This is six in the Morning with Brett Caine on demand.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Check out Brett weekday mornings at six on Altitude Sports
Radio not E two five and on the Altitude Sports
Radio Act.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yesterday's practice, his little chippy guys going at it ended.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Up with Marvin Vince called Scroach fat on the podium.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Yeah, you might.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
I don't think of Roach as fat, but I I Malcolm,
you hear him before you see him, and I like
that energy about him.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
I thought the thing I liked about.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
Yesterday it was a physical practice, and yet there was
no one really crossing the line. And it's it's hard
to do when it gets warm. But I thought both
sides of the ball, you know, handled the pads well, not.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Rolling over in terms of tempers, in terms of the
scrap stuffs and fight. That kind of attestaments seriousness. These
guys really locked. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
I think you ever go to the grocery store and
you see like a five year old just being a tear,
and you don't really look at the five year old,
You look at the parent, And so I think it's
up to us as coaches to clearly identify what we're
looking for. And one of the things that I enjoyed
(01:20):
and appreciated a lot as a young coach. Is when
we had joint practices with New England, and I think
we had four or five of them in those seventeen years. Man,
as a young coach, I didn't want it to be
our team, you know, with Bill and so once we
had that experience, it was easy to say, let's do
(01:42):
it again, Let's do it again, and there was never
Both both teams were like, hey, we're here to get
better and we're not going to end up, you know,
on NFL Network with one of these bench clearing and
we're just not going to do it. No different to
that parent on ISL eight, you know, I mean, get
your kid out of the cereal boxes.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
What that is? Sean Payton from yesterday, We're out of here.
A Broncos Park powered by Common Spirit. Another day of
Broncos camp and a day after the NFL season opens
up with the Hall of Fame game. What a joy
to watch. It's a blowout Chargers roll. Trey Lance looked
(02:29):
pretty good, pretty good yesterday as he led the way
for the Chargers. The one thing I did notice look
at not breaking down preseason games from teams that don't
involve the Broncos. I don't care about that stuff. Let's go.
What I do care about is that new measurement system
thing that they're doing, So we'll get to that in
(02:50):
a couple of minutes. But I love the quote from
Peyton regarding Malcolm roach of. I don't think of him
as a fat guy. But you see or you hear
him before you see him. I'm pretty sure that's just
another sort of code phrase for fat. I hear him
(03:16):
before I see him. I don't think there's any other
way to interpret that.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Malcolm, you hear him before you see him, And I
like that.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah. I mean if you hear somebody before you see somebody,
that means that there's a there's there's a pounding to
the ground. You know what else you can hear before
you see You ever seen Jurassic Park seeing that little
glass of water start to have the ripples on the
top of it. I wouldn't call t Rex small anyway.
(03:49):
It is one of those things you get to this
point in camp you are kind of worried about fights,
and especially when you go out and you travel to
another team's practice. If you remember, I mean Dallas, the
last couple of days has had a whole bunch of fights.
But if you guys remember who was it was it
Dallas when they were here that there was like three
(04:11):
fights in twenty minutes and then they had to like
kind of stop practice. You don't want that stuff to Yeah,
go ahead now, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
I was gonna say, who whoever made this cut sheet
with all the Sean Payton cuts even put on it
that that may have been a veiled shot at Sean
Payton's boy, Nathaniel Hackett, because in twenty twenty two, yeah,
they had a bench's clearing brawl if you will, between
the Broncos and the Cowboys. Then it ended up on
NFL networks. So when Sean Payton said that, like, oh,
(04:38):
we're not gonna have any fights that make it on
NFL network, that may have been yet another shot at Hackett.
I don't know how many lattes he had before taking
that one.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Well, Sewn just can't help himself sometimes, you know what,
when you I mean he's he's very clearly better than
the three.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Lattes in the morning. For minutes later, I'm regretting it.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
But I'm just saying textures are all like we know
exactly who he's talking about, Yeah, I remember that practice.
I remember the there was one big brawl, but it
(05:23):
was like bubbling up before that, and you just kind
of want to nip that in the bud before it
gets to that point. Now, they still have tomorrow and
Monday and Tuesday that they're gonna practice here before flying
out to San France, so it's still a ways away.
