Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian york
On ninety nine to five, The Fad.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
And Away we go on your Friday edition of the show.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
This is the Region one Sports Report. I'm Brian Yorke,
and I hope you are.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Doing well and you've survived some chilly weather this week.
In fact, it was colder on Thursday than it expected.
It does look like we're gonna get to a ball
me forty three degrees today. Thumbs up for that. Huh yeah,
it is your Friday edition of the show. Of course,
the number to get in touch with us here on
the show is two seven h five three four forty
(00:44):
three oh eight. That's two seven oh five to three
four forty three oh eight. And here's the deal. I'm
gonna kind of break the show up again today. So
I'm actually recording this Thursday evening before I go to
hoop Fest for my Graves County broadcast. There are a
lot of basketball game going on on your Thursday evening,
so we won't have any any of that in the
(01:04):
first part of the show.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
What we will have.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Is our preview to Murray's championship football game. So the
first half of the show today we're gonna do preview
Murray's championship game, which is on Saturday, by the way,
for the three A state title, So we'll preview that.
I also have some thoughts on some other news stories
that kind of happened this week in sports in the region.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
I'll explain later.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
We'll kind of get into that too, So we'll kind
of have that here in the first part of the show.
Then I'm gonna go call my Graves game, gather scores
and information on my way home, and then when I
get home, I'll record the rest of the show, part
two of your Friday show, and we'll get into some
more basketball stuff in that part of the show.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Okay, So that's kind of how things are going to go.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
So with that said, we've got Murray playing for the
state title game on Saturday. In fact, the exact time
of that game, let me go ahead and take a look.
It is noon o'clock, so middle of the day on Saturday.
They take on Cal Christian Academy Louisville. Now, before we
get into the breakdown, before we start looking at and
(02:13):
examining exactly what's you know, the keys to the game
and where Cal's good and where Murray's good and what
has to happen for this game to go Murray's way
and vice versa. Before we look at that, just know
Murray's the underdog. That that's the most important thing to know.
They are the underdog. That's not me saying it. That's
not that's the entire state saying it. That is that
(02:35):
is people that are that. That's people that are around
the state that know the program cal that probably don't
respect our end of the state anyway, don't really respect uh,
you know, sports in our region. We are kind of
a forgotten and uh part of the region. I get it,
but uh, but that's people in the know. Those are
the experts. I'm not an expert. I just talk on
(02:57):
the radio. So those are the people that know. In fact,
I've seen some point spreads they've got col winning this game, like,
you know, forty eight to ten, forty eight to fourteen,
forty two to seven. So they think this is this
is going to be all col all night, all game,
lights out Murray. Maybe maybe, But you know, one thing
(03:20):
that Murray has done, especially in this playoff push, especially
in the last two weekends, they've kind of defied the odds.
They've kind of done it when they weren't supposed to
do it or when they weren't expected to do it.
You go back a couple of weeks ago when they
and again it was a home game, but they beat
Lexington Catholic. To be honest, they probably you know, Lexton
(03:43):
Catholic had been kind of favored then too by a
lot of the state people. Lexington Catholic was kind of
seen as the team that was going to come on
the road in the playoffs and get the win and
put Murray out and move on. And it took a
courageous overtime thriller to get it done.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
But Murray got it done.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
They found a way, they survived and advanced, and that's
kind of been the name of the game. And then
last week against Lloyd Memorial twenty seven to twenty ends
up being your final Murray's in a battle, disastrous third quarter,
should not have won the football game on the road.
Quarterback gets hurt. They're not throwing the football, They're not,
you know, able to do what's made them Murray made
(04:24):
them good all season.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
And then what happens.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
They find a way to win, They survive, in advance,
they win the football game two weeks in a row,
two scores won and overtime thriller at home. Want to
come back in the second half to overcome a bad
third quarter.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
On the road against the team in Lloyd Memorial.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
That again, the state experts said they can't win, They're
not going to win, they shouldn't win, and guess what
they did.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
They won.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
So it would be I guess detrimental for me on
this show to not at least say they've defied my
odds the last few weeks. They've surpassed my expectations. To
be honest, I kind of thought they would lose that
game two weeks ago to UH at home. I definitely
thought they were gonna lose last week. So I'm not
(05:19):
gonna sit here today and say, yeah, I can see
that they're a forty eight to fourteen underdog.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Yeah, it's probably Cow's probably just gonna just roll this game.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
I can't say that at all because Murray's not let
it happen, or at least not lost the games they
were supposed to lose the last two weeks. Now here's
the caveat can I say Murray's gonna win the football game?
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Not necessarily?
