Did she ever want something so badyou can taste it? That's how bad
I always wanted to be a privateinvestigator. I don't remember when the idea
first came. I only know thatit was something I hadn't for. I
worked as a cop, as aprivate guard. I took classes, I
spent time working for one of thoselarge outfits. I took tests, and
(07:21):
son of again, I passed,and I got a license. And here's
what really has me shaking my headin wondrous delight. My first case was
a murder. How's that for wishful? So she was young, early twenties,
studying, gorgeous, you know allthose adjectives. It means she was
(07:42):
a knockout, mister holody. Shewasn't dressed in black, she wasn't sobbing
or distraught, none of those things. The dark glasses were the only clue
she was a widow. My nameis Valerie Robeson. My husband was Matthew.
He was yeah about in the paper, killed with a rifle fired by
a person or person's unknown. I'msorry. The police said the shot probably
(08:05):
came from the top of the buildingthat adjoins the park. My husband was
in. It's there feeling some neighborhoodkid was fooling around taking potshots and accidentally
hit Matt. I came to youbecause their explanation is so improbable. Do
you live near the park? No? Does your husband work in that neighborhood?
(08:26):
No? I don't know why hewas there, he didn't. Will
you do it for me? Findout who killed Matt. I don't have
a great deal of money. Youpay me by the day plus my expenses.
If we get lucky, it shouldn'tcost you over a thousand. Oh.
(08:48):
She nodded her agreement and opened herpurse. She fumbled around in it
before she remembered she was wearing darkglasses. She slid them off. Her
eyes were red, red, expressionand lost. She was a young widow,
filled with anguish and despair over thedeath of her young husband. In
the building from which the shot hadbeen fired, a cold marble lobby separated
(09:11):
door in elevators. Midway was adesk where renters picked up phone messages and
mail, and where intruders such asme I had to stop and be identified
by an efficient looking lady. Itold her I was interested in writing an
apartment, and she directed me tothe rental agent apartment one on one.
First join in your right after youturned left of the elevators. I rang,
and the door was opened by ashort, fiercely mustached man with bright
(09:33):
blue eyes lyned from peering into thesun. So I'm interested in running an
apartment in this area. Oh,come in, come in. Major Emily
Griffiths retired from her Majesty's service chard. Missus Griffiths is the heart renting agent,
but she is not immediately at home. Now, how can I build
service? Un Is there an apartmentavailable on the top floor overlooking the park?
(09:54):
Oh? Jolly good time for thequestion. So Dolly are good and
the Wards are planning a year longcruise you see, out of the country,
twelve full months, and perhaps interestedin subletting to that period you know
with that interesting Why, yes itmight. My wife has to wish to
settle in for a while. Allthat moving about the last two years.
You know, he ate it upding crisply at the invented travels my medical
(10:18):
wife and I haven't say. Thelords were already told me and led me
to the elevator looking directly across thelobby from the eagle eyed woman at the
front desk, who would have seenanyone coming along. Is there a freight
elevator for appronichip? Oh? Yes, yes, it runs from the basement
to the top floor now at theopposite end of the building. Of course,
A yeah, we are. Nowif you're following me, you are
(10:41):
very fortunate. The wars only madetheir decision a day or two ago.
Now, now we'll see if Ibrought the proper key, what ap to
use? Huh? You'll see. It's two bedrooms to the left and right
before you reach the living room, which is direct your head, and the
kitchen to your right, and thereare two full baths. Lovely places you
(11:03):
can see, lovely lovely tenants oftentake the sun down there in the park.
You know whether those governesses are sittingall. We allow them to use
a roof just above you, sir, which can be reached by stairs at
either end of the building. Yeavery nice, very very very nice.
I'd like to bring my wife,if you don't mind, I'd I'd need
her opinion. You understand that,of course, of course, guy.
(11:26):
I went to school with Ben Wheelerwho works in the morgue in the morning
newspaper, and he let me finda corner where I could go through the
newspaper's file stories of Matt Robeson's murders, suggesting Ropes's death wasn't an accident.
Yeah, that's right, and behindher her parents beside her a family friend,
(11:50):
Zachary West. How about that Mustang'sa hairy one, isn't he?
