Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five The.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Fan and Away we Go. It is a Wednesday edition
of the show. I'm Brian yorke in. This is the
Region one Sports Report Wednesday. Addition a chilly December Wednesday
edition of the show. Uh the phone number, haven't given
it out in a while. I just realized it today.
The phone number two seven oh five, three four forty
(00:33):
three oh eight two seven oh five, three four forty
three oh eight. That is the number to get in
touch with us at Region one Sports. So out of
the gate. If things sound different, they should. I'm in
the studio. Here's the deal. This is not gonna happen often.
It will happen occasionally, but not often. Where I was
(00:56):
supposed to have a Graves game on Tuesday night, the
game got canceled and I had planned on coming to
the radio station between getting off work at the mall
and going to the game, and essentially the game got canceled,
I still had to come to the radio station to
get a couple of things or take care of a
couple of things, and I thought, well, I'm here. That's
a good microphone and studio that's the professional sounding equipment.
(01:21):
Why not just do the show tonight? Why not just
go ahead and knock out now? Full disclosure, the entire
show is not going to be recorded on this microphone
because I want to try to capture at least Tuesday
nights results. So our last segment on today's show will
be recorded from home later in the evening so that
I can get all the info we need to get.
(01:42):
But the heart of the show, the meat of the show,
which today is going to be our power rankings. I thought,
let's do that where it sounds the best. So here
we are. It's so weird being back. I know that
I've only been a non full time I'm a part
time employee the radio station, but I know what I've
(02:02):
been part time, you know, for two and a half weeks,
Like it's literally two and a half weeks ago was
my last day is a full time employee.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
It wasn't that longer.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
It feels like forever, Like it feels like it's been
three months since I really walked in this building. And
it's it's just something comforting about going to the place
that you've spent your formative years and being back, even
if it's only been a few weeks, so it is
it is odd. It is weird being back and being
in studio, but it's it just it feels right. It's
(02:33):
it feels like home. I'm home for a moment. So
I'm glad that to be here. I'm glad that we
could do this and make it sound well, and I'm
glad to get to do Region one sports. For your
Wednesday edition of the show, did you survive the snow?
By the way, did you survive the winter weather that
we got? That was fun? Not only and listen, I've
said that a thousand times. If it's going to be cold,
(02:57):
it might as well snow and it and it was
cold twenty like right now, it's the evening time and
it's twenty five degrees. It's gonna be a balmy forty
degrees on your Wednesday. In fact, this weekend it's gonna
get to forty seven. I'm gonna be in shorts like
it's gonna be ridiculous. But it is gonna be a
little bit warmer here and there as the days go on.
(03:20):
I don't know, though, Christmas time, be cold.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Just be cold.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
You want to snow, snow, want to be cold, Be cold.
Now the day after Christmas, if you want to be
seventy five and sunny, more power to you.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I'm here for it.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
But at least until Christmas, let's let's have a season.
Let's enjoy the season. Let's enjoy the weather and the
cold and the snow and get in the Christmas spirit.
After Christmas, get out of here, get away from that.
Let's get back to warm weather. It's always been my
view anyway, all right. So that thing we do on
the Region of One Sports report, we talk sports, and
(03:54):
let's do that now again. I will in the third segment,
we will get caught up on Tuesday's square. I'll try
to wait and record that when we get those scores
and kind of react to that. But we do have
some scores from Monday, so we'll get to those scores
in any stats we may have, and then in our
second segment we'll do power rankings.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
That's that's kind of how the show is going to
lay out today.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
So let's look at scores, let's look at everything from
around the region that we have that that was played
on your Monday night. So here we go. We'll start
with girls basketball on your Monday Calloway County. You got
started off to a one and oh start on their
season beating Saint Mary eighty nine thirty three. CFS won
the Holy War with CCA fifty three thirteen. So again,
(04:42):
those are your girl scores from Monday. On Monday boys scores,
CFS won the Holy Wars seventy six forty six over CCA.
And how about this an upset to start the season.
Saint Mary falls to Calloway County sixty nine sixty five
Callaway County. This is this is the one we're gonna
(05:04):
really talk about. You know, Calloway County. They're supposed to
be down, They're not supposed to be as good. I
don't think they're gonna be as good last season. I
don't think they're gonna be a team to beat for
the regional title this season. But they certainly look like
they're gonna throw their hat in the ring. It looks
like they're gonna it looks like they're at least gonna
(05:24):
try to be contenders this season. And we talked about
Murray might be the year. It's it's Marshall and Murray
coming out of that district in Calloway County. At least
in Game one goes wayit a minute. We're still pretty good.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
We graduated some dudes, but we still got some guys.