Speaker 2 (05:48):
On one hand, I don't think they're gonna get blown
out of the water. I don't think this is gonna
be Oh my goodness, col is undisputed, undeniable.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Murray has no shot.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
On the other hand, I'm I'm not gonna sit here
and go yeah, Murray should be the favorite. They're gonna
win the football game, because admittedly they're not the favorite.
Admittedly they shouldn't win the game. Let's look at these
two teams, col Christian Academy Louisville, the Centurions, Centurions whatever.
(06:20):
Christian Academy Louisville unbeaten on the season twice this season,
they have given up at least twenty or more points.
Every other game, they either shut out their opponent or
only allowed one score. Yeah, three times this season they
gave up at least twenty or more points. They never
(06:41):
gave up thirty or more in a game, and every
other time that means one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
Nine times this season their opponent scored one time or
less in fact shutouts one two, so two shutouts, and
then seven times they gave up one score.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Incredible.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Now, offensively, their least scored game the game they scored
the least in was a game against a very good
Bowling Green team who I've seen, who they beat twenty
seven to twenty four. That tells me a lot right there.
They beat Bowling Green. Of course, this was a home game,
(07:25):
twenty seven to twenty four. It's the fewest points they'd
scored in a game all year. Outside of that, outside
of Bowling Green holding them to twenty seven points, they've
scored at least thirty four points in every other one
of their games, and more often than not, they were
scoring around fifty points in a game, keep in mind,
(07:46):
while holding their opponent to six points seven points.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
So that's Cal. That's why they're favored so big. I
see it. I see why they're favored so big.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
But you know what, I've also seen Murray defy odds
the last few weeks. Looking at Cal, looking at what
they do their quarterbacks. Sophomore sophomore Wow Jackson Burke thirty
two hundred two yards passing on the season, forty eight touchdowns.
And listen to me when I say this one interception
(08:20):
that's two twenty nine a game. Forty eight touchdowns. That's
nearly four touchdown throwing a game, and not even an interception.
I'm like one on the season. Incredible. Their run game
and it's there. It's not amazing, it's there. Their top
two runners have both ran for over seven hundred yards.
(08:41):
They've got one rusher at seven seventy one that's fifty
five yards a game with six rushing touchdowns. He's not
the one that scores. Looks like he's one that kind
of gets them down the field. But the one that
scores is got seven hundred and fifty two yards rushing
on the season. That's fifty four yards per game, but
he has twenty rushing touchdowns. That's quite a different for
(09:02):
one guy to lead them in rushing but only have
six touchdowns. The other guy to lead them in touchdowns
by fourteen touchdowns but not in lead them in yardage.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
That's pretty incredible.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Their receiving corps, they've got really three you should be worried,
two at the top, but then they've got a third
that can get it done.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
They've got two juniors.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
In Brown and Howard that law firm has combined for
twenty three hundred plus yards receiving on the year, thirteen
seventy six for Brown, twenty two touchdowns. That's one fifteen
per game, and then Howard he is at one thousand
yards on the season, fourteen touchdowns. That's seventy one yards
per game. Their fourth leading receiver has four hundred and
(09:45):
twenty yards and four touchdowns. So again they do and
can throw it to other guys. But those two guys
do a lot of damage. Defensively, they have thirty three
defensive sacks on the year, one hundred and thirty three
tack for.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
A loss, eleven interceptions. Let's look at Murray.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Hih, I almost start defensively since I just gave you
those numbers. So thirty three sacks, one hundred and thirty
plus tackles for a loss. Murray defensively twenty eight sacks,
eleven tackles for a loss. Okay, ten interceptions, All right,
(10:27):
good stuff. Offensively, we all know that they're their top guy.
Why Robins thirty one hundred and ninety nine yards passing,
thirty five touchdowns, five picks on the season. That's two
twenty nine per game. Senior running back Bohmer at eight
hundred and ninety three yards rushing, thirteen rushing touchdowns, ten
(10:47):
rushing touchdowns. Though, for Simon Rickman and then Gage Chapman,
who had that monster game last week or in the
week before this game. He has five hundred and four
total yards in the season, eight touchdowns receiving wise, they
do have a couple of guys.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
You've got Isaiah Martin.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Who can put on quite the show twelve hundred and
thirty yards receiving, nineteen receiving touchdowns, eighty eight yards per game.
But Bridges Junior has eight hundred ninety seven yards non
touchdowns at sixty four per game. So offensively, there are
some similarities. There are some things you like and that
can match them with Cal. Defensively, it looks like there's
(11:24):
at least some similarities, but again Cal has been that
just monster in through a football this season.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
I think I saw.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
One of the final rankings in the regular season, if
you took classes out of the equation, Cal was like
a top three or four team in the entire state.