Hey? Hey, look here?Tragic family says her brother was killed and
a boating accident two years ago, outsailing storm came up, boats sank,
found a cushion. The next dayboat and brother gone, here's the picture
you ran on and it looks likeyour sister. Can I get copies of
(12:13):
these? A lous equality, butsurely sure? I found family friend Zachary
West's address and the phone book anddrove out there. A big sign out
front read Century one apartments, firstin a series of posh pads for swinging
sings. I parked across the streetjust as a dashing red sports car shifted
down muffless, burping, and duckedinto the underground garage. The driver was
(12:39):
the man in the newspaper picture,Zachary West. Of all the hair.
I got out and managed to bumpinto him and one of the paths.
Instead of being straightforward, I puton my puzzled, ingenuous face. You
find out more things that way.You look lost? Help you? Yes,
I thought maybe i'd I'd like torent an apartment. You picked the
best spot. I'll steer you tothe manager's office. Well, that's very
(13:01):
very nice of you, appreciate it. That's what what happens if you move
in and then decide to get married. Why get married when it's all lying
around waiting for you. Here weare, Lorenzo. I bring you a
customer. Welcome. Welcome. Lorenzois manager, master of ceremonies, and
(13:22):
what one might call confessor, aranger for our community class See Zack Tonight's
fifteen bees birthday party. Cout onme. I'm an eighty six, A
drop in for a drink anytime, and don't hesitate to bring one or two
guests, even three. I'll showyou some of the apartments you prefer,
blonde neighbors, prunettes speckled if theycome that way. He showed me a
(13:48):
series of flashy apartments, all furnishedfor a race of people who only got
out of bed to have a drinkand smoke a joint. I told him
i'd let him go and left inthe garage, which gave me the chance
to write on the license number onZachary West's where the supports car. I'd
only driven a couple of blocks whenI saw that someone was following me,
(14:09):
a young woman, long black hairblowing, driving a beat up station wag.
When I got to the shopping center, I drove around to the back
where my office is and parked atthe h holiday Stunce. She circled,
pulled it into an empty space, and slid out, tearing around like a
baby bird looking for his mother. She tried to see where I had gone.
She spotted my car and came towardme. As she arrived, I
stepped up, Oh looking for something? What I know? Why because you
(14:35):
were following me? Why? Whythat's a laugh? Why because I saw
you before riding down Zachary's license number? What sort of behavior is that I
didn't take down his license plate?Silly? I took the number of the
car next to him. I'm aninsurance adjuster, not to toendy of your
business. Any further questions. Oh, oh, well, why do you
(14:58):
see, I got this impression youwere a cop, and I couldn't understand
Zachary what he could have done tobring out the fuzz. So that's why
I excuse me, quite all right, perfectly logical era. She seemed to
be just a nice young lady lookingout for a friend, or so I
believe that. At all events, she left me with an enormous curiosity about
(15:24):
Zachary West. So next morning Iwaited outside his apartment, followed him into
the city, parked where he parked, and sat beside him at the corner
of the coffee shop where he ain'tbreakfass. I recommend the waffles, waffles,
miss, and a coffee now, please. If you had questions,
why didn't you ask me? Valerie? How are you? Yeah? What
(15:48):
do you want to know? I'mtrying to find out if anyone wanted to
kill Matt. I saw the newspaperpicture of you at the funeral. Were
you Matt's friend or Valerie's both?I introduced him as a matter of fact,
and Valerie works for me. I'ma clothes designer, men's and women's.
Where any idea why Matt was killed? No? Police called it an
accident. According to the newspapers,Valerie doesn't think so. Valerie's a new
(16:11):
widow. It's very difficult for herto accept what's happened. Do you know
her brother, the one who diedin the boating accident? Varie, Yes,
he's how I'm at Valerie. What'sthat got to do with? Oh,
don't let your waffle get cold. Here's my business, kite call anytime
I could be a velp. Yeah, yeah, right. Valerie robson over
(16:37):
in the middle of an old housingcrack, lost badly and need she produced
me to her mother, Dora philbritwho was enshrouded doing my grandma to call.
I don't know what Matt was doingin the park. He left here
about seven point thirty. He hada nine o'clock class at the university.
Did you ever get there? No? Oh, I was reading the background
(16:57):
in this manner. I ran intothe infoma about your brother. I'm very
sorry. It was a terrible loss. Were you close to your brother?
