Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Spacing Out with BB and Jason this week
covering Battlestar Galacticas season three episode nineteen Crossroads, Part one.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Meet me at the Crossroads Crossroads, Welcome back.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I'm Bb and I'm Jason, and this is spacing out
where we discuss the piece of film or television, in
this case Battlestar Galactica. If you are new to the show,
we're going to have a clearly marked spoiler section at
the end of the podcast, but otherwise we won't be
spoiling anything after this episode, which is Battlestar Galactica Season three,
episode nineteen Crossroads, Part one. This aired on March eighteenth,
(00:45):
two thousand and seven. Written by Michael Taylor, directed by
Michael Reimer. The survivor count was not specified in this episode,
so in this episode, Baltar's trial begins, Colonel Tye takes
a stand and is effectively discredited as a witness. Romo
Limpin Roslin's cancer has returned. Leadama resigned from his commission
after a confrontation with his father about his role in
(01:06):
the trial, and we learned that the Cylons have been
tracking and following the fleet.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Vibe check. Did we like the episode overall, how does
it stand the test of time?
Speaker 3 (01:20):
All right? Time for the vibe check and I think
we disagree on this.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
I was not impressed with the episode overall. It was
a lot of setup, not you know, it's the first
part one of two, so it felt like a part
one of two, so I just.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
I was like, it is, but it was still good drama,
good legal drama.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Uh, I don't know. I didn't feel like it was
good legal drama because there was some stuff that was
happening that was like questionable. It was okay, it wasn't
my favorite episode. I liked the drama between the damas
a little bit, but it wasn't I feel like it
wasn't volatile enough for me, Like I wanted explosiveness. I
(02:06):
wanted them to accuse each other more. There was some
of that, but not enough for me to get into it.
You know, I wasn't media enough.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yeah. I think it's a very engaging episode, so I
was into it. I don't think I've ever watched just
part one of this on its own and stopped like this.
I've always went right into part two because I want
to see how this all continues, which is how you're
supposed to feel. But so, yeah, I found it to be.
It holds up really well for me.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Well, I'm glad you like it. The show is made
for you, white man in America. What it is I'm.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Not lying.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Trivia time? What facts could we uncover for Crossroads Part one?
Speaker 2 (02:50):
You want to get into it? Or what do you
want to talk about?
Speaker 3 (02:54):
I want to give you some trivia. Oh yeah, not
a whole lot of trivia. I think a lot of
stuff applied to art too. So in this episode, we
didn't get the opening credit sequence, and we also didn't
get what they call the pre cap, which is a
thing at the very beginning where it says the cylons
are created by man, et cetera, et cetera. They skipped
(03:14):
all those in the interest of time, and that required
special permission from the network. The Jettison knows. Oh, there's
a lot of rules about how people are credited. Susan Hogan,
who played the tribunal judge Captain Franks, is the real
life wife of regular Michael Hogan, who is Saul Tie.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Oh that's his wife.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, that's his wife. Blond lady yep so anders in
this episode. It's easy to miss, but he's wearing a
uniform and he's kind of referred to in a group
of nuggets, implying that he's joined the pilot training program.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
You're saying out with Racetrack a lot too, get real.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Chumming or not Racetrack, because Racetrack was the one in
the viper that was waiting for the cylons to appear.
