Speaker 1 (00:20):
Hold again, everybody, it is time once again for the
Silver Bullets podcast. I'm Michael Ciro and I'm chip Minnick. Chip.
We've done it. This is July. It's our July show
in the off season, which means the next time you
and I do a show, we're going to be in
our weekly schedule.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah. I mean, we finally made it through the I
don't want to call it the lanky off season, but
the off season considering you know, the squall team playoff
in Ohio State won the national championship. The season went
longer than it normally would, and it's if we're finally here,
we're on the we're in the week, we're Ohio State
(01:00):
is back to camp.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
I am okay with it. If they want to drag
it out to the championship game again.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
That'd be fine with me too.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Yeah, it's more content for one thing, certainly, as you
and I were just talking about content offline. Oh, Chip,
it's good to be back talking with you again. We've
got one more show here in July. Camp's going to
open on the last day of the month, and then
we're in it. We are. We're going to probably take
(01:31):
one week off the beginning of August and then you
and I will reconvene and we'll we haven't talked yet,
but we'll probably do like a couple of prediction shows
and then then it'll be time to get ready for games.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yeah, like you said, the first day of camp is
July thirty first, and then obviously August first and second.
And for those who might be interested who may not
have seen it, there are if you're in the area
or if I yes, if you're looking to possibly come
up to Columbus, the opportunity to attend Ohio State practice
(02:06):
is available on the Ohio State official website that you
can Tickets, to the best of my knowledge, are still available.
I believe these are just in the interest of full disclosure.
I think these are just kind of kind of getting
acclimated to practice. It's not, you know, full contact is
not going to be anything too too stringent, but it's
going to be the kind of thing where to kind
(02:28):
of allow fans to come out and see the players,
probably get autographs for the for the true freshmen who
enrolled later. And I'm talking about guys like Turbo Rogers,
for example, I saw on Twitter that he will be
wearing number twenty one this year for inquiring minds like
so for people like me that are kind of always curious,
(02:52):
all right, well, what are the true freshmen?
Speaker 3 (02:53):
What are they wearing?
Speaker 2 (02:55):
This is an opportunity to see how they how they're
doing since they didn't participate in the spring. So yeah,
so it's it's yeah, the first few days of practice.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Will be upon us at the end of this week.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
All right, Well, it was very nice for you to
offer to fly me up to Columbus for a couple
of practice sessions. But one of the things we know
those true freshmen will be wearing is a black stripe
on their helmet.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Yeah, and that's we've talked about this previously. That's always
one of the traditions that Urban Meyer started that Ryan
Day has continued that I think is tremendous and just
simply because nothing against.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
People that follow recruiting.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
You and I we've talked about this on so many
episodes where when it comes to recruiting, we freely admit
that we don't really follow it exhaustively.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
You know.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
It's more along the lines of, Okay, the Ohio State
signed a quarterback or x number of running backs or
wide receivers and and we're.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Excited to see them contribute.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
But getting back to the whole idea, the concept of
the black stripe that urban Meyer started when he took
over the program, the idea that any true freshman there's
going to be or any I should say, any newcomer
to the program because there are transfer players now since
since the blackstripe program began, that anyone who's new to
(04:16):
the program has to has to kind of earn their
earn their way up the up the depth chart and
kind of establish themselves and the eyes of their teammates
and their coaches. But with the black stripe tradition, this
is where a player within their respective position group who
(04:37):
is a I'll just say a veteran, will go to
the coaches and say so and so is ready we
can count on them, and then to have their blackstripe
removed the in front of the rest of their teammates.
It's always to me that that's always a good thing.
And if anything, there there are guys that, yeah, they
get their blackstripe removed and they don't necessarily emerge per
(05:00):
se as starters. But it's the kind of thing where,
all right, if you see a player, a freshman or
a transfer player have the black stripe removed, and later
on in the year you see all that player is
contributing more and more. It kind of makes me feel good,
like knowing that Okay, I remember when that that player
had that black stripe removed.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah, it's right of passage.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yeah, good way to think of it.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
All Right, Well, Chip, this is an this is this
a national conference. Big ten is a coast to coast
conference now, as you know, and so Big ten Media
Days some changes to Big ten Media Days. We're not
just going to Chicago anymore.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah. I And you know something, no offense. I apologize
to you. I apologize to anyone.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
I'm not a real big Las Vegas guy just in general,
just because I don't like to gamble I freely.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
I mean, it's the kind of thing where, you know,
I don't have a lot.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Of money, so like the idea of putting it down, playing.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Black actor Roulette or even slots.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
You know, I would probably be not too much fun
if somebody would say, hey, we're going to Vegas, because
I'd be the kind of guy they'd be like, Ah,
you know, I don't really.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Want to gamble too too much, but just for a
change of pace.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
I think this was more because of not only the
four West Coast Big Ten teams. From what I understand,
there's going to be some tournaments that the Big Ten
will be holding, not necessarily like the Big Ten Championship
Game per se, but you know some things, you know,
maybe like like basketball or volleyball or things like that
(06:36):
that might be held out in Las Vegas in future years.
