Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian Yorke
on ninety nine to five The Fat and Away we Go.
It is a well, let's see, it's Tuesday night as
I record the show, so it is a Wednesday radio
edition of the Region one Sports Report. I'm Brian Yorke.
Hope you're doing fantastic on your Wednesday wherever you may

(00:28):
be and however you may be listening. The text number
in case you want to get in touch with me
on the show is two seven oh five three four
forty three oh eight. That's two seven oh five three
four forty three oh eight. Very grateful. I'll just say
that out of the gate, I've been saying that the
more texts that come in, and the more people that

(00:48):
are willing to step up and say, hey, just you
know this happened at this game, or boy boy Mayfield
look good or Carlisle look good, or that, you know,
whatever it may be. The more people that do that,
it just makes things easier on me, and it makes
it to where we can keep this thing going a
little longer because full disclosure, it is ten forty on

(01:09):
a Tuesday night as I record this, which means it'll
probably be about eleven forty when I finally get it
done and wrapped up and loaded and sent where it
needs to go, which means I have been working. Let's see,
I got to the mall at eight thirty. I left
straight from the mall at four point fifty five, got
to Graves County for my doubleheader, just got home, just

(01:32):
got showered, and just set down to record. So I've
essentially been working since eight thirty this morning. I'll stop
at eleven thirty tonight. Now, listen, don't feel sorry for me.
There's lots of people who work days like that. Put
in the time, put in the effort. You do what
you gotta do. But the more people who are willing
to send in those text messages are helping me keep
this flowing, keep this going. And I can't say thank

(01:52):
you enough. Thank you. Even if I don't always directly
read the text message, your information does help formulate a
lot of the content on the show, So thank you
for that. Now onto this. This is a new one
because it's so late at night, I really had nowhere
to go in my house to record that it was
gonna be either a place that sounded good or wouldn't

(02:17):
wake somebody up. Normally, I record in my walk in
closet because it's the most soundproof. You know, You've got
all the clothes in there, and so it kind of
dampens the sound so it doesn't have a lot of
echo and background noise. Here's the reality. Couldn't do that
because it was gonna be too loud for the bedroom.
Then I was gonna go in the utility room. Well,

(02:38):
the laundry's going right now, the washer's going, the dryer's going.
I didn't want to stop that because I'd forget. That
gets you in a whole different world of trouble. So
then I started to record in my living room. Too
loud to echo. It's an open living room concept. It's
too too much space, not enough noise, dampening kitchen even worse.

(02:59):
So here it is. You ready, I'm in my pantry. Yeah, now,
I know it might be a little echoe in here,
but it's the only place in the in the house
that I can actually get loud talk do my thing
and not bother anybody and not have a lot of
background noise come into the microphone. So I am standing
in my pantry with the door closed. Hopefully, hopefully nobody

(03:23):
locks me in and uh, I have my phone setting
on one of my shelves, and here we are. This
is this is my reality, this is my life now.
But this is what I love to do. I love
Reagion one sports man. I'm at my game tonight with
Graves in Callaway and I can't wait. I'm like, I
don't even I don't even want to know a world
where I couldn't talk about this game, Like where all

(03:46):
I get to do is just broadcast the Graves games,
which are good enough, by the way, for me, it's
good enough. But where I don't get to go in
and speak to the Callaway County crowd, speak to those fans,
speak to fans of other teams. I just, I just
it's been too a part of my life for too long.
So this is the sacrifice. This is what we do
now in my pantry at nearly eleven o'clock at night

(04:08):
to record this show. So again, I cannot thank you
enough for the text matches messages two seven oh five,
three four forty three oh eight. All right, so here's
the deal with today's show. It's Wednesday. We do power
rankings on Wednesday, so we're gonna do that. We'll have
our power rankings. Today, we're gonna go over games from
the last few nights. Something kind of hit me too

(04:29):
tonight when I was at my callaway game, And you know,
I've been thinking as we've shifted into having to make
adjustments to when I record the show, how we do
the show, it also makes me think of ways to
make the content better. You know, that's the number one goal.
The content still has to be good. It still has
to it has to get better. And I was sitting

(04:50):
there tonight and I thought, Man, you know, I might
say some things like if I wasn't at a game,
and again, I'm only gonna be at whoever Graves plays, right,
But if I'm not at a game, it's really hard
for me to have a thought, have an opinion on
that game. So the best I can do most nights
is just report what happened, to report what we know.

(05:11):
Then the thought the opinion's gonna have to come in
when I get to finally see these teams. And so essentially,
as teams play Graves this season, they'll get more talk
on Region one. That's just how it's gonna have to be,
because that's where my thoughts in my mind and where
my basis for the conversation is gonna be. Doesn't mean
I won't talk about other teams. That's not what I'm saying.