But it's funny. Each morning the air is getting a
little bit, a little bit colder, the weather is getting
a little bit or the the sky is getting a
(05:45):
little bit darker when the show starts. Every day, like
before you know it, Nelly, we're gonna be driving to
work and it's going to feel like we're we're driving
in at one o'clock in the morning. My days of
driving in with sunlight are are close to being done.
(06:05):
But there's a few things like when you're when you
have the Hall of Fame game yesterday and you're talking
about preseason. I have the same sort of thought process
when it comes to any team. When it comes to
preseason stuff, is that you weren't watching for the overall product.
You don't care about wins and losses, but you're watching
for specific players and specific things, and I think the
(06:26):
Broncos are going to have a couple of those guys
to keep an eye on when that first preseason game comes.
My guess is going to be guys like RJ. Harvey
and John A. Barn are going to play. You know,
the the guys that I think that you should really
watch are the depth pieces on this team and who
is going to be Who's going to be the guys
(06:48):
who fill in as the the fire extinguishers, the break
glass in case of emergency guys. You can say that
it doesn't matter and who cares about the preseason, but
I'll tell you this much. When the Broncos have been
as healthy as they have over the last couple of years,
(07:09):
it's just sort of a lot of averages thing where
guys are going to be hurt this year and it's
going to be very important to find people that you
trust enough to fill in behind them. You can't fully
trust them because if you did, they'd be starters. So
that's part of it. But uh, there is a sense
(07:32):
of you watch a preseason game to get a look
at backups because backups are going to be guys who play,
and can you trust the guys who play you know,
another thing is for a lot of these dudes, I
don't know what their roles are going to be. When
you talk about John A. Barron, like they kind of
say what's he gonna do And the answer is always like,
(07:54):
he's gonna do a little bit of everything. I go, Well,
that's a lot to put on a rookie defensive back
in his first year. It's not an easy position just
to jump in and learn. So that's one thing. The
other these guys like Pat Bryant, can they show enough
of a flash to maybe give some guys some run?
You know, when you try and project what the fifty
(08:15):
three man roster is going to be and who's going
to go where, these are the types of games, these
preseason ones that are gonna decide are we carrying three
running backs or four? Are we carrying five wide receivers
or six? Are we carrying five dbs or six? Are
we you know what I mean? Like, that's that's where
you get that sort of separation and answers to your questions.
(08:37):
And sometimes somebody just presents himself as someone that if
we put this is how Jalil McLoughlin made the team. Actually,
if you go back to two years ago when Jalil
was first year in camp. He's an undrafted free agent rookie.
He's undersized, but he kept making plays in camp and
you're like, man, looks like he's got a little something.
Then the preseason game start and then he plays pretty
(08:58):
well and you're like, dude, is this somebody that you
have to keep? And if you remember Sean Payton's answer
that year as to why he was kept on the roster,
he goes, I kept him because if we cut him,
I didn't think we'd get him back, And like, can
you thrust yourself in a category of I am now
(09:26):
like a guy who's too good to lose, because there's
plenty of guys that you would like to keep. If
you watch any Hard Knocks episode, when it comes down
to the cutdown day, it always kind of comes down
to the last couple of spots and the GM and
the head coach are all like agonizing over the decision,
(09:48):
like do we really have to cut this guy? And
Jaliel's a perfect example of somebody who put them in
a position of if I get cut, I'm gonna get
picked up up somewhere else. And if that happens, then
the team's gonna be sick to their stomach the second
that you leave. Once you get put in that position,
(10:13):
you're in a really good spot. But these are the
times that you earn it. These are the times where
I can tell you one guy right now that I
think is gonna put himself firmly in that discussion is
Lavelle Bailey. So if you're out here at camp or
you're watching in preseason games, Bailey's an inside linebacker. He's
number fifty six. You see fifty six making plays all
over the field. And the nice thing about that is
(10:36):
there's a fifty six that's making plays and a fifty
seven who is Drake Greenlaw that looks like a man
child like as big and as physical as you would get.
