Becoming a Spectacle: Does the Doc Change How We See WM9? #wwe

In this episode, Maria & Carlos dive into the documentary *“Becoming a Spectacle: The Making of WrestleMania IX”* and compare what happened behind the scenes to the matches we recommended (or didn’t!) during our original WrestleMania 9 episode.

Did backstage politics impact who won what? And does knowing how it all came together change how we feel about Bret vs. Yoko, Taker vs. Giant González, or that wild Hogan finish? We break it all down — from production drama to creative choices — and ask:

Does the spectacle hold up, or does the documentary expose WrestleMania IX for what it really was? Should you watch this if you’re a: * New fan wondering if WrestleMania 9 is worth visiting * Longtime fan curious about the behind-the-scenes drama *

Viewer of our original WM9 show — that enjoys revisiting everything with fresh eyes!

Don’t forget to comment with your favorite (or least favorite) moments from WrestleMania IX and let us know: Did the documentary change your opinion too?

Speaker 1 (00:08):
Hey, welcome, we are revisiting the mania of WrestleMania Rewatch podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
I'm Carlos and I'm Maria your residence Mark and Training.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
And today, guess what we get to revisit ourselves or
an episode of ourselves, WrestleMania nine because of the newest
documentary that came out becoming a spectacle, the making of
WrestleMania nine.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
That's right, lucky, you get to revisit with us. And
as you know, I have more charisma than Hogan had
creative control in nineteen ninety three.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
That's a lot of charisma. That's a lot of And
so we're gonna go ahead and break down this documentary.
Did We got some interesting tidbits, not only about how
WrestleMania nine came about, but also about some particulars of
the matches, some dirt behind why something happened, why hal

(01:07):
Coogan was brought back in, why Mister Perfect may have
been sandbagging Lex Luger, Why the Giant Gonzales had no
body suit with random swatches of fir. We'll get into
all of that and more.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, I'm excited here we have my tag team partner.
He is the diesel to my Seawn Michaels the brains
to my good looks, and the only guy here who remembers,
like he just said, Giant Gonzalez is body. So so
let's get into it.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah. So WrestleMania nine the first WrestleMania that took place outdoors. Right,
we got a little bit more tidbits. But did you
see anything that you that stood out to you as
you being our resident marketing training?

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Wow, since we're going into the archives, we actually covered
this WrestleMania nine last year. So if you have not
watched that revisiting the mania WrestleMania nine, please make sure
that after you watch this you go back and do
a revisit with us. So, WrestleMania nine becoming a spectacle?

(02:20):
What did I notice? Did you mention it was premiered
April eleventh?

Speaker 1 (02:26):
No, I didn't mention a date or anything like that.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Okay, so we all know that this was flashy, fun,
full of questionable commentary as you would think, as we know,
it was definitely a wild ride and a lot of fun.
I just remember a lot of those exciting things that
we saw first time that we watched it, which is

(02:48):
one Bobby Heenan writing backwards on that camel and then
we get to see some details as to why he
did it.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Did you want no go ahead? It was like Bobby
the Brain heenan is he lived up to his moniker
of the Brain. That man studied wrestling from the nineteen fifties,
so he's already all we here, we're in nineteen nineties.
He's like thirty something years of studying wrestling and many
more years of being in the business. So for him

(03:19):
to know his character and to be like, you know what,
it will probably be funnier and nothing's gonna happen. No
one's gonna boom me, no one's gonna no one's gonna
hate me even more than I'm already hated as the
color commentator on TV. What if I write this comment
this camel backwards? And it was like the most hilarious thing.

(03:40):
And we do talk about how it was Bobby the
Brain like to just come out and give us some comedy,
comedic relief by coming out on the camel backwards.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
He pulled it off. It was hilarious and all more
hilarious that we are setting the stage, or Vince McMahon
is setting the stage in Las Vegas. So this is April,
like we said nineteen ninety three. Vince McMahon is like,
what if we take this outdoors in Vegas, stress everyone

(04:13):
in Togas and pretend it's the Roman Empire, but with
elbow drops, right, you know? So then we see Bobby
the brain Heenan coming up backwards on a camel, which
was hilarious. He definitely pulled it off. What else did
you notice?