They've been a monster. They've been a behemoth. They've been
the top of the mountain. Murray's defined odds all season.
Who's gonna win this game? I think it's Cal. I'm
(11:58):
rooting for the Tigers. I'm not rooting against them. I'll
be paying attention to this game. I'll be following this
game and I'll be rooting for Murray throughout the entire game.
I like coach Cunningham. I like what they're doing over there.
We've got good, good listeners there. So I'm not saying
this to make anybody mad. I'm saying I don't think
they're gonna overcome Cal, but they've overcome a lot before.
(12:23):
So would I be shocked, And I would be shocked
a little surprised, not shocked. Do I think Cal's gonna
win fifty something to seven, No, but I do think
Kl's gonna win.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
But we'll see. Go Tigers.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Will be rooting for you, and uh listen. The sweetest
plate of crow I could eat during the entire eight
years of doing this show would be if you guys
go win that game on Saturday, and I come on
here on Monday and go, yeah, I was wrong. I
don't think I will, but I'd love to. We'll see
that's tomorrow, all right, Taking a break. This is part
(12:58):
one of the show. Part two the show coming up now.
Before we get into basketball. In part two, we do
have a local high school coach on the baseball side
that's faced some legal troubles.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
We haven't got to talk about it. In fact, we
haven't talked about it.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
I might talk about it, and part two we'll talk that,
we'll talk basketball, we'll talk more. This is your Friday
edition of the Region one Sports Report.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
The fastest growing local sports show in the region. This
is Region one Sports.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Page on Sports back here on this Friday edition of
the show. As we move along here we talked Murray
High football in segment one, their matchup for the state
title game on Saturday, and now we move our attention
to basketball.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
Here's kind of the deal. The other difficult.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
Part of doing this show at night, and as I
record this, it is now ten forty at night, so
it's late enough that you would expect some scores to
be available and more readily available, but apparently they're not,
So we don't have the scores that I was hoping
to have.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Now there were only a few games.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Going on in the region tonight anyway, so we'll kind
of talk about what we have or what we can get,
and then we'll kind of look at, you know, kind
of where things are as we go into the weekend,
and just some overall thoughts here on Region one so far,
but as far as scores go, we do have girls tonight.
Now again, I've been completely like it's been a long day.
(14:40):
It's been a really long day.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
I made kind of a mistake at work today. It
threw me off.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
I've been really trying to fix and make up for
it and just fix some things.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
So my attention hasn't quite been where it needs to
be and I apologize for that.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
This will get better. It takes time to adjust to this.
But we did have a couple of scores going on. Unfortunately,
I don't have my Lady Eagles score they at this moment.
I'm sure I'll have it at some point, probably right
as right when I get done recording. They went to
Lion County to not for their first game. However, we
do have Marshall County and Critton County. They played over
at hoop Fest in girls basketball and Marshall County got
(15:16):
the win fifty.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
Five forty five. I was there for most of it.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
I was setting up equipment and I was talking to people,
but I was watching as much as I could.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
And again, you know, it's a game.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Critton County has got a really good girls basketball team.
They're good, they're solid, they're going to compete in that
second region. I don't think they win the region. I
don't think they're that kind of a team, but they
are a good team and a very good first opponent
for the Lady Marshalls and the Leddy Marshalls look good.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
All the players we've.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Talked about here on the show, the depth that they
have their starting lineup. We saw wall make I saw
her make some plays in rebound and be a force
in the paint. I saw Kinsley Terry knockdown shots and
be a leader on that team. Eaton Sandlin, sand Lind
did her thing You've got, I mean, just players all
over the floor.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
Their depth showed. It showed through a little bit tonight.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
Granny County made a run and forgive me again, I
was watching but not able to really pay attention. Crianton
County made a little bit of a run. They would
kind of cut the lead in Marshall go back up ten.
Creendon County make a run and kind of get it
into a little bit of a ball game in Marshall
County to go back up ten. And that's kind of
how the game went. With Letty Marshall's winning fifty five
forty five. So I've had this theory on girls basketball
(16:31):
in the region. The best handem in the region is
it Callaway County, and they've started to have a third player.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Step up, and they're going to have to have that
most nights now.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
I actually think, and I was talking about this with
some people yesterday, I think Emery will be that player.
I think Angie Emory will be that player that will
kind of be in that mix as well for Callaway
County as as a third scoring option, third player. But
what Haines did obviously stood out, and I think she'll
be in the mix with Emry. I think they're going
(17:00):
to have maybe not one consistent player, but they've got
a couple of players that can step into that role
on any given night.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
Then you go to.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
Marshall County and I saw it tonight, maybe the best
one through five on the floor. Again, they don't have
a tandem of two better than Callaway's, but they might
be a little better three four, five spots on the floor.
