I didn't know we were that closeto one hundred. Well, we
(00:43):
did a lot of Battlestar Galactica.Yeah, that was a lot of Battlestar
Galactica. We need a diversifier portfolio. We're working on it. We're working
on it. Yeah. So ifyou're listening to this on the Spacing Out
with our Flag Means Death podcast feed, then you can hop over to the
feat and where you find you know, up to one hundred episodes and counting
(01:03):
of content covering other science fiction esqueshows. We've done Battle Star, We've
done some Star Trek episodes and seenow we did Star Trek movies. Sure,
I'm a Star Trek podcast episode OhI see Icy and we're working out
what we're gonna do next as well, so that's where all the actions happen.
And this is a rewatch for us. We're gonna have a spoiler section
at the end of the podcast wherewe're free to discuss any future events in
(01:26):
the series. Although we're getting prettyclose to the end. There's on a
home left to spoil. But ifthis is your first time watching you don't
want any spoilers, you'll just needto skip that clearly marked section because otherwise
we won't be spoiling anything past thisepisode, which is our Flag Means Death.
Season two, episode six, Calypso'sBirthday. It's originally aired on October
nineteenth, twenty twenty three, Writtenby Zara Farrer and directed by Fernando free
(01:49):
Us. In this episode, thecruise party financed by the proceeds of Blackbeard's
treasure and celebration of Calypso's birthday isinterrupted by rival pirate ned Lowe, who
was unhappy his record breaking streak ofraids has been beaten by Blackbeard. Lowe's
torturing of the crew comes to apremature end when Steed causes a scent among
the rival's crew. Steve retaliates byforcing Low to walk the plank, his
(02:12):
first deliberate taking another life as apirate. When the crew resumed the party,
while Steve and Ed kiss and consummatetheir relationship, Richard Baines aka Prince
Ricky is plotting revenge on the otherpirates when he receives an invitation from Jengi
Sao. It seems like some revengeis brewing off in the distance. Something's
happening. I don't really get it. I don't understand her plan to end
(02:34):
piracy. Well, we'll see. That's for another episode. Vibe check.
Did we like the episode overall? How does it stand the test of time?
You hate this episode? No?I like it. I think it's
like really fun to see the characterslet loose and let their guard down.
Yeah. I like this episode.Yeah, definitely a fun one, and
(02:59):
there wasn't for fucking ned. Lowhad a real fun time. Yeah,
but I think he kind of addedto the experience a little. Roach really
liked it. Roach, that wasjust like hired entertainment basically. Yeah,
he was really enjoying it all right, Yeah, I mean it's this is
a fun episode. It's one youlook forward to, so mostly good vibes
(03:21):
from it. Trivia time, Whatfacts could we uncover for Calypso's birthday?
The kids whom Blackbeard gives knives andthe money to are Taikawatiti's actual children.
Wow, he gave his children knives? Yeah? What do you call them?
Like? Street merchants? Healthcat Maggieis a historical person, although a
(03:46):
New York City Street gang member ratherthan a pirate torturer, and there is
a blended whiskey named after her.In addition to his role as ned Low
Bronson, Shaw could also be seenplaying as a man playing the lute when
the Revenge crew set out to buyparty supplies. Both Christian Narren and Con
O'Neill have prior experience doing drag, with Narren having performed at drag shows and
(04:09):
O'Neill having played the cross dressing ValPearson and BBC comedy drama show Uncle,
and O'Neil also has experience in musicaltheater. Costume designer Gypsy Taylor revealed that
Wee John's drag look was inspired byDivine and Divine was a American drag queen
who rose the fame in the nineteenseventies and worked closely with cult filmmaker John
Waters, and remains an icon inthe drag community. Yeah. My favorite
(04:31):
quote, I don't know if youcan put find it, but it's like
her political views are like kill everybody, like legalized murder. It was great,
She's great. It's like one ofmy favorite divine quotes. She also
plays the mom in Hairspray, theoriginal version, and she was really like,
(04:58):
she like broke into the mainstream withthat role. So it's really interesting
to see that actor do that. But John Waters love divine. Yeah.
