Before the jokes hit the stage, Clint Coley sits down to explain why this podcast exists. In this prelude, he breaks down the meaning behind Rent’s Due — the name, the mindset, and the pressure that comes with both. From the grind of stand-up to the personal moments that inspired his next comedy special, Clint gets real about what’s at stake and why he’s putting it all on the line. Funny, raw, and unapologetically honest — this is where the journey begins.

All right, cameras, yes, yes, all right, hit the red.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Button, hit the red button, hit the red button, hit
the red button.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Making sure you can hear me. Let me make sure
that recording.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Boom boom boom. All right, all right, here we go,
Here we go, Here we go five four three two one. Hey,
check this out. This is the prelude episode. Prelude means
that the podcast is coming, but we're here right now.
Prelude episode to the rents Do podcasts. Now, let me

(00:57):
explain to y'all what the rents Do podcast is real quick.
I know y'all tied the podcast. I know everybody and
they mom got a podcast. Blah blah blah blah blah.
But let's have a conversation. This podcast is directly connected
to my brand new special that I am recording on.
I don't have a date yet, but I will be

(01:17):
recording in April or May of twenty twenty six. I
am going on tour and I'm also filming a brand
new special.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Now, let's start here.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
The last special that I recorded was back on July
twenty second, twenty twenty two. That special did not get
released until October twenty twenty three. Took a long time
because I'm not gonna lie. I did not have the
money to get it edited. Once I finally did get

(01:51):
it edited, then you saw it. My edible kicked in.
It came out on YouTube, and you guys, because I'm
releasing this not only just on audio, and I'm also
releasing it on YouTube. But you guys did a great
job by making sure we random numbers up. That special
ended up getting five hundred thousand views, and over about

(02:11):
two to three months it got the attention of Kevin
Hart's Heartbeat Company, ended up putting it up on there,
and now it's on to be and now it's on Peacock.
So my edible kicked in. You can watch it. I
was fattering that in that special shirt off suit. I
got the idea from Bobby Brown. But now we're at

(02:32):
the new special. This is by the time I record,
this will be four years later. Now a lot has
happened in the last four years, all right, Number one,
I have two kids now. I already had Anaya back
when I recorded the special. Actually, in some of the
deleted footage, Anaya is in the footage.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
I'll probably i'll show that another time, right.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
But on top of that, deleted footage and Anaya being
there now when I have a new daughter, right her
name is Arib, so there is Arib and Anaya.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Last, but not least, I'm married. I'm married.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
I'm doing the ya yo dance. I hope I'm still
in focus. My daughter Anaya is directing this right now.
And since you're in the background, I'm gonna be honest
with you. Could do me if it was just make
sure the door is closed, so that the so that
the audio is insulated.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Just close the door. That's all you gotta do. There
you go. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Nonetheless, though, the new special and the tour is going
to be called rents do. Now, let me tell you, guys,
how I came about that name.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Tony Braxton nineteen ninety two.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
I'm in the car and I believe I'm drunk or high,
probably high because I don't drive drunk. Nonetheless, I'm in
the car and I'm listening to Love should have brought
you home last night. As a matter of fact, Anaya,
you can confirm this because Anna, you were.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
In the car when I was when we were listening
to it.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
So she's listening to the we're all listening to We're
both listening to the song, It's okay. Rib is in
the background. She's allowed to she's allowed to make noise.
It's okay, relax, give her another cookie anyway. And I
was in the car when I was listening to the song,
And as I'm listening to the song, I'm saying to myself, Yo,

(04:23):
Tony Braxton is singing like the rent is fucking due.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
The rent is fucking due.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
When you, first of all, when you hear somebody doing
something like the rents do to me, in my mind,
that means that your life depends on it. If you're
doing something like the rent is due to me, that
means your life depends on it means that, look, if
you don't pay the rent, you gonna be out on
the streets. And when I heard Tony Braxton nineteen ninety

