Now. I'm Baby and I'm Jason, and we are discussing Our Flag Means
Death one episode at the time, the spoiler free The series is available in
(00:23):
the streaming service Max formerly HBO,and we are recording during a thunderstorm in
case there's a Lextra background noise whichSYNCD up really well with watching the end
of the episode. Yeah, thisis a rewatch for us. We will
have a spoiler section at the endof the podcast where we are free to
discuss any future events in the series. So if this is your first time
watching and you don't want any spoilers, you will just need to skip that
(00:44):
clearly marked section. Otherwise we won'tbe spoiling anything past this episode, which
is Our Flag Means Death Season two, episode two, Red Flags. This
originally aired on October fifth, twentytwenty three, the same as last week
for last episode, and was writtenby Adam Stein and directed by David Jenkins.
In this episode, Steed and hiscrew adjust the life aboard John Yisal's
(01:06):
ship, the Red Flag, whileEd continues to spiral. Lucius has revealed
to be alive on the Red Flagand is reunited with the crew, and
Jong pursues her feelings for Aluwande, much to Auntie's disapproval. On the revenge,
Jim and Archie have hidden Izzy ina stowaway compartment and amputate his wounded
leg. Upon discovering him, Blackbeardgoes Izzy in the shooting him with a
pistol I he refuses. The crewgather around Blackbeard's prone form as Jim raises
(01:32):
a canniball over their head, singinglywith intent to kill. Then it's fade
to black yes, with an aftercredits scene of Auntie putting conditions as to
all Awandi's position. Yes, vibecheck. Did we like the episode overall?
How does it stand the test oftime? What did you think?
(01:53):
I like this episode? This onechecks out for you. Yeah, I
think they all do. But Ilike this episode because it's the reunion and
it kind of takes it not nopun intended, but it's like it all
comes to a head with Blackbeard. No pun intended, No pun intended.
Yeah, there's no like filler inthe series. Like every episode is really
(02:16):
something that you want, and well, yeah, this is a fun one.
We have to see them adjusting tolife on the new ship and with
new leadership. That's actually like good. Yeah, so it's kind of a
situational comedy. Trivia time. Whatfacts could we uncover for Red Flags?
There was no trivia. I sawa specific to this episode, but I
(02:38):
thought we would go over the piratequeen. Oh okay, did you watch
that episode? And the puppet history? No? I forgot to doo Jong
Gisau is based on a real pirateleader active in the South China Sea.
She married into piracy. After herhusband died, she took control of his
pirate confederation and as the unofficial commanderof the Guangdong Pirate Confederation, her fleet
(03:02):
comprised of what's comprised of four hundredjunks, which is the type of sailing
ship, and between forty thousand andsixty thousand pirates the enerprize. Yeah.
She entered in the conflict with severalmajor powers, including the East India Company,
the Portuguese Empire, and the KingDynasty, and in eighteen ten she
negotiated a surrender to authorities that allowedher to retain a substantial fleet and avoid
(03:25):
prosecution, and she died in eighteenforty four at age sixty eight, having
lived a relatively peaceful and prosperous licensethe end of her career in piracy queen
literal queen. Yep, she didall that and didn't even get punished.
Yeah, she's like, oh,you got to cut down girl, like
you've got four thousand, maybe downto like a couple hundred. Yeah,
(03:47):
she did not overlap with black Beardand seed Bonnet. She's about one hundred
years after their time, and she'sthought to be the most successful pirate in
history. Nice, and hardly anybodyknows her. Yeah, she can be
found in a few things throughout popculture, film, TV, literature,
music, video games, but kindof obscure. I'd never heard of her
before, really, but I doencourage you to research her. There's quite
(04:12):
a lot of stuff to read abouther. Yeah, or watch in puppet
form. Yeah, deep Sea Dive. Let's break down some of our thoughts
on the episode. You can shareyour thoughts with us through email or social
media. We may use your commentson an upcoming episode. I forgot what
the first scene was. I thinkit was them waking up to this beautiful
(04:35):
morning on this beautiful ship with thesebeautiful people. Basically, I mean Steve
is streaming of black Beard and blackBeard is playing with his cake toppers painted
the Pride to it looked like him. I forgot about that. You're right,
that was really funny and really good. I really enjoyed that. Yeah,
(04:57):
they're both thinking about each other. They're both like reminiscing and hoping for
each other longing. There's a lotof longing between these two. Steve is
definitely longing. Blackbeard is kind ofbrooding. Yeah, but I feel like
Blackbeard is complicated because there's a partof him that's like abandoned and resentful and
angry, and then another part ofhim that's deeply wounded. And so he's
(05:21):
like dealing with all these emotions andobviously taking it out on his crew.