Scenes cut from this episode include acontinuation of the scene where Izzy finds we
John working on his look for theparty, in which Izzy asked we John
to make me pretty, and theresults of this are scene Later in the
episode, Makeup and hair designer NancyHannah revealed that her team went through four
(05:21):
iterations of Izzy's drag makeup before theylanded with the one that looked right,
specifying that it was important for themto make Izzy look beautiful and not comedic.
Music supervisor Maggie Phillips revealed that ConnO'Neil was initially scared to sing the
original French version of Levion Rose ashe doesn't speak French, leading to the
show having the English version cleared foruse as well. What however, O'Neill
(05:44):
taught himself to sing the French versionwith the help of his friend and a
Russell, and this show ended upusing both versions. Cool, that does
it for trivia. Let's go tothe episode Deep Sea Dive. Let's break
down some of our thoughts on theepisodisode. You can share your thoughts with
us through email or social media. We may use your comments on an upcoming
(06:06):
episode The Cruise Board. They're justrearranging furniture and fun. Shwayne and Chilling
really improved. So yeah, yeah. Archie was talking about how she popped
out of a snake and partied likecrazy, and they're like, oh,
(06:26):
yeah, we party and Fang said, it's been a long time since I
popped out of a snake, likeit's a common experience. I was like,
all right, and then when uhthe who was it? Friendchie was
like, well, it's Calypso's birthday, y'all, we gotta celebrate, and
(06:49):
Archie was like, is this madeup? And fucking fang said, correct,
amundo, those little one liners arejust great. Yeah. So,
just to jump to the very endof the episode, there's a post credits
scene where it reels that thing theentire time the torturing was going on,
was just hanging over the side ofthe ship holding the goat. I don't
(07:13):
think. I don't think I sawlike any of the post credits before.
I think if you have it onlike the auto play on HBO, it
goes before you before you get thosescenes. Yeah, so you really should
just like skip auto play and watcheach episode all the way through so you
can watch the the additional credits becausethey're really good, just little tidbits,
little easter eggs at the end ofeach episode. Yeah, sometimes they're random,
(07:38):
but this one was pretty funny.Yeah, and he was still holding
the goat. It was so good. But yeah, Apparently Calypso's birthday is
a known thing among pirates where theytrick their captains and the celebrating yeah party,
and so they're having a party theyon Blackbeard's dime because apparently Steed organized
(07:59):
all of the treasure that black Beardhad accumulated during their time apart, and
he's like, oh, great, you made a guilt room for me,
a room where I can remember allof the horrible things I have done.
And he's like, I like whatSteve says about turning the negative into a
positive, Like, Okay, soyou have this thing that's bringing you down,
(08:20):
so how can we make it sothat it's like a positive thing.
I forgot what poison to positivity iswhat he said, right, And he's
like, fucking share your wealth. And I think that's really great, Like
that's what a like, I don'tknow how to say it, Like,
it's just a really kind hearted wayto kind of look at it. They
(08:41):
don't want to hoard wealth. Theywant to spend it on their crew and
on others. I think that's reallynice. Yeah, they don't seem to
have any any financial issues right nowbecause I guess they've got all the treasure
they can handle with over from blackBeard who was dumpling it in the ocean
because they had so much. Yeah, I mean, what was that ned
Lowe was upset because Blackbeard broke therecord for consecutive raids and this is like
(09:05):
now he has all this profit,I guess. Yeah, So I'm sure
Steed wants to buy more clothes withit. He said that, he said
we could buy more clothes or wecould I guess give it to charity.
Yeah, we're noting that Steed's stillwearing that shirt from the last episode.
Yeah, his dark sided shirt.Yeah. Yeah, it's good continuity and
(09:26):
it goes with his changing character aswell. Yeah. Yeah, So I
like the town that's like party partycity. They're like, you got all
the paper lanterns you could want, yeah, and like silk flowers and decorative
(09:48):
items for the ship. To celebrateCalypso's birthday, they went to the one
liquor stand and they only had onetype of liquor and it was cheap.
So I just thought it was funthat there's like it wasn't like a pirate
town explicitly, It's just like aport city that's like got party supplies.
