Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five the Fan and away we
go and welcome in. This is your Monday, December first
edition of the Region one Sports Report. I'm Brian Yorke.
I hope you are doing well on this chilly Monday.
It's also not looking good weather wise. We'll kind of

(00:28):
mention that more in a moment, but here we are.
I survived Thanksgiving and the weekend and Black Friday. Hopefully
you had a fantastic Thanksgiving. Hopefully you had a fantastic weekend.
Hopefully you bought a lot of things and saved a
lot of money with those Black Friday and deals and
everything that was going on. And you survived, and you've

(00:49):
enjoyed your time, and you've eased back into your work
week ready to go. Because that's where we are. I
had a great Thanksgiving. Thanks for asking survive my first
Black Friday at the mall, which was not what I
thought it would be and yet a little more intense
than I thought it would be. It's a weird it's
a weird feeling, but I got through it, got through

(01:12):
the first one. I had a lot of fun as
the day went on and saw a lot of people
and got to talk to a lot of people, talk
to a few fans of Region one sports, which was
always kind of fun, you know when you're at the
new job and you're talking about talking about this, talking
about sports. Always fun. And got to see a lot
of people on Friday. Great weekend and now here we

(01:32):
are ready to go for a brand new week and oh,
by the way, basketball season starts today. I mean here
we are, my goodness, so much that we have to
get into. So here's the deal. Here's what's on the
docket for the show today. Tillman season comes to an end.
We'll talk about that as they fall in the semi
finals to Franklin Simpson, as Franklin Simpson gets their revenge

(01:56):
from last season's championship game. But Murray survives, that's the
key word. They survive and they advance and they will
play for a three A state championship. So we'll talk
about their games on Friday night, and we'll get you
ready for basketball season because it is here day one,
Game one of the basketball season for US. Some teams

(02:18):
gets underway today, many more are scheduled to play tomorrow,
weather permitting, and then just to you in case you
didn't know all week long, it's gonna be a busy week.
So we'll talk football, we will preview basketball, we'll talk
about the games that are coming up tonight and tomorrow
night and give you all we can on those games
as we get into it. It is that fun time

(02:40):
of the season. Everybody's record, oh and oh, and everybody
with a lot of hope and a lot of just
looking forward to a lot of fun in this basketball season.
And so without further ado, we'll do that thing we do,
we talk high school sports. We're gonna get right into
it today. We're gonna start with Murray. They win, They survived.

(03:02):
That is the key word. That's the word I used
before I even read Steve Springer's article in the Murray
Ledger in Times, and then that's the word he used. Survive.
They did. They went to win on the road, and
they got a semi final win, and they overcame a
disastrous rough, tough third quarter. They didn't get to put

(03:22):
up the sort of numbers you expect them to put
up on offense. They they kind of had to change
the game plan. They kind of adjusted on the fly.
They went to the ground game. They went to the
you know, the attack on the on the ground and
and it's what worked, and it got them to win,
and it got them to the state championship game. Let's
share from mister Springer's article in the Murray Ledger and Times.

(03:45):
He said, if last week's Murray High football drama was
on enough to get the blood pressure up, remember that
he's talking about that overtime win. The Tigers amped up
the excitement even more in another Friday night thriller. Murray
needed every bit of junior running back Gage Chapman's two
hundred and six rushing yard performance to catch that two
hundred and six rushing yard performance a few breaks, to

(04:08):
survive maybe the most gut wrenching single quarter experience in
the third quarter to power through a twenty seven to
twenty win over host Lloyd Memorial in the semi finals
of the Class three A playoffs. All right, so let
me just set this up for you. Like I said,
tilmand lost, Murray won. Murray wins their game twenty seven
to twenty over Lloyd Memorial. They did not go to

(04:29):
the air. It was not the air raid that we've
seen from Murray most of the season. It was not
going through the air. It was not Robbins to Isaiah Martin.
It wasn't kind of what we've been accustomed to. Murray
had to go to the ground. Murray had to go
to Gage Chapman, the junior running back, and get this,
seventeen carries for two hundred and six yards. The most

(04:52):
amazing thing is he didn't score a touchdown. I don't
know how, I don't know why, but he didn't get
a touchdown out of seventeen carries and two hundred and
six six yards. Now, their touchdowns, all three offensive touchdowns
came on the ground. They had one rushing score from
Simon Rickman, who had six carries sixty one yards. Whyatt
Robbins the quarterback had eight scrambles for twenty one yards