And then again, I don't have the Graves score tonight,
and I'll see them for myself on Saturday, but my
theory with them has been maybe not one through five
(17:31):
as good as Marshall. Maybe definitely not one two punch
like Callaway, but maybe they've got one through nine, one
through ten better than anybody else in the region. So
that's kind of how we look at things or are
looking at things, and so far, I think that's kind
of what we're seeing on the girls side. So that's
one of your scores tonight, Marshall gets the win over
(17:52):
Crienneon County. On the boys side, I was again at
hoop Fest now m Kraken County went to Sports Center
at Owensboro. They played at five point thirty and until
thirty at nine. We don't have a score. But but
Graves County went to hoop Fest and they played. And
I've said this team's name wrong all not long. It's
a team out of Powder Springs, Georgia. They've lost one
(18:14):
game already this season, and it was too like the
fourth rinked team in the country.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
They are legit.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
They had height, they had size, they have athleticism. They've
got like three kids that are getting D one looks
and offers. I think every kid on the roster is
probably gonna go play college basketball. I mean, they were
very legitimate and Graves County for three quarters, two and
a half to three quarters. Played as good as you
could you could ask. And the thing about playing a
(18:42):
game like that, yeah, okay, they lost.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
Then they did lose. They lost by seventeen.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
It was you know, seventy two to fifty five ends
up being the final, all right, But that score did
not reflect two and a half three quarters of that
ball game. And you can call me a homer, and
you can say you're Magan excuse, you can do whatever
you want. Reality is, if you were you would have
seen the same thing. Graves got down. You know, they
led three to two out of the gate, they got
down ten.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
And I'll just be honest.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Talking to people that knew about the team they were
playing and knew Graves County, and even talking to some
people who are die hard Graves County, they.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
Would tell you, you.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Know what, man, if we just don't get blown out,
we might be all right. Man, if we can just
not get beat by forty, we might be all right.
And not only did they you know, again, the score
by the end of the game starts to stretch a
little bit, but it's a three to two game. Graves
led early, then they got down by like ten or
twelve in the first quarter.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
And then they came back and they.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
Forced their opponent, a very good opponent who can score
quickly and in bunches. They forced them to play their
style of basketball, and they got them to slow down
a little bit, and Graves made a lot of good
plays and had a lot of guys make plays, and
all of a sudden, it goes from a ten to
twelve point lead to a two point lead, three point lead,
one point lead, three point.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Lead, and they're in the game.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
They're within a shot almost the entirety of the in
the middle part of the game.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
And then in.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
The third quarter they come back and they take a
three point lead, and they hold that lead for a moment,
but then because their opponent does this, like I said,
can score the blink of an eye and score in bunches,
a six point swing ends up giving the team from
Powder Springs back the lead. They led by three, and
then at that point they stretched it out fifteen sixteen.
(20:33):
Graves made a run I think got it down to
eight or nine, as close as they could get it
at that point, and then you could just see the fatigue,
you could see the football guys from Graves legs just go.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
I mean, they just had no legs left.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
And again, yeah, it's part of it, and that's that
is making excuses. But for three quarters you watched that
team play and you went exactly what I was saying
about them to start the season. Maybe not the favorite,
but they are a contender. They are a contender in
First Region basketball because there is no team in First
Region as good as that team they played Tony, not
(21:07):
even McCracken. McCracken's really good. They're not that team. So
Graves showed what they can be. The Matt Kimbler error
got started off in a good way, even in a
seventeen point loss. They showed athleticism, they showed hustle, they
showed grit, they showed five guys boxing out at all.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Times, great defensive discipline.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
They showed a lot of good things, positive things against
a team that should have overmatched them from the tip
and didn't start overmatching them until the end.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Of the game.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
And so that's the best team they play all year.
It comes down from here. They don't have opponent the
rest of the year that's gonna give them that kind
of trouble, that kind of fit as the season goes on.
So that was something to see, something to watch, something
that was really positive, really good, really outstanding to see
for the Eagles tonight, even in a law so it
(22:01):
shows again, maybe not the contender that'd be McCracken, but
a contender. And I think again in these first few games,
you're seeing that from around the region. Again, I don't
have McCracken score tonight. I'm sure that'll be up in
the morning when you're listening to this show.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
It is what it is.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
But I think you're gonna see those you know, there's
a lot of parody in this region. I think that'll
show through and you're gonna have to bring it on
any given night. But kind of how we viewed these
teams going into the season, we're kind of seeing that
here in the first week. So again, girl's side, what
(22:36):
you're seeing is what we've been saying, callaway the best tandem.
