Speaker 1 (00:29):
I fully expect this to be overreacting in some way
or another when it comes to the Broncos first preseason game.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
I didn't you know, I was off for a week.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
I don't know if people were saying what people are
feeling about this game heading into it, if people cared
as much about the results. And then the game started
kind of perusing following along on Twitter, and I realized, yep,
people aren't going to overreact.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
I am not. It is not going to be something
that I'm going to look at and.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Decide because this is a decision to make. Decide to
say the starting offense is bad and we're screwed this year,
and all the different stuff that I'm sure you've heard
from a thousand other people. It's pre season. I don't

(01:28):
really care. I don't know how many times I've said
this on air, but I'll say it again. This is
purely and totally about individuals and how they perform.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
And that's it. So did bo Nicks miss a couple throws? Sure?

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Did he underthrow Sutton on a one on one ball
in the end zone?

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Do I I think that's any indication of what's to
come when Week one rolls around.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
No? No, really, don't you know?

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Texter said, I cared about the result. I had twenty
dollars on the Broncos at minus six. Well, then cash
the ticket, buddy, Where do you go?

Speaker 2 (02:18):
You nailed it. All I'm getting at here is there's a.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
There is things that I want to talk about that
I feel like our takeaways from this game. But if
one of them that sticks out to you is, hey,
the offense stunk, I'm not buying it, or starting defense
first drive, gives up a touchdown. Don't really cares. That's

(02:47):
not the stuff that I'm looking for. Individual things are different. Now,
I'll tell you when you're playing against backups in the
way that the Bronco starters were. I mean, first of all,
some of the guys that they're throwing out there on

(03:09):
San Francisco's side, which was a you know, when they
brought in Carter Bradley, I'm like, what in the world
is a Carter Bradley?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Never heard of that before? Tanner Mordecai.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
I did, just because I kind of remember him from
college kind of. But there was a guy named kind
of running the football. There was just a whole bunch
of dudes that you've never heard of, and your expectation is, well,
then the starters will go out there and roll. I
don't think that's the way that things are played. If
you think that Sean Payton is going to go out

(03:44):
there and actually show some sort of offensive something, you're not.
But I went into the game looking for a few things.
So if you would like to quote.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Overreact to the the.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Bo Nick's debut for this season or whatever else that,
I mean, go ahead. I had my eyes set on
just a couple of different details.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Number One, did it.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Look like they could run the football? And I'll tell
you this, RJ. Harvey I thought looked really good. They
certainly gave him his touches early. They were trying to
get a look at him, trying to get him in
a rhythm, and.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
I thought R J.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Harvey, he showed It's what I said, all camp and
explosiveness from that position that.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
They otherwise have not had for a long time.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
I think pre Javonte knee injury is the last time
they had somebody with a burst like that.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
So that was nice to see. Getting the mix in
with JK.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Dobbins and where I think they're going to be a
pretty heavy one two punch. I think Dobbins is probably
going to take, at least initially on the year, a
lot of third down duties. If there's one criticism I
had of RJ. Harvey, it'z that it felt like he
tried to bounce things outside, maybe a little too much,

(05:19):
because he knows he's fast, he knows he has that burst,
and so he wants to get outside and make something happen.
But other than that, I mean, just seeing that the
burst was there was good enough for me. Perhaps the
most interesting thing of that entire game in my opinion,

(05:39):
because I've been trying to figure out this running back
room for a long time and it's been very confusing
for not just this offseason, but the off season previous.
I had a burning question that just sat with me
that I don't really understand, and it was why was

(06:01):
Orodric Estimate inactive for that playoff game? He was healthy
and did not play, and we've heard some grumblings that
maybe he's a little bit upset at camp with where
his touches are and where he's at in the rotation
and blah blah blah. So I was watching, all right,

