Speaker 1 (00:06):
The Avenger.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
The road to crime ends in a trap that justice sets,
crime does not pay.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
The Avenger, sworn enemy of evil, is actually Jim Brandon,
a famous biochemist. Through his numerous scientific experiments, Brandon has
perfected two inventions to aid him and his crusade against
crime as the Avenger, the telepathic indicator by which he
is able to pick up thought flashes, and the secret
diffusion capsule, which quotes him in the black light of invisibility.
(01:59):
Brandon's assistant, the beautiful Fern Collier, is the only one
who shares his secrets and knows that he is the
man the underworld fears as the Avenger.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
And now.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
The Avenger and the Department of Death. The employees of
Conn's departments or are beginning to punch in for the day.
Among the early arrivals is Mabel Garning, who hurries forward
the employees.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Oh, good morning, mister Kilgore.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Good morning, Mabel. You're in early. This morning.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Must have been fast, my mister Kilgore. Your windows certainly
looks pretty this week.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Oh thank you, Mabel.
Speaker 5 (02:40):
I've had quite a few compliments on them.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Too bad, I can't hold them over for another week.
Save me a lot of work.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
I'll say, I wonder what's holding up this elevator.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
I don't think Joe's come in here.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
So where's the elevator? It's always part here on the
main floor overnight fall up through the grating.
Speaker 5 (02:57):
Someone else may have taken it up.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
It's not in the basement. I can see down here.
Come over here quick.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
What is it?
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Look down there at the bottom of the shaft. It's
Grady the watchman. He looks like he's dead.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
You're right, Inspector. Looks like Grady died from a fall.
What Gord did you say he fell from her?
Speaker 3 (03:25):
I must have been the fifth Jim.
Speaker 6 (03:26):
I checked the automatic meter on the main floor when
I came in and shows that Grady made his last
time check on the fifth floor at midnight.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
Well, let's go stairs and have a look.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Okay, all right, O'Brien, you take over here until my
men arrived.
Speaker 6 (03:38):
Come on, Jim, let's get out of the shaft and
take the elevator to the fifth.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
To the sixth. You mean, Inspector sixth.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
I said he fell in the fifth Jim, Yes.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
But the elevator in that shaft would have to be
parked above the floor from which he fell.
Speaker 6 (03:51):
We better check that first, get in the elevator, Jim,
sixth it is.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
You didn't permit any of the elevators to be moved,
did you? Inspect?
Speaker 6 (04:00):
Only this one? I took it down to the basement myself.
I ordered all the employees held on the main floor.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
Good. Now, what have you found out about Grady's so far?
Speaker 6 (04:08):
Well, he's been a watchman here at CON's store for
fifteen years.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Steady fellow, completely treasworthy.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
Who's this fellow, Brian? You're left on? God, in the basement,
he's a store detective.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Here we are.
Speaker 6 (04:24):
Ah, there's the elevator, just as you said, Jim, Uh huh,
very strange. Oh what's strange about it? You expected to
find it here.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Didn't he?
Speaker 5 (04:33):
Yes? But would you mind explaining why Grady rode this
elevator up to the sixth and then left it parked
here and used the stairway to the fifth floor.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Ah, Jim, don't start that the first thing.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
I'm on, inspector. Let's take a look at the fifth floor.
We'll take this elevator. Grady.
Speaker 6 (04:47):
You all right, there's no doubt in my mind this
was an accident.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Jim. Nothing valuable was stolen, or the alarm would have sounded.
So don't try to stir up anything.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
Oh a perfect landing, Inspector, Or, say, who's that coming
in from the stairway?
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Answer mister Kahan.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
The owner of the store must have something important on
his mind to climb all those stairs.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
Inspector, Inspector White, I want a few words, have you?
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Why is mister Kahan?
Speaker 5 (05:13):
Well?