No one was close to Larry. He was a bachelor, what you'd call
a swinger girl in every port, sort of man. He didn't even have
a job. His father kept afterhim, but Larry always had an excuse
(17:18):
for not working. Ah, I'msorry, I'm late. Uh will you
excuse me? Well? Sure,if it's all right, I'd like to
talk to your mother for a minuteor two. Of course i'll be late.
Mother. Zachary has a show tonightand I said i'd work it.
Oh r one of the girls issick. Oh bye, bye bye.
I'd uh. I'd like to knowa little bit more about your son,
Larry, would you mind? No? But what does that have to do
(17:45):
with Matt's death? I don't know, probably nothing. Do you agree that
Larry's dad was an action? I'msure that in your profession you hear all
sorts of things about people. Idon't surprise easily if that's what you mean.
What I'm going to say is inconfidence. Of course. I think
(18:07):
Larry took his own life. Larryand another young man, Zachary and West,
they were very close, too close, if you understand my meaning,
I think I do. His fatherspoke to him about it. His father
told Larry he was less than aman and he didn't want to have anything
to do with him. Larry wentup to the lake the very next morning,
(18:30):
and that's why I think he tookhis own life, and certainly he's
better off in my opinion, isyour son in law Matthew know Larry?
Oh no, Valry got to knowMatt after Larry was gone. Oh I
see, well, thank you.Oh one other thing, Valerie said,
(18:52):
Matt was taking some classes at theuniversity in what you know, oh,
photography, of course, he waslearning to be a fit. Matt's photography
instructor had been Norman Fields, afull beard, had shaved headed man.
I made him at all outside theFine Arts building. I sat in the
(19:14):
sun when he hookeered beneath the tree, rubbing his head. Yeah. What
did you want to know about MatthewRobson? And why would anyone want to
kill the dreadful little twip? He'sgoing to ask me the same question,
tell me about it. Well, now, let's see. I suppose you
want to know if he was agood student, Uh, innovative, quite
getting and so forth here, thingslike that. No, although he spent
(19:37):
an the norton amount of time here, Matthew Robson was a man who didn't
even own a decent camera, andyet he was in my class. Now
one must ask oneself why why?Because Matt's own personal interest for what motivated
and guided him. His time herewas spend in the dark whom he cleaned
it up, set out the chemicalstack, sorted the photographic papers, cleaned
(20:00):
the enlargers, and he knows youwhy? Oh sure, he needed a
place to develop his own work things. He didn't want anyone else to see
pictures? Of course? Did hekeep the negatives in prints here? Oh?
You mean no one has mentioned MatthewRobeson's out of sharecase. Why that
was the most obvious and apparent thingabout him. He was a cruppy little
man, late twenties, skinny wildclothes, who always walked in a slouch,
(20:25):
hurriedly. He was never without thisADDI sharecase like a small suit,
gits very expensive, never out ofhis grasp. Well, I would assume
that that's where he kept his goodies. Why goodies? Well, Matt Robeson
was a man to do anything fora buck, and I mean that literally.
Whatever he was peddling within that addershare case. Now, it's just
(20:47):
a shame you didn't know him.You missed out on a real odd ball.
Oh. I drove from there ata Zachary West showroom to a cavalry.
I entered a sale where I'm showinga Zachary West's full selection of clothes
for the career woman's progress. Amongthe natty outfits on display where wardrobes for
(21:10):
lady mail carriers, surgeons, busdrivers, and wiars. As I entered
the room, the young woman withthe station wayon was walking on stage to
join the o's and which you willleave it? She was pressed as a
governess. Sears Where America's shops inviteyou to apply for the Seers Credit Card.

enters. Nearly everyone at our partymentioned our new series Dream Supreme carpeting.
