I see. Well. The detectivewe like in this office is Sam
Spade. See he pays the rent, he hires the secretary, he earns

Now, why do you want towork for me in San Francisco?
I lost my license in Chicago, got caught on the hot side of a
political battle, worked for the losers, and the winners framed me for my
license. I can't get a licensein any state until I clear that mess
up, and so I have towork under somebody else's Hey, but why

(06:45):

a mutinous crew off an English trampsteamer, and I burst through the door.

(07:51):
Get your bloomin bloody hands off thatman. That's when I can do
myself off on my tigger. Idon't know exactly why I sat there listening
to the guy, but I did. He was a sort of a one
man Fair to Gil. He ranthrough twenty eight dialects, played a scene
in which James Mason and Montgomery Cliffwere trapped by an Armenian rug merchant and

(08:13):
was saved by the voice of GabrielHater on the radio. Then he played
all four of the March brothers arguingwith the Andrews sisters. Man. After
the animation, he told me alittle bit about himself, regaling me with
spine tingling accounts of his Frank Merriwelltype achievements on the football field, in
professional boxing and hockey. It waspretty thrilling stuff. But nonetheless, I

(08:33):
was about to usher Raim out whenhe came up with a particularly good bit
of dialogue. I have a jobfor us. Yeah, Well, so
John, where yesterday Sam? Imet an old friend from Chicago. She

(10:20):
and around eight o'clock that night,I found myself still talking and walking
up the steps of your knob Hillmansion, missus Montague, cleverly disguised as
Flapsy the rabbit, paw in pawwith Mopsy Crockett. My head beast covered
everything with my eyes, nose, and mouth, and I was grateful for
that When I passed the doorman,I was tempted to say, ah,
what's up, doctor, but Fretzsaid it ahead of me. He walked

(10:41):
in as where his personal hutch, and you and Missus Montague cruised over to
us. Here are my little bunnytwins. Aren't you both? Just darling?
Which one of you is? Misterspeed Well, I'm mister Crockett.
Missus Montague, Mopsy you remember mefrom the nesbit Sware, Ronnie and Benita,

guard the crown? That's right, flopsy, I mean this spade. Oh
sorry, of course, I don'ttake any trouble, but it's so valuable.
I can't take any chance. Asmy husband picked it up in Iran.
He's in pickles. You know well, you know best. Where is

(12:11):
the crown now, Missus Montague.Oh, we're in the wall safe in
the master bedroom on the second floor. Here's the combination to the safe written
down. I'd rather not have thecombination if you don't mind, until it's
time to get the crown. Oh, now, don't too be silly,
mister Spade. Except for the crown, there's only fifty sixty thousand dollars in
the safe. Oh well, ifthat's all I'm The safe is behind the
dega original. Now until I needyou go and enjoy yourself. Well we'll

(12:35):
go. Maybe I'll even let youdance. But little me Frets and I
synchronize our watches and decide it untilwe were needed. We would lose ourselves
in the crowd and keep our bigrabbit ears open. Everybody was masked and
loaded. It was all very gay. I brushed our bows with pirates.
Northwest mounted police unmoned a gorilla,an Arabian princess for Pocahonta scene and a

(13:01):

carrot into the punch bowl. Agirl made her way over to mate.
I know it was a girl immediately. You can tell I tiger as a

My family? I sent me ona tour of America. I am
here as a guest. Now tellme you are a detective value. Not
as much as I regretted doing it, I hastily detached myself from Miss Polly's
Bajaire of nineteen forty nine? Howshe know I was a defective? Puzzled?

