Welcome to Spacing Out with BB andJason this week covering Our Flag Means Death
Season one, Episode three, AGentleman Pirate. Welcome to spacy Now.
I'm BB and I'm Jason, andtoday we will be discussing Our Flag Means
(00:21):
Death, the show that's available onHBO Max or just Max. I guess
is that one's supposed to call it. Yeah, they rebranded so they wouldn't
have to pay their people, butthe actors strike, the writers strike one
anyway, just sounds so stupid tolike it's available on Max. It's like,
my friend Max, Max, showus on your teletubby belly show.
(00:46):
This is a rewatch for us,so we have seen this full series,
and so you should know that we'regoing to have a spoiler section at the
end of the podcast where we arefree to discuss any future events in the
timeline of the series. So ifyou are joining us for your first watch
of this series, need to skipthat clearly marked section at the end of
the podcast, otherwise we won't bespoiling anything past this episode, which is
Our Flag Means Death, Season one, episode three, A Gentleman Pirate.
(01:11):
This originally aired on March third, twenty twenty two, as the same as
the last two weeks, it droppedall three episodes at once. This was
written by Adam Stein directed by NachoFiolando, also the same as last week.
In this episode, Steed learns ofthe Republic of Pirates, where he
hopes to both sell off his remaininghostage and introduce himself as a newly minted
(01:33):
gentleman pirate. Blackbeard has Izzy attemptto set up a meeting with Steed.
Spanish Jackie, a tavern owner, has a price on Jim's head for killing
Jackie's favorite husband. A fight breaksout over the purchase of the captive,
and Jackie vanishes Steed from the tavern. Steed is tricked into boarding his Spanish
navy ship, where he is stabbedand sentenced to death for piracy, and
(01:53):
where Jim's disguise is exposed. Steedis about to be hanged when the ship
is attacked by another pirate crew andhe's cut down before he strangles to death,
and Steed opens his eyes to seeblack Beard standing over him. Five
check Did we like the episode overall? How does it stand the test of
time? It was fun and moveda plot along. We're learning about this
(02:16):
pirate society. I think it wasa necessary step into getting introduced to more
characters too. Yeah. I thinkwe were expanding the world a little bit,
see a little bit of the piratesociety, and we get to have
Leslie Jones and Fred Armisan and wesee real pirates instead of like this like
(02:37):
ragtag crew of like misfits. Yeah. Yeah, it was fun and funny
trivia time. What facts could weuncover for a gentleman pirate? So the
the gentleman pirate is a real lifenickname given the Steed Bonnet. At the
beginning of the episode, he's flippingthrough that book of pirates and he mentions
(02:59):
black Beard and he shows Captain Kidand that picture shown is actually a depiction
of the real Steed Bonnet. Thecaptain of the Spanish ship is played by
Natcho Violando, the director of theepisode, who is also from Spain,
and then actor Samba Shoot revealed thatthe scene where Steed Stingy is rowing towards
(03:19):
the Spanish ship was originally a lotlonger and included Roach listing all the different
types of the top as he's prepared. I like Roach. He's good in
this episode and that's it for Triviadeep Sea Dive. Let's break down some
(03:39):
of our thoughts on the episode. You can share your thoughts with us through
email or social media. We mayuse your comments on an upcoming episode.
Deep Sea Dive. Took me threeepisodes to realize that's what we should calling
it. Wow, we should havebrainstormed before we started. Honestly, we
(04:03):
just kind of jumped in. It'sall right, we're only just started.
Well, I feel like this episodewas not as like fast paced as the
other episodes have been. Like thepace of it was different for me.
Yeah, but I feel like itdidn't start going until Spanish Jackie arrived.
(04:24):
Then it kind of started moving ata pace that was more comfortable. But
before that it was just like draggingto me a little bit. I enjoyed
when they finally well, I findit surprising and I don't know, like,
I don't know how long this crewhas been together, because it seems
like from what I feel like I'veseen is that they've been together a while
(04:46):
based on their chemistry, but likethey just got their flag designed, they
just started their Their first plunder wasthat plant from those two fishermen, the
first big boat they encountered. Wasthat British off like naval officership there.
So a lot of firsts are happening, and it's interesting that they mentioned this
(05:11):
pirate place that Steve doesn't know about. I thought that was like insider information,
like you have to be in theknow to know about this place.