So this past year or excuse me this this couple
this last week, the Big Ten Media Days was held
in Las Vegas for the first time.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Yeah, and Ohio State was represented player wise by Jeremiah Smith,
Caleb Downs, and Sunny Styles. I think three very fine
representatives of the program since they will be the face
of the Buckeyes this year.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, I would say that when it comes to Jeremiah Smith,
the fact that he's a true sophomore, and this is
just me just kind of reading between the lines, is
you know, like you said, you know, he's he's the
he's one of the faces, if not the face of
the program as a true sophomore. I mean, he had
a spectacular freshman year. He's on the cover of the
(07:27):
the EA College Football video game. He's widely projected to
earn a treasure trove of of you know, awards and honors.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
If they didn't bring him, then the question.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Would have been, well, why didn't you bring Jeremiah Smith,
you know, because it's like, you know, he's he's arguably
the most popular person on the team. So Jeremiah Smith
was able to to go. As far as Caleb Downs,
you know, the respect for him. You know this this
is going to be the kind of year that we'll
(08:02):
have to remind the fans of our podcast, hey enjoy
them while you can, because Caleb Downs a year from
now will be in some lucky NFL team training camp
because he you know, this will be his last year.
So in as far as Sunny Styles, absolutely he'll be
going off to the NFL next year. The humorous anecdote
(08:24):
that I found when it came to the three representatives
that went with Coach Day is the fact that they're
all under the age of twenty one. And Ryan Day
made a point of pointing that out. He made a
point of saying the fact that when they went to
check in, somebody had to vouch with him that was
(08:45):
Coach Day because they weren't twenty one. But I think
that it just kind of speaks volumes about Yeah, they
might be under the age of twenty one and young,
but they are extremely talented and Ohio State fans have
a lot to look forward to this coming seat.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Yea, yeah, and Ryan Day said something about team captains.
He said, some of these guys will probably be team captains,
maybe not all of them, And I'm thinking probably Sonny
Styles and Caleb Downs are captains. Maybe Jeremiah Smith as
a sophomore will not be a captain quite this year.
But I mean, I'm not ruling that out.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
No, I wouldn't rule it out. It's entirely possible.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
I think when it comes to Jeremiah Smith, we were
just talking about the fact that the expectations for him
after what he did his freshman year, it wou't wouldn't
be a shock if he was a captain as a sophomore.
I think Jeremiah Smith has represented himself not only on
the field, but also with the offseason workouts. He was named,
(09:47):
you know, an Iron Buckeye, which is always a tremendous
award within the team. For like I said, the workouts
and the performances there, so stranger things have happened. I mean,
I think. You know, sometimes sometimes your best leaders are
those that lead by example, and Jeremiah Smith, by his
(10:07):
performance on the field as well as off, he could
certainly be in the running for a captain position.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Be interesting to see who becomes a captain from the
offensive side of the ball, because there are a lot
of new faces, a lot of new starters. Maybe a
Carson Hinsman.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
That would be that would be a good one considering.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
And that's I'm not saying it's going to happen or
it's not going to happen, considering Carson Hinsman a year
ago at this time, right, and this is not meant
to sound disparaging about Carson Hinsman. A year ago, everyone
was kind of wondering, all right, you know, what's his
role going to be because he was benched at the end.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Of the previous season.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
And then, you know, we all remember the story of
how the injuries kind of impacted Ohio States offensive line
last year, thrust Carson Hinsman back into the line up
and he performed tremendously. So Carson Hinzman would not be
a bad selection in my opinion.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Yeah, he seems like a kid who handled all of
that the right way like you don't get to play
in the bowl game against Missouri and all of the
offensive line problems in that game, we were all screaming
to put him in and and then so you're not
a starter, and then you you know, you don't pout,
you don't transfer out, You wait your turn, you get
(11:28):
back in there, and you make the most of your opportunity.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Absolutely, I think, if anything, it's a it's a tremendous
example of you know, nowadays, and this is not meant
to I realize it's going to sound like a you know,
a shot across the.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Bow at the players who have left.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Everyone has their reasons for leaving the program, but you know,
this is this is an example of overcoming adversity and
being patient and working through whatever challenges that that individual had.
