Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's the rose and thorn of your week?
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Rose in my nose? So good? I did by myself.
Oh Rose. Also, I saw Sinners. Oh my gosh, have
you seen it yet?
Speaker 1 (00:11):
No?
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Oh my god, you need to stop this recording right
now and go see it. I'm being serious. It was
so damn good. Oh my gosh. And being bisexual, it's
such a gift. I loved that movie so much. I
hope you, I hope you enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
This is gonna release mid June, and everyone will be like, Okay,
behind the curve. It just came out.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
It just came out. Today is April twenty third.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Okay, we're ahead of the crowd.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
You heard it.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Her first recovering Gleek presents.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
A clear Buffy podcast. Hi everyone, I'm Lena and I'm
Ian and welcome too a queer Buffy podcast.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Hey.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
I don't know why I said and I'm Ian. Why
did I say it like that?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
I don't know it was it gave a little bit, why.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
I know, Oh, did you say horny or Ornie did?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
It's kind of a it's kind of a Yanny Laurel,
like you can kind of be whatever you wanted it
to be. I said, horny.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
I'm sorry, what experiences are you having that that's how
someone sounds in their horny And I'm ian, what.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
No, you did it kind of and I'm Ian.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Yeah, I went and I'm Ian.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
That's kind of how I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
I was also, I mean you were also horny, is
what you're saying? Yeah, you know, I mean, yes, of course,
of course. Well I heard how you said. I'm Leana,
and I said, whoa, maybe cold shower first, Relax, we're
here to talking about the vampires player. I think you
might be in the wrong space.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Oh sorry, sorry, sorry, I'll chill, I'll chill, chill.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
How are you I'm good, Yeah, I'm fine.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Oh that's fine.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
I'm just a little stressed. My room is literally in
such utter disarray that someone who entered the room would
think I had a mental disorder, and they would be correct.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
I love that, but it's such a mess. And I have,
like I'm not kidding, like five self tapes I have
to get done. Yeah, and I'm also trying to apply
for jobs of a non performing variety. So it's just
a lot going on here. But it will all hopefully,
no not hopefully, it will all lead to great things.
(02:34):
How are you.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
I feel like you and I are in a similar space.
My room is also way messier than I want it
to be. I'm also like trying to apply for jobs
all the time, and I'm but I'm feeling good today.
I honestly woke up and I was feeling good. I
was like, Okay, I feel like today I'm going to
get a lot of stuff done. So I'm feeling good today. Yeah,
(02:59):
but it's day to day, man, Oh my god, and
something has got to give, and something's wanting to give. Yeah,
it will give.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
And something's giving and it's given. Giving is what it's given.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Oh okay, Oh my god. Welcome to Slay you all,
Thank you all for being here. Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
The reason I asked if we could record earlier today
is because on my like when I joined my agency,
you had to fail out like a skill sheet, and
I said on the skill sheet, I said, I know,
like the most basic guitar possible, because I just wanted
him to know I could learn guitar potentially. I know,
like the basic basic basics. And he keeps submitting me
(03:39):
for stuff where they're like, we need someone who's proficient
at guitar and.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Keeping like you have to say no, not proficient.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah, I said no, no, no, no no, But this week
I'm being brave and I'm trying to do it anyway.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Well, you've got like guitar players.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
In your yes, So I'm going to my brother's house.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Yeah, he's a great guitar and Sammy is an amazing guitar.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Play huh on the guitar that they have there, and
I'm gonna get put something together and just hope that
it's not embarrassing. I just hope that it's not embarrassing.
I literally was looking up like easiest songs to play
on the guitar. Yeah, so hey, hey, we're gonna see
if I can fake it. It'll be great, honestly.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
I also, I mean, I know I would say, I'm like,
I'm gonna like a rhythm guitar. I can keep a beat.
I can.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
That's the reason. Is it specifically said rhythm guitar. And
I was like, oh, okay, that's so I can fake that.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
And also, let me tell you, I have played guitar
on stage, and I'm not saying I played well, but
you can kind of fuss with anything and like tune
up the chords. And get a cabo and get the
easiest chords possible, and it will be in the key,
so it's it would probably ben it's.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
The freaky Friday of it all. When Jamie Lee Curtis
tells Lee Low, just act like you're Mick Jagger. That's
that's my plan, Okay. I want to show like I
can put my fingers in the places so it looks
like I'm playing it well, and then I'll just sell
it with my comfy Yes.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
I think that's good.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Oh God, I believe in you. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Oh, I believe in you.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
But we're here today not to fake playing guitar uh
and not to sing how to succeed a fantastic show
that I have been talking to people a lot about recently.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Actually, you talk to me about that a lot. Not recently,
but all the time. You're like, you're perfect for everyone
in that show. And that's true. I am.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
You're perfect for literally every female character.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
So if you are if you are doing that show
and you need a swing to play all three women.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
Or you're doing like a like a very avant garde
like black box minimal set to cast members.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Oh that would be slay. Okay, So like a rose
and I'm everyone else you oh, because that's the thing
is it has to be like the owner of the
company and also the owner's son.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
And also uh huh and Bud and.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
The trade around. I mean J. Pierpont is on the
stage the whole time.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
That's true. Maybe maybe there's maybe there's three. Maybe there's J.
Pierpont and then there's yeah, there's Schmidty Rosemary Hetty and whatever,
the secretary who sings in Brotherhood of Man, and then
there's Bud head of the company mailroom man. And the
secretary is not a toy guy that I can't remember.
(06:30):
So four rolls, four roles. J. Pierpont.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Okay. So if you are making that production, you found
you found your person. It's me and you found me.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
I'd love to play Bud from that would be great.
I want you and I imagine you would be doing
coffee break. Literally that's just the every job we've.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Ever shared together. We were like on the fritz because
we need caffeine. And I'm just kidding.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
I was gonna say I famously don't drink coffee, but
I support where you're going with that does.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Mean like we're always like fucking around.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Truey and hey, that is true. So there we go.
It writes itself, it writes itself. But we are here
to not kill a boy. On the first date. We're
talking about season one, episode five, about the Vampire Slayer. Welcome,
have a seat, buckle up. I hope you're right.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
I am.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
I'm gonna get us started with some Buffy the Vampire Slacks. Yeah,
what do you think?
Speaker 2 (07:29):
I think this is good?
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Okay, good, I agree. I'm glad we're on the same page.
I was a little nervous, okay.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
So yeah, you know, I mean, not agreeable.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Not agreeable at all, always putting up a stink, always
just being contrarian. To be contrarian, I do.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
I'm famously contrarian. I do.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Not to derail the Slacks.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Oh god, I.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Do worry a lot that. That's just me. Sometimes I
have such a strong opinion on things, and I'm like,
is this actually my opinion? Or am I adopting this
opinion because I feel like everyone else feels differently and
I want to be special.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Oh girl, I don't have that at.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
All, And it's not at all at least I don't
think it's with like big things like with like value
system things. It's specifically with media, where if I'm watching
a piece of media that everyone loves, I'll be like, so,
actually this is fucking badly and then I noticed it. Okay,
here's when I really clocked it. And maybe I just
(08:37):
love Buffy the Vampire's Layer. I have been so charmed
by every episode in season one. No, seriously, me too,
even this episode. I was like, so, this is amazing television.
I love this television.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
I agree. I literally was thinking this morning, I was like,
I actually don't think I'm gonna not like any of
these episodes exactly.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
And like watching Glee, which I love Glee, there were
so many times that there would be beloved episode that
I'd be like, so, actually this episode's bad and here's why.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Okay, yes I have noticed you doing that.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
And season one of Buffy is famously like the bad season.
It's famously the season that people are like, if you're
gonna start Buffy, you might as well to start at
season two.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
So I feel like, how much of it is.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
That I'm charmed by season one, and how much of
it is I want to be feel like intellectually superior,
so I actually get season one and the rest of y'all.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Don't that's interesting. I am genuinely charmed.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
I am charmed. I am charm starring Rose mcgallan.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
What you're saying, I do feel like, frankly, I have
the opposite problem. So I think you and I we
bounce each other out, but also sometimes maybe a bad pair. Also, No,
I just feel like sometimes I will like something and
then you'll make a good point, and then I'm easily
swayed into thinking like, now it's bad. Do you know
what I mean? And that's the problem I am genuinely
(09:54):
working on every single day. We're like having my own opinion,
like I don't know, does that make sense? Have you
noticed me doing that?