Speaker 1 (04:28):
I noticed that this WrestleMania pretty much was sent in
motion five years before nineteen ninety three. They talk about
how they wanted to get they needed a promoter. They
were having hard time being getting someone to promote this
boxing match between Sugar Ray Leonard and I forgot the
guy's name, but his last name is leland or Lelande,

(04:50):
depending on who you believe in this documentary and how
you pronounced this guys last name. But Vince had always
wanted to get into boxing motion and we had covered
this when we did the review of the mister McMahon
documentary on Netflix. He had interned or he had a
job with Bob Aram, so he did have some experience

(05:12):
as a bouncing promoter. He may have set a him
up for failure on some of those promotion things that
he did, especially with the one with what's that the
double I forget what the stunt guy his name. I'm
thinking about super Dave but who. Yeah, but if you

(05:33):
guys can jog my memory, or if my memory doesn't
get jogged by then please leave it in the comments there. Yeah,
so he said, babar him up. So but so they
were so impressed at Caesar's with the job that Vince
McMahon did in promoting. And you know, Vegas was looking

(05:56):
to change your image to become more family friendly. So
the WWF, well, now e was looking to change their
image from the Wrestlemingia eight because they no longer had Hogan.
Hogan was going to go off to Hollywood and become
an actor. He became the greatest what he hold on?

(06:17):
He the he failed at acting. Oh okay, So, but
they wanted to get more children. They wanted to keep
the kid audience and wanted to keep the family stuff.
So these two Las Vegas and Wrestling decided to come
together and give us WrestleMania nine.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Right, So what's new there for me? So we have JR.
Debuting on commentary just like he is about to enter
a Coliseum, which I thought was cool, and the commentary
talks and he talks about how he's been building up
to this, what is the seventeen or nineteen years of
his career.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
And then it was like, yeah, jam Ross, Yeah he
has been going for a.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Little like seventeen or nineteen years. He's like, I've been
working in my career and here I am in a
toga Las Vegas, thousands of WWE f now e fans
and he's going to do a presentation in a toga.
How nerve wracking is that? But the show must go on.

(07:22):
We also have Lex Luger there who looks amazing, and
Bruce Pritchard.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Yeah, Bruce Richard who's still with the company and known
he was known as Brother Love and he's still helping
out Vince at this point in time. Which to get
into it, they have their Bibles, which is like these
big journals. I didn't get a picture of it, but
it's good to see that whole breakdown and how they
have either the whole year already planned down in advance

(07:47):
or they write it down in the year. But we'll
get into this a little bit more so, do you
have anything else before I get into this other note
that I have of the build up before WrestleMania ninth.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Well, just how exciting is fired From all those big
names that we just talked about, we also have Brett
Hart can't get we can't wait to get into that
and the creatives were heard around the world.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Right, So they're booking WrestleMania nine. They're trying to get
everything going. They released the tickets for sale and these
were the prices for the tickets at WrestleMania nine. The
guy running WrestleMania nine at the show, Basil de Beatle,
I'll show a quick picture of him, mentions that he

(08:33):
and Vince were always on I guess in agreement that
they should have a cheap seat available, which you can
see that they have in this diagram. They had the
cheap seats at twenty five dollars and they're pretty much
stuck in the corner. But can you imagine being able
to go to Wrestlemingia nine for twenty five dollars if
you were able to get those tickets with two hundred

(08:54):
and fifty dollars for the ringside seats something. Yeah, but
unfortunately they're a little bit bigger and bettle. Yeah. But
as of when the tickets were released for sale. Come
around December of nineteen ninety two, Baso the Veatle tells Vince, Hey,

(09:15):
we've only sold two thousand tickets and they're normally sold
out by them. And at the same time that this
is happening. Unfortunately, Hulk Hogan's career in acting, according to him,
is not going the way he wanted. He missed, he
misses wrestling, he misses being with the boys, and he

(09:35):
misses the camaraderie that he had, which, whether you want
to believe him or not, I don't which be true,
but I'm sure that mister Nanny did not have any
good return and investment for him or maybe any other
movie he did with that. But so what do we do?
They open up the books and in February twenty February

(09:58):
twenty second of nineteen ninety three, Hulk Hogan returns to
the WWE on a Monday night, Raw, do you have
anything else?

