse one A teams, but two
through six A they were rough this year and then
they finally get a win, and they get a convincing
win over North Bullet. Now I'm not saying that's enough
momentum to propel you to come to McCracken County on
(25:33):
Friday and get a win. But coach Gregory's familiar with
McCracken County. They're not unfamiliar to him, right, That's at
least a coach that kind of understands McCracken County a
little bit. So just saying now, I do expect McCracken
County to score at will, because that's Central Harden's problem
is they give up a lot of points. McCracken scores
(25:53):
a lot of points. Central Harden doesn't score a lot
of points. Well, McCracken's defense does give up points, but
an opponent like this that doesn't do well, this is
gonna be a week that could that could at least
make the defense feel good. McCracken is I'm just gonna
tell you they're gonna win this game big Friday night.
This is a gift for McCracken. And if they win,
(26:15):
and they should, they will move on to face Henderson
County because Henderson County is gonna beat Mead County. So
then you'd be setting up another game with Henderson County,
who you beat at their place fifty five forty two.
This game would be at McCracken. So you kind of
look at it. You go, well, man, McCracken, they have
a very viable path to the third round of the playoffs.
(26:35):
Who would they get in the third round of the playoffs?
Probably South Warren, And that's probably where the season comes
to an end because you're gonna get South Warren. South
Warren is as good, if not better than anybody else
in the state. Again, outside of Owensboro, they're right up
there for best team all around in the state. But
for McCracken County, your season may not come to an
(26:56):
end until Friday, November twenty first. Pretty good run, but
that's their path, that's what would be standing in their way.
So I asked the question, who is most likely to
win a state title? You take all that in consideration.
McCracken has a shot to get to the third round,
but South Warren that's just that's a lot. Graves has
(27:18):
a shot to get the third round. They do, but
then they're going to run into a lot Callaway probably
not as good of a path. Tillman for a football,
different animal. They're a favorite, and they'll be the favorite
pretty much every round they play. So you got to
put them in that conversation. You look at Murray in
(27:39):
three A football. Murray's got a shot to get to
the third round, but that's where things get really complicated
for them. Mayfield and two A football, again, they got
a shot to get to the third round. It would
still be just their second game. They get the bye,
that's where things get complicated for them. So once again
this year, I think you're looking at Paduca Tilman. Now,
I don't necessarily right now and predicting Tilman to repeat
(28:03):
as champs. But they've got just as good a shot
to make a run as they could won. There's just
more passive resistance for some of the other teams, as
good as they are. So I think if you're answering
asking that question, who's most likely to win a state
title based on class, based on bracket, based on potential opponents,
(28:25):
to at least get to a state title game, I
think it's Puduca Tilman.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
So that's what I would say right now.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
Now Again, on Friday, we'll break these down a little
bit more, we'll give our picks all that that we
do on Friday, But for now, I think Tilman's the
most likely. Then probably outside of that, maybe Mayfield because
if they go up to Okath in that third week
and they win, you could see them getting all the
way to the state title game at that point and
having a shot to win it at that point. So
(28:50):
I'd go Tillman, then I'd go Mayfield, Then I'd probably
go Murray. Doesn't mean Murray can't, doesn't mean Murray won't.
That's just kind of how I would look at.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
It right now.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
So there you go. All right, that's our football talk.
I promised basketball talk. So let's do a little bit
of that right here now. We're going to do our
official preseason Power five in a few weeks. We're gonna
do our official top ten players to watch going into
the season here in a few weeks. Like we're going
to get into all of that here sooner than later.
(29:18):
So I'm not gonna do that today, but just thinking
out loud, man, you think about the basketball season coming up,
you think about what you're looking forward to. There's a
lot to look forward to. You've got coaches starting their
first ten years in their schools, and I'm gonna leave
somebody off, but on the boys side, you got coach
DAWs down and Murray reigniting and re exciting that program,
(29:40):
and they feel like they had a lot of momentum
out after the summer, feel like they had some things
kind of go their way. You've got coach Kimbler at
Graves County, a lot of excitement, a lot of momentum
kind of coming out of summer with that program. We
expect them to be a top three, top four program
going into the season.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
You got your perennials.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
You got coach Dona who at Marshall and he listen
Marshall lost some scoring man. They lost some guys, and
you worry about where the points are gonna come from.