In this case Carson Hensman, you know the fact that
we forget that when.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
He played in high school.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
We were talking earlier about recruiting, but when he played
in high school, he came out of a program supposedly
that that hardly threw the ball. So the transition to
you know, a premiere program like Ohio State, you're not
just because you're highly recruited and highly regarded doesn't necessarily
mean that you can step right in and be dominant,
(12:32):
And so he had is that his share of adversity,
He worked his way through it, and I think he's
certainly in line to be a starter on this year's
offensive line at center.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Yeah, all right, Chip. Did anything that Ryan Day said
stand out to you from Big ten media days?
Speaker 3 (12:52):
I would say probably the biggest thing, and we've heard.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
It in so many words during the spring, but he
actually made the point of this year's team it's not
an issue of trying to defend the national championship, and
they want to win the national championship. They don't they
(13:17):
are doing when I say they the coaches and especially
the players. Ryan Day made a point of the fact
that the players want to put last year behind them
as much as as much as you and I and
other fans will forever cherish.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
A national championship.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
That Ryan Day made a point of the players wanted
all of the things from the twenty twenty four season
put away because in their minds, the twenty twenty five
team has basically nothing to do with what happened in
twenty twenty four.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
Even though we were.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Just talking about like sunny Styles and Jeremiah Smith, and
there are a lot of guys that are from that
national championship team are still on the roster, a lot
of players left, and so Caleb Downs kind of strikes
me as a guy who's one of the ring leaders
of Hey, let's turn the page to twenty twenty five
and let's get ready to win the national championship and
(14:17):
not think about defending it as much as winning the
national championship. So that was probably the biggest thing that
Ryan Day said, if I had to pick a second thing,
and this is something that I will give Tony Pettiti
a lot of credit because not just Brian Day, but
almost every coach.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Was pretty much lockstep in.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
What Commissioner Petiti is Brian to get happening to get
accomplished with the College Football Playoff in future years, is
that Ryan Day is a strong advocate of the idea
of the automatic qualifiers for the future college Football Playoff. Now,
it sounds to me that the Big Ten is kind
(15:01):
of out there on their own.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Petit Ryan Day.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Every coach who is making strong is making strong arguments
for the idea of Okay, four teams getting in and
having like the play in games where you know three
and six would play, four and five would play all that,
all the stuff that's been hashed out in media reports,
(15:27):
it just sounds to me that all the other conferences,
the SEC acc Big twelve, that they're all kind of
hoopooing the idea. So I don't know how successful PETITI
is going to be, but that is something that Ryan Day,
the coaches last week at Big ten media days, they
(15:48):
were all in favor of it. And even though something
has not come to come to fruition yet, there's still
a deadline of December first, so I'm sure the negotiations
are ongoing and and all those kind of things are
trying to be hashed out, but it just sounds right
now that the Big ten is having an uphill battle
(16:09):
and trying to persuade SEC to go along with them.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
Yeah, it's I don't think I really like the idea
of automatic bids. Beyond the champions.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
Maybe there'll be a set of criteria whereby other teams
can become automatically qualified, but I don't think that we
need to say, okay this, these conferences all need to
have four teams, or these can only have two.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
I think it's a slippery slope because the cyclical nature
of the sport. I mean, no, I don't think anybody
expected the ACC to fall off as badly as they did,
for example, and what if they were guaranteed four teams
to get in.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
No, I think I think you're raising a really good point.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
You know, our mutual friend Tony Gerdaman has a and
again I realize I'm I'm pushing for the website that
I currently write for, but he has a really good
article on Buckeye huddle dot com about the idea of
the Big Ten wanting to earn it on the field,
you know. And so if if you haven't read it,
(17:18):
or if any of our listeners haven't read it, Like
I said, Tony Gerdaman's article about this, I think he
makes some really good points. I would also make the
point that I think that one of the sticking points
that I have is the fact that the ACC and
the SEC are only playing eight conference games versus the
(17:40):
Big Ten playing nine, and Gerd's article kind of addresses
that as well. I think that there needs to also
be some kind of a strength of schedule component, not
built upon pre season polls, but upon at.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
The end of the year.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
When you're trying to compare right now, it's it's apples
and oranges like based on the fact that the eight
versus nine conference games, but the strength is scheduled component
at the end of the year to kind of evaluate
how teams did versus you know, I'll just say against
winning team, you know. And I think that there should