(06:23):
what's that sterma gonna do? And here's what's really interesting.
I watched Dr J. Harvey play, and then I watched JK.
Dobbins come in, and then I watched Jalio get a
few carries, and then I watched Tyler Baday, and then

(06:45):
I watched Blake Watson get in the game. And then
I saw Estimate, which for him, I don't think is
a great sign, and it's probably not a great.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Sign for multiple reasons.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
One of them is they gave Estimate a lot of
run at the end of that game because they were
up big and estimated eight carries for twenty one yards. Now,
backup offensive lineman maybe couldn't create holes. I mean, whatever
you want to say, but the rotations, the rotation and
the thing is today and Blake Watson actually looked pretty good,

(07:26):
Like if you were looking for the guys that sort
of fill out the practice squad depth, they looked a
lot better.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
And I don't know, even for me, I don't know
why the estimate thing is such a big deal that
sticks out in my mind. He's a fifth round pick
and we have discussed doddric estime as if.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
He's like a second And I think part of the
reason was he was kind of exciting to watch last
year during the.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Off season.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
He was a guy that with his size, it just
it looked like he's a dude that could do some
damage when he gets to top end speed.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
He's pretty fast.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Like there's just a lot of like physical attributes about
his game to like I'm sure we've all kind of
had that before where you see, you know, I think
a great example is probably Quentin Johnston over in Los
Angeles that like, do you want a guy who's six
foot four that's really really fast? Yes, I do, But

(08:39):
he can't catch. That's a pretty big job of being
a wide receiver and that's why he's frustrating the hell
out of people in Los Angeles with the Chargers, like
estimate has the You look at the guy physically and
you go, I would love for that guy to be
a running back on my football team. But he really
just hasn't taken advantage of opportunities he's been given. You know,

(09:03):
it looked like you had a couple of nice runs
early in the year and then you put the ball
on the ground. The number one thing that Sean Payton
is looking out of guys or looking from guys is trust.
Can I trust you when I put you in to
not do something stupid? Well, you put the ball on
the ground a couple of times and you have it.
You had a tough time getting on the field before that.

(09:26):
That's how you find yourself in a little bit of
a pickle. But I was I said this during camp.
I've I talked to people at camp about this. Here's
a name that I'm just gonna tell you.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
To look out for.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Okay, there was a guy that was signed in the offseason.
That was the reasoning behind it was that he's a
special team's ace and that's what his role is going
to be. And I'm sure that's it is going to
be a role.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
That he has. I just don't know if it's gonna be.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
The only role because on the subject to trust, we've
seen Sean Payton put guys in that maybe have this
ceiling and the potential that is less than somebody else
just because he trusts them when they're on the floor.
He's got a little bit of that Michael Malone in

(10:25):
him where it's like, I would be way more willing
to put the less talented guy out there because I
know what he's gonna do as opposed to the guy
that has a higher talent level but a lot more
variance in the day to day or I guess in
this case, play to play. Trent Sherfield is somebody that

(10:48):
could be your little Jordan Humphreys. He could be the
guy where you're like, why is he playing over X
guy who's got way more potential? Well, because he does
his job in a way that Sean Payton can trust.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
And to be fair, he had a great game. He's
had a great camp.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
If you watch him out of training camp, Trent Sherfield
is somebody that sticks out.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
He really does.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
But you look at just a loaded room because Pat
Brian had a really good debut, you know, he was
the third round pick that I'm still kind of wondering
where he's going to fit at least early in his
tenure as of Bronco, because he's got talent. It's funny,
every time they lined up for a pass, everybody looked
the same. Everybody was six foot four of the big butt,

(11:39):
all of them. He's got a type. Sean Payton's got
a type at wide receiver, and they all look like that.
But I thought Pat Brian played great. It's just it's
a very very obvious thing of what they're trying to
do on offense. Now, there's a lot of things defensively

