The offseason has been fairly quiet for the Ohio State Buckeyes over the last month, but the team has started spring practice, and storylines are sure to surface over the coming weeks.

In the meantime, we reconvened to discuss important topics, such as Ohio State players switching jersey numbers. Several Buckeyes will be sporting new numbers on their shirts this fall, and we now know which number some of the incoming freshman and transfer portal players will wear.

We looked at the Sunday league as well, to find out which former Buckeyes might (or might not) change jersey numbers, but have changed entire jerseys. Several Ohio State products have switched teams and some are still in the process of finding the next stop on their career path.

Ohio State legend Eddie George is returning to the Buckeye State to coach Bowling Green. The 1995 Heisman Trophy winner is a solid candidate and could be on a bright career path trajectory, as some of the Falcons’ coaches of the past have gone on to bigger and better things.

This may be an Ohio State football podcast, but it’s one that doesn’t miss the opportunity to point out when things go wrong for Michigan. As such, we touch on former Michigan assistant coach Matt Weiss’ 24-count indictment and what it could mean for the Wolverines, especially if any of it ends up tying into the ongoing sign stealing investigation.

Finally, we discuss some big dates on the OSU calendar, including Ohio State’s Pro Day and the Buckeyes’ trip to the White House.

We are in our monthly offseason schedule, but we could have more than one show a month depending on how much news there is. We will return to our weekly schedule in August, as camp opens and we get you ready for the 2025 Ohio State football season. We would love to hear from you, so please reach out with your feedback and questions via email at SilverBulletsPod@gmail.com Any questions directed toward us will be answered on our next show.

Be sure to subscribe, rate, review, share, and follow the show over on Twitter at @SilvrBulletsPod.

As always, thanks for listening!

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Blow again. Everyone, It is time once again for the
Silver Bullets podcast. I'm Michael Citrow and I'm chip Minnick Chip.
We are in our off season schedule and this would
be us checking the box for the month of March.
We're checking in with our listeners and trying to see
if there's been really been a whole lot to talk
about it. It seems like it's been a quiet month.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
It has been relatively quiet.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
I mean, Ohio State just started spring practice three practices in,
but not a lot of news yet on that front,
which is not surprising. And like you said, you know,
it's been relatively quiet. But again, you know, that's that's.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Kind of what I think Ryan would prefer.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Quiet off season, just kind of keep your head down
and you know, get the work that you need done
and with a little fanfare and with without any kind
of drama.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
We're hearing a more relaxed Ryan day in the Woody
Hayes Athletic Complex.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah. It's amazing.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
How winning a national championship kind of you know, kind
of I think probably puts.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
You a little bit more at ease.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
And I think he's he's earned it, you know, I mean,
all of the all of the criticism about, you know,
losing the Michigan You know, I'm not here to say that,
I'm I'm completely over that. I mean that that will
always be a game of high importance to me as
it is to other Ohio State fans. But yeah, winning

(01:47):
the National Championship in the decisive manner that Ohio State did,
I think it certainly has earned Ryan Day the opportunity
to kind of go into the twenty twenty five season
with a little bit more of a relaxed aaticy.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Absolutely, it's always going to be better when you've got
a brand new trophy in a trophy case at the
Woody and a brand new National Championship banner hanging in
the woody as well, exactly to look at that thing
every day and just remind you that you have a
grace period. Now it might not be a long one
at Ohio State, but you do have a grace period.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yeah, it's certainly not going to be a long one,
but it certainly he has one.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
I feel like it's a grace period until the Michigan game.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Probably, and if you don't.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Win that, the grace period's over.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah, I mean, I think obviously the Texas game the
season opener, that's going to be huge. However, you know,
Ohio State I think will come out fired up because
it is the season opener, it is against Texas, and
it wouldn't surprise me even if Ohio State lost that
they'll represent themselves well. But yeah, I think the Michigan

(02:56):
game will certainly be the one that will put Ryan
Day back under heavy scrutiny by Ohio State fans.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Absolutely. All right, let's start with some some sort of
light news. I guess this is a thing that kind
of everybody always wants to know, you know, what the
numbers are going to be, what their favorite buck Eyes
or returning buck Eyes, or if anybody's going to be
wearing a different jersey. So why don't we just go
down the list of the new roster numbers for Ohio

(03:27):
State this year so people can start getting ready for
you know, seeing these numbers and thinking who is that?
You know, let's get them ready.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, well, I mean we kind of touched on this
on our last episode with Jermaine Matthews Junior. He announced
before spring practice began that he was going to be
moving from number twenty four to number seven on his
social media platform and right before spring practice began, Brandon Innis,
who was previously number eleven, moved to number one. What

(03:58):
from a I guess you could say projected starter. I mean,
nothing has been announced yet, but more than likely he's
going to be a projected starter. Marvel Reese linebacker, previously
wearing number twenty, He's gonna be wearing number eight.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
So that's just kind of I joke about it, but
it's true.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
It's like those single digit numbers are always very, very popular,
and so I'm sure that there's some kind of a seniority.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
You know, in terms of you know, who gets to
pick which ones you know?