(04:56):
two singing love should have Brought You Home last night
on the fucking Boomerang soundtrack, in my opinion, like I
told y'all, she was singing like the rents do. Then
she follows it up with her first album, and y'all
know the song how Men.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
New Ay's I Love You.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
She's singing like the rent is due. Her first album,
Her Life depends on it. That is how I'm going
into this next special, and that's where my jokes is
coming from, and that's how I'm telling my jokes. I
am telling jokes like the rent is fucking due, and
I'm gonna tell you why because I'm angry and I'm

(05:37):
not playing with y'all this time. Right, I wasn't playing
the last time. Actually I kind of was, right, my
edible kick. That is playful, it's funny, it's he he
hahih blah blah blah blah blah. And look, the jokes
are gonna be he hot hot this time. But also
you gotta remember it, right, in the last four years,
a lot's happened. My life has completely changed. So yes,
I have material about my kids. Yes I have material

(05:58):
about my wife.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Yes, I am.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Giving you the most brutally honest Clint Coley You've ever seen.
And I am telling jokes like my life depends on it.
I need this special to work. I need this special
to do numbers. The reason why is because now I
need to be.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Out of there. At this point, I'm sick of this.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
I'm sick of being one hit away from being that guy.
I'm coming I'll never forget Kanye West. He says, act
like I ain't had the belt in two classes. If
I don't got it, I'm coming after whoever who has it.
I'm coming after whoever who has it. You see what

(06:41):
you see, see the see the player on words. I'm
coming after whoever who has it. Meaning I'm coming after
whoever has the title. But I'm coming after whoever.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Who has it. He wants to know who has the belt.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
I'm coming for the WWE Championship belt. I'm going to
I'm coming for the WBC, the w b O, the
IBF Championship, the Undisputed Championship.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
One two three, Ding fucking ding, fucking ding.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
I'm sorry, I'm cursing so much, but now you're getting
the tone of where I'm coming with this, paulse With
that being said, though, I'm not gonna be angry in
this podcast.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
We're gonna have some fun. I'm bringing on guests.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
We're gonna talk shit, we're gonna laugh, we're gonna cry.
Because here's the thing, right, I'm going Every week, I'm
giving you a new episode so that you can know
where I'm at mentally, emotionally, physically, wherever you're going to
know where I'm at in my life for the rest
of this, for the remainder of me going into the tour,

(07:51):
to me recording this special, to me trying to sell tickets,
because let me tell y'all something, man, I tried to
do my Edible War off tour and it didn't work
at all.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
It didn't land.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
And the main reason is, you know, I think that
with me, you know, I'm trying I was trying to
do I was trying to do too much, you know
what I'm saying.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
Like, I tried to go into my.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Edible War off tour last year and I was having
a baby, I was getting married, and I'm gonna be
honest with you, I was stressed out.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
I was stressed out. I didn't feel like promoting.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
I didn't feel like doing a whole bunch of other stuff,
and people weren't buying tickets.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
So we had nothing to do. We had nothing to
deal with or nothing. We had nothing. We had no
people in the stands.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
So I had to cancel a whole bunch of shows
and I had to get my mental right.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
I'm right now, I'm ready. I'm ready.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
So if you subscribe to this podcast, and you listen
to this podcast. You are going to be the first
to know when I have tickets available.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
You're going to be the.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
First to know what cities I'm going to when I'm
coming there, And on top of that, you're going to
have access to buy your tickets first. But that's let's
let's go, let's go, let's go a step behind again.
You're going to know where I am mentally, physically, emotionally,
and your maybe you can relate, maybe you feel like

(09:08):
the rent is due, maybe I can tell you, you know what,
whatever you're going through, whatever you're dealing.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
With, it don't fucking matter.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
And the reason why it doesn't matter is because you
know you are going to buckle down and you're going
to say, you know what, I'm going to perform and
I'm going to do what I'm supposed to do, like
the rent is due, because no matter what, the rent
is always due. Landlords don't care about your sob story.

