Welcome to Spacing Out with BB andJason this week covering Our Flag Means Death,
Season one, Episode nine, Actof Grace. Welcome to Spacey Now.
I'm BB and I'm Jason, andwe are discussing Our Flag Means Death
(00:21):
one episode at a time, spoilerfree, and the series is available to
stream on the service Max formerly HBO. And you should know that this is
a rewatch for us, so wewill have a spoiler section at the end
of the podcast where we are freeto discuss any future events in the series.
So if this is your first timewatching and you don't want any spoilers,
you'll just need to skip that clearlymarked section at the end. Otherwise
we won't be spoiling anything past thisepisode, which is Our Flag Means Death,
(00:45):
Season one, Episode nine, Actof Grace, and just heads up,
this is actually the halfway point ofthe series and season two is a
little bit shorter. This originally airedon March twenty fourth, twenty twenty two,
written by David Jenkins and Yvonne Zema, directed by Burton Birdie. In
this episode, Steve admits to havingkilled Nigel and is sentenced to death.
(01:06):
Just as Steve is about to beexecuted, Blackbeard claims the act of grace,
saving Steed. To Chauncey's anger,Blackbeard and Steed are sent to the
Royal Privateering Academy, where Steed learnsthat he has been declared dead. Steve
tries to convince Ed to escape, but Ed seems content to accept their fate.
They realize that as long as theyare together, they are happy,
and they kiss. When they agreeto assume new identities and run away to
(01:26):
China together, Ed devises a planfor their escape. Chauncey takes Steed at
gunpoint in the middle of the nightinto the forest, but before he can
kill Steed, Chauncey trips and killshimself in a manner similar to his brother.
Having waited on a peer for hours, a heartbroken Ed returned to the
revenge and resumes his role as Captain. Steed, meanwhile, has returned to
his wife and children. Vibe check. Did we like the episode overall?
(01:52):
How does it stand the test oftime? It's so good and so sad
and so good and then so sadagain. That pretty much sums it up.
Yeah, there's like this sadness justlooming over this episode. But the
drama is all really good. Wehave their iconic first kiss. Yeah.
The first time I saw this,I was so shocked when that happened because
(02:15):
I was like, surely this isn'thappening. But when it finally happens,
it's like, Wow, they reallylike each other. And then for Steed
to abandon him is just like wow, how are we? What's going to
happen next? This? This isterrible? How dare he? How dare
he? But he's obviously preoccupied.Yeah, So, I mean, not
(02:36):
a lot of humor in this episode. It's just it's very heavy, Yeah,
but really well done. Trivia time, What vacs could we uncover for
Active Grace? So, the historicalblack Beard and Seed Bonnet did in fact
accept King George's Active Grace pardon deal, and they each returned to the pirate's
(02:58):
life soon after. Her treaty signingscene was improvised by Rees Starby and Takeawa
TV, and there's a set photothat shows at the beach scene between Edward
and Steed's originally longer and involved edcoming back for a second kiss after standing
up. Oh damn, would Iwould have seen that? I would?