(14:07):
There, I saw Crockett talking witha paunchy red devil and a middle
edged crust of the Columbus, andstopped by. They were a big businessmen,
obviously, and so so it washe Well, now you take your
ordinary harsh tape of briefs. Hedoubled. It was impossible. They're interrupt
him, So I moved on.Finally I sat down to rest in a

(14:30):
dim corner of the library, andI know soon that did in a large
green pickle with two bandy legs stickingout of it, sat down beside me.
I want to buy the pickle. No, thanks, go ahead to
treat I only eat carrots. Thankyou, Just the same. Hey,
cold, you know who I am. As a matter of fact, I
don't know. I shouldn't care you, but I'm lonesome for somebody to talk
to. My wife dancing with anotherman. Sometimes I think she only likes

(14:52):
me for my money. I findthat hard to believe. Millions, you
know, just millions. I'm HoraceMonting you the pickle king. I told
more and any living man, congratulations. You like my costume? Never smelled
anything like it. I came thistime. It's just an ordinary new pickle.
Sometimes that comes to deal. Sometimesthat comes to ghirkin on jolly.
Once I came as a sweet sourmixture and it got very confused, and

(15:13):
we'll ax up to you. Iguess all I really here is my money.
Can't get tired of me? Andso rich it was from the early
days. It was a pioneer youknow who started. I suppose with just
a ward. Very it's very funny, very funny. Yes, well,
I keep laughing, Horace. Ihave to be running along. Thank you
for talking to me. I wasbeginning to fail like an extra in Alice

(15:39):
in Wonderland, and headed back forthe solace of the punch bowl. I
saw a Mopsie Crockett standing with apolice bizet dancer, and went over with
him, but he suddenly turned andhopped away faster than I could hop after
him. Why the coiners, Icouldn't understand. When I finally caught off
with him. Ten minutes later,he was waltzing with Anne of Austria,
who was hanging on his every word. And that was a lot of hanging

(16:00):
ning until you've tasted my lead, coop and you hands the spirit of girth
or Sheila Hina, all baked inone mind. If I cut in,
if you move, I mean withthe other rabbit. There come along Mopsy.
Well, hell, let's true.Excuse me, darling, I come
leader back. Tell us Sam,what do you hear from the mind?
The idea of avoiding me? Meavoid you? I don't know what you

(16:21):

it all over the floor? Sohelp me? I don't. Oh,

All right, you can give methe crown now. I've almost ready to
announce the winner of the costume comments. We haven't taken that out yet,
Missus Montague. You haven't where youjust said you were going to get it.
I didn't, did you, Fritznot I cropsy now running dot playing

(16:42):

said you lost the combinations of thesafe, so I gave it to you
again. You said you were goingto get the ground. Now where is
it? I don't know, butlet's find it. We arrived on the
master bed m. The worst thathappened the day guy original was down off

(17:03):
the wall. The safe had beenopened. Believe it or not, the
fifty or sixty thousand dollars perpetually keptand it wasn't even fetched. But you
and missus Montague weren't worried about thecash not there. But joels of being
crowned is gone. All the scriightful, what the horrorst thing? We're sorry,
missus Montaue. You were supposed toGod and it's your fault made you

(17:25):
stole it, your status as Montague. We did nothing of the kindest thing
to remember saying you we're gonna getit, and I didn't give you the
combination again. I know, horashorrorstmuch happened, Dear, I was walking
down the hall, and the bunnycame running out, dragged me into a
room, made me take off mypickle. Oh hit me on the head

(17:47):
with something, and he took offhis bunny suit, jump right into my
pickles and ran off. Oh cracking, and I dashed down the hall of
the room the pickle and abdicated onthe floor was the limp unfilled costume of
a rabbit. The Monogue's party notonly had a flopsy and a mopsy,

door. I was standing there wonderingwhere to pick up the tracks of a

(20:07):

a Montague mansion through a side entranceand under a taxi. I jumped into
another cabin followed it, divesting myselfof my flopsy costume our roots. She
went almost to the west end ofa Farrell straight and under the shabby gray
apartment host. I followed. Iknocked on every door until I found hers.