(05:31):
Doesn't mean we might not spend ten minutes talking about
McCracken County and I didn't see them play yet. It
just means that the focal point of that show is
gonna be on Graves' opponent. Some nots, it'll be about
what Graves did with that opponent, some knots, it'll be
about what that opponent did with Graves and where that
kind of leads us into the regional talk. So tonight today,

(05:53):
rather on today's episode, this Wednesday episode, we're gonna have
scores and reaction, We're gonna have powering Kings, and then
we're gonna have thoughts on Callaway because I finally got
to see them tonight, both girls and boys, and you know,
the girl's side will kind of reaffirm what I've said
so far. I'm very confident that that was the thought
I had tonight, and the boys side, I think, look,

(06:15):
there's gonna be a problem for somebody, So we're gonna
talk about that as we get into the show today.
So that's that's like the best way I can handle it.
And by the way, my voice is starting to go.
I mean, it's been a long day. When you work,
you know, it's not out of the ordinary. I worked
an eight hour day, but I'm a marketing director. A
lot of my job is communication. It is talking to

(06:36):
other people, is it is a constant state of communicating.
And then I go from that to a four hour
broadcast and now I'm here it's starting to go. So
hopefully I get through the show without cracking too much.
But that's how we're gonna do it from now on.
You know, it'll be kind of who plays Graves. We'll
get a little bit more of the thought and the

(06:57):
talk on that episode, so everybody will kind of have
their do as we go through the season. I promise
not to be two Graves heavy, but that's just reality.
So we'll have reaction to scores, we'll have power rankings,
and then we'll have thoughts on on more on Callaway.
We'll kind of hit Callaway in the power rankings, but
I'll save a lot of those thoughts for when we
get more into that specific part of the show today.

(07:20):
So let's get to scores. Well, we'll go back and
look at Monday scores first and then we'll look at
at Tuesday scores. Monday scores, we'll start with girls basketball.
On Monday. In Region one, you had Mayfield beating Carlisle
County in overtime fifty six fifty two. We'll come back
to that. Paduka Tilman beat Fulton City sixty to forty six,

(07:44):
and that was all we had in girls basketball on Monday.
And boys basketball on Monday, CCA beat Pope County that's
called Conda, Illinois, eighty two sixty one. Murray getting a win.
It's the first win and the coach dos Era of
Murray Athletic. But Murray gets the win over UHA ninety
three forty three. We'll come back to that. That is

(08:06):
Monday's games. Let's go to Tuesday's games and keep in
mind some of these probably won't be reported as I'm
recording on a Tuesday night, but we'll do our best.
Tuesday's games girls basketball, Callaway County beat My Lady Eagles
fifty two forty yup. I told you we'll come back
to that. Critinon County over McCracken County fifty six forty nine,

(08:27):
Hickman County over CFS sixty eight twenty seven, Murray beat
Fulton City forty three thirty nine, and Saint Mary's Girls
beat Ballard Memorial fifty one thirty seven. In boys basketball,
on your Tuesday, you had in Region one, Henderson County
beating Paducah Tillman sixty five forty seven, Marshall County over

(08:48):
Carlisle County Big eighty one fifty four, Murray beat Fulton
City big as they should ninety six twenty two, Saint
Mary over Ballard Memorial in over time sixty to fifty eight.
Uh oh, I'll have some thoughts on that coming up.
And uh, Graves County holds off Callaway County sixty four

(09:09):
sixty three, and again we'll come back to that. So
what stood out like initial thoughts before we go into
power rankings later, Let's go back to Monday. I want
to keep this in order. I won't be able to
keep up with it. So let's go back to Monday.
You look at scores across the region. First of all
girls basketball on Monday, Mayfield Carlisle fifty six fifty two

(09:32):
O T. I think a couple of things there, like
Mayfield's a top five team for US I'll spoil that
for the spoil that for the next segment when we
get into the power five. But Mayfield's a top five team.
We've kind of pushed Carlilet of the side, like you know,
this year, there's just no way they're gonna be in
the top five. They're gonna be on the outside looking in.

(09:52):
We've got six solid basketball teams in the region. Really
they're a part of that group, but they're not a
Power five team. They might climb into the Power five
at some point. I mean, they they forced Mayfield overtime,
and that game, by the way, was at Mayfield. Mayfield
is this is the year for Mayfield. This is the
year they're supposed to be clearing away of the all

(10:12):
a favorite. Carlo County stepped up and said, not so fast, right,
I mean, they've they've thrown some doubt into that. And
then on top of that, it shows that maybe Mayfield's
not that far ahead of that. Next grouping of that
of the Carlisle counties of the world certainly showed that.
And then I think even on top of that, it showed,

(10:34):
like you know, Carlo County that look their schedules, strength
of schedules so far Saint Mary Tillman, Obien County. These
are not great. I think Obien County was probably the
best team they played going into tonight. But Mayfield's we
think Mayfield's good. I've been told Mayfield's good, new coach,
new energy, veteran players. Lay May's one of the top
players in the region and Mayfield one in overtime fifty