(05:14):
at a touchdown, and Isaiah Martin, who did it on
the ground, six carries twenty one yards and a touchdown.
In fact, it was the pass game for Murray that
was not what we're accustomed to. Robbins six of thirteen,
he had one interception, no touchdowns in just sixty nine
yards of passing offense. That's crazy, that's crazy. It is

(05:35):
because that's not what we've seen. But credit to Murray
because then we're going to get back to the article.
In a moment, they had to adjust, They had to
change the game plan. They had to go away from
their strength, which was really kind of a balanced attack
that was lean heavy on the pass game, lean heavy
on getting guys into space, lean heavy on their senior
gunner quarterback, and their their top dude, Martin and some

(05:58):
others to get it done. And instead they had to
come up with other ways to move the football and
win the football game. And they did. That's how you
win a state championship, by the way, That's how you
make a run like this. You don't just stick to
your guns. You go, Okay, that's not working. Let's go
with what we can do. Then it was run the football.
Let's get back to the article. It says opening the

(06:20):
gates to make way for the school's first championship appearance
in over three decades. The game started like almost every
Tiger game this season, business as usual. Just over three
minutes into the game, and after a typically dominant, efficient
offensive drive, senior quarterback White Robins scrambled for a five
yard touchdown run and Murray was up seven nothing. Just
like that, the Juggernauts. Remember that's the mascot for Lord Memorial.

(06:42):
The Juggernauts would answer with a drive of their own,
almost finishing off the first quarter when Lloyd quarterback Caleb
Evans would find sophomore running back Lincoln Tomlinson for a
one yard touchdown pass, but the point after would fell.
Murray clonged to a seven to six lead with fifty
one seconds remaining the opening period. Now he goes onto
the article, Chapman would break off a big run heading

(07:04):
into the second quarter. The drive would eventually stall. Senior
kicker Hank Franzo would drill a thirty yard field goal
to extend Murray's lead ten to six. With eight fifty
eight left in the first half, the Tigers Braylan Patterson
would recover a muff kickoff on the following play. The
Tigers were ready to pounce quickly, as they have on
all just about all the parade this season. Following a

(07:27):
forty three yard pass from Robbins to senior receiver Josh Bridges,
Junior senior runner back Simon Rickman would score a one
yard run to put Murray up seventeen to six. After
another pat So here you are Murray has not only scored,
they've scored a few times. They've got a field goal,
they've recovered a muff kick, then they've pounced again. They're
up on the road. Keep that in mind. On the

(07:49):
road seventeen to six. As the first half is sort
of coming to a close. He goes on to the article,
the Tigers roared their way back into the locker room
with all the momentum generate about Chapman and Rickman running
all over Lloyd defense to the tune of one hundred
and seventy four yards rushing. By halftime, another stout defensive performance.
But then the wheels fell off. And this is where

(08:12):
you know. I checked in a little before halftime. I
saw the score being what it was, seventeen to six,
and I went, WHOA, Murray went on the road. Murray's winning.
Murray's gonna win this football game. That was my first thought.
I checked in, saw it got to halftime, Okay, I
checked out. I checked back in somewhere in the middle
of the third quarter, and I went, WHOA, Murray's gonna

(08:32):
lose this football game. So let's get into it. Usually
the Tigers are the ones doing the boding, but in
what might be go down is one of the worst
seven minute stretch of football and Tiger football lore. Misfortune
bit the Tigers hard. I mean he just has away
with words and phrases. After junior quarterback Colin Winners intercepted

(08:52):
in Evans pass to end the Juggernaut opening drive inside
the Tiger ten yard line and then teams swamping punts,
everything went wrong for the Tigers. Robbins would scramble toward
the right side halfway through the quarter and would be
slung awkwardly out of bounds of the Juggernaut sideline and
would then have to be carried back across the field
of the Tigers sideline. From that moment forward, one would

(09:16):
be hard pressed to see a momentum switch any bigger.
In a game, Freshman quarterback Kenyon Cunningham would sub end
for the injured Robins, but the drive would end with
Fronz of penning the Juggernauts back at their own two
yard line in the shadow of their own goal post.
Most teams would run, run, run, and then punt their
way out of the troubles situation. Not Lloyd Memorial, However,

(09:36):
on their first play, the dangerous situation of this dangerous situation.
Evans would throw over the top Murray defense to a
wide open Colton Barger, the sophomore receiver, would snag the
ball and outrace every Tiger defender ninety eight yards to
pull Lloyd Memorial to within seventeen to twelve. After a
successful two point conversion to make the game seventeen to

(09:57):
fourteen with five point forty two left in the the
get this four thousand seat cecil Ds Memorial Stadium had
exploded in excitement. The Jugger Nuts had the Tigers by
the jugular and could fill it again. I mean, Springer
just paints with words. So there's the situation. Let's recap
for a moment Murray's up quarterback goes down. Momentum switches.