So we'll talk about that here in a moment. I
don't have their stats, and again I'm not gonna fault
them for that right now, but I would like to,
you know, hope to get those at some point. But
what I can tell you is this was a home
game for Saint Mary. This is what makes it even
more interesting to me. Like Saint Mary, you know, they think,
(06:03):
and they may be right, that they're a contender. They
think that they're a team that's gonna put teams unnotice that. Yeah,
we graduated Luke Simms, and we lost Haws and we
lost some good role players, and we lost some guys
off that team last year, but we've got dudes back
and we're going to be a perennial. They think, and
they may be right, that they're a team that's gonna
(06:24):
get back to the regional tournament. And they they kind
of feel like they're gonna be a program that should
do that year after year. And on opening night against
a perceived down Calloway County team at home, they lose.
Now will it matter in the scheme of things.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Probably not.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Let's look at the stats. Saint mary does have stats
on their end. Griffin May's had twenty one, Kobe Nichols
at nineteen, Andrew Puckett had twelve. That'll get it done
most nights. Sixty five points will get it done most nights.
They shot forty four percent from the floor, They were
thirty three percent from three, nearly seventy percent at the
foul line. Again, that'll get it done most nights. Now,
(07:08):
the report I got was that they got killed on
the offensive or got killed on the glass, by the way,
and not only that, Callaway County. And this is the
fun thing about what happens this time of year when
like we go into the season, we have some knowns,
but we have unknowns. One of the unknowns for Callaway
County was gonna be who scores. We know Armstrong's there,
(07:28):
we know you know Stricklands there like, but who can
step up? Who's gonna take those minutes, Who's gonna take
that scoring that was graduated last season. Well, one of
those dudes was Jackson Names the senior apparently dropped twenty
three points on Saint Mary in that game. Him and
Armstrong were combined ten from ten at the free throw
(07:51):
line in the fourth quarter. Again, I don't have their stats,
but I got that. So yeah, that was not on
on anybody being go card to start the year. And
it's questions we have that we need answers to. I mean,
Jackson Ames last season as a junior, playing behind that
great senior class, he averaged two points a game two
(08:15):
and a half. Let's we'll be fair two and a half.
He dropped twenty three on game one. If that answers
that now, will he average twenty points a game? Probably not,
but Calloway needed scoring, needed guys to step up. He's
a senior. He stepped up in Callaway County gets a
(08:37):
very very good win game one of the basketball season.
Now they are scheduled to play Friday night against Leed
Academy out of Nashville. Don't know anything about them, but
we'll see. They have a few days now to regroup.
Saint Mary is in action tonight and hopefully we'll have
that score and that result for you before I call
(08:57):
it a night. You know that game a tip at
seven thirty Carlole County Saint Mary. It's a bounce back opportunity.
For Carlisle or for Saint Mary. But this is a
big opportunity for Carlole County to plant their flag, as
as I said a few weeks ago, a potential top
five team. So that's what we're looking forward to. We'll
see if we get that score before the end of
(09:18):
the show today before I wrap up recording at least.
So that's on the boys side. On the girls side again,
you know you're talking about Callaway County getting a win
over Actually I think I might have had something wrong
with with Callai County's boys.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Yeah, they played Leader County. Okay, just check in.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Callay County's girls get their win eighty nine to thirty
three Saint Mary. Again, they're not expected to get to
the regional tournament. They're not expected. They're young that you know,
this was This went exactly as it should have went like.
This win exactly how it should have. Eighty nine to
thirty three. That's about the right margin of victory, about
what you would expect. Callawai County in this game shot
(09:59):
fifty nine percent from the floor. They were twelve of
fourteen or twelve of twenty four from three. That's fifty percent.
That's pretty good. Don't know if you know, that's pretty good.
They were nine of ten at the free throw line
ninety percent. Sailor load did sailor load things? She had
twenty one points in this game, I believe ten rebounds,
so a double double to start her probably player of
(10:22):
the year campaign, not probably. I think she's most definitely
gonna be player of the year. Twenty one to ten.