(10:58):
six fifty two. I think it shows us there's gonna
be more, a little more parody on the girl's side
than we thought, just a little more. Good for Carlile,
good for Mayfield. They do get the win, they were
expected to win, but Carlile throws their hand, their hat,
their their name into the conversation as we go forward
for teams we need to respect and keep an eye on.
I don't have stats from that game. Again, that was

(11:20):
on Monday. That's fine, but that is something that stood
out for Monday on the girls side. On the boys
side again, if you look at Monday, I mean not
a lot stood out. You give coach Doss his flowers.
Murray wins that game ninety three forty three. They should have.
It was a big blowout win. It should have been.
You look at Uha they're just down this year. They're

(11:40):
just not the same as they've been in the past.
In this game, Mitchell Maddox had twenty points, Harris Moore
had eighteen points, Michael Whittt had fifteen points. I mean,
they had four guys in double figures, nearly five guys
in double figures. They shot fifty two percent from the floor,
fifty six percent from three, folks, they this is crazy.

(12:00):
They were eighteen of thirty two from three in that game.
Fifty six percent. Doesn't matter level of opponent. They knocked
down some shots. And if they're gonna be a team
in high school basketball that puts up thirty three is
a game. They're gonna be fun to watch, even if
they're not winning and making shots, because that's just fun basketball.
It's just fun. They got up a lot of shots,

(12:21):
they scored a lot of points, and they're gonna do
That's what's my saying on the show. Good teams beat
bad teams badly. UACHA is not a great team this year,
and they beat them. Then they turned around last night
beat Fulton City badly. Murray's in that conversation, but you
know what I saw Calloe tonight and I'm telling you
we're gonna get into this later, but it's gonna be
a three team. It's gonna be a fun race in

(12:43):
the fourth district. Just saying, so those are things that
stood out from Monday. Let's take a break, we'll come back,
we'll talk Tuesday, we'll talk power rankings, we'll talk Calloe,
and we'll talk it on Region one high school hoops,
on Region one sports. With that time what time is here?

(13:03):
You'll provide a time is read you one sports as
we move along here on your like again Wednesday edition
of the show, Brian your here in my pantry, just
saying it'll change and at some point, like I'm committed
to you know, we're gonna get a better microphone, We're
gonna get a better process or like, at some point

(13:25):
hopefully the audio quality of even just my voice alone
will sound much better in the future. This is just
the way we got to do it until we can
do it better. So it is what it is in
the pantry on the iPhone, recording a podcast. It's great, man,
you can't make this stuff up. All right, we talked
about Monday shows, all right, Monday scores, Let's talk Tuesday
scores and things that stood out from this very not

(13:46):
that I'm recording again, I won't have a lot of
stats to go off of, but it gives us a
good indication of what's going on. Now. Maybe if I
can find some random Twitter accounts that cover these things,
maybe I'll have a better idea. Less let's get into
things that stood out. Let's stay with boys basketball because
I'm on that page. So things that stood out. Like again,

(14:08):
I talked about Tillman on Monday. I just think it's
gonna be a tough year for them. I just think
it's gonna be tough. I mean, a sixty five forty
seven loss to Henderson Henderson County and boys basketball, they're
They're fine, They're not great. They scored sixty five on Tilman.
They've only scored forty three. Was their highest in the
first two games of the year, forty three forty now
sixty five. I just think it's gonna be a tough

(14:29):
year for Tillman. It just just is I don't know,
you know, Tillman still does have any of their stats up,
which I mean at some point just saying, but I
think it's just gonna be a tough year for Tillman. Unfortunately,
then you go down the list Marshall and Carlisle. Like
I've been high on Carlisle, they've been a power five
team to start the year. They were I don't know

(14:50):
if they will be. We'll get into that in a moment.
But Marshall just took it to them tonight. Now this
game was ad Marshall, but Marshall again, and like you
know there you want to say they're one dimensional, they're not.
The question for Marshall was would they have guys step up?
Who would that be? We thought Stokes in Jasick, we

(15:12):
thought that was the but man when those other guys
went down last year and then it kind of defaulted
to Stokes in Jazic to step up. Not on them,
they just weren't those players last year. They were role
players and then they were being asked to be more
than that and it just didn't work. It didn't look
great this summer. Reports were that didn't work. It didn't
look great for a long time. They just wasn't their role. Well,

(15:34):
now that the season started, they're starting to get into
a role. In fact, tonight again it was eighty one
to fifty four, Marshall winning over Carlisle, Langey had twenty three.
Here's the deal. He didn't have fifty percent of their
points to not right, like I said, he had that,
he's gonna have to score forty to fifty percent of
their points every single night. He didn't have that. He
had twenty three, Stokes had eighteen, Jessick had fourteen. Okay,

(15:57):
that'll work against a team that goes on end of
the season, was in our top five, not just my
top five, most people's top five. And they won big
eighty one fifty four. So if you're sinning here saying
and when we get into the power five, we'll talk
about this in a moment, but I'm here, so let's
talk about this. If you're sitting here saying, we know
everybody's chasing a kraken, who are the contenders behind them?