Leg Wold yesterday told us he's the first linebacker that
he's seen here in Broncos camp that he would say
reminds him of Al Wilson. And when you get somebody
(10:57):
who's that big and physical but also has the athletic
ability to some tight ends, which God forbid the Broncos
ever get one of those. I mean, the amount of
years that they have had linebackers just kind of swimming,
you know, it would be any time that you played
one of those high level tight ends, whether it's Travis
Kelce or George Kittle. I'm sure you guys all remember
(11:17):
that game or whoever. There's always a catch that's made
with a tight end and a linebacker that's like two
steps behind them, and you're like, that's not good enough.
It's been like that forever. So again, this is where
the guys kind of make their separations. And we are,
(11:39):
what eight days away from the Broncos first chance to
get out in the field in an actual game type
of setting. So this is where guys can start to
make a name for themselves, is right now? So three
oh three, five, four nine two five, Schump, maz de
textlam one price, one person, one hour here at Broncos camp,
(12:02):
another day at Broncos Camp. Give me one moment. I
have to look something up cool.
Speaker 5 (12:08):
And while you're doing that, do you mind if I
ask you a question?
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Please?
Speaker 5 (12:13):
So you were talking about the Hall of Fame game
last night, and we can get into this later if
you want, but I was curious if you follow the
same arc of watching preseason football as I do. My
my excitement for that game was pretty much a Bell
curve where at the beginning. At the beginning, I didn't care, right,
I'm going, it's two teams I don't care about, they're
playing in a small stadium in Ohio, whatever, right, And
(12:35):
then I see that ball kickoff, and then my excitement
starts to mount. Some hits and actual tackle and seeing
actual football. I'm going, oh my god, let's go. And
the Bell curve starts to peak. Then we get to
the top and I go, dude, like, ninety percent of
these guys are never.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Going to see the field.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
The quality of this game sucks, and then my excitement
drops off again. But at that peak, brother, like three
minutes into the first quarter, as Moser would say, my
stinger was full.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Yeah. It's just look, it's your reintroduction to football again.
And if you're watching camp or if you're just sort
of dying for some football, like, watching guys actually get
taken to the ground is great. But then, yes, you
hit a firm level of boredom that is hard to
escape about midway through the game because you don't care
about the teams and you understand that most of the
(13:22):
guys that you see on the field are probably not
gonna be on the roster. But you see that first
tackle and you're like, all right, football's back, let's go.
And I'm sure you're gonna have that same feeling when
the Broncos game comes. You're gonna watch, You're gonna see
a couple of the names that you recognize. Then we're
gonna get to the third quarter, in the fourth quarter,
and you will be willing to turn the game off,
(13:42):
or at least borderline willing to turn the game off.
Just how it goes. So all training camp coverage are
out to Dude Sports Radio is powered by Romos Law,
the official injury law firm partner of Broncos Country. I
do want to get to a couple of things just
about not the game last night, but the NFL overall,
(14:02):
including that virtual measuring system that they got going on.
So we'll get to that in a little bit. The Rocks,
to their credit, they were active at the deadline, and
I think it's probably the most active they've been in years.
Uh So I give them credit for we'll talk about
the trade yesterday involving Jake Bird, and I guess the
(14:28):
Rockies are just now becoming the handshake partner of the
New York Yankees. So if the Yankees win the World Series,
consider that a Rockies World Series. I suppose that's what
we have to do now after a couple of trades.
So we'll get to that in a couple of minutes
as well. Then this segment do we drop off?
Speaker 5 (14:45):
No, that was a that was that was a misfire,
not are the Rockies hit? I hit a miss cue.
You were talking about how if the Yankees win the
World Series, the Rockies get a piece of that.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
And what I meant to hit was you'd like that,
wouldn't you.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
Okay, there you go. Yeah. I whenever I hear Nelly
do something like that, I'm like, uh oh, did the
connection break anyway?
Speaker 5 (15:04):
The sports dolls would do that, by the way, you
bring up Rockies the Daisy NFL game and then they
would make us drop that is true.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
So we'll get to all that in just a couple
of minutes. Live out here at Broncos Park for another day.
Camps toick around technology and it's a first down. As
you see there there's the virtual measurement and there was
the line to game. So the lines have a first down.