Did anyone say anything about my rudabaka? Dipp Marvin said, Dream Supreme looks
so thick and luxurious. He lovedit's velvety soft plush pile. What about
my rudabaka? Dipp Elouise adored thecolor of my rudabaka dip I told her
(22:48):
that avocado lime is just one ofDream Supreme's twenty lustrous colors. And when
Doras heard the Dream Supreme is soreasonably priced and treated with Scotch Guard brand
fabric protector. Okay, what aboutmy Tula Fish upside Downcate Dream Supreme carpeting
in most larger series retail stores. Are we finally set for Grandma? I
think so. We've got the newSeers travel Guard baby seat in the car
right, and the extra sleep andplay babysits. Oh, Grandma will love
(23:11):
those. They're so cute and yetpractical. The extra baby blankets and bottles
are in the vinyl diaper bag.Oh. Seers certainly did make shopping for
the baby easy. Sure did well. I think we've got everything, honey,
I think you've forgotten something. Ma baby. Harry Holiday wasn't comfortable
(23:42):
sitting on a folding wooden chair watchinga fashion show, but being the gung
hold type fellow he was, hesat there like a little gentleman and took
it all in. When the showwas over, he bought his clad to
drink in one of those dark Englishcavern red because where patrons hid in shadowy
(24:03):
booth tucked into dark corners is ata shake case. He wasn't carrying it
while he was shot. Any ideawhere it might be. No, he
never put it down. He luggedit around all the time. I can't
imagine where it is well, heasked me to help you. Did you
suspect something? Suspect Oh, thathe might have been seeing someone else.
And that's what he was doing inthe park that morning, meeting somebody.
(24:26):
Oh No, I never thought Mattwould cheat. He wasn't that sort of
man. Matt's only weakness was hisgreed. Oh, he was a sweet,
dear man when we got married. Then somehow I must have given him
the impression led him to believe thatwell, that I was dissatisfied with our
life, that I expected more fromhim, And I didn't. Really,
(24:48):
It's just that I kept hoping he'dfind himself stop drifting, that terrible,
restless drifting. I don't know whyhe say, don't find any connection,
but I can't help remembering that inthe pictures I saw your brother's funeral,
there was no casket. Was hecreaming? No, because there wasn't a
(25:10):
body. They never recovered it.They told us that often happens in deep
lakes, the body is trapped inthe boat. We held the services anyway,
of course, Oh, yes,of course. The next morning I
called an old army buddy who workedfor the Department of Motor Vehicles and gave
him the license plate number of thebattered station wagon and asked for the owner's
name and address. And then Igot a phone call from the answering service
(25:33):
of Major Griffey's wanted to speak tome. Oh, is that apartment you
liked is available? The Major toldme the Wards had found the freighter leaving
with the tide tomorrow night. Yeah, the pace needs a bit of cleaning.
You know, there's some soap andwater and Joe Parson's picture. I'll
head on to it and jud yourwife comes by what. I thanked him,
had some breakfast and went over there. Major and his wife were out.
(25:53):
The lady sitting guard on the frontdesk told me, but missus Warwick
was expecting me, just go righton up. I did. Oh,
you must be mister Holliday about theapartment. That's right, it isn't your
wife. She'll be a long later. I left word of the desk to
center up. Oh please come in. Thanks, you'll forgive the mess.
(26:15):
But suddenly we're on our way,and it's really so exciting all the way
around the world, can you imagine? And on a freighter, she babbled
on, absolutely delighted with a newadventure. She was about to have.
She was a pretty bright eyed oldwoman in her mid thirties, and her
face was flushed from her exertions. She's putting things into several large packing cases
in the center of the room, which should be stored until their return,
(26:37):
and she'd unclosed it worth to betaken in a large wardrobe. Half hidden
behind a few dresses was a governess'swhite outfit. She saw me staring at
her. I won't be needing thatanymore, thank goodness. She continued her
work, chattering on about their suddendeparture. Unlucky, they'd then to find
a freighter with space for them. And my poor husband out gathering passports and
(26:57):
letters of credit, all the thingsone needs, and speaking of good fortune,
Tomorrow is our first wedding anniversary. Will be silly, the high seas
and celebration. What's that? Ohwell, i'd have told you about that
anyway. Some of the tenants sunthemselves on the roof, and when they
step out of the stairwell it makesthat sound. It happens very infrequently.
(27:18):
Oh look, there's Teddy, hesees me. It all happened very quickly.
Her husband, Teddy, was walkingacross the park to us. He
looked up and started to wave, and then he must have seen something,
because he opened his mouth to shout, and then the bullet hit him,
and he slumped under the pavement,The governesses in the park scattering like dry
leaves in the wind. I wasout of the apartment almost as soon as
(27:42):
I heard the sharp snap of therifle fire from the roof above me.