Speaker 3 (04:28):
And then you know from some of the transfer portal guys,
probably you know some of the you know, like big
names that in terms of like a transfer portal addition,
Max Claire's gonna be wearing number eighty six at tight end,
Philip Daniels is gonna be wearing number seventy at the
offensive line, ethan On only on while number seventy eight

(04:51):
at offensive line. So those are some of the some
of the I guess you could say, like the veteran
transfer portal guys. And then when it comes to the
true freshman obviously, you know, like number four is already
a very popular number because of Jeremiah Smith, but now
Devin Sanchez, who's arguably probably the most highly touted true

(05:14):
freshman that's enrolled, He's also going to be wearing number four.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Tav In Saint Clair, it's gonna be wearing number nine.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
And then a guy that I'm really hoping to see
just kind of maybe not necessarily in twenty twenty five,
but eventually emerged just because I think it's a really
good field, good story in terms of the projection, is
number eighteen.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Bob penn Miller.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
He's projected he's moving from quarterback where he came from
a small school and Brian Hartline saw the athleticism and
offered him a scholarship to be a wide receiver. So
I'm really excited to see what Bob penn Miller does
wearing that number.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Eighteen.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Interesting number for a running back. CJ. Donaldsonaring twelve.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Yes. CJ.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Donaldson's one of these guys that came in a transfer
portal guy from West Virginia. And so far, and again
it's only been one week. It's the power of Mickey
Muradi never ceases to amaze me that he is slimmed down,
but all all accounts.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Are that CJ.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Donaldson is going to be a load to bring down,
you know, just in terms of just that he's just
physically just very imposing.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
So, like you said, it's it's.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
Kind of a unique number, but I'm going to be
excited to see how he does this coming season.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Same back when I was growing up, twelve was the
number of about seventy five percent of the starting quarterbacks
in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
You got it, you got it, Like I said, Well,
that's the thing, like the whole the whole single digit.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
I'm not saying that that.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
You know, the kids of today aren't aren't entitled to
request the numbers that they want, but yeah, like single
digits like it used to be back in the day
that all right, the number seven or the number nine
or whatever it might be, would be, like you said,
like a quarterback number. And somewhere it just started to
become in vogue, especially at Ohio State, for the single

(07:18):
digits to be very popular. And so how those are determined,
I'm not really sure. I'm sure, Like I said, it's
one of those things where Okay, whoever I guess speaks
up loudest and earliest, maybe they get first DIBs.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Another interesting number change was Bryson Rodgers going from thirteen
to twenty one. Again not a common number that you
would expect to from that position group.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
And here's the interesting part for that is, Okay, so
Ohio State when they issued out that information about Bryson
Rodgers moving from thirteen to twenty one, Bryson Rodgers on
his social media, I'm still wearing thirteen. So it's like, okay, somebody,
somebody is okay, Like, I don't know if you're not. Yeah,

(08:08):
exactly exactly, So I'm saying with a smile on my face, like, Okay,
I guess it'll come out eventually.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
I mean that that's the night I mean.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
And here's the here's the thing that is somewhat challenging
is that we're talking about this right now in the spring.
It's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that
somebody might change their number again, because as you know,
and our listeners know, all right. You know, for example,
whoever gets to where the block o Jersey that means

(08:39):
all right, maybe you know somebody who covets the number six,
or you know, which is like the strong speculation is
that Sonny Styles is probably the heavy fairy to be
declared the block O recipient in twenty twenty five. Maybe
somebody really has their hearts set on being number six,
and we don't know who that is, Like maybe one
of the people that we've talked about already says I

(09:02):
want number six now. So I mean it's I I genuinely,
I freely admit I geek out to this because it's
it's one of these things where I get excited for
I'm going to use the right terminology the Spring showcase
to kind of all right, when I'm seeing, for example,
like you said, number twelve CJ. Donaldson have a big

(09:24):
play and then oh, okay, yeah, that's the new running
back from West Virginia that transferred in. You know, like
when I'm trying to think, okay, well, why is there
a running back wearing number twelve, like to kind of
associate it now in the spring, so that way when
the games are for real in the fall, it's it's
become old habit exactly.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
And you know, you always want to know what number
of the quarterbacks are wearing. So obviously the Tavian Saint
Clair is wearing the nine, and that's always something to
keep your eye on. And I definitely agree with you
that the block, ohs, it's Sunny Styles to lose. I
would think, I'm not even sure who I would put