(10:21):
I've seen that Graves County was on the road at
Murray early in the season, had momentum, had a play
called back on a penalty, and then the next play lost.
Reagan matthis for the rest of the season, and that
penalty plus injury ended up just sweeping momentum back to
the Tigers in that game. I've seen it. I've seen

(10:43):
what those kind of moments can have. Can you know
the effect they can have on a team, and here
it seemed to have a little bit of an effect
on Murray. When they lost Robbins, he goes down. Murray
has an opportunity. They've got, you know, the Juggernauts ninety
eight yards from their end zone. Okay, like, just just
hold tight, hold up, You'll be fine. And then they

(11:04):
go ninety eight yards on one play to score and
get it to a three point game. Here we go, though,
we're not done. Fourteen seconds later, Cunningham would regroup the
Tigers to stop the bleeding, but would take the first
shotgun snap of the next drive around toward the left
side line, only to see the ball knocked out of
his grasp to be recovered by Lloyd at the Tiger

(11:25):
thirty yard line. Less than two minutes later, the Juggernauts
would surf the momentum to grab a twenty to seventeen
lead of their own, when Evans would use his linemen
in front of him to plow through Murray's line on
a one yard quarterback keeper into the end zone. You
with me. Murray led seventeen to six going at a
halftime in the third quarter. In about seven minutes, they

(11:47):
now trail twenty to seventeen. This is when I checked
back in. I had to get caught up. I checked in,
saw the score went WHOA, what happened? Get caught up?
And I immediately immediately thought, Okay, there's no way they
win this game on the road, trailing in the third
quarter of the semi finals against that good of an opponent.
It's been a great season, Murray, but it's coming to

(12:09):
an end. Let's get back to the article. Things seem
to have gone from bad to worse to terrible for
head coach Melvin Cunningham squad and in an antagonizing seven
minute odyssey. After not just leading the game but effectively
controlling the game, to seeing your state leading stat stuffing
quarterback and receiver go down a deflating ninety eight yards

(12:32):
soul crushing touchdown Haymaker and a turnover, losing the lead.
The Tigers were in the worst valley of the season.
I just said that. He just said it better. But
I did just say that. But every odyssey has a hero,
a hero by committee. In Murray's case, Here's where things
turn back around for Murray. Like not many freshmen would
be able to do, Cunningham would pull himself back up

(12:55):
to the figure off the figurative turf and complete a
forty seven yarder to fellow freshmen Braylan Patterson, and would
get all the way down to the juggernaut eleven yard
line before being forced out of bounds near the end
of the quarter, just twenty second seven seconds into the
final quarter and hanging on down twenty to seventeen, Senior
receiver Isaiah Martin would take over, taking snaps in the

(13:17):
wildcat formation, lab a nine yard rainbow pass over the
line to Rickman, who would come up just a yard
short of the goal line. Martin would then take the
next snap through the Lloyd line into the end zone,
and Murray successfully showed the gritty resiliency they have shown
on multiple occasions this season when it mattered the most,
given the Tigers a twenty four to twenty lead with

(13:37):
eleven thirty remaining in the football game. Still, though that's
a lot of time, he says, the offense had defied
the odds when it probably could have easily mailed it in.
Now it was the defense's turn. On the promising ensuing
Juggernaut drive, Lloyd Memorial would drive past midfield and encroach
on the Tiger red zone six plays later, but just

(13:58):
like the offense stepped up, the defense once again, like
many times a season, said watch this, Murray would force
Barger to cough up the football and the Tigers Jackson
would fall on it and the Juggernaut's rally would be
drop dead in its tracks. Two plays later, and with
arms like a vice grip, Chapman would barrel through the
Juggernaut defense for a sixty yard outburst that ended on

(14:19):
the Lloyd Memorial four yard line. The Juggernaut defense would bend,
not break, and force Fronzo to split the upright, so
they clutched twenty yard field goal to give the Tigers
a twenty seven to twenty lead with six twenty two
remaining in the football game. And you get the just
they go on to win. You know, you know the
end result twenty seven to twenty ends up being your final.