(09:36):
Landlords don't care that you I didn't have no shows
this month. Landlords didn't care about They don't care about anything.
You know what they care about. They care about the
bottom line. They care about whether or not you are
paying your rent. And paying it on time. Am I
right or wrong? My right or wrong? So with that
being said, that's where I'm at in this podcast, and

(09:58):
that's where I'm at going into this special. The rent
is do. I'm gonna give you an example. I'm working
on a joke right now. I'm gonna give you give
you an example. I'm working on a joke right now,
working on a joke right now. The joke is about
the fact that so back in early June. I'll never
forget this. It was the day before the Roots Picnic.

(10:19):
So I'm gonna say I think that was May thirty first.
It is either yeah, May thirty first, it was that
Friday before the Roots Picnic May thirty first. I get
a call and let me know if I'm wrong. It
could be May thirty first, it could be June first.
But I got a call from my doctor and they
told me that your A one sea level is fifteen.
For those of y'all that don't know what an A

(10:40):
one sea level is, that's your sugar Your blood sugar
level my Jawn was eighteen, me fifteen. The average person
who just has diabetes period their blood sugar level is
around eight seven.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Mineus fifteen.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
So now I realize, yo, man, I have diabetes and
I need to eat correctly. I need to eat and
I need to exercise, and I need to do what's
right like the rent is do. So what ends up
happening is though, now I gotta take this drug called metaforman.
I take it twice a day, two thousand milligrams per

(11:18):
day of me actually doing what I'm supposed to do
to make sure I'm okay.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Now, true story.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
I go into the pharmacy, and I'll never forget the lady.
You know, older black women, older black women now, the
older Now, the joke is about how older black women
will tell you the truth no matter what. She sees
that I'm getting metaforming. She knows what that drug is,
and she says, oh, I see you got that sugar.

(11:46):
I see you got that sugar. Who the fuck you
talking to? I didn't say that, no old black women.
But at the end of the day, and then she says,
if you keep messing around, you gonna get your foot
cut off.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
And she's not lying, she's not lying.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Older Black women say what's on their mind, and you
better not say nothing back because here's the thing, right,
older Black women loves they young black men and want
to make sure that they hear for their kids and
make sure that we're here because we are needed in society.
It's a joke I'm working on. That's not the punchline.
I'll figure it out later. But again, I told you,
you're gonna find out where I am emotionally.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Physically and mentally.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Physically, Yeah, I got diabetes and physically I'm going to
do better and physically, Black men, you need to start
going to the doctors more. And the reason why you
need to stop going to the start going to the
doctors more so you know what's going on. My wife
had to make me go to the doctors. As a
matter of fact, let me give you another step. But
go and step forward. The day of our wedding. The

(12:46):
day of our wedding, we're ready, we're walking. We're about
to walk in, you know, to you know, when you
walk into the reception in the bride and groom. Hey hey,
hey hey ude, So long story short. Before while we're waiting,
my wife said, Clinton, can you make me two promises.
Number one, can you get a viseecta be? Can you

(13:06):
get av sector be?

Speaker 3 (13:07):
Right?

Speaker 2 (13:08):
And I said yeah, because I ain't having no more kids.
But then she said, can you make sure that you
go to the doctors, because I want to make sure
that you're okay because I need you here for me
and I need you here for yourself and I need
you here for our girls.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
And she wasn't lying.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
So I did both and here we are, so again,
you're going to know everything that's going into what this
special is about to be about now before I actually
released this special, right, I'm releasing a series of mixtapes.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
I told you earlier in the year I was doing that.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
I did maybe like four I'm doing it again, right,
and here's why, and I'm gonna tell you the title
of it.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
So I had a guy. He hit me up.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
He says, yo, Clint, you know, let's take a meeting
about management right now. As he's saying this to me, right,
as he's saying this to me, I'm like, all right,
bet we have the meeting.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
I actually had to get uber.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
I spent like seventy dollars to get to this meeting,
right because thirty five their thirty five back go to
the meeting. It was a great meeting at least, so
I thought, right, So I thought He's like, Yo, give
me a couple of days to think about it, and
I'll get back to you. This past tuesday, so I'm
time stamping this. Today is Thursday, August seventh, So Tuesday