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Well, like you said, the meat at this documentary, it
was all about the main events. So Hulk was very exciting,
like we were excited to see him return. But what
about bred Hart and Yokozuna.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Yeah, Brett Hart and Yokozuna. Yokozuna wins the Royal Rumble
after they finally agreed to have it at Caesar's Caesar's Casino,
they start building towards WrestleMania, and they get Caesar and
Cleopatra to come out at the Royal Rumbo, who gives

(10:47):
us a royal decree that we are all invited to
WrestleMania nine. And kudos to Caesars, because I think you
pointed it out right that they were very with it
as far as as I mean.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
During this time, I'm really surprised because with Cleopatra's we
don't know if they're going not to say that this
is fully historically accurate, but better than I anticipated for
this point in time. So what did you think about
Halcamania getting all wrapped up again?

Speaker 1 (11:23):
I was not here for it. I think I had
already when we did our WrestleMania seven The Stars and
Stripes one. I think at that point in time, I
was already turning on him. As far as me remembering
back to where I was in that versus ninety three,
so that would have been ninety one, So as far
as that would have been concerned, I think it was

(11:44):
already starting to turn on him, and I really did
enjoy that. WrestleMania eight was more about the macho man
versus Ric Flair as the main event because Rick Clair
had won the WWF title because it was vacated at
the time, and that's when we started the tradition afterwards,

(12:08):
which Yokozuna ends up winning to be the one that
challenges the champion, which is Brett Hart WrestleMania for the title.
So if Hogan had had his way, whether it's WrestleMania
seven or eight, we would not have the great match
that I believe was the Macho Flair affair in WrestleMania eight,

(12:32):
and we would not have the tradition that the champion
of the Excuse Me or the winner of the Royal
Rumbo challenges the champion at a WrestleMania event.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
Okay, good point. Well, okay, so we're talking about the
spread Hart versus Yoko's in a situation, solid match, smart psychology,
and then boom, falt in the eyes. There was a
surprise roll up and suddenly what.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Happens, dree Kozuna is the world champion. Yeah yeah, so
and then you know, we'll get a little bit more
into the booking here. So now that we've pretty much
given you you know how what the documentary exposed before,
as far as you know, the build up of how

(13:21):
WrestleMania nine started and how we got to the point,
and how it was built at a parking lot pretty
much how Vin spent around one hundred thousand dollars to
have WrestleMania nine looked the way it did, which I
figured the cost of getting the animals would have been
more than that.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
But I was impressed that they when they were talking
through the documentary, they wanted they wanted everything to be
the best. So they're building their brand, is what we
can see, and this is nineteen ninety three, and they're like,
we want WrestleMania, we want wwe we want this event
to be the best. So everything had to be amazing, awesome,

(14:05):
on point, and if it wasn't, they worked on making
sure that it was right.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
And from what we got with Bruce Pritchard, this was
one of the first WrestleManias where they started rehearsing everything before.
So they showed us Randy Machaman Savage being carried out
like he ends up being carried out later on in
the event. They showed Bobby the brain, heenan workshopping his
backwards camel walk out to the ring, and things like that.

(14:35):
So they wanted everything to be perfect. They even practiced
the pyro, which I actually remember talking like why would
you have pyrol in the mirrors so close to not
only legs but also to the ladies that are holding
up the mirror.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
And talk about that during the domar.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
But it worked. Bruce said that if it didn't work,
and if it wasn't perfect, then we're going to have it.
So obviously they had no issues with having the bi
wrote so close to everyone there in the ring, right.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
So do we need to talk about bread feeling like
that I'm dirty?

Speaker 1 (15:07):
Well yeah, well this is where we get to the matches. Now.
I believe that the only match that this documentary touched
on that you recommended and that I recommended was the
Lex Luger versus Mister Perfect. They talked about the Steiner

(15:29):
Brothers match versus the head Shrinkers. There wasn't really much
that was given to like, there wasn't much teas spilled
about that. It was just like I had brought up
in my version of it, that this was about the
head Shrinkers putting over the Steiner Brothers. Yeah, it was not.

(15:51):
It was not steaming. It was not. It was still
steeping when they were talking about this match. But but
I do recommend that man, but not because of the
Steiner Brothers, but no more because of the work that
the headshrinkers did at that job at that time of
put that tag team over. Rakishi and Samu Maria recommended

(16:12):
the Razor Ramon versus Bob Backland match.