I think it's more that, likeSteed is just oblivious to something that they
all probably know about. Yeah, that's because they're actual pirates. But it
was interesting. I don't know,I feel like it was interesting how the
(05:33):
pirates like relayed, how tough andcool it was, and then when they
get there, they're like, oh, yeah it's gentrified now, and uh,
Allawan day before they go there, you can tell he didn't want to
go there, and it's very unclearlike why. It seems like he doesn't
like he has something going on.But as it turns out, it's Jim
(05:55):
who actually has issues. The reasonthat they're in hiding is because they killed
one of Jackie's husbands, as wefind out, one of her fifty husbands,
right, So all Wande tries tosteer them clear of Spanish Jackie's place,
but Jim is just like Jim,I guess once a diaggerback, but
also just wants to like I thinkwas Jackie. No, I think there's
(06:17):
like a morbid curiosity about what's happeningat this place that was probably like somewhere
that Jim maybe thrived before the murder, because it seems like, you know,
Jim is like tough, and thatseems like a tough place. And
they were actually really upset when theyfound out that they were only getting fifty
(06:40):
rubles or whatever the currency is inthis space, and it was like undersold
and they were insulted, and SpanishJackie laid that trap out perfectly, knowing
Jim somehow, you know. Yep. But I thought that was a fun
side story. I thought that waslike entertaining, and you learn more about
(07:01):
Jim and Old one day, thisnew character Spanish Jackie and how crazy she
is because she has like that jarfnoses. Yes, I would. I
wouldn't know what to order at abar like that either, Like I'd probably
end up like looking at the jarslike what do you or like you could
(07:24):
tell Steve is a fish out ofwater from the moment he steps off the
ship in his white, blazing likeclean outfit, and I'm like, yeah,
he's he's sticking out like a sorethumb, and he somehow has Lucius
also dress up like that. Yes, like he has enough of a closet
(07:46):
that he can dress two people infull white outfits. As soon as Lucia
steps out of the boat, thisguy with blood all over his hands just
like slap someone his chest and diesin front of him. And the little
sound of that Lucius makes was like, oh God, why or something like
(08:09):
that. To that effect was justlike perfection because if just before this Luciez
was in a fucking trunk. Yeah, Lucia's has a hell of an episode.
Yeah, he does. I likethat. He tries to get what's
his name, what's his name?Uh, to take over for Lucius.
(08:33):
Oh, Frenchy Frenchie. Yeah,Frenchie is the new Lucius, but no
one knows. So it's like littlestick fixtures of like pirates and boats and
little people. And Steed's like,oh, there's not even a word on
here. He's like, where isLucius? And by the grace of the
(08:54):
pirate gods, Steed walks in onOla Wan Day and Jim looking for Lucius
and finding him, and he's like, Lucius, there you are get out
of here, and he's like, why are you so sweaty? And he's
like, oh, we started workingout because we want to be thin and
(09:16):
want our bodies to be small. That's what it is. Yeah, so
he covers for Jim to save hisown skin. I guess, and I
guess, so, I guess Luciusis more than just like Steed's scribe,
because he like has to follow himaround and introduce him and he's like a
(09:37):
butler almost, Yeah, he hasto. Yeah, So even though Buttons
is first mate, I feel likeButtons is a good first mate, except
for that time he like left thesteering wheel alone. I love his small
part in this episode where he islike talking kind of like cryptically and staring
(09:58):
off away from everybody, and seejust like, well, assume he's talking
to us. He's part of thisconversation and not just just being omnipotent and
a weird. Yeah, it wasgood. It was good to see Buttons
doing his button thing. But yeah, so Lucius like probably has to clean
(10:22):
up and like, you know, reset from that traumatic experience of being in
a box for god knows how long, and Jim like was ready to throw
that throw him in the ocean andall the one day's like, I don't
think that's a good idea. Soyou like you see how far Jim is
willing to go to like protect theiridentity. But then when it comes to
(10:45):
like being like undercut on that theprice for the reward, then they'll go
all the way like into the mouthof the base exactly. Yeah, And
they really pushed their luck when theywent into that like side room to like
look for their dagger. Yeah, and we get like, I think a
(11:05):
small hint of the backstory, likehe killed his father prepared to die kind
of like yeah, whoever that husbandwas like, it's like a revenge plot,
yeah, and now that revenge isseeking another revenge. It's just like
the story of revenge, honestly. But that was interesting. And then is
he shows up at the Pirates Bankor whatever they call it and he's like,
(11:30):
hey, my boss wants to talkto you, and Steve doesn't know
who his boss is, so he'slike, I'm busy. I have a
man for sale. He was sellinghis man like a prostitute. It was
so funny. Man for sale Booty'ssaying something about his booty. The double
(11:54):
entendre was good in this one, that guy that approached them, He's like,
so what do I do? Like, do I get all three of
you? Or is it just oneof you and the two of the other
the other two get to watch orthere was like a lot of negotiation and
Lucius had to explain he thinks you'rea prostitute and he was so shocked.