(16:21):
Who are the teams? Marshall is right there. I mean,
they've got an All Region Player of the year kind
of guy. They've got guys that buy in, they're well coached,
they play hard, they play to their style, they play
they make you play to their style. And if they're
gonna get twenty three, eighteen and fourteen from those guys,
and that won't happen every night. But if they're just

(16:42):
gonna get from their scoring leaders twenty three, eighteen, and
fourteen with different guys stepping up, good luck, because they're
gonna be right in that conversation the whole season. I
think they are. We talked about on Monday Show, like
teams that started off closer to what their ceiling might be,
and some teams that have a higher ceiling than they've
played so far, which is normal. Marshall may be starting

(17:04):
off closer to their ceiling. Marshall may be a gain,
not topped off, not tapped out, but they may be
closer to that that potential, that full potential to start
the year than some other teams or then we expected.
So that's one thing. One thing to keep it on.
One thing that stood out from Tuesday scores. What else
let me hold on, I'm clicking around here, get it,

(17:24):
gotta forgive me. I'm clicking around on the iPad. What
else we got? Oh, by the way, Marshall plays McCracken
tomorrow Thursday. They play McCracken Thursday. So everything I just
said about who's chasing McCracken and how that might look
and are they closer to their ceiling. We'll have a
lot of answers on Thursday, just saying it's a home
game too, Marshall, it's a home game. Unfortunately I'm busy

(17:47):
that night. I can't be there, but just saying, Marshall McCracken, Thursday,
all right, what else stood out? Saint Mary over Ballard?
N ot again. I don't have stats from this one.
I don't have It just happened. It just got reported
Ballard again. They're down like they are supposed to be down.
That is a team that is they're just not supposed

(18:09):
to be as good that They're not supposed to be
contending for a district They're not supposed to be even
sniff in the regional tournament. They graduated maybe the best
player in school history last year in Bernie, and they
come back with you know, they've got some dudes, like
some names, but it's a lot of new names. I mean,
they graduated out just Bernie. Yeah, Ike Miller's back. That's

(18:31):
the name we all know from last season. But there's
a lot of new names on this list. And they
took again a team that that we think will compete
to get back to the regional tournament or at least
be in the conversation. It took overtime for that team
to beat them. Now, I know I'll get an explanation
of that. I know I will. I'm waiting on it, coach,

(18:51):
waiting on it. I want to know what happened. I
want to know the stats. I want to know the scoring.
I want to know what happened. So I know I
know coaches listening. I know he'll send an explanation. But
you know, this is a Saint Mary team that's having
to grow up this year. They were grown up last year.
They had veterans, they had leaders, they had you know,

(19:11):
Sims was otherworldly when it came to score in the basketball.
Not that they don't have guys that can score it,
but this is a team that's going to be going
through some more growing pains this year than that team
had to endure last year. And I think this is
one of them, because this wasn't supposed to be a ballgame,
just if you just look at the pieces on the floor,
if you just look at the talent. So kudos to

(19:32):
Ballard for doing what they did. Again, this was at
the Green Palace. That's not easy place to play. But
kudos to Ballard, and this just shows the growing pains
of a young Saint Mary team who may turn around
Friday night. Listen, they may fully turn around Friday night
and take on a and even better Grapes County team
and beat them or take them to the limit. Because

(19:55):
I do think, and again stuff I wanted to get
into with the power rankings that were kind of touching
on now, I do think that's the parody of the
region this year. That's what you're going to see the
most games that make you scratch your head, games that
you go, how did that team even compete? And then
you might not think much of the team that let

(20:16):
that other team compete, and then they turn around and
do something that makes you scratch your head. So that
just may be the way it is this year. That
certainly had me scratching my head tonight. I did not
have Ballard taking Saint Mary to overtime and only losing
by two. Just didn't have it growing paints. I really
think that's what it is. I know I'll get a
better explanation, but I think that's what it is. And

(20:39):
you know, for Ballard, I mean, they're zero and two,
but that's a good sign for them. Going forward it is.
We'll see, but that certainly had me scratching a little
bit tonight, and then the game I was at and
I was gonna get into this later. Let's just get in.
Let's just stay on this for now. We'll do power
rankings in the third segment. Calloween Graves, and I'll get

(21:03):
back to the girls in a moment, but we'll stay
with the boy's side on this. I think a couple
of things. I think Graves, it's early, and you expect this.
They haven't at all. They're two and one, three games
end of the season. They have not put together three
four quarters yet. They they've really only put together two
and a half good quarters, and they've kind of just