Speaker 1 (10:01):
I there are times that I know for a fact
that you start to be like, okay, right, it's bad,
and I'm like, no, no, stay there.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
And there are things I will do that on God knows,
but I a you genuinely in these moments, you genuinely
you're making good points, so I'm just like, oh, yeah,
you're right, and then I'm I'm like, oh fuck, I
was wrong. And that's why, genuinely I have really enjoyed,
like letterboxed, I've enjoyed like good Reads, where I can
(10:37):
sit with my own feelings and say and not to
like great things, but to like say, Okay, I enjoyed
this and this and this about it. I didn't like
this and this and this about it before I hear
anyone else's things, so I can like, you know, and
obviously people do make good points all the time, but
that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it. So I'm
(10:59):
I'm genuinely it is a problem I work on every
single day. Yeah, and welcome to my podcast.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Oh yeah, and we're actually working on it here. Now,
do you have a listener what you enjoyed and didn't
enjoy about this episode?
Speaker 4 (11:10):
No?
Speaker 2 (11:10):
I enjoyed everything. Okay, great, I really and honestly. I
turn on the episode and it is a picture of Xander.
So I was like, I'm not gonna like this episode,
but I love that and I loved the Xander stuff
to do. We thought it was funny.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
That's another thing, A famous Xander defender. And I'm like,
am I defending Xander because I like Xander? Or am
I defending Xander because everyone else doesn't like Xander?
Speaker 2 (11:33):
And I I think you should keep that. I think
you should keep that.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
I mean, I will say, as of right now, so
far in the episodes we have watched, I do like Xander.
I don't have an issue with him. Yeah, but as
the show goes on, it is a question we should
be asking ourselves if I could defend.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Yes, never forget, never forget this.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Question with my son. Am I speaking from my heart?
Or am I speaking from my ego?
Speaker 2 (11:56):
And That's how I'm feeling now where you know, and
he is even in this episode, he is so in
his own like toxic masculinity spiral. But I don't think it.
I think it serves a purpose here.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
You know.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
I'm not saying that I enjoy it. God knows. I
don't him like slut shaming Buffy, but I think it
serves a purpose. I don't think it's like actively a
bad thing on this show yet.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Yeah, yeah, so we'll see. Oh yeah, Okay, now let's
get into it and then we can continue this discussion. Okay, okay,
now we're getting into the slacks. Everyone calm down, get
off our backs.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
It's fine. Yeah, oh yeah, it's time.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
This episode Never Kill a Boy in the first Date
was released on March thirty first, nineteen ninety seven. It
is the fifth episode overall end of season one.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Of course, of course only in season one.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
Obviously, how would it not be the fifth episode overall.
So it's written by Robda's Hotel and Dean Batali, who
are writing duo, who go on to write a few
I think about like five or six episodes of Buffy
through seasons one and two, and then weirdly, after season two,
you know, they go on to other projects. They're no
(13:10):
longer writing episodes for the show. But then in two
thousand and nine, which is six full years after the
show ends, they are brought on to write the Nintendo
DS Buffy video game Sacrifice once. So shout out any
(13:32):
Sacrifice heads in the chat.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
How come I didn't have this on my Nintendo.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
Tes I know you're not too late, not too late.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Honestly, I could probably find one on Facebook marketplace for
no I know I have one. It exists somewhere.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Well, yeah, I chewed up all the styluses. Give me break,
I did hear me out. Okay. I went to the
library and I checked out Evan Roskat's book on Buffa
the Empire Slayer. I have to recheck it out because
I'm not finished with it yet and it's too back.
But I also I went on Libby and they had
a bunch of Buffy comics and I have holds on those,
(14:05):
so as soon as those come in, I'm gonna read them.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
See that's me with Angel. Yeah, I've started marathoning Angel
because I'm like, oh, we have imposture? Do I think?
I am? No, I'm seriousy the Vampire Slayer, and I
haven't seen half the cannon so.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Well, I mean that's the thing is the canon is ongoing,
you know.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Yeah, all right, so and part of the canon is
that Sacrifice DS game written by rabdas Hotel and Tea Batali,
and this episode was directed by David Semel, who also
would go on to direct some episodes of Buffy and
cross over to the other half of the canon. He
directed two episodes of Angel, so all the way through
Angel season two, he's working with Buffy in the Buffy verse.
(14:52):
I should say another name, an alternative name for this
episode was The Anointed. I do like the name they
went with more. I agree the Anointed is you know,
like the inciting incident. But the core issue of this episode,
can Buffy go in this date exactly?
Speaker 2 (15:11):
And I think it's also like cheeky because you think
the boy is gonna die the whole time, and when
he doesn't, you're surprised.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
And who doesn't love a pun I love a pun?
So the featured never kiss a boy on the first date, babe?
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Ye? There's the thing people say im purity culture.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Oh no, I'm unaffected by purity culture.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
I know famously, you and I untouched by purities culture.
It's crazy.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Yeah, that doesn't affect me literally every day, And I've
never I don't feel yucky and gross for just like
having a feeling.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
I've never had to talk to professionals about it. No, no,
So the band that's featured in this episode.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
What's playing at the Bronze, Hey, I want to make
a jingle. I want to make a jingle for what's
playing at the who's playing?
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Will?
Speaker 2 (16:02):
I will do it?
Speaker 1 (16:03):
So now it's probably retroactively already been in past episodes,
but we are just saying I'm hearing about it for
the first time.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Now, I'll right it, I'll write it. You're you're so
good at the garage band guitars that I'm like, oh funk,
what am I gonna do?
Speaker 1 (16:16):
Well?
Speaker 2 (16:17):
If you come up with a jingle melody.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Yeah, then I can write a backtrack and we can
get the whole thing. If you just have like this
is what I want it to sound like. I can
beep and boop boo.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Well, I mean it's already done.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
Yeah, Well, obviously we've already done it. We've heard it
in the last few episodes. So here's the play of
the bronze. Let's play the jingle. It's velvet chair is
so embarrassing.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
If I don't do it, I'm gonna do it.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
There's nothing you're holding yourself accountable you have.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
To do exactly. There is nothing that holds me more
accountable than embarrassment.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
And I'm being serious. Oh absolutely, it's Velvet Chain. Velvet
Chain was a band. They were formed in nineteen ninety
three in Los Angeles by Jeff Stacy and Erica Motto,
who our real life husband and wife Shout Out Love.
Their music is featured, obviously in this episode of Buffy
the Vampire Slayer. It also is featured in an episode
(17:14):
of Sex in the City in nine o two, one
to zero and an MTV's road Rules. They were They
were an ongoing band. They were producing studio albums. I
think they have five albums in total, and they were
I know, they're cool. They describe themselves as space Jazzy.
I like went on their website as really in the
velvet Chain.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Oh my gosh, in the velvet chain, y'all.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Here's where things turn tragic. Oh no, So they have
five studio albums I believe, and they were working on
a new album in twenty twenty until Jeff tragically passed.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Yeah, but that's velvet chain. Not to end on a down.
Sorry about that, Jeff. That's really tough. Erica did say
she was maybe going to try and finish the album
on her own, So it's anyone's so some facts about
this episode. Owen, you know him, you know him. His
(18:11):
original name of the script was Chambers.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Honestly, Chambers would have been so funny.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
It's a little too here's but the gag with Owen, it's.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
The artsy guy name. I feel as though.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
Yes, and I think that's the problem is the the
the reveal with Owen is like, oh, he's actually insane. Yeah,
and so if his name was Chambers, I would say
something's not right with that boy. From the jump, But yeah,
that's a boy exactly, and so the more you find
out about him, you're like, this is antie. It is
(18:46):
literally the whole episode, I kept being like, something's fishy
here when he would be like pretty girls are so
frivolous and I was like, okay, so he's annoying. And
then he was like I really love how Emily Dickinson
is obsessed with and I was like, that's suspicious. He
wanted to go to the funeral home immediately, that's suspicious.
And then at the end I was like, oh, that
(19:06):
was all intentional. He's literally crazy.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
I just thought he was like a poetic weirdo.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
This is Chambers behavior. This is not Owen behavior. I
think that's why he has to be Owen is for
the reveal that took me out.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
That was funny. No, Seriously, if he was named Chambers,
we would know he was insane. No.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
I think part of the fun of the episode is
like he is so boy next door. And then as
the episode goes on, you're like, you are literally need
to be locked.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Up, Like when can we almost get killed again?
