Escaping their cruel stepmother, a brother and sister flee into the woods. The stepmother, a witch, curses the water, turning anyone who drinks into a wild animal. Despite warnings from his sister, the brother drinks from a spring and is transformed into a deer. They find a cottage to live in, but the brother's longing for the hunt leads to his discovery by the king. The king falls in love with the sister, and they live in the castle with the deer. The evil stepmother attempts to harm the sister, but is exposed and burned at the stake. With the witch's death, the brother returns to his human form, and they live happily ever after.