If it is short, you're gonna see how short they were. Yeah,
they got the brand new virtual measurement system in the NFL, now,
(15:37):
something I have asked for for years, and we had
the first chance to really see it in action last night.
So I don't think they had any that were super
super close. Now I didn't watch the entire game. I
do remember that one specifically though, where it was pretty
obviously a first down and then they showed it on
the virtual thing, and you know, it kind of looks
like a baseball game where they kind of flash to
(16:03):
the pitch zone to see if it's inside or outside.
And all I could think to myself is be careful
what you wish for. I mean, for years, I said,
what a ridiculous system that we have old men who
can't walk straight, that are half blind with chains to
see if first downs or a first down or not.
(16:24):
And it sounded ridiculous and it was ridiculous, and they've
now changed it to this, And for years I said,
just put a chip in the ball. It's not that
hard figure it out. I mean, we are in that
it's twenty twenty five. We got teslas that the cars
that drive themselves, and we can't figure out if something's
(16:47):
a first down without an old man with a chain,
And then I watched that last night and I gotta
be honest, hated it. I really did. I missed my
old guys running out there with the chains. There was
a sense of anticipation to it. There was a you know,
it's kind of like in baseball. I don't want them
(17:08):
to go to that robot up behind the plate because
I kind of like there being some ambiguity to a
strike zone. I like seeing an argument every once in
a while. What are you gonna argue with if you
don't think it's a strike. You can't argue with a robot.
It's not how it works. But I'd love to see
it if they made one of those uh oh, that
(17:28):
one of those realistic looking robots behind home plate that
would just say ball strike and you didn't think it
was that and you could argue with them. Maybe that
would replace it. But there is none of that anymore.
And I'm just I'm being honest. I kind of I
saw it. Now go nope, it's just turning back my brain.
Remember when I told you the story recently, Nelly, of
(17:49):
when I went to McDonald's with my beautiful baby girl,
baby Jamal Klee. She likes her happy meals. So we
go to McDonald's. I walk in and there's not a
single play that works there. It's just a touch screen
in front of me. And I just wanted to burn
that place to the ground. I was like, why do
people not want human interaction anymore? And now I feel
(18:11):
that way about the chains. I'm a hypocrite. I don't
know what to tell.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
You, honestly, though, I know what you're saying.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
But yesterday, how cool was it when they go, all right,
let's see if this is a first down.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
Let's bring up the graphic. Okay, it's a first down.
Let's go.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
Yeah, two sets.
Speaker 5 (18:27):
It saved like twenty minutes. Oh my god, it was
like the pitch clock. I loved. It's just okay, let's
go to the robots. First down game continues.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Yeah, but hang on, Nellie, hang on, Nelly. What you
won't get again is the ball being very close to
the end of that chain, and they bring out something
like this to see if the point of the ball
has actually made it to that marker.
Speaker 5 (18:53):
Yeah, take your note card and stuff at Jean's stereotaor
we got computers now you can keep it.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
So that was new. I mean, look, I think it's
a way more efficient way to do you know what
I thought about. Though it still matters where you mark
the football, like they need to put the ball down
somewhere and then the computer takes over. So there is
still some like there's going to be question marks whether
guys got first down. Still, it's a very it's more
of an efficient way to do it, though, You're right
(19:23):
about that. So to the MLB and the trade that
was made yesterday, Now, Jake Bird was incredible for the
first portion of the year and Jake Bird has really
(19:44):
struggled as of late. So just to put this into context,
before he was traded to the New York Yankees yesterday,
the Rockies had Jake Bird. It was a twenty nine
year old who at the beginning of the sea up
until the end let's see here, like the end of May,
(20:06):
he still had an ERA that was one six seven
all the way until June tenth, it was one four
to one, and in the last month his ERA for
the month of July was nineteen point eight nine, which
(20:27):
jumped that era up to four seventy three. I don't
know if that made it a little bit more difficult
to negotiate with some teams on trades and who the
prospects you or prospects you would get back are. But
(20:48):
the two minor leaguers that the Rockies got in return
is Rock Reggio, which is an amazing name, and he's
a second baseman and a pitcher named Ben Shields. So
they're now coming to Colorado. And in total, for the
two trades that were made by the Rockies to the Yankees,
(21:08):
they acquired the number eight, number ten, number twenty one,
and number twenty eight prospects and the Yankees top thirty
for rymack and j Jakebird. In total, it's a pretty
good haul for a couple of guys that you had
no long term plans for. You know, when you are
when you're a team that's floundering, as the Rockies are
(21:29):
right now, and you are looking not next year, but
maybe not even the year after that, maybe three years
down the line for some sort of success that does
not involve thirty year old Ryan McMahon. It does not
involve thirty year old Jakebird. So if you can get
value for them while they were still valuable, you go
ahead and do it. It's one of the things that
(21:51):
they've been averse to over the last couple of years,
when it was very obvious they were one hundred lost
team and they were refuse to trade guys like anybody
from their starting rotation, which they still haven't, but that
might be a sort of what's the market look like
for them now sort of thing. But the ones, the
one that I think is the most egregeous is Trevor Story.