(12:03):
that I would like to talk about here in a
little bit, but don't be a stranger. I'm back after
a week off, So go ahead and throw a text
my wife three O three five oh four oh nine
two five. TEXTA says, where the hell were you? I
was playing golf most of the time. And if you're curious,

(12:23):
of course, my team won this Ryder Cup. I you know,
it's it was the most obvious thing in the world.
I thought about coming back on Wednesday because we had
it in the bag.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
But go ahead and throw me a text.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Three oh three five oh four oh nine two five
shop Matt to text line one price, one person.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
One hour.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
Remember, whether we're out at camp or not, we are
always whenever we are discussing camp, breaking it down on
behalf of our friends at Rama Law.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
So a lot more on the.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
Defensive side that I want to get to in just
a little bit, because if there was concerns about the
offense that you had in the first team and how
they played against the backups against San Francisco, I'm surprised
that Nick Benito didn't play that one drive tally two

(13:25):
sacks and then almost get a third, walk off the
field and just say I refuse, like take his pads off,
set them in front of Sean Payton and be like,
next time I put these on, I will be paid.
And I'll tell you this much. We've kind of had
the discussion when it comes to Nick Benito. There is

(13:49):
a balance here, and it just depends on what you
want to do and how much you trust that this
guy is going to replicate what he did last year.
If you think he's gone, then you pay now. If
you still have questions, then you make improve it. The
good news would be this, if he is going into

(14:10):
quote a contract year where he's looking to make you know,
top end Edgresher money. That is a motivational chip that
leads to some huge seasons that would be really beneficial
for the Broncos, but wouldn't be beneficial for how much
they're gonna have to pay him afterwards. So I do
want to talk about the defense in just a couple

(14:31):
of minutes. Uh, happy to be back back at three minutes.
I thought about just doing my best Burdo voice and
just pretending that it was still Burdo that was here.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
Broncos game over the week, Yet like I can't. I
couldn't do that for like the I don't know five
minutes anyway, So to the Broncos defense. Fade this music
down for me, Jesse, fade my music down.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
There.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
We go to the Broncos defense. We know how good
this defense is going to be. And again I'm not
concerned at all with you give up the touchdown on
the opening drive and oh bo Nicks took a sack

(15:38):
because he didn't want to take a hit in the
ends out.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
That's what that play was, by the way.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
Regular season, I bet you Bownicks tries to do something differently,
but it was a free rusher, and he was like,
I am not getting smoked by a free rusher.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
You can go ahead and have two points. This doesn't matter.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
Bottom line is the defense looked great and you could say, ah,
that side of that first first drive, do not care.
You can tell with all the pieces that they have
that there is just an insane talent level to them,

(16:22):
with depth at a lot of different positions. I mean,
right out of the gates, justin Sternad who's filling in
for obviously Greenlaw didn't play, blows up a play in
the backfield, just absolutely demolishes it. You had sort of

(16:43):
one bad, really one bad play in which McMillan got
beat on that first drive, but everything after that was
kind of like, Okay, door is shut and you can
see it. Like I give Sean Payton full credit, by
the way, for putting guys out there and playing. I
don't know what the aversion is for most teams to

(17:04):
not doing this is. I know it's like you're concerned
about guys getting hurt and blah blah blah, but it's like,
if you want to be good at football, then you
need to practice football, and that includes taking eyes to
the ground and the only way you're going to get
that really is in these preseason games. So if you
give them at least a couple of drives out there

(17:26):
to actually go hit somebody, take some aggression out, I
think it's smart.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
But each position on defense has good starters with people
behind them that are trustworthy.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
I mean, the one possession out of Nick Benito was
just like a message of I'm ready for my contract
now please.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
That's it. He has pretty insane bend.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
He's really quick to get around guys, and then when
he does get a step on somebody, he's on top
of the quarterback within like half a second.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
It's that quick.

