Speaker 2 (00:14):
Excited to have a guest joining me on the telephone
line right now, I have joining me Rob Berchinski, and
Rob is with the Harvard Kennedy School and they are
honoring veterans. Perfect time to talk about it. This week,
the week of Veterans Day, that was Tuesday, and we're
talking right now about how they're honoring veterans. And the
(00:35):
gentleman I'm talking to Rob is a veteran himself, a
US Air Force veteran. So thank you very much for
your service, sir, Thanks for having me John. Now let's
talk about how the Harvard Kennedy School is honoring veterans,
the people who serve with the largest single year fellowship
in history, the American Service Fellowship. And this is something
it's a one hundred thousand dollars scholarship and stipend for
(00:57):
fifty veterans and public servants. So if I'm a veteran,
how do I apply for this particular scholarship.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Great. Yeah. What we're doing is launching what we call
the American Service Fellowship. It's the single largest scholarship program
in the almost ninety year history of the Harvard Kennedy
School of Government. And what we're going to do with
this is bring an incredible group of public service minded Americans,
hopefully from all over the country to our campus here
(01:27):
in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We're going to offer them an absolutely
free master's degree and a stipend to boot. So it's
about a one hundred thousand dollars deal all in. And
as long as those that apply have seven years of
demonstrated public service in all its forms, they can are
(01:49):
free to apply. So that means active duty military veterans,
those that went to Washington, d c. And served as
diplomats or development officials, those that ran for public office,
might be serving in public office at the local city
council level or in state houses, school teachers, police officers, firefighters,
(02:11):
those that join the Peace Corps. Anybody who's got seven
years of public service should apply. Applications are due by
December first come. You'll meet an incredible group of people
learn together, learn from our world class faculty about how
to think about the big challenges facing our country and
the world, and then how to go back out into
(02:32):
your communities in order to solve those challenges.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
I love that. Now we just talked about who's eligible,
let's talk about how many people will be accepted into
this program. Is there just one or is there more
than one?
Speaker 3 (02:43):
No, we're going to have fifty total, and that'll be
part of our larger student body here at the Harvard
Kennedy School. But fifty scholarships of about one hundred thousand
dollars each.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
That's very cool. So with the number fifty, is it
going to be one per state or it's not necessarily
one per state?
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Not necessarily, But I'm talking to you, John, I'm out
in the world hoping to hit communities all over the country.
So we are advertising in every state in this country
and want to build a cohort of that fifty that
really represents different views, perspectives, backgrounds and states across the country.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Rob, I'm sure other people listening probably thought what I
thought as you were describing that. I thought of a
couple of different people that I think would be perfect
to apply for this. But how do I tell them
where do I send them? Do I send them to
a website? Or how in the world do they apply
for the Harvard Kennedy School Veterans Scholarship.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
That's a great question, John, I hope that your friends
and family are applying. The way they would go about
doing that is to go to the web page. It's
kN dot sc slash service again, that's Ken dot sc
slash service. Or if it's easier, just google American Service Fellowship.
It'll be the first thing that comes up. You'll come
(03:57):
to our web page at the Harvard Kennedy School. There'll
be more information and a button that you can use
to apply.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
I think this is a wonderful thing, and if you
know somebody who might be a good fit for this,
be sure to tell them. I'm going to make it
really easy for you to connect them. I'll share a
link to all of this information on our Facebook page.
Rob Thank you for doing what you're doing, and thank
you for sharing this wonderful news.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Thank you, John really appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