(14:40):
As I said, you look at the stats, Murray, total
you gotta give. Total ended up with one hundred and
thirty yards passing eight to fifteen combined, no touchdowns, one interception.
Rushing the football total forty five carries, three hundred and
thirty eight yards, and three offense touchdowns. Defensively, they did

(15:02):
have two interceptions in this football game. Neither led to
a score clearly, but defensively they did hold. They did
some things very well. Now what did they give up?
What did Lloyd Memorial do well against this Murray team. Well,
they passed the football. You go look at the Juggernaut
stats on that evening. They were sixteen of twenty nine
passing two touchdowns, two interceptions, two hundred and eighty four yards.

(15:25):
They only ran the football thirteen times for fifty yards
in a touchdown. Not sure why they didn't try to
go to the ground a little bit more, but it
is what it is. Murray gets the win. Murray moves on.
Who does Murray have next? Cal Christian Academy Louisville. If
Lloyd Memorial is the Juggernauts by mascot name the Centurions

(15:50):
of cal Christian Academy, they're the Juggernaut, They're the one,
They're the favorite, they have been all season, and they
are going to be in this game. We'll talk about
this later though. Let's take a break, will come back,
We've got more. It's Region one and there were some
things going on in sports today that will make your
brain fall out of your skull. You were listening to
the Region one Sports Report on ninety nine to five

(16:12):
the fan, Nice nice Reagon one Sports. As we roll along,
get along and move along here on this Monday edition
of the show, talking a little football, recapping Friday nights
semi final games in the three A and soon to

(16:34):
be four A playoffs. We'll get to that in a moment.
But Murray wins, they survive, they advance, they get the
true juggernaut in Christian Academy Louisville. Christian Academy Louisville has
had no problems in the postseason. They beat Mercer County
in round one fifty four to seven, beat De Celles
in round two forty eight three, Union County forty eight

(16:55):
to seven, and Bell County fifty six twenty so they
have not been Yes that Murray has sort of an
advantage Murray. Now we'll break this down more and give
our thoughts and predictions and keys to the game later
in the week, but just kind of looking at who
Murray does have on Friday night. I'm sorry, I don't
even know if it's Friday night. I'm assuming no, it's
it's Saturday noon on Saturday, So keep that in mind.

(17:19):
But we'll break it down more later this week. Looking
though at the Centurions, they throw the football as a
team at two hundred and seventy four yards per game.
Get this though, fifty five touchdowns one interception. Now their quarterback,
their starting quarterback is a sophomore, Jackson Burke, a sophomore
who has thrown thirty two hundred and two yards forty

(17:41):
eight touchdowns in one interception this season. That's insane. They
run the football as a team at one hundred and
twenty seven yards per game, thirty two rushing touchdowns. Tyree Stoner,
a senior, has seven hundred and fifty two yards rushing
and twenty rushing touchdowns. He's not even the leading rusher.
That goes to Vesanna, who is also a senior. Seven

(18:03):
hundred and seventy one rushing yards with six touchdowns twenty
and six. These things are I mean, one guy has
more yards, the other guy has, you know, fourteen more
rushing touchdowns. That's insane. Receiving the football, they have two
thousand yard receivers, both are juniors, Jay Hide Brown and
gains Howard Brown a thirteen hundred and seventy six yards

(18:26):
on the season, twenty two touchdowns and Howard one thousand
yards fourteen touchdowns. So you see right there, Murray more
than has their hands full in this football game. But again,
we'll break it down talk about it more later. But
Murray in the three A Championship, Tillman short of making
it to the four A Championship. Now, yes, I know

(18:49):
I said they failed to Franklin Simpson earlier. That's not
the case. It's Franklin County. Forgive me. It gets a
little confusing, especially, you know when you got a bunch
of Franklins involved. But Tillman did fall in our state's
capital Friday night, twenty one to fourteen, ends up being
your final Tillman falling short in a revenge game for

(19:12):
Franklin County from a season ago in the state title game. Now,
I don't have Tilman stats in this game. Again, I
don't always hold that against teams when it's only been
a couple of days. But you know, if they had won,
I bet those stats would be up, just saying, just
saying that's true. But the Flyers did win. Let's look
at the Flyers' stats in this football game. What they

(19:32):
did to the Tillman defense. Again, not a high outscoring
performance from the Flyers just twenty one points, but they
had one hundred and nine yards passing in the football
game thirteen of twenty one for their sophomore quarterback, who
had one pick in one touchdown. As a team, they
had forty eight carries for one hundred and forty two
yards and two rushing touchdowns. That's not great, but it

(19:54):
got the job done. Three offensive touchdowns is all that
they needed. Again, they did have two in on defense
in this football game and one defensive sack, So that
much we know about the Flyers of Franklin County. You know,
if you look at it. Tilman gave up twenty seven