Speaker 1 (05:13):
How much longer must I keep the store closed? I
had a sale advertised for today. Several hundred people waiting outside.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Here, Brandon and me ten minutes more then you can
open the.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
Door, mister Conan. We would also like to have your
permission to question some of your employees. Question my employees,
what poor If Gradie's death was accidental, it must be
proved so to the satisfaction of the police department. Oh well, naturally,
I want everything to be cleared up properly.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
But we'll look here, Inspector.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
There's no need to make a scandal out of a
perfectly natural accident.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
I have some influences. Yeah, you better take care of
your own business, mister Connan. I'll take care of mine.
I give us ten minutes.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
More here, all right, it's not that I don't want
to cooperate in every way possible, but as far as
I can see, there's no need for a prolonged investigator.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
In other words, Inspector, we mustn't let a little thing
like murder interfere with mister CONNX.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
Wait a minute, Jim, don't jumped any conclusion. Now, Why
couldn't Grady have fallen down the shaft here?
Speaker 5 (06:05):
Oh? Really, Inspector, that question isn't worthy you?
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Why not?
Speaker 5 (06:09):
Well, First of all, these grating gates may look old fashioned,
but they lock and unlock automatically from the inside. Graddy
would hardly have pried this door open in order to
fall down the shaft accidentally.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Oh no, I've mitch. You've got something there, Jim. But
what do you suppose did have?
Speaker 5 (06:26):
Grady was killed or stunned by a blow on some
other floor, brought here to the fifth floor, and this
elevator parked right here on the floor where we're standing,
while his murderer took the elevator to the sixth floor,
left it there, punched the time clock on the floor,
walk down the stairs, punched the clock here, and pried
open this gate and threw Grady down the shaft. Ah
(06:46):
that's all guess works, Jim, you have no way of
proving any of that. I can prove all of it, Inspector,
I am listening. Well, Grady had a bad gash in
his head, didn't he here? Look they're on the wall
of the elevator, about thirty inches from the floor.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Looks like a small blood stain.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
Now look at the floor right here where we're standing.
There's a larger and more distinct thing here.
Speaker 6 (07:07):
But why should the murderer overlook evidence like that?
Speaker 5 (07:11):
Only a few delights are left burning on these top
floors at night. The murderer didn't see it. Now, last,
but not least, look at the marks on this outside
elevate A door made by a sharp instrument recently. It's
a metalistill clinging to the marks. Eh all right, dear,
where we go from here? We start looking for the
answer to three very simple questions, Inspector, Where was Grady murdered?
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Why?
Speaker 5 (07:35):
And by whom?
Speaker 3 (07:36):
All very simple?
Speaker 5 (07:38):
Going down, Inspector, please face the front of the car.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
Well, Jims. This is the first time I ever spent
a whole day in at apartment Stow without buying anything.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
I've discovered the shopping for clues and a busy department
store is practically impossible for.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
Its closing time. Can we call it a day.
Speaker 5 (08:02):
No, let's finish our examination here on the.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Main floor, all right, Jim. Put in that little room
next to the book department.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Oh, that's where the bought has kept.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Oh. See this room on the right looks interesting, Jim,
it's not.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
Oh that's for us. The monk parn.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Seems to be some sort of storeroom.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Who's there? Customers aren't allowed in here?
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (08:25):
Oh it's you, mister Brandon.
Speaker 5 (08:26):
Yes, uh, you're Coolgar the window decorator, aren't you. That's right.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
I'm getting things ready to change the windows tonight.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
Heavens, are you going to use all these dummies in
the windows, mister Kilboard.
Speaker 7 (08:35):
Yes, miss I've planned a party motif to display these
various costumes.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
That should work out very well. Well.
Speaker 7 (08:43):
This first group of dummies is for the cocktail party window.
Those for the dinner party. That group over there for
the Tha party. These and afternoon clothes are for the
fridge party. These last five will attend the supper club party.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Oh the clothes are lovely.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
That didn't When do you begin dressing the windows? Mister
Kilgore right away.