(12:16):
And then fucking Lucius, Uh,he has to get rid of his bloody
coat because obviously he has to staypristine and clean. And uh, when
they enter the bar and they orderwine or something, uh, somebody like
just pours their drink out on Luciusand he's like, why why did I
(12:37):
bother? Why am I here today? And then before they enter Spanish Jackies.
I liked when Steed and the Britishofficer were posing for a like quick
sketch that Lucius was gonna do.He's like, it's so authentic. Can
you pleasset take a picture? Andhe's like, look tortured. It was
(13:00):
good. It was so good.I don't know this just little things about
the show are so humorous, andI feel like you would have to watch
it multiple times to catch some ofthese like little nuances. And then Fred
Armistat is the bartender slash husband, and he does his Fred Armistat thing right
(13:20):
where he's like hilarious and cryptic andweird, and he likes in this particular
character. He really likes talking aboutsomebody having balls, like, oh,
your balls are so big, andyou don't have any balls, and Jackie
has the biggest balls of them all. But it was interesting to see that.
(13:41):
I wonder, I don't know, what do you think about balls?
Well, I think he knew theway to suck up the Steed. He
really did know how to manipulate Steed. I feel like I wouldn't have trusted
him at all, but Steed waslike, oh yeah, I'll follow you
wherever you want me to go.And that's just like another point against Steed
(14:05):
and his naive like the way heis naive in this situation and he's like
not a part of this at all. And I wonder, like, how
did they get the tapas up thestairs for the ladder. Maybe they lowered
a rope or a basket or hepassed it up one at a time.
Yeah, I wish they would haveshown that a little bit. Yeah,
(14:28):
that's fun. This episode was likea little more in like the sketch comedy
Realm for most of it, whichis still fun, not a whole lot
of like heavier stuff you do see, like when Steed is being hung like
and his life is slashing before hiseyes, see, like he's seeing his
family and you know, his someof the trauma that he feels from,
(14:48):
like his regret of leaving them.Yeah, but that is still still present
in his mind. But yeah,Fred Armison is always funny. I think
Leslie Jones is like such like greatcasting for Spanish Jackie. It's good to
see a woman in charge and forher to be this infinitous pirate woman or
bartender or whatever. I don't knowwhat her title is other than Spanish Jackie.
(15:13):
But to have fifty husbands fifty, well, now forty nine. It
was twenty, oh, it's twentyokay, okay, okay, twenty seems
like a more reasonable number. Shemight be working towards fifty, who knows,
but still twenty husbands. Could youimagine how many? Oh? My
god? And then Fred Armistat callingher baby and he's like, She's like,
(15:35):
no, none of my husbands, none of them call me that.
There was an interview with her, well she was a guest hosting the Daily
Show and she was interviewing Taikawatiti andshe was just saying, like, do
you know, like what a monsteryou created by giving me this character Spanish
Jackie where I can have all thesehusbands and what do you a monster?
(15:56):
Like? She's like like I wantthis in my life now, like the
type of aspirations that you have, like implanted. Yeah, okay, that
sounds like a really interesting interview betweentwo of those two. Oh. In
this episode, Steve Bonnet is rescuedby black Beard. Yes, that is
(16:17):
how how we end, and herecognizes him as the gentleman pirate. Yeah,
because we should mention that when whenIzzy went to like, you know,
set up this meeting, he intentionallydoes not clarify like who his boss
is. No, so Steve justsees like, oh, there's here's this
guy that I best did and hefinds obviously like annoying somehow, like he's
(16:37):
like, I don't like you.I don't even know your name, yeah,
Fizzy whatever. Yeah, So he'swhen he's like telling him, my
boss wants to meet you, He'slike I could give a fuck, I
don't care. So but black Beardseems very intent on meeting Steed and he
shows up there. Yeah. So, like I think what Izzy tells black
Beard about how he's like, Oh, I don't give a fuck about black
(17:00):
Beard. He can suck eggs.I think black Beard would seemed like confused,
like or maybe even intrigued. Yeah, it's not used to being treated
that way. Yeah, so Ithink I'm sure is he's not happy about
like wherever this is going. Hethought he'd be rid of Steve Bomp.