Yeah. How much fun would youhave if your boss just gave you his
(10:11):
credit card and like plan a party. I'd be stressful. You'd be stressed.
I'd have so much fun if youhad a theme. If I had
a theme, I can move mountains. I need like parameters in order to
be creative. So it's like itneeds to be like this is the budget,
this is like an idea of whatwe want or something like, No,
I just need the theme and wecan go balls to the wall if
(10:33):
if you give me your credit card. I mean, obviously there's going to
be a budget, but if there'sno budget, it's going to be nice.
And I think they did a goodjob. It looked really nice.
Yeah, the vibes were good, and they brought Steed's bathtub up to make
jungle juice or whatever pirate rum, which they just turn that into a tradition.
(10:54):
Yeah. I think black Beard saidit was tradition, and Archie's like,
yeah, this man's the voutest funYeah. I just like that Steve
has his own private tub because hewould Yeah the ship. Steed basically like
built himself a five star hotel andthen a ship around it. Yeah.
Yeah, So the party was funand it was looking really beautiful. Blackbeard's
(11:18):
like, what the hell's even happeninghere? Yeah. I like the scene
where Lee John was getting ready andis he was like inquiring about like what's
all this now? At first Iwas like, oh, no, he's
going to be mean. I wasready for him to be really mean,
right, because he's always walking aroundcalling people twats and stuff. Yeah,
(11:39):
so I was like ready for himto be mean, but I mean,
obviously I've seen this before, butI like to suspend my informational knowledge and
like, yeah, you don't knowwhat he's going to say next. But
he seems really interested then, especiallywhen Wee John's like putting on the eyeliner
and the eyeshadow and it looks likereally dramatic. And I like that they
(12:01):
didn't add that make me pretty line. I think that helps kind of let
let us linger with that. Itmakes it more unexpected. Yeah, and
we John comes out and he's likemade up. Yeah, I didn't think
they were going to block out theeyebrows and do all that. I like
forgot all about how like detailed themakeup was. And it's hard sometimes with
(12:24):
bearded people to do like dramatic drag. But I think it was really effective
that the beard was kind of alight color. Yeah, so it helps
like give the full illusion. Andhe's like I am Calypso and you may
drink bottoms up, bitches. Andthen this angelic kind of like romantic voice
(12:48):
comes on and I was like shookthat it was easy hands singing this beautiful
song, and he was made up, not like super heavy or anything.
He was just like and I wasjust like, oh my god, this
is so nice. Yeah, that'swhy I appreciated that. But in Trivia,
they're like they worked hard to likefind the right makeup for him.
(13:09):
Well, if you notice it's differentfrom the in this scene compared to the
last scene where he's singing again, and the last scene he has more makeup
on. Oh, they went andtouched it up then, Yeah, he
touched it up and did it more. Like even his lips were darker,
it was a lot more pronounced. So I like that too that they like
kind of like he's really into it, Like he really wants to be a
(13:31):
part of the crew, it seemslike, and he wants to like perform
a nice song for them and createa nice ambiance for them to celebrate this
day. Yeah. Well, whenyour party is interrupted by a torture session,
I feel like the after party yougot to go twice as hard,
right, I feel like ned Low'sa weird character. He's really into torture.
(13:54):
Yeah, but it's not torture forlike, I don't think he's like
into the actual physical act of thetorture. It seems like he's into the
audible aspect, like the symphony hecalled it, And I'm like, you're
fucking weird, bro, You're reallyweird. And I'm like, how is
this a real person that actually torturedpeople and was like this or is this
(14:18):
like kind of high fantasy. Idon't think there's any parallel from him to
a real person, right, ButI kind of believe it because there was
some crazy motherfuckers out there. No, maybe I'm wrong. Notorious pirate of
English Orian origins during the latter daysof the Golden aged piracy life died became
a pirate described as savage and desperate, man of amazing and grotesque brutality.
