You too? Doctor Albert Kensington fromSamuel Space when he had a coach.
He was on Frillo and we licensenumber one three seven five nine six subject
and he was from Elkint, Indiana, and I used to live in Pleasant
Lake. Found it subject Helen Scullyare the prodigal daughter a coat Deah?
(05:24):
Doctor. Everyone in San Francisco knowsthe castle type hillhouse that Casper Scully lived
in, even if they didn't knowhim. When I got there, there
was an all black forty nine convertiblein the driveway and slightly smaller, same
color, a Russian wolf onund wearinga spike collar an expression of the match.
(05:44):
He broke his chain when he sawme and ran on the back of
the house. That should have toldme something, but I plunged the doorbell
and was admitted by a bubler namedStanley, who left me standing in a
draft from the library, looking ata cold television center. I pulled up
my coat tellets like a plant infront of the fireplaces the cigarette, but
he soon things started. A blindgirl and a yellow ship was having a
one sided argument with a gray headman and a gray suit. Nobody paid
(06:08):
any attention to man. Stuff abouthow you forbidden n cast go on.
Tell you it can go on justas long as I wanted to, and
there's nothing you can do about it. So don't, whatever you do,
try to interfere. Oh stop it. That hurt look again he did too
often, and I'm sick of it. You hear me, I'm sick.
(06:33):
He looked mad, but he didn'tsay anything. I saw him walk around
the garden once, shake fists ateach other, and finally parted. He
disappeared up a narrow stairway, andshe came storming back through the library.
Who are you? How do youdo? Who are you? Sam Space?
Are you doing here waiting to talkto mister Skellet. I just talked
to him, and he isn't verynice. Let me tell you that.
(06:55):
Yes, she's a nasty, stubborn, bullheaded old man and you won't like
it. Yes, they likes him. Back where you came from, whatever
your name is, I'm the nicestperson you'll meet around this place. Yes,
but don't wait around. Oh goodbye. But I did wait around,
doctor Kensington, and I did talkto mister Scully when you came in the
(07:16):
room with him. Only mister Scullydid not talk to me. He glad
at me through black smoldering eyes, sniffed the air, frowned at my cigarette.
I frowned back, mister Spade.I'm doctor Kensington, I wrote with
the letter, this is mister Scully. Oh please the cigarette. Mister Scully
suffered a severe accident many years agothat affected his throat and his respiratory tracket.
(07:36):
Small, of course, I understand, sorry, mister Scully, Yes,
thank you. This is not generallyknown, but the unfortunate accident in
the chemical plant also robbed mister Scullyof his vocal power. I say yes,
the modern doctor, the position oftoday is a far cry from the
general practitioner of yesteryear. Today wemust know the mind, the psychological quirk.
(08:00):
Well, he must follow through completelyon the case. Sometimes as I
am today a comfidom, an executiveofficer for his patience, he is a
well a friend to say the least. Eh oh, yes, eh oh,
of course, mister Scully. Tothe point of course, sit down,
Spade. Now there, mister Scully, as you well known, the
(08:22):
world knows, has made several fortunesin his lifetime, and he didn't accomplish
this by allowing people to run roughshadow. But mister Scully, I'm just
backgrounding, Spade. Please be patient. Mister Scully intends leaving his daughter Helen
his entire fortune, a great dealof money, to say the least,
say the least. But Alan doesn'tcare about the money. She's foolish,
(08:43):
young, headstrong and impetuous. Iheard her arguing, mister Scully a better
now. Now, now, misterScully, we'll straighten all this out.
Mister Spade will help us. Well, in Spade, you have half the
problem right there. She is aheadstrong, impetuous, girl, and lately
she's done several things to displease herfather, Right, mister Scully, you
(09:03):
see, mister Spith, I gatherthat that much. But what kind of
things? Helen's been singing in acheap nightclub called the Blue Goose. Why,
Oh, it's very embarrassing, lowclass. Yes, there's a man
named Torpie. He owns the club, a man named Chick Torpi. Ah,
you know of him, I've heardof. Contrary to all her father's
wishes, Helen insists on seeing thisman Torpie. How old is she?
(09:24):
Well, that's besides the point, misters Bay. But a sort of affair
now might rob her of a futureof wealth and security. Mister Scully is
at the point of exasperation. Hemight well change his will over this matter,
correct, mister Scully. At best, this is an embarrassing situation and
most indiscreet of Helen to have broughtit about. So I am supposed to
go talk to Chick Torpi is athim in a word, Yes, Well
(09:48):
you sound rather reluctant, mister spaycheck. Torpy is a little too old
with the boy scouts. Well,I we want you to see him.