We know they've got maybe the best player in the region,
if not one of the top two three players in
the region. But then what where's the support system. Who's
gonna step up and replace you know, a Staples and
a Robertson, Like, who's gonna who's gonna lend that kind
(30:21):
of scoring to Marshall Because without those guys last year
or when they were off the floor, that offense stalled
out a little bit. So you're looking at that, but
you get you can't count Marshall out. We've learned that
year after year after year with coach Dona who so
looking forward to them with Craken County talk about favorite
in the region. Spoiler alert, they're the number one team
in the region right now. With the transfer of Miles
(30:42):
Woodford with Cloak back and healthy, that's that's a tandem
in itself that's gonna be tough. Then you got the
Miller kid and just they're gonna be a handful for teams.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
I was talking about new coaches.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
You got change over at Paducah Tillman controversial firing of
letting coach Overstreet go. They bring in coach Davis, a
lot of pressure on him. He lost his his star
senior player to the transfer portal after coach O was
let go. So there's a little bit of a rebuild
going on at Tilman. We'll see how that goes this season.
(31:15):
Talking about Perennials, talking about Staples, you got to coach
o nil over at Carlisle County. He's got a bunch
of guys back off of that team last year. So
just a lot of things to kind of look forward to.
I think the overall point is I think McCracken is
the number one team. I think they're the As far
as starting five, it's gonna be hard to find another
team in the region you could say is better than
(31:36):
that starting five, or at least on paper, better than
that starting five. But then you get past that, I
think you're gonna have a lot of parody. I think
you're gonna have a lot of back and forth with
a few teams. Like everybody expects Mayfield to be down,
but they're never really down. They always find a way
in the end to be competitive and come back and
make a run. So I think there's more depth. I
(31:57):
think there's more parody. I think when you get that's
McCracken County right now, then you can make a case
for who's number two, three, four, five, And you probably
could make a case for about about seven teams right
now for those spots four spots, six to seven teams
could make an argument. So that's what we're getting into.
When we get into basketball season. On the girls side,
(32:19):
you know everybody's gonna annoint Callaoai County and right now
going to the season, they're the number one team. They've
got the best duo in the region. They've got the
best player in the region, and then I think probably
the second best player in the region. So you got
Low and Coke. The question is again, are they deep enough?
Do they have a tertiary player that can step up?
They lost one off of last year's team when somebody
(32:41):
step up and take that mantle. I think they are good.
I think they're well coached. They've got the best tandem.
Do they have enough depth when those top two players
are getting doubled off and being concentrated on do they
have that third player that can burn you and hurt
you and step up in ways to make you pay.
I think they're number one, and then outside of that,
(33:01):
everybody's gonna look at Graves and go all they're down,
really because they've been as perennially as anybody. They've been
in that top three conversation every single year despite who
they graduate.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
Losing hand a Glisten is big.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
Losing you know the players they you know Addison Woodowski
her come back here last year, that those things are
gonna hurt. But they've got talent, they've got depth, They've
got a veteran group this year. They've got a lot
of seniors, and there are a lot of seniors with
a lot of experience. So maybe they don't have that
one player, but I think as a collective they're as
good as anybody in the region, maybe deeper than anybody.
Speaker 1 (33:34):
Else in the region.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
And then Marshall County. Maybe you look at Marshall County
and you go again, you're looking at it and going, well,
they lost Waller, they lost it, Like they're still really good.
They have as good of a starting five as anybody
in the region. Then you got Mayfield, you got coach
Fauss moving over there, and he's got a team ready
to win. They're probably gonna be your LA champs this
year in the region. They're the favorite. And then if
(33:58):
I had to slot them in the top five, if
they're in the conversation for one of those spots after
Calloway County again, Calloway is going to kind of take
that top spot. Then you've got Graves, Marshall and Mayfield,
and then that's kind of where things fall off in
the region. That's where you're going to see a lot
of parody. But I don't think those teams in that
next tier are going to be quite as competitive and
as good as those teams I just mentioned. But I'm
(34:21):
excited and I'm here for it, and those conversations begin
and we'll continue as we go forward. We'll do our
preseason power five next week, We'll do our top ten
players next week. We'll start getting into all that next week.
As far as today, out of time, out of topic,
We're done. Hope you've enjoyed it. This has been Region