Now they've got some third scoring options and a couple
of different players. Marshall maybe still the best starting lineup.
Saw that for myself tonight, Graves maybe the best depth.
On the boy's side, I think you're gonna see parody,
but I don't think it's crazy that Graves County was
ranked second or third in this region by most publications,
including this show, So it was exciting being in the
(23:01):
gym to not I said this before. It's like, I
don't know, there's something comforting about walking into a basketball gym,
smelting the popcorn, hearing the ball bounce, hearing the whistleblow,
Like there's just something that just takes you back to
good times, heartbreaks, whatever it may be, but there's just
something fun and familiar and relaxing about that.
Speaker 3 (23:24):
Even after a long day. And I had a long day.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
I had a day that started with an interview at
eight thirty, not a job interview, a media interview. And
then it as the day went on, I got a
few things done, had to walk them all eight thousand.
Speaker 3 (23:37):
Times to do it.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
And then I made a big mistake on social media
that was just didn't pay attention and it bit me
in the rear, and I'm having to deal with that
at seven o'clock at night getting ready for my broadcast,
and now I'm broadcasting and now here it is ten
fifty at night and.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
I'm recorded reregion.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Once. It's been a long day, but there's just something
relaxing and fun and comfort when you're at those ball
games and my juices got flowing again, and it just
gives you that second win, that second life for what
should be a fun basketball season. We're just getting started,
like I'm ready to go. I felt like I was
in mid season form to not probably wasn't, probably made
a lot of mistakes on the broadcast, but just mentally
(24:16):
you're locked into that place of like this is the sanctuary,
this is the getaway, this is the you know, it's
that old that Mary and Morris saw at my church,
Like this is this is I don't worship basketball, but
this is where I go and I can just have
that like this is fun moment.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
It's not work.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
I had somebody tell me, they're like, man, I can't
believe you're working all these jobs now and you're working
these hours and you're stretching yourself. Then I said, well,
there's you know, there's work, and then there's not. This
is not work. This is this is hobby. This is fun,
this is passion. This is twenty five years of my
life that I don't know if I'll ever be able
to let go of. And being in that gym tonight
(24:54):
for Game one, man, that confirmed it. It just did,
all right, So here's the deal with the rest of
the show. I want to touch on something none on
the court, on the field related that does relate to
sports in our region.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
And then in the third.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Segment, you know, I've had some people that didn't know
we've had some interviews already the season. I'm gonna have
to replay one because I'm just out of my voice
is going, it's getting late, and I just don't have enough.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
Scores to that. I just don't.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
So we're gonna replay our interview with coach Colin Doss
for Murray High. They've got their season started, and I'm
telling you it's a fantastic interview. So in case you
missed it, you'll get to hear that on the radio side,
and if you're on the podcast, you know, hey, look,
if you just want to finish up with this segment,
all right, if you've already heard it, great, but I
think it's worth a replay, and we're gonna have that
(25:47):
for you here in the third segment.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
So we're gonna hear from coach Doss here in a moment.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
Now, there was something that happened off the field and
people have asked me if I had a comment on
it and apparently suspended Paducah tilm In high scho baseball
coach Tremaine Donald return to court Thursday, having pleaded not
guilty to fourth degree assault with minor injury in November.
Here's my thoughts. I think number one, innocent until proven guilty.
(26:13):
I think number two, if something does happen in life,
if you make a mistake, I do think you get
second chance opportunities if you repent, pay your penance, and
you let time, he'll aw wounds. Yeah, I think there's
coming back from things like that.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
There should be.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
You should have opportunity. Everybody makes mistakes, some obviously worse
than others, some obviously more harsh than others. And I'm
not saying you get totally returned to your former glory,
but I'm saying you get an opportunity at least move
on from that at some point.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
So that's my comment, But it's hard to see with
something being so public, if it goes away, it's still
with something that was so public and on the public's mind,
there's still gonna be a lot of doubt and a
lot of mistrust in a lot of people going forward.
So I don't know what's gonna happen. But that's my comment.
(27:06):
It did you know that that is in the news.
It is a coach in the region. It is something
that we've got to talk about. Listen, We've had basketball
coaches lose their jobs for DUI's for that, that's it.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
For DUI's.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
We've had, uh you know, We've had basketball coaches lose
lose their job because they were arrested for DUI and
the charges were dropped. They didn't have enough to convict
they they went back and said, okay, never mind, and
they still lost their job.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
So I'm not advocating for it.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
I'm just saying, as people have said, what do you
think is gonna happen. I just don't know if the
path back. I don't know what that looks like. Maybe
maybe there is one.