(10:03):
in the running with him.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
Right, I mean it it all comes down to, honestly,
I mean, I think the criteria by the coaching staff.
You know, I'm sure that you.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Know because it's it's been something you know.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
I I guess you know the fact that you know,
like the late great Bill Willis, you know, the fact
that he was alignment. I always thought that that would
be you know, like that's how you would that you
would always want it to be, you know, alignment. But
it doesn't have to be, so, you know, it's just
it's gonna be interesting to see. But I would think, yeah,
Sunny Styles would be the prohibit of favorite.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Yeah, all right, let's move on to former buck eyes.
Not changing jersey numbers, but changing jerseys. Yes, a bunch
of Ohio State former players in the NFL are changing teams.
They got new jobs, and why don't we run down

(11:03):
through some of the new positions or I'm sorry, the
new cities where some of these players are going to
be playing.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Now, well, I would I think first and foremost, the
probably the most I guess you could say the most
popular one, just because it was on Day one of
NFL free agency, was Justin Fields moving from the Pittsburgh
Steelers to the New York Jets on a two year
contract forty million dollars, thirty million of it guaranteed. So

(11:34):
I'm very happy for Justin Fields. No disrespect to the
Pittsburgh Steelers, but I think that this was something where,
you know, the way that Justin Fields was the starter
in twenty twenty four and then he was benched and
wasn't primarily because of poor play. It was that they

(11:57):
had Russell Wilson that they decided to see what Russell
Wilson would do. I think that I'm just kind of
reading between the lines here. I think that Justin Fields thought, Okay,
by no means, am I going to be guaranteed a
starting position if I go back to Pittsburgh. So when
the opportunity present us up with the Jets, he leapt
at it. So I'm happy for him. A surprising one,

(12:20):
and it was more of like a salary cap casualty,
but then he landed on his feet with a contender.
I was surprised Joey Bosa was let go by the Chargers.
You know, he had been playing extremely well that that
was the team that selected him several years ago back
in twenty sixteen.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
They let him go because of the salary cap.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
But he landed on his feet with a nice one
year deal with the Buffalo Bills. So maybe he looks
at that it's an opportunity to you know, possibly be
playing for a super Bowl contender.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
And then a lot of the other former buck Eyes
that are in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (12:59):
A lot one of the lot of the deals, the
way that I've seen them, it's usually you know, something
you know, like maybe like a one year deal. One
that I'm I freely admit that I'm excited about just
because he's from Cleveland Benedicton and he's coming back to
play for the Cleveland Browns is Jerome Baker. The terms
haven't been disclosed what his contract is, but the fact that.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
A former Cleveland native, former Buck Eye now a Cleveland.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
Brown Yeah, I don't really know why some of these
guys are now going to be on teams where I
have to root against them, But that's just the way
it is, I feel bad for I mean, I shouldn't
feel bad for somebody making thirty million dollars guaranteed. But
Justin Fields had to play quarterback for the Chicago Bears.

(13:48):
Now he has to play quarterback for the New York Jets.
And I don't know if there are two jobs in
the NFL where it's been harder than those two places
recently to find a home for a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
Yeah, I mean, it's gonna be interesting because the New
York Jets, they are on a new coaching regime, so
it remains to be seen, you know, how how this
is all gonna shape up for Justin Fields. I just
hope that that, I mean, the fact that they gave
him this two year deal, that he's gonna get a
legitimate opportunity to kind of grow because it certainly seemed

(14:22):
like he was on the right path in Chicago. And
obviously I'm very biased for you know, everything Justin Fields
did for Ohio State, but it certainly seemed as though
he was playing well in his final season at Chicago
back a couple of years ago, and then they let
him go, and not then he was with Pittsburgh, and

(14:45):
like I said, earlier that it just seemed like they
were never fully committed to letting.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
Him run the run the offense for the entire season.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
So I understand where you're coming from though, being the
Miami Dolphins guy that Okay, now you've got to against him.
But I would be remiss if I didn't say that.
I hope Justin Fields gets an opportunity to truly excel
and that the New York Jets build an offense around
him that will fully allow him to kind of demonstrate
his talent.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
Well, he guess to throw to Garrett Wilson, that'll help.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
There you go, there you go.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
But yeah, I was hoping that Joey would come to
South Florida where John Bosa once upon a time played,
but that didn't happen. But also, Justin Fields will see
Josh Myers every day because Josh Myers went from the
Packers to the Jets, right, Noah Brown stayed with the Commanders,

(15:38):
as did Jalen Holmes. Paris Campbell went from the Eagles
to the Cowboys, so staying in the division, and Luke
Farrell went from the Jags to the forty nine Ers.
Draymont Jones signed with the Titans, after being with the
Seahawks previously. Chase Young stays with the Saints. I hope

(15:59):
that Chase Young can stay healthy and be productive for
New Orleans. You talked about Jerome Baker. Malik Harrison also
stayed in the Division, moving from the Ravens to the Steelers.
Jeff Okuda went from the Texans to the Viking, so
he's been on multiple teams already. I felt like he
was going to be a mainstay for wherever whoever drafted him,
but that didn't happen. And Jordan Fuller went from the

(16:21):
Panthers to the Falcons exactly.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
And free agency is still going on.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
We're getting closer and closer to the NFL Draft, but yeah,
it's usually it's the kind of thing where you know,
the earlier you can get signed, the better. In my opinion,
that the better it seems that you fit into your
new employer's long term plans, rather than you know, waiting
until after the draft, because then it's it's kind of

(16:49):
almost like a game of musical chairs, like trying to
make sure that you get a seat before training camp begins.

