visit right now with a filmmaker, the writer and director
of a movie that's going to be playing tonight in
Sioux Falls, Toby Jones, and we're going to have a

(00:23):
Fargo based film in the theater tonight in Sioux Falls
at the State Theater, seven pm tonight. It's called AJ
Goes to the Dog Park. And we've got Toby on
the line right now. Toby, tell me a little more
about AJ Goes to the Dog Park.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
This is a micro budget, surreal, absurd comedy and we're
bringing it to Sue Falls for our first ever screen
there tonight at seven o'clock and we are really excited
about it.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
So, Toby, you are listed here as the writer and
the director, So let's talk about AJ Goes to the
Dog Park. Is this based on something that happened in
your real life? Or where did the story come from
for this film?

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Oh, it's very much based on real life. Yeah, I
spent the last fifteen years. I grew up in Fargo,
nor Dakota. I spent the last fifteen years in an
LA working in animation industry where I still lived today,
working on cartoons like Regular Show. And after doing that
for a long period of time, I started to think
a lot about my friends from Fargo who I keep
in touch with, and how fun it would be to

(01:18):
get together, to get the old band back together who
I used to make like local access shows within Fargo
when I was growing up, get everybody back together and
make a surreal and absurd comedy kind of based on
a kind of weird dreamlike variation on our own lives.
So Aj is the main character. He is playing himself,
He's playing a version of himself, and the dogs in
the movie are his real dogs. And so we kind

(01:40):
of took a starting point of my real friend AJ
and his life and kind of blew it up into
the wildest, kind of weirdest movie we could think of.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Well, tonight is the night we get to see it
at the State Theater in Sioux Falls. But when did
you start on this project? And you called it a
micro budget, so I'm assuming that it takes a little
longer when you don't have a huge budget. But how
long did it take to make this film?

Speaker 2 (01:59):
That's a great question because you mentioned on micro budget.
That's very true. We only we paid out of pocket.
You know, we had no external funds, just us, friends
and family coming together to make it. And so when
you don't have money, what you do have is time.
And so I wrote this thing on the side kind
of as like almost like a pandemic project, just kind
of like a creative release for fun. Over the course
of a year, I would just sit down, you know,

(02:21):
when I had time, and just add a scene or
two and just try to make myself laugh in that
moment and have a spontaneous kind of feeling that I
hope communicates to the final project. And then I got
the core team together, and you know, no everybody has
day jobs, and so all the I would come to
visit for a few months at a time over the
course of three years, and we would just knock out
scenes on nights and weekends, and so writing it took

(02:42):
about a year. Shooting it took about two and a
half three years, and then post production took another maybe
nine months before the whole thing was done, so conceived
in twenty twenty nine, completed in twenty twenty four, So
twenty twenty nine, twenty.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Nineteen, Toby. Most of the people who are going to
hear this interview are probably never going to make a
movie of their own. But for those who do the
say hey, I want to do this, this is probably
what they would do as well. They would have a
passion project where they don't have a giant budget to
actually make their film.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Well, I mean, yeah, you're going to work with resources
of what's around you, you know. And my opinion as
someone who watches a lot of movies is that I
would rather watch something that comes from a personal place
where people are pulling things together with what they have
then most big budget, blockbuster movies, you know. And so
I hope that people kind of get that feeling watching
the movie where it's like, you know, everybody has people,

(03:27):
places and things around them that you don't normally get
to see in the movie. And so that was kind
of starting point for me, which is just like, what
are the things in my life that in my surroundings
and the people in places that I know not only
get to see in a movie. Because then at least
even you know, if nothing else, then you create something
that is kind of an original piece.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
I'm excited to see this film. Several movies that I
would say our favorite movies of mine are like this,
where they didn't have a huge budget. It was a
group of people that were passionate about making a movie
and they just did it. And for some reason, I
just love that kind of film.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
You know what, I fully agree with you. You're you're
picking up on it exactly. You know, this is a
movie that is not pretending to be a movie with
money behind it or a big budget movie.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
It's not.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
It's not even speaking necessarily the same language as a
big budget movie. We're kind of doing our own thing
and we try our best to just have fun doing
it and hope that it communicates to fun for the
audience and stuff as many weird jokes in there as
we could.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Tonight is the night if you'd like to see it
at the State Theater downtown Sioux Falls. AJ goes to
the dog park, Toby, what time does everything start? Tonight?

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Screening is at seven o'clock And yeah, I'd be happy.
I love people come out and see it if they're
in the mood for something like this, and please do
if you come, stay for the Q and A, because
we do have at least one very strange surprise plan
that you're only going to be able to get in
these live in these live shows.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
And locals can come see it tonight. But for people
who are listening from far far away on the internet,
is there a place where they'll be able to see
this film eventually as well?

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, we're playing a bunch of different screenings we're doing.
We're doing a Midwestern tour, so the cast and crew
is going to going through the Midwest, doing about seven
or eight shows there. But we're also playing a variety
of screenings around the country, starting on the on the
on the twenty fifth, so we're playing La, New York, Austin,
and a bunch of other places. I'd recommend looking up
on the on the Music Box website and finding all

(05:12):
those shows, and then after that you can look forward
to digital, vod H and Blu Ray.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
I love it. I am going to throw a link
to make it easy to find the event tonight. Again.
It is tonight at seven pm at the State Theater
downtown Sioux Falls. Again, that's the local one that's happening tonight.
But I'm also going to throw a link to the
trailer so folks can find it online as well. Toby,
thank you so much for your time today. We appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Man, Thank you.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
AJ goes to the dog Park. It's at the State
Theater tonight at seven pm. I've got a link to