Speaker 2 (16:15):
Which they do not really talk about.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
I think it's I'm not sure about Backland is still
with us, but I know unfortunately Razor is no longer
with us.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
They do not really talk about during this documentary.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
Right. So then the other match that we recommended, which
they did talk about a little bit about behind the scenes,
was Money Inc. Versus the Mega Maniacs. So which one
did you want to dive into first? You want to
dive into the tag team or Lex Luger versus Mister.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Purt Or do you want to talk about the Undertaker
versus Giant?

Speaker 1 (16:47):
We could talk about that either too. Let's try to
go in order. So let's see here. This match was okay,
So Money Inc. Money Inc. Was the first match, So
you want to go into it, or you want me
to start, you can start, okay. So we end up
finding out that Hulk Ogan for some reason, two or

(17:09):
three days before WrestleMania this I used to go jet
skiing out in Clearwater, Florida with Brutus Barber Beefcake and
he suffers an accident, which if you want to believe
him or not, I do not.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
When I heard him talking about it, I could not.
I was like, this sounds so unbelievable. But then when
he went through the motions of how his hands were here,
and then the jet ski went up like this, and
then I hit him in his eye and he had
a black eye. But at the moment when I was
hearing him talk about it, everything about him talking about

(17:46):
that made me say, that's all. So I don't know
whether I should go with like my instincts and just say, like,
you know, that's a lie, or I don't know if
it's everybody always saying that don't believe a thing an size,
because some of the stuff he says is just like
so out there in pectitious.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
But I'm going with I don't believe him. He claims
that he uh pushed with his thumb the throttle or something.
I'm not a sea doo writer. I've never been jet ski.
So if you're watching us, and if you have made
it this fard, please subscribe. If you haven't, give it

(18:27):
a thumbs up, share with a friend. But if you've
also ridden a sea doo and know what hull Ogan
is talking about, that if you push something with your
thumb and those dives a little bit more down and
that's what caused him to flip over because it accelerated
and he flipped over the seado, which he knew the
Seado was coming for him, so he decided to dug

(18:50):
But guess what, he was wearing a life jacket, so
that brought him back up to the surface and he
wasn't able to protect the space.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
Sounds more like I see don't instead of us you do.
But that's just me. I like to go with the
story that many of us probably believe, and that is
that Macho Man probably punched him.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Right, we'll go with that, right, And I believe this
was also around the time where Miss Elizabeth was trying
to separate him herself from the Macho Man, and I
believe this is covered in the Dark Side of the
Ring episode where Elizabeth was telling Randy that she was
staying with Hulk Hogan and Linda, but it turns out

(19:32):
that she was staying somewhere else and Randy didn't believe Hulk,
and that's when they got into an altercation because of that.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
Well, you know, it's one of the best sections. You
finally get context to the story because when you watch
WrestleMania and I and we saw his eye, We're like,
what's going on with that eye? Was it politics? Was
it panic? Was it just vintage Hogan show stealing the
doc lots the fans decide, yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
And we I mean, the only thing that we can
confirm is that hull Cogan does whatever it takes to
get on to the stage. Because Vince saw the black eye.
They had a discussion and Nevada is one of these
where they have to clear anyone for any type of
athletic competition. So Vince is like, if you get it
squared away with the doctors and the doctors clear you,

(20:24):
then you can wrestle. So what does hull Cogan do.
He goes into the dot and goes get checked out
and he tells the doctor, Hey, doc, this is all makeup.
We're running a new storyline. I'm going to get in
a feud with the Macho Man, which him bringing that
up randomly makes me believe that he did get punched

(20:44):
by Macho Man, because why would you blame Randy if
you're saying that that didn't happen to you. So that
was fun to get. It was also fun to get
information that, you know, even though they weren't getting like
top build, you know, or anything like that, right that
the Million Dollar Man and I R. S were there.