(22:15):
Trevor Story is still at sort of the peak of
his powers. He's your All Star representative. I believe that
year was the year that the Rockies were hosting the
All Star Game in the home run derby, and they
knew they weren't going to resign him. I cannot picture
a more clear cut example of somebody you should trade
than horrible team that's not competing for anything and good
(22:37):
player that you are not going to resign after the season,
and they just instead decided to let him walk, which
I think got them like a what a second round
comp pick or something like that. But I still can't
believe that they didn't make the trade. Then, to their credit,
(22:58):
they made three. They traded Rymack, they traded Kinley, they
traded Jake Bird and got something for all of them.
You know, obviously the better the better prospects coming in
the Rymack and the Jake Bird trades. But the fact
that you got anything for Tyler Kinley I thought was
pretty good. Actually. I know everybody's hesitant to give this
(23:20):
front office any sort of credit, but I give them
credit here. I think it's a good move. I'm going
out and letting go of two good players for again,
you're talking about in the Yankees organization, the eight, ten, one,
twenty eight prospects in the top thirty and then getting something,
getting actually an actual healthy breathing body for Tyler Kinley
(23:46):
is pretty crazy. By the way, there's there's a are
they clean up porta potties right now? Because there is
a there's an aroma to this place at the moment,
And I don't want to breathe through my mouth. I mean,
that's thick. You can taste it.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
No, no, no, no, no no, no.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
All right, I'm gonna I'm gonna try and power my
way through this. But there is something happening.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
I want I want to vomit. I want to vomit it.
It's building, it's getting stronger. Yeah, all right, dude, I can't.
I can't breathe through my mouth. I'm so sorry now
you I know this is like unprofessional. I can't breathe
through my mouth right now, but I need to speak.
(24:34):
Breathing through my nose isn't much better.
Speaker 5 (24:36):
Coal, if you're listening our our engineered Pat Smith on site,
I need you to confirm or deny Brett's theory here,
like is he having a stroke? Is he smelling weird stuff?
Or can you back this up?
Speaker 3 (24:45):
Cold? Oh my god? All right, So so trust me
if I start to sound a little bit loopy, you
know the reason why. Now, thank you for backing me up.
Cole where out?
Speaker 1 (25:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (25:01):
Cole, you gotta keep it together because somebody like, look,
my responsibility is just to talk, but if I pass out,
you're responsible for the board. Now, Yes, that's exactly what
it is. Anyway. Um so I'm gonna try and power through.
Here we go. The Rocks make these trades. And again
there's a lot from the game yesterday that I think
(25:22):
that can apply directly to the Broncos that we'll get
to in a little bit. The big news is at
least as scary yesterday. Dre Greenlaw, who we're all worried
about right like, A major key to this season is
his health, because if he's healthy at linebacker, it brings
a pretty amazing dynamic to what is already a really
(25:45):
good defense. He left the field yesterday so you could
tell he comes up. It's a one on one, he's
covering a deep ball and he kind of comes up
a little bit gimpy and he tries to walk it off,
but then he jogs off the trainers to the locker
room and you're like, oh boy, what's going on here, Nelly.