I wish that was part of it. Why did they deny us that they
(03:19):
didn't want it to be too gay. I guess deep Sea Dive. Let's
break down some of our thoughts onthe episode. You can share your thoughts
with us through email or social media. We may use your comments on an
upcoming episode. So the British arehere and Steve has a journal of everything
(03:40):
he's done. Lucius should have justkept that ship under his shirt. Yeah,
but they fucking Frenchy was like,I want to try the spice shit
out, and he's just like theworst at it. I think Cook,
the cook what's his name, CookieRoach. I think Roach did a really
(04:02):
good job of distracting. Like,he definitely played his part and did very
well at it. So, like, what was Frenchie's plan to run to
the side of the ship and throwit overboard? I feel like they could
have done that from where they were, Yeah, but he wanted to be
a spy. They didn't want tobe seen doing it, so they didn't
get in trouble or something. Yeah, or didn't get fished out of the
(04:24):
water. Yeah. But I'm kindof glad that book survived. You know,
it's not historically accurate because Steve obviouslyis like having Lucia's transcribe very favorable
like depictions of him. Yeah,so it's not the true story that it
says right up front. Yeah, unless he just needs it on record that
(04:46):
way, because that's what he toldhis crew happened. Right. He's living
his lies and ultimately it's what saveshim because when he gets tried for the
murder that white guy, like, they tell him the act of mercy or
the act of grace can only beapplied to pirates and you're no pirate,
(05:09):
and using the book, they're like, he's a pirate. Check out this
excerpt and this plant because they stoleplants from the ship and the plan looks
better in their care. Honestly,it was struggling when it was with those
fishermen, that merchant vessel that theycalled it. That was like I think
(05:30):
the first episode where we saw Steedlike trying to be a pirate. Yeah,
that's when they were going to mutiny, and then that comes up again
this episode. Yeah, there's amutiny for sure. Well, like the
whole reason they're in this predicament isbecause Izzy made a deal with the British
that he's gonna take over. Hangingout with Blackbeard, which I can't believe
(05:53):
they took. Yeah. I can'timagine them letting Blackbeard go, like,
yeah, if there's any pirate inthis world that is no by name is
black Beard. Yeah, And Ican't believe they would want but I think
the arrangement was probably set up bythat guy's brother, so he was like
very narrow minded and in his scope. Yeah, but now that there are
(06:15):
other British officers on board, they'relike, no, no, no,
we want this to happen. Wewant Blackbeard to give himself over to the
crown. And is he loses Blackbeardin one fellow swoop. Blackbeard's like,
fuck you, Izzy, you soldus out. You're fucking trader, and
I don't want anything to do withyou. And I think he really cares
(06:36):
about Steed, like he doesn't wantto see Steed die, and Steve doesn't
want to die either. He wasbegging for his life. Oh my god,
that was the best acting I've everseen. He's like, I don't
want to die, please don't killme. And even the pirate the crew
was like, oh my god, this is hard to hear, mister Blackbeard.
(06:59):
And I think it's interesting that theBritish were so interested in Blackbeard that
they were willing to like take himdown and like or that white guy I
don't know his name, Nigel,No, Chauncey, Chauncey. They were
like, Chauncey, you're fucking you'renot on our side here. You're not
listening to logic, Like stand down, bro. And I think that's what
(07:21):
drives him to sneak into the WaywardSeaman locale. Yeah, because they basically
found the technicality to get out ofwhat he saw as his vengeance. Yeah,
he wanted to see Bonnet die becausehe killed his brother. Whether on
accident or on purpose, he didkill him, and I think Steed still
carries a lot of like guilt forthat. Yeah, when we definitely see
(07:44):
that highlight in this episode that Steedstill has he's still very haunted by the
death of Nigel and his choices inleaving Mary and the kids, which that
I really liked the editing in thisepisode that every time that these ideas are
brought up, it just like wouldflash someone on the screen as if your
in Seed's head in those moments.Yeah, and so yeah, when he
(08:07):
realizes that he's been declared dead, that really stirs up a lot in him
about leaving his wife and kids.Yeah, it's definitely on the forefront of
his mind. He even talks toblack Beard about it. He's like,
do you think she did it outof spite? Does she really think I'm
gone? Like, what is goingon? I'm so curious? And black
(08:28):
Beard's just like ever so gently foldinghis socks. And then it's revealed that
he shaved his whole beard off. What a fucking reveal you ever expected to
see this man's full face? Hehas a chin? What the fuck?
That's crazy? Sorry, this isit's so weird to see him without a
(08:50):
beard. And I think it wouldbe easier for him to assume a new
life without that beard. And Ithink there's like a romantic nature to him
in this imagining of life with SteedBonnet outside of piracy, and some of
the things he said that he didfor fun were just kind of gross,
Yeah, like biting the heads offof turtles and shit, like what the
(09:13):
fuck making somebody eat their toes forfun. Steed's very put off by that
too, Yeah, And it's verylike symbolic that like he's changed his whole
appearance because he's made life changing decisionson behalf of being with Steed saving his
life, and you know, Imean he's been wanting this whole series to
(09:33):
kind of move on from this conceptof black Beard that he's been living as.
And I think it's very difficult forSteed to kind of see him trying
to embrace a new life and anew start, because Steed is very much
in the mindset that like black Beard'sgot an escape plan and we're going to
be you know, we're back outon the road. Yeah, But Nigel
or Chauncey Chancey, he puts awrench in the works their whole plan.