(21:06):
They look great, but they there. They were there to
do the job. And they told how and Brutus because
they both have facial issues that mask right, and that
they will protect them. They're like, we know where to punch,
we know how not to get into the face. And
I think they got rewarded because, you know, being able

(21:29):
to do that match and Maria recommended that match. Yeah
that you know, they retained their tag team titles. You know,
it was a weird booking, Like Jimmy Hart turns his
jacking inside out. He's wearing referees stripes and he gets
the he gets the counter three, but it's not legal,

(21:52):
so he's not the legal referee. So I enjoyed having
that a little bit more, and uh, maybe I'll have
to rewatch it because I haven't gotten a chance to
watch it, and knowing all that, maybe i'll update this
a little bit more with my recommendation that maybe I'll
change my mind on that tag match.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Meanwhile, Hogan's like, I just did what was best for
the fans, brother.

Speaker 1 (22:17):
And it's true because there's this guy from Caesar's that
was always like, well, Household going gonna get the belt
if he's in this tag match. So there's always this
little inkling of Hogan has to have the belt. So
moving on to the next match that we recommended that

(22:38):
we got a little bit more tea on is Alex
Luger and mister perfect match. I recommended this match, you
recommended this match. Let's get into some of the pictures
that we got. So we got more. We got Lex
Luger here talking about how he got his gimmick of
the narcissist Lex Luger, and we got a little bit

(23:00):
peak behind the curtain as we got pictures of not
only his name and how they were going to train
market and things like that, but also some of the
costumed ideas that we had. And I'm not gonna lie.
Some of these pret been in papers.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
Yeah, they're awesome. I love the artists rendition of the
costumes that they're proposing for this WrestleMania nine. Luke Slugger,
Like what Lukes.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
Sluger, Sluger my tongue, You're like, mister prefect. You want
to call him the lectursist, to call him the Lexorsist.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
One of these was this his favorite one because it
makes his shoulders pot.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
Yeah, he's like, my shoulders look more broader here than
they do in real life.

Speaker 2 (23:41):
But what you all know, you veterans, you see some
veterans of wrestling. They talk about it here is that
Lex Sluger is great to look at. The appeal is there,
but he's not that great of a wrestler.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
Yeah, and and he was looking for they're perfect. And
it was funny to hear that because I don't see
that like there's any issue on that. And when I
did my rewatch of this match, I recommended this match
without even knowing.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
When you watch it after, because they show you this
match parts of it during the documentary, then you kind
of see, oh okay, he was phoning it in.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
Yeah, Lex Luger goes up to, you know, and they
get in the tie up. If we discussed many times,
the tie up is usually if you're working with someone new,
you never rehearse anything. That's when you're going back and
forth to discuss the bumps, the setup, you know, the
sequences that you're going to go through. So Lex ties
up with mister Perfect and he asked Kurt, which is

(24:51):
mister perfect, shoot name his real name, what are we doing?
And he's like, what do you mean? What are we doing?
You know, I don't know what we're doing. He asked
him like two or three times. And you can believe Lex,
or you can believe me because mister Prefect's not here
to actually say. But I have reason to believe that
he may have been sandbagging him on purpose now, because

(25:15):
we unless Kurt was taking something that might have messed
with his mind or anything like that.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
He likes to say that he was maybe over caffeinated.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
Yeah, overcaffeinated over something, but I maybe there was like
a little bit of like I'm gonna not rivalry, but
he's like, I'm kinda I'm gonna see what this guy
can do. You know, Vince is putting all this money
behind him. I'm going to see if this guy can work, So.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
What a time to figure that out.

Speaker 1 (25:48):
At Asmania night, and he might have pissed him off,
like who knows, Like we don't know if Lex might
have missed some rehearsal, because if you're there rehearsal, we've
seen him. We've heard like when Macho Man went step
by step with Ricky the Dragon Steamboat at wrestling at three,
He's like, let's move one hundred, let's move this. So

(26:09):
they they worked these out, they plan them ahead. So
if Lex Luger is asking Kurt, what are we doing?
Who's not paying attention? Is it Kurt? Or is it
Lex Luger? And that to me, the fact that they
were still able to give us a match that not
only I recommend it, but also my wife recommended. It's

(26:32):
a testament not only to like something chaotic, making something beautiful,
but also to the talent that mister perfect or Hennick
had Rest in peace accurate.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
So this episode of Revisiting Lamania is brought to you
by us, but if you you want to sponsor, I'll
reach out. We are fans of coffee, beer, wings, not
necessarily in that order. And remember to hit like or

(27:09):
subscribe if you haven't already, we'd appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (27:13):
Yeah, and if you're listening to us on any of
the podcast platforms with your Apple, Spotify speaker, and any
otherwhere else that you digest audio podcasts, don't forget to
give us a review five stars if you like it
and share with a friend.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
That's right, And make sure that your podcast lineup is
tight and your entertainment hits harder than a Hulk Hogan promo.