Yeah, that's a good episode.I'm excited to see what their interactions are
(17:23):
like in the next one. Idon't know. This show just always makes
me want to watch the rest ofit. I'm like ready to like binge
a whole season in one day.Yeah, It's it's an easy show to
do that with. It's not neverso heavy there like I need to recover
from this episode. It's more like, Oh, what's going to happen?
What's next? I'll tell you what'snext. It's the Astral Queen. Award
(17:48):
Astral Queen, who was the standoutcharacter in the episode. Oh who are
you giving it to? Uh?Well, first, I feel like if
people didn't go through Battlestar Galactica withus. It might be wondering, why
is this called Astral Queen. It'sjust a name we came up with.
Really. It was originally it wasin the running for the title of the
podcast, and then we kind ofwanted to have a section where we single
(18:12):
out of character and it became theAstral Queen and it sounds cool. Yeah,
And it just so happened that theAstral Queen is also the name of
a ship in Battlestar Galactica. Didn'treally relate to the order at all.
It was just something I was there, and I think it was a notable
ship. Yeah, an Astral relatesto the stars, and a lot of
the shows we want to do arespace oriented. Set this one, but
(18:33):
you know, navigating on the ocean, he use the stars. So it
all works out. My Asstle Queenis Lucius same. I figured I figured
would be the same again. Justhim in that box, sweating that poor
guy. Last episode. I thoughthe was suffering. This episode, the
suffering continues. He finds a wayout of all these situations. He even
(18:59):
like is able to make amends withJim somehow, like a peace offering by
like pickpocketing the knife that Spanish Jackiehad it meant a lot to Jim so
much that they kissed Lucius and Luciau'sis just kind of standing there stunned,
(19:19):
and then like he's like, whatif I was a little bit into Jim
Nolady's like, shut the fuck up, dude, that was my kiss.
You can tell. Jim like sideeyed ola Wan day after he kissed Lucius,
like you, bitch, I knowthis hurts you. It was so
(19:41):
good. But Jim, I meanLucious being like, what if I was
into that? Oh, They're like, oh, Jim, that was so
funny. And then Lucius is alsojust taking a lot of shit through the
episode and keeping Steed out of allthis trouble. Yeah, and himself he's
(20:04):
like he's like, no, Idon't I'm not involved. Let me just
get out of here, like hidingbehind people like I don't know. You
could tell he's not He's not likethe other pirates. And it's not because
of his literacy, you know,He's just different. And I like that,
and I'm interested to see how theother pirates are different, because I'm
(20:26):
sure they are. They're not allthe same, but you know, they
like ditch Steed Bonnet immediately and wentoff to do their own thing at this
pirate island. But Lucius was likein coordinating outfit, right next to Steed
with his notebook ready to document everything. I just hope he's getting paid more
(20:47):
than the rest of them. Ifthat's the case, I don't know.
All right, well, then thatis two awards going to Lucius creeping up
on alu Wan Day. That bringsus to the end coverage of this episode.
We're going to go into a spoilersection and probably talk about some future
episodes. So if you don't wantto hear that, now's the time to
(21:10):
jump ship. The next episode wewill be back for is called Discomfort in
a Married State. Let's put ourliving stereo stylist in this group. Grace
for impact. Spoilers ahead. Ifyou haven't seen the whole series, now
is the time to say goodbye.Remember you can contact us at spacingoupod at
(21:33):
gmail dot com, find us onsocial media, share your thoughts and be
a part of the discussion. Spoilersin five four three two one. So
we finally get black Beard and SteveBonnick in the same space together, and
black Beard is so hot. Ohmy god, he is so hot.
(21:56):
With that long, gross gray hair, that beard and the leather. What
the fuck? Why is that attractive? He's like a biker pirate. Yeah,
yeah, that leather. It doessomething for me, It really does.