Speaker 1 (16:57):
It'll be interesting to see where JK. Dobbin lands and
if he can stay healthy exactly.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Well, he had a great year this past year.

Speaker 3 (17:06):
I'm just kind of surprised that, you know, somebody hasn't
hasn't signed him up yet.

Speaker 1 (17:11):
Another guy that I would like to see in South Florida.
But JK, when he's been healthy, has been productive in
the NFL. It just has been ken. He stay on
the field exactly. All right. Still a few other things
for us to get to. But before we break to
mention that we have a new speaking of former buck

(17:33):
Eyes with new homes, Eddie George has a new job.
He's coming back to the Buckeye State. He was named
new head coach of Bowling Green, returning to coach the
team that he scored his first collegiate touchdown against way
back in the day, leaving Tennessee State, and Eddie George

(17:55):
is back in the heart of it all.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Yeah, I'm excited for him. I mean, and that was
I mean, you want.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
To talk about going in the way back machine to
find out that Eddie George his first career touchdown for
Ohio State was against Bowling Green. I completely forgot that
that took place. I remember Ohio State and Bowling Green
playing back then. But I certainly forgot about Eddie George's
first touchdown. But I'm excited for Eddie George in the

(18:23):
sense that this is, in my humble opinion, this is
the kind of for somebody that is kind of going
through the coaching ranks that the what what I would
consider kind of like.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
The traditional route.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
And what I mean by that is, you know, for example,
like Jim Trussell. You know, he was an assistant then
he became the head coach at Youngstown State for a
number of years before he became the head coach at
Ohio State, urban Meyer was an assistant, went to Bowling
Green before he went to Utah, Florida and eventually Ohio State.

(18:58):
So my point being is that with George, he did
a good job at Tennessee State, did such a such a.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
Solid job that when the when the job opened up, and.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
Urban Meyer still is very much, very fond of his
of his time that he spent at Bowling Green, that
he contacted the Bowling Green Athletic director and said, you
need to you need to speak to Eddie George. And
I'm happy at happy that it's come to pass. And
I think Eddie George, obviously he's he's going to be

(19:32):
a legend for the remainder of his days in the
state of Ohio, that he can capitalize upon that, probably
for recruiting purposes and and hopefully keep the keep the
Bowling Green Falcons contending for the MAC. And what is
interesting to me is that not necessarily this year, but

(19:52):
in a couple of years from now, in twenty twenty seven,
Bowling Green is scheduled to.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
Take on Ohio State.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
So it might be a little bittersweet for Eddie George
in Ohio State fans, but I have I have every
confidence that.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
Edge George can do a really good job at Bowling Green.
I'm excited to see what he does.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
Everything Eddie does, he does well play football, act, yes,
I mean yeah, this guy's got talent all over the place.
I would be remiss if I didn't say that I
had to look up the whole first touchdown thing, because
it's not like my memory is that good. Chip. I

(20:34):
also find it almost offensive that Eddie won the Heisman
Trophy three decades ago.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
I know, I know that that is something.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
As soon as I had written an article kind of
expressing that, like, wait a second, how is that even
possible when it seems like it was just yesterday that
you can hear people chanting Eddie, you know, in a
highest stadium defect. It was one of those people thirty
years ago, thirty years ago that that just seems like,

(21:06):
how is that even possible? So yeah, and he still
looks I mean, he still looks the same.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
I mean in terms of that phenomenal smile.

Speaker 3 (21:15):
He's I'm sure he looks like he could still get
out there and break more than a few tackles. So again,
I'm really excited for him. I'm excited for Bowling Green.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
Yeah, Eddie was one of those guys. I mean I
was at that Notre Dame game famously where he there
are photos of it everywhere online. He's running away from
the entire Notre Dame defense and it was fantastic to
have those Eddie chance. That was that was really in
my days of going to games and being local there,

(21:51):
you know, it's just Eddie, George and Keith Buyers that
had their own real, you know, sort of cheer. I'm
sure there was there were things for some of the
seventies buck eyes, but during my time going to games,
it was cheese and it was Eddy Eerty and that
was it. Man, and the you know, the sixth Heisman
Trophy for Ohio State and tremendous season in nineteen ninety five.