Speaker 7 (09:03):
I was just about to strike the set of that
first window when you came in.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Oh well, let's keep you. I'm just doing a little
routine checking on the main ball layout.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
Do you mind if I watch you for a while,
mister kilgar No, not at all.
Speaker 5 (09:14):
I'll explain the procedure if you like.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Oh, thank you.
Speaker 7 (09:17):
Well, First I take off my shoes and put on
these woolen socks.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Man.
Speaker 7 (09:23):
That's so I won't leave any marks on the rug.
I see one of the side windows opens right off
this room, so I addressed that one first. See that
way I can get started before the store closes.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Seem strange looking at a store window from the inside,
I dare.
Speaker 7 (09:38):
Say, Uh, this little dummy I'm bringing out now, I've
did a very good job this week.
Speaker 5 (09:43):
The dress buyer told me she sold every dress she hadn't.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Stock with this model.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Where do you put the dummies you take out.
Speaker 7 (09:48):
Or in the rear of the storeroom. We have a
sufficient number to alternate. Pardon me, I'll be back.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
In just a morning.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
Surely, Oh, Jim, come here and have a look at
the world as a dummy sees it.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
Well, since I'm beginning to feel like a dummy on
this case, I might as well become acquainted with the outlook. Hmm,
very befitting. The view is extremely limited.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
Sound awfully low, Jim, Of course, I don't blame you much.
We haven't a comfort.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
Then look at that rug.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
What's the matter with it?
Speaker 5 (10:15):
There's a deep print of a man's shoe there near
that table.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
It's strange. Hugo couldn't have made it.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
No dummy is heavy enough to make a print as
deep as that.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
Anyway, the one dummy he took out of this window
was over on the other side. Jim, do you think
this means anything?
Speaker 5 (10:29):
It means that a woman's curiosity is a wonderful thing
for him. Thanks to you. At last, we're actually on
the inside of this case looking out. Mister Shelvin. You're
in charge of the jewelry department, aren't you. That's right,
(10:51):
mister Brandon. Until just a few weeks ago, the jewelry
was on the mezzanine. Why was it changed?
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Mister Cahn decided to annouge the department.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
There's more road.
Speaker 5 (10:59):
Display on the main floor. I see you're planning a
big diamond sale as soon as the new Shipman arrives,
aren't you.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Why?
Speaker 5 (11:06):
Yes, how did you know about that? Mister Kahn told
me I wasn't to mention that shipman to anyone. Well,
it seems to be a fairly well known secret, Sheldon,
mister Cohn, like that new vault for the diamonds is
over there in the room next to the book department,
isn't it. I'm sorry, but I'm not at liver Well,
I know it is. And also that you and mister
conn are the only ones who have the competition to
that vault.
Speaker 8 (11:25):
Mister Brandon, I hold a very responsible position here. I
don't want to jeopardize it in any way. You have
any further questions, I prefer that you direct them to
mister Kahann. There goes a closing signal. You'll have to
excuse me.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
We'll just finish up this report, brand and then we'll
go out for dinner.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
Oh, I thought you'd forgotten all about Immer Jim. It's
almost nine o'clock.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
Well, the inspector will want this tonight, but we'll hurry
it up.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
Oh where was I You just finished stating that you
had convinced it was an itsy job.
Speaker 5 (12:02):
Oh yes, take this down, Fern ready I intend to
check thoroughly and all the store employees who didn't check
out at the regular cuising time the night Grady was killed.
This will include all who checked out early, those who
were absent, and the few who may have had reasons
for remaining late. I am also working on the angle
(12:25):
that there may be a direct connection between the murder
of Grady and a plan to steal the diamonds when
they are up. But so far I've found nothing to
substantiate this theory. That's often Oh add this ps to
the inspector. Go ahead, meet me in front of the
department store tomorrow afternoon at four thirty. She will conduct
(12:47):
a very important experiments.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
And now back to the Avenger and the Department of Death.
Here I am it Becker, Jim, what are you up to?