Speaker 1 (18:12):
But one of the things that if you remember from
last year, that was a big concern for the Broncos.
Their defensive front was as dominant as you could get.
They led the league in pressures and it wasn't particularly
close with teams that were in second and third.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
And fourth place. They crushed them.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
The concern happened towards the end of the year, and
this is where numbers get a little bit screwy. You
look at the end of the year, where did the
Broncos defense finish, and in a lot of categories, whether
it's team defense talking about total yards or you're talking
about points allowed per game, Like they were third in

(18:58):
the league in points allowed per they were.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Seventh.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
I think it was in yards allowed, but you have
to factor in the defense kind of struggled towards the
end of the year.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
What really started to even things out.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
Was the throwaway game that Kansas City gave you the
last week, in which you won thirty eight to Nutting.
And in that game, if you remember, Carson Wentz didn't
even throw for one hundred yards. They had five total
first downs in that game, Like Kansas City just punted it.
They're like, we don't care. With one seed, we made

(19:40):
the playoffs, that's it.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Have your win. So I think those.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Skewed the numbers a little bit more towards the Broncos
looking better statistically than maybe they should have finished last year.
And a big reason for that was because when the
Broncos got towards i would say like week.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Week thirteen, they had a lot.

Speaker 1 (20:04):
Of struggles in the secondary because their secondary was beat up.
You know, there were games in which Sertan wasn't fully healthy.
They lost Riley Moss for a while. They were trying
to find his replacement. Levi Wallace wasn't the answer. Throw
in a rookie. It was tough, and in that stretch
you gave up thirty one points, then thirteen to Indianapolis, then.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
Thirty four to the Chargers, thirty.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
To Cincinnati, and then you had the Chiefs game in
which they didn't try. Once you got to the playoffs,
I think you saw some cracks defensively, and it was
in that depth of the secondary. You know, the season
ended with the thirty one to seven loss to Buffalo.
They have depth in the secondary now, or at least

(20:53):
it looks that way, and that's why. You know, didn't
see a lot of John A. Barron in that game,
but the one play that he did he was noticeable. No,
he said this about him a lot.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
He might not be.

Speaker 1 (21:08):
Super tall and big, you know, it's not like his
size is going to stand out to anybody, but he
has a willingness to hit and he did that in
the game.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
He had one pretty big hit.

Speaker 1 (21:23):
I think it was early second quarter if I remember right,
but he laid a lick on somebody because he's willing
to stick his nose in there and do some dirty stuff.
But the drafting of John day Baron was I think
a direct sort of answer towards not having that happen again,
which is guy goes down with an injury in the

(21:45):
secondary and then you're just kind of panicked. But you've
now given a guy like Chris abrams Drain another year.
And abrams Drain looks like he's taken a pretty big jump.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
You know. I've always been king guys like guys like him.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
When you're a mid round pick ish in the draft
at that position, you're typically not ready to jump in
right away because corners it takes a second for him
to get it, because they're playing a really really different
style in the NFL than they were in college, and
a lot of guys have like a year two bump,

(22:23):
and I think Abrams Drain is one of them.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
I thought he looked great but able to come.

Speaker 1 (22:31):
Away with a few interceptions in that game, one from
that linebacker Reid who pulled one down, McMillan got one,
and then Josh Pikett with another. But it's just it's
it's a different level of depth that they had in
the secondary than previous than certainly the previous year. In

(22:54):
last year, but they seem to have depth kind of everywhere.
You know, the guy who's kind of in the darling
of camp at the linebacker spot, Lavelle Bailey. I thought
he played well. Justin Sternatt obviously is always somebody that
they've been able to trust in the in a pinch
when they had to.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
But even.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
Like I am so excited about the year two depth
of in year three depth of some guys.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
On that defensive line.

Speaker 1 (23:25):
You know, ke Robinson has been pegged to somebody to
watch their rookie this year. But another year under the
belt for Jonah Ellis, you know, you can finally sort
of get an answer on a really interesting guy. They
had high hopes for him. A dude him I'm about
to bring up right now, but because of injury and
a fully suspended season for him. He was one of

(23:47):
the first guys I'm talking about Ajasa Rique who got
hit with that gambling so you're suspended for the year
thing when they were just sort of implementing that stuff.

