two guests joining me today from the Mitchell area, Scarlett Radkey.
She's an eleven year old author three books out, her
(00:20):
latest is out right now. I also have her mother
joining us, also an author, Amanda, you got to be
pretty proud of your daughter.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, it's been an honor and very fun to be
able to have a front row seat to my eleven
year old daughter, Scarlett as she has published her third
children's book, A Calf, a Star and a King, a
ranch Christmas story inspired about our life on our cattle
ranch in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
And Scarlett's getting ready to go to school. But we've
got her on the phone right now. Scarlett tell me
about this latest book, A Calf, a Star and a King.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
It's about a family that goes into the barn and
they find a little calf and reminds them of baby
Jesus born humbly in a bar instead of a palace,
and it's nice to imagine that that's the place where
I grew up, and that's also the place where baby
Jesus was born.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Scarlet is eleven years old. This is her third book. Scarlet,
how old were you when you did your very first book?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I was nine years old in third grade.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
That is amazing. What made a nine year old decide
to write a book? That is just awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
My mom has always been writing books, and when I
was a kid, and I said, I want to be
just like her. So I decided I would write a book.
And my mom says, well, you have to learn how
to read and write first.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah, that helps.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
So I learned how to do that, and then my
mom said, now we have to wait for the perfect
story to arrive. And then Lucky came and he went
viral on social media, and I decided to make a
book about him.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
And I love the fact that she wants to be
like mom. Mom, that's got to make you smile.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
Yes, Scarlet comes with me a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
I have twelve books out, and we've traveled everywhere from
New York City to Los Angeles and everywhere in between,
teaching kids about agriculture and so Scarlett's first book, Scarlet
and Lucky, was based on the true story of a
bottle calf that was born in a snowbank premature, very little,
and I started posting videos of Scarlet and her little
(02:13):
brothers taking care of this calf, and it really did
go viral people across the nation. We're so excited to
learn more about ranch life, which is just our everyday life,
and so our stories are inspired by our life on
a South Dakota ranch. And and it's really a passion
of scarlett and mind to teach kids about where their
food comes from and to celebrate farmers and ranchers.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
I love that. Now, Scarlett, you did the first book
when you were nine. Now you're eleven. You got a
second book in there in the middle. Tell me about
that second.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Book, Home Sweet Period. It's about what you can see
on the prairie. Besides grass and flowers, there's animals and
wildlife in a variety of grasses in the ecosystem. And
it was also inspired by my mom's pipeline fight when
somebody wanted to put a pipeline in our yard. And
(03:05):
the book was meant to remind people of how much
land means to us. That came out when I was
ten in twenty twenty four.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
So you did a book at age nine, another at
age ten, you got one out right now at age eleven.
That's a lot of pressure. Are you working on another
idea for when you turn twelve or you're going to
just wait and see what happens.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, we're thinking of some ideas now. We like to
get one out before every christ.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
She's got goals once one a year, but it takes
months for her to.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Do the illustrations.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
She uses colored pencils and her process that every illustration
takes hours or days. So she worked really hard to
get this one out before Christmas. But the great thing
about agriculture is there's never a shortage of stories to
talk about. So she might be looking at an auction book.
We have a bowlsale in February that has inspired that idea.
Maybe an Easter book, something about faith or family or farming.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
It seems to be the passions we have.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
I love that, and Mom just answered my question that
I was going to ask because I'm looking through this
book A Calf, a Star and a King, and there's
a bunch of amazing illustrations in here. In Scarlett you
did this, You drew all these pictures. Yes, so not
only are you a talented author, you're also very talented artist.
And how long have you been doing artwork like this.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
I've always liked to draw. I've always liked to do
arts and crafts when I was little, and I just
especially love colored pencils. My main art medium is colored pencils.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
We go through boxes and boxes of colored pencils. We've
burned through maybe five or six pencil sharpeners. So she's
pretty committed. She gets a little bit better with each book,
and it's been a lot of fun to see her
artistry skills evolved since she started with her first book
at age nine.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
These books are absolutely amazing. And where can I go
If I'm listening and I go, hey, I want to
buy this book? Where do I go to find the book?
Speaker 3 (04:57):
You can go to amanoradkey dot com and they're selling
for fifteen dollars a piece.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
And Scarlet will sign them personally to you and with
a little Christmas message. So we are shipping out just
as fast as we can. Scrout's hands a little sore
from signing so many books, but we thank everybody for
the support. And it's been really fun to see these
books shipping across the country, and.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
You've got people online that are finding you from all
over the world, Scarlet. Where are some of the fun
places that you've sent books?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Florida, California, all those southern states like Texas, all over
the country.
