Speaker 1 (00:00):
Once again another always uprights Skier News podcast. I'm Dave Leonardi,
the Skier News publisher and podcaster, and following up from
last year's interview with Shawnee Mountain and the Beautiful Pocados
of Pennsylvania, I am with Rachel Wycoff, the marketing director
here at Shawnee and Rachel, let's start out with a
(00:20):
little recap of blast winter season.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
It was definitely a challenging season.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
We made a lot of snow multiple times, lost a
lot of snow, but our snow operations was fantastic and
even though it was a little bit of a struggle,
they made up for it and we were able to
stay open our entire season and we ended up with
a really great season.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Well, that's the thing about the Poconos, it's the weather
is variable sometimes and everybody has to be ready. And
over the years, all the resorts, especially Shawnee, has found
out how to farm the snow and make it work.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yes, we are lucky. We have one hundred percent snowmaking.
Always investing in our snowmaking. We are making the entire
mountain automated. It just makes things so much more efficient.
We got a lot more snow. We can work with
these variable temperatures better, So we are working with mother
nature for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Now you have twenty three trails here, how do the
skiers and snowboarders access them? How many lifts do you have?
And a high speed regular speed?
Speaker 3 (01:24):
We have one high speed squad and you can get
to the entire mountain from it as well. And then
we have five regular lifts, and then we have five
surface lifts or carpet lifts as well.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Five carpet lifts, so I imagine some of those are
for tubing, some of those are for children. How does
that work?
Speaker 3 (01:40):
So we have two in our tubing area, we have
two in our Beginner's hill, and then we also have
one on our children's program.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
So if family comes and someone's not a skier, they
can enjoy the slopes. It's regardless. In the tubing hill.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Absolutely, you can use the tubing hill.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
You can use our new Mini Monster Mountain, which is
going to be for our little and their parents that
aren't quite ready to ski in snowboard, but they can play,
they can slid, they can throw snowballs, they get to
really enjoy the snow.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
So the Mini Monster Mountain is something new for this year.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
It is where really excited parents are always asking what
can we do with our child that might not be
ready to be on the snow yet, or mom and
dad aren't ready to take them on the snow, and
this is a great opportunity for them, especially if they
have another little one that's in our children's program.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Great and one of the great things about Shawnee is
the parking. Tell us about the parking how much you
charge you charge like twenty five fifty bucks a day
for a car load or what?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Never? So always free parking.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Always free parking here at Shawnee.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Always free parking.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah, and how about deals for senior citizens, like people
over seventy.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Sure, so we get a discount if you're over sixty five,
and it's free skiing if you're seventy year older.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
So if you're a seventy year older, you show up,
you dye your hair gray and come in and say
you're seventy. You get that verified and you get a
free lift ticket.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
You've got it, head right to the ticket windows with
your driver's license.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
And that includes night skiing. You ski at night for free, sure.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Can anytime if you're over seventy. If you're over seven yes,
anytime day.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Or night, and you have about ninety nine percent to
the mountain covered in lights.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Yep, just one trail is not, but all the other
twenty two are great.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Great. One trail is not. Well, it's always got to
be an exception. Now, skiing has become very expensive, especially
if you're tied to a veil resort or even alterra.
But you're independent. And what's your weekend pass costs? For
let's say a regular forty five year old adult.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
An adult weekend or holiday ticket is eighty dollars.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
But you can also go online and if you buy
ahead of time, you can save money on that ticket
as well.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
And they would go online at wwwof course dot shawneemt
dot com, so it's Shawnee the name of the resort,
empty for mountain abbreviated dot com and they can get
a discount off the eighty dollars.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yep, exactly all our tickets. You'll find a discount of price.
As long as you go online ahead of time, you
can save.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Well, that's something that everyone should do. Get a discounted ticket.
Everybody loves discounts, and a discounted ticket for less than
eighty dollars on a weekend is unique in the ski industry.
I believe your competition in the area is probably a
little bit more.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
I'm not sure what their prices are, but I think
that we're very reasonable and it's a great place for
those who maybe are looking to start skiing or they
want to come as a family in an affordable way.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Sure, because the skiing is getting more and more expensive,
especially if people are traveling to other parts of the
country to ski. Well, Rachel Ycop once again, great interview,
and we'll be talking to you this winter and hopefully
skiing here at Shawnee. And if I can get a
pass it says I'm over seventy. Seriously, I am anyway,
(05:04):
but we'll be here to ski for free.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
That's great. Thanks for visiting us.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
You're welcome anytime, Thank you, Rachel. And families are welcome anytime,
and groups are welcome anytime. Do you do any programs
with schools?
Speaker 3 (05:17):
We do, of course, so on Wednesday and Thursday and
Friday nights we have our school groups, which we love
all our local schools. They've been coming for years and
we love having them.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
It's a great way to get school kids interested in skiing,
get them out here, get them used to the snow,
having fun. Absolutely yes, well, once again, thank you very much.