I heard the freight elevator groaning downto the basement and raced after The boe
was there and the alley was empty. By the time I got around to
the park. Missus Warren was kneelingon the path beside her husband. Did
you She didn't cry, She almostlooked as though she had expect it had
to happen. Well, why doyou say that you can't live as he
(28:04):
did without something in consequences? HadI kept make him believe that everything was
all right, that the money hebrought home was legitimately earned, that silly
governess costumes, the exchange of envelopesand a baby carry from all of us
was a shine. It's not somethingreal, something that would end in this.
(28:30):
She didn't say anything more. Sheanswered questions, but to her by
the first policeman and then spoke tothe homicide man. They questioned me,
I told him what I had observed, and nothing more than ducked out of
there. Soon after I got backin the office, the call I had
been afraid i'd get came in.The police just left. We can't believe
it. It's been two years.Have him help. I'd like to come
(28:53):
by it later the day. Oh, my father's coming down to be with
us. Who did it? Whochat Larry or what was he? Calling
himself a teddy ward? I don'tthink they know who shot him? Had
something to do with matstep and thesame the same way, in the same
place. That's what I am tryingto find out. The minute I hung
(29:17):
up, I got a call formy buddy at the apartment of Motor Vehicles.
The owner of the station wagon wasRock Sane Lucetti, and he gave
me your address, a place calledme Aloha Arms. Her apartment faced the
court, which featured a postage stayof sized swimming pool being cleaned by a
tan young man with long blonde hairand an earring. Yeah, what well,
(29:42):
luk, who's here? What doyou want? Well? I did
like to ask you A couple ofquestions come in although I don't recall we
have any unfinished business to discuss.Hey, nice little apartments your mother decorated.
What's that supposed to mean? Well? Nothing really, but everything sort
(30:03):
of square in here? And youseem to me to be more of an
individualist. What's the matter with you? You come in here without a how
do you do? Or how areyou feeling today? Then you start to
make critical statements about me and myfamily. Not critical at all, no
criticism implied or intended. What sortof a person are you making fun of
me? He? Come on?Come on? Can I take it easy
(30:23):
with that bag? No? Whatdo you got in here? Concrete?
Come on now, fund's fun?Give me that? That's pain? Don't
open it? What have we gothere? Well, bless my heart?
Just but every lady must carry inher bag a rifle scope? Give me
that? Is it yours? Isthat's your scope? I didn't realize you
(30:45):
were a marksman. Pardon a marxwoman. It's not mine? Why is it
in your bag? This friend askedme to sell it for him. What
friend? I don't remember his name? Now go away. You know you're
really a terrible. Your whole characterchanges. I like you better when you're
yelling and screaming, you just listen. I was nice enough to allow you
(31:07):
to come into my apartment and thenall you do is cast aspersion after aspersions
at me and my friends. Andit's none of your bleep business. So
why don't you just go away andleave me alone? What kind of a
jerk are you? Okay? Okay, gotcha? I stopped for a minute
outside the door, and sure,I thought, crying, crying her heart

Yeah. I never lost that weighteither with me different. I was
climbing the walls, yelling at thekids. I just couldn't live with myself.
(33:05):
Neither could Dan could he? No, not really, he said having
a wife that smoked was better thanbeing terrorized day and night. Better a
friendly dragon than a nasty dragon.Huh Right. So anyway, I'm back
to a pack and a half aday addicted, just like I was.
Let's hold it right there. TheAmerican Heart Association wants you to know that
smoking cigarettes becomes a habit, notan addiction. Habits can be broken.

(34:04):
I think he can since death.Around the place, the robes and
house seemed to be engulfed in,and the house itself appeared to be in
mourning, although it probably was onlythe gray sullen day. Valery let me
in. Her mother and father weresitting in the living room, coffee cups
balanced in their hands, so they'dforgotten they were holding. Mister Philbert was
a tall, slender man with thinninghair and steel framed eyeglasses, and looked
(34:29):
as though he might once have beenhead clerk in the hardware store. After
I'd been introduced, they picked upan angry conversation where I'd interrupted him.