Speaker 1 (27:38):
And getting back to a note that I said that
Bob back and is still alive.

Speaker 2 (27:43):
Oh thank you. So that was one of my favorite
matches the WRESTLINGIA nine.

Speaker 1 (27:47):
So all right, so getting back to it, because you
want to discuss it. I really didn't hear anymore else
about this match, but the Giant Gonzales versus the Undertaker,
that's right, all right, so let's get to it. So
the Giant Gonzales, I believe they views at Russell at
the Royal Rumble.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
I like how everyone talks about his outfit.

Speaker 1 (28:08):
Yeah. So it turns out what Bruce Petcher says is
that they had this concept kind of pictured here where
the Giant Gonzales is supposed to have fur hanging off
of his Torso the.

Speaker 2 (28:22):
Drawing looked better, the idea was better, the execution was
this we're not happy with. I too was questioning why
the outfit was happening during WrestleMania nine. But I believe
they were impressed with his heights.

Speaker 1 (28:43):
Yeah, and Vincent was always impressed with giants. But they
had this thing where they ended up giving him an airbrush.
I guess you'd call it a leotard, and with swatches
of her hot glued to his body or to that leotard.
So not a good look.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
And what we know is that Giant Gonzalez definitely has
the height. This gentleman has the build. Again, all the
respect to you, but he's not really that great of
a worker in the ring when it comes to wrestling.
So Undertaker versus Giant Gonzalez, this was not one of

(29:24):
our favorite matches.

Speaker 1 (29:26):
No, I could not recommend this match just because the
finish was just like terrible, Like you get you don't
get a finish, you just get the Giant Gonzales if
he's like this big intimidating character like he stands over
the Undertaker. The Undertaker here admitted that he had to
cock his head back to look and try to stare

(29:47):
down with the Giant Gonzales. You should not have to
use chloroform to have to use the quote unquote chloroform
for the Giant Zalas to get a win over the Undertaker.
And like the Undertaker mentions here, he had to try
his best to say that match because he knew that
the chloroform was on it. So he gets out from

(30:08):
the gurney and he takes it to the Giant Gonzales
and that pretty much saved and pretty much made that
match a little bit better than it was, But it's
definitely not worth a revisit for me.

Speaker 2 (30:16):
You're definitely correct. I agree with you one. And remember
remember wrestling fans, friends, togas our temporary, but legacy is forever.
This was not that rid of a match. We're still
talking about how terrible this match was today. I think
the idea was grand, but the execution was poor. This

(30:39):
was not really a wrestling match. I felt more like
a kaiju battle and slow motion, and the documentary treats
it like the mythic struggle that it was. We definitely
get that background from Undertaker who explains that he was
not satisfied with this match, so you know what can

(31:02):
we do WrestleMania nine. So at that we go into.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
Yeah, we can talk about the last match. So the
last match we have is Jokozuna, the winner of the
Royal Rumble versus the Champion of the time, Brett the
hit Man Heart, which I think he's aged pretty good here.
We got a nice picture of him. Yeah, and the
makeup was not good here, but we get the revelation

(31:31):
that hulk Ogan tells Jimmy Hart after his tag match
stays like, stay tuned because I still have more work
to do. I have more work to do. What do
you think that meant? Well, it turns out that a
few days before, two or three days before, hulk Ogan

(31:53):
and Miss McMahon had a conversation and this could be
one of the first instances where outside forces pretty much changed. No, No,
I think the people that Caesar's made Vince change the
ending to this match or to his pay per view.
Really yeah, because the guy, I believe his Bill the

(32:15):
Rose or Bill Rose from Caesars, who was the head
of the Caesars Sports Complex, kept asking when is Hogan
gonna win the belt? How is Hulkgan gonna win the belt?
So two or three days before Brett Hart gets calling
into Vince's office or his hotel room, and he tells
him that he's going to be dropping the belt to
Yokozuna and that Cogan is going to challenge Yokozuna. And

(32:40):
Brett's like, why, why is this happening? And we get
one of the quotes of the night from this documentary
that Brett Hart did not feel more screwed on that
day by He felt more screwed that day by Vince
McMahon than any other, which I'm like, what about the Yeah,

(33:02):
I guess you forgot what happened to you in November
of nineteen eighty six. But wait, that's three years later
all on bred Hart. They do a documentary on Survivor
series nineteen ninety six.