Find out how much you'll take tostop seeing Helen Tom What happens if toffee
isn't the sale. Everyone has aprice stayed, matter of character. You
get paid for worked like this. That's your price. And it reminds me
fifty a day and expenses five daysguarantee to say the least. Of course,
(10:11):
say the least. And mister Scully, I happen to have a standard
client's contract with me here. Ifyou'll just sign on both pages, I'm
never mind, said not now, mister Scully will mail it to you later
on today. Dear mister Scully's fatigue. Well, you'll contact me as soon
as you have any information for us, I said I would. Mister Scully
(10:35):
sounded a final cough, and Ileft the two of you in the library.
It was interesting meeting this voiceless tycoonwho must have made and broken many
a man with a knot of hishead or a shrug of his shoulders.
The same black dog with the samespiked collar was still outside the house doing
the same things faith, but somethingnew had been added, a pair of
(10:58):
well tailored shoulders, diamond stickpin anda gray felt half of a snapping brim.
Hello, a spade. You don'tknow me? No, no,

(12:26):
Right? If you're talking about Helenand you, Yes, you're a
bad company. Yeah. What else? He wants you to stop singing?
Well, suppose I don't want tostop singer. Suppose I told you I
love it. Let's say she comesin a three million bikes when he kicks,
and you love her. I'd becrazy if I didn't. I wonder
what she'd say if she heard yousay that. Watch ask her Sae Hellen.
(12:52):
Hello, missus Spade told you toleave my house today, but you
didn't listen. Vince Spade, Well, I'm one ring anyway. Maybe this
will help When you get back tomy father, tell him I think she
could be a fool to brush meoff. Tell him that someday I expect
to inherit all of that wonderful moneyhe spent a lifetime making. Tell him
(13:13):
the chick's tide of working got allthat? Yep? How do you feel
spade. Why I'm earning my fee. You've already earned a spade. There's
no use trying. I've told himmyself. Now you can tell him she's
not for sale and I'm not forsale. Got it? You got it
all right? Hello? Oh youwell, I'm not sure I want to
(13:35):
talk to him. Give him apill. And it was on that happy
note, doctor, that I wentdownstairs, found a drug store and tried
to phone you and tell you whatTorpy had said. The line was busy,
and while I was waiting for itto get unbusy, I spotted Chick
Torfie out in front. He lookedmad at than when I had left him,
(13:56):
and I was a bulge in hiscoat and hadn't been there before.
He got into a black van ofthe curb, and I hailed a cab
and followed him across town up theknob hill, half a block from the
Scullier residence. I left my attackshe and put the rest on foot.
He was still a couple one hundredfeet ahead him. He is. He
disappeared in with a garden mentor.I heard a cry if I helped,
and then Chick was standing over somethingon the ground when he saw me,
(14:24):
he streaked for a break in thehedge. I stopped lying enough to have
a look at the body he'd leftmy client. He still had gray hair,
and he was still wearing the graysuit. Half a space and shot

surprised Chick Torpy saw him shooting amulti millionaire item. Ballistics matched up slugs
taken from body with weapon owned andlicense to one Chick Torpie and item.
Because of a city ordinance regarding disposition, the body of Casper Scully, found
off the immediate premises of his homehad been removed to the City Morgue and
(16:26):
would remain there until claimed by anearest of kin. Hi, Sammy,
Sammy, my boy, it's goodto look on you, Oh Maxie.
What brings you? Sam? Scullystick? Oh yeah yeah, checked him
back in autopsy. Were you inwith this? Sam? Do you know
(16:48):
Scully? I just met him yesterday. Like I say to you before you

me it has to be city ordinance, Sam. Nearest of kin, his
daughter Helen, she called or anyNo, not yet, but to get
back to him, a real queerone maybe the tops this season. So
(17:10):
barbarianism, Sam, that's what itis. The world is moving backwards.
You can get dead and dead. You think the slugs in his chest would
be enough, But no, whoare also on the head too? Kill
him twice? Say it again,Maxie, you mean the twice twice?
Sammy in the chest maybe twenty tothirty hours ago, and the head maybe
twelve hours later. You see whatI mean? I saw it a man.