(09:58):
That was like a of something theydidn't plan for, was Nigel coming in
and being very upset at Steed.Still, then he goes down very much
in the manner that his brother wentdown. Yeah, tripping and being killed
by their own weapon. Yeah.Well, no, his brother died because
he got hit in the head bylike a iron whale or something. Yeah,
(10:20):
and then he fell on his ownsword. He didn't trip. He
was definitely incapacitated. But yeah, the same eye too, same side different.
Yeah, it was crazy. Idon't know, I feel like I
just don't understand Steed in this momentwhere he goes back home, there's like
(10:41):
I'm conflicted to understand it, andit looks like his wife, her teacup
was rattling, so like, Idon't know how his reception's going to be
right now based on what I'm seeing, you know. Yeah, he's definitely
walking into something there. Yeah,I mean it is hard to grab what
his headspace is and all this Iguess, like because it's clear when when
(11:03):
they're making plans to run off togetherblack Beard and Steed, but Steed's not
really in it, like his thoughtsare flashing back to Mary and like it's
just so heavily on his mind.Like I think he believes he needs to
make amend face the music for hiscrimes, his sins, his wrongdoings.
(11:24):
Yeah, I think he's like makingamends or doing something where he has to
go back. And he's living inthe past where it's very clear that Blackbeard
wants to be in the future. He's seeing a future and like, where
do these two characters meet is difficultto see where they're going to intersect.
The fact that they met is likea miracle, Like obviously they're pirates,
(11:46):
they would eventually meet, but theway the circumstances of their meeting is just
very interesting, the way that blackBeard fell in love with Steed. So
I'm just like, I don't know, I'm just worried about and I'm really
I don't know. We'll see whathappens with them moving forward. Yeah.
I think Steve also has a verylike everything he is imagining about what's going
(12:11):
on with his family since he left, Like it's all speculation and like,
so he's assuming that him being declareddead might have been out of grief,
it might have been for like anynumber of reasons, but he thinks like
because he's haunted by it. Heassumes this is all like very like bad,
that he created a very bad situationthere, and like he's so haunted
by it. I mean he mighthave we don't know, like what the
(12:35):
situation is. Your husband disappears oneday, Like you wake up and he's
gone. What are you going todo? Like how long do you wait
to do anything? Like I wonderif she's suspicious of him, like did
he leave me? Or is hewhere did he go? Like if he
just disappeared, like and he lefta note, did he he went through
(12:56):
that? In one of the otherepisodes. It's interesting. And then because
there's a void in the power vacuum, Izzy assumes captainship because that's who the
British said was the captain. You'llbe left in the hands of Captain Izzy.
Captain hands, captain hands, andhe is the worst captain they can
(13:18):
They're like, he's making them pushthat weird lever thing. What does it
do? I was wondering that Ithought that was to like bring in the
anchor, right, isn't that theanchor thing? Maybe it's pulling something before.
I don't know either, but that'swhat I assume it is. I
think it's the anchor that they haveto pull up and they have to like
(13:41):
wrap around and it's probably like ananchor that's really big and heavy, and
the chain itself that holds the anchoris also very very heavy, so it
takes like a crew of how manyof them were there, like four or
five? There was just three onit and then we John was standing there
next to them. He was laughing, is he revenge? And he says
(14:03):
that sounds like a bowel obstruction orsomething, and he's like, oh,
we'll see how your bowels are ifI fucking take away your food for a
week. And I'm like, damn, just for making a little snide comment,
for a little constructive criticism. Fuckedup. I'm surprised he's tolerating any
of them as crew. Yeah, you think he'd be quick to dispatch anyone
(14:26):
associated with Steed Bonnet. Well,he needs a crew to get across to
find Blackbeard. Maybe. I don'tknow what their plan is right now.
I think he's just planning to moveon from black Beard. Oh and just
bet Yeah, black Beete is tryingto become the first mate. I don't
think he wanted to be first mate, did he. Yeah, that's what
they said when they were doing themutiny meeting, what they say. They
(14:48):
were saying that black Pete was theworst and his name in is your first
mate, And they all agreed hewas the worst at leadership. Ye,
and so they select aluan Da thatdoesn't want it. He's like, because
you don't want it, you shouldbe it, which is like facts.
