a guest joining me in the studio. I have Corey
Peterson joining me, and I've known Corey the last year
and a half, maybe two years, and gotten to know
(00:22):
him a little bit here. You might know the name
because he was in the news the last few days
here in Sioux Falls. Two different TV stations did stories
about Corey Peterson. He is the Minijaha County Republican Party chairman.
Now here's the thing that's really weird to me that
they didn't do interviews with Corey. They just did stories
about him, and they didn't even attempt to reach out
to you. That's weird to me.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Nope, I haven't heard from anybody.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Now.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
We're not known for breaking news around here. We do
have Facebook dot com slash Sioux Falls News, but again,
most of the stuff that we do is not like
breaking news by any means. But let's talk about why
you were in the news. What transpired that made you
the focal point of a couple of different local news stories.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Okay, well, there's there's a little bit of contention on
the Minnihaha County Republican Board.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
And that's not new. This has been going on a while, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
That's that's not new. I was elected as the chairman
back in January of this year.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
So you inherited some of the contention. Yeah, I did.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
And some of the people that are not exactly happy
that I'm the chairman. I beat out one of their
friends for the position and then they were running with
that friend and they they got their position. Still, so
there's it's a it's a pre split board, but it's
happens on board. You gotta knuckle down and work together.
(01:41):
But yeah, this is this is kind of brute over.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
And then there was a meeting that was called, but
it wasn't really called correctly, wasn't It's correct.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
The minie Haja Republican bylaws are very specific and how
you need to call a meeting, how to do it properly,
to make sure that everybody is notified certain number of days,
got it notify everybody that's in the Central Committee, which
is over one hundred and forty people in Minnehaha County,
a couple of board members. They have every right to
call special meetings. As the chairman, it's in the bylaws
(02:10):
that we're supposed to work together on trying to do this.
But I'd been reached out to from some of the
county Central Committee members that they're here and something's going on,
but they don't they didn't get any kind of a
notification of a special meeting. After contacting more Central Committee members,
got to the number of over eighteen Central Committee members
(02:31):
did not get the notification. Now, our by laws are
very clear that it everybody has to be notified in writing,
which we are allowed to use email, but they need
to be notified. So after I got that high and
the number of people that did not get the notification,
I decided that this was an improperly called meeting and
(02:51):
and so I called it an improperly called meeting, and
so no county business could be done at that meeting.
And that's when they can and you'd to have the meeting,
which I fully expected.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Which is how many people were at the meeting.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I've heard around twenty five twenty six people.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
And there's over one hundred and forty that should have
been notified and could have been at the meeting, and
you know the ones that you reached out to, eighteen
that didn't get notified, So we could probably assume there
was quite a few more that were not notified. If
there's over one hundred and forty and only twenty six,
twenty seven whatever people showed.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Up, right, So that's why I decided that the meeting
was improper. So this group still got together and they
had a meeting. Also, in the meeting, and in any
kind of an organization, whether it's a business, whether it's
a political party, you have bylaws. Yeah, the bylaws are
what actually gives your organization life to be able to
(03:42):
do things.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Well.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
In this meeting, they suspend the county by laws just
in favor of Roberts rules.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
That seems odd.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, you can't do it. You can't suspend your bylaws.
That is your parent document for everything you do, and
Roberts Rules is just an add on to help you
for areas that bylaws don't address. Yes, okay, that's fine.
You can't suspend those. It just can't happen because that's
what actually gives you life. So another thing that's a
problem with that meeting. And in that meeting, they held
(04:14):
a vote to remove me as the chairman because they're
not happy with my leadership or they're not happy with
the fact that I had to censure one of their
friends for inappropriate comments and bullying basically on Facebook. When
we first got onto the board, I introduced a code
of conduct to all the board members and said, hey,
(04:36):
this is a document that we are going to uphold.
I am not going to tolerate people going after other
Republicans on social media. We don't need it. It's not productive.
It's time to move on. Too much of that stuff
has happened in today's politics, So that really started the problems.
So anyways, fast forward, they had this meeting, They had
(04:58):
this vote which I I haven't seen any documentation but
this vote, and again it's all improper. They voted to
remove me, and apparently it passed. The very next day,
they took those meeting minutes that were not approved from
an improper meeting, so it's documents that don't even exist technically,
and they took them to the bank that we have
(05:21):
our Minihiha County Republican funds in they presented them to
the bank. They convinced the bank that they had removed
me from the chairmanship. How I found this out was
just through an email that I can no longer access
the account. I got a hold of the banker and
the banker told me, well, yeah, we've been informed that
you're no longer the chairman and you have been removed
from the account.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
And I'm like, that's how you found out?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
That is how I found out.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Wow. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
And also in the South Dakota bylaws, there is no
way to not only remove the chairman, but there is
no means to remove any elected board member. So they're
breaking bylaws. Yeah, they took improper documents to attempt to
take over a bank account. So at that point, our
(06:06):
governing body basically who we report to because support the
state board because we get our charter from them, and
with that charter at kind of we have to abide
by the rules of our bylaws. I got them involved,
and well now we saw that was in the news. Yeah,
the last couple of days, because the state came in
did a little bit of an investigation and just basically
(06:29):
said no, you guys, you can't do this.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
That was improper. Again, the weird thing the bank.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Imagine if I just, you know, type something up on
my computer, I walked in and said, hey, take Bezos
off that Amazon account put me on there, Like if
that's what if you can do that somebody find out
where they're banking.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
No, I think that seems really really weird.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
And I the reason I wanted to have you come
in is because again I've gotten to know over the
last few years. Your name's in the news, and when
I talked to you and you said that they didn't
even call you. And now I'm finding out that you
found out that you were removed by getting an email
from the bank. I'm like, how weird is all of this?
Corey Peterson has been our guest. If somebody would like
to reach out to you, if they're going, hey, I
have questions or I have ideas, here's one of the
(07:08):
things I would love to see. I would love to
see people come together. I don't know if harmony is
the right word, because harmony would be we probably agree
and everything's good. We don't all need to agree, but
we all do need to try to find ways to
work together. And that is something that I see you
trying to do and I do admire that, but if
somebody listening is going ahead, I'd like to reach out.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
How do they get ahold of Corey?
Speaker 2 (07:27):
The best way to get a hold of me is
my email address. It's Corey p gop at gmail dot
com and that's k R R Y p gp at
gmail dot com.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Very nice, Corey, thanks for stopping in.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Thank you, and again hopefully next time the news does
a story about it, maybe nice that they reach out
to you.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
I would appreciate.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
It's the weirdest thing that is something you should know,