He was with hot shot. Uh celis see like the
one that just joins the nugget.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Okay, the one from the bridge or whatever.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, from the hangar deck.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Yep, deep space dive. Let's break down some of our
thoughts on the episode. You can share your thoughts with
us through email, Facebook, or Twitter. We may use your
comments on an upcoming episode.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
All Right, so we're finally in the Opera House.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Yes, we open with Bbe's favorite thematic part of the show,
of the Opera House. This time, I'm trying to remember
how much we've seen in the Opera House before. It
all kind of blurs together to me, but I think
this is the first time that Thethena's in the vision
with Roslin. So they're having this vision running through the
Opera House and they also encounter O Kaprica six as
(04:45):
they're all chasing after Hara. Later we learned that Roslin
has resumed taking Kamala, which might explain the vision.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
But it seems like she's not the only one having
these vision right. And then there's that music and Colonel
Tye and Tory and Naunders hearing those weird sounds.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Yeah, and no one else seems to hear it, but.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
I was coming from inside the ship.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yes whatever, all right, So there's been no sign of
the Cylons for a long time, and Adama orders a
racetrack to hang around an extra six hours after they jump,
and they end up in countering the Cylons and they've
been following them. It's exciting because we haven't seen the
Cylons in a lot of episodes.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
So Colonel Tye goes down to talk to Kaprica six.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
At Laura Roslin's request. Yes, She's like, I think they'll
protect the baby. So that was interesting that Laura was like,
I know, she'll tell us something, and she did.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
She did right away, and.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
We saw the mentaled Baltar two yep.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
And then she kind of turns it into she starts
bringing up Ellen, which I think sends Colonel Tye into
like a spiral. Yeah, probably why he starts drinking that
day and the whole thing and court goes down. Mm hmmm.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Yeah, she definitely triggered something in him. I thought it
was interesting that they use that against him, So Lea
Dama was like, really as stoop to be like, oh,
he's drawn, so that gives Lampkin a course of action
to discredit him as a witness. I can't believe he
admitted to killing his wife.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
I was shocked. I'm surprised there wasn't more gasps in
the crowd.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah. See, like that whole sequence I felt was handled
really well and was like it was really dramatic, despite
the fact that we the audience already know all that information. Yeah,
just hearing him force to say it in front of
the whole legal system, I think it was really powerful.
And then they get him to admit that he would
do anything, say anything to have Baltar executed, which basically
(06:43):
discredits him. Yeah, and he's also shouting about hearing music.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, he sounds like a crazy Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
And then later Dama has to put him in the bed.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yeah. Dama felt bad for him. He was like embarrassed
and almost ashamed because that's like his coworker and a
representation of him and how he runs a ship.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah, it's a second in command.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
So to be a judge on that tribunal and have
to witness that must have really sucked for a Dama.
And you can see that when he talks to Lee,
he's like, what you did to Ty?
Speaker 3 (07:13):
It was on called blah blah blah tied did it
to himself? Dad? Yeah? Lee and his father kind of
come to a head's about their role in the trial,
and Lee resigns he's no longer in the military.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Because you can do that. I feel like it's more
there's more PaperWorks.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Nope, whoever puts that pin on is in.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
The janitor finds it in the hallway. Yeah, because he's
a pilot.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Now.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Then there's a scene where Lee Adama is in the
cag and he sees his dad and Laura Roslind talking
to each other, and while they're talking to each other,
he sniffs her tea yes, and kind of deduces that
she's doing some kamala again.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Yeah, and he tries to sit on that information, but
he's not going hiding the fact that he knows something. Yeah,
So Baltar Lampkin push him on it. It's not till
after he talks to his dad he's like, fuck it,
I'm going all in.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Yeah, his dad really pushes him and till like questions
his integrity and all this stuff. And it's interesting because
then after he does interrogate Roslin, I thought he was
stupid that he asked her more questions when she asked
him like ask me why, Lee, Why don't you ask
me why?
Speaker 3 (08:26):
And he couldn't question.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
He could have just been like, no, I'm not going
to ask you why. It's not relevant to what I
want to know. Like I already know you're on drugs
and you're hallucinating. That's enough that that should be the
end of my questioning. And then she's like, I have
cancer again, and that was like shocking for everybody. It's like, so,
I don't know, it doesn't matter, But.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
I mean, did he not did do set himself? Like
did he think she was just back on kamala for fun?
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Maybe maybe it's recreational too for some people. I don't know.
I don't know and I don't care, Like it's not
relevant to the question. She's not like because she's on drugs,
So if she's not reliable. That's the end of the story.
Like to me, I thought it was silly for him
to be like, Okay, why are you taking drugs again?
I thought that was silly. But you could tell in
(09:14):
that moment that d was really upset.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Yeah, well these packing her bags?