Speaker 1 (19:42):
Yeah? He's like, when can we pick a fight in
a dark alley with a gang? Is literally what he
proposes Chambers behavior.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Okay, so, oh my god, I have to remember that.
We have to say that for more stuff. Chambers behavior.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Oh my god, episode character lives on because we refer
to any time someone is acting recklessly as Chambers' behavior.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Oh my god, that is such a funny thing to say.
Ian ow what that really tickled me.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
I'm so sorry, and behavior jingled Lena.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Oh my god, it's really funny.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
So there was a deleted scene in this episode of
Buffy and Owen on a date to a bowling alley
where they meet a mysterious guy who Buffy mistakes for
a vampire. I don't know anything more than that, but
I do know that the mysterious guy was played by
an actor named Paul Felix Montes, and he is still
listed in the credits as mysterious guy even though he
(20:49):
doesn't appear in the episode anymore. And are Oh no,
I have two more slacks. Our penultimate slackt is Jeff Mead,
who plays Andrew Borba aka the vampire.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
It is liquid.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
He returns, the actor returns. I think Buffy used to
do this a lot, where they would bring back actors
who they already had a face mold for and'd be like, great,
We're just gonna make you a new mask. He comes
back in the season six premiere as mag Madge Mag,
one of the one of the biker demons. If you
(21:29):
remember that spoiler, and I thought this could be fun.
I think this could be a fun addition to the
Slacks and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On Buffy Wiki, they
list what the episode was called in different languages, and
a lot of times the translation is just never kiss
a boy on the first date, or like something different,
(21:50):
that's just kind of innocuous. But occasionally the translation is
either like really interesting or just funny. So here are
my picks for the best the best international titles of
this episode. In German, the episode is called Without Buffy
(22:10):
you Live Longer, Okay, I love lude, rude, damn it's true. Though,
it's true, it's true, not that you're gonna get eaten
by a vampire. And in Hungarian the episode is titled.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
Screwed Date screwed dates.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Yeah, straight to the point, Hey, straight to the point.
They said, nothing cheeky here the dates screwed. The date
is a bad date the end, and if you go
on the date.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
You're screwed because you're going to miss the Anointed One exactly.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
He got out free. Oh my god, Hailey Joel Osmond
Haley on screen debut of Hailey Joel Osmond in this episode,
it's not Hailey Joel osmin No.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
I didn't think so, you really it looks like him
a lot. It does, especially on I was like, oh
my god, it's the sixth sense. Sixth sense kid, And
I was like, no, it's not you like that.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
I know that's the Anointed One because he can see
dead people.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
I mean, he has very Halegial Osmond.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
Features big time. Well those are your slacks. That's a rap.
You got a recamp?
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Are you sure do? Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer,
Yearning for a normal life, Buffy agrees to go on
a date with the mysterious and bookish Owen. Meanwhile, Giles
discovers a prophecy of incoming danger, which could interfere with
her dating plans, but Buffy chooses Owen over battling over
battling with the forces of darkness, despite everyone begging her
(23:42):
to go slaying, even that hot weird guy Angel. However,
when Giles is trapped by a group of vampires. Buffy
must figure out a way to balance dating and slaying.
The Master has been talking about the Anointed One, and
there's this guy on a bus spouting nonsense, and that
bus has then taken away by vampires. Spouting nonsense. Guy
(24:03):
is now a vampire and he Buffy and Owen have
a big tussle and they assume that that nonsense guy
is the anointed One. But what we learned later is
that the Anointed One is actually the little boy from
the bus we saw earlier. What the hop hell happened there? Master,
you fucking weirdo. Weird weirdo. Owen has a wonderful night
out with Buffy because it was so dangerous and he
(24:24):
is so boring and weird. But Buffy realizes that she
can't protect him from the dangers that he can't help
but throw himself in, and Buffy breaks things off with him,
and good for her, And that's what you missed on
Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Trying to balance dating and slaying is like a story
of my life.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
No, me too, me too? I love you single day.
I'm like, how do I how do I prioritize slaying?
How do I prioritize dating and how do I how
do I find the balance?
Speaker 1 (24:57):
I don't know exactly. It's like it's the triangle, you know,
the triangle where's like you get to pick two and
it's like, oh yeah, a big paycheck dating slang, which
one I love when Buffy goes into the cafeteria and
Sanna goes Buffy howse slang last night? I just it's
(25:18):
I mean, we are the ten thousandth person to make
this joke. But the way that Slay has left ballroom
culture and entered modern vernacular, like mainstream vernacular, makes the
show just full of jokes. I know, it's full of awesome. Yeah,
it's really fun. Anytime anyone I would love that. Anytime
(25:39):
anyone refers to a slang, I'm.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Like, it's awesome, It's really awesome. Oh my gosh, it
is really awesome.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
All right.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
I really enjoyed this episode. I was prepared not.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
I was charmed by it. I can't help it. I
was charmed. And here's the deal. I was looking up
stuff about this episode. I was, you know, because Buffy
wiki is so dry, especially.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
With nothing like Lee wiki I Love you girl.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
That I was going to multiple sources to like find
other stuff. Yes, and a lot of them were talking
about where this episode ranks, because you know, a bunch
of different websites are doing due like every episode ranked
worst to best. Yeah, and it is. There are one
hundred and forty four episodes of Buffy and in every
ranking this is between like one hundred and five and
(26:28):
one hundred and twenty. So like, this episode that I
really enjoyed is.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Still That's how good this damn show is.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
We're in for a good ride for a tree, We're
in for a treat.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
And that's the thing is, I've watched I do a
lot of skipping around in season one. I obviously I
love the ending of it, but I have said this
in the past. The feeling I have felt before is
that they really want you to root for Xander and Buffy,
and that's not something i'll You can't make me know,
(27:00):
you can't make me do that. So I do a
lot of skipping around in this season in my regular
day toity watches, and I have felt an over and
obviously we're only five episodes in, but I'm like, shit,
why the fuck am I doing that? I love this.
I think this episode is full of awesome character development
for Buffy. I think I think, honestly, Willow and Xander
(27:23):
are funny as hell in this episode. I think, yeah,
I am having a really good I think Giles trying
to slay by himself really charmed me. I think this
episode is lovely.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
I love this episode the Giles and Buffy relationship. I
think this is the strongest episode for their relationship so far.
I do want to shout out. I think Xander, a
character who the show tries too hard to make funny.
I do think has my favorite joke of the episode,
which is when they are trying to get Buffy to
(27:56):
go to the funeral home. Yeah, and they pitch, let's
go a double date and Owen goes, you want to
go as double and Zender goes because if you know
the fun it's stupid.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
No, it's really I love that part so much, like
them like furiously hanging on to each other, being like
Buffy lets go.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
So what I love about this episode? Oh, there are
many things I love about this episode, but at its core,
it is what I am calling a Spider Man crisis
because I feel and you know, I wasn't alive and
Spider Man premiered In fact, I don't think anyone listening
(28:41):
to this podcast was what are you seventy years old?
But so to my knowledge, spider Man is kind of
like the first mainstream pop culture thing to tackle ordinary person.
I guess like Superman's the same thing, so never mind,
but like ordinary person with it, Ken has a job
with extraordinary identity, And there are all these plot lines
(29:03):
of like Spider Man has to go defeat the Rhino,
but he has a chemistry test that day, exactly, And
I love ship like exactly find a phone book serio.
I love like person is trying to hold on to
(29:23):
their normal life but they have to keep the plates
spinning for their extraordinary superhero stuff. Yes, and I mean
there's a reason it's done all the time now, like that,
it's It's Handah Montana, It's Wizards of Waverley plays like
it's done a lot now, but it's because it's so
compelling and so fun to watch. So exactly, episode where
(29:47):
the boy Buffy has a huge crush on has finally
asked her on a date, but it's the exact same
night that a vampiric prophecy is about to come to pass.
I buckled up I'm ready. I love that.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
I also love this so much that moment where you know,
Buffy misses out on going out with Owen and then
Cordelia comes in and swoops in and takes him and
she's like fuck, I will like I must be so worthless,
Like why don't boys want to like go out with me?
The one boy who did want to go out with me?