Jane Koca had sixteen. Here you go though the transfer.
The eighth grader Josie Haynes seventeen points, one of two
from the inside the arc, five of seven from three.
So the question for Callaway County was who's the tertiary,
(10:45):
who's the third score, Who's the one that's gonna step
up the dynamic duo of Low and Coke. They gotta
have a third. Haines is good. She was good last
year as the seventh grader for Murray, but that was
a necessity. Well, it's kind of a necessity that she
plays well for Callaway because she's one of the more
talented players, even though in eighth grader. Is she gonna
(11:06):
be able to do that? Are they gonna be able
to do that against the Marshalls and the Graves and
the mccrakens yet to be seen. But when we pose
the question who can step up and be the third,
she's clearly gonna step up and be the third, clearly.
And they'll have players like Olivia Perkins and Calli Franklin
and Angie Emory and Emma Grooms that can you know,
(11:27):
score six seven points any given night. In fact, they
all basically had six or seven last night. But they've
got to have three and double figures. Got to you
want to win the region. You're a contender with two
and double figures, you're a regional favorite with three twenty
one for Low Haynes with seventeen, Coke with sixteen. That
(11:47):
will get it done, all right, That gets us done.
For the first segment, taking a break, coming back Power
rankings on Wednesday's edition, the other Region one Sports Report.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Region one Sports in for the deep please.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Mister Green Christmas, he's mist the Sun, He's westy.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
On Sports.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
As we move along on this Wednesday edition of the show,
we've wrapped up our coverage of Monday's games. Our third segment,
I will hope to have coverage of Tuesday's games, but
for now we've got power rankings. Now here's the deal,
And I'll just be honest. We did preseason power rankings.
They shouldn't change. But you know what, after the last
(12:40):
two and a half, what three weeks? It's been three weeks.
After the last three weeks, you get presented with maybe
different information, Maybe you rethink things, maybe you see things differently.
Maybe one team already lost to another team, which happened
on Monday, Maybe they get it back on Tuesday. Maybe
these power rankings are pointless by the time the third
(13:01):
segment rolls around. But I'm just just gonna redo them.
We're just gonna throw out what we did three weeks ago,
and we're gonna say this is our new power rankings,
for better or for worse. We usually follow the formula,
who did you play, what happened? What did we think
was gonna happen? Right, Strength of schedule matters. Losing to
(13:22):
good teams doesn't bump you. Beating good teams will bump you,
that kind of thing. But we're just gonna pretend three
weeks ago didn't happen, and we're just gonna have a
brand new power ranking based on how I've thought about
teams and what I've been told about teams and the
information I have to go with as we go into
a brand new season, so starting fresh. So we'll just
(13:43):
pretend three weeks ago didn't happen. Just between me and you,
it's this is brand new. You you never knew that, right,
You didn't know that happened three weeks ago. I didn't either.
So this is our power rankings as we go into
the basketball season. We'll start on the boy's side. We'll
start with number one, because I think it's I think
it's obvious. Number one as we go into the season
(14:04):
is McCracken County. They play tonight, they play CCA. They're
probably gonna win by ninety that's just reality. So I
don't I say tonight if you're listening on Wednesday, it
was on Tuesday night. But we'll hopefully have that score
again later on. But they play CCA, they're gonna win
by one hundred, and then we'll see how things go.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
When they play.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Thursday at the Sports Center in Owensboro against Poope John Paul,
we'll see how that goes. Then they've got hoop Fest
on Saturday, so they've got they got to play some teams.
And then by the way, they get Marshall County next Thursday.
But they're number one. I mean you look at their
starting lineup alone, Miles Woodford transferring in twenty points per
(14:47):
game plus a year ago. You get the return of
Jackson Clope, a senior, a big, a skilled big. You've
got seniors like Owen, Grogan and Carter. You've got another
score and Garrett Miller, like you really do, kind of
have what you need and a lot of spots, and
(15:09):
they got it. Talented, veteran led. They've got a guard
that can slash and score. They got a big that
can take you inside. They've got shooters on the outside.
McCracken's number one. It's it's gonna be everybody chasing them
number two, number two. Listen, I'm going with Graves County.
(15:30):
This may change. They've got a tough schedule to start
the season. They may they They very well could be
Owen two oh and three to start the year. Who knows.