Yeah, he's not processing in ahealthy way. No. Where Steve is
actually very open with everyone and seemsto admit his wrongdoings. Well, no,
he doesn't, because when who confrontedit and Lucius said, you broke
(05:43):
up with him, and he's like, no, we're on a break true.
So I think Steve is not beinghonest with himself about their current situation
and his role in it and whatit looks like to everybody else, like
he broke Blackbeard's heart, but wefucking see it. Find out that the
(06:04):
only other man on this ship isLucius aka rap Boy. Oh I love
their that first reunion scene when Anteand the Queen are just like, oh
my god, of course. Yeah, They're like men are so emotional,
and men are so emotional. Let'sbe real, we are all emotional creatures.
(06:25):
And this group of soft boys asthey called them, Oh, they
got reunited, like because Lucius wasoriginally on Blackbeard's team, right, he
was on Blackbeard's crew when they gotmarooned or no, no, he was
there before that. The first incidentof like Blackbeard turning to the dark side,
you're right, dark direction was himkicking Lucius overboard and then stranding everyone.
(06:47):
Yeah, but they didn't know whathappened to him, and nobody asked
him like it was weird, andhe basically said he fell. He's like
putting a band aid over it.But then like he's just so pissed at
for causing this, right, becauseit's like if Steve Bonnett would have stayed
with black Beard, they probably wouldhave still been an easy No, they
(07:09):
would have been under the leadership ofAllawandi because that was where they left.
That's when black Beard entered the sceneafter being scored, right, or they
both would have come back. MaybeI don't know, they were talking about
like becoming fishermen or some shit likethat. But Lucius blames Steve Bonnet for
(07:29):
Blackbeard's demeanor. I think rightfully so. And that makes every little thing that
Steve Bonnett does, says, ordo you know, doesn't do, makes
it just insufferable to Lucius, Like, shut the fuck up, Steve Bonnett,
who the fuck asked you? AndI love that. And Steve is
also adjusting to just being a regularcrew member, and he thinks he's overqualified
(07:50):
for these jobs he's given. He'snot qualified for anything. Maybe keeping a
wardrobe like cleaning shirts, town's greatfor him. What other job you're going
to do? The fact that shegave all a one day the job to
sort like scrolls he doesn't know howto read. And then he sucks up
(08:13):
their little map of all the shipsand everywhere that they're like strategically placed because
she runs like hundreds of thousands ofships. It's just like she keeps him
around because he's cute, and it'sso obvious to Auntie and she's a little
embarrassed to admit it. But allWenday's oblivious. Yeah, he's sorting for
(08:35):
things by weight, not even likesize, not like I would have done
it by like color maybe or styleof scroll, like if they all look
like a certain type. But yeah, that's silly. I love that the
show there, the writing is justso good and silly. But things I
(08:56):
feel like on the Pirate Queen's sideare just like way nicer, way better.
They're like sitting around talking about hownice the broth is. Yeah,
it's very chill. And then wecut too because she was in soup.
But that's nice. I didn't evenmake that connection, which is not clear.
I don't know if it becomes clearor not, Like why she was
(09:18):
running that soup sand if she wasgathering information or something, but because she
already had the ship, she hadmoney. Maybe she's just being strategic and
scoping pirates out. Yeah, maybeshe found some girly men that she liked.
Yeah, but Blackbeard's ship is justrun amock frend. She's supposed to
kill uh what's his name? Izzy? And Izzy's like foot is rotting off,
(09:43):
Yeah, and it's just bad andFrench. She's lying about everything and
Blackbeard knows and it's Izzy who notthat long ago they were going to throw
overboard, yeah, with their mutiny, but now they're well, now he
is the subject of the tyranny,so he's one of them, you know,
so it's different. But yeah,it's crazy how they were literally gonna
(10:05):
throw him overboard and let him diein the ocean, but now they're trying
to save his life by amputating hisleg because he's an asshole, but he's
their asshole, yeah, and hekind of saves them. Well, Blackbeard
in is in his tirade in thisstorm, it's Izy who like stops the
madness because who knows what Blackbeard wasgoing to do. What the next move
(10:26):
was. He literally took the wheelsoff the bus or whatever. So I
mean Blackbeard, I think he clearlyhas a death wish in this episode,
and he's he's goating Iazy to shoothim. Yeah, He's like he wants
to be dead but indirectly responsible forhis own death. Yeah, and he
like, I feel like turning yourback to someone daring them to shoot you
(10:50):
is so cowardly, like not wanty, like if I'm going to kill you,
I want you to face me.I'm not gonna shoot you in the
back. And when he walks awayfrom Isy, we hear a gun shot,
and the assumption is that he's killedhimself, but he does like they
they show what he actually does andhe kinda just is misanngled the gun.