(14:23):
August fifth. He sends me an email early in the
morning and says, Hey, Clinton, as a matter of fact,
you know what, Now give me my phone so I
can read exactly read you exactly what the email said.
I'm gonna read you exactly what the email said, just
so you know, it doesn't matter either phone. I got
my email on them, right, let me send it. Don't
walk in the frame. No, you're fine, all right, here

(14:44):
we go, you know. Also also also also on top
of that, on top of that, you know right now
I'm being to stay at home dad. But that's neither
here nor there. We'll get to that in about two minutes,
all right. So he says, this is exactly what he said.
He says, Clint, thanks for your patience. I think you
are tremendously talented, But I think the timing is it

(15:07):
right for me to be managing you right now. I
think I will be able to help once there's a
little bit more momentum. Let's stay in touch. Fuck you, Yeah,
I said it, fuck you right, and not the fact.
Here's why, because if you're going to pass on me,
I respect that right.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
But to tell me I don't have a lot of momentum,
what are you talking about?

Speaker 2 (15:31):
I got a comedy special that got over half a
million views and it's better and oh a, mind you
it got more views than a lot of people's comedy
special who's on Netflix?

Speaker 3 (15:41):
Right?

Speaker 2 (15:42):
I have a Savage Xfinity brand deal, right, I have
multiple things and I've sold two shows in life. What
do you mean I don't have any momentum? What do
you mean? If I don't have momentum? Who does?

Speaker 3 (15:56):
So?

Speaker 2 (15:56):
The next series of comedy mixtapes that's coming out is
called momentum. I'm calling it momentum because I ain't playing.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
I'm mad. I'm mad.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
I'm mad, and when I get mad, I don't get upset.
What that lokoj say in nineteen eighty seven, the year
I was born. He says, not bitter or mad, just
proven I'm bad. Give me a you want to hit,
give me an hour plus a pen and a pad.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
Let me let that.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Let me let you hear that one more time. Not
bitter or mad? Just prove it. I'm bad. You want
to hit give me an hour plus a pen and
a pad. That's how I'm coming with these with this momentum. Now, monsieur,
you want momentum, I got some momentum for your ass,
and I ain't pausing that. So again, you are going
to know where I am emotionally, mentally, and physically. Right now,

(16:51):
I'm trying to record this while my two daughters are
right here in the studio because my wife is working
all day.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
It's called partnership, it's called tag team.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
But also being a stay at home dad is not
for the week, and it also makes you feel like
you less than because you know, at the end of
the day you supposed to your your your wife is
supposed to be a stay at home mom, or that's
what society teaches you.

Speaker 3 (17:11):
But we don't do that over here.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
I have I have days where I don't have to
be I don't have to go into an office, I
don't have to work, I don't have to do all
this stuff.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
So what do I do? What do I do?

Speaker 2 (17:22):
I make sure that my girls are okay, but also
y'all gonna be here and y'all gonna work while we're here,
and now after after I'm done recorded, can you do
me a favor and change her diaper?

Speaker 3 (17:33):
Yeah, you're gonna hear all this.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
I'm gonna have guests on, We're gonna talk, We're gonna
have a good time. We're gonna under You're gonna understand you.
I'm not fucking playing with y'all. I'm not playing. So,
like I said, this is the prelude to the podcast.
I hope y'all listen. This is for you guys to subscribe.
This prelude is gonna come out on Monday, August August eleventh,

(17:58):
and then after each week week after that. You are
going to get how I feel, what I'm going through,
what I'm dealing with, and we are going to sell
out these shows coming next year. All right, rent is
fucking due. You understand me, Anya, The rent is due.

(18:20):
Rib The rent is due. Anybody listening to the podcast,
the rent is due. Thank y'all for listening, Thank y'all
for laughing. This podcast episode is over.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