(21:23):
survived the other quarter and a half in two of
those games to get the win. So they're doing a
lot of really good things, and then they're kind of
fading off and not able to really put it all together.
You expect that early in the year, you do, But
as coach Kimbler told me tonight in the post game,
it's also a veteran group. And as much as you

(21:44):
might expect it, as much as you might go you know,
we do kind of expect it, but like we expected.
But that keeps becoming the conversation. These guys are veterans,
they are juniors, they did play a lot last year.
They're making mistakes early in the season. We didn't think
they'd make early in the season. But they're getting wins

(22:07):
and they're looking like again a top three four team
in this region. Did a lot of things well tonight,
and that brings me to Callaway. Callaway is better than
they should be. Callaway is better than we thought they
would be. Saint Mary's coach, Coach Deinston, he kind of
told me that to start the year, and I did
believe him, but I didn't really believe him like I

(22:28):
believed him, but I went and I don't have to
see for myself. They they're, you know, in that same boat.
They've got a lot of juniors and a couple of seniors,
but they're all guys that kind of had to wait
their turn and now they're getting their turn. And there's
just more talent out there than you realize. And they
play really hard. You know. A couple of years ago,
like two years ago, kind of the knock on that

(22:50):
Callaway team was they didn't play as hard as they
could sometimes their level of play just didn't always match
their talent. Last year that they they turned it on
because they were seniors and they figured it out and
they kind of picked it up and they shook off
missing the regional tournament to then go win the region.
Last year. This team plays hard and they kind of

(23:10):
play above their talent. And I don't mean they're not
good players. I don't mean they don't have talent, but
they play harder sometimes. And I saw that tonight, then
maybe their talent would indicate they should play or better
than they should play. They shoot the ball really well,
they buy in defensively, they rebound. Luke Armstrong's a load.
There were not times tonight that it just made me go,

(23:31):
that's as close to Jonah Butler as you can get.
The year after he graduates. He had a deep three
to night, made a couple outside shots, if anything. And
I'm not a coach, so I mean I knocked me
for this if you want. I thought there were several
possessions that Armstrong didn't get enough touches or a touch,

(23:51):
and it didn't mean that they didn't make shots without
him touching the basketball. I was just surprised. There was
so many possessions, especially when they made a comeback that
he kind of didn't feel like a factor. Some of that.
Now he made his presence thone. He had twenty plus
points in this game. He's averaging a double double. You know,
I'm not putting that on him. I'm just saying there
were times down the floor where he kind of went
did he even touch the ball? Because when he did,

(24:13):
big things happen for them, and it opened up the
floor for other guys. But he's a load man like
he is gonna be trouble for somebody in the way
that Ames was playing, the way that Strickly came off
the bench and gave them a lift, the way those
other guards Weatherford and Lanier like they just buy in
and play their role and make shots like you know,
Jones running the point. They are better then they probably

(24:35):
should be and then expected. And a lot of that
is credit to their coach. A lot of that is
credit to how hard they play. And they do shoot
the ball well, and that's gonna be a dangerous combo.
When you shoot that well, play that hard, you're gonna
turn heads. And they did tonight, and kudos to them.
Craves had them down by like ten in the second half,

(24:56):
had them down early, and they just kind of kept
coming back. They never led the game, but they tied
it a couple of times, and then Graves kind of
got up again. Looked like they were gonna put up
seven with a couple of minutes to go, and then
all of a sudden, you look up and Graves is
scratching to hold off and get the win. And they did.
And again, that's just kudos to Calloway for not going away,
not saying quit, not not throwing in the talent, playing

(25:17):
again harder than their talent sometimes suggests they should play.
So that was on the boy's side again. The takeaway
is they are better than expected to start the year
and they are gonna be a problem the fourth district.
I thought going into the season. I'm not alone, but
I thought going into the season, it's Marshall's district. Even
though they're kind of down, Murray's kind of up. They'll

(25:40):
probably it'll be probably Marshall and Murray and Calloway's kind
of down this year. I know they got Armstrong, but
just might be a different district. Nope, that's a three
team race, and honestly, I still see Marshall as the
best team in that district or the favorite, but Calloway
ain't going nowhere. So this is gonna be an interesting
district once that fourth is gonna be so tough once

(26:01):
again in boys basketball, Now onto the girl's side. Kudos
to Graves. Graves came out. Graves played not pretty basketball
in the first week, and again, a lot of role players, veterans,
but a lot of role players that are kind of
having to learn a new role, having to learn like
if I don't score, we don't score. If I don't

(26:23):
look for a shot and we ain't getting a shot up.
So you know, when you're a senior and you've gone
your whole career basically being a deferred player, basically deferring
to somebody else and only scoring when it was like Okay,
I'm open, I can take that shot, or I'm it's
hard to take. To go into your senior year and
just go give me the ball, I'm gonna like change