(20:14):
points to Logan County last week and won forty eight
twenty seven, so it's not unusual for teams to be
able to score on Tilman. Graves County scored fourteen on
them earlier in the year, Logan County scored twenty seven
on them. Twice this season, Mayfield scored twenty nine, Madisonville
beat them, scoring twenty five, and McCracken County scored twenty eight.
So they defensively never gave up more than twenty nine

(20:36):
points in a single game all season, so they were
great all year. They were great again in this one,
again holding their opponent to twenty one, but it was
by far their lowest offensive output of the year at
fourteen points. In fact, the lowest of the season came
in that loss to Madisonville on September eleventh. They had
scored at least twenty eight points excuse me, twenty eight

(20:57):
points in every game since then, and scored at least
thirty points in all but one game since then. So
again it came down to how good Franklin County's defense was,
and it was really good to hold them to those
twelve points. Now, according to reports, and according to the
article I read, Tillman did take a seven to nothing

(21:18):
lead early in that football game. Franklin County would come
back in tis you had a seven to seven game.
Tillman then got a score to go up fourteen to seven.
Of course, that was the last score that they would have,
as they got out scored fourteen to seven after that
to end up losing the game. So Tilman season does
come to an end on the year, finishing twelve and two,

(21:39):
and again, a lot of seniors on this team they'll loose,
but a lot of guys will be back. I mean,
if you think Tilman won't be a top three, top
four team in for a football going into the season,
if you don't think they don't have a shot to
get back to this weekend or even beyond again next year,
you're not paying attention. Because they still got talent, they're

(22:00):
still good, and there's still a lot of college prospects
on that team. So they're not going anywhere now. Franklin
County won the game, they stay unbeaten. They get Bull
County in the championship, a one lost Bull County team
that of course is coming up this weekend. So there
you go. There's football. Now. If you want more on

(22:21):
this again, when we have stats from Tillman, we'll kind
of look at that again later this week. But on
Wednesday we'll start breaking down Murray's game. I'll start to
you know, I'll kind of try together some articles from
around the state and see if we've got any scouting
reports we can give you on cal and what lies
ahead for Murray. But we'll get into that more on Wednesday. Okay. Now,

(22:44):
in a way, we shift gears. Now we turn our
attention to what starts today. Football is wrapping up Tillman
season's over, Murray's got one more game of the state
title game. Football is wrapping up. Basketball starts today. So
here's what I'm gonna do. We're gonna close this segment
up a little short. I'm gonna give you today and

(23:04):
tomorrow's schedule, and then we'll come back in this in
the final segment and we'll kind of talk about of
those games, what we're looking forward to of those games,
what we you know, what questions we have, what are
the answers we're seeking, and are we gonna find any
of that in the first two nights. So here is
the schedule. I gotta pull it back up here, here

(23:25):
we go, So we'll go. We'll do boys first. That's
who I listened first. So for tonight, boys basketball, you've
got Calloway County at Saint Mary. We're coming back to
that one. CCA is at CFS. We got a holy
world right out of the gate, and Murray is at
Caldwell County. That's boys basketball. Girls basketball, Calloway County is

(23:46):
at Saint Mary, CCA at CFS, and Webster County we'll
travel and take on Hickman County. That's girls basketball. That's
tonight Tomorrow night you will have Ballard Memorial. This is
boys Ballard Memorial at Fulton County, CCA at McCracken County,
Dawson Springs will take on Christian Fellowship Hall's Tennessee is

(24:11):
at Fulton City, Murray goes to Lion County. Oh, we're
coming back to that one. Saint Mary is taken on
Carlisle County. Trigg County will take on Hickman County in
girls basketball. Tomorrow night you've got Baller Memorial Fulton County, CCA,
McCracken County, Dawson Springs CFS. Halston to see Fulton City,
Livingston Central at Graves County, Murray at Lyon County. Saint

(24:36):
Mary will take on Carlisle County. All right, did you
get all that? Here's what this boils down to. Let's
just focus on tonight Tonight, Monday night's games. If you're
listening to the podcast, you got the podcast on Sunday.
If you're listening to the radio, you're getting the radio
on Monday. So Monday nights games, here's what I'm looking
forward to. How about the doubleheader Calloway County at Saint

(24:57):
Mary both games, because listen Calloway and the girls' side,
they are the team to beat. They are the number
one team in the region going into the season. Saint
Mary was good last season. I don't think Callaway is
gonna struggle in this game. I don't think Saint Mary
makes it a game, but it's just gonna be interesting
to see what Calloway looks like game one, right out