(18:18):
be some kind of a I don't want to say
a disqualifier, but some kind of a metric to evaluate
if you played FCS opponents. And I realize that that
would implicate in this not just SEC teams, but in
this this year. For example, Ohio State, they're playing an
FCS opponent in Week two with Grambling State. So I
(18:40):
think that those are my thoughts is that there needs
to be some kind of a strength of schedule metric
at the end of the season. I think that all
the teams, excuse me, all the conferences need to be
playing nine conference games.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
So those are some of the things off the top
of my head. But I agree with you.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
I think that there's it's kind of a slippery slope
when you start to say, well, this this conference is
going to get four teams, you know, I think that
there just needs to be some some better way of
evaluating which which teams get in and which teams you know,
I think it just has to be evaluated based on
performance on the field.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Yeah, and and honestly, you and I talked about this
a lot last season. It was the first season of
the twelve team playoff. Give it a couple of years
before you just start making changes, like, let's let's live
with this for a couple of years and see if
any trends emerge.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Yeah, exactly, And there's it's part of the I mentioned
a few moments ago about the December first deadline. That
is kind of I think that's being held against the
SEC and Big Ten to try and buy by ESPN
to try and you know, get something done. But there's
(19:56):
nothing that says that that it needs to be expanded
or that the criteria needs to be changed. I think
ESPN recognizes the interest in an expanded college football playoff.
So I think the Big Ten and the SEC, since
they have the final say in how the playoff, the
college football Playoff is going to be constructed, they're just
(20:18):
right now. I think there is just a matter of
trying to hash out where they can find common ground
and what kind of changes are going to take place,
not for this coming season, but in future years.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
When you and I had more hair, Chip, there was
a wise man once said, it's all about the Benjamins.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
It certainly is.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
Hey, there's with players now getting paid above board. No
longer under the table, but above board. There's a reason
why colleges are eager to expand the college football playoff
because they recognize, all right, well, this money for these
players has to come from somewhere. So that's exactly was
(21:02):
the motivating factor in my in my estimation.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
All right, Chip, we had a few more topics to
get to before we call it a podcast, So why
don't we take a quick break and get to those
topics right after this? All right, Chip, we are back.
Why don't we talk a little bit about former buck
(21:28):
Eyes for a moment. And I know that I got
a couple of guys playing Sunday football and most of
them are signed, but we got some new signatures on
the dodline. We've got an unsigned rookie, so Eli apple
(21:49):
of the you know intercept the two point conversion fame
against Brady Hoakes Wolverines. Uh, you know, happier days when
you when you had a team that could beat Michigan.
He has signed with San Francisco.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
Yeah, Eli Apple has been in the NFL since the
twenty twenty six the twenty sixteen season.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
Excuse me, he I mean we're going back.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
He's had a very storied career in the NFL for
a variety of teams. Played for the New York Giants
right out of Ohio State as a first round draft choice,
then was with the New Orleans Saints for a few years,
with Carolina for a year, Cincinnati for a couple of years,
with the Miami Dolphins in twenty twenty three, and was
(22:40):
with the Los Angeles Chargers last year. So the San
Francisco forty nine ers. This is not unusual this time
of year. Sometimes there are injuries that take place at
a certain position. So Eli Apple had the opportunity to
sign with San Francisco. So wish him all the best
in San Francisco. That's a team that is certainly looking
(23:02):
to rebound from a disappointing twenty twenty four season, so
maybe Eli Apple can help them do that.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
I'll be honest, I will say flat out I did
not see Eli Apple having a ten year NFL career
when he left Ohio State, he was you know, he
did the job. He was a solid college football player.
I didn't think he was a spectacular college football player.
So this is a nice little NFL career for him.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
It is.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
It's one of these things where, like you said, you know,
you never know how lengthy somebody lengthy of an NFL
career somebody can have. It's just one of these things
that depends on being in the right organization at the
right time, avoiding injury, obviously performing when called upon. So
(23:50):
the fact that he's bounced around from team to team
just kind of speaks volumes about Okay, that the talent
is certainly there to keep them in NFL training camps
and on various NFL rosters, but to keep him for
a considerable period of time that hasn't happened. So wish
(24:12):
him nothing but the best in San Francisco this coming season.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
Good luck to Eli. I hope you collect the whole
set of NFL teams. Man. That's it's like even as
a kid when you bought the little helmets out of
the gumball machine, you wanted to collect the whole set.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
That's right, that's exactly right. Now we're going in the
way back machine.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
Exactly?