I think we have Sean Payton on this from yesterday
(26:09):
talking about Greenlaw and why he left the field. Let
me know if you get that. But Greenlaw leaves and
there is like there's a tangible panic because you just go,
this guy is going to be so important to this
team's success or failure, because the defense is going to
be so important to the success success or failure. And
the last thing you want to do is when you
(26:33):
have somebody like Greenlaw or Whufonga or Evan Ingram or
these big name acquisitions in the offseason that all came
with this, you know, it's like they came with an
as is tag on them. And the reason why you
get those I mean, everybody kind of thinks the same thing.
You go shopping, you see something with an as is
(26:56):
on there, You're like, all right, so I should expect
this same break soon. But it's just a matter do
I want it for for now before that thing craps
out or what I would hate for those guys to
get hurt now and not really showcase their ability. We've
had a few guys have come through town that have
(27:16):
been free agents where that's happened to them. You know.
We just kind of had that example last year with
the Nuggets when you're excited about Doron Holmes and in
the first Summer League game he rips an achilles, like
that stuff is dangerous. But Dre Greenlaw leaves the field yesterday,
everybody's panicked. So Sean Payton gets to the podium afterwards
and he says.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
No, I think he's fine. We in the one on
one period, you know, he felt it got tight different area,
and uh so we'll no more. We'll go ahead and
have you know, all the the procrationary work done. But
I think he'll be all right.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
I think that is incredibly reassuring. Just hearing Sean Payton
say that yesterday was like you had this, you breathe
a little bit easy, easier afterwards because of how important
he is. Like we're talking about somebody who legitimately could
be the best player on your defense. You know, there's Benito,
(28:13):
there's well outside of Patri Sartan, there's Benito, there's Zach Allen.
He could be right there in that category with as
effective as those two guys if he is healthy throughout
the course of this year. I don't think anybody's gonna
touch her tan. But we kept keep talking about like
blue chip level players on offense and how many are there,
and there's probably not a whole lot. You know, Miners
(28:34):
is certainly one, and maybe you throw court in that category.
Maybe the defense could be full of them. You could.
You got Drake Greenlaw, you got Certan, you got Zach Allen,
you got Nick Benito. I think there's chances for other
(28:56):
guys to put themselves in that conversation. I hope if
they do. You know, Hufanga certainly is another guy. Win
healthy can be that, but it's just a matter of
can you guys stay healthy during this portion of the season.
I talked about it earlier that there's going to be
hold on the sneeze. The six o'clock sneeze is back.
(29:19):
Let's go. It's back, baby.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
The po made you.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
That's what I think it is. Huh, I'm gonna blame
it on that. There's a I'll call them allergens in
the air right now. But the key to all of
this is health. I know we keep talking about it,
but it's true, and especially with those guys, because those
guys came with a warning label on them, and you're
willing to take the risk because they are so talented.
(29:46):
And I think, without a doubt, if those two guys
talking about Hufanga and Drake Green last stay healthy, you
you grab a couple of dudes over from San fran
bring him here and just insert them into a defense
that was already third in the NFL last year in
point allowed per game. It's only going to take it
to that much of a higher level.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
And quit on the text line actually threw out some
good advice. Maybe throw a few schmeckels on green law
comeback player.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
Of the Year. That's not a bad move at all, because.
Speaker 5 (30:15):
If he stays healthy and he balls out in this
Broncos defense like we're hoping he can, that's that's a
pretty little bet right there.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
There's a there's gonna be a difficulty with him in
doing it. I I look, the odds are going to
be long for it. So I always think throwing five
ten bucks on something that's that long of a shot
to win, you know, five hundred or something like that,
it's worth it. But the problem with comeback Player of
(30:42):
the Year is it's typically going to like an offensive
player who got hurt who has another big season because
the touchdowns are the things you appreciate. Or it could
be an edge rusher who comes back and has like
a fifteen sack season because those are easy to recognize.
The what Drake Law is gonna do for this team
is going to rack up a whole bunch of tackles,
(31:03):
but he's gonna do a lot of stuff that doesn't
show up as easily in a box score and it's
not as easy to read. But I wouldn't I don't
mind that move at all. I think you could. You
could totally do that out of your Broncos Park. Powered

A couple of stories yesterday circulating one Terry McLaurin is
upset as it feels like many are heading into camp.