(26:43):
that mentality. You haven't been trained physically and on the
mentality side to be at that point, I don't care
how much basketball you've played. When you've played a role
and those seniors have for their entire career behind that
group that graduated last year. It's it's hard to just
step up and go, Okay, my year, my turn. And
I thought they came out and they they started to

(27:05):
show that they're gonna transform a little bit better this
season than the first week show, because the first week
showed this could be a tough year. And I thought
tonight they came up. Listen, neither team made shots early,
then Graves made shots. They came out. They were up
nine to nothing early in nine to zero run. Then
Callaway responded, I'm gonna get to Calloween in a moment.

(27:28):
But Graves had a leader at least was in the
ball game all the way to halftime, I think, trailed
by two and a half and then ended up losing
by twelve. I thought going into the game, and I'm
gonna get killed by my Graves peeps, but I'm gonna
say it. I thought going into the game, based on
how Callawai played the first week and how Graves played
the first week, I thought, if we just keep this
to a twenty point game, that like, we can live

(27:50):
with that and figure out if we can get better
as the season goes on. They're gonna they're gonna They're
gonna run us tonight if we don't make shots, they're
gonna run us tonight if we play like we did
last week. And credit to our girls. They came out,
Graves girls, they came out and they played really well. Early,
played really hard the entire game, had a really good
game plan and it worked most of the game. And

(28:11):
Early the difference. And this is getting me to the
Callaway County talking point. Early Calloway really only had Sailor
Low scoring. And I've said on this show before, even
if Graves is a little down this year, even if
Marshall's a little like, even if like Callaway is the
favorite and they're one in the region and those other
teams are two and three and there is and I

(28:33):
think there is a gap there. It won't be there
long if it's just Sailor Low and Jayden Coke or
Sailor Low or Jayden cut Like, it won't be there
long if just one of those players is scoring. And
early it was just like at halftime, the only two
players to score were Low in Coke and they had
a two point lead, and that's mostly because Coke finally
kind of got some points there at the end of

(28:53):
the second half or second quarter. The difference in the
third quarter and fourth quarter. Emery made shots, Haynes made shots,
Perkins made shots like other players got involved. Then the
defense started having to respect those players. Then Coke scored
a little more. Then Lowe was able to get more
shots to fall, and it became more of what I said, honestly,

(29:17):
not just me, but others said, had to happen. You
can't just be a dynamic duo. Honestly, it really can't
just be a trio. When you can get three players
scoring and others contributing, you're gonna be dangerous. First half
didn't have it. It was a ballgame. It was you
know again, Graves should have had a lead, but it
was a ball game. Second half, three players stepped up

(29:39):
and really started to score, more got involved and started
aiding that, and they pulled away in one by twelve.
And that'll be the difference all season. Callaway will be
the clear cut favorite and girls basketball when they play
like they did in that second half, because they did
get a really good effort from Graves tonight. Now Graves
on their end like like you don't want to put

(30:01):
it on them, because again she's been kind of a
role player. But Ella Kemp's gotta look for a shot.
Ella Kemp didn't score it, not until I don't even
know if she scored at all. But you know, they
had two players in double figures. They have to have
three and double figures because they're not gonna score twenty
twenty and ten. It's gonna be ten, ten and eleven
like it's gonna be. But they're gonna have to get

(30:21):
three and double figures to even get into these situations
where they have a shot to win. And tonight they
just could not get a third player going. They had
some players step up. Carly Goatley came close, and by
the way she had it was really cool to see
to not because you had Sailor Low and Carly Goatlee
kind of guarding each other and matching up with each other,
and Low got the best of her. But Low's the

(30:41):
grizzled veteran. She's at the end of that high school
career where Goatly is what sigular Low was kind of
four years ago. She's right at the beginning. A lot
of potential, a lot of talent, a lot of length,
a lot of things that she can do that others can't.
But just early in that career, veteran versus the rookie
was kind of a fun matchup tonight. But yeah, I mean,

(31:02):
Golli did some good things. But again, Graves is gonna
have to have more Callaway Again they play like it
in the second half, they win the region. They might
have these games like tonight, but they're gonna win the
region because going into it the way the first week went,
I was worried about my Lady Eagles. Lady Eagles gave
me more hope for the season, and Callaway showed what

(31:24):
they can be at full strength in that second half.
All right, let's take a break. We'll come back. Power five.
It's coming on. You were listening to the Region one
Sports Report on ninety nine to five the Fan. It's
some barsmell World in the Winner. When the snowl comes
to cover ground, it's a time for preaching one sports.