Honestly, I think he would bethe best captain out of all of them.
(15:09):
I would like to have seen himin that role. Yeah, it
would have been a cool like andwe almost had it too. He was
already making decisions by saying, youknow, is he was like, you
could let me stay. You know, there are captains who would be really
nice about this, and all oneday's like, yeah, everyone has their
own style. He's like, I'mfucking throwing you overboard, witch. But
(15:35):
then Blackbeard gets on the boat outof nowhere and he's like, is he
make me my tea? And it'slike, oh, we're back now.
The power dynamic has changed again.Yeah, yeah, and it's like regular
somehow, like nothing ever happened, right, except he doesn't have a beard,
right, and they definitely noticed thatblack beardless. Anything else not that
(15:56):
I can think of, just kindof leaves you on it downer. It
really does, it really does.Or black Beard waiting on that peer by
himself. Yeah, black Beard waitingon the tee on the pier was sad
like that. You could tell likethere was a part of him that was
worried, and then at the endthere was like a resolve to move on.
(16:17):
And it's sad because he has tomove on without Steed. So you
really don't know what his mental stateis at this point. Is he pissed?
Is he sad? Does he wantto punch something? You know?
Like he did all this work becauseSteve wanted to run away. He was
totally content with staying where he was. He had a bar, soap and
(16:37):
clean clothes that weren't fucking leather, and now he's he has to move on
without him, and it's just like, what's going to happen? You just
you just kind of professed your loveto this guy and he fucking leaves you.
What are you supposed to think?I would think the worst, Like
I'd be like, oh my god, you know Steve is dead? Yeah.
(17:00):
I was gonna say, like inthis time period where you can't really
communicate instantly, like is your firstassumption that like, oh, he's changed
his mind, he's abandoned me,or like something happened and he didn't make
it here. Yeah, like Stevemight have got caught trying to sneak out,
yeah, because he is not thebest pirate, right, So I
don't know. I would just beworried, like maybe he overslept because he
(17:23):
told him to get some sleep.Yeah, so we're not sure what happened.
And so basically like we know whathappened as the audience, but Blackbeard
has no idea. All he knowsis he's abandoned, he's alone, and
then we do cut to Steve athis house showing up to some tea party
(17:44):
his wife is having or something andit's like, hey, honey, I'm
home and it's like, oh,you're back, and it's it's going to
be interesting how his homecoming affects hiswife. Now, I don't know,
we'll see also him going home, like he'll be a wanted man. So
I don't think you can hang outthere very long. But he's not wanted.
(18:06):
He's dead and they don't know thathe's missing yet. No, it
won't take long to find out.You don't know how long it takes for
them to roll call. You knowwhat I mean, You're probably going to
assume he left together with black Beard. Yeah, they're both missing in the
woods. And no, you're right, they're both missing. So both of
them missing is very interesting, right, ready to move on? Yeah,
(18:32):
ast real queen? Who was thestandout character in the episode? For me,
it's got to be black Beard.Gotta be black Beard, like put
his life on the line, hecommunicated his feelings, put himself out there.
He was rejected, and now he'sback as captain. So he had
quite the hero's journey. Yes,I am aligned with this decision. He
(18:57):
was vulnerable, he was and communicatinghow he felt about Steed, and he's
presumably heartbroken. And he also savedSteed's life in the beginning. So yeah,
he did a lot. He had, a lot happened to him and
his actions will be rewarded with theNastroal Queen Award. So that wraps up
the main part of the episode. We'll do a quick spoiler section here in
(19:18):
a moment. If you don't wantto be spoiled, then time to take
the act of grace and get outof here. Yeah, go and get
it. Well, see you nexttime for the episode. Wherever you go,
there you are. Let's put ourliving stereo stylists in this group grace
for impact. Spoilers ahead. Ifyou haven't seen the whole series, now
(19:42):
is the time to say goodbye.Remember you can contact us at Spacingoutpod at
gmail dot com, find us onsocial media, share your thoughts and be
a part of the discussion. Spoilersin five four three two, it is
not a welcome. When he getshold no, she is like, what
(20:03):
the fuck are you doing? Youfucking died? You need to be dead.
