today with Drew Nickens. He and several other very funny
comics will be in the area at the end of
the month. On the thirty first of July, He's going
(00:24):
to be at Titans Tavern and Tea. He and several
other guys from the Kill Tony Podcast gonna be there
the thirty first of July. I'm excited for the show.
Drew and I get to open for you on the
MC that night. It's gonna be fun.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, it's gonna be a fun time. I've never been
to South Dakota, so I'm excited to see what fun
stuff y'all have.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
I know you do stuff with a kill Tony podcast.
So are you originally from Texas or where are you
from originally?
Speaker 1 (00:49):
I'm from Washington State.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
So are you based in Austin now or how in
the world did you end up doing all the stuff
with the kill Tony Podcast.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
I live in Austin. I was living in for a
little bit. I really enjoyed it there, and then comedy
kind of took me to Austin cause I got on
Kill Tony. I did well enough where they wanted me
to move there so I could be there more often
and out there. It's pretty great.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
And they Kill Tony podcast has a live stuity audience,
which would be fun to be in front of them,
but there's also a bunch of people who watch the
videos and listen to it online. What's it like to
be a part of that.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
It's super cool, man, Like, like there's so many really
nice people you're gonna meet and recognize you and stuff
like that, and like you don't really realize how big
it is until you're in an arena full of twenty
eight thousand people and you're like, oh, that's not even
like ten percent of the audience we usually have online,
Like it doesn't really hit you sometimes, but it's really
(01:44):
it's really cool, man. I enjoy it a lot. I
enjoy the people are you going to work with? The
people are gonna meet that, And I'm just gonna be
on stage and do what I love. So I love
it so much. It's it's it's a blessing.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
So how long have you been doing stand comedy, Drew?
And what made you decide to get on stage and
do this?
Speaker 1 (02:03):
So it's almost been about eight years now, I know.
I just like, I'm a people person and I've done
public speaking when I was in the Air Force, and
so I was like, you know what, I watched the
show and it got me to be like, hey, let's
let's try this out. And then I've tried it out
(02:24):
once and fell in love. It was incredible.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Now, when you're doing the Kill Tony podcast, there's a
live studio audience and then again a bunch of people
that watch it online. But how many people are in
the audience there, I don't. I guess I've never really
seen the audience side. I just see the stage side.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
It's about three hundred and fifty. It's it's incredible, man,
There's no atmosphere like it. Like it's just it's just
magic in a bottle. And like when you walk out
and people are cheering it, the roar is like nothing else.
It's incredible. It just it's it's it's amazing. It's it'll
(02:59):
it'll you'll yearn for that, and it's kind of like
chasing the dragon. The more you do it, the more
you're like, I love this and and like it's just
the mana. It's one of my favorite places in the
world in general. The mothership, the staff, the stage, the crowd,
it's all amazing stuff. What they have going over there
is special. I love it.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
And you've been on several episodes, but it all started
with one appearance, one opportunity. What was that opportunity?
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Like, oh, okay, so first show. I had been signing
up driving from Austin to Dallas every week for ten
and a half months, which is a six hour round
trip of driving. And then I got on and my
first minute was okay, but my interview was great, and
then Tony was like, hey, I think you should do
you have another minute and like his producer, and I
(03:50):
said yeah and it and then they had me on
and they had me do four more minutes. So I
did four minutes in one episode, and then I did
a appearance. Is the one episode is pretty incredible.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
And something people need to realize. If you're not a comic,
you're like, boy, what would I say for a whole minute?
But if you're a comic, You're like, how in the
world do I say any of my stuff down into
just one minute? Because a minute's not a lot of
time when you're trying to actually do a setup and a
punch line and everything.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Making material fit a minute is so hard because in
you're a comic and you're you're doing by writing sets
and stuff. You're not shooting for a minute. You're shooting
for whatever makes the joke cohesive. So you can't actually
do uh, what's it called? You can't just do a minute, like,
(04:42):
so when you're creating a minute, you have to really
think about it. How many punches does it have? How
many am I? Is there like a dead point in
there where I got to add something? Like? It's so complicated,
but it makes you so much more strong on once
you've been doing it long enough to But once you
start creating longer sets and longer jokes, you now can
(05:07):
have a formula to what makes a joke a joke,
you know, so it makes you stronger. But it's so
difficult because jokes aren't just supposed to be a minute, and.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
A lot of the time a comic is not working
on a minute, they're working on either like a half
hour set for a special or an hour for a special,
So to get it all boiled down in one minute
takes a lot of effort, So kudos to you for
not only doing that once but multiple times.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Yes, sir, thank you so much. It's so interesting to
have this type of journey, know what's going to happen,
and then like the interview. A lot of people sleep
on how important the interview is during kill Tony because
that's where you get to show your other comedic stops.
How does suck spot things of that ature.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
So July thirty, first, you're going to be at the
Titans Tavern and tea several other comics from the kill
Tony podcast as well. Do you guys work together often
or is this the first time you've all work together?
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Yeah? Yeah, So we're all like this little cohesive unit together.
I don't want to say family because it's not in
all of garden, but we're like a very tight cohesive unit. So,
like we all kind of work with each other, whether
it's all over the country or just stuff locally, and
we all kind of see each other around often. So
(06:22):
it's like really cool to be able to do a
show like this in South Dakota together because, like Jolly's
my boy, Enrique is one of my good boys, you know,
Like all the people that are gonna be on the
show are like some of my really really good friends.
So I'm excited to see what happens next.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
So how does that work? Are you carpooling here from
Texas or you guys all get in here separately because
you have other places to go afterwards.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Yeah, yeah, we all have our own places. I'm flying
after I did not want to drive the South Dakota
from Austin. That sounds terrible.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, that does sound pretty terrible. But we are super
excited for a fun show. First, it's at Titans Tavern
in t South Dakota. You can find all of the
information online. I'll share that here in just a bit,
so you get your tickets and we're excited to see
you there again. Drew Nickens, our guest today, Drew excited
to work with you on the thirty first, my friend.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
Yeah, it's gonna be a lot of fun. And what
delicacy is South Dakota and known for? What should I try?
Speaker 2 (07:19):
You got to try a thing called chis lick and
unless one of the other comics told you about it.
You've probably never heard of it before.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
No, what is chis lick.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
It's little pieces of meat that are deep fat fried
and then season two perfection it is delicioso.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Okay, okay, So is it like Philly cheese steak with
out of the bread.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
No, it's more like steak tips. A lot of the
time around here it's beef. Like original chis lick would
have been lamb, but around here most places, it's beef
and it's really really good. You got to try it.
The good news is Titans Tavern, where you're gonna be
doing the show on the thirty first, they have chislick
on the menu and their chis lick is really really good.
So you're in luck. They have it right there.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Okay, so I have to try chislick. I'm excited for it. Yeah,
I'll taste test on stage. It'll be fun.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
That sounds good. I'm excited to see you on July
thirty first. Thanks for your time, man.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
Yes, sir, excited to be there. You guys, get some tickets.
It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be pack. Some of
the best comics across the nation than me. We're gonna