But again, you base it on returners, you base it
on talent, you base it on what you know. They're
veteran led, a lot of juniors, but you've got guys
(15:53):
that can slash and score. You've got Tykviot who's probably
gonna be sixteen to seventeen a game. You've got Reagan mathis,
you've got body Bekasivika Junior, who's got size and athleticism.
Who can you know, he's more of a wing, but
he can take you down low if need be, can jump.
Kane Fulcher may be one of the best passers in
the region. They've got shooters, they've got depth, They've got
(16:16):
a lot to like.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
Two. Are they a favorite to win the region? No?
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Well, let me take it back. Are they a favorite?
Speaker 1 (16:24):
Yes? The favorite?
Speaker 2 (16:25):
No, but they're coming in number two at number three,
I go Marshall County and you're splitting hairs here. Two
and three are are in the same tier, two and
three in the same tier. But we go Marshall County
here because we know they've got one of the best
players in the region and Matthew Laney. We know they've
(16:46):
got size, and they've got guys that you know, they've
got veterans and Jessic and Moehler and Cam's story and
Ryan Stokes. I mean, they've got dudes. The question is
they have enough. Do they have enough scoring? They had
scoring last year and when those guys were out or
got hurt, we saw a drop off. Can they make
it up a year later, that's still the only question.
(17:09):
We know they're gonna play tough, we know they're gonna
play good defense. We know they're gonna give you one
hundred percent every single night. We know Matthew Lanky Is
is a matchup nightmare for most teams. And we know
that come the end of the season, they're gonna be
a team that, just like the start of the season,
we're saying, as a shot to win the region, we
just need to see and know who's gonna, you know, score,
(17:32):
who's gonna fill those spots, who's gonna take on those
scoring roles, and who's gonna step up and fill that
void that they graduated from a year ago. But they
come in at number three, splitting hairs. Tier one is
McCracken County, Tier two is Graves and Marshall. Then coming
in it at number where am I at four? This
(17:53):
is where I'm putting Carlisle County and I'm putting Carlile
County here. But for the same reason I just mentioned
some of these other teams, lots of guys back, lots
of veterans back, They've got some some matchup problems for
some other teams. You got wide Rickard, who's a big,
who can double double most nights. You've got McBride who's back,
he's a big, he's a force. So they've got they've
(18:14):
got it down in the post right, like they can
do things in the posts that other teams, even on
this list, just are gonna have trouble with I think
where they're gonna struggle a little bits in their guard
play and they're shooting and they're ball handling. But again,
they've got size, they've got skill, they've got a veteran
legendary coach in the region. They come in at number four.
(18:36):
Now they get Saint Mary tonight. Saint Mary might beat them,
we'll see, it'll change things, who knows. But they come
in at least in our start of the year at
number four, at number five. Now, I will put Saint
Mary here. And I get it, you're screaming. They just
lost Monday to callaway coundidate. Keep in mind, we need
a full week of work here, so I will stay
(18:57):
Saint Mary here. But they're teetering out. They beat Carlile County,
They're gonna stay in, but they're teetering. So I'll put
Saint Mary here and again young guys, talented guys. You've
seen it already. Griffin may has had twenty one opening night,
Nichols with nineteen, Pucket with twelve shot the ball. Okay,
I think they're gonna to shoot a little bit better
than that going forward, but did pretty good. I like
(19:20):
them at number five on the cusp. Well, now you've
got Callaway on the cusp, you got Murray. Who's beating
on that door? Maybe Mayfield, we gotta wait and see you.
Of course, they don't play anybody for like a month
and a half, so i'd put all those teams in
the mix, but our top five to start the year.
But Cracket at one, Graves at two, Marshall at three,
(19:42):
I'll go Carlisle four, Saint Mary at five. He oh
at Tillman. Tillman's on that on that verge too, we
got we gotta learn more about Tilman. So those are
a five on the girl's side. Number one's Callaway County.
And now you have a little bit of an answer
to the question we posed earlier, and I answered it earlier.
Who's the third score? I think it's gonna be Haynes.
(20:04):
She'll at least be in that spot most of the year,
but they're the one that everybody's chasing. So number one's Callaway.
Number two, I go Marshall County. The Lady Marshalls have
everything they need in the starting lineup. Callaway has the
best duo. Marshall probably has the best starting five overall.