Speaker 1 (24:32):
Was it life so awesome when you could just walk up,
put a quarter in a gumball machine and get a
little mini helmet?
Speaker 3 (24:38):
Oh? It was. It was the best.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
And it was just kind of the anticipation of which
one you were going to get when it was tumbling
down the little you know, like the like you said,
the gumball machine. Absolutely Colts again, Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Yeah, I must have had seventy Colts helmets like crazy.
One national champion buck guy has yet to sign in
the twenty twenty five NFL Class Chip and that is
one q quin Shawn Judkins.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
Yeah, and that is that's kind of a vague, very
disappointing situation. I'd be remiss if I didn't say that
as a Cleveland Browns fan, I was very happy when
the Cleveland Browns drafted Quinnhewn Judkins. I've never made it
any secret that one of my frustrations with the Cleveland
(25:29):
Browns is their inability to draft players from Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
And then they went and did and.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
Everything leading up to I want to say was in
the middle of July, was that quin Shawn Judkins contract
situation was the reason why he was unsigned was because
all first round draft choices have a guaranteed contract. In
the second round, most if not, I'd say maybe like
(26:00):
from like the from the first first few players selected
might get a guaranteed contract, but most of the players
in the second round and beyond do not. And so
all of the social media speculation was, oh, well, the
reason why the Browns have not signed him is because
the player directly ahead of quin Jean Judkins, hasn't been
(26:22):
signed and depending on if he gets a guaranteed.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
Maybe Cleveland will give me pinchon Judkins. So it was
one of these waiting games.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
And then unfortunately, Quincheon Judkins was implicated in an off
the field incident for domestic violence. And I will just
say that the news up here in the Cleveland area
is that the Cleveland Browns are kind of in a
wait and see mode of what the NFL disciplinary action
(26:54):
is going to be. Not that they are going to
release Quinchan Judge. I don't believe that's going to be
the case. It's going to be more of we don't
want to sign quin John Judkins until we know what
the length of the what the length of the suspension
will be. It could be you know, like a six
week suspension things like that. Obviously, like the guaranteed money,
(27:18):
all those kind of things is still being hammered out.
So Jimmy Haslm, who is the owner of the Cleveland Browns,
addressed it with a media gathering, you know, about how
this is something that's tremendously disappointing. But you know, right now,
the case has not yet gone to trial, any kind
(27:39):
of disciplinary action by the NFL has not taken place,
So it's just going to be like a wait and
see for quin John Judkins, and hopefully.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
He's truly learned.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
You know, I can only say not only his lesson,
but like I said, the reason I'm kind of hammering
and stammering over this is because not all of the
not all of the facts that come out. So I
think there are some things that like I said, you know,
I have no doubt there's going to be disciplinary action,
(28:12):
but not everyone.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
Knows like the full extent of the of the entire story.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
Yeah, now, you and I will say unequivocally, we do
not stand for domestic milence. You got it, any a
shape or form. We don't condone it. We condemn it,
you know, very harshly. We don't know the fact of
the case. We don't know what the investigators are turning
up or have turned up. So at this point, unless
(28:37):
you know more than I do from reading the newspaper
up there, you know, I don't. I don't have anything
else to offer other than he's an unsigned player that's
currently undergoing uh, you know, some legal issues.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
You got it.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
I mean, that's probably the best best way to to
summarize it is that it all it kind of all
came to a head, like I said, in the middle
of July, and it's just been kind of in limbo
ever since then. So it's just one of these things
where you know, to say, oh, this is definitely this
is how this is going to be handled. Nobody really
(29:12):
knows and we're not going to know until the legal
proceedings take place.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
Right And this is you know, this is unfortunately when
you get any large group of people, year in and
year out, whether it's a football team or baseball team, whatever,
stuff happens. I mean, you you can remember going back
to the storm Cline allegations at Ohio State, and you
know there's always those people that are say, wait, we'll
(29:43):
wait and see we don't know if he's innocent until
he's proven guilty. And then there's the other group that says,
now he's guilty, kick him off the team, like even
even if there's a hint of it, and it's like,
I don't know, I kind of fall somewhere in between there.