(31:46):
All right, here we go our final segment on your
Wednesday edition of the show. And by the way, if
you've been listening to the whole show, and I hope
that you have, I've been recording in my pantry. I
just found my wife's little mini Reese's pieces or I
guess little mini cups. So there's that, just saying it's late,
I've had a long day. She might not have any

(32:08):
of these left when she gets up tomorrow, just saying,
all right, power rankings on your middle of the week show.
So I kind of talked about Callaway and I talked
about Graves, and we'll get back into that in a moment,
but let's start on the girl's side, because I do
think it's a little more clear cut, a little more
more defined. And by the way, I didn't get to
talk about Cracking a night. My Cracking lost girls Basketball

(32:30):
to Critten and crittenin Marshall beat crittin In. So we'll
kind of get into that in a moment, but that
kind of shows where the region is. So on the
girl's side, it's Callaway number one. You know, even if
Graves had won tonight, I don't that wouldn't have leaped
Graves to number one, but it would have certainly closed
the gap. Because we're just too early in the season

(32:50):
to see that happen right now. But Callaway again first
half showed if they play like that, they might have
some trouble with Marshall with Graves later on in the season.
Second half showed if they play like that, they're gonna
win the region. They're the number one team right now
in girls basketball, and they probably will be most all
of the season. It'll be interesting to see what happens
when they play Graves again. It'll be interesting to see

(33:11):
what happens if they play Marshall, but they'll probably be
number one most of the season. So they're number one.
Number two is Marshall, the Lady Marshall's right now, they're
just again, you know, they're two to zero. And I'll
say this and I'll keep saying it. Best duo in
the region is at Callaway. When they get other players
to step up and score, they're gonna be dangerous. Best

(33:32):
pure starting lineup in the regions at Marshall, most depth
when they're healthy is at Graves, and I think we
saw that tonight. Graves is not also fully healthy. They
really only have about seven players right now. They can
roll with the Cassidy out. They just got tubs back,
but she's not one hundred percent. They're just not just
not there yet. But that's kind of how the region is.

(33:54):
Callaway at one, Marshal at two, Graves at three, and
I'm fairly confident we'll see a combination of that all year.
Coming in at number four is this week the Mayfield Cardinals.
Lady Cardinals sorry two and zero in Carlisle County did
take them to the brink, but they are unbeaten in
the first week of the season, and they do have

(34:17):
Callaway coming up on Friday, so we'll see where the
separation is there, because I do think and we'll talk
about it when our fifth team comes up in a minute.
You break the region into tiers. You've got Callaway and
Tier one, You've got Graves Marshall in Tier two, then
you've got our number four team, Mayfield with McCracken and
Tier three. And I think there's a little bit of

(34:41):
separation in Tier one and two, maybe a little less
separation between two and three, but a little and then
a decent not great, but decent gap between one and three.
And we'll see on Friday. But right now Mayfield comes
in at number four. Then at number five is McCracken County,

(35:02):
and that's really just because Mayfield's unbeaten. McCracken's starting off
two and two. Although McCracken has played some teams Henderson
County is no joke. They lost to them on the road,
then they go on the road to critten County. I
mean again, McCracken County goes to Crittenen County. Critton County
is good. They're only lost this year at ten point,
lost to Marshall and they beat McCracken County fifty six

(35:24):
forty nine to night. So I'm not trying to not
like again, if you're talking about the region in tiers,
there's no separation within the tiers. One Callaway two, you know,
Marshall and Graves, three, McCracken, and Mayfield. I think I
think head to head, McCracken's better than Mayfield. Will see,
we'll see. But that's just where they stack up right now,
early in the season. One Callaway two, Marshall three, Graves four,

(35:49):
Mayfield five McCracken. That's this week in girls basketball. And
then to their credit, Carlo County's right in the mix.
They're right there, They're right there. That really may be
the six truly good teams in the region this year,
but they're right there. That's girls basketball. On the boys side,
this gets a little harder. Not at number one. Number

(36:10):
one is it's clear it's McCracken County. It's McCracken County.
Now they've got a monster matchup Thursday night with Marshall,
but right now it's McCracken two and zero in the season.
The best team they've played so far as Fairdale. Their
third game of the year will be against Marshalls, so
it'll be interesting to see. How, you know, long week

(36:31):
of waiting to play the Marshalls. I do think they're better.
I think they'll show it Thursday night. But two and
on the year, and they just kind of have something
at every position. They just have something at every position.
They've got a true score in Woodford eighteen and a
half a game. Aaron Adams has been a pleasant surprise,
seventeen a game, Garrett Miller at twelve a game. Klope

(36:52):
is coming on. He's got seven a game, that'll be
double figures. I think what will happen is I think
Adams numbers will go down, clubs will go up, but
then you'll see some combination of those four guys leading
them just about every night and probably in various orders,
but it'll be those four guys. They just have more scoring,
even in their starting lineup than other teams deadly. Are