Where did you want me to meet you in front of.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
The store, is Becter.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
We're going to pretend that we're two employees of CON's
department store. We either checked out early or we didn't
show up for work today. Anyway, we're outside the store
according to our time cards. Now, if we're outside and
camprove it according to our cards, we can't be suspected
of any crime that might be committed inside.
Speaker 6 (15:03):
Kenwell, I suppose ma'am has the carer evidence in Old Vancord.
Speaker 5 (15:07):
But what are you try to approved, Jim. The purpose
of this demonstration is to show that we can go
into the store and remain inside after the store closes
all night if we want to er. Now, here's a
complete list of the employees who are absent, who checked
out early the night Grady was killed. We can discount
a few who left late because they couldn't get back
in past the watchman at the employee's entrance. You'll notice
(15:27):
that this list includes a number of employees you've already
met and whom we now have reason to suspect.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
Now we're getting some plate, Jim, Who were they?
Speaker 5 (15:34):
There were fifteen or told, But the ones you know
were O'Brian, the store detective, maybe Donny who discovered the body,
kill Gore the window decorator, and Sheldon and the jury
to Prime.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
Don't forget mister Khan himself. He doesn't have to check
in and out of the store.
Speaker 5 (15:48):
I'm not forgetting an inspector. He's on my list. Well,
what are we doing now? First we walk inside the store,
just like two ordinary customers. Then we make a very
unusual experiment, Inspector. The door to one of the side
(16:14):
windows is right behind us. I'm going to open it
now and we're both going to step inside the window.
Of all the crazy idea you ever come up with, Gem,
thisis is the craziess I'm on, Inspector. We're invited to
a cocktail party with five dummies. Hurry ah, sit down
on that bench. You'll be parked concealed by those two dummies.
I'll stand over here behind this lovely lady in red.
(16:37):
You can talk, Inspector. No one can see your face,
but don't move. How long we have to stay here, germ,
until after the store closes. Maybe this experience will teach
you not to make me prove everything to you the
hard way.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Where's Fern? Why couldn't she have done? This?
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Is star to me.
Speaker 5 (16:50):
You're the one I have to convince. And besides, Fern
is up in the troid deveolpment questioning Mabel.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
Donny.
Speaker 5 (16:56):
Well, there goes the gong. It's closing time?
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Or how much longer we're going.
Speaker 5 (16:59):
To stay here like this until everyone has left?
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Far?
Speaker 5 (17:01):
It's just carrying things too far? He careful, Inspector, don't move.
One of those window shoppers is giving your suit the
once over.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
So after I'd finished questioning Mabel last night, it was
tired with his stor to clothes, so I went outside
and watched you in the inspector in the store window.
Why you look natural?
Speaker 5 (17:28):
We saw you, young lady, and I might add that
wasn't part of your assigned I.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
Know, Jim, but I wouldn't have visited for anything.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
What did you find out for Mabel fern.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
Well, Inspector. She knows all about the diamond shipments that's expected,
and you have a terrible crush on mister Kilgo the window.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
All that snow.
Speaker 6 (17:42):
Help Now look here, Jim, we're moved too slow on
this case. Inside job or outside job. I've got to
find a man of murder, Grady and find him quick.
Get that murderer right, Inspector, But it may take a
few a few days. Have you seen the morning papers?
Speaker 3 (17:54):
I wanted them went so far to print my picture
and capture it the police department. Dummy.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
I've got to make an arrest in this Jays within
the next twenty four hours, Jim, all right, I promise
you that by ten o'clock tomorrow morning, you can make
an arrest, Inspector, you know who the murderer is, then
I didn't say you could arrest the murderer.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Oh, stop talking in circles, Jim, what do you mean?
Speaker 5 (18:12):
Well, I know who the murderers accomplices, and since you're
so desperate to make an arrest, I'll deliver him. Then
it's up to you to make him talk. Here comes
mister con Now, Inspector.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
I hope you know what you're doing. Jim.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
Good morning, grandam spector heard mar Good morning, mister Kahn.
