“Quattro passi” verso la liberazione

In cerca di rivincita. Nel tardo autunno del 1944, il fronte italiano entrò in quello che i tedeschi definirono Winterruhe, letteralmente “letargo”. Gli Alleati dovettero rassegnarsi a vincere la guerra a primavera; i tedeschi consolidarono le proprie difese tra la Versilia e i laghi di Comacchio, preparandosi a una resistenza estrema. Il 26 dicembre lanciarono però un’offensiva limitata nella valle del Serchio, l’operazione Wintergewitter (tempesta d’inverno), che per tre giorni mise in grave difficoltà la 92a divisione statunitense – la Buffalo Division, formata da soldati di colore – e venne sfruttata a dovere dalla propaganda della Repubblica Sociale. Per questo, all’inizio del nuovo anno, il Generale Lucian Truscott, comandante della 5a Armata USA, decise che bisognava reagire, e lasciarsi rapidamente alle spalle il brutto ricordo dei reparti travolti dalla tempesta d’inverno.