(17:37):
I didn't like what I saw,but things did begin to make some
sense when the more I found thechronicle office confirmed that Scully did suffer from
the throat ail. It was publicityshy. I was never interviewed or photographed
for that reason. I asked himif they had a specimen of his handwriting
by any chance, and they did. I had it sent to anybody special
messenger on the signature compared to theone of my five day contract with mister
Scully made interesting reading. But whatwas even more? If this thing was
(18:00):
a da Maxley was ushering in asI was saying, Sam, it's awful
the way these homicides are turning upnowadays in gray suits. It's fashionable.
Now, Hey, what's the matterof Sam? You know? Yeah?
I know? On what's it say? Says? Unidentified accidental drowning found off
fear fourteen time eight fifteen s anaccidental drowning? You don't think so.
(18:25):
Why do you think he's dead?I think he's dead because he didn't cough
when the doctor asked him too.I left Maxley to his newest customer and
looked up the police officer and finallyunidentified man. All I had on him
was New York clothing labels and asilver identification bracelet with name Julio engraved on
it between two small indentations of thecomedy tries to be drama masks. There
(18:51):
wasn't much, but it took meto a theater on Post Straight featuring a
special company of Spanish actors on tour. I am the manager of the company.
What is it, plim, I'msorry to trouble. Yeah, I'm
trying to look at a certain man. I have got raising the belavies with
your company. We are a smallgroup. His name, Plip. One
name might be Julio. Julio theback grayhead million Bell. You are from
(19:18):
the police. If you are lookingfor Julio, say the back of why
are you not from the police? Two days ago Julio, who does not
speak any English, He's asked,of all things, to appear on the
television. It's a television program. Here reads his line. Now I'm proud,
(19:41):
But yes sterday morning, a manon the telephone. They speak,
and Julio goes out to with noword. I too, am looking for
him. He meets his performance theafternoon, I say, drinks too much
sometime. I know when he missedthe evening. Where he is this?
(20:03):
I do not move, but ifyou find him, I have found him.
Does he have a wife? Iam missing your the city? What
is it? What has happened tomy husband? You better get your coatless
to say the Baca. I wentback to the morgue with missus, say
(20:33):
the bacca doctor. And after thatI went over to the Blue Goose Club.
Oh it's been tired, Danny boytired. Well, come on in
and relax. Nice place you runit for. Check what he's away seen?
(20:56):
Check lately? Two said of cops. Three reporters have been here asking
the same question already this morning. What are you trying to prove? Checks
some trouble. You're his partner?Ah, he got himself into this one
speed. Look we make a nicedollar running this place. It's legitimate,
and no cops going to raid usor close us up. Chick started pooling
(21:19):
around with that Scully woman, andI told him just once, it's dynamite.
I said, you know how theold man is, let bygones be
bygones. But Chick didn't listen.Tell me about the bygones that should be
bygones, and why Check should knowhow the old man is? Well,
Scully send him up five years ago? Did you know? No, I
didn't. Check owned some properties outof Brasido, and Scully wanted it for
(21:41):
oil drilling or something. Chick askedtoo much, and Scully figured a way
to get it from him in court, had it condemned or something. Well,
Chick got kind of sorry, metthe old man on the street one
day, and well, they convictedCheck of attempted murder two and a half
years and Check looked up Scully's daughterwhen he got out of Presidents started making
love to it to get yes,Spade, that's just the way it started.
(22:03):
Only Chick was the sucker after all. He really went for the creature.
He married her three weeks ago inReno, the poor sample. Anybody
else know about that part of it? I was best man, Olloay Danny,
did you wrap Julio say tobacco overthe head last night? And taught
him on the bay. Julio whateveris an actor, happened to look something
(22:26):
like oh Man Scully, enough likehim to keep his mouth closed when I
was there, but who might wantto open it later. I don't know
what you're talking about. Spade,Thank you would, but I don't like
it. And what to me,Joe, Yeah, bum out. I'm
sick of looking at him, andthey did. It was two against one,
(22:52):
and I've been up late the nightbefore. I was doing very well
low until somebody stoked to a farmof subterfuge. I have long since grown
to hate. Oh I was bornon two swarthy shoulders. Out of the
club and into the open air.I was on a balcony and a good
stiff sea brains was blowing. Ididn't enjoy it long. On three the
(23:22):
water was cold but refreshing, andI'm asked to swim the five feet the
shore, and that was my limited. I hung onto a slippery piling which
supported the blue goose above me,and fincially hid the ante chamber in front
of me. It had been awine cellar once in a loading dock,
I suspected during proabsition. This timeit was a hideot. Give your hands
up. Spade, close the door. Keep out of this, Helen.