We're going to make an arrest here. I sent for
you because we want to handle things as quietly as possible.
An arrest. Who Roger Kilgore? Your window decorator?
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Well, you must be a mistake in Brandon Kilgore. Kilgore
was implicated in Grady's death.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
One of his windows was deliberately arranged so that someone
could hide in it without attracting attention on the outside.
And someone did hide there the night Grady was If
it wasn't kill Gore, then knows what it was.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
Bring kill Gore in here.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
Mister com Well, I'm afraid I can't kil Gore didn't
show up for work this morning.
Speaker 5 (19:06):
What was he called or anything? No, not yet. Come on, inspector,
we've got some work to do.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
Now that we're out of the store. Jim, would you
mind telling me where we're going.
Speaker 5 (19:25):
We're going to drive out to kill Gore's home. Inspector.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
I don't like the look of my cars are on
the side there.
Speaker 5 (19:31):
Wait a minute. Just look in that second window, Inspector.
Speaker 6 (19:36):
Why it's kill Gore. He's sitting on that bench where
I was yellow night. He has some nerves sitting there
in a daytime.
Speaker 5 (19:43):
Come back inside quick. That's the window, O'Brien.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
Open it up. Not so fast, Brandon. I have to
have a good reason to open these windows.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
And I'll give you one. Kill Gar's inside there, kill Goar.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Well, what's he doing in there?
Speaker 5 (20:09):
That's what we want to know. Open the window and
tell him to come out.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
Okay, come on out, mister Kilgar.
Speaker 5 (20:16):
There's something wrong here, Inspector. Come into the window with me.
You told Brian, right, Jim? Sure, Hey, Brandon, I don't
like the way he looks.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
No.
Speaker 5 (20:25):
Kill Gar has been popped up on this bench for hours.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
He's dead. How was kill God killed?
Speaker 5 (20:43):
Jim? He was given a hypogenic needle full of poison.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
For Jim, this case seems to be getting more hopeless
by the hour. Con Stow seems to have added a
new department, the department of death.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
Well, the whole thing has taken an unexpected turn, but
things are beginning to add up. For instance, kill Gore
was murdered by someone who no longer needed his services
and wanted to get him out of the way. That
time element ties up with a big event schedule to
take place at the store today.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
You mean the arrival of the diamonds.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yes, I think the.
Speaker 5 (21:09):
Plan to steal the diamonds furnish the motive for both murders.
Grady evidently discovered something in connection with it and was
killed before he had a chance to reveal what he knew.
Speaker 4 (21:17):
But Jim, why should the murderers stay in the store
at nights before the diamonds arrived.
Speaker 5 (21:21):
In order to make preparations for the theft? What those
preparations were I must discover today.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Well, I suppose we can eliminate Kahn and Shelby.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Why should we eliminate them?
Speaker 4 (21:31):
Well, you said they both knew the combination of the
vault they could steal the diamonds any time they wanted
to without any preparation.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
Yes, and be accused of the theft immediately. Also, in
that case, there's the burglar alarm to consider it. No,
our criminal is much too clever to employ such obvious tactics, Berne.
Speaker 4 (21:49):
But why should Kahn want to steal his own diamonds?
Speaker 5 (21:51):
They're heavily insured.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
Oh, Jim, Sheldon hasn't been absent or checked out early
since the day of Grady's chest, so how could he
be guilty of murdering? He'll go on the store last night.
Speaker 5 (22:02):
I'll admit that's got me stumped, but not enough to
eliminate him. Come on, friend, we're going back to the store,
and this time we're going to concentrate on the book department.
(22:25):
While we're here, Fern, I want to pick up a
copy of doctor Ledlow's book on crime Documents.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
Oh.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
I saw it here in this large bookcase the other day. Jim,
I can find it in a minute, all.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
Right, I'll browse around a little, Oh, Jim, come.
Speaker 4 (22:37):
Here a minute. It Look at these books. They're completely disarranged,
and some of them are upside down. This whole bookcase
is a mess.