Speaker 2 (23:59):
So he's now into year it's year four.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
I think it's year four for him, with really no
playing time under his belt. He's played twelve games in
his career so far, but he's a really intriguing guy
because he's big. It's like six six three point thirty
big dude, really strong. Just adds a lot more depth
to the interior of that defensive line, provides depth behind

(24:29):
guys like Zach Allen and Malcolm Roach and JFM and
a whole bunch of different guys that are kind of
doing the dirty work up the middle. They just got
depth in a lot of different places. Texter says, love
the excuse for bo. If he would have went off,

(24:51):
you guys would have been putting him in MVP contention.
Maybe others would have. It wouldn't be me if you
think that.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
I have a year's worth of evidence with bo Nicks
so far.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
If you think that I'm going to throw that away
for like three drives in a preseason game and have
that be my measuring stick to your nuts. If bo
Nicks went out and did what Stidham did, which, by

(25:30):
the way, haven't even mentioned Stidham yet, but he went
fourteen to fifteen, four hundred and thirty six yards and
two touchdowns, also ran the ball three times for thirty
six yards.

Speaker 2 (25:43):
You're saying if he did that, then I'd be freaking out.
I would not.

Speaker 1 (25:50):
You know, part of it is that's what you're supposed
to do. He didn't look great. I don't really care.
I've seen what he looks like against the Chiefs already.
I've seen what he looks like against a lot of
different teams in this league.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
I'm not concerned about him.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
I saw what he did towards the end of last year,
once he finally got a little bit of experience. Oh
say this, it would make you feel better, Like you'd
feel better about him going out there if he had,
you know, a couple of touchdowns and was eight of
nine throwing the football for ninety yards.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
Yeah, you'd feel better. I just don't really care.

Speaker 1 (26:40):
See, I had pretty specific things that I was looking
for in that game, and one was the running backs.
It's been like that all off season for me. And
the other was just sort of individuals that have been
sprinkled in and if they had the ability that I
think not just make the team, but the contributing factors

(27:02):
to what should be a really good team. You know,
I don't take lightly the fact that Sean Payton discusses
them in a way that you know, I'm sure they
talked about the Yahoo Sports article a lot last year.

Speaker 2 (27:14):
Last week. But when Sean Payton brings.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
The championship level rosters that he's coached and this is
one of them, and blah blah blah, like he's not bluffing.
Sean Payton's a confident guy, always has been that way.
But you can tell he feels a little bit differently

(27:38):
about this team and the way they're constructed. And Sean
Payton only feels that way if you trust his quarterback.
We've seen what it sounds like when he doesn't. You know,
with Bo, almost immediately when he got here, the tenor
surrounding him was much much different than it was obviously

(28:05):
when Russell Wilson was here. And you only have a
few quarterbacks who sort of base that stuff off of
under Sean Payton because he coached du Breeze forever. But
when you have that sort of confidence in a guy
like him, who I don't think he's won for the
bombastic like, I don't think that he's going to say
something he doesn't believe, especially on the positive en, I

(28:28):
could almost see it more.

Speaker 2 (28:32):
That he would lie the other way.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
And nitpick a player before being overly complimentary. So another
texts coming in, Yeah, Bo looked really really bad. So
let me just ask the people, then, do you care

(29:00):
about the result of the first team.

Speaker 2 (29:05):
And the offense for a couple of drives or not?

Speaker 1 (29:10):
Again, I just saw it as something like it would
have made you feel better if they played better. But
I didn't see this as anything overly concerning. I mean
to be fair. There was a couple of plays that
that first team offense went out there, and it was
just a matter of execution.

Speaker 2 (29:32):
You know.

