Welcome to Spacing Out with BB andJason, this week covering Our Flag Means
Death, Season two, Episode four, Fun and Games. Welcome to Spacey
Now. I'm BB and I'm Jason, and we are discussing Our Flag Means

(00:21):
Death one episode at a time, spoiler free. This series is available the
streaming service Max formerly known as HBO, and hey, this is a rewatch
for us, so we will havea spoiler section at the end of the
podcast where we are free to discussany future events in the series. So
if this is your first time watching, you needn't any spoilers. You'll just
need to skip that clearly marked section. Otherwise we won't be spoiling anything past

(00:42):
this episode, which is Our FlagMeans Death Season two, Episode four,
Fun and Games. It's originally airedon October twelfth, twenty twenty three,
written by David Jenkins and Elizajmenez Cossioand directed by Andrew Deyong. In this
episode, Steta Buttons in his questto Transmorgraphy into a bird, and the

(01:03):
pair find themselves on the same islandthat Ed has washed ashore upon being banished
from the Revenge. Here, Edencounters old friends and fellow pirates Anne Bonnie
and Mary Reid, now running anantique symporium, witnessing their dysfunctional relationship during
dinner, helps Ed to repair hisrelationship with Steed. Meanwhile, the crew
of the Revenge descend into factional infighting, but ultimately come together to create a

(01:26):
prosthetic leg for Izzy from the ship'sfigurehead. And then Steed has Ed's banishment
paused for a night, basically overridesthe crew's will. Yeah, and Buttons
turns into a fucking bird yo.Vive check. Did we like the episode
overall? How does it stand thetest of time? I do like this

(01:48):
episode. How do you feel aboutit? I like it. I think
it's good. I think it's likethat bridge that's building between Ed and Steed
and the crew. It's a bridgeepisode. Yeah. Well, like I
like everything about it. I alsofeel like it's kind of fast in terms
of, like we're going to tryto repair their relationship in an episode.
Yeah, but we are borrowed timewith this show, so like it makes

(02:12):
me wonder if, like, ifwe had ten episodes this season instead of
eight, would we have taken alittle more time and had them work this
out over a couple episodes over multipleplots. Amazing. Seemed like they kind
of felt like we're going to throwthem both into this isolated environment and come
out the other end. Thank youfor sure. Yeah, yeah, I
like it. Though. I trustthe writers in this show a lot,

(02:35):
like more than I would for othershows, I think. So I appreciated
that they kind of like hurried upand put them back because that's what we
want to see. So I likedit, and I like the two women
characters that were just like fucking bizarre. Well do you want to learn about
them in trivia? Yeah, let'slearn some stuff trivia time. What facts

(03:00):
we uncover for fun and games.Mary Reid and Anne Bonnie are based on
real pirates who were on the crewof Jack Rackham, also known as Calico
Jack. We've met him. We'vemet him in this series. I think
he's a very different character in theseries. They are among very few known
female pirates and among very few tohave been convicted of piracy. So Anne

(03:20):
married sailor James Bonnie and moved toNassau with him, where she met Captain
Jack Rackham, becoming his pirate partnerand lover. Mary Reid is said to
have often dressed as a man, whether to receive an inheritance or to join
the British military, and after herhusband died, she moved to the West
Indies and joined Jack Rackham's crew, dressing as a man. Rackham and his
crew were arrested and sentenced to hangfor acts of piracy. However, the

(03:43):
women received temporary states of execution dueto both being pregnant. Mary Reid died
of a fever in prison and AnneBonnie's fate is unknown. And then in
twenty twenty, a statue of Bonnieand Reed was unveiled at Execution Dock in
Wapping, London. Jesus, ohmy god, that's a place. I
guess if you're in London, youbetter go visit Execution doc where they killed

(04:08):
all those innocent people. They're alsofeatured heavily in pop culture through books,
games, music, movies and television. That was a very brief summary of
them, but you can read alot about their story. L seem interestine
the fact that they coordinated their pregnanciesso that they wouldn't be young. They're
like, oh too mad, y'allwere pregnant and then one of them died

(04:30):
in prison. That sucks. Whichone was Mary? Mary was the one
that got stab yes, and AnneBonnie was the one with a spider tattoo
on our tit. Yes. Okay, Deep Sea Dive, let's break down
some of our thoughts on the episode. You can share your thoughts with us

(04:53):
through email or social media. Wemay use your comments on an upcoming episode.
I think we start where there's likeweird vibes on the crew and they're
like, what specifically do you meanweird vibes? Because Lucius is jumpy and
like obviously still dealing with his traumaticlike experience, and so is the like