(25:19):
of the gate and you doing so on the road
and a tough gym to play in, a tough environment
to play in, allowed environment to play in. If five
people are in that gym, it's loud, and just kind
of seeing how they come out of the gate and
how they start their season. On the boys side, what
we're looking forward to is Saint Mary is touting themselves

(25:39):
as a contender. Calloway is the defending champs, but they're
not the same team. So we're gonna be watching to
see what does Calloway look like, what do they have
with Luke Armstrong returning, and what do they have around him?
Do they have enough around him? Can they be a contender?
Can they be a competitor again this season? I don't
necessarily think so, but can And this is a good

(26:01):
first test to take on Saint Mary, who thinks they are,
who has some talent, and has some guys returning, and
has a lot of momentum going into the season. So
those are things we're looking forward to, but we're looking
forward to more and I'll have more on that when
we come back. Let's take a break. We'll come back
right here. It's Region one, Region one sports. We know
local because we are local. It's been one week, suns hungry,

(26:26):
five days after me saying come back and see me
three days is a living room sports. Our final segment
here on your radio Monday edition of the show. You're December,
the first edition of the show. We're talking basketball as
we get ready for the basketball season. Games we're looking
forward to and not's one and two. I told you

(26:46):
as far as double headers, callaway at Saint Mary. Now
I got into that a little bit. Let's get into
it a little bit more on the girls side. Listen,
Saint Mary. It's gonna be a rough night for them.
It's just gonna be a rough night. They are a
young team. You you look at their roster, they've got
a couple of seventh graders, a couple of eighth graders,
a couple of freshmen. They I think their oldest player

(27:07):
is a junior and one sophomore, So this is a
very young, gonna be a very overmatched team. But also
the flip side of that is this veteran, you know,
number one team in the region in Calloway County. Can
they come out and do what you're supposed to do?
What if I said on this show for years, when
you have a matchup like this, good teams beat bad

(27:28):
teams bad? Do they do that night one? Do they
come out, put their foot down and show yes, we
are the team to beat. I know this is a
team that's not, in all honest se Saint Mary not
expected to make the regional tournament. They're not probably won't,
But you know, can they come out and prove that
or is it a game where they struggle a little
bit to make shots early? Kind of you know everybody

(27:50):
kind of you know what kind of page are they
on on night one? So that's what we're looking at
on the girls side. On the boys side, again, I
know Calloway's you're defending regional champs, but you look at
guys from last season that made noise. That would be
Luke Armstrong who's now a junior and then they got
the transfer in a c. Strickland. Okay, the question for

(28:11):
Callaway on the boys side, who are you, like, like,
who is gonna step up? You know, there's a lot
of minutes and a lot of points that need to
be figured out, and we are asking those questions. Can
we get some answers tomorrow night? Then you look at
Saint Mary, and I said earlier, they believe they are
a team that's gonna make the regional tournament again this season.

(28:32):
Maybe yeah, maybe. So here you go, who are you
What are you gonna look like? Right out of the gate.
You've got a team of guys back, You've got Griffin Mays,
who's now a freshman. What are you gonna look look
like without Sims? You know, are these guys able to
truly get their shot, truly get their points without a
guy drawing the attention to the defense? I think so.

(28:56):
But that's again Night one. Things we're looking at, things
we want to see and things we hope to see.
So that's a big one for Monday Night one. We'll
keep an eye on. Then you've got Murray on the
boys side, Murray at Caldwell County again, we've been kind
of touting Murray as being a team to watch, team
to beat, team you want to keep your eye on

(29:16):
this season, and they go over to Caldwell County. Now
you talk about getting yourself tested out of the gate.
Murray tonight Monday night, plays Caldwell County on the road,
not exactly a pushover team. Then they go to a
little school named Lion County tomorrow night, both on the road,
both in the second Region where things are a little different.

(29:38):
Reffing can be a little different, atmospheres can be a
little different. So they're really going to be thrown into
it to start the season. But just focusing on tonight
with Coldwell County for Murray High. This is a team
I'm trying to go back and look at last season.
This is a team that was very solid last year.
They were sixteen and eleven. Looking at the roster, they

(30:00):
should have several guys back. They had a few seniors
on that squad. But this is a team a year
ago that shot forty five percent from the floor twenty
nine percent from three uh. They had Wilson and Whittingham
their leading scorers at nineteen and ten a game. So
let's see if those guys are back, Wilson was a senior,
Whittingham was a since. Oh yeah, okay, this is this

(30:21):
could be a good test for Murray facing a Tiger
team to Tigers playing tonight, Caldwell County that lost their
leading scores but had a good year last season, and Murray,
who's gonna have a complete identity overhaul this this year.
Not a bad test to go on the road tonight,
and then tomorrow night they get Lion County. So Murray
out of the gate. We're really gonna find out if

(30:42):
my theory is true and if Murray is a team
that's in that conversation, in that top five, top six
spot in the region and a team that we we
do expect to possibly be in the regional tournament. Still
gonna be a tough district. I know Calloway's down, I
get it. That district's still gonna be tough. It's still
gonna be tough. So that's one we're looking forward to tonight.