I think that there are you know, there's a different
amount of smoke for sir and fires than others. And and
I definitely don't want to ever rush to judgment, but
(30:05):
you do have to take these very seriously.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
You have to take them very seriously.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
And as I said a few moments ago, Jimmy has
some of the owner of the Cleveland Browns extremely irritated, disappointed.
I mean, you name it, because you know, we were
just talking about you know, you know, not wanting to
comment on things, but like a year ago, Michael Hall Junior,
(30:30):
another former high state player, had you know who the
Cleveland brown selected in the second round.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
He was suspended because of domestic violence.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
So it's one of these things whereas the owner kind
of just kind of exasperated as to, you know, why
this happens with these individuals who never showed or demonstrated
any kind of issues before.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
For this.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
For this to happen repeatedly is a frustrating thing as
as the owner and as a fan of the Browns, who,
like I said, you know, I'm always wanting what guys
on the team for this to be happening. It's it's puzzling,
for sure, But I completely agree with you.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
There's no, there's.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
Never, ever any call for any kind of domestic violence.
And I have every confidence that the NFL, in terms
of their disciplinary handling, they're going to make sure that
they get to the you know, all the evidence that
they need before rendering a judgment.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
Exactly. All right, happier topics, chip right out there, We're
gonna find one right now. How about some how about
some preseason watch lists for the buck out?
Speaker 2 (31:40):
Okay, all right, So on a happier note, we were
just talking in the previous segment about the players that
went out to Las Vegas being Caleb Down's, Sunny Styles
Jeremiah Smith.
Speaker 3 (31:55):
That was.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
Not only because of their leadership, but also because they're
are widely expected to have tremendous years.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
So those three individuals were all.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
Projected to be on the on the all Big Ten
teams in the preseason. But that's not all when it
comes to Caleb Downs as well as Sunny Styles. Both
have been on the announced as being on the Bronco
Negersky preseason watch list. So this is something you know
(32:29):
to keep an eye on. A couple of different names
that perhaps people weren't aware of, Tiger Shabola, who's been
a major contributor on the offensive line, as well as
Edwick Houston, who's going to be a sophomore defensive lineman
but as a projected starter on the interior of the
(32:49):
defensive line. Both Tegra Shabola and Edward Houston have both
been named to the Outland Trophy watch List. And then
you know some of the other things to to keep
in mind, Max Claire, who's a tight end who came
over as a transfer from Purdue. A number of different
(33:10):
preseason All American teams for a variety of different publications.
We're talking about Jeremiah Smith being on not only the
All Big Ten team, but.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
The Maxwell Award watch list.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
And then you've got another wide receiver that a lot
of people are expecting a lot of big things from.
Parnell Tait was a preseason All American for Athlons as
well as Pick six previews. So the talent is there.
It's just a matter of getting everyone to be cohesive
(33:42):
by the time the season rolls around on August.
Speaker 1 (33:44):
Thirtieth, right, and finding a starting quarterback.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
Chip well, I believe speaking of people that caught my eye.
It's one of these things where Ohio State on social
media have been announcing dudes of the week, and various
individuals have been listed. So, for example, Brandon Innes was
named a Dude of the Week, but one of those quarterbacks,
(34:12):
Lincoln Keenholts, was a Dude of the Week recently, and
he looks noticeably larger in a muscular sense.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
Then I seem.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
To recall him when we were talking earlier about when
he was a true freshman. So Mickey Muradi has not
lost his touch. He's still feeding the players a steady
diet of iron that they are jesting quite well. I
wrote an article a few weeks ago for Buckeye Huddle,
and I realized I might be in the minority here,
(34:46):
But I do not believe this is a necessarily a
slam dunk for Julians saying to win the job. It
wouldn't surprise me Julians saying wins the job but I
just think Lincoln Keenholtz is going to do anything in
everything within his power to make Ryan Day's decision a
difficult one.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
All right, hopefully not everything within his power, because we
don't want anything all we don't want anyone to get
galu lead here. No, we don't knock about it going
going back exactly.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
I will just say this much that what you know,
we talk about off season activities recently in Columbus, former
Ohio State quarterback Cardile Jones in the summertime has a
like a softball kind of like a tournament that involves
former players current players.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
And a little known fact.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
That that about Lincoln Keyholts that a lot of people,
you know, when it comes to the fact that he
you know, he came from Pier, South Dakota and wasn't
that highly regarded. But a lot of a little known
thing that people forget is that Lincoln Kingholts is pretty
much just a tremendous all around athlete, regardless of whatever
the sport is. So he played baseball, basketball as well
(36:02):
as football.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
In high school. He won the he won the I
want to say, the home run derby.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
This this past this uh, this uh, this past couple
of weeks ago at Cardill Jones Events. So my point
I'm trying to make is it will not surprise me
if we start to hear that Lincoln Keenholts is really
turning heads because everything after the spring game. Ryan Day
(36:29):
made a comment that, hey, going into the spring game,
Lincoln Kekyolts was the leader. Maybe it was just a
little bit of the the jitters and the nerves and.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
It took him attle while to settle down.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
But I just think Lincoln Keynolts is going to make
this a true competition.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Well we will see. Did he play hockey chip because
that's they played up in the Dakotas.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
They he did not.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
But Hey, all I know is like I've heard, uh
and from you know, just another or you know, like
on other social media things that I think he's a
really I think that Lincoln Keynolds is actually just a
really good golfer too. I mean, I think he's just
a really good kind of almost like a Mecca Igbuca,
(37:13):
Like a little known thing that people didn't realize is
that a Mecca Abuka was just a superior athlete all around.