Speaker 2 (33:18):
You've been screwed majorly twice by this point.

Speaker 1 (33:22):
Man, So that's what ends up happening. I believe this
match was supposed to probably run around not funny, but
and you know, this match runs for eight minutes and
fifty five seconds. I believe it was probably supposed to
go maybe twelve or fifteen minutes. But as Brett Hart
points out, yoko Zuna does not have the stamina to

(33:43):
be able to go that far, and we had to
go and get to the finish a little bit earlier.
Mister Fuji does not have any idea. Brett Hart cannot
Oh Yoko Zuna in the Sharp Shooter move any longer,
and he eventually digs out the salt. He hits the
bread to him and heart, which we get he was assaulted. Yeah,

(34:05):
he was assaulted second time. I think you try to
get that joking to that one. So Natty's on here. Natty,
for some reason, they song about this match more than
Brett Hart is and buts gonna gets the roll up
pin in the win and he becomes championing.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
I noticed that were you questioning why, Natty?

Speaker 1 (34:26):
It was like I was wondering more white. Natty was
saying Brett instead of my uncle. But I guess they were.
I think they were just like worried that no one
would know that's her uncle.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
Yeah, we like you, but also it was weird.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
I'm like, So then comes Hoko again out of nowhere,
and we get to finish that the people as Caesars wanted.
That does not fall with anyone that is back in
the stage. Sean talks about it. Brett Hart talks about it.
An Undertaker talks about it that they were not happy

(35:01):
that hell Cogan had forced his way back into the
title scene, uh for the fifth time in his ww
F now E run, and they were, you know, Sean
was ready to make the jump, which I I'm a
big fan of Sean and I've always said that he's
pretty much even though this is called the new Generation,

(35:23):
I think that he's the one that brought the attitude
and he started the attitude. They're way before stone Cold.

Speaker 2 (35:28):
I'm the biggest Spanish on.

Speaker 1 (35:32):
Uh so uh, just to hear them talk about how
they felt that this might have set them back a
little bit more, and I kind of actually now hearing
them say, I think it did. Because Wrestlmingia ten, the matches,
we don't get a whole Cogan anymore. We you know,
we get the stand up being the ladder match between

(35:53):
Razor Ramone and Sean Michaels as part of it, and
so we hit the standout match between I believe Owen
and Brad Hart also in that match in that pay
per view too. So yeah, so what.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
Are we saying here is WrestleMania nine.

Speaker 1 (36:13):
Did this change any I think on how you view
this pay per view or any anything that goes around
on how WrestleManias are built. Because we got to see
a little bit on how the you know, how the
omelet is made, how the eggs are broken and everything
like that. So, knowing what you know, I loved it.

Speaker 2 (36:31):
Uh, you know, I really enjoy one in the background.
I like to hear interviews. I like to go back
and see details. So I definitely enjoyed WrestleMania and I
am becoming a spectacle as worth the watch. Yes, but also,
like Carlo said, doesn't change my view of anything that happened. No,

(36:51):
I mean the tea was good. You know, we get
some background as to how some of these things took place,
how Sean Michael was last minute was getting his outfit together,
and how much efforts There's definitely controversy around Vince, you know,
so there's that I'm not gonna sit here and say,

(37:13):
but you have to kind of look and see like
this is them building their brand. This is them wanting
the brand to be as best as it can possibly
be for the people that are coming to watch the show.
And I definitely enjoy how much effort was put into this.
It's a big deal. Like you said, they made a
parking lot into a full on stage. This is Las Vegas,

(37:39):
which is you know, like a big deal. And you
just also which is pretty cool. As they show who
in the audience.