(30:21):
Like da da da da. You know, just that feeling,
especially in terms of dating. I felt. I feel like
I felt this all the time growing up, where if
I wasn't actively dating, I was nothing, and I like,
you know, so then when things came up, and especially
when things came up and they didn't even like come
to fruition like I thought they would, I'm like, okay,
(30:42):
so I'm just wasting my fucking time. Then I'm doubling
down on things that keep me from huge things. You know,
I told like this feeling. I I keep telling the
story because I love it. Time management is a nightmare.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
And I think that why this is much more Spy
mandlemma than a Superman dilemma is Clark Kin's a full
adult man with a full adult job, and he has
the confidence and the feet on the ground of an
adult who is like, well, I'll just reschedule exactly when
you are Peter Parker age, when you're a Buffy Summer's age.
It is not like boy, I liked, ask me out,
(31:20):
I'll reschedule. It is he owing to us as an audience.
Is so obviously into Buffy, but she is unsure of
herself fifteen sixteen year old girl who feels like she's
a crazy monster, and so she is like, well, if
I reschedule, he's not gonna want to go out with
me again. Yes, he clearly like like is going to
(31:43):
fall for Cordelia. She's all over him.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
Uh huh.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
I think her being so young is imperative to Oh
why this is such a compelling dilemma.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
I agree because also, like I'm an adult now and
like things that don't fit in my schedule. I'm like, okay, whatever,
you know, I do feel this feeling, but it's also
like it's gonna be fine, you know. I don't feel
that that like sense of urgency like I did when
I was a teenager anymore. God, I love I honestly
I loved this.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
Yeah, and I love the Buffy and Giles relationship dynamic
in this episode a.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
Lot I do too, And I honestly I see like
Giles is so I love first of all, you know me,
I love a strong out British person, Like he is
stressed as hell, and like you know, he he has
like his generational stress on him too, Like we learned
(32:46):
that his dad was a slayer and then his grandma
was a watcher. Excuse me, Like, so he like comes
from this legacy and he knows that genuinely the world
is at stake and he just like can't understand why
Buffy like it keeps like running away from her responsibility.
(33:08):
But I also I think he holds that empathy for
her as well, where he's like, you're he does such
a good job at holding both of those things, Like
he's like, Okay, well you can go on the state
and I'll go slate in your stead. But you know,
oh my god, that's what.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
Makes Giles, that's what makes this episode really special to me.
Is I think a weaker character or a weaker show
would have it be. Giles is just the stern, drill
sergeant who's like, no, Buffy, you have to do this.
But he, as you said, has so much empathy for her.
(33:48):
And at the end of the episode, the conversation they
have where Buffy frankly did kind of step in it.
There was this huge prophecy. She knew there was this
huge prophecy. She blew it off. She almost got Owen killed.
And Giles does not come looking to reprimand her at all.
(34:08):
He tells her he levels with her and says, I
know a lot about what you're going through. I had
dreams of having a normal life too. I also wanted
to be a normal person, and I had to give
it up because being a Watcher is my family's legacy.
It's what I'm supposed to do. And then he says
(34:29):
to her, and I think you're doing a pretty good
job of being the Slayer. It's such a lovely moment.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
And even like opening this episode with her slang in
him being like this isn't good enough to them, that
conversation in the end it made me laugh. I love it.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
I'm such a child, you can't say slang. I can't
take it seriously episode with her slang and him.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
Saying this isn't slay enough.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
But I agree, I agree, I agree on dry I.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Think that arc is so nice and I don't know,
I just think that Childs is such a you know.
And like Buffy is correcting this herself. She understands that
Owen is not a person she can bring into this circle.
She understands that Xander and Willow have way clearer heads
(35:24):
about it. They can keep themselves safe. She doesn't have
to worry about them as much. She's so worried about them.
But with someone like, what's like Owen? What was this.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
Someone was what did I say? Chamber tendencies? Yeah, chamber behavior.
Chambers someone who's exhibiting chambers behavior.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
That's the yes. They are going to They're not going
to keep a clear head and as dangerous as situations
as they are in every single day. And Buffy understands,
and she is responsible enough to be like, no matter
how I feel about this guy, no matter how I
feel about myself in dating, this isn't right and that yeah, Buffy,
(36:01):
I love you.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
That also was a bit of a twist ending for me,
because the obvious ending is Owen is like, Hey, that
date was insane. I don't know what was going on.
This isn't gonna work out, And then Buffy's like, ah,
how could any guy ever like me? So to have
it be that she's the one who calls things off
(36:24):
and she still is really interested in him and really
likes him, but sees he's not gonna be careful about
stuff and if we keep dating, he's gonna get killed.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
Yeah. Honestly, the I feel like their real life equivalent
and even like other media equivalent. It was giving like
you know guys who start dating girls because they're boring
and they need excitement, like man Clacy dream girl yes, yeah,
oh yes, yeah, where they're like not even seeing you
for who you are, They're just seeing you for the
(36:55):
excitement they bring into your life. They're just seeing you
for like the character development of themselves. And then Buffy's like,
oh shit, but I'm so like she's so much more
than the Slayer, Like she wants someone who's gonna like
her for her and not like the excitement they can
bring into her she can bring into their live. You know,
it was giving that to me.
Speaker 1 (37:14):
And Buffy is so her core want. It's such a
corny way to say it, Like her core want is
to be a normal girl. Yeah, and so then to
have someone who, oh no, what he's really excited about
is everything not normal about me? Like she wants to
view herself so much as I'm Buffy and I happen
(37:35):
to be the Slayer, and he is very attracted to
the slayer who happens to be Buffy exactly.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
He does get it.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
He wants to pick a fight with the biker. Literally
he is which he's supposed to be. He's crazy.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
The whole episode he kept saying non sequitary is that.
I was like, excuse.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
You, No, this guy is weird.
Speaker 1 (37:56):
What is going on here? Girl?
Speaker 2 (38:00):
Never trust a man who loves Emily Dickinson that much.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
Amen, Just kidding.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
I love Emily Dickinson.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
Yeah, you're allowed to. You're a queer woman a word.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
She wrote that ship for me because she is me exactly.
Speaker 1 (38:14):
Okay, she's talking about porkin.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
Beans man, and this is such a fun red herring.
I thought I wasn't gonna like it, but I did.
Oh my god. The red herring is like, you know,
they're following this guy around all day and it turns
out they missed it. Like Giles was just in the
wrong place at the wrong time. This is just a
random vampire who is spouting nonsense.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
Yeah, there's a there. The prophecy says, that five people
are going to die, and out of the five people
will rise the anointed one. And there is a bus
crash that five people were on the bus and one
of the people on the bus was a wanted murderer
or at least was being questioned about a murder. Yes,
so all signs point to well, this is the anointed One.
We spent the whole so chasing him. He does turn
(39:02):
into a vampire, and then at the end psych he
was just a regular vampire. He lea jo Osmond. Little
boy with a plane is the amounted one. Little boy
with a plane. Gosh, that's so fucked up. God, this guy.
Speaker 2 (39:16):
They did such a bang up fucking job at riding nonsense.
I have been on so many trains in my life
for people that talking like this is my favorite.
Speaker 1 (39:27):
On the Planet's just like this is this is the
MTA experience, serious.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
Vaguely religious nonsense, and it's like, oh my gosh, what
are you talking about? And you kind of listen for
a second and you're like okay, okay, okay, and then
they go poor Cambines and you're like, okay, I'm lost,
and I love that.
Speaker 1 (39:47):
I'm out. I'm out. I've had so many trains. I
remember one time a guy yelling at all of us
that we were all robots and we were all going
to get a hell and I was like, yeah, I'm
just trying to go home. I'm just trying to get
home tonight.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
Yeah. They did such a good job at capturing that that.
I just I really loved it. And it is liquid liquid, Okay,
I could probably find it. But it's like it's when
he's standing up on the bus and he's like, I
(40:19):
wish I could tell you all. I should have like
wrote them down. I was too busy giggling. Uh. He's
like standing up on the bus and he's getting in
people's faces and he's saying something and then the bus
driver asks him to sit down.
Speaker 1 (40:32):
It's like just before that, okay, and.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
He's saying something that makes sort of sense, and then
he says it is a liquid and I'm like, okay,
that doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
So I actually I don't follow anymore, so you've lost me.
Follow anywhere, Follow anywhere.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
And I love that moment too, when he wakes up
and it's uh, it's Sander and Willow and Owen and
he's saying things that make sort of sense, and then
they run away and then he goes pork and beans,
pork and beans, So they're missing that he's not saying anything.
This doesn't mean he'sy anointed at all.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
You are making such a good case right now. I
want to say, I want to give you your props.