(11:11):
Yeah, he disgraced himself. Yeah, and maybe that was because of the
delirium, but he like maybe becauseit doesn't seem like Izzy would be that
uh incompetent with a gun, Iguess, yeah, but he just literally
got his foot amputated. They probably, I hope, poured a shit ton
of liquor down his throat and likejust have them like have him be so
(11:35):
drunk that he can't feel anything andcan't but he was able to speak,
so maybe not. I don't know. It's hard to say. And that's
kind of the interesting part about it, right, Like we don't know whether
he did that on purpose or ifit was an accident, or the why
isn't answered, and I think that'swhat makes it more intriguing. I don't
(11:56):
know. I feel bad for Izzy, even though he is a Dick.
Yeah, and I guess black Beardgets some closure with him and he says
he loves him, and I'm like, that's not how you love people.
I feel like black Beard just doesn'tknow how to love and that's like part
of the problem. And then hesteers them into a storm. Yeah,
and cuts the wheel off, thespokes off, the little wagon wheel that
(12:16):
just steers the ship. Yeah,And he's basically just trying to get the
crew to take him out at thispoint. Yeah, he just wants to
die. And when right before Jimpotentially bludgeons him, we don't know,
because like it looks like he getsbludgeoned. He says finally, Yeah,
that's fucked up. That's what he'sbeen going for. He also weirdly has
(12:37):
Jim and Archie fight each other.Oh yeah, well he saw them kissing.
So if you love each other, you got to die. And Archie's
down. Great. Archie was downthe kiss and it's also down the fight
to the desk. Yeah. Archie'sa complicated character or maybe simple. I
don't know. I can't tell. It's interesting that Jim still has hope and
(12:58):
that they're still thinking about Like Ididn't realize I was living through the good
old days when I was there. You don't know until they're past you how
poetic. Yep, you know whatwas weird? What the whole witch subplot?
Yeah, the Buttons is the seaWitch. Yeah, he's like like
super weird around Buttons. Yeah, she's like, I recognize you, Sea
(13:22):
Witch, and Buttons like doesn't denyanything. He doesn't seem to be like,
he doesn't seem to know what she'stalking about. But he's also like
very cryptic. Let's not assume thatwe know anything. Yeah, he's very
cryptic, very wise. And thenshe gives him this like she calls it
a book, but it's just likeit looks like a long piece of paper,
a pamphlet. Yeah, transmorgification orsomething, yeah, transforming into animals.
(13:46):
Yeah, and it's like, what'she gonna do with that? I
don't know. He's also hanging outwith birds again. Yeah, he's back
at sea. He is so happy, He is truly happy. Yeah.
I think he was the most hauntedby all the time they spent on land
and is the most relieved. Yeah. He was so excited when Cheng came
(14:07):
out and said good morning, andhe's like yeah, and then they're doing
tai Chi look like, Yeah,we've got a very different atmosphere on these
two ships. I also love thatlike none of them seem to know what
China is. No, and uhall one day like set it over and
over and over again. It almostfelt like I was upset, like,
(14:28):
how dare you say China so manytimes? He's like China, China,
China, trying to commit it tomemory. But they've been in the Caribbean
for so long. Yeah, butsurely they know that there's something east of
Europe. They know the British, they've been invaded by the British and the
Spanish. Yeah, but I guess, yeah, China's kind of on the
(14:50):
other side of the continent. Yeah, but yeah, it's an interesting crew.
I love that they were like yeah, s queen, Yeah, yeah,
that was buttons like when they wokeup in the morning, Oh yeah,
he did say yes, queen. And Lucia's when he came in,
he said, hey, Queen,it's very clear coded. There was one
(15:11):
thing near the end, the crewof the Red Flag was pulling these ships
off the land. I didn't knowwhat that was about. It was just
interesting. There clearly something is beingplotted with Antie and all the ships on
the board, and yeah, they'recrossing up. Like Lawande said, some
of your boats were on land.It was all messed up, So I
(15:31):
cleaned it up, and I thinkthat's what he was teet cleared off.
They were. You know, beforethe Panama Canal got built, there was
just land there. And if thoseboats are coming in from China and trying
to get through to the Caribbean, the easiest way that before the Panama Canal,
you would have to go all theway down South America. So the
(15:54):
I'm guessing we are to assume thatthey're crossing maybe that area because there is
like a narrow landstrip and there's areason why they were able to build a
canal. But that's that's my personallike theory of what it is that they're
they're crossing Panama to get to theCaribbean from the Pacific Ocean. But I
(16:17):
don't know why. Yeah, Idon't know either. Yeah, that's crazy.