(22:16):
And that's the subject of what I'm writing about this
week for land Grant holy Land on behalf of or
I shouldn't say on behalf of, but in honor of
him being named bulling Green Head coach. Just want to
remind people, especially since you know you're if you're going
to classes at Ohio State now, you probably weren't alive

(22:36):
when he played there. This is a good opportunity to
let people know what it was that was so special
about him.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
That sounds great, That sounds great.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
He's one of those players that even like back then,
Eddie was a specimen. Just looking at him, he didn't
look like all the other players on the team. And
you know, now in this day and age of you know,
biometrics and specialized protein powders and weight programs and all
of that, a lot of players sort of look like

(23:08):
that physique wise, But Eddie looked like that before anyone
looked like that.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
Yeah, I mean, well, the fact that it was kind
of like, all right, Ohio State was the one program
that was going to give him the opportunity to play
running back because physically, like you said, he was always
a physically imposing specimen, but most people said, oh, like that, that's.

Speaker 2 (23:29):
A really good looking linebacker there.

Speaker 3 (23:31):
Yeah, you know, and the fact that Ohio State allowed
him the opportunity to become the legendary player that.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
We all remember at the position that he preferred.

Speaker 3 (23:42):
I think again, it just a lot of fond memories
of watching him carry the ball for Ohio State.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
Turned out to be a pretty smart idea to let
him play running.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
Back, exactly, exactly.

Speaker 1 (23:55):
All right, Well, we got a few more things to
talk about before we get down and out of here,
so why don't we take quick break and get to
those topics right after this? All right, Chip, we are back,
and you know, it's the off season, and we are

(24:17):
expecting that at some point the NCAA will have to
deal with the whole signs stealing scandal from Michigan. That's
not happened yet. We're still waiting for that. But things
are not quiet on the Michigan front, are they.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
No, they are not.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
Former University of Michigan assistant football coach Matt Weiss, who
was fired in twenty twenty three as Michigan's co offensive
coordinator has been indicted and charged with fourteen counts of
unauthorized computer access ten counts of identity theft.

Speaker 2 (24:59):
I mean it's extremely serious.

Speaker 3 (25:02):
I mean, the the the prison time for these this
is not something that you know, like when when we
start talking about oh, you know, like you know the
n C double A this.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
Uh. I I agree with what.

Speaker 3 (25:16):
You what how you led into this is that we're waiting,
you know, for everything this the sign ceiling.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
But this, I mean, you can't in.

Speaker 3 (25:24):
Terms of the gravity of these of these accusations Matt
Weiss is. I mean, he's he's looking at probably you know,
spending if not the rest of his life, a significant
number of years in prison.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
Yeah, and you look at what's been going on up there.
I mean, we don't know what's gonna I mean, what
has come out about the science ceiling. Uh, scandal has
certainly looked bad there. They've already got former former Michigan
staff members who have show cause penalties for other stuff
that's recruiting violations and so forth. It's getting to be

(26:05):
rogue program area. Really.

Speaker 3 (26:08):
Yeah, Like so far, there has not been there has
not been a connection between Matt Weiss his activities and
counter stallions. Yet I don't want to say that.

Speaker 2 (26:22):
There will be but that.

Speaker 3 (26:23):
But you know, there hasn't been any kind of linkage
to that.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
But like you said, Michael, I think the fact.

Speaker 3 (26:30):
That all of these things continue to happen, and a
lot of I'm not saying all, but a lot of
Michigan fans try to, you know, pass it off.

Speaker 2 (26:39):
It's like, oh, it's not that big of a deal, like.

Speaker 3 (26:40):
This, this Matt Weiss story. I mean, when you start
reading about the details of what he's been accused of
in terms of you know, hacking into you know, all
these different accounts finding uh specifically uh female athletes pictures.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
I mean, it's it's pretty severe.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
H So you know, when this comes to you know,
when it comes to pass in terms of the criminal
justice system, uh, the University of Michigan, they're gonna have
to kind of stand in, Okay, acknowledge the back. Yeah,
we had this guy on our staff and and not
try to you know, minimize it or try to you know,

(27:22):
say it was not that big.

Speaker 2 (27:23):
Of a deal.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
Yeah. Well, again, this is a separate issue unless they
find a connection. You know, we we already do know
that you know, electronics are involved in the Connor Stallion's
thing and and uh deleting information and that kind of thing.
So there's also been discussion about hacking. If he was

(27:47):
involved in any of that, and they can tie that together,
that's that's not gonna it's not gonna go well for
the University of Michigan.

Speaker 2 (27:53):
No, well not not at all.