(14:43):
Oh don't see anything about music, but maybe the actor could just do music,
so they added it. Yeah.Oh he's got a long Wikipedia article,
so check it out. Yes,I didn't make it the trivia,
but okay, So Nettlo is areal guy, yep. But I like,
I mean, it's hard to believehe was probably around at the same
time as Blackbeard. I just Idon't know, it's interesting. I feel
(15:05):
like he was kind of a pettyguy. He was really rude with his
people, too, which seems common. Like he was like creating a toxic
workspace. And if there's anyone whoknows how to fix a toxic workplace as
Steve Bonnet. Yeah, he reallyspeaks to the proletariat, you know.
Yeah, he's got the HR departmenttaken care of. I think he's like
(15:30):
people centered, he's people first.Yeah, he wants to know people's names
before he threatens their life. Yeah, And I like how basically he incited
a mutiny. Also, they hada lot of clamps, like a lot
of headclamps just ready to go.Yeah, that's crazy. That's part of
their job. Just like twenty headclampsin the ship at all times. That's
(15:52):
crazy. I still think it's sofunny how Roach was so enjoying it.
He's like, I think the torturejust begun. Y'all be poor all day.
Oh he's tenderheaded. Yeah. EvenIzzy was like, oh, you're
just gonna turn me on, andhe's like nasty. But meanwhile, down
(16:14):
below, the decks emerging from theirhoneymoon sweet their twenty four hour sex induced
coma, Well no it wasn't acoma. They were probably very active.
They came they came up for airand water, Yeah, some food from
the galley, and then they justthey like they were like kind of celebrating
(16:36):
their love making. When then allof a sudden they're like, wait a
minute, why weren't we interrupted? And the sounds of torture come in from
above. Yeah, and it's thetwo least likely to be like assertive in
a situation. I think, Ifeel like maybe Lucius, but he ended
up just carrying a bunch of guns. He wasn't even aiming anything at anyone.
(17:00):
Yeah, well, I mean BlackPete. At least he has some
pirate experience. I don't know howmuch because he always seemed to lie about
it. Yeah, he's always exaggeratingthe truth. He's at least something of
a pirate. Lucius was hired asa scribe for Steed. That's how he
got into this whole business. Yeah, he's one of the very few educated
pirates on board. So their wholeplan ends up not even being necessary because
(17:22):
when they come out, Steed's alreadygot it on their control. Yeah,
because he has become Dark Steed. He's not Dark Steed in that moment.
He's just like in power and control. He's the alpha. Yeah, he's
dark when he throws that fucking fiddle. Yeah, we're really seeing his transition
into being an actual pirate and he'sreally corny. Well, yes, he's
(17:48):
really impassionate about how ned Low cameafter his ship and his crew, and
he really has taken that leadership.Yeah, and he insulted his partner,
like he called him like a scumbagor something or dirt bag, which isn't
the worst and soul you could throwout black Beard, but I guess it
like really got under Steve's You alsocall him basic. So oh yeah,
and he burned him with the hotiron. He burned both of them with
(18:12):
a hot iron. I thought thatwas tit for tat, like at least
he's equal in his torture eating methods. I hope he didn't burn that shirt.
It didn't look like it, butyeah, he Blackbeard was like,
I refuse to kill you. Youdon't deserve to die. Because he gets
abandoned by his crew and it lookslike, uh, Maggie's in charge now
(18:33):
and she's talking about profit sharing becauseit seems like Steve's crew gave him like
probably a good chunk of their treasure. Yeah, and they're going to go
out there and pirate equitably. Yeah, they work it out as a crew,
but it sounds like they also hadlike some hards of hearts learned about
that guy's father passing or something.Yeah, like learning about them as people
not just torturers. And yeah, that leaves ned Low behind. And I
(19:00):
mean they don't have room to justput him in a jail cell or anything.