Speaker 3 (27:43):
I don't know. We'll see. Time will tell.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
I'm not advocating for it. I'm just commenting on what's
in the news, and that's that's in the news. All right,
that's gonna wrap things up for this portion. We'll take
a break, we'll come back, we'll hear from coach Toss.
We'll re re air his interview for you in case
you missed it. It's worth listening to. And that'll wrap
us up on this Friday. Back on Monday with a
recap of the weekend and a lot more. Enjoy your weekend,
(28:06):
Be safe, stay warm. We'll talk to you then. This
has been Region one Sports.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
You were listening to the Region one Sports Report on
ninety nine to five the fan.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
All right back here.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
On the Region one Sports Report talking with Murray High
School boys basketball coach Colin DAWs coach. First of all,
thanks for joining us, our first chance to get to
talk since you've been back in the region and now
a head coaching in.
Speaker 4 (28:37):
A local high school. Yeah, it's great. It's definitely a
different peal. But now I'm on this show as a
coach and not a player anymore, so it's pretty nice.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
Yeah, don't make me feel older than I am by
knowing that we covered your playing days and now you're
coaching these kids.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Not too old. It's a quick ride in the coaching career,
I guess.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
Yeah, pretty much. Just explain to people before we get
into the Murray stuff. I played to people like kind
of where your journey went post Saint Mary getting into
coaching and now kind of getting back into Murray.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
Yeah, so I went and played Division III basketball Western
University decided. I got into the coaching game early, So
my freshman year of college, I started coaching AAU basketball
and was a program director and built a program to
be one of the more respectable AAU programs in the
state of Kentucky, which was nice because I was only
eighteen years old coaching seventeen year olds, which was great.
(29:30):
And then as I went on, I was playing in
the winter and coaching in the summer, just traveling across
the country. I've been fortunate enough to make a lot
of really cool connections that are now Division one coaches.
I've got to work with a lot of Division one
programs in the summers. That's kind of how I got
my start. Then it led to my first college job,
where I was the head assistant men's basketball coach at
Brushton University and NAI and Wanboro, Kentucky. I was there
(29:54):
for about a year and a half, almost two years,
and then was fortunate enough to be hired of the
headman's basketball coach at John Novin College last year. So
I packed my bags from Orangeboro and moved about nine
hours down to pennscoloby'ch Florida, where I was tasked with
starting up not necessarily just being hired and rebuilding a program,
but starting up from scratch a college basketball program. And
(30:17):
I was the youngest coach in the nation last year,
head coach in the nation last year twenty three, So
I was very fortunate for that, and it was great.
It was a great time down there, fortunate enough to
win twenty five games, had the number one offense in
the country last year for our division. Just a lot
of amazing things happened that a lot of people said
would not happen down there. So it was a blessing
(30:40):
in disguise. And now it led me right back here,
right back home to Murray, and I couldn't be more excited.
Murray's a great school, great tradition of excellence in all sports.
Our football teams still rolling, our soccer team had a
great year. So I guess now it's time to turn
around the boys basketball program.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
I was gonna kind of get to that, like obviously,
but you know, there was an open job at Murray,
and then you put in and gets you back in
the area. But it's also a school, you know, it's
a quote unquote small school, but there's opportunity there, there's
athletes there, there's resources there. So I'm sure that had
to be exciting as well to know you're not only
coming back in the area, you're coming back to the
school that has one in the region and can compete
on that level every year.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
Yeah, of course, So I mean kind of like I
stayed earlier for a full season. I've only coached college
basketball before, so coach in high school basketball, not in
an AA concept or AAU season, is new to me,
and I never really pictured me being a high school coach.
I always wanted to be a college basketball coach, and
of course I was successful with that, which which I'm
(31:42):
very blessed for that. But it was just something about Murray. Obviously.
I always thought it would be cool to come back
and coach high school in Kentucky, just because of how
awesome caches AA is and the community support and all
that good stuff in western Kentucky. But I never really knew,
you know that, I that I wanted to do it
so soon, and when Murray opened up, I got asked
(32:03):
by a couple of people to apply for the job
if I'd be interested in it. And I was like, heck, yeah,
Murray's a great job. And I was fortunate enough. I
was very nervous. I was very very nervous putting in
for the job. I was like, man, am I not
going to get this job? I just I never knew
I couldn't. I couldn't get any cracks from anybody. And
I was fortunate enough as Greenfield gave me a call
(32:24):
and I was I was actually on the beach that
night when she gave me the call, and I was
just I was just jumping for joy. It was amazing.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
So let's talk about this season specifically, I mean, because
it's all you really know. You weren't here last season,
but it was a team that was kind of going
through some growing pains and kind of having to reset.