Speaker 1 (27:56):
That said, I don't believe they'll pay for anything until
they pay for something, because I don't I don't think
the n c i A has the guts to vacate
a national championship.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
We'll see.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
It's you know, like, ah, there's so much rumor and
innuendo about what's going on behind the scenes with that
whole you know, with that whole case.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
But the fact that the NCAA has.

Speaker 3 (28:23):
Just an abundance of evidence that you know, at their disposal,
it would not surprise me if Michigan gets hit hard
when they eventually do levy punishment.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
Yeah, all right, Chip, here's something that you put on
the docket for us to discuss. I assume maybe this
is somebody you've actually seen play Max Riley of Avon
Lake with a verbal commitment. Have you seen this this
guy play.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
Yes, I have, I thought, so I'm excited.

Speaker 3 (28:54):
I'm excited for two reasons, not only because of the
fact that he's from Avon Lake, where I live and
where I grew up. On the fact that you know,
Max Riley, you know, like you know, just to put
it in context, Mike Deandra, former Avon Lake guy back
you know, was part of the two thousand and two
recruiting class. Than his his career at Ohio State, he

(29:18):
you know, suffered injuries along the way, but he was
on the two thousand and two national championship team. A
little known fact, but Anthony Gonzales actually lived in Avon Lake,
even though he would always claim Cleveland, Ohio, and he
played for Cleveland State and Natius from Avon Lake as well.
So yeah, I take a lot of pride in the
fact that, you know, like Avon Lake is not, by

(29:42):
any stretch of the imagination, a huge community. So anytime
an opportunity presents itself for a young man like Max
Riley to go and play for Ohio State is always
an exciting thing.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
That's the first thing.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
The second thing was more along the lines of the
fact that Ohio State, you know, when we talk about
offensive line recruiting. This is a huge feather in the
cap of the new offensive line coach, Tyler Bowen. You know,
say what you will about you know, we always we
always acknowledge the fact that we're not much on the

(30:14):
recruiting side of things. But Tyler Bowen has been extremely
aggressive in terms of extending offers, inviting players to come
watch practice. All of the you know, in terms of
what you what you read on social media that it's
his hiring has been overwhelmingly positive in the in the

(30:37):
eyes of.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
The incoming recruits.

Speaker 3 (30:41):
The fact that Max Riley was down to Ohio State
and Clemson and he liked and heard enough, obviously of
what he saw from Tyler Bowen that he decided to
become a Buck Eye in twenty twenty six. But yes,
I have seen him play. My personal belief he plays
left tackle for the shorreman. But I would project him

(31:03):
just watching him play that I would think he's going
to be more of an interior offensive lineman. Wouldn't surprise
me if he if he played maybe right tackle. And
that's not to say that he won't get a shot
at left tackle, But he looks to me like he's
gonna probably wind up at guard.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
We will see see how he looks when he goes
through coach mix, weight training and all of that.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
Yeah, you got it.

Speaker 1 (31:26):
Well, congrats to you in your hometown for for producing
another Buckeye.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
Well we're like I said, it's it's one of these things.
It's it's it's exciting.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
He was. He's talented enough.

Speaker 3 (31:40):
That he's going into like next year will be obviously
his senior year at Avon Lake, but he was good
enough to start as a true freshman on the varsity.
So and again, I don't want to try to, you know,
portray Avon Lake as like this this huge community because
it's not tradition will make the state playoffs.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
I mean, it's been twenty years, but.

Speaker 3 (32:03):
Avon Lake did win the state championship twenty years ago.
So it's it's a proud community that loves its football team.
The fact that they're going to have somebody that's gonna
get an opportunity to play for Ohio State is just
another reason to be proud.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
Yeah, all right, A couple more things before you get
out of here. A couple of dates to remember. One
of them is March twenty eight, that is going to
be Ohio State's Pro day chip. What do you think
we're going to see at Ohio State's Pro Day.

Speaker 3 (32:31):
I think it's the kind of thing where it will
that surprise me if we start to kind of hear
some more buzz about Will Howard, because this is one
of the things that I respect about Will Howard is
that he did throw at the at the NFL Combine.
But it's traditionally it's a difficult place for quarterbacks because

(32:55):
you're throwing the wide receivers that you're not entirely familiar
with and comfortable with.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
And I think in his own environment.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
With receivers that he's very familiar with that I think
he's going to elevate his NFL draft stock. I'm not
saying that he's going to be, you know, contending for
like the first round by New Stretch, but I think
he's going to elevate his NFL draft stock. And then
as far as like a couple other guys that weren't

(33:23):
invited to the combine, when it comes to like tight
end g Scott or offensive tackle Josh Fryar, this is
an opportunity for them to perform well in the drills
so that maybe the NFL teams that are in attendance
will actually think, hey, that that might be worthwhile to
invest a draft choice in either one of those players

(33:45):
later on in the NFL draft.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
Does Frar project more of as a as a guard
at the next level.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
I believe he does. I believe he does.