(31:04):
On the girls side, let me look at Monday real
quick before we move on. Now, Okay, that's that's kind
of the big ones at least for tonight. Let's go
to Tuesday night. Tuesday Night, you've got Ballard in Fulton County.
I think, again, very good scheduling. Here. You two teams
that are in that part of the state that are
very similar kind of year after year, and two teams
that are gonna, you know, Ballard especially, you talk about identity,

(31:27):
They're really going to be trying to figure out who
they are after losing their greatest score, maybe best basketball
player in school history in Bernie. So who's Ballard? What
are they going to look like this season? Fulton County
lost some talent. What are they going to look like?
Two smaller schools, two very traditionally even matched programs. I

(31:48):
think that's good scheduling. We'll kind of be looking forward
to that. Staying on the boys side, McCracken County gets
underway with Cca, have fun Cca, Like, man, what a
first game, and we'll get to kind of the same
thing I said about Callaway County's girls. What does McCracken
truly look like. This is a game where they can

(32:08):
Yes it's a district game, yes it's but this is
a game they've traditionally and we expect tomorrow night to
be able to come out kind of do what they want,
get what they want, and run their stuff and kind
of get into their season. So we'll get an idea,
you know, a chance to see how all those pieces
work together. Woodford transferring in, how does he work with
Miller and Grogan and Cloak being back and cloapes healthy.

(32:30):
What does he look like? So we're looking at that.
Then you look down the list and again, I said,
Murray Lyon County talked about that one. How about this one.
This one's a big one. Saint Mary and Carlisle County again,
two teams that are kind of battling in our top
five here in the in the region, in our early
season power rankings. And you've got I'm trying to find it.

(32:51):
I'm gonna lose it because I'm all over the map here.
Let me go back another click. There we go again.
You got Carlile County coming off of a good season
last season. They were a young team last season. Carlile
was fourteen and seventeen, Saint Mary twenty three to nine.
This was a game to start the year that Saint
Mary won and kind of got their season started on
a confident note and got them flowing towards that regional

(33:15):
tournament appearance. Carlile's hoping to kind of do the same here.
This is at Carlile County. Again, not always an easy
place to go play Carlile. You look at what they
were last season. I mean, we all know why. Rickards
seventeen point four points per game. He's back. McBride's back.
I mean, so they've got a lot of their top

(33:35):
dudes back. They're gonna have to find some guard play.
This is gonna be a game tomorrow night out of
the gate where you're gonna see a little bit of
a mismatch. You're gonna see, but the guard play for
Carlile County is what we're watching. It's a bit of
a mismatch. It'll be the size of Rickard and some
of the size of Carlile County taken on Saint Mary

(33:56):
whose guard play may bother Carlile County And that's something
we're looking at for tomorrow night. That's a matchup we're
watching and watching it for those reasons. That'll be fun.
That's on the boys side. On the girl's side, you
kind of look down that list again, same thing with
Ballad and Fulton County. You kind of get an idea
of who you are very you know, good scheduling out

(34:17):
of the gate to see where you're at, who you are?
Excuse me. But then on the girl's side, I'm looking
at the game. I'm going to be at Livingston Central
and Graves County. This was a good game a year ago.
This is a game where Graves had a chance to
put them away and kind of let Livingson County back
in it. Levingson County's got some talent back and Graves

(34:38):
talk about teams trying to find their identity early. Who
are you without Hannah Glisten, Who are you without Winfrey,
without Chloe Scott without like you know, the players you
graduated a year ago at Addison Woodelski. Those were players
they leaned on quite a bit. Now they've got a
lot of you know, they've got five seniors on this
team that have all got experience. But who's going to

(34:58):
step up? I don't think they're going to have that
one player. You know, Graves does not have that that
one player this year in a Skylar Lowe or a
or a Jaden Koke or you look at Marshall County
with Terry and Wall like, I don't think they have
that one player that's like each and every night you're
gonna see that player lead them in scoring. I think