(05:17):
revenge crew, the ones that stayedon the ship and quote unquote murdered or
executed Blackbeard. They are trying toclean up their mess. And then there's
Easy, who's like just drunkenly sittingby that unicorn, talking about how it's
not fair that he's basically lost hisleg. He's like mourning. So there's

(05:42):
a lot of like guilt and mourningand sadness. The vibes are off,
yeah, and then the crew that'sbeen with Steed is like trying to repair
things. They're like, let's makea party with a pigatta and a cake.
And it just like triggers everybody.Yeah, everything's triggering, and so
they're all like pointing knives and gunsat each other and they don't trust each

(06:08):
other at all. But then allof a sudden, Izzy shows up and
he's like spouting off some nonsense.Yeah is dro Is he the most disturbed
them? Yeah? They can allagree that, like he's definitely the most
fucked up. So they like bandtogether to do something for him. So
I think that was really nice. And what he ends up doing, Like

(06:30):
who's he talking to? Was itSteed at the beginning when he's talking about
the unicorn losing his head, Yeah, and he's like, at least he
has his legs. He's like, well, he can't hear you because he
doesn't have ears. Steve is alwaystrying to be like positive and funny,
and like, I think he missesthe point there where like he could have

(06:50):
like really talked to what's his name? Izzy? Yeah, he could have
had a real conversation with Izzy andbeen like, hey, used to it'll
matter or something. But Steed isjust not there for him right now.
He's trying to figure out what todo with Blackbeard. Yeah. I think
there's like a bit of a disconnectwith Steed and like the crew that's been

(07:12):
with him and like acknowledging the traumathat's gone on on this ship. Yeah,
and Steed is very focused on whatto do with black Beard. He
obviously doesn't want to get rid ofthem. Yeah, but he pretty willingly
goes with like the majority vote. But then he like immediately like leaves the
ship. He's like, I'm goingto go follow black Beard. Basically,
No, he doesn't follow him.No, he just kind of accepts it.

(07:34):
You're right, Yeah, he's goingoff to help Buttons, right.
I guess he probably is going withButtons for the distraction of it. Yeah,
anything, I don't think he's thatinvested in the transmographication. Yeah,
that's right. But that's like anotherthing that felt kind of very fast to
me is like as soon as blackBeard has left the crew, he's suddenly
back with Steed, like back inthe same place with them. There was

(07:56):
no nothing in between that, andthen they're headed back to the ship that
very same night. Yeah, theyjust have like an evening now or a
day out. I guess you're right. It does kind of happen really fast.
Well, Yeah, so we're theepisode actually starts with that headbutt from
black Beard to Steed. Oh yeah, he's like coming too. And I
think it's funny because he just dreamedof him or had like a vision of

(08:20):
him being a mermaid approaching him andhis first instinct is to headbut Steed.
Yeah, and then he tells themhe's no mermaid. And we like when
he gets voted off the ship.Very confusing. But Buttons seems to be
very aware of the gravy basket yeah, and is letting Steed know that,
like black Beard is not like fullyback from death yet. Yeah. I

(08:46):
like that Buttons is kind of likethe voice of reason a little bit,
and nobody wants to hear it,but Steve listens and he tries to tell
Ed like, hey, I getit, you're you were in this gravy
boat or whatever. And I thinktheir relationship really needed to heal, and
I think this episode shows that healingwith the juxtaposition of them and how they

(09:09):
treat each other and think about eachother compared to these two weird ass women
yes, who are like stabbing eachother and poisoning each other and lighting their
house on fire. I don't know, we've been in a relationship for over
ten years, and I don't feelthat we've needed to resort to violence in

(09:31):
order to keep the spark going. But maybe we should try it. I
don't know, how would you likea little light stabbing, A little light
stabbing. Yeah, their faces WhenAnne goes to take the knife out and
she's like toying with it, theywere just like, is this like a

(09:52):
sexual thing? Is this? Arewe supposed to be watching this? Like?
Should we leave? But they they'relike sado massachists, exhibitionists, so
they like an audience and they wantto hurt each other and they want to
get hurt by each other. It'svery interesting that these two basically very vanilla

(10:18):
compared to them, like very likethey haven't even they barely kissed, they
haven't even tickled each other or likenot even a tickle, not even they
haven't had sex or had any sortof like sexual like interactions. And so
they're like really shocked by some ofthis behavior and they're like, we're not

(10:39):
like that, That's not how weare. And then when they are making
up, when because Steed tells Annthat he left to see his wife,
and she like pounced on him andstarted making out with him, and then
she like figured out she was poisoned, and then they went right back to
eat eating rabbit guds and she letit slip on accident, you know,

(11:05):
quote unquote on accident that Steve lefthis wife twice, and Blackbeard had no
idea that Steve left to go toMary, and that really upset him and
he ran to the couch and coveredhimself in a blanket. And I was
like kind of remembering when he likewas hiding in that fort with Lucius.