Speaker 3 (33:52):
I mean in terms of, you know, when he he
played at right tackle. The great thing about you know
at Ohio State is that they tried as much as
they could, which is kind of what I'm reading and
hearing about this spring, is that they try to frost
train their offensive lineman in a number of positions. So,

(34:15):
for example, the most notable that we saw and we're
lucky beneficiaries of Donovan Jackson being able to move out
from left guard to left tackle, and I think that
they're trying to do some of that this year for
the twenty twenty five offensive lineman. But yes, I think
Josh Fryar that he played right tackle, played it well.

(34:35):
But I think probably at the NFL level, probably his
best NFL position will probably be at one of the
guard positions. And then you always know, in the back
of your mind, hey, this guy did play right tackle
at Ohio State.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
Yeah, absolutely, well, it'll be fun to check out all
the stories that come out of that and who is
able to elevate their draft stock. I personally think that
Will Howard's ceiling is higher than brock perties So maybe
I'm biased, but I feel like he was a much
better college quarterback than brock Purty. That doesn't necessarily translate

(35:10):
to better NFL quarterback. But I don't think he'll be
mister irrelevant. I think he'll get picked higher than that.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
Yeah, I would be surprised.

Speaker 3 (35:17):
And my early guess, and I want to emphasize the
word guess, is I would not be surprised if Will
Howard is selected by the Silver and Black, by the
Las Vegas Raiders, simply because Chip Kelly that is now
his employer, And even though the Raiders made a trade

(35:38):
for Gino Smith to be their starter, I know that
they will always be on the lookout for a talented
young pastor to groom into an eventual NFL starter, And
I think Chip Kelly is probably the probably the best
suited to kind of argue for the selection of Will
Howard by Las Vegas.

Speaker 1 (36:00):
Yeah, all right, Well, we'll see where he goes, and
hopefully he'll be impressive during Pro Day. The other date
that we should remember is April fourteenth, not because that
you have one more day to get your taxes done,
but because that is the date chip that the buck
Eyes are going to visit sixteen hundred Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington,

(36:23):
d C. Which I believe is if check my notes,
is a Tesla dealership.

Speaker 2 (36:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:32):
I was not aware of the date that, Ohio the
buck Eyes were visiting the White House, but I'm happy
to know that now.

Speaker 2 (36:42):
I guess, if anything.

Speaker 3 (36:44):
Maybe they could traditionally, because that's a couple of days
after the Spring Showcase, maybe they will use this as
an opportunity to get away from mulching, you know.

Speaker 2 (36:59):
Buck Eye grow Walton, the Buckeye Grove. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (37:03):
Yeah, I don't know how you do that now with
the Spring Showcase not being a game, I don't know
how you can justify making everybody on the loose so
quote unquote losing team go do that, especially in recent
years where you've got guys swapping teams, guys playing for
both teams, all of that stuff has been going on.
It was just a lot cleaner and neaterer when it

(37:23):
was a spring game.

Speaker 3 (37:25):
Yes, yes, and I understand where Ryan Day is coming
from in the sense that, all right, you've got guys
that have played a lot of football and you want
to make sure that they are rested for you know,
the upcoming season. But by the same token we talked
about it earlier with like the new jerseys and freshmen
and you've got guys that you need to get used

(37:49):
to what it's like to play in front of, you know,
a very loud Rockets crowd in Ohio Stadium, and it
helps with recruiting. I mean, we were just talking about
Max Riley all for recruiting efforts because Ohio State traditionally
will try to uh invite as many top prospects to
the spring I know, I'm going to use their term showcase,

(38:12):
you know what, what you and I would think of
as a game.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
So it's a fine line.

Speaker 3 (38:16):
But Ryan Day, to his credit, I think they're going
to figure something out because he said, you know, it's
important that we have some kind of competitive atmosphere at
the spring showcase.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
Yeah. Now, some schools have canceled their spring games and
things like that, and no, we've we've heard on social
media that you know, Colorado thought they might want to
scrimmage some other school, and I guess Syracuse responded that
they'd be up for it. And it really gets you thinking.
What about a home and home spring game Ohio State

(38:48):
against Michigan. Who says, no, Well, that's the thing.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
I mean, it's it's just against like NCAA rules.

Speaker 1 (38:56):
Yeah, you know, those can be those can be changed
or in Michigan's case.

Speaker 2 (39:01):
Ignored exactly exactly.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
You could just break those rules. Michigan has proven this,
so but I think it would be cool, and I
think it would be a money maker for both schools.
And I think if you, if you really think about
what college football is, it's a money maker and any
way you can find to make money, probably should just
go ahead and do it, because that seems like that's

(39:25):
what it's there for. Anyway you got it. I mean,
maybe that's the cynical view, but I don't know. Maybe
you use it to raise funds for charity and nil.