You're making such a good case. I was so lost.
I was love, like what porn be possibly mean? But
you're so right, he's nothing. It is literally pointing out
like he's saying all of this. I'm literally I'm just
gonna circular listen.
Speaker 2 (41:25):
This is also I love to circular listen.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
It is pointing out that, yes, he's saying a lot
of stuff about how he is special and he has
been judged and he has been chosen, but he's also
saying fucking pork and beans, like he's just talking out
of his ass.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
He is not the anointing one. And like, also, that
could be about anything, And it's such a fun red
herring where you see this and you're like, Okay, he's
saying stuff that sounds vaguely like things I've heard in
the past, like past with you know, annointings, the prophecies
and anointings. You know, me I'm I'm I'm well versed
an annointings, but you know, like so it could make sense.
(42:01):
But then he says something that you're like, Okay, this
doesn't make any sense anymore. He's lost me. And it
is so fucking fun and they do such a good job.
I have heard this in my life where someone is
like preaching on the subway. They're preaching on the street,
and they're saying things that make sense with things I've heard,
but also are vague and also nothing, and I love it.
Speaker 1 (42:24):
Yeah, I love to hear it.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
It's awesome.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
He also was giving video game NPC.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I was thinking
the same thing.
Speaker 1 (42:32):
When he walks in. He walks into the morgue, you Jeffy,
and he goes, they told me about you while I
was sleeping. And then Giles pulls out the crucifix and
he goes, oh, why does he hurt me? I was like,
this is this is the prerecorded dialogue that they brought
the voice actor in for an afternoon and they because
he probably couldn't talk, They're like, we need you to
(42:54):
just say some random shit for when the player attacks.
You say like, oh, say, why do you hurt me
say they told me about you. It was very much
giving that.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
Yeah, yeah, it is liquid. God, I loved it. It's
so fun.
Speaker 1 (43:09):
Pork and Beans, pork and Beans. We keep having these
one off vampires that I'm like, Mark and Pung and
the Master bring them back. No, seriously, I'd rather see
pork and Beans and mister Scissorhand from last week team up.
You know, they were fun. The Master, they were fun whatever.
Speaker 2 (43:28):
Oh my gosh, honestly such fun. I really thought he
was really fun. And also the fight in the Mark
I thought was really fun. I loved like the moment
where Buffy like kicks the table and it hits them
in the face and the fires behind her, and then
they put it in the opening titlesh. I loved it.
(43:49):
Very fun and I loved I don't know, just Also,
the balance of this is very exciting. Buffy actively trying
to keep Owen from finding out she's a slayer actively
slaying like.
Speaker 1 (44:01):
Very fine, and both shut up. I'm sorry, no every
time you say it.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
This hasn't made our problem in the past. Also, her
outfit is so cute for real, honestly, such good Buffy.
I love this Alpha. It's like the gold dress with
the light pink overcoat and hair, the massive boots, and
we get the Okay, I love this outfit and that
(44:27):
when I saw it, I was like, oh, I know
where I know what's happening next, and it's if the apocalypse.
Speaker 1 (44:32):
Comes beat me classically classic line.
Speaker 2 (44:38):
God, do you know how pager works? I don't.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
It beeps, no, I can't.
Speaker 2 (44:44):
We solved it.
Speaker 1 (44:45):
I solved it. I don't. I know. It buzzes and
then it has like a I think a little box.
I'm so sorry to everyone who like wasn't three years
old in the nineties listening right now. And it has
a little box that like says who it's from.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
I know what it's for. We're like doctors will have it.
It's like, okay, you need to phone in so he
can give you more information. But this one like she
got like no info on her pager, like you could
get a message like can you get a short message
on a Patriot?
Speaker 1 (45:17):
I don't know?
Speaker 2 (45:18):
Oh my god, you know? And I love the I
love them was like this because it makes me feel young.
Speaker 1 (45:26):
I see I feel the opposite. I hate moments like
this because I'm like people listening think we don't know
what we're talking about.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
Okay, they don't know what a patre is. Well, I'm
saying I'm trying.
Speaker 1 (45:37):
A Glee was a much Frankly, for the Glee audience,
we were old, people were younger, but most of the
Buffy audience is older than us, and I don't want
them to be like these two little idiots.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Okay, we don't need to.
Speaker 1 (45:54):
Okay, I would rather I interrupted you by laughing at
Buffy Sleigh. I want you to keep talking about Buffy
is trying to hide the fact that she's a sligher
from Owen while actively yes slaying.
Speaker 2 (46:07):
Okay, thank you for reminding me where I was. It's
just such a fun like even like Willow and Xander too,
are like so in on this, and I love when
they feel like empowered to help her and they're like,
you know, they're like silently communicating with each other. I
just think this is such a good group. They are
such good friends to her. I love them and them
(46:31):
like trying to keep him in, like him running down
the hall because he hears danger and he's exhibiting chambers
of behavior. Oh my god, I just think it's so
fun and even like she is beating this guy up
and then her assuming he's dead. Like this whole sequence
is just I was riveted, just such fun. First I
(46:52):
was scared for him to find out, and then I
was scared he was dead, and I learn he wasn't dead,
and Buffy's kicking fucking ass.
Speaker 1 (46:58):
Oh my god, such I'm not talking about Porkin Beans's
short life. Is a vampire.
Speaker 2 (47:05):
Sure, the short and amazing life of Porkin means I mean,
he's maybe a murderer.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
So potentially, but like his human self is a murderer.
His vampire herself, he didn't get one killing potentially the
most pathetic life of a vampire ever.
Speaker 2 (47:21):
No, it was serious.
Speaker 1 (47:22):
He gets sired, is spouting nonsense the whole time that
he is a vampire spouting nonsense. He walks into the morgue,
hits Owen like hits Owen on the head so lightly
that Owen is unconscious for five seconds, and immediately takes
(47:45):
the w and is like he's dead. He's barely unconscious
right away. I know.
Speaker 2 (47:52):
It's also like Buffy is so funny. She takes it
at face value. She's like, oh my god, he is dead,
and Buffy, you know he's not.
Speaker 1 (47:58):
Because she didn't hear him say pork and beans and
it is liquid. So she's like, he's got a good
head on his shoulders.
Speaker 2 (48:03):
Yeah, and he's the anointed one.
Speaker 1 (48:05):
Yes, and he's the Anointed one. Little he lightly grazed
Owen's head essentially, just like smacked him on the back
of the head and was like he's dead. And then
my favorite bit of all about this loser's life is
Buffy does not kill him. He dies on accident because
he jumps at Buffy misses and falls into the fireplace.
Speaker 2 (48:30):
It's awesome this guy brd alert. Oh my, oh my gosh.
He really was making me laugh.
Speaker 1 (48:47):
We got mysterious angel in this episode, and he's being mysterious.
Really I forgot in these early days. Yeah, god, he
was on that set. He was probably called one day, yeah,
one day a week and they were like just look
tortured and mysterious.
Speaker 2 (49:05):
And I love it.
Speaker 1 (49:06):
That's all he's doing. To the point. I love when
he comes into the Bronze and talks to Buff and
he's like, oh my gosh, have you heard of this
annoints a bunet sound super serious, and then she's talking
to Owen trying to say like I promise, I'm not flaking.
I want to be on the state with you, but
I have to go. And Angel is just out of
(49:28):
focus in the background, unashamedly eavesdropping on the two of them,
just looking tortured. Yeah, obsessed.
Speaker 2 (49:36):
It's like in it, like that shot is so delish,
Oh my god. And then they kiss and he's like good, yeah,
I love it. Also, Bronze is a coffee shop. Confirmed.
He brings her a muffin on a plate. Yes, why
are they selling that at a club? Could you imagine
someone's walking around with a muffin and a plate.
Speaker 1 (49:58):
As a club. That's a club.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
I want to That's Chambers behavior.
Speaker 1 (50:04):
Now, that's anti Chambers behavior. Anti cha Chambers behavior is
going to a coffee shop and being like, do you
have any cocaine? That ms behavior behavior.
Speaker 2 (50:18):
Okay, I'm still understanding what Chambers and Owen is, so
forgive me Chambers.
Speaker 1 (50:23):
It is a spectrum. Chambers is like the most milk
toasted vanilla guy you've ever met. And Chambers behavior is
the guy who's like, let's go on the roof and
see how far we can jump without hurting ourselves.
Speaker 2 (50:37):
Oh my god, Chambers, I can't live like this.