(11:26):
Yeah, like that's like his safespace. But I thought it was interesting
that they were able to talk itout. But then those pirate wenches were
like laughing at them, like itwas so belittling, like they were having
like an honest moment and they werejust giggling. I just I felt bad
for them. And then they lightthe fucking house on fire with all their

(11:52):
nice things. But I guess theythey're selling their antiques to nobody, So
yeah, it's interesting. I'm surprisedSteve didn't want any of the pieces.
Yeah, well, I think hewas more concerned with getting out of there
with black Beard. And then Buttonswas there the whole time, Yes,
looking for a bull. You didn'talways know where Buttons was. He was

(12:13):
still on the scene. Yeah. And then there's even the like post credit
thing that showed the Buttons was therefor part of the dinner as well.
Yeah. I don't know how thatfit in the timeline, but well he
was there. When he said thatyou could tell this rabbit was rather intelligent.
That was weird, he said bythe texture, you can tell this
was a smart rabbit. I'm like, Buttons, you're fucking weird, man,

(12:37):
He's just fucking weird. Oh andbefore Blackbeard left, when he was
on his way out, friend cheatno Cookie, right, what's his name?
Roach? Roach? Roach? Areyou always tell cookie? I don't
know what. Yeah, well I'mthinking of a different pirate show probably,
But he throws him a sandwich likehe did with with Easy, and it

(13:09):
just the callback to that sandwich wasjust funny. It was just like,
you know, it's just funny thathe makes a sandwich for anybody who gets
marooned. Yes, this time itwas uh, luciously gets hit with the
sandwich. Yeah. And before theyleave, like Steve is supposed to run

(13:30):
out ahead and let the crew know, Hey, black Beard's going to come
back with me and Hey, thatguy that we just spanished a few hours
ago. He's like, okay ifhe comes back, well, and black
Beard is alone with Buttons, andButtons is like talking about change and you
know how the only way he canlove the sea is to become something different.

(13:52):
And Blackbeard is saying how nobody canchange, especially not into a bird,
Like it's not going to happen.Nobody changed, and then he witnesses
the change, and I feel likethat moment let Blackbeard let go of all
of the resentment and anger he hadtowards Steed, and I think he like
it looks like he's resolved to changehimself from that tyrant that he was.

(14:15):
Yeah, because he's seen literal proofthat people can change into birds into birds.
Yeah, unless you want to doubtthat because it did happen in a
bush, but yeah, out ofsight. I don't know. It was
just like the episode was about transformationand I really like that, Like the
crew working together to make Busy uhprosthetic made out of that horse that he

(14:41):
dehooved. Yeah, I think theBusy thing was pretty powerful, just because
he's been on quite the journey.Yeah, and his relationship with all those
crew members has also been like allaround different. It's evolving and changing constantly,
and it's very interesting and very realwhen you think about like an environment
where there's like constant change. Idon't know, I've never been on a

(15:07):
pirate boat. I've never been likein a crew, but I imagine it's
like being part of a group thathas like a common goal and sometimes you
know, managers or supervisors or differentpeople change. But there's also trauma in
this which gives it like a complexityand this like human like reaction to it
that's very like honest. They don'tlike have something horrible happen one episode and

(15:33):
then the next episode we restart andwe're refreshed and we're renewed, and it's
like it never happened. These episodesare building off of each other and like
there's consequences to our actions and wehave to live with the traumatic events that
we've experienced along the way, andit's just very I don't know, I
feel like I haven't seen that onTV yet, like really, unless it's

(15:56):
like a drama. Like most comedies, they're like standalone episodes. I'm thinking
of like The Office or Cheers orsomething like that, where it's just like
very nicely wrapped up. You justpush reset, and it's like the set
goes back and everybody's back to theirpositions and we're back to he he and
ha ha. Yeah. I meanthat's just part of how television has evolved.

(16:21):
Yeah, because it used to beyou couldn't rely on that people having
seen every episode. Yeah, soyou have to be able to start every
episode fresh, right, But nowthe expectation is if you miss an episode
that you're going to be lost.I guess yeah, because we have access
to streaming, streaming and recording andall sorts of stuff. Is that it?