They don't have that in their shit. And yeah, Blackbeard refuses to
acknowledge his responsibility in having to likekill him or anything, even though Blackbeard's
the only reason that Low showed up. So I feel like Blackbeard should have
been the one to do something.Blackbeard's feeling pretty passive these days. He's
(19:23):
very Yeah. We saw him feelinglike, I guess, traumatized by his
actions from the beginning of the season. Yeah, and then he made up
a lie about not being a pirateand owning an in with Steed to those
kids. Yeah, so it seemslike he's trying to run away from it
or not not do the same thingshe used to do. He's in his
(19:47):
soft boy era. Yeah, andyou remember from the Gravy Basket episode he
was talking about wanting to be aninnkeeper as well. Yeah, and so
he passes the buck basically and Steedtakes it up. He's like, you
know what, No, I'm notgoing to let you do this. You
walk the fucking plank. And thatwas the first time Steed ever had balls
where he wasn't funny or he hehaha, silly billy, you know Sky.
(20:11):
He wasn't even a gentleman. Hewas like a legit pirate walk the
plank and ned low I think gotunder his skin, maybe literally and figuratively.
And I can't believe he threw thefiddle at him. That was crazy.
Yeah, and I'm guessing he drownedbecause his hands were bound. Yeah,
that's how it works. Yeah. Also, I just want to say
(20:33):
I've really enjoyed ned Lowe's outfit. It was like so shiny and like it
looked clean compared to everybody else's.Like he really stood out in that silver
and his shoes were so shiny.I really like that. And I noticed
did you notice that Blackbeard wasn't wearinghis like fabric tunic anymore? He was
back in his leathers. I didn'treally note that, but yeah, yeah,
(20:57):
I just thought that was interesting. So, I mean, last episode
they ended with Blackbeard, you know, making it clear he wants to take
everything slow. Steed at the endof this episode is pretty assertive and they
get down to it. Any otherthoughts on this to put out there in
the world. Not really. Oh, I really liked the Izzy's song at
the end, though. I wasreally surprised when he started singing French.
(21:19):
Yeah. Well, he worked hardon it, so they had to use
it. Astoral queen who was thestandout character in the episode? All right,
who's your astral queen? Who isthe astral Queen? Or Calypso's birthday?
We got a lot of characters here. We've got Steed and his you
(21:41):
know, righteous anger. You've gotIs he looking fine? Hold on,
I think we're getting ahead of ourselves. We didn't talk about them consummating their
relationship. It's the last thing wetalked about. We just not talked about
it. You have more to sayabout it. I thought it was weird
that Blake Steed was like, cometo your baby, give me sugar kind
of shit when Blackbeard had established thathe wants to take things slow, but
(22:04):
he seemed willing, So I'm gonnalet it slide. Because Blackbeard seemed to
be consenting, but in a verytimid kind of way. And it's weird
to see Blackbeard like that. Okay, now, who's your astro queen?
Sorry, I'm obviously distracted. Ithink so because you basically repeated what I
said. Okay, you can cutthat out. If you you've got is
(22:27):
he looking good, You've got weJohn looking like the vine, Confine got
Lucius and Black Pete saving the daywhen they don't need to. They failed.
They feel they're out of the runfor me, but they did twenty
four hours of sex. Dude,Wait, so who are you gonna pick?
(22:48):
I'm trying to think through it.I think I'm gonna pick Izzy because
he sang in English and French,Roach made those fireworks. You're going with
Izzy? I'm going with Isy,Yeah, because he set the tone.
We also didn't mention it. Butis he and Blackbeard had I guess a
slight reconciliation. Is he talked tohim? Is he talked to him and
(23:10):
Blackbeard said sorry, quick apology? He doesn't do that. He doesn't say
sorry, So that's really Yeah, that was a point they made, Like
the last episode, He's like,no, I'd never say sorry to anyone,
So yeah, I appreciated that moment. I think I want to go
with the empowered Steed Bonnet. Okay, you like his dark era. It's
like, I like like a transformingcharacter, and that's fair. A lot
(23:32):
of transformations in this there really werephysically and figuratively like and the way they
flashed back to those childhood images ofhim and his innocence and like really emphasize
like how much he's changed and turnedin the recent times. So yeah,
I'm going to go with the maincharacter, Steed Bonnet. Okay, praise
for impact. Yeah, So that'sit for the main part of the episode.
(23:55):
We're going to go into these spoilers, so if you don't want any
spoilers, you can walk the plankwith ned Low. Next episode will be
episode seven. Man on Fire that'sthe name of a Denzel Washington movie.