And I'm trying to like I'm on their page here,
(20:26):
it is there, it is. It took me forever to
find the roster. But you've got obviously Kinsley Terry, You've
got obviously Addie Wall. But then you've got a veteran
in Sandlin who's back and been around the block. You've
got Riley t who's been there, done that and got
a lot of experience. You've got other younger players that
we're gonna hear and learn and see step up. Jessica
(20:47):
Reid is back. She's been playing point guard. It feels
like forever. She's a sophomore. Ryland Darnell a junior, so
very talented player. They've got a really good starting five.
So Cala at one, they're in Tier one, Marshaled at two,
they're in Tier two, and they're in Tier two with
(21:08):
Graves County. My lady Eagles. Again, if Calaway's got the
best duo and Marshall's got the best starting five, the
overall best depth goes to Graves County. They may not
be as good, have a tandem as good at the top,
they may not have a starting lineup that consistently matches
what Marshall will do, but they're gonna have eight none
(21:31):
that can play, and that's probably more than most other
teams on the list. We've got to see though, who
takes the mantle, who's the hand of glisten replacement, who's
the Addison Woodelski? Would you know, who's gonna step up?
There's a lot of production that graduated from last year.
They've got a lot of talent, a lot of veterans.
I mean, you've got not only your seniors in Burgess
(21:53):
and Fowler and Sidney Shay and you know, Ellie Kemp
and I'm miss I'm totally missing one Ginger Martin. Holy cow,
Ginger Martin's one. So not only do you have those seniors,
they've but they've all been very good role players in
the past. But you've still got other talent. You got
Peyton Hayden, who's a junior. Now you've got Curly Goatlee,
(22:17):
who had a really good year as an eighth grader,
who is going to be leaned on a lot as
a freshman. Isla Manning is a sophomore who can really
go play and get it done. I like their depth.
You know the Cascifi's hurt right now when she gets back.
That's a true talented, skilled big so I like. I
like where the lady Eagles are. They're just a little younger,
(22:37):
a little less experienced, a little less production returning from
last year. So callawai one Tier one Marshall and Graves
and tier two Marshall, number two, Graves at number three.
At number four is Mayfield. Not far behind those teams,
by the way, not far at all. New coach and
coach Faust. He comes in, but he takes over again
a veteran led group. You've got lay May's who is
(23:00):
finally in her senior year. As a Graves fan, I've
been waiting for her to graduate forever.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
I'm kidding.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Super talented, great kid, great talent. She's in her senior year.
Keille Henson's in her senior year, Lex Fagan's in her
senior year, Avery Creasing and Ali Creesen. You got a
senior and a junior in the Creasings. Like, that's a
really good lineup right there, in and of itself. That's
the Mayfield Cardinals, Lady Cardinals. Sorry, but I got them
(23:28):
at number four and then at number five. You know
it's tough. I'm gonna go with Carlisle. I need to
see more about what they can do. They're young, but
they've got Hogan Camp, They've got Edging, I said Macy
Hogan Camp, Grayson Edging.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
Those are two really good players. They always seem to
have those.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Olivia Webb was a good freshman last season or eighth
grader last year, so they've got some talent. They're just
younger this year. We'll see how it goes. But one
is Callaway. Two is Marshall three, Graves fo Field five,
Carlisle Tier one, Callaway Tier two, Marshal Engraves, Tier three
(24:04):
is Mayfield. Carlisle's kind of in their own level and
then never in the field. That's kind of how we
look at it. All. Right, take it a break, we
come back. We'll have hopefully scores and some things to
talk about from Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Right here on Region one, the fastest growing local sports
show in the region. This is Region one Sports.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Mister Christmas, I'm mister.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
Mister I sick, mister ten. Region one Sports.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
It is our final segment here on your Wednesday edition
of the show. I told you if the audio quality
sounds different, bear with me. First two segments recorded in
the studio. The third segment, well, I had to come
home and record that because we just had too many
games going on tonight. And one of the things that
we at least try to pride ourselves on here on
(24:56):
Region one is being topical, being on point, not being
late to the party. So making sure that you're at
least up to date with the things that are happening
around the region. So first segment we covered Monday's games.
Second segment we had our power rankings. Now let's talk
about last night's games or Tuesday nights games, So scores
(25:17):
from around the region on your Tuesday night. We'll start
with boys basketball, because that's what I've got pulled up
in front of me. Hickman County over Trigg County sixty
eight fifty two, Lion County over Murray. This one was close.