Speaker 5 (22:46):
Yes, it certainly. Is that's it?
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Fair?
Speaker 5 (22:50):
And I've got it?
Speaker 4 (22:50):
What the book?
Speaker 5 (22:51):
No, the solution to this whole grim affair. At last,
fern CON's department store is going to have an extra
watchman tonight. This is a job for the Avenger. Yeah,
(23:14):
the bookcase is out of the way about half an
hour before the watchman and O'Brien come down here again.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
I had the jewels out in this case, moved back
by then.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
What's that?
Speaker 7 (23:26):
Boys?
Speaker 5 (23:28):
Who's there? It's the Avenger, Sheldon, the Avenger. I'm here
to close your department of death and bring you to
justice for the crimes you've committed.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
How did you get in here?
Speaker 5 (23:38):
Your crimes invited me?
Speaker 4 (23:40):
I can't say, you, Avenger, but my gun can find you.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
Kill Gore and Grady got in your way, and you'll
kill them. But you won't find it quite so easy
to rid yourself of the Avenger.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
You're there in the corner, Avenger, I'll get you, all right.
Speaker 5 (23:57):
An invisible target is no target at.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
All, Sheldon, huh, find you?
Speaker 5 (24:03):
You are missing badly. I shut you up now, you're harmless.
Your gun is empty, Sheldon.
Speaker 7 (24:11):
What's going on here?
Speaker 3 (24:13):
Sheldon?
Speaker 5 (24:13):
It's you O'Brien arrests Sheldon. I think you know the charges.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
Well, Jims. Now that Shelvin is in custody and the
newspapers have elevated the inspector to the status of crack
detective instead of dummy, would you mind bringing up to
date on a few of the facts.
Speaker 5 (26:01):
Not at all. We have to make out a full
report on this for the inspector.
Speaker 4 (26:05):
Anyway, tell me briefly first, what was the clue you
found in the book department.
Speaker 5 (26:09):
Well, as you know, the diamond vault was in that
small room that adjoined the book department. The back of
the vault was against that wall. Now, the other side
of the wall in the book department was completely hidden
by that large bookcase. On the nights that Shelvin managed
to stay in the store, he moved that bookcase and
went to work on the wall. He broke through a
section of it and succeeded in drilling through the fact
of the vault, leaving only the black velvet lining to
(26:30):
be broken through at the last minute, but the clue
that bookcase was too heavy to move with the books
in it, so Shelvin had to remove them. The night
before the Diamonds arrived, he was in a hurry and
left them upset. That was the clue I needed.
Speaker 4 (26:42):
But how did he expect to get the jewels out
of the store After.
Speaker 5 (26:45):
The death of Grady. Shelvin got himself an outside accomplice.
By that time, he was quarreling with Kilgore anyway, and
he knew he'd have to get rid of him. We
picked up this accomplice this morning and he explained the
whole set up. After Grady's death, it was too risky
for Shelvin to check out of the store early and
come back in to hide, so he hit upon another idea.
He hired a man who bore an amazing resemblance to
(27:06):
him to check in and out of the store for him.
Shelton's plan was to steal the jewels and stay in
the store all night. The next morning, just before time
for the store to open, his accompass would check in
for him, pick up the jewels in the washroom where
Chauvin had left them in a shopping bang, and then
exit from the store just as the early shoppers were
coming in the main entrance.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
And in the meantime, Sheldon goes to the state, gives
the alarm and is under no suspicion. Right well, Jim,
could we get the inspectors we pull out right away?
Eyes like to leave early today?
Speaker 5 (27:33):
Oh, I can tell by that glint in your eye
you're going shopping.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
I am well.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
Murder or no murder. I suppose no woman alive can
be expected to spend three days in a department store
without buying something.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
All characters, names, places, and plots used in the Avenger
program are fictitious. Any similarity to persons living or dead
is purely co wample.
Speaker 5 (28:01):
This is a thought, a thought, a thought. Remember listen