(35:19):
that you know, players like Ella Kemp, I think uh
Sidney Shea, I think, you know Burge like those players
could be their leading scorers, you know, stat wise. But
I think they're a team that's gonna have five or
six of any given not one of those five or
six be the be the player, be the one getting buckets.
It's gonna be kind of, you know, points by committee

(35:40):
with them. So, okay, we're gonna have to see that.
Who are you without those players from last year? Who
are you without hand glisten? What are those young players
look like? They have a very talented but young core coming.
What are those players gonna look like? That's something we're
looking at and excited for. Out of the gate and
then keeping it on the girl's side, Murray goes to

(36:02):
Lyon County on the girls side, Murray again complete overhaul.
They lost two of their top three players from a
year ago after they dismissed coach Faust, so they're going
to be very different. They were kind of a team
that was slowly starting to build back. How much does
that reset them? Lyon County is a very good basketball

(36:22):
team on the girls side. They also have a new coach,
and then Saint Mary at Carlisle County, and again this
is more about you know, Carlo County's got one of
the better players in the region and how much do
they have around her? And Saint Mary will be a
good test for that and a good way for us
to see that. So a lot of good basketball to
look forward to Tomorrow night and Tuesday night. And then

(36:43):
here's the other thing. We've got Hoopfest coming up Thursday night,
starting Thursday night, and I love the hoop Fest schedule.
I think hoop Fest the last few years, hoop Fest
the last few years has been as good, if not better,
than it's been in a long long time. You know,
those early years, it was exciting, it was fun. You
had Carmelo Anthony coming in, You had these big names

(37:06):
coming in. You still have big names, but that's kind
of what it was all about. I think it does
a good job of blending local, good local teams with
good state and national teams, and then you have those
sort of marquee national ranked you know, highly touted player matchups.
So they've really done a good job of blending it
into a very well scheduled event. And you're gonna get

(37:31):
that and we'll talk about that more as we get
into the week. But football season is over, well you
got Murray still live. Basketball season is is here. You
know one thing we didn't talk about, and I've got
a little tom, so let's hit it. We talked about
our power rankings, We talked about our power players. We
kind of talked about what these teams' identities might be,

(37:51):
who's in the hunt, who's being hunted. Districts like once again,
you know it the the the fourth district last year
kind of ended up being the toughest district, or it
was a few years ago. You've had the third district,
be that a little bit. You have the second district,
be that. What's that district this year? Is there a
district where it's a three or more team race? But

(38:16):
right like a lot of these districts are pretty defined,
you know the I think this year the third district,
it's Mayfield Graves both on the boys and girls side.
I just don't see a path for Ballard on either
side of the fence to get in. I just don't
so that it feels like a two team race this
season in the fourth district. You know, I think on
the boy's side, it it feels like Marshall, maybe Murray,

(38:39):
but we're still waiting to see about Callaway. On the
girls side, it's a two team race. It's gonna be
Callaway and Marshall second district. On the girls side, I
think it's a two team race. I think it's you know,
Tillman will kind of get in and obviously McCraken. On
the boy's side, I think it becomes a three team

(39:00):
race again. I think this becomes a very tough district. Now.
McCraken set out the regional tournament last season. That ain't
gonna happen this year. But who is Tillman? What are
they really gonna look like? And then you've got Saint
Mary who thinks they can get back, who has some talent,
or at least enough talent to probably get back. Can
they pull that off? Can they do that something special?

(39:22):
So I think you're talking girls basketball. I don't know
if there's a single district where you have really a
three team race for boys basketball. I think you're looking
at the second district for sure, maybe the fourth district.
But that's some of the things that we need to
get about, you know, a month into the season before
we can start talking that way, before we can start

(39:44):
definitively saying that's a three team district or that's only
a two team district. So again, just something to keep
an eye on as we start the season. And oh,
by the way, if you're still looking for a great book,
you need the history of First Region Basketball. It'd sign
I've shared it on social media by mister Andrew Clinton.
Go find it. I've had several people tell me thank

(40:04):
you for turning me on to it, thank you for
the heads up. They've picked it up, they've enjoyed, they've
loved every minute of it. You need to go get
your copy, especially as we're starting the basketball season and
especially to Christmas now right around the corner. Go pick
that up. Don't forget you will think me later. It
is a phenomenal resource. I've enjoyed every moment of it
so far. Not a book you sit down and read
cover to cover, but a reference book. And you're gonna

(40:27):
be glad you got it. All right, that's gonna wrap
things up for us here today. Hope you've enjoyed it.
I'll be back on Wednesday with plenty more. Until then,
this has been Region one, sports,