Because when I see Tycho Ti inlike his Golden Globes outfit or whatever,
(22:19):
I'm like, whatever, I cantake it or leave it. What.
He's a good looking man, sois there're a dime a dozen.
But when he wears that wig andthat leather, I'm like, what is
happening here? Maybe it's like thatromance novel effect where you know you have
like a strong male character with longflowing hair that there's just like something innate
(22:42):
that like is overtly sexualized or likesexual. But if he would have had
like shorty little like a Bob orsomething, it would have been like op.
But yeah, I'm so excited tohave black Beard on the in the
full this is what This is whatcreates fan fiction. And they fucking follow
(23:06):
through on it, like they havea romance, they have a build up,
and then it actually culminates to actualphysical interactions. Just it's brilliant.
I don't know, it still feelslike despite having seen it before, like
that's not going to happen. Yeah, Like, watching the show, like,
nothing feels like it's going to gothat direction, right, Like a
(23:29):
lot of people who are watching thisfor the first time, they're probably not
prepared for it in a lot ofways. And I feel like some people
might not react positively to it becauseyou know, they didn't sign up for
this gay shit. I mean, that's the short end of it. You
(23:51):
know, people who tend to watchthese like hyper masculine television shows that are
set in a period drama, evenlike comedy shows, tend to have just
a touch, a little baby touch, a sprinkling of toxic masculinity sometimes maybe.
And I'm just interested to see thethen diagram of those people and the
(24:14):
hate comments that came from like thevery beginning of the show, Like you
know, when when HBO Max likestarted airing this show, Like how many
people were unpleasantly surprised by this gaylove affair that all of a sudden becomes
the center of attention. And it'snot the only gay relationship in the show
(24:37):
either, There are multiple and differenttypes of queer relationships are represented too.
Yeah, And it just it feelsdifferent when it's the lead characters in this
because I mean, obviously we're seeinggay or queer characters. Yeah, Lucia's
came out. Oh yeah, yeah, so that's fun. Then we get,
you know, a hint of Jim'sbackstory in this. But there's an
(25:00):
episode that really like explores Jim's backstory, you know, we have with a
nun. I'm excited for that becauseI don't remember it that well. Oh
something about an orange tree. Butyeah, we'll watch it. It's trough.
Yeah, Jim's upbringing is definitely tough, and but it's it's like their
ego is bigger than their like instinctivesurvival, it seems. My favorite episode
(25:22):
is coming up Soon, which isthe episode where they go to that fancy
boat party. Yes, and thatone has a lot of like comedians in
it too, a couple, Ithink from what I can remember to get
Nick Kroll and what's her name,Kristin Shawl or something. She voices Louise
and the bobs Burgers. Yeah, and she was in Flight of the Concord
(25:45):
the Three Starvy as well. Yeah, and they are so funny in this
in that episode, and I thinkit's like one of the like episodes where
the link between black Beard and Steedis really like solidify. Like the things
they say to each other, theway that they act around each other is
(26:07):
just like, oh they like eachother. There's like a romance like blooming,
and I'm really excited for that episode. I think these first couple of
episodes are really fun. Honestly, every episode is really fun. So I'm
just I'm excited to see Blackbeard's crew. Yeah, there's no episode I'm like
dreading, like, oh, thatone's a stinker. Yeah. Yeah,
andlike other shows that have come out, there's a couple that are more memorable,
(26:32):
especially like season one. It's beena little longer since I've watched it,
so it's not as fresh as mymemory of season two, So I
don't remember every single episode, butthere's a few moments that still stand out.
Will Arnett's and one episode coming up. He's like a cowboy type character.
So that's what we're excited for.You got anything else? No,
No, it's not. At themoment. I wish there was more episodes
(26:55):
with Spanish Jackie. Well, she'llbe back. She will be back,
like she's in at least one morethis season. Yeah, back next season
as well. Yeah, I wishthey explained what happened to her hand.
She just has a wooden hand andit's never addressed. All right, any
anything else? Nope, we'll beback next episode, episode four, Discomfort
in the Married State. Thanks forsailing on the revenge. I may be
(27:19):
landed gentry, but I'm thrilled tobe granted entry. Thank you for spacing
out with Phoebe and Jason. Youcan help us out by subscribing and leaving

Season one, episode four, Discomfortin a Married State. We hope you