Speaker 1 (29:32):
There was a great throw that bo Nicks had to
Courtland Sutton right on the sideline. He's got a step
on the corner, throws it over the left shoulder on
the left sideline to Courtland Sutton. It's a perfect ball,
It's in a perfect spot and Courtland just dropped it.

Speaker 2 (29:50):
Team makes that catch.

Speaker 1 (29:51):
Maybe that drive turns out something different because I believe
that was third down. They extend the drive. Maybe they
get in the end zone. Do you think differently? But
a drop ball by Sutton on I'll give it to him.
It's a tough catch, but it's one that he's got
to make and he knows that he makes that catch.
Maybe something's completely different. I have no idea. And that's

(30:16):
the little stuff that I think gets ironed out before
week one. That's why I'm not concerned. So I'm not
I'm very much in the camp of don't care. It's
just a it would make you feel better had they
played better. But I think there was a great catch

(30:38):
by Troy Franklin on fourth down. It was a sort
of a throw that was high and hot over the middle.
You got your ribs exposed. It's always a nervous thing
for wideouts when they go over the middle and they
do something like that. I thought he had a great catch.
But if you want to freak out about bow Nicks,

(30:59):
then you should be freaking out in the opposite way
about Jared Stidham. And I don't see anybody doing that,
And that seems inconsistent.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
On your part.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
If you are concerned about a bad couple of drives
or not even bad, I would say an uneventful couple
of drives from the offense. So again, you can always
get in touch with us on the shop Monster text line,
one price, one person, one hour. Happy to be back

(31:32):
in the back in Shanker Studios. Their passion is justice.
Other things I want to talk about. Let's talk about
Shador shall we The conversation today surrounding shador is going
to be a lot of I told you sos from

(31:52):
a lot of different people. I would take the same
approach as I'm taking with bo Nix and everything else.
When it comes to the preseason, do not take too
much from one game. But I will say this about
shador I think what's happened with him and if he

(32:15):
continues to play well in the preseason, could all be
a giant blessing that maybe couldn't have been seen during
the draft process. So we'll get there in just a
couple of minutes Stagram.

Speaker 2 (32:33):
All right, So.

Speaker 1 (32:39):
Shadoor Chadour had a really really good debut. Again I
would be I would caution people, but too much stock in.
But that was his feels different in here's why he
needed to play well. The other guys were discussing bon Nicks.

(33:01):
He doesn't need to play well for anything. He's proven
we know what boon Nicks is. For the most part,
He's not competing for a job. Shadorgh Sanders is competing
to I mean, not just prove people wrong and potentially

(33:22):
compete for his starting position. He's competing like to show
he belongs, which you would have thought college tape wise.

Speaker 2 (33:35):
He belongs in some sort or in some form or
fashion in the league. But for whatever reason, he drops
in the draft.

Speaker 1 (33:44):
And I still don't know, Like, I don't think it's
a purely football thing. You know, the people that were
seeing he takes too many sacks and that's why he
fell in the draft. Well, you saw a little bit
of that in the preseason game. He holds onto the
ball a long time because he's always trying to make
a play, and that can end up being disastrous.

Speaker 2 (34:02):
You know.

Speaker 1 (34:03):
It's something that Sean Payton one thousand percent cannot stand
is when his quarterbacks sitting under the ball too much,
see Russell Wilson.

Speaker 2 (34:16):
The reason why.