Speaker 1 (50:40):
Yeah, it's crazy.
Speaker 2 (50:41):
Yeah, yeah, that's true. It would be going to a
coffee shop and looking for for coke.
Speaker 1 (50:49):
Yeah. Absolutely, that's Chambers behavior behavior.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
Go read Emily Dickinson and relax. What do you need
coke for? It's a weirdo.
Speaker 1 (50:58):
Yeah, it's like the It's like the kid at your
high school who like wore a big trench coat in
the middle of summer and had like huge hair and
wore eyeliner and you were like, your parents are literally accountants.
Speaker 2 (51:15):
Like that, and I was so hot. What are you doing?
Speaker 1 (51:18):
Yeah, and it's one and twenty degrees take that off?
Speaker 2 (51:24):
Oh my god, totally like yeah, like where wear a
black flag shirt a T shirt? Yeah, cut the sleeves off,
you'll get the coat off. I'm sure you're in pain.
Speaker 1 (51:36):
Goodness crazy Yeah yeah, Angel still mysterious. He's still brooding. Hey,
shout out. This episode was charming. This episode was fun.
I am enjoying season one so much more as an adult,
and I think I maybe said this last week. I
think it's because I am finally clued in on the
fact that the B movie is on purpose. As a kid,
(51:57):
I was like, this is so corny and cheap and
I'm like, yeah, that's the fun of it. That's so
corny and cheap.
Speaker 2 (52:03):
And honestly, I'm feeling a similar way with so much stuff,
like understanding that like things that might be grading to me,
like personally are still like worthwhile to the story. I'm like, Okay, Like,
do I hate that Xander is watching Buffy through through
a mirror? Yes? Actually I do hate that. I can't
(52:24):
justify that, Xander, what the fuck when is.
Speaker 1 (52:26):
He watching you through? I'm not just believing Yeah, no,
I can't just find it now when she's changing.
Speaker 2 (52:32):
No, I hate that. I can't justfy that. But I
do feel as though it is adding to the story
of Xander. Not that I think that we could lose that,
but him like saying things to like put her down.
I'm not saying I'm justifying it. I'm not saying I
like it, but I am saying it's adding to the
story of this guy is obsessed with this girl and
(52:54):
she like can't even hear the words he is saying,
like yeah, you know what I mean. So I'm like,
it is adding to the story, and it is gonna I.
Speaker 1 (53:03):
Once again, and maybe I'm just being contrion I'm very
pro every Xander thing that's happened so far, I don't think.
Speaker 2 (53:13):
Sans the mirror, but of course.
Speaker 1 (53:15):
I like Sands the mirror also level with me right now, Uh,
when you were a hormonal teen, oh my god? Never
did you never try and sneak a peek?
Speaker 2 (53:26):
You don't even have to? Oh my god? Yet?
Speaker 1 (53:28):
Were you never liked, especially as a queer hormonal team?
Were you not in a dressing room and you try
to sneak a peek? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (53:36):
Oh I was. No. I think about this one moment
that I can tell you off Mike every day. I
feel such shame, but I'm I was trying to sneak
a peak. Yeah. I'm not saying it's good.
Speaker 1 (53:46):
I'm not saying like raw Roxander, but I'm also saying,
like he who is without sin cast the first stone.
He's fifteen, and a girl he thinks is super hot
is changing behind him. I can't say that I didn't
do the same thing.
Speaker 2 (54:02):
You're right, it's not appropriate, don't know, but but it
is what it is. I do understand that.
Speaker 1 (54:09):
Oh my god, I like I think it's just a
very And once again I'm talking about what we've seen
so far. I think It's a very universal experience to
be like, I have such a huge crush on this
person and they don't know, and they aren't exhibiting signs
(54:29):
that they feel the same way. But also they're not
not exhibiting signs, and so like Xander trying to sabotage
her date Zamber trying to say, oh, I think if
you go out with him, people won't like you, and
him saying to oh, and like, oh, Buffy doesn't really
like to be touched. Is all like immature and he
(54:50):
shouldn't be doing that, but also like he's fifteen, he's immature,
and I think it's like silly and fun. Yeah, yeah,
And I like I I have both the experience of
Buffy walking into the Bronze and seeing Owen dance with
Cordelia and her immediately being like, oh my gosh, he
hates me. I'm stupid, I'm an idiot. How I've I
(55:11):
been so blind and leaving and the experience of Xander
finding out that Buffy is going on a date with
someone else and being like this makes me want to
go home and cry are both things that everyone has
felt at some point.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
I'm also like, being actively rude to your friend who
you have a crush on.
Speaker 1 (55:28):
Yes, Like, I totally get that, one hundred percent, Like
you're being such an asshole, but it's because.
Speaker 2 (55:34):
Then were that were romantically charged.
Speaker 1 (55:37):
Yes, yes, is yes, So I'm very on board. I
think it's compelling. I think it's interesting.
Speaker 2 (55:42):
Hey, I'm leveling with you. I think that's I think
that's a good thought. And I am feeling that now,
at least not to the extent that you've told me.
But I will start watching it from that perspective. But
I do feel as though this is serving a purpose
in the story, and I'm not as boo. I don't
want this on my TV show that I have been
(56:03):
in the past, because I do understand that they're telling
me a story. I don't have to agree quote unquote
with everything that they say.
Speaker 1 (56:11):
And I think it's an interesting enough dynamic. And also,
like I agree, buff is the coolest girl in the world.
Of course everyone's gonna fall on her. I love you, Buffy,
it's only it's a human nature. It can't be human nature.
Speaker 2 (56:28):
And like she is so and honestly I get where
Xander is coming from too, like he sees this girl
a she's beautiful. B she's new in town. See. She
also is an incredibly capable, smart, like slaying young lady
like she is, she is a really lovely person. Hayesander,
(56:48):
I totally.
Speaker 1 (56:49):
Get it and with you on this.
Speaker 2 (56:51):
If I went to Sonny Dell High, I would be
obsessed with this girl. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (56:55):
Yeah, I should have brought this up earlier. But I
actually know I can tie this in because I have
a few thoughts about this. I want to go about
maybe you forgot about this guy, but I'm gonna remind you.
You remember someone called Owen. We're gonna talk about again, Yeah, forgettable.
(57:18):
He wasn't in this episode much. Specifically, I want to
talk about Owen's perspective of what the Buffy and Giles
relationship is.
Speaker 2 (57:28):
Oh my god, can you imagine? I was so scared when, oh,
when Giles was in the like Morgue, I was like, Owen,
don't walk in, Owen, don't walk in. Owen, don't walk in.
I'm so scared he like.
Speaker 1 (57:45):
I mean, mostly because Giles is just like the most
non threatening man of the world. I don't think he
would get any vibes that like anything, no like predatory
was going on, but it would be like what's the
deal here? You walk into the library and those girls
(58:05):
just like paling around with the librarian, like sitting on
the table to the point the librarian is like what
do you want when you walk in? And then she
then she fully like talks down to the librarian, is like, well,
this is something called a library where people come in
to get books. Then you go to her house that
(58:26):
night to pick up for a day and he's there.
Librarian is at the house, which I love how they
sell that one where Buffy's like, oh yeah, I'll get
that light book back to you, and no one goes. Man,
you really take your job seriously.
Speaker 2 (58:40):
And even Giles is like, you're not going to get
away with it this time. It's like, oh my god, Giles,
I cannot imagine. I mean I in high school, I
remember like teachers who had like like you know, special relationships. Yes, yeah,
of course, and there was like, oh you know that
(59:00):
always happens, like no, But also like being at their
house is crazy. It's when you hear that like your
friend was invited to their wedding and you're like, are
you kidding? Like what's going on? It's like where my parents,
our parents are neighbors, and it's like, okay, so what
the hell is going on here?
Speaker 1 (59:20):
I'm sure there were times that someone like came into
a teacher's room to ask for something during lunch, and
me and a friend of mine were hanging out in
there and just like paling around with the teacher. It
is something else entirely that you then go to your
friend's house and the teacher is there, and then your
friend is like, we've got to go to the funeral home.
(59:42):
It's going to be crazy. And you go to the
funeral home and the teacher is there as well.
Speaker 2 (59:47):
Oh my gosh, I cannot this.
Speaker 1 (59:51):
Is crazy wild.
Speaker 2 (59:53):
They do a good job at hiding it, but also
not that good.