It's the name of a lot ofmovies, I think, but Denzel did
the best one. Just say yeah. And then there's a Man on Wire,
(24:15):
which is a good documentary. Ohis that about a guy who walks
the wires. It's this French guythat walks between the twin towers. Did
he fall no, ill, hewas arrested, he was arrested. Yeah,
it was an illegal operation. Ohwow, Yeah, it's interesting.
Let's put our living stereo stylist inthis group. Race for impact spoilers ahead.
(24:38):
If you haven't seen the whole series, now is the time to say
goodbye. Remember you can contact usat Spacingoutpod at gmail dot com, find
us on social media, share yourthoughts and be a part of the discussion.
Spoilers in five four three two one. All right, so only a
(25:00):
couple episodes left. There's not toomuch to talk about, I don't think,
but uh, we're preparing for adouble cross, of a double cross
soon. Yes, so, uh, you know the Pirate Queen is making
alliances with some shady people. Yeah, we didn't really talk about her and
Ricky Baines, but he got thatnose from her, which, if you
(25:22):
noticed, it match like the Tset she had. Yeah, well that
was good. So yeah, that'sthat's going to come to a head.
I think next episode, maybe thenext two episodes, well obviously the last
two, but I think that willhappen. And then well I remember correctly,
I think Blackbeard is not feeling sogreat about everything. Yeah he is.
He's very soft and insecure, sohe goes off on that Fisherman journey.
(25:45):
Yeah, he needs a break becauseI think Steed did pressure him a
little bit more than he thought. And Steed's popularity is now on the rise.
Oh it goes straight to his headtoo. Yes, yeah, yeah,
I think I don't know you likeSteed in his transformation. I think
it's annoying. I think I hateit. I don't like this version of
(26:07):
Steed at all. Well, Iliked it this episode. I don't know
about going forward. I thought itwas too much. I felt like it
hurt me to see him do that, and knowing that he's gonna just be
a bigger Dix just like Steed Bonnetcan get over yourself. But I guess
the crew egged him on. Sowe get the Pirate Queen back in the
(26:30):
mix and missing her. Yeah,I missed her a lot. And Richard
Baines kind of emerges as the villainof the season. It's crazy that no
nosed punk, right, that annoyingguy from the first episode, Ricky who
was doing his signature cocktail. Hegot got it was this stupid signature cocktail.
(26:52):
I loved it when Auntie was like, looks like you ran into Spanish
Jackie. She was so shady ohthat though, wasn't she? I don't
think so. She was there inthe aftermath. I don't think she was
at Spanish Jackie's. They were outsidenear where they were trying to escape with
all that indigo. But she wastechnically there, but she wasn't there there
(27:14):
witness that, yeah, exactly. But she knows Spanish Jackie and her nose
jar and I believe Spanish Jackie isalso in the next episode or two.
Yeah. I love Leslie. She'sso great. Yeah. I like the
strong female characters. No offense toArchie, but Archie gives like a lot
of masculine energy in this and sometimesI do like a little feminine energy.
(27:36):
And I think that's why I reallylike the Calypso episode, because we have
like drag, and drag is likeone of the most genuine acts of appreciation
of the feminine energy that is likeembodied by the female presenting like people like
there's like it's like femininity like ona thousand. Yeah, because the drag
(27:59):
is taking it too extreme even likeexaggerated, yeah levels, yeah like them.
I just I love drags. Ireally liked it. So I'm excited
to see more strong female characters.Cool, well, I think that's good.
Yeah, yeah, that does itfor this episode. The next one
will be Man on Fire episode seven. We are two left or we have
(28:22):
to end this journey. M it'sso short, it really is, really
is all right? Well, thanksfor sailing on the revenge and remember to
turn poison and the positivity save orgo. Yes, now let's talk profit
sharing. Iah, thank you forspacing out with Phoebe and Jason. You
can help us out by subscribing andleaving a positive rating or review. Next
(28:45):
time we will cover our Flag MeansDeath season two, episode seven, Man
on Fire. We hope you willjoin us