But you've got a lot of talent, You've got a
lot of upside going into the season. Talk about your
team and what you see out of them going into
this year.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
Yeah, so we pretty much for the most part, have
everybody back, which I'm very excited for to build off
of last year. These guys, the guys now that are
seniors and some juniors. It was fortunate enough to win
with coach Curtis coach Ui Curtis here won a couple
region won all Ay championships, so you know, they they've won,
(33:09):
but they've never had to really win as the leaders.
And last year they were they were really young. There
are a lot of juniors. I think only one senior
last year, so those guys got an opportunity to grow
and get that varsity experience early as sophomore than juniors
and even some freshmen. Uh now they're getting here a
year older. A lot of them got bigger, a lot
(33:30):
of them got stronger, and we really hit a lot
of player development this summer. So getting your whole team
back essentially and having on bigger, stronger, faster in a
brand new system and a brand new style of play,
it's very very exciting. Plus we got some new freshmen
that came in that transferred into us that'll be big
for us. So I'm really excited about this season and
(33:50):
just the guys that we have coming back in general,
I think it's a lot to build off of. Yeah,
I was gonna say, you know, you've been on that college.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Circuit and and that's where you kind of can recruit
players and bring players in at the high school level
that you kind of are dealt with what you have.
What's been kind of the biggest challenges there as far
as like do you feel like you're having to adjust
anything or do you feel like you have the personnel
to run what you kind of always want to run.
Speaker 4 (34:12):
I definitely believe I have the personnel, And honestly, it's
a great change of speed. I have a lot more
free time now that I'm not having to get on
phone calls and recruit and to podcasts like all this
crazy college basketball stuff. So I get a lot more
free time, which gives me a lot more time to
kind of help my craft a little bit as a coach.
So I feel like I've definitely gotten better and grown
(34:34):
even more as the coachins i've been here. So it's
definitely a nice change of pace. But I believe our system,
the system that I ran in college, the system that
I've always ran, it's kind of a mix that I've
learned from Shaka Smart when I first started coaching. I
believe that it's just I mean, it's really personnel based,
and I think we have the personnel do that. And
it's also more of a mentality and an energy and
(34:56):
just giving the effort to do so. You don't necessarily
really need the fastest guys or the smallest guys or
the best shooters in the world to run the system
that we run. It's just about energy and effort and
then the mindset of getting defensive stops and getting turnovers
and forcing the pace. So I'm excited to see how
it turns out. You may ask me this again in
(35:17):
January and February, and I may say, Hey, we're going
to look to play in the twenties and thirties next year.
But I'm excited about it. I'm excited about our personnel
and moving forward of trying to run the system, taking
it from college to high school. I think it'll be
a good thing for the game.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
So as a fan of somebody, you know, they're obviously
that everybody's gonna be new to what you do as
a coach and new to what's going on this year
a murray. But as a fan, when they show up
to the gym, what are they in for, what is
the style of play? What what are they going to be?
What are they gonna be watching this year?
Speaker 4 (35:43):
I guess, Well, definitely gonna be fast paced. Of course,
there's gonna be times where we're gonna have to mix
it up, and I like to like the real definition
of what I call the system that we kind of
run is controlled a tempo, but controls h We don't
necessarily want to take quick shots like you hear NBA guys,
(36:04):
college head coaches, some even high school head coaches all
the time saying we want to play fast, and usually
that means, hey, we want to shoot thirty forty three
is a game. We want to play fast. That's not
necessarily me We want to make sure we get the
best shot possible on the offensive end. We just want
to play fast and speaking up on the defensive end.
So it's a little different, you know, a lot Like
I said, a lot of people want to shoot threes
(36:25):
and have quick offense and shoot within ten seconds and
all that, But we just want to make sure we
maximize our effort and efficiency on the offensive side and
speed teams up defensively. So it's going to be exciting.
We hope it's the most exciting thirty two minutes in
the region. But there's a lot of really good teams
out here too that may have a little more excitement.
But we'll see. We're we have some goals that we
(36:47):
want to accomplish, and I'm excited for that. I'm excited
to see how it works out.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
You guys have one of the more unique small gyms
in the region. It can really create a really cool
home court advantage. You kind of played at one of those,
and there's the bigger gyms you will be on the
road playing in, but kind of talk about that, like,
like what's that environment like and how much fun is
that when you get that advantage.