I mourn him one store once isall I got in me, so far
as I am concerned. He diedtwo years ago. You killed him two
years or I didn't kill him?I didn't. Who've been accusing me for
(34:49):
two years? And I killed myson? Oh? How long were you
two do this to each other? Now? Stop it. She's been after
me for two years. Well howI killed her son? Now she finds
I didn't. She don't know whatto say to her. Uh, mister
Felbrick, Yes, I wonder ifwe could talk to you and me mother,
and I'll go into the kitchen.Come on mother. H mister Peck,
(35:10):
why does your wife believe you're responsiblefor your son's death, the death
that never happened? You mean becauseshe claims I called him a pervert and
that drove him to take his life. Did you when a young man don't
work and accepts money from men,To my way of thinking, that's perverted.
That's what I told my son,Larry. His mother misinterpreted what I
meant. What did you mean?Larry wasn't never without that camera his is
(35:35):
what I meant. Yet he didn'twant show me or his family what sort
of pictures he was taking. Ithink them pictures is what he got money
for. I think his cameras whatfinally got him killed for real black man,
is that what you're trying to say? That's my opinion. The question
yelling for an answer was who Larrythought it had been? Black man?
(36:00):
Saw in the study war I droveover to the apartment where Missus Worrett had
her personal things hastily packed. Ican't stay. I looked down there into
that pretty little park, and itterrifies me. AMA's worried. Were you
and your husband here when the firstmurder was committed? Oh, I think
that's why Teddy was shot. Hesaw something that morning, something that surprised
(36:20):
him. He got his camera, the one with a telephoto lens, and
he started to take some pictures. We both heard the noise, the thumping
sound when someone steps under the roof, and then there's funny popping shots.
Yes, and the young man inthe park fell. The governesses all ran.
Of course, Teddy dashed out thedoor with his camera. He came
back before the police arrived, andhe was laughing. Can you imagine that
(36:44):
we're going to take a trip aroundthe world, He told me, first
cabin around the globe, because myship just came in. He developed his
own thumbs of cars. Here, yes, in here led me to a
bathroom. Her husband had used adark rout of room and larger tanks,
chemicals and papers. She searched througha drawer because he found a picture taken
(37:07):
with a telephone of young Matt Robsonin the park just before he was shot.
And then she handed me another envelopewith another picture. Right now there
is a man holding a rifle.Picture taken in the alley behind the building
near the freight elevator exit. Theman was no one I'd never seen before,
old as Kojak, wearing thick eyeglasseswith heavy black frames and clean shaven.
(37:30):
That's the picture Teddy took after theshooting. You know the man,
no, but you've seen him before, said it, yes. Where in
another picture, Teddy said once thisis your bank account. With this in
your hand, you'll never be broke. It's too late to hide. It
isn't much too late. She unlockeda drawer at the bottom of one of
(37:57):
the cabinets and lifted out him.In the envelope, I opened it pictures
of the same man. In thefirst there was drilling a hole in the
caulking on the bottom of a smallbeach sailboat. In the second night shot,
he looked with surprise and frighten thecamera flash. It was winter.
Some snow could be seen in thestreet in what seemed to be a suburban
neighborhood. The man slid beside anautomobile. A small object lay on the
(38:21):
ground beside the cars right front wheel. I asked missus warredt if I could
take the pictures. Of course,it doesn't matter anymore. Well, why
does your husband photographed the young manin the park. He was surprised to
see him there, right, Idon't think I understand well. The only
other times he'd been there was whenI wore my governess outfit and treated envelopes
with him. It was strange becauseI wasn't there, and the young man
(38:44):
wasn't carrying his addor today case sayinganything. Yes, And I thought it
was odd do a friend of favor, he said, and look at the
greedy little dickens. The only wayI could make any sense out of it
was to begin with the photograph ofthe bald headed man standing in the snowy
(39:05):
street beside his car. At theuniversity, Norman Fields opened one of the
dark rooms for me and made anew negative of the old picture. Teddy
warded shot from this. Fields madea series of blow up showing sections of
the picture. The bald man,in a state of shock, was standing
alongside his car and beside the frontwheel was a child's shoe. By lightning
(39:27):
the printing tone changing the contrast what'scalled dodging, you were able to see
under the car, and there wasa crumpled bicycle and the hideously mangled body
of a child. He was theonly one involved in the mess who had
known all the principles through everything thathad happened. And I wanted to ask
(39:51):
him who the man was? Byyou, Drake? Oh yeah, thanks
vodka on the rock side, whatBriggs you here? I'm trying to locate
somebody, someone I know, well, I think maybe you do. Thank
you. I'll leave the door openand we can talk while I get cleaned
up. A man or woman?Man? Any idea where i'd know him
(40:15):
from? He had a business arrangementwith Larry Philbert. Say did you lead
about that? Can you imagine aguy changing his name, living a whole
other life. This man I'm lookingfor new Larry Philbert, and I think
also knew him as Teddy Ward.O kid, excuse me? Sure he
(40:37):
shot Matt Robeson and Larry Philbert,Teddy Ward whatever you call him with a
rifle. What do you want meto do? I don't follow you.