We'll talk about it in a moment, but it was
eighty four sixty four ends up being a twenty point
(25:37):
Lions win. On Tuesday night McCracken County, I told you
they'd win by like one hundred. Well they at least
scored one hundred one to one to twenty seven.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
As they beat CCA.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
McCracken County gets the win and Saint Mary does get
the bounce back. They go on the road at Carlisle
County and they win fifty nine fifty four. That is
your boys scores from Tuesday. Let's take a look at
girls scores and then we'll come back and we'll get
some thoughts on these games. Looking at girls scores from
your Tuesday Carlile County over Saint Mary sixty eight fifty three.
(26:14):
Lyon County beat Murray eighty to thirty. Yeah you heard
that right, eighty to thirty. McCracken County over CCA seventy
seven fourteen.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
Uh huh. You know.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Look, I hate to start off the season with this
as as the topic. We'll see how it goes the rest.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
Of the way. We will, but I really.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
Hope this isn't one of those years that we're talking
about CCA needing to not be in district play like
CFS did it for a long time. They were out
of district play for quite a while. As they saw
a window start to open where they thought they were
gonna be competitive, they got back into district play. I
know there's a process to that, but sometimes you got
(27:00):
to self evaluate.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Just hope it's not that season.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
I really really do, because it honestly has been more
often than not for Cca, And I know the boys
team has been competitive. I like the coaches over there,
so I think they do a phenomenal job. But I
don't know. Sometimes if district plays the right call, it's
I don't know. And again again, I'm not trying to
(27:24):
go there. I'm not trying to jump conclusion and kind
of jump out in front on this, but I am
saying I just hope, I really hope that that's not
the direction this goes in.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
So I know they played with cracking.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
I'll give them the past tonight, but we'll see how
things go as the season goes on.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
So that's kind of my first thought. Outside of that.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Yeah, I mean, you look at We'll start with the
girls page because that's what I'm on, but you look
at it and it kind of win is expected Carlile County.
A closer went over to Saint Mary than Saint Mary's
previous loss the night before to Calloway County. So, you know, again,
that kind of proves a couple of things. I don't
think Saint Mary's quite there yet to compete for their
(28:06):
district either, and Carlisle Counties right where we put them
in the power rankings. I think they're a chaser, you know,
not not a regional contender, but probably the favorite.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
To win that district.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
And they're gonna be sort of top of the mid
tier teams. You know, you're gonna see them in that
fifth spot probably most of the year. And I think
that's what that win represents. Callaway kind of blows out
Saint Mary, Carlisle gets a double digit win, but closer,
and I think that shows the gap between a you know,
a Callaway and a Saint Mary I'm sorry, a callawaya Carlisle.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
I think that kind of shows what that gap is.
It represents that when.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
You see those scores, it's early, but that's where we are.
And remember we're talking power rankings. Now, we're talking who's
the team to beat. We're talking the who's the team
to Chase. Part of that is where's the gap? Right
because the season is just a marathon to close the
gap from where you are now to where you are
(29:05):
in the end, to hopefully be a contender in the end.
Right now, Calloway's got a pretty good gap on a
Carlisle County. You can see that in a common opponent
and the difference in those scores. Can Carlisle close any
kind of gap as the season goes on? Can can
Marshall close any kind of gap? Congret That's kind of
where we are when we start the season. These are
the favorites. These are the teams that are out top
(29:26):
and who we expect to win based on a lot
of things, or expect to be the best team all season,
and then it's up to these.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
Other teams to catch them. Can they catch them? Do
they have enough to catch them? Sometimes? Yes?
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Sometimes no. We'll see how that goes. But that's on
the girl's side. That's sort of what that represents. God bit,
it's ugh here for Murray High. They lose eighty to thirty.
Lion County's good. They're not fifty points better than a
lot of teams. You're not going to see that a
lot this season. I think that's just going to be
the year Murray's gonna have. They lost one of their
best players to transfell to of their best players to transfer,
(30:02):
after they got rid of their coach who's now at Mayfield.