I think Lincoln Keynolds is kind of in that same vein,
so we'll see. But no, to the best of my knowledge,
he did not play hot.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
All right, we want to extend our congratulations to former
Buckeye Billy Price, who is being inducted into the Ohio
State Athletics Hall of Fame Class of twenty twenty five.
The only football player in the class chip.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Billy Price was one of those guys that we were
just talking earlier about, you know, when it came to
like NFL it didn't you know, we were talking in
the in the vein of like Eli Apple having a
lengthy career. Billy Price's NFL career wasn't nearly as lengthy
as I probably would have thought it was going to be,
(38:01):
or that he probably thought it was going to be.
But Billy Price was a vital part of that twenty
fourteen national championship team. So congratulations to him for being
elected to the Ohio State Hall of Fame. Well deserved
and happy to see he's getting some recognition.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
I think some people forget what a beast he was
in college. He was a tremendous offensive lineman for Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
Absolutely well, I think, you know, based on you know
we talked about, you know, when they come out of
when players come out of high school. I believe that
Billy Price actually, when he played high school ball, was
projected as an interior defensive lineman and then was moved
to offensive line.
Speaker 3 (38:45):
So yeah, he was.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
He was a vital part of that national championship team.
Speaker 1 (38:52):
All right, Chip, that's all the topics I had to
talk about, unless there's something else on your mind that
you would like to discuss.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
No, I, Like you said earlier, Michael, I think it's
exciting time of the year because this coming week we'll
start to hear about, you know, potentially about black striper movals,
and you know how certain players are looking, and you
know which players might be making a move up the
death chart.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
So we're going to have more and more topics to
discuss on our next podcast.
Speaker 1 (39:23):
For sure. Absolutely, as we get closer, there'll be captain's announced,
they'll be you know, potentially a quarterback emerging as the
starter that actually gets announced. I kind of think this
is one of those deals where we're going to go
into that we're going to go into that Texas week
and that's when it'll get announced.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a little earlier
than the Week.
Speaker 2 (39:47):
Of Texas, but I think, yeah, like I said, I
think it's going to be. I think my prediction is
it will will be by the middle of August, just
because by that time, and remember I said that the
idea of with the practices, there's gonna be things happening
(40:08):
behind the scenes that the fans and the beat writers aren't.
Speaker 3 (40:12):
Going to necessarily have access to.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
But I think the coaches are going to do everything
they can to make sure that it's fair. And whoever
is announced as the starter, hey, you know, you need
to go out there and just kind of man the
man the controls, but don't feel like you have to
win it for us, because you've got a tremendous arsenal
on the offensive side of the ball. Just just kind
(40:38):
of keep it steady and we'll take care of the rest.
Speaker 1 (40:42):
I have a feeling that even if it doesn't get
formally announced, the person who is going to be the
Week one starter will know two weeks before the first game,
and they will probably have a pretty good idea another
week and a half before that.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Probably, like I said, I mean, it's going to be
interesting because is August thirtieth, we'll be here before you
know it.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
And that's what we're counting on Chip as podcasters. Absolutely,
but not too fast because as you you blink and
then the season's gone and you all you have to
show for is lousy national championships.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
Oh yeah, exactly exactly. I tried to I made that.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
I tried to make that point to my my daughter
and my son, and you know, because you know, just
the idea of Okay, you guys understand like my you know,
like my my daughter graduate from Ohio State but is
living in the Columbus area. My son is going to
(41:41):
be attending Ohio State. Uh, you know, so obviously the
I'm not saying that they shouldn't be excited, but I
was trying to make them understand, like, do you understand that, Okay,
you know the fact that like there have been three
national championships now you know over the last you know,
on me something years, that I went for so many
(42:04):
years with so many disappointments and heartbreaks, that this is
not this is not common.