Speaker 4 (37:10):
So it's actually quite funny. There's some days in the
week if if we let out of practice earlier, we
have an early practice. I sometimes sit in the gym
and just look around and look at the gym, like,
I absolutely love Taylor. It is is great Taylor Gymnasium.
It rocks. Like so I do some assistant ad stuff
as well. So I'm at volleyball games and all this stuff,
(37:32):
and you know, they don't necessarily have standing room only
crowds at some of these volleyball games, and it's still
like really loud in there. Last week we had a
middle school tournament and in the finals it was Graves
County in Paris, so it wasn't packed, it was there
was not many people there, but it was still crazy loud.
So I'm excited to experience a Murray callaway game standing
(37:53):
room only, hopefully mccrack and Murray games standing room only, whatever,
just pack in the seats. I'm excited to experience that.
For myself. I don't know if the players will be
able to hear me, and I don't know if I'll
be able to hear my players, but it'll it'll make
some great memories and exciting times. For sure. I love it.
I enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
You look around, and I'm sure you're gonna give me
the coach answer on this, but when you look around
the region, have you have you had a chance to
kind of evaluate what's out there and kind of you
know where the region kind of stands going to the season,
or is it just give me one game, one week
at a time.
Speaker 4 (38:25):
So we actually as the team. As a coach, it's
a little bit different, of course, but as a team,
we adopt a lot of people say want to know
everyday mentality, but we talk about beat yesterday. We just
want to focus on the present and we want to
just be better than we were yesterday. So in that sense,
we just want to be want to know, and we
(38:46):
want to beat Yesterday every single day. But I've been
fortunate enough where we've got to check out some of
the guys, some of the teams in preseason scrimmages, and
also some teams in the summer. So I'm excited about
the region. I think it's gonna be very that it is.
Of course, you have McCracken County, They're gonna be a
great team. I got to Washington Saturday and they already are.
They look like they're in mid season form. They're ready
(39:08):
to go. But you know, a lot of other people,
it's just you don't know. You don't know what could happen.
That's what I was telling our guys yesterday. Actually, I said,
you could either end up at one or two this year,
or you can end up at fourteen to fifteen. You
never know. There's a lot of talent around the region,
and it's a lot of equal talent compared to usual,
if that makes sense. So of course last year you
(39:29):
had a great team in Callaway County. You had a
really good team in Marshall County. So like this year,
I just I think there's a lot of equalness across
the board, and I'm excited to see that. Of course,
with McCracken sticking out, this is a little bit in front.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
So you mentioned earlier goals, you know, accomplish those goals.
Speaker 3 (39:48):
What are the goals in your one?
Speaker 2 (39:49):
What are the things that you're you're hoping to get
out of your team?
Speaker 3 (39:51):
Your program?
Speaker 4 (39:53):
Uh? Yeah, So I guess the most part is you're
trying to rebuild a program. You're you're taking over a
program that's nine that had nine wins last year and
their returning everybody, so of course they kind of had
that some of them kind of had that negative mentality
or the losing mentality. They just felt like they weren't
good enough, and coming into that, we really got to
when I got the job, we've got to shift that
(40:14):
mindset over back to its winning waves, which is great.
These guys are bought in, they're ready to go, they're
playing hard every day. So I'm excited to see that.
That was one of the big goals that I had,
is just shifting and trying to get that culture shift
back over in year one, and it's happening a lot
quicker than what we expected as a staff, which is great,
which is great. So we hope that you know, these
(40:36):
other goals of winning trophies and all this other stuff
comes into play later on down the line. Of course,
I think one of our biggest goals that's a little
bit earlier in the season is winning the two A
sectional since we moved so of course, Murray kind of
dominated that one A region for a little while with
coach s Fleener and coach Curtis. I think they won
(40:57):
like eleven regional all A, which is great, and then
we move up to two A and we haven't got
one yet. So I would absolutely love to win a
two A section. And there's a lot of really good
teams in there in Union County, Tillman, Callaway, Hopkins, Central Webster,
so there's a lot of really talented teams. So if
we can win that and go to two A state tournament,
that would be great. But of course we know nothing's guaranteed.
(41:19):
But I also think our guys want to be playing
right back in our home home turf at CFSB this
winter as well.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
So all right, coach, well, looking forward to it, excited
for the future of Murray basketball, and excited to have
you back in the region.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
Yeah, of course, I'm excited to be back. I hope
everything goes as planned. We'll always see you. You always
know adversity hits, so we'll see how we tackle adversity
a little bit. But I'm very excited for this season.
I'm very excited for the region.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
Best of luck this year. We'll see you down the road.
