have a guest in the studio, Casey Kelderman. We're gonna
chat about the Vermilion Vortex Film Festival and it's sneaking

(00:21):
right up. And when is the actual festival.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Vortex Year two comes up September twenty sixth, twenty seven
and twenty eight in Vermilion, South Dakota.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Holy Cow. And this is the second year. I remember
you guys were in last year. We chatted about this
and it was a very successful event, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah, it was the largest event that the Coyote Twin
Theater has ever had. So now we're back for year two.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
We got to do even more this year, make it
even bigger. Yeah. And the thing that's neat, it's the
Coyote Twin. There's two theaters, so we were talking about
this ahead of time. You have two movies going on
kind of at all times, so that's really neat.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, many many film festivals that run on one screen,
they're only running one movie at a time, but for us,
we're lucky. We get two. So we have movies constantly
going on both screens throughout the day, and all the
short films get to play twice then, so if you
miss one of the movies one time, then you can
check it out again at a different time.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
I love that. And you guys have some sponsors again
to help make all this happen too.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Don't you. Yeah, so we're sponsored by the Vermilion Cultural Association,
which is their arts department of Vermilion in South Dakota.
So there really are our tag team on this festival.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
And again Coyote Twin dot com slash vortex if you
want to go to that, there's several different places to
go because you guys are kind of promoting. It's all
over the place.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, yeah, And the theater has been a big proponents. Obviously.
We do this in tandem with the theater, and fortunately
we get to host all of our ticketing and stuff
on the Coyote Twins website and nice get to take
over the theater for the entire weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
And I'm looking here, I feel weird because he's over
the I'm looking the other way because I'm looking at
my screen, so I'm talking to you but not looking
at you. Fall is a Good Time to Die is
one of the films. Before the Fire is another, and
Portfolio is Portfolios Lloyd Minar And it looks like there's
all kinds of other stuff here too. How many films
do you have at the film festival the Vortex Film Festival.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
So we have almost forty films selected to the festival,
so over thirty short films and then just a handful
of feature films. All the feature films that we're playing
are shots and produced in South Dakota, which is super cool.
So every feature film that we are playing has been
filmed in this state, which is super cool.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
I think that is just an awesome thing, and I
love that you're doing this. And I also love that
it's in Vermilion because the Coaratory Twin Theater a cool place.
I've been there for events. It's a neat, neat place,
and I think it's like the perfect place to host
something like this.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah, and Vermilion was voted as one of the best
small town arts communities in the entire nation, so it
feels perfect for something like a film fest.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
And so how far away do you have people coming here?
Because I know some of the you said a lot
of these films are from South Dakota, you have some
from far away as well.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
So we do try to base everything has some sort
of Midwest field to it, whether it's shot or produced
or made by someone from the area. So South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota,
North Dakota, those are the real big states that we
try to hit, So we have filmmakers that come from
all over all of those states to Sound of Vermilion.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
If there's somebody listening right now that's going I would
like to go and just watch these movies. Are tickets
still available or is it too late to get tickets now?

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Tickets are still available at the Coyote twin dot com
and then you can buy either single day passes or
you can buy an entire weekend pass and watch every
single film at the festival, which I do think is
the way to go because then you get you get
forty forty films to watch the entire weekend.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
What a fun weekend. Again, It's sneaking right up on
the Saturday, September twenty seventh. Is it Friday and Saturday or.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Friday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So Fridays are opening night, feature
Saturday and Sunday. We run all day.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
You think I know that it's on this screen, but
it's way over there. I have to turn my head
to see all of this stuff. So again it is
sneaking right up coyotetwin dot com slash vortex to get tickets.
And again this this is a cool thing. If somebody
wants to have a film in this festival, how soon
do they need to get that to you?

Speaker 2 (04:06):
So we usually plan about a month and a half ahead.
Oh okay in terms of hey, this is when you
need to have your film done and submit it to us,
and then we make our selections from there. So if
people are out there making their own films right now, hey,
get ready for next year because we'll be back.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
So that's really cool. And if somebody listening right now
is going to have an idea for a movie, would
it be feasible for them to start working on that
now and have this in a festival next year? How
long does it usually take for somebody to make a
local film like this?

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah, so we actually have a couple of people that
had a movie play last year, now they have one
this year. So nice. I think a lot of people
try to make certain festivals a yearly routine, so that
one year mark that we're coming up at, that's the
perfect time to start.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
That is awesome. I had a gentleman reach out and
ask if I've ever acted, because he said he was
watching me on TikTok and he wants me to be
a character in a movie. So I don't know if
it's some guy that's going to get run over by
a dump truck or what it is, but I said
it sounds like fun to me, So I think this
is really neat. Again, it's sneaking up here. It's not
that far away. Friday, Saturday and Sunday the twenty six,

(05:09):
twenty seventh, and twenty eighth of September. If you'd like
to get tickets. Kyote twin dot com, slash Vortex, thank
you for coming in man, Hey, thank you always good