So I just think this is, you know, they thought
they were kind of down as a program.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
That's why they made the change. They set themselves back.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
I think that's just reality, and I think you're gonna
see that this season. So anyway, that's on the girls side,
Let's go back to the boy's side for a moment
and give Saint Mary their due, because again in our
power rankings, we do have Carlott County in the fifth spot,
I'm sorry, the fourth spot, and you know, look, yeah
next week, if things hold, you still got still got
(30:35):
a week to go. But if things hold, Saint Mary
will leave them. The reality is Saint Mary lost to
a team that was not considered a power five team
on Monday night, and then they turn around and they
take out a power five team.
Speaker 1 (30:47):
I think that's first Region basketball this season. I think
there's gonna be parody.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
I think there's gonna be a lot more parody than
we realize. And I think you've seen that already in
the first two nights with the school.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
So you had Murray and Lyon County Knight. That was
certainly one to watch. And I get it. Look, Murray
is going to tell you in and rightfully so.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
They do have some guys out who played two sports,
who play football. They don't have their football guys yet now.
Two of their best players don't play football. Two of
their best returning players from a year ago, two of
their best scores from a year.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
Ago don't play football. But they do. They are a
little handicapped. And they did play Lion County very well tonight.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
If you go back and look at the and I'll
just give you the quarterback quarter scoring. Lion County led
ten by ten points twenty six sixteen after the first quarter.
Murray came back outscoring the lines in the second quarter
to tie the game thirty seven thirty seven at the half.
It was fifty four fifty at the end of the
third quarter. But the final score is at being eighty
(31:47):
four to sixty four.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
I mean, you can do the math.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
That was a twenty to fourteen, right, No, wait, let
me do the math real quick. It's late at night,
thirty to sixteen. See, I knew I would get it
at some point. Thirty to sixteen four quarter, unbelievable fourth
quarter for Lyon County, and I think it shows, Okay,
Murray is shorthanded. I think if Murray was full strength,
they probably still lose the game. I don't want to
hear the excuses because I think they still lose the game.
(32:13):
Maybe it's not that kind of loss. Maybe it's not
a you know, thirty to sixteen fourth quarter, but maybe
it ends up being a.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
Four or five six point loss. Who knows.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
But I don't want to hear the excuse. They didn't
have their guys. That's why they lost. They didn't have
their guys.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
That's why they lost big and lost. You know, with
Lyon County kind of going away.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
They didn't have their guys and they weren't able to
put four quarters together. I'll give you that. They still
trailed most of the game. Valiant effort, phenomenal effort. They
got their opportunity, they came close, they came back and tied.
It showed you great resilience in the second quarter, and
it still puts the region on blast a little bit.
This is what Murray is without some of those guys
(32:51):
without some of their other athletes. It still again, maybe
not good enough to beat Lyon County maybe, but there's
still gonna be competitive. And I think there's still gonna
be a team. And you look at that fourth District
Calloway goes to Saint Mary, not win and gets a
win when nobody expected it, and had some guys step
(33:12):
up and look good. We expected Marshall to be a
team that's gonna make the regional tournament.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
You throw Murray right back in it. They get their
full roster, they get going.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
I'm telling you fourth district basketball again this year may
be the district a little different, right, a little but
those teams that are supposed to be down may not
be as down. Those teams are supposed to be up
may not be as up. And you may have a
legitimate three team race. It's it's insane to think about.
It's crazy to think about, but it's the reality in
(33:43):
the world that we live in. You may have a
three team race, so something to look forward to. Last,
but not least again, McCracken County gets just a one
hundred and one to twenty seven win over a district opponent, which, okay,
scoring to not form a county. You wondered how that
might go. Well, Miles Woodford had seventeen points. He's gonna
(34:04):
average probably eighteen nineteen a game. I think that average
will come down just a little bit because he's got
so many other weapons around him that can score, you know,
and then you'll be in a lot of games like
this where you're gonna blow guys out, so he'll kind
of come out early, maybe not get that twenty points,
which is fine, right when you're on a regional contender team,
you don't have to score twenty points a game that
(34:25):
might make your team better. He had seventeen to night,
Aaron Adams had fourteen, Garrett Mieller had ten, Paxton Carver
had ten, Cayden Boyd had nine.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
Carter. I mean, just go down the list.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
Now they did not have cloak tonight, not back yet,
but you go down the list, you realize again, Yeah,
McCracken County is that good? And yeah, you know what's
my old saying. I say it all the time. Good
teams beat bad teams bad, and you're gonna see a
lot of these blowouts from McCracken County this season.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
All right, that's it. I got them in. I did
our Tuesday night games.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