I feel like it would take waymore people than what they showed to
pull a whole ship across. Yeah, they had like a line of them.
Yeah, so anything else. Ifeel bad for rat boy. He
went through a lot, like hestarted smoking. Yeah, like damn,
and I like that. Bonnet toldhim that he needs to talk it out
(16:41):
with his partner instead of like blowingup on him, and he's like,
hah, I'm taking advice from you, you loser. And he's like,
no, I'm older than you.Trust me, like I've been in fucked
up relationships, Like I fucked upmy fair share. This is how that
is how you do it. Youneed to talk to your friend or your
friend or whatever. See that's whyI feel like Steve is a little bit
(17:03):
more in touch with how he's fuckedthings up. Yeah, astoral queen.
Who was the standout character in theepisode? I picked Lucious Lucious, Yeah,
for being a survivor and talking itout. He did survive a lot
of things. Yeah, he wentthrough a lot and he's back and he's
(17:25):
one of my favorite characters. AndI don't know that's that's who I picked.
I almost picked All the one dayfor being a cutie, and thought
about picking Jim for being a badassand having hope, but I picked Lucious.
Who do you pick? I waslooking at Steed for helping Lucius to
(17:45):
process everything, uh huh, andsteer him in the right direction. But
I think I'm gonna go with Izzyon this one. That is completely I
forgot all about Izzy because he waslaying horizontal most of the time. Well,
the guy lost the leg, soyeah, he was not in the
best condition. But I feel likehe was aware enough of what Blackbeard was
(18:08):
trying to goat him into and didn'ttake the bait. But then later he
gets up and saves the day.Yeah, saves them from the madness.
They're still in a dangerous storm.Yeah without a wheel. Yeah, so
so Izy and Lucius an unlikely duo, right they hate each other? All
(18:30):
right? All right, that doesit for the main part of the episode.
We will see you next time forepisode three, called The Innkeeper,
and we're gonna go into the spoilersections. So if you' want need spoilers,
then time to jump overboard. Let'sput our living stereo stylus in this
room. Grace for impact. Spoilersahead. If you haven't seen the whole
(18:55):
series, now is the time tosay goodbye. Remember you can contact us
at Spacingoutpod at gmail dot com, find us on social media, share your
thoughts and be a part of thediscussion. Spoilers in five four three two
one. I mean, I can'tbelieve they actually bludgeon him to unconsciousness and
(19:18):
that he's like in this limbo betweenlife and death. And that's crazy.
So I can't believe they do thatand they keep him instead of like throwing
him overboard in the water and lettinghim let the sharks get him or something.
They have a thing about keeping peoplethat are in your desk. Yeah.
Yeah, And I think the nextepisode is it the one where we
(19:41):
meet those women in the antique shop. It's not. I was thinking that
originally when I saw it Inkeeper,But this is the one with Blackbeard like
in the predatory state with his oldcaptain. Oh okay, And I believe
the crew is gonna come across theship the revenge. Yeah, and so
(20:03):
Buttons will take what he's learning fromthe Oh yeah. The fact that that
transpires into something is fucking nuts.Yeah, he becomes a bird, Like
legitimately, he becomes a bird. They went there, and I'm like,
I can't believe they ended it likethat, Like he becomes a bird.
Everyone thinks that Blackbeard killed him orsomething, or that they disappeared him,
(20:29):
but he's a fucking bird. Bro, that's cannon. Oh and then yes,
you could have like a set ofdoubt still because I think it kind
of happens like behind the bush orsomething. Yeah, I'm going to choose
to believe in the bird. That'swhat I'm gonna choose. It sucks when
they have to like leave the piratequeen and all of one day it's like,
sorry, I gotta go with theseguys. And then she's like revengeful
(20:52):
against them and they have an enemy. But then the fucking nose guy shows
up and then they he fucks everythingup and she has to join their crew.
It's very interesting, very interesting, and Steve is slowly becoming like a
better pirate throughout this whole transition,Like he starts like getting a reputation and
everything, and Blackbeard's a little botheredby that that he likes it so much,
(21:17):
but like, this is the reasonwhy Steve became a pirate. But
then they end up in a theybecome the Innkeepers. Very interesting, and
that's the end of the story. The end. All right, Well,
I guess that's all we got foryou today. Yeah, we got a
very important message from a carrier bird, so we gotta go. Thanks for
sailing on the revenge and I hopethat we can be called the break in