Speaker 1 (37:50):
Who currently owns w OH they show Nick Nick khn
is the CEO. They show a little glimpse of him.
He was working as an usher at the w w
E WrestleMania nine events. They show them with the green
usher shirt and everyone's just all amazed and like, you know,
that just tells you at times, you know, if you're

(38:10):
playing to stay in an industry, in a particular industry,
don't burn your bridges. Don't don't burn your bridges. Also
your bridges, don't burn those either. But don't burn your
bridges because that person that you're probably talking shit about
or you know, trying to pick on and things like
that may end up being your boss later on down

(38:31):
the road.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
Just imagine from being an usher to actually being an owner.
And I don't agree with Hulk Hogan often on things,
but he said that, you know, this is definitely part
of the American dream, which in this year of twenty
twenty five, you know, rough times, guys, rough times but

(38:54):
it's just one of those things where you can start
from the bottom and work your way up if you
have you know that want and you have that dream
to keep on working towards it. So that was definitely
impressive to me. I was like, that's really awesome to
see him in the audience. Also, we get to see
an interview with their super.

Speaker 1 (39:15):
Fan of Vlad the super fan he was there, which
we'd have watched a documentary, but I don't believe we
made an episode about that as well. But if you'd
like for us to go ahead and review that episode,
please drop it in the comments. Well, I don't have
anything else to add in regards to this this documentary.

(39:37):
I enjoyed everything that got spilled on here, all the tea.
I was drinking it up and asked for seconds and thirds.
I thought it was British for a moment because of
all the tea. I was heavy, you know, I just
needed some some digestives to go along with the tea.
But yeah, but overall it didn't change anything as far

(40:00):
as my matches our recommendations are concerned, except I guess
if I needed to, it would probably be a recommendation
for the lex Luger and the Mister Perfect match, because
that match, even though it's like ten eleven minutes, you
can see that it's becomes so much more better because

(40:28):
was their personal tension? Was there something that got crossed?
Now you could probably examine it a little bit more
and see that they were able to make that rough
start into something that not only I recommend it as
a longtime fan, but also my.

Speaker 2 (40:44):
Wife as a market training. I also like in the
documentary that we have Mister Perfect going out and kind
of tussling with Shawn Michaels in the background, which is
pretty cool, and Sean Michaels is like, hey, that's very
common today where you get to see that kind of
back our own situation. We just covered that in the
last WrestleMania that we revisited where they took it all

(41:06):
the way to the factory in that COVID WrestleMania Wresmania
thirty six. Yes, so that was a pretty cool preview.
What do I think? What I recommend that you watched
this with us revisiting the media. Yes, it's smart, self aware,
and it's packed within sight. Like Carlos mentioned, it doesn't

(41:26):
bury the actual show, it doesn't protect it either it says, yeah,
this was you know, a big spectacle. You know, these
were the important things during this match. This is what
really mattered. And this is the kind of show that
we were trying to produce, and that, my friends, is

(41:46):
what makes wrestling so damn fun.

Speaker 1 (41:48):
So yeah, and not only does it make it so
much fun, but they only got one shot at everything, guys, right,
And the fact is, like Sean says, it is like
sometimes they're not always home runs, but we always strive
to hit home runs. And as much as people may
not like this WrestleMania and other WrestleMania's, especially the most

(42:10):
recent one forty one, these guys put a lot of
effort and time and sometimes, you know, their lives to
entertain us, not only with their characters, but with their
athletic prowess in the ring. And you know, just seeing

(42:31):
how everything is made and all the effort that goes
into it, it makes me appreciate it a little bit more.
Will I be still recommending every match from every perview card? No,
But those are different tastes for different people. You may
not agree with what I recommend, you may not agree
with Maria recommends, But the fact that we are here

(42:51):
and we're talking about wrestling and something that entertains us
and keeps us talking because it's in art form. Whether
you believe it or or not. Everyone everyone gets different
vibes from different people and it relates to different people.
But I think that in the end, we all agree

(43:11):
that professional wrestling is a pretty good escape and pretty
good form of entertainment.

Speaker 2 (43:16):
Right, So I fire it up on peacock, sit back,
let it wash over you like the biggest sun on
Bobby Heenan's shoulders while he was writing that camel backwards.
That's our show for today.

Speaker 1 (43:30):
Thank you for joining us. Like I said, don't forget

Speaker 2 (43:45):

Speaker 1 (43:51):
I guess yeah, I mean I would know if you're India,
I really wouldn't want to share that with you.

Speaker 2 (43:59):
Okay, Well, we'll catch you next time. On revisiting the media.