This year's Trey Hendrickson is another. According to Jordan Schultz yesterday,
(32:14):
Terry McLaurin requested a trade. Want to be a Bronco
I would love to have Terry McLaurin because he is
incredibly good. Here's what I don't understand. The Washington Commanders
(32:36):
just made the NFC Championship Game. They did so with
a rookie quarterback, very similar in fashion to what the
Denver Broncos did last year in making the playoffs with
their first year quarterback in bow Nicks. The separation between
the two Jayden Daniels was widely regarded and I think
correctly regarded as better than Bo Knicks. His team did
(32:57):
better than Bo Nicks's. I would say that doing that
in the NFC is much easier than doing that in
the AFC. But still, a rookie took his team to
the NFC Championship game. Everything in your power should be
done to make sure you help that man. There's no
question there is like this hole. I don't know if
(33:19):
I want to pay Terry McLaurin. Thing seems so silly
to me. You know, the Broncos had a receiver in
Courtland Sutton that is not Terry McLaurin, but still very
good and very valuable to what you want to do
on offense, especially with the chemistry that he built with
his his quarterback last year. I don't know if they
(33:39):
want they wanted to pay him or not, but they
did gave him this extension four years, ninety two million dollars.
Now again, Terry mclaurin's looking for like thirty five not
twenty three a year. Whatever. He's good. He was a
receiver last year that caught eighty two balls for eleven
hundred yards and thirteen touchdowns. For your rookie. That guy
(34:03):
probably deserves to be paid. It's funny, there's a lot
of sort of crossovers between Courtland Sutton and Terry McLaurin.
They're both twenty nine years old. That's probably a hesitation
for Washington. Their numbers actually last year very similar, right
around the same amount of yards, right around the same
amount of catches, and in the ballpark at the same
(34:24):
amount of touchdowns. You know, I think impact to their
team very similar and Washington. The difference with McLaurin anyway,
is that mclaurin's been this same guy for about five
straight years. He's had five straight thousand yard seasons. He's
caught about eighty balls a year. Touchdowns took a big
jump last year because their quarterback was way better than
(34:45):
any quarterback he's ever had, so that part of it
was different. But I mean, I don't I would love
to have McLaurin here, But you're also in the middle
of negotiation with guys like Zach Allen and Nick Beninto.
Probably not great form if you would bring somebody in
and pay him first. You know, there is some rumors
(35:08):
going around about Zach Allen and maybe they're getting closer
and closer on a contract extension, I hope. So you
know I made this argument last year or last yesterday,
good lord, last year, last week, yesterday, the day before today.
I made this argument as good as Nick Benito is,
(35:29):
and he was an All Pro last year, he was incredible.
He deserves a contract extension. He deserves to get paid
more money. I think that Zach Allen is more valuable,
and it's only slightly, but I'll lay out the case
like this. Really good teams also make this assessment, and
(35:53):
I'll give you a prime example that lives within your division.
You can find edge rushers easier then you can find
interior defensive linemen that wreck a game. There's been three
stalwarts within this run for the Kansas City Chiefs. Three
guys are the ones that have stayed there and been
the constance, and they have let very very very good
(36:17):
players walk to keep these guys here. It's been Patrick Mahomes,
it's been Travis Kelcey, and it's been Chris Jones. Like that,
to them is a non negotiable. And if you remember
a couple of years ago, Chris Jones was going through
a contract negotiation, he set out all of training camp
he set out the first week of the regular season,
(36:39):
which is very rare that that stuff happens. Now. They
played Detroit in the opening game of the season on
Thursday night. Chris Jones did not play. The Chiefs lost.
They had no pressure up the middle and that's why.
And you know what happened the day after that, they
gave Chris Jones a contract. They're like, uh, you know what, whatever,
(37:01):
take the money, You're too valuable. Getting pressure up the
middle from again, like Zach Allen, is so incredibly important
because it doesn't just collapse the pocket or decimate the
opposing team's run game. It provides opportunity for guys like
(37:23):
Benito and Jonathan Cooper and John Franklin Myers and so
on and so forth, all these guys that are rushing
from the edge, that are outside of Zach Allen that
are getting first of all, one on one pressures because
Zach Allen is such a monster. But second of all,
you collapse the pocket, where does the quarterback go hopefully
(37:44):
right into the waiting arms of somebody on the outside.