(20:27):
Yes, it's me, the heatbunny Flopsy. Remember why did you
follow me here right along? Becauseyou're so beautiful. I can no thanks,
I said, did you not hearme? Yes, but I have

I overheard somebody seat Now. Ifthat is all you wanted to know,
please go. Why did you leavethe party early because you drugged me?
America was not a police state. Why am I doing Christians? Because somebody
stall that Josephine crown that belonged toMiss Montague. You say prison and then
I am delighted, But I didnot steal it. What's your name,

(21:11):
Chamagne, Reggie? What is yoursam Spade? Why are you so happy
that the crown was stolen? Becauseit does not belong in the home of
a rich American party. Give aChidish woman who thinks only of her social
position and her money in France, where it was made and where it was
appreciated. I say, how muchis it worth? Money? Almost fifty
two millions sentiments more than one canstay now when you leave me a jome

(21:37):
that the crown mains model a Frenchmanthan money. How would you like it
if your Abraham Niggoln's desk was beingused by some fresh businessmen who self captain.
I get the point. I tellyou again, I do not know
what happened to do Joseph income tonight? Do you believe me? I did?
But only because when you left theparties you wore only her costume,

(22:00):
and that costume wouldn't have hidden thatwhile she couldn't have had it on it.
I want to block up the street, picked up a cabin, sat
at it until she came out.Five minutes later. She was now in
street clothes and carrying an over nightcase. She drove the Castle Street and
I followed. She went into arestaurant called La Parisian. I waited a
discreet moment, then went in.She was nowhere to be seen, but

(22:22):
a tall, lame, black hairedindividual approached me with a manu in his
hand. Good evening, Missieu.I regret to say that we are just
clue. I'm not interesting meeting it. Where's the girl who just came in?
Good? And he don't dummy onit? She walked right in here
thirty seconds ago, brown hair, red coach Sean Anne roget by name.
You have made some mistake. Youcan see there was no one here.
I am made no mistake. Nowcome plain r Como said, please let

(22:45):

no place too hide but to keetchyou all right, then showing me the
kitchen. No hear it? Ohmine bign I didn't say you long to

Sit down, pre Spade. Wellyou're here. I have a personal
matter to take up with you aboutthe Josephine Crown. Yeah. Well,
I'm signed a report that as yetI haven't found it. Good, I'd
be happy for you never found it. Does missus Montague know you fail this

(23:32):
wife? No? And I'd beequally happily if she didn't know. In
other words, you want me tostop looking for an ant the idea.
Oh you could make a pretense oftrying to find it, but no more.
That's interesting. I'll pay you agood fore you if you do this
for me. Why don't you wantit found, mister Manigue, Well,
I will talk to you man theman ways though, a French girl showed

(23:52):
up from town, Charmagne Roget Whatdo you see her? Quite a bit
of her at the party. She'syoung and beautiful and the point I was
indiscreet. She turned out to bemore designing than I realiate and black man
of a sort. You didn't wantjust money. She wanted to Joseph Crowne
and you let them steal it.And I told him get him into the
party, inform you from the car, and the rest is up to them.

(24:14):
Why didn't you just give them thecrown Well? I couldn't. My
wife values it too much into herprize position. She even wears it around
the house when just the two ofus are there. That's kid now?
Will you forget about this space?I am afraid not, mister Montague,
or I'm hired out to your wifewho asked me to guard it. I
did a bad job, so it'sup to me to get it back.
You say, no, Spade,I can't afford a scandal with that girl.
Well you'll have to work that outfor yourself. Very well. I'm

(24:37):
sorry, I must have met missusMontague. I underestimate of your husband for
at that point. But there's agun out of thin air, and very
professionally relieved me of mine. Hecalled the proprietor. But know who appeared
with Charmagne Roget They held on amedia tangaroo court. Sentence was about to
be pronounced when the front door, first of them and him swept the tall

(24:59):
charac and black beret and cape, and spotting a handlebar mustache prominently panned on
his cape, or a brazen Frenchwar medals, including the crowded gear and
so on. His entrance held everybodybug eyed, including me. What the
tire shouting gattling have we here?Oh? The glow of warm friendship fills

(25:22):
the room like a cottage fireplace andhas loved him. I know it cannot
be. Can I believe these wearyeyes of man? Is it not truly?
My auntie Manne Monsieur Montague like getsyou on both chicks in happiness.
Who I don't remember what you havenot so soon forgot me? We met