(23:45):
Yeah, you're crazy, Tobby. You got this all wrong. There's probably
a five grand reward out for meright now. They want me dead or
alive, and you're here to tellme how wrong I am. Oh,
it will be dead speed. They'llnever take me a new listen to reason.
I've listened to all the reason.I'm going to listen to no,
and I'm doing things my way.I got nothing to lose now getting out
(24:07):
of it. So long a baby. He leaned over to kiss a goodbye,
And that is when I rediscovered thatmy wet revolver. Even though it
wouldn't fire, I still had plentyof power left. Thanks for doing that,
(24:38):
As you know, doctor. Iturned chick Torpie over to the police
along with Danny Cavello, and tookHelen Scully home. She ran upstairs with
many tears, and I met youin the library. It seemed relieved when
you heard the Torpi had been apprehended. However, I have some other questions
to ask. You answered, allright, it's paid all right. I
suppose it'll all come out anyway. Two nights ago, chick torp He came
(25:00):
to the house to have it outwith mister Scully. He told him about
their marriage. There was an argument. I was the only one in the
house. I heard shots, ranin the room and found mister Scully dead.
Marriage certificate was in his hand.I knew this would involve Helen,
and so I did what I did. It was a nightmare. I hid
the body, hoping to find away, perhaps a death certificate on accidental
(25:22):
shooting or something. In other words, you were helping to get away with
murder. Yes, but I wasthinking only of Helen. Her father did
love her. But you'd already senta letter to me. You knew i'd
be here the next morning. You'veseen an actor on a television program.
He resembled Scully. I hired himfor a job. You told Helen that
chick had killed her father and toldher what kind of acting she had to
do. Oh, it was crude, perhaps, but I didn't want you
(25:45):
to become suspicious when a death reportdid show up. I intended to hire
you, and only it didn't workout. I followed to be here and
found a body. Oh, I'vebeen such a fool speed helping a man
get away with murder. I Iwant to confess it all suppose this will
make me an access rate with murder. Not exactly. You mean there's a
way out. There's a way out, and you were gonna take it.
(26:08):
I was already your apartment before Icame here. You're all moved out.
Door man tells me your luggage hasbeen at the station all morning. What
did you do? Okay? Herea rifle is safe? See his space?
Stop it. You're waiting around tosee if they took Talfy dead or
alive. Daddy couldn't talk and you'dbe okay alive. You're ready to blow
town. You bumped Scully get backthere, and you did your best to
(26:30):
hang it on a check Helen thoughthe really didn't played along with you.
You're not an access rate a murder. You're a murderer on a double comp
How the actor was knocked on thehead before he drowned. Oh tost a

(26:56):
I don't understand what angel I've beensaying. What will you say?
You turned Chip Toppie over to thepolice yet, Doctor Kensington was a layer

few notes about some errors involving beesa pit toxin. I hope I pronounced
that right. The venom of beastingscontains no appreciable formic acid, which is
primarily found in the venom of certainspecies of ants. Secondly, when the
beekeeper says the queen is always eventuallydeposed but the workers remain, that's not
(33:39):
entirely accurate. A queen will typicallylive for a couple of years, while
workers live only for about six weeksas adults. It would be more accurate
to say the queen is always replaced, but the quality remains anyway, love
the podcast, congratulation on leaving yourday daub to pursue what you love full
(34:00):
time. Thank you for the comment, Ellwood, and I think we could
summarize the feedback that the writers shouldhave made a decision to be more accurate.
Okay, that was a horrible punt. Seriously, thank you so much
for clarification. Old time radio canbe very educational, but it's good to
(34:22):
know when it might be pointing usin the wrong direction on something. And
of course, thank you so muchfor your kind congratulations. We then have
an email from Nancy, who, after commenting on the All Fawns and Gueston
issue with Yours truly Johnny Dowler andsaying she enjoyed the five parters, she
(34:45):
writes, here's hoping Sam Spade isback to complete episodes. If they were
going to cut something out, whycouldn't have been the obnoxious wild root jingle?