And so that is just a value that I don't
even know if you can put a number on Zach
Allen is closer to the Chris Jones level of a
defensive tackle, then Nick Benito is at least for now
(38:04):
to the TJ. Watt Miles Garrett level that those guys
are at. Now, I think you pay him both. But
if I had to prioritize, I think I sign Zach
Allen first to make sure that's done. You know, there, Benito,
I don't think is operating or negotiating from a top
(38:25):
of the line money standpoint right now. Zach Allen might be,
he might be close to it anyway, but Benito is.
You know, if another edge rusher gets paid and ups
the market even more, he's not competing for forty million
dollars a year now. If he goes out this year
and doesn't sign a contract before the season starts and
(38:46):
gets an eighteen sax season, well then that changes the
discussion entirely. But I think that there's a there's a
huge value to having an interior rush, and Zach Allen
is as valuable as anyone not named Pats or Tan
I would say on this team. He's that valuable. By
(39:09):
the way, I'm getting mildly concerned, Nelly. Why would you
think I'm getting concerned right now?
Speaker 1 (39:15):
Oh, our boy isn't out shuffling doing.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
The knees I've seen. I've not seen Brandon Jones barefoot
out here yet. I hope he's okay. He's like, you know,
when you were a kid, you always watched the same
TV show before you went to school. You know, whether
it's a I don't know. I watched Rugrats when I
was a kid, before I would Rugrats was a great
show on Nickelodeon. I know. I don't got my Rugrats
(39:41):
on this morning. I turned on Nickelodeon and they're playing
the news and I'm like that eight year old, going,
what's this? What's going on here? It's not what I
I didn't sign up for this.
Speaker 5 (39:51):
We have no reason to play the Cupid shuffle. What's
going on here? Where's he going?
Speaker 3 (39:57):
I'm concerned?
Speaker 1 (39:58):
I yeah, me too. Maybe maybe when Brandon.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
Jones is not out here at six forty five in
the morning doing his morning laps barefoot in boxer briefs,
what are you pointing at? Oh, that's not Brandon Jones.
That is not him. Brandon Jones is. You will know
when you see Brandon Jones because he won't be wearing shoes.
He looks very athletic, and he will be doing odds,
(40:22):
squats and shuffles all the way across the field, and
I hope. Look, I don't know if I'm breaking news here.
Maybe he's dealing with an Andrey. Yeah, I'm not saying
that he is, but there's been a constant here. I'm
just saying I'm not the reporting type. But I know trends.
I recognize patterns. I'm a human and I don't see this.
(40:46):
I need my friend back out here. And yes he
is my friend. Does he know me at all? No?
Not the point when he spends a little bit of
time out here this morning with me, every single day
and he's not here, it's noticeable. So keep this in mind.
Everybody listening right now, you loyal listeners to this Appetizer hour,
(41:10):
You listen to me, and you listen. Good if it
comes out. If you see news today that Brandon Jones
is dealing with a little something, just know this. I
reported it first, and I want to be given credit
for this. Do I have sources help record this? I
don't have sources. The sources are my eyeballs in ability
(41:30):
to recognize patterns. And you just let everybody know. If
you see one report from anybody, you tell them. Brett
Kane reported this first because there was no Cupid shuffle
during the six o'clock hour. Okay, wait a minute, wait
a minute, time out. Somebody has walked out by the
weight room facility, taking a walk across the parking lot.
(41:52):
Who is this? He's in a sweatshirt, col do you
see shoes? That's not him. I'm officially concerned. We're about
motion Vicker about to get here, and I've not seen
Brandon Jones. I am going to go ahead and say, please, no,
maybe he's just had a rough morning. I don't know
what it is, but you know what, if he's hurt,
just let people know. I said it first. I'm not
(42:15):
the breaking news type, but I want my credit when
I do it. Damn it, I want it. So three