I know what this man looks like. I'll show you his picture, maybe
you can identify him. I'm gladto help, of course, but up
to now you haven't given me toomany clues on the guy balled with dark
framed glasses. That isn't much ago on, even do you? Said?
(41:00):
Uh, you know how it iswhen something strikes you. I hadn't
said anything about how my found amurderer looked and out came the description to
a tea from Zachary West. Itook the rifleman's picture from my pocket and
a pencil, and I put hairon the bald head, erased the thick
rimmed glasses from over the eyes, and added a mustache. How did you
(41:22):
drink? I fine, let meask you something. Shoot, how did
you feel when you found out yournew blackmailer, Teddy Ward was really Larry
Philbert, the man you thought you'dkilled in that boat accident. Hey,
slowed down. You're throwing a lotof names at me, like I'm aboosed
to know them. Well, no, that's not true. You know them,
(41:45):
and Larry blackmailed you after the hitand run accident with the child,
so you tried to get rid ofthem by sinking his boat. So now
here. You are in town thinkingyou're out of it, and Teddy Wartt
calls you, and the whole thingstarts again, only this time there's more.
There are pictures of you sinking theboat. I keep trying to imagine
what you looked like when you foundout you were being blackmailed by a dead
(42:05):
man. I mean, wow,I would have had a fit. Well,
what did you do? Follow missusWarrett to her apartment after she traded
envelopes with Matt got a picture ofme. He was standing in the doorway,
bald, had no mustache, noglasses. Just to make the picture
complete. He was casually aiming arifle in my general direction, just enough
(42:27):
so I wouldn't understanding A smart youngcall like you was bound to get into
trouble. No, not so smarttill a couple of minutes ago, I
really thought there was another man. It's really remarkable. But a hairpiece and
a phony mustache and contact lenses cando to change a person. Remarkable.
You know what troubles me though? How'd poor Matt robes and get into loud
(42:49):
and all this? His brother inlaw wanted to help him out, pass
him a little money. I gavemoney to Roxanne. She gave it to
Matt, he gave it to thatgoverness until he got greedy and decided to
go it on his motivation. Moneyruns this ship, my lad, Money
is what makes the world go around. Although I can't believe you're getting enough
for what's about to happen to you. Move please, we're getting out of
(43:14):
here. Why'd you run away fromthe accident he'd stayed. Maybe that little
girl could have been saved. Noway, Come along, now, Zach
Zack. Where's Zach? We werejust going out to pick him up his
cars. Here is his friend Gilberthere, drove it over gil Let me
(43:39):
show him the rifle. Hey,look at this isn't the beauty We bought
it for Zach for his birthday.Come on, gil We better get going.
Hey, you guys will bring Zachto his party, won't you.
I mean we got all this boozeand food and you know the trappings little
foxes a slice. Well, we'llbring Zach back. Don't worry about it,
but go ahead, get the partystarted. Rifle in hand, I
(44:01):
eased Zachary West out in there. He made a couple mos like he wanted
to grab the gun or get away. By the time we got to my
car, he was a limp sack. All the fire was gone. He
tucked the responsibility long ago. Herun away, then killed two men who
tried to bleed him in. Finallythere wasn't any place to hide, no
(44:25):
place at all. He sat inthe front seat of the car, blacking
his eyes behind the thick glasses, letting when had happened to him sink in
and like I said, That's howI handled my first murder case. Generations