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Yeah, And that was random. To me. I was like,
what the fuck. She knew what he was doing. He's
been doing this, but all of a sudden, you fucking
crossed a line because he asked the president if she's
on drugs.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Well, I think she sees him taking an active role
in this defense now, where he was just kind of
he was security and then he kind of started being
an aide and now it's probably just all culminating.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
And she's like, this is Alastraw, not you fucking starbuck
in the middle of the fucking desert. No, not you
cheating on me emotionally, But you questioned doing a job
and having a legitimate reason to do a job is
not too much, too much for me. What is her
sect of people?
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Sagittarians?
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Yeah, those terrence make no sense, man. But I think
she had some points where she's like, the whole system
is corrupt and it's all messed up and we should
like take it all apart and rebuild it. That was
very revolutionary anarchist almost, which is interesting because she seems
like the least likely person to be like an anarchist.
That's like down with the system, new world order, anything else.
(10:21):
I feel like, not too much happened. Tory was being
like harassed for not brushing her hair.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Yeah, so Tory is also hearing music to assume as
why she is not sleeping well, and it's all razzled.
She and Anders shared quite a look at that bar too. Yeah,
so she yells at reporters and then gets yelled at
by her boss for doing so.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
It's interesting. I think things are starting to line up
here that maybe in the next season will get more
clarity on what's going on with all this music and
these weird palatial settings. Hopefully.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Yeah, well, I mean we'll talk about it. And spoiler,
she's got a part two, So I mean, yeah, things
are setting up, and you know most most of these
stories are going to continue into the next episode. Helo
is a man of many jobs because you know, he's
been the managing the Sagittarian civilian population. He's a raptor pilot,
last episode he was made into the CAG and this
(11:16):
episode he's the XO Many Hats Yes, and he tells
us that the weather's changing, storms are coming.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
The stores will come and feel it in the air.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Feel it in my bones. Yeah, that's basically what happens.
I mean, it's a lot, it's very much a legal episode.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
I thought it was kind of lazy or no, I
don't want to say lazy. I thought it was kind
of interesting that they made it so that Adama bill
A Dama was like trying to protect Roslin and he's like,
she needs she doesn't need to answer that question, get
her off the stand, and then the other good judges
were like, no, we need to hear the answer. This
(11:52):
is important.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
I'm glad of Dama's not the only judge there.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yes, because he's made up his mind.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Yeah, and that's a problem too.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Yeah, And I think that's really I like that they
show that that they're showing that this guy is totally
biased and he's trying to protect his friends and his
family and he really fucking hates guyas Baltar and he
wants to see that motherfucker burn. And I think it's
interesting that we're having a trial for death. I don't
think it's very I think during the opening argument, the
(12:23):
prosecuting attorney was like, he has to pay the ultimate price,
but they don't name it. That's this is a trial
for death. Yeah, and it's something that I don't think
should be glossed over, like we want to execute this motherfucker.
And I think his lawyer was more straightforward about it.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah. I really like Romo Lampkin in this episode because
he's just really good at reading the courtroom and reading
the witnesses, and he even like kind of manipulates the
audience in the courtroom to prove his point about everyone
is just carnal desire to punish Altar beyond any blame
(13:01):
he deserved. Yeah, that's what he says.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
So it was all right. I guess maybe I will
lamend my my assessment of the episode to like better may.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
But yeah, it's uh, that's that's the episode. It's gonna
go right in the part too, So not no were
like resolutions talk about.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Astral Queen, who was the standout character in the episode.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Astral Queen got anyone in mind m Lea Dama and
I was thinking Leadama too.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
He just he's putting himself out there. He's in a
very uncomfortable position. He's not winning any friends. And I
don't know if he believes in the innocence of Baltar,
but I think he believes in love justice.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
Yeah, And I think he seems to be the one
character that is struggling with the like the morality of
all this and the fairness of the true and everything
like that, whereas a lot of other people seem to
have made up their mind in the trials, just the formality. Yeah,
and he is losing a lot of things in his
life because of this.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Although I did like Tory yelling at the reporters.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Yeah, She's like, you bloodsucking carcasses or something like that.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Yeah. I also like Romo Lampkin in this episode a
lot more so than the last episode. I know, I
picked him as the Astral Queen last time, but I
feel like his character does really well in the courtroom environment.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
I would hope, so considering he's a trial lawyer.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
But I'm sticking with Leadama. All right, So then that
wraps up Crossroads Part one for us. We're going to
go into the spoiler section here and we will probably
be spoiling Crossroads Part two, which is the next episode.