Speaker 1 (34:19):
Is because if you go back and I don't have
the numbers on this, I would let's just assume I'm right,
because it feels right to me. The amount of drives
that have a sack involved in them that you would
consider successful have to be minimal. I'd like to have

(34:40):
a successful drive while taking a sack in the middle
of it. It's got to be really difficult to do
because if you take a sack, whether you're at second
and six before the play started, or it's first in
ten or whatever, and you push that to a third
and fifteen or a second and twenty, the odds are

(35:01):
you getting a first down on great. So if that's
the reason, at least partially why he fell in the draft,
then I'd understand it. But I think there was something
else that was happening there. I think maybe they didn't
think he was good enough for a starter, and they
worried that he had maybe a little bit too much

(35:21):
of a confidence bordering on arrogance for a backup quarterback,
or something along those lines. I think that was at
least partially sort of the deal. But I think a
couple of things. Number One, he's not a guy that's
hurting for money, so the money doesn't matter. I think

(35:46):
what happened to him in the draft in the ability
to be humbled perhaps a little bit. You know, when
you've kind of gone your whole life being the man,
you've always been, the starting quarterback, you've always been the
dude that's touted as the best guy on campus, you've
had your number retire in college, perhaps a little dose
of humble pie can do you some good and remind

(36:06):
you to stay grounded and get back to work, and
you got to earn your spot and blah blah blah.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
Maybe that's a good thing.

Speaker 1 (36:14):
I also think what's great is that there had to
be a lot of pressure on him. I would be
surprised if the Cleveland game wasn't. Outside of maybe no,
I would say it's probably gonna be the highest viewed
preseason game of the week, because everybody was curious for
what he's doing, and even if you weren't watching live

(36:34):
bet money, you were going back in and checking the
box score to see how he did, or following along
on Twitter, and with a little bit of pressure on
him that guys don't really feel in a preseason game.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
At least the way that he would have felt.

Speaker 3 (36:48):
It.

Speaker 1 (36:50):
For him to step up to the plate and have
a great game, I thought was really cool, And it's
sort of a testament to who that guy always is
when the pressure. If you remember last year when things
got tight and you needed to make a play happen
at SeeU, he would make a play happen. He's always
kind of been that way. But I kind of liked

(37:10):
the idea that he's fighting. He's fighting a little bit
of adversity. Immediately now, before I took the week off,
we were discussing the uh the comment from their owner
where he's like, Yeah, if it were up to me,
I wouldn't have drafted the guy my GM did. He
drafted him, and I thought that's a weird thing for
an owner to say about a player who's on his team.

(37:35):
And despite all that, Shador goes out there and plays well. Again,
if you had concerns about Shador and him holding onto
the ball too long, you had some of those fears
confirmed in that game, because even on a play that
he wasn't sacked, he did about eight pirouettes and ran

(37:58):
twenty yards backwards to a scape pressure. He kept the
play alive for what ended up being like a nothing play.
But if he gets tripped up around the ankles, it's
like third and thirty and that stuff that I think
will have to be sort of coached out of him.
And maybe that's just part of who his personality is

(38:19):
as a quarterback is I'm always gonna try and make
a play. But bottom line is I thought it was
I thought it was a great debut for him, and
if he can stack, you know, another game or two
like that on top of it, maybe he's got a
legitimate argument as to.

Speaker 2 (38:37):
I don't even know if it's being the starter at
least getting snaps.

Speaker 1 (38:40):
This year, maybe being the number two, maybe being the
guy that they go to if Flaco goes down with
an injury or something.

Speaker 2 (38:50):
He's got a good case. You know. Some other rookies
making debuts this weekend.

Speaker 1 (38:55):
You know, Ashton Genty had three carries for negative one
yards in his debut with the Raiders. Not a lot
to see there, Travis Hunter. It's interesting you go back
and watch highlight packages to see him do both offense
and defense in an actual NFL game setting. It's still

(39:20):
like I want to keep throwing reminders out there that
somebody's actually trying to do this because it's insane. But
he got a decent amount of run on both sides
of the football and a couple of catches for nine yards.
Played a lot of dB.

Speaker 2 (39:39):
In that game, but.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
Even on it was like a five yard catch, but
it was a slant over the middle. He's got a
gear like a turbo booster that he can thrust into.

Speaker 3 (39:53):
That.