Speaker 1 (59:56):
Owen was probably like mister Giles Fellow Chambers. I had
no idea. I don't feel secret, okay, okay, It like.
Speaker 2 (01:00:04):
Would have been easier to be like, he's my dad,
you know, like their relationship is so funny.
Speaker 1 (01:00:09):
Seriously, he's my dad. Please don't tell anyone.
Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
Please don't tell. We're keeping in a secret.
Speaker 1 (01:00:14):
We don't want people to think he's joining me favoritism.
That That was the library cover story of all cover stories,
The librarian is my dad. But it's a secret. I
don't want the other kids. I think I'm a loser.
That's that's Yeah, that's a lot of camp rock. I've
been telling everyone that my dad runs hot tunes China.
(01:00:36):
You can't tell them that he's actually the librarian.
Speaker 2 (01:00:38):
Yeah, but it's a lot of camp rock. I believe
we haven't covered camp rock on the Patreo. That is
in my mind. I convinced myself that we have done
it because.
Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
We should should that My final Owen thought is it
should have been an immediate red flag to Buffy that
something was off about this man. When he was like,
I'll even let you borrow my watch, and this high
school student pulled out a roll out pocket watch. It
was a part oh my god, get the pocket watch.
It had the little lamp to snap shut. What I know,
(01:01:08):
never dress a team with a pocket watch. He's the
kind of kid that would wear a top hat to assemblies.
That's Owen. I went to highso I know who this
kid is.
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:01:20):
I literally add an assembly wearing a top hat, standing
up as everyone's filing in in the bleachers, but standing
up because he wants everyone to notice that he has
a top hat on. That's Owen.
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
Honestly, I love it. Where did he get the top hat?
Speaker 1 (01:01:36):
Probably a costume store. There was a costume store like
ten minutes from my high school.
Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
We honestly hear me out when we were going to
high school. They were trying to make funny hats happen,
so kind of ahead of the curve.
Speaker 1 (01:01:48):
That's true. The early twenty ten's, it was a funny
hat time.
Speaker 2 (01:01:52):
Oh I had I think I had like two Fedoras,
and I'm not kidding. I couldn't make it work because
I don't have a good hat head. But it is true.
Speaker 1 (01:01:59):
That was Jason Mora's epidemic. Everyone, I think I should
do that. Yeah, the doors were having a big moment
in high school and they looked good on five of
the population. Oh my god, I think we should bring
it back. Let's let's make silly hats the thing again.
Speaker 2 (01:02:19):
Oh I thought you meant with the podcast. You're like,
let's get back on track.
Speaker 1 (01:02:23):
Oh no, the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:02:26):
No, let's make sally hats the thing. I like have,
especially like the older I get, the more I'm scared
of getting skin cancer. So I'm like, I should be
wearing hats more frequently. And I have a bunch of has.
Speaker 1 (01:02:37):
Yes, and then also you have a heart full of whimsies.
If you're gonnaware how it should be a little silly.
Speaker 2 (01:02:42):
Oh and I'm telling you my hats are really silly.
Speaker 1 (01:02:44):
Good.
Speaker 2 (01:02:46):
I have one that fits in my purse and you like,
unfold it and it's green hound's tooth. It's awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:02:54):
Oh hell yeah. It has a little clasper.
Speaker 2 (01:02:57):
Under my chin. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:03:00):
Pretty.
Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
Still the hats back, Westley, hat are you going to wear?
Speaker 1 (01:03:03):
I don't. My head is so big. I've never met
a hat I liked. I famously I had to wear
when I was in Matilda. I had to wear a
top hat and when I would take it off, I
would have an indentation across my forehead. My head is
so huge. So I've always been an enemy of hats.
Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
Yeah, I hear you. A. I'm trying to throw a
party this year for what. I don't know, maybe my birthday,
maybe something that's coming up. But I really I love
those like medieval princess hats, like the cone one, you
know what I'm talking about? Oh my god, with like
the fabric on the back. I need to wear that hat.
(01:03:44):
I don't know for what. If you've got a birthday
coming up. You want me to make some hats for you?
Let me know. I'm literally begging anyone to throw a
princess hat party with me. Oh my god, people don't
want if people don't have a heart full of whimsy
like I do.
Speaker 1 (01:03:58):
I know I've been saying that. Do you have anything
else to say about never kill a boy in the
first date?
Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
I love this episode. I thought it was awesome. I
really I thought it was. Really It's just it's such good.
You know, this feeling that Buffy has of trying so
desperately to be a normal girl, Like, it's not going
to be solved anytime soon, and so I appreciate her
(01:04:29):
struggling with it. I appreciate her overcoming these feelings that
she's having and also understanding her responsibility a little more.
I just like, I just love her. I really, I
really appreciate this episode. I think it was such great
Buffy character development. I think it was lovely. Yeah, and
(01:04:50):
if this is one of the worst episodes, I think
we're in for a treat.
Speaker 1 (01:04:54):
Woe gears are having fun and Lena, would you ever
kill a boy in the first date?
Speaker 2 (01:04:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:05:00):
Yeah, would you?
Speaker 2 (01:05:02):
Yeah? This can't hold up in court. I would never
kill a boy on the first date.
Speaker 1 (01:05:09):
Not even in self defense. What if he was trying
to kill you. We don't have to go there.
Speaker 2 (01:05:13):
It was like Jesus Christ, but not. Let's worst part,
best worst part. I feel like I'm saying this every episode.
I feel like I don't have one. I feel like I.
Speaker 1 (01:05:29):
Don't I didn't write one down, but I'll think of one.
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
I mean, I don't like that it is not appropriate
to sneak a peek at your friends. You and I
am saying it's younger me every day. I know I
lied and said I wasn't affected by purity culture. I
feel like every sexual feeling I've ever had is gross
and wrong, and I do feel like that one was wrong.
And there is a moment that I look back on
and I'm like, that was not appropriate. Peak is inappropriate?
(01:05:59):
You are correct, and I am saying it to be
younger me all the time. So I don't think it's
appropriate for you to sneak a peek at your friends. However,
I have been a hormonal scene and it's tough out
here and you have to learn how to harness your
your your powers are good. Yeah, seriously, not gross or
wrong for having those feelings. But you still have to
(01:06:21):
treat your friends like people anyway. So I don't love that.
I would probably say that's my worst part, but I
also it's not. Yeah, I really like this episode.
Speaker 1 (01:06:32):
It's fine.
Speaker 2 (01:06:32):
I think it's awesome. I think Ohen and silly. I
think Giles is awesome. I just think I love Buffy.
Oh my god, So no, I don't have one. Sorry,
it's yours.
Speaker 1 (01:06:48):
I like, frankly, don't really have one either. It's just
charming and nice and fun and goodness, god forbid, we
have something charming and nice and fun.
Speaker 2 (01:06:56):
In this world.
Speaker 1 (01:06:58):
Salty goodness, Oh, salty goodness. Here's the worst part. And
I'm literally pulling this out of my ass. I love
that Cordelia has a posse. I love the Cordets. Yeah,
I wish that there was some narrative through line. We
were introduced to harmony Kendall why.
Speaker 2 (01:07:20):
Indeed, that's probably it's probably the thing of a she
should come back. But b I'm just thinking about what
I know about television, and she's probably too high build for.
Speaker 1 (01:07:30):
Them to use. And is I don't like it. Most
of the Cordets don't speak, so they're probably extras exactly,
because if you give someone a line of dialogue, you
have to pay them more. So I think Mercedes McNab
is not going to come on an episode where she
doesn't talk and then they're like, well, we'd rather just
get an extra and be fine. But I love to
(01:07:52):
know who a mean girl's posse is mean too, And
I love even if they have no personality.
Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
What's her name? What?
Speaker 1 (01:07:59):
What? Well? I love some of my favorite I love
an Hbic but more than an HBIC or I guess equally.
I love an Hbic who has a sycophantic follower, yes,
and then has another follower who's trying to stage a mutiny.
It's the it's the Heather syndrome. I love it. I
love a Duke who's looking to take over. And I
(01:08:21):
love a mac namara who's like I just want to
be liked, yep, who's like I actually, I'm so glad
to have friends. Yes, give me a Gretchen Wieners, give
me a Karen. Neither of them are trying to stage
the mutiny. Katie is trying to stage the mutiny, but like I.
Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
Just but also like you know, Duke and also, Karen
are would be would be are thrilled for the downfall
of the Regina George.
Speaker 1 (01:08:44):
Yeah, I just I think those are such interesting dynamics.