(25:44):
a delegation in thirty eight o years. Do you not recall the nineteen monmar
and the days in mo Oh mygoodness? Blow when he pen over to
cast money again as mustache fell asusual, Crockett had overplayed, and before
he got straightened up, Bunno hithim on the back of the heat and
he fell flat on his face.Out of course, that was my kill

(26:06):
to go into action. I turnedover the table wrestle with Harras and Bunno
while Charmagne was striking at me witha heel of a shoe. I got
to the gun first, and everythingcame to a sudden blow. At that
point Fret's Crockett came too. Oh, miss Amy, well did the sudden
darkness confront? Yeah, well youcan drop the dialect, Crockett. Oh,
I wish I had a picture everywhereon the floor for your scrap book.

(26:26):
Oh, it was in the act. Sam all in the act.
Yeah, well you think you're wellenough to hold this gun while I make
a search. I'll leave it toNis. Damn. Everything will be under
control. Now stand back, everybodyfind in charge here. The US government
is not entirely without influence in Washington. I'm a Joseph being frowned, hitting

(26:52):

a blow at Franco American relations untila search of Charmagne rouget and know,
but there's two tickets, not theParis who appoints French, but the rear
de general and you know, therestless Montgue guys, the one harm and
you forgive made a superb gesture andcontributed to international harmony by returning to Josephine

to being a position to recommend youFritz cracking. I hope he marries a
Sue Brett who stays over there periodand of report, isn't that fits?

The first person in his offers tomention his name again is a rotten egg.

(27:37):
I don't type that up. Don'tbuy a different brand of hair tonic

do you say? Hello, it'sme Sam Prince. Oh no, I'm
at the airport. I just wantedto tell you I'll be out of town
for a while for using the office, So just take the whole thing over.
Well, that's very generous of it, and you can use that if
you need her for anything. Well, I'll never be able to repay all.
That's all right. You did apretty good job on the caper today.
I was just talking with missus Bonninghueand I told her I don't know

(28:52):
I am for one day. Comehere so I should have to be satisfied
with my one arm. Good Night, good Night, Welcome Back. Well,

(29:18):
a really fun episode and probably oneof the more outlandish situations that Sam
was put into. I mean, the rabbit costume, that's just a classic.
And of course we have Fritz Crockett, who is just an amazing guest
character. Sam suggestion that Fritz getshis own show was intriguing and I wish

(29:41):
someone had taken them up on theidea. In many ways, Fritz reminds
me of what Jim Rockford of TheRockford Files would look like, dialed up
a bit when he gets into thatsort of smooth con man sort of detective.
And actually the plot of this episodereminded me of several episodes of The

(30:04):
Rockford Files. They did quite afew episodes on that series where another private
detective shows up an absolutely up endsRockford's world and draws him into whatever case
that he's involved in or hijacks Rockford'scase. So this episode was kind of

(30:27):
giving me an entire feeling of alate nineteen forties version of The Rockford Files.
I found myself wondering to what degreethe creative team on that series was
familiar with the radio program for SamSpade. The idea of Rockford as a

(30:48):
nineteen seventies Sam Spade is kind ofwritten about too many times for it to
be a coincidence. However, theidea of Sam Spade could come from the
film of the Multese Falcon or thebook without the influence of the radio program.
Though honestly, I think that theway that James Gardner plays him is

(31:14):
a lot closer to Howard Duff thanHumphrey Bogart. So I really do wonder
about this. I don't think there'sa definitive answer out there. For my
part, I like to think thatthis first aired, eight year old Stephen
Cannell was listening to the program withhis parents and enjoyed the story and the
plot idea just went into his mindand came out some twenty some years later

(31:41):
when he was writing some scripts forThe Rockford Files. But I have no
evidence that that's the case. Sadly, and I should go ahead and note
that, speaking of sadly, weonly have three more episodes left with Howard
Duff as Sam Spade. While therewere forty one broadcast in between today episode
and Duff's final appearances, Spade thirtyeight of those are missing, so we

(32:06):
only have three more episodes with HowardDuff after today. Now it's time to

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