Speaker 1 (39:54):
Just not a lot of guys have, you know, the
one that I think is going to be really interesting
to watch. You know, first of all, New York They've
already named Russell Wilson the starter. They did that like
day one, but Jackson Dart went in there and played
pretty well.

Speaker 2 (40:11):
I think that it's like.

Speaker 1 (40:14):
Russell Wilson is on the shortest leash that's ever existed,
just because the mounting pressure of what feels like a
lame duck head coach in GM and Brian Dable, and
I forget that the GM is there. They got another
year in which everybody thought they were going to be fired,

(40:37):
and yet they're trying to shepherd in this year one quarterback,
which I think is always a terrible decision, but he
looked pretty good. And it's gonna take like two straight
Russell Wilson bleep up games for the entire New York
media in fan base to start screaming in the face
of Brian Dable to put in Jackson Dart. But the

(41:01):
one that I find fascinating the Minnesota Vikings drafted JJ
McCarthy last year. McCarthy goes down with that injury in
the preseason. He's gonna miss the year, and so they
play Sam Donald, who has this fantastic year and leads

(41:21):
the Vikings to a fourteen and three record. JJ McCarthy,
by some accounts during Minnesota's camp, has struggled.

Speaker 2 (41:35):
He struggled in his debut with Minnesota.

Speaker 1 (41:41):
And I'm trying to picture what happens if JJ McCarthy
steps in and a team that win fourteen and three
last year was Sam Donald ends up going eight to nine,
because it's just tough for the rookie to figure it
out in year one, especially without having the reps last year, Like,
how do you as a fan base handle that one?

(42:04):
Because that gets incredibly difficult when you have expectations that
are very high and yet you're trying to usher.

Speaker 2 (42:14):
In this sort of new.

Speaker 1 (42:18):
New quarterback figure it out on the fly, drink through
a fire hose thing with a team that's set up
the win That one I think is going to be
an incredibly interesting watch.

Speaker 2 (42:32):
And oh, the.

Speaker 1 (42:35):
Game that just got suspended, they call suspended it's canceled.
Suspended means you're gonna pick it up later. Like the
beginning of the fourth quarter it's Detroit in Atlanta, a
Lions player takes a hit, he leaves on a stretcher
and then they just come out and they go game's over.

Speaker 3 (42:53):
So you.

Speaker 2 (42:56):
I don't think they're going to do that in the
right season. I mean they had I guess a little
bit of that. Well, well they did that with.

Speaker 1 (43:06):
The Bills game with the mar Hamlin, but he died
on the field for at least a short period of time.
In this case, if you guys missed it, it wasn't
even like a crown or the helmet thing. The guy's
head was up. It was like the form tackle that
everybody teaches. He just got caught. Weird that kind of
snapped back a little bit. He was obviously concussed. I

(43:29):
think their issue was there's a report and there's a
camera angle on the reverse side where it looked like
he was having sort of a seizure on the field,
and that's what free people out. I just wonder if
this is going to be a more common occurrence in
the league.

Speaker 2 (43:45):
If an injury like that happens.

Speaker 1 (43:46):
Do they just stop the game. No, it's the preseason,
so nobody really cares. And they did joint practices. That's
the decision that the two head coaches in that game made.
Was what we got our work already, But really weird
situation there.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
Anyway.

Speaker 1 (44:03):
All training camp coverage and Altitude Sports Radio is powered
by Roma's Law, the official injury law firm partner of
Broncos Country.

Speaker 2 (44:11):
A lot more to break down with the Broncos.

Speaker 1 (44:13):
First preseason game of the year. The overall theme it
seems to me, are you do you freak out over
the good and bad when it comes to preseason or
do you just kind of take it as a guide.

(44:33):
We'll get to that in a little bit, both on
offense and defense for the Broncos, two sort of different
perspectives on both of those with preseason game number one.
We'll get to that in just a couple of minutes.
Bos Lombardin came next.