Give me a harmony, Kendall, instead of nameless cordet.
Speaker 2 (01:08:51):
Yeah, or at least quartet cordet court at cordet, or
at least give them like any sort of like they're
just standing there.
Speaker 1 (01:09:01):
Yeah, give them a note.
Speaker 2 (01:09:03):
This is a note.
Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
This one's really sassy. And this one is literally so airheaded.
She doesn't even know where she is right now. She's
just staring into space as Cordy talks to her. That's
my god.
Speaker 2 (01:09:12):
I love that.
Speaker 1 (01:09:13):
That's me, That is not you, all right sometimes best part.
Speaker 2 (01:09:19):
Best part if the apocalypse comes beat me. I love
that line, and I also think it encapsulates such a
fun like this. This show is such a beautiful time
capsule of the nineties. I love that entire like monologue
that she has to Giles, where she's like, this is
the nineties. I can be as many things as I
want to be. Like I ab out said Roy Kent,
(01:09:44):
and then I about said Troy Bolton. I'm talking about
Clark Kent, Jesus Christ. Clark Kent has a job. I
just want to go on a date where she's like,
I want to find the balance in my life. I
can be the slayer and I can be someone's girlfriend,
and I can be YadA YadA. It like she just
yearns for to have multitudes, you know, and this thing
(01:10:05):
takes up so much time and effort, and she is
leveling with this person and she's like, listen, I will
save the day, but you have to give me the
space to do what I want. And I just love
that whole monologue and just this whole episode I just
think is so oh, like, how do you balance slighing
(01:10:28):
and dating? I don't know, is a tough balance. I
hope she finds it. Buffy.
Speaker 1 (01:10:33):
I love you, Buffy. What's your best part? My best
part is the Buffy Giles relationship. It's so interesting coming
from Glee, which is a show that is trying to
create the same relationship.
Speaker 2 (01:10:47):
Yeah, and oh my god, I think that.
Speaker 1 (01:10:50):
Glee gets it right at times, But a lot of Glee,
the teacher relationships, teacher student relationships are so muddled and
confusing and weird, and the Giles and Buffy relationship is
so well thought out.
Speaker 2 (01:11:05):
It is like it's amazing.
Speaker 1 (01:11:07):
How they feel about each other is so clear. It
never feels creepy, it never feels uncomfortable. It is always
like strictly paternal and they respect each other and he
wants what's best free for her, but then also they clash,
and I love the ending of this episode being him
relating with her and then saying, I think you're doing
(01:11:28):
a good job.
Speaker 2 (01:11:29):
Yeah, oh my god. All I've ever wanted it from
a parental figure is for them to tell me that
they're proud of me and also level with me. Oh
my god.
Speaker 1 (01:11:38):
It's really nice. And that's also like.
Speaker 2 (01:11:41):
I do.
Speaker 1 (01:11:42):
And it sucked because so much of us talking about
Glee was talking about like teachers shouldn't be doing this
with their students, and like I hated having to do
that because also I did have really close personal relationship
with teachers in high school. Yeah, and they did not
feel creepy and weird. They felt lovely and nice. And
(01:12:03):
so it's great to have a show where it's like
Buffy's hanging out with her teacher and it's.
Speaker 2 (01:12:08):
Not weird at all. Yeah, it's actually yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:12:13):
There actually is an appropriate way for teachers to like
have close relationships with their students.
Speaker 2 (01:12:18):
I agree, I had, you know, I had my theater teacher.
Shout out to mister Ruminsky. He was such an amazing
teacher to me. I feel like there were so many
moments too, where he was the teacher who could level
with me kind of like the science teacher and treat
me like a person and not just whatever I was,
(01:12:40):
you know, trying to portray to the world, and also
cared deeply about me. And also I cared about him,
and it never was weird ever, And I did go
to his wedding and it was awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:12:51):
Hell yeah, she snuck a peek and she went to
a teacher's wedding. Not those are separate and teased. To
be clear, I was that sounded to stop. Turn, you
need to stop. I'll put the shovel down. I'll stop
digging this hole. Now let's go to the death count
(01:13:11):
ding ding ding ding ding ding. Okay, in this episode,
first and foremost, mister vampire who had the ring, who
had the Order of Aurelius ring, which I want to say,
we call the Order of Aurelius last.
Speaker 2 (01:13:27):
Honest mistake, honest mistake.
Speaker 1 (01:13:31):
And we please forgive us, We own it that we
mispronounced it.
Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
Giles said it, and he told us how to.
Speaker 1 (01:13:36):
Do it, right, Thank you, Giles. And then five on
the bus.
Speaker 2 (01:13:40):
Bring But okay, that's a good question. Okay, So if
they become vampires, do we still count it as death because.
Speaker 1 (01:13:49):
Yes, no, we do. Okay, they die once when they
become a vampire, because they get die they're sired, and
then when the vampire gets killed, it's another death.
Speaker 2 (01:13:58):
Okay, okay, so they potentially get two on our accounts.
Kind of exciting for y'all.
Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
Yeah, Well, I mean we counted Jesse twice, did we
did we?
Speaker 4 (01:14:10):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:14:10):
We?
Speaker 1 (01:14:12):
I guess I didn't count Jesse twice. Well, I guess
I'll add vampire Jesse then okay.
Speaker 2 (01:14:17):
Then okay, so now we know we counted twice. Yes, okay,
so the five people on the bus and we didn't
see them die.
Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
Again, Yeah, it's just pork and beans.
Speaker 2 (01:14:26):
So does that mean pork and beans gets twice on here?
Speaker 1 (01:14:29):
Yes, pork and beans gets twice.
Speaker 2 (01:14:30):
Understood, understood, So it's.
Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
It's a seven kill count, which brings a grand total
now that episode two has more deaths than we previously
thought to twenty twenty twenty deaths twenty deaths. I mean
Jesse died off screen, but that counts, yeah, because he
died during the episode and it was a major pop poy.
I'm counting it.
Speaker 2 (01:14:51):
And Giles didn't kill those two vampires, so we assume
that they're.
Speaker 1 (01:14:55):
Still often running. Yeah we never he said he hidden
there until they left, Okay, okay, which also theoretically, if
you had a crucifix, could you just like hold the
criticks out everywhere and you would be safe.
Speaker 2 (01:15:07):
Well, that's that's what I do. Anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:15:09):

Speaker 2 (01:17:48):
Us and tell your friends.
Speaker 1 (01:17:49):
Please. Okay, here's my pitch for you. Okay, is Kim
possible Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Speaker 2 (01:17:57):
That's such a good question.
Speaker 1 (01:17:59):
I see. It was specifically if the apocalypse comes, beat me,
and I went, I've heard kimpossible before.
Speaker 2 (01:18:05):
They call me beat me if you want to reach me.
Speaker 1 (01:18:07):
I think it's very ronstoppable as a very zanderesque character,
No totally. Bonnie is very Cordy coded, and it's very
like Monster of the Week. She's facing Spiderman dilemma. These
monsters are affecting her regular teenage life. My question was kimpossible, though,
is Buffy is like kind of an outsider because no
(01:18:28):
one knows she's a slayer. Those kids at that school
knew that she was like a secret agent and no
one cared.
Speaker 2 (01:18:34):
Also, why is she a secret agent? The older I get,
the more I'm like this, this is child labor.
Speaker 1 (01:18:41):
The canon answer in the show is she had she
was a babysitter. She started a website to fund to
like promote her babysitting business. And in the website she
said like whatever you need. And so someone saw that
and contacted her, being like I need you to save
the world basically, and she was like, well, I need
(01:19:04):
the cash. And that's how she became a secret agent.
Speaker 2 (01:19:08):
And she has secret slayer powers.
Speaker 1 (01:19:10):
I mean she called cheerleading canonically because she's a cheerleader.
Speaker 2 (01:19:15):
Because she's a cheerleader. God, I haven't watched that show
and such.
Speaker 1 (01:19:18):
Rocks and it is like little kids.
Speaker 2 (01:19:23):
Yeah, no, totally totally. Did you love her game where
you had to like jump up and grab your mom
mad misses? Oh my god?
Speaker 1 (01:19:31):
That you know what was the Wow? This is a
whole tangent. We'll end here. The Dies dot com game.
Do you know how to say the ultimate substacker. Yes,
but like Stitch's cousin. Yes, we were six to five.
Your experiments six to five had a stack sandwiches. That
(01:19:52):
game that changed the world.