So if you don't want to be spoiled on anything
that is to come, then this is time for you
to exit the podcast.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Throw them out the air lock.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
We'll see you next time for Crossroads Part two, and
that will be the end of season three. I imagine
we're probably going to take a little break before we
go into season four after that. Just the heads up,
let's put.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Our living stereo stylist.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
In this group.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Race for impact spoilers ahead. If you haven't seen the
whole series, now is the time just say goodbye. Remember
you can contact us at Spacingoutpod at gmail dot com,
find us on Facebook and Twitter, share your thoughts and
be a part of the discussion. Spoilers in five four
(15:31):
three two one spoilers.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
We're setting up the final five or whatever they're called. Yep,
but Ponders isn't part of it. But he's part of it.
It's so weird.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
What do you mean he's part of it?
Speaker 2 (15:43):
He's part of it, but he's not one of the
official like he's he's gonna be one of those megabrains
or the goo the goo babies.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Well not right away. He's one of the final five.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
Oh okay, I thought he was not.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
No, he'll get like injured, like brain damage. But yeah,
we're gonna have a big reveal next time, learn who
four of our cylons are. Chief wasn't in this episode. No,
but he's somewhere listening to that same music. Yeah, that
music will become a little more clear next time. That
it is all along the watch Tower.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Yeah, it doesn't sound like anything right now, which I
prefer personally because if you because it is all along
the Watchtower, that's Jimmy Hendrix. That gives it a time,
a place, and like a real life person. It could
have been something that's more like ethereal or disembodied or
celestial or original to the show, but they picked something
(16:41):
that's like exists in real life. And so to me,
it really breaks the illusion of this show in so
many ways. Yeah, and that's my biggest critique of them
using like a real song instead of like having somebody
make a song.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Yeah, and especially we eventually learned that this is like
I don't know how many years, like millions of years
before current day.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Yeah, it just doesn't make sense to be and it, honestly,
it kind of ages the writing in a way because
it's like, I love Jimmy Hendrix, and I think Jimmy
Hendrix is like he does transcend time and space in
a way. But there's a certain brand of like white
dad that loves this kind of music, and it gives
me that guy, that white dad who like loves rock
(17:28):
and roll. Yeah, man, Jimmy Hendrix, you know what I mean?
The Rolling Stones have you ever heard of them? It
just it gives that vibe of that like that dad,
and it ages the show in a way that's like
very uncool, and it's one of the coolest songs, and
it's just like it makes it so uncool.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
Well, I agree that it makes no sense to use
this existing song that could have done a number of
other things to make this point, but when when we
get to the end of next episode, it just, for
whatever reason, it just works for me. So do you
have any other spoilery thoughts?
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Does d come back to Lea Dama or they done?
Speaker 3 (18:09):
Their marriage is effectively over? I believe damn they do
kind of reconcile. At one point, Lead does not rejoined
the military. He continues in more of a political trajectory. Okay,
and Baltar is gonna get out of this, as he
always does.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Yeah, I guess we forgot to kind of mention because
it was very, very brief, but he's starting to start.
Baltar is getting a cult following. Yeah, well surprised we
didn't talk about that. They want his blessing. Yeah, he's
like god status and that kind of builds him up
into that cult following that he has afterwards, and that
weird den I didn't know there was so many hotties
(18:48):
in the fleet all right alone.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
Good last episode of Romo. Lampkin was in that attack
and hospitalized, so he's using a cane in this episode,
which makes sense, But then we're going to learn that
he doesn't actually need that gaine, it's just a tactic sympathy.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Yeah, all right, that was an episode.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
That was an episode.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
All right, Well let's go, let's get this done.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
But wraps it up for us. We'll see you for
the finale next week, and will someone turn off that
fracking music?
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Thank you for spacing out with BB and Jason. You