(37:14):
the McCracken County Mustangs two and zero to start the year,
they're number one, and by the way, they're in Tier one,
they're alone. Then you go to Tier two and number
two for me this week right now, because they are unbeaten,
are the Marshall County Marshals. Marshall's unbeaten. They've played good teams,
they've handled business, they've scored a lot of points. They've

(37:36):
got one of the best players in the region. Right now.
You know, Langy scored twenty three, so his average will
come down, but going into tonight he was averaging thirty
four points a game and they're getting two other guys
in double figures. Now there's a big drop off after that.
I mean it's Langy Jesk Stokes. I think Graves is
more balanced. I think they have more guys that can score.
They showed it tonight. But when those guys did win,

(37:59):
Langy scored thirty and that like good luck. So Marshal's
at number two this week, Graves at number three, and
again Graves lost the game they were supposed to. I
don't normally punish teams for that, but if Marshall's undefeated
and Graves has got a loss. You flip them around,
but Tier one is McCracken, Tier two is Marshall and Graves,

(38:21):
and Graves coming in at number three. My Eagles have
looked good again. They just haven't put together, you know,
the quarters yet. They just haven't put together that complete game.
But when they do, look out, because man, they are fast,
they're quick, they move the ball. They're well coached. Like tonight,
you know that's the thing too. And I want to
say this, tonight was the first time it felt like

(38:42):
Graves County basketball in a long time. You know, they
haven't won a game in the regional tournament, not a
first round game. They have not won a game in
the regional tournament since twenty eighteen. Well, it felt like
those teams, at least it felt like pre twenty eighteen.
They play hard, they get on the floor, they're coached hard,

(39:04):
they get after you defensively, they try to slow things
down in the right time. They try to they let
their guys run when they need to. Like that was
Graves County basketball. They're gonna be fun. They're at number three,
at number four, and this is where things get interesting.
I mean, it's This is where things get interesting, because,
to be honest, I think you have three or four

(39:26):
teams competing for this spot, just being honest. But here's
the deal, and here's what I'm going And I don't
know why somebody might want to text me and explain this.
They played a team from Tennessee on Friday night. It's
off the KHSAA. Now. Their stats show they played to
you know, played three games so far this season, counting
the Graves County game, but it's only showing a one

(39:48):
in one record. But I'm gonna go with Cali County
here because they did beat Saint Mary at Saint Mary
to start the year. Going into night, I thought they
were two and zero. I think they're two and one,
but I don't know. I'm confused by this. I don't
know why it's not on the website anymore. But nonetheless,
let's count it because they did play it. I know
that they're two and one and they lost by one

(40:11):
point on the road to Graves County in a game
that they got down by double digits and could have
you know, laid an egg could have just rolled over
at that point, and to their credit, they didn't. Some
I won't go Callaway County at number four and then
at number five, and here's the deal. I'm gonna move
Murray back into the spot. Murray comes in at number five.
So Murray comes in at five. You look at them

(40:31):
two and one on the season. Guys can score, they
get up and down, they take a lot of shots,
they make a lot of shots. We'll see what they
do against some of these top teams. But for now,
and for sake of argument and for sake of I
have to have five teams. They're at number five. Carli
County on the outside looking in this week, Saint Mary
on the outside looking in right now. I think those

(40:52):
two teams are certainly competing for a spot. I think
Tillman's not as good as as we thought they could be,
at least not early. Mayfield hasn't played anybody yet. We'll
see how that goes. When they played Hopkinsville to a
one point game, hopkins Viille force Graves in overtime, So
think that bolds well for Mayfield, But we need to
see more out of them. And I think that's really
the best of your your teams in the region right now.

(41:15):
So number one Tier one McCracken County number two and
three in tier two is Graves and Marshall, and then
in tier three you would have number four, Callaway, number five,
Murray on the bubble, Carlisle on the bubble, Saint Mary,
and probably Mayfield in that conversation. So I think, I

(41:35):
think this region is deep, and I think you're gonna
I mean, look look at what Balor did with Saint
Mary tonight. Look at what like you can't take a
night off even if you feel like your opponent's inferior
to you this season, You better bring it. These coaches
know each other too well, they know their kids too well.
They I don't even think you have to scout anymore.
You at least know the personnel well enough to know

(41:57):
how you want to play them that you might scout
to go see what they're running new, what they're doing different,
what they how they're trying to use guys. But this
region knows itself too well. You better bring it. You
better be ready to play. But that's how I see it,
That's how things stack up for me. All Right, I'm tired,
my voice is going. I'm I'm just I'm wore out.

(42:22):
It's been a long day. I really truly appreciate you,
the listener, and the you that text me five five
four forty three oh eight. Hope you've enjoyed it, Enjoy
the games the next few nights. We'll talk more on
Friday or for Friday Show. Until then, I hope you've
enjoyed This has been Region one