Speaker 3 (39:40):
Well, that's the thing is that you know, traditionally, and
I know in the past, in the Jim Trussell era,
it would usually be money would be raised, you know,
and donated to charity. I'm not sure if it's if
it's now exclusively for NIL. But I think it's I
think it's a worthwhile discussion.

Speaker 1 (39:59):
Like I think if you you had this going on,
like everybody plays their rival in a spring game, even
if it's only one, and you do you flip flop
year to year and you split that money, and what
that could do for the non revenue sports NIL scene
is just incredible. I mean you could you could maybe
have you know, players that are on half scholarships at

(40:23):
some of these big schools that are playing you know,
what they call the Olympic sports, they might actually be
able to be full time student athletes.

Speaker 2 (40:33):
Yeah, good point, very good point.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
So I'm here if you need ideas college football. That's
all I'm saying. I'm willing to grant you my wisdom
and knowledge and then you know, I'll even oversee it.
You know, you'll have to pay me a salary, but
you know you won't have to pay me like say
Ryan Day gets paid. There you go, Oh, not turning

(40:57):
it down if you do, just saying, all right, Chip,
anything else on your mind before we get out of
here for this March episode.

Speaker 3 (41:05):
No, I think we kind of got everyone up to speed.
If anything, you know, like I said, Uh, spring football
is underway. Not a ton of news, you know, don't
be don't be surprised if you know, like this this
coming week again like kind of what we talked about
a few moments ago that like the Ohio State Pro Day,
that that'll be like probably the most newsworthy aspect when

(41:30):
it comes to this week. But again, you know, we
we have the Spring Showcase to look forward to in
a few weeks.

Speaker 2 (41:40):
The NFL Draft. We've been talking about it.

Speaker 3 (41:42):
You know, it wuld't surprise me if we get some
more verbal commitments between now and the end of April.
So yeah, I mean, the the great thing about the
off season is that it just means that we're just
getting closer and closer to the beginning of the regular season.

Speaker 1 (41:57):
That's right. I believe if we stick to our monthly
off season scaled, we'll have four more shows before we
go back to the weekly shows.

Speaker 2 (42:03):
Yeah, you got it, So you got it.

Speaker 1 (42:06):
That's going to do it for this episode of the
Silver Bullets podcast. Thank you so much for listening. Chip.
Can you please remind our listeners where they can find
you and your work online.

Speaker 3 (42:15):

name spelled m I N N I c H. I'm
a contributing writer to Buckeye.

Speaker 2 (42:27):
Huddle dot com.

Speaker 3 (42:28):
So you know we were talking earlier about you know
how I freely geek out about like the new jerseys,
or when we were talking about like Eddie George being
hired as the head coach of Bowling Green. So those
are some of the topics that I've talked about in
recent weeks. But again, always excited to talk about Ohio
State football. So feel free to drop me a line

(42:49):
at chipminic m I N.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
N I c h.

Speaker 1 (42:52):
All right, you can find me on Twitter or blue
Sky at Mike thirty six fan, and of of course
you can find Silver Bullets podcast at Silver Bullets Pod
on Twitter. That's no E in silver because there's too
many characters by one, so it's s I l v
R Bullets Pod on Twitter. You can find my writing
over at Land Grant holy Land and uh looked for

(43:15):
a story this week, as I mentioned earlier, about you know,
the biggest games in Eddie George's playing career at Ohio
State as we salute him and you know, celebrate his
return to the Buckeye State even though it's up in
that Northwest corner.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
I think he's going to do great things. I mean,
you're too excited for him.

Speaker 1 (43:35):
I don't think he's gonna beat Ohio State, but I
think he's going to be good there.

Speaker 2 (43:39):
No, hey, he it starts off.

Speaker 3 (43:42):
He's got a couple I mean, I know, I'm I
reference the twenty twenty seven season. He's got I want
to say, you know, Cincinnati and Louisville. So he's you know,
he's got you know, some some other big games in
addition to his traditional max schedule. But Bowling Green had

(44:04):
you know, a decent season last year. I mean, they
made a Bowl game, and I think he can he
can continue to build that program.

Speaker 1 (44:11):
Well, it is a good place, as you mentioned earlier,
for coaches to make their mark and move on to
bigger and better things. So good luck to Eddie and
good luck to all of you listeners, as we will
see you next month with our April show, and who knows,
maybe be more than one. At this point, we're committing
to one, and if there happens to be enough news

(44:32):
to do another one, well we'll jump in if necessary. So,
like you know, I don't expect it next month, but
maybe at some point this summer, the Michigan verdict comes out,
and maybe we might have to have a special show
for that. We might need to Yeah, all right, that's
going to do it. Thanks everybody for listening. We'll see
you next month. The only thing left for us to

(44:53):
do on the way out is to do what we
always do at the end, and that is to say,
go Bucks, Go Bucks.