Oh well, best to you andyours well. Thanks so much for
the comment. Nancy, usually,if some random piece of an episode is
missing back that time, you know, a few months back, where there
(35:07):
was just four and a half minutesthat was missing out of the transcription,
I just write it off as coincidence, unless it's something like ads. You
know, some people would cut adsout of the transcription recordings when they were
transferring to tape or digital. Butthat situation with those two episodes of Sam's
(35:30):
Spade, which were essentially caught inthe same faction so that we missed the
closing with Sam and Affy, LikeNancy, I can't fathom why someone would
do that intentionally. On the otherhand, the odds of having two transcriptions
or two tapes that had the exactsame spot affected seems pretty far fetched.
(35:58):
I mean, I could imagine, and I guess if you had the two
recordings stored together somehow and there wasdamage that hit both disc in the same
place, you know, if theywere aligned exactly the same. I mean,
that just seems like such an weird, random thing to a car.
(36:19):
So I'm curious why that was done, if it was done intentionally, or
how it was done if it happenedunintentionally, And sadly, we'll probably never
know. Then we have a commentfrom Jacob, who writes, Howdy Adam,
again, many blessings on your newbaby and on your career transition.
I believe I can speak for allof your devoted lessons domestic and abroad that
(36:44):
we are also very proud and excitedfor you and the misses one. Thanks
so much. I also had asuggestion for the show to take a more
creative maybe, although my suggestion isnot in regards to old time radio detectives,
but instead a female active show fromtwenty twelve to twenty nineteen. Yet
(37:05):
this female detective I feel, incorporatesome of the qualities and perspectives, and
to say nothing of the tenacious devotionof some of the male old time radio
detectives, especially Richard Diamond, RoguesGallery, Bob's, Bailey's, Johnny Dollar,
just to name a few. Myidea was the creation of a separate
(37:25):
category of membership, etc. Thatuses the badge number of Victor eight two
five That is the badge number ofBoston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli. Super cool,
just a suggestion. Well, thanksso much for the suggestion, Jacob.
I have to admit I have nothad too much luck with new detective
(37:47):
dramas. The last series that Iwholeheartedly loved was Monk, which went off
the air in two thousand and eight. I did enjoy Sherlock despite its many,
many, many problems. It keptme coming back. But I do
appreciate the recommendation invalue it for noother reason than it is for a series
(38:09):
that went off the air six yearsago. Because most of the time,
when people urge me to check outa mystery program, it's usually one of
the latest and greatest. You know, it's, oh, you've got to
check out this new series. Thatyou enjoyed it so much that six years
(38:32):
after it's on the air, you'restill feel strongly about it. It makes
me feel like it may be worthchecking out, although I don't know if
I will name any tears after resultingawesome as she may be. Jacob continues
on I recently located on our heartsome of your earliest seasons. I discovered
(38:57):
your program very late, approximately seasontwenty. I came in on Richard Diamond
and Boston Blackie in addition to SaturdayDragnet days they were still playing in podcast
software such as Spotify did not haveand still did not have access to season
five, the earliest I've located atiHeartRadio. Do you have suggestions on how
(39:21):
or where I might be able tolocate your earliest programs so I might be
able to listen from the beginning.Again, many blastings upon you and your
family. Well, thank you somuch, Jacob. I don't know where
the season twenty came from because whatwe're playing right now, we're doing season
fourteen. But I suppose different podcastsoftwares have different measurements of seasons. But
(39:47):
in answer to your question, whatwe do have available is our Volume one
feed, where you can listen atVolume one dot Great Detectives dot net,
and we have the entirety of seasonone and season two posted for your listening
pleasure, as well as the firstweek of season three, and we'll be
(40:12):
posting season three over the next threeor four months, and then we'll be
starting our Volume two feed, whichwe'll contain seasons four through six. Thanks
so much for the question, Jacob. Now it's time to thank our Patreon
supporter of the day, and Iwant to thank Nancy, whose email we
read earlier. Gee has been oneof our Patreon supporters since March of twenty

start another Yours Truly, Johnny dollor Cereal with I went backstage to wait
(41:20):
for Amy. The stage door wasopen and I could see Porta Kane waiting
in the alley outside, so Iwent over to him. Well, mister
Dollar, good evening, Hello,Kane on duty again tonight. Perhaps that's
one way of putting it. Ithought I might have a little chat with
Amy after she's cheating. I'm asReadie has a date. Do you happen
to know with whom? Yeah?Me, mister Dollar. Are you suggesting
(41:44):
that I'm to regard you with somesort of rival? Not at all,
Kane. I'm just suggesting that I'ma friend of Amy's. I hope you'll
be with us then. In themeantime, do send your comments to Box