(16:41):
I think that's it. It's agood episode. Astral Queen, who
was the standout character in the episode? Who's your astral Queen? I think
my astral queen is going to beButtons. Me too, Me too,
because he's a bird now and Idon't know if I'll see him again,
but I want to give him astar for recognizing the gravy boat and being

(17:06):
consistent in his obsession to become abetter lover of the sea. A lot
of people went through changes in thisepisode, a lot of personal growth,
but Buttons the most because he changedinto another species and Also, he started
the episode with the clear goal andhe accomplished it. Yeah, yeah,

(17:29):
follow through, love to see it. That's two Astral Queen Awards for buttons.
May he fly on high as afree bird? Got I need a
new address for you because you're aBurke. Did you notice when Edward or
when Blackbeard was on land walking throughbefore he met the Bunny, that he

(17:52):
was saying the words to here Igo again on my own? Yeah?
I bet that was fun me.I wonder if that was improv I don't
know, he's so good at it, I'm sure it could have been.
I feel like maybe some of theirpettiness when they were talking to each other's

(18:14):
seaton that might have been improvised.Well, that wraps up the main part
of the episode. We'll go intothe spoiler section next. If you don't
want to be spoiled, then thisis your time to be banished from the
ship, which we will see youfor the next episode titled The Curse of
Seafaring Life. And now into thespoilers. Living stereo stylist in this group,

(18:37):
Brace for impact spoilers ahead. Ifyou haven't seen the whole series,
now is the time to say goodbye. Remember you can contact us at Spacingoutpod

(19:00):
Okay, so Blackbeard they think hekilled Buttons. Is that what happens?
Yeah, they think he killed Buttons. They don't believe that Buttons turned into
a bird. They think Blackbeard fuckingkilled him. I mean I would probably
think that. Yeah, I don'tthink we see Buttons again. No,

(19:22):
he's a bird. Yeah, theydon't have any more birds. He's done,
which I don't think like the seagulllike lands on the ship ever,
any sort of interaction like that.No. No, So I kind of
wonder like if there had been aseason three, would we explore that anymore?
Is it kind of that the endof his story? I don't know.
I just I do love the Buttonscharacter so much that I'm sad that

(19:45):
he's gone. Yeah. He bringssuch like light and brevity to the scene
with his seriousness and his dead pan. Yeah, and we still got like
half the season the go Yeah.I wonder if like the actor had to
leave or his contract was up,or what happened that maybe they had to
write him out, and this waslike the best way they could do it,

(20:06):
because it doesn't make sense to thestory at all. They could have
had this whole story without somebody turninginto a bird. I don't know.
It seemed kind of pivotal for Ed. That really changed his outlook. That's
fair. Well, no, Imean it's such a short season. It's
hard to imagine that, like youonly committed to the verse half of it
or something. Yeah, especially whenthey tend to leave characters out of episodes

(20:29):
at various times. Mm hmm.I also wonder if we had a season
three, would he have seen Anneand Mary again. They've gone back to
pirting. We don't see them again. It's kind of like a lot of
the cameos. Yeah, but butthey're in theory out there, yeah,
living it up again. Or maybethey got caught and they're both pregnant and
ready to hang. I don't know. I feel like I'm still very like

(20:53):
sad about the end of Izzy.Like every time I watch this, like
I know that he is not gonnamake it. It just makes me so
sad because his growth is so good, like the character arc, the villainye
and the like goodness and I'm reallyexcited for the Calypso episode, even though
that one is really sad too, because they like they're on a high and

(21:15):
then they get fucking low. It'sjust so good. Yeah, did you
get to see his makeup? Yeah? And little wee John looks really good
as a drag queen. All right, is there anything else? Steve and
Ed will consummate the relationship eventually?Yeah, and it gets very tied to

(21:36):
like Steed evolving into a more aggressive, aggressive pirate and pressing violence. And
yeah, I think he does itin a way that's almost unpleasant because Ed
clearly says he wants to wait andhe doesn't want to do that, but
it feels like Steve pushes and itjust it gives me like the ick.

(21:56):
I don't know, I didn't likeit. I didn't like that part.
It feels like a very like pushypartner. It's like, oh, come
on, babe, my ball's hurt, Like you know what I mean.
Like there's like almost like an obligationto do it on Blackbeard's part. And
we'll talk more about it when ithappens. But yeah, Steed does become

(22:19):
more of an aggressive person and pirateand it's off putting. It truly is
to me anyway, because I liketo see him soft's off putting the black
Beard too. All right, well, I think that that wraps us up
for the day and I'll see younext time for the Curse of the Seafaring
Life. I think that's the onewith the that curse suit that Steed finds.

(22:42):
Oh yeah, the oh that's areally good outfit though. I think
that's what helps him get into hisvillain era. Thanks for sailing on the
revenge and he please take that steakoff your face. We need that for
dinner. Good callback. Thank youfor spacing out with BB and Jason.