If I remember correctly, that they'regonna like rewind that scene a bit
to like what that group was talkingabout, the widows. Yeah, it's
a widows group. So then he'sgonna walk him and they're gonna be like,
bitch, you don't belong in ourcrew. You don't belong to our
(20:25):
crew. She's she's basically fucked.She was living a nice widow's life.
It's crazy that back in that timeand even sometimes still to this day,
we see remnants of this that womenhad more autonomy as widows than at any
other point in their life because fromyoung women and little girls, they were
their father's property and they did everythingfor their household. And then the only
(20:49):
way to get out of that isby marriage. And then when you got
married, your autonomy got transferred fromyour parents and your father to your husband,
and your husband was in charge ofeverything you did and in charge of
everything that had to do with you. And if you were lucky like this
lady was, your husband would dieand you would have a period of time
(21:14):
after his death where you got yourown money, your own property, and
your own life. And this iswhat she builds without him. And I
like the life that she built afterhe left, because she said, even
in this episode we saw she said, I like our lives. I don't
think they're great, but I likewhat we're doing. And bitch, you're
(21:36):
a wealthy landowner in the Bahamas. How are you not happy? But Steed,
I think you know, now thatwe recognize him as a queer individual,
there was never gonna be happiness ina marriage. So yeah, that
was a he was living a lifewith a beard, and now the beard
came off. Oh the fucking thelevels in the show Man. But yeah,
(22:00):
I'm excited for the next episode. The guy from Tim and Eric awesome
shot, an awesome job is init and he's really good. Is the
painting instructor? Yeah, then we'realso going to follow up on black Beard
and he is not taking things well, oh yeah, no, he's not.
He's a tyrant. Well yeah,it's just it's kind of a bummer
(22:21):
that, like you barely get amoment of Steve and Ed together, like
just being able to be happy togetherbefore all this comes in between them,
and it's a long ways in thenext season before you really get to see
that again. Yeah, it's it'ssomething that's very difficult for Ed to come
back from that feeling of abandonment reallyaffects him. And I understand I have
(22:41):
a lot of empathy for him,But some of this shit he does just
fucked. Yeah, and he leanshard into the black Beard personae. Extra
leather Daddy probably gets some extra layersof leather in there. Yeah, and
then his attitude and his way ofbeing, it's got a ripple effect on
(23:03):
the ship. And is he's abigger dick. And and then the crew
they suffer so much under this tyrant. They're not used to that. And
you and even in this episode theyask Steve, how do you or they
ask the crew like why do youstand up for this man? And Steve
said, it's my people based managementpolicy. It's like he has like a
(23:29):
very like new age like people centeredmanagement style that isn't common in this space.
So it's he's a breath of freshair in the stagnate ass air full
of like really depressed pirates with likeanger problems. Yeah, he's bringing this
very like modern democratic workplace type thing. Yeah, we talked about as a
(23:55):
crew wouldn't have existed then. Butit's really funny they like imagine it,
imagine him dealing with like human resourcesbasically. Yeah, it's kind of funny
that he's like our human resource guy. He's like, but how do you
feel? How does it make youfeel? And he lets them get away
with murder, the way that theytalk about him and they treat him like
easy Hands was like no food fora week because you said something about me,
(24:19):
my Easy's revenge sounding like diarrhea.Yeah. Well, heast sees them
all as individual people and equals tosome extent. Right, He's not better
than them, and they're not betterthan him. They're all equals. I
don't know, we'll see how itgoes. I'm excited for the episode where
he pretends to die by a lionattack, like he dies an honorable death
(24:44):
so he can go back to ed. Oh yeah, that's right, he
has to take his death again.Yeah. Oh yeah, I mean,
next episode's gonna be interesting. Butthere's also like these last I guess like
three episodes of the season, there'sthis kind of this sadness over him because
you know that, like Steven Blackbeardare getting pushed apart here. Yeah,
the storyline and it makes me lookforward to next season. Yeah, and
(25:07):
the ending is kind of a happyending for them. Yeah, all right,
you ready to go. I've gotto go apologize to my wife about
taking my own debt. Yeah, well, let's get out of here.
We'll see you next time. Theepisode in the finale of season one.
Wherever you go, there you are. And thanks for sailing on the Revenge
where we have a people positive managementstyle and we talk it through as a