Speaker 3 (42:08):
So don't don't ever take it for granted.
Speaker 1 (42:11):
Never take it for granted, Never take for granted, Chip,
that you've got a place to crash if you want
to go to a home game.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
That's true. That is true.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
All right? With that, I think we'll call it into
the proceedings, Chips, So why don't you tell our listeners
or remind them because it's been a month. Where can
you find you online?
Speaker 2 (42:29):
I mentioned earlier about being a contributor to Buckeyehuddle dot
com also Saturday Glory dot com. But I can be
found on Twitter at Chipminic. Last name spelled m I
N N I c H. So the occasional contributions to
those websites as well as this podcast.
Speaker 1 (42:48):
All right, you can follow me on Twitter or blue
Sky at Mike thirty six fan, and of course you
can read my stuff at Landgrant Holyland dot com every Monday,
typically every once in a while, you know, I don't
get one in for the Monday, but mostly on Mondays,
and certainly during the season you'll you'll see my grumpy
(43:09):
old Buckeye column every Monday and looking forward to another
season of griping about all of the things that drove
me nuts, even when the Buckeyes win by fifty points.
Because you know, there's no such thing as perfection. Chip.
Speaker 3 (43:24):
That is true unless you're the nineteen seventy two Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
I guess a man. That makes me feel better. Thank
you for mentioning. I appreciate that. See I can count
on youtib. You can also, of course, follow the Silver
Bullets podcast on Twitter at silver Bullets Pod no E
in silver because you don't give us enough characters, so
it's s I l v R Bullets Pod and you
(43:49):
can email us at silver Bulletspod at gmail dot com
and that way that one you spell all out s
I l v E R b U l l E
T s p O D at gmail dot com. That's
going to do it for this week. We will be
off the first week of August. Then we will be
back and we will be getting you ready for the
season and doing our weekly show. So you know, when
(44:13):
you're starting to get us in your podcast catcher every week,
you know it's time for the seasons, the football season
to start, and that's.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
When you need to figure out, like how we can
slow time down because as you said, it always goes
by in the blink of an eye.
Speaker 1 (44:30):
Yeah, those first couple of weeks when we're doing prep
for our show and we're doing our show and there
hasn't been a kickoff yet, it's I want those weeks
to get over with, but then once that first game starts,
then I want to saver her. I want to save
her each week except for the I mean kind of
even the bye week, because the bye week at least
(44:51):
gives you a chance to look around and watch other
games without the stress of the Buckeyes. Are you know,
have a tough game today or whatever. I like to
just sit around and watch the chaos on weeks where
the Buckeyes don't play.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
Yeah, it's it's gonna be interesting because they have an
early by week in September as well as another one
in October.
Speaker 3 (45:12):
But yeah, it's It's definitely the kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (45:15):
Where just trying to savor the weekends because the next thing,
you know, we're in the offseason and that's not my
favorite place to be.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
No, no, can't wait for week week zero. I'm gonna
take advantage of the midweek maction all of that.
Speaker 3 (45:31):
You got it.
Speaker 1 (45:32):
You'll be in bed when I'm watching Hawaii.
Speaker 3 (45:34):
I will that. I do know.
Speaker 1 (45:37):
We know this. I don't like to go to bed
during college football season if there's another game to watch
and you don't like to stay up beyond Ohio.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
State, I I I will I pretty much okay, Like
Ohio State is kind of what I build my routine
around and with the Big Ten, with the with the
contract with NBC, all that game.
Speaker 3 (46:01):
No matter who the opponent is. But it's once that
game is done, like around eleven and PM, give or
take Eastern, that's when I'm okay.
Speaker 1 (46:10):
Time for bed lights out, lights out at the Mintic household.
You got it all right, Chiff, Well, let's turn the
lights out on this podcast. We were gonna be back
more regularly, which is awesome. I always enjoyed talking buck
eye football with you, so I'm looking forward to that.
And with that we can sign off then the way
we always do, by saying, go box, Go Box,
