Welcome to Spacing Out with BB andJason this week covering Our Flag Means Death
Season one, Episode six, TheArt of Fuckery. Welcome to Spacey Now.
I'm BB and I'm Jason, andwe are discussing Our Flag Means Death

(00:21):
one episode at a time, spoilerfree. We've basically taken our microphones and
brought them aboard the Revenge and we'rejust commenting on everything happening. We're sailing
it along the Seven C's with theragtag group of people's and because Steed obviously
has a podcasting studio on that ship, I mean he has everything. He

(00:43):
even has a nice little bathroom. The series is available on the streaming service
Max formerly HBO, and this isa rewatch for us, so we will
have a spoiler section at the endof the podcast where we are free to
discuss any future events in the series. So if this is your first time
watching you don't want any spoilers, you'll just need to skip that clearly marked

(01:03):
section, Otherwise we won't be spoilinganything past this episode, which is Our
Flag Means Death Season one, episodesix, The Art of Fuckery. This
aired on March tenth, twenty twentytwo. Directed or Sorry, Written by
Simone Nathan, directed by Fernando Frius. In this episode, Blackbeard helps Steed
practice dueling and shows him how tosurvive a stabbing. Steed tries his hand

(01:26):
at a fuckery the Theater of Fear, by which Blackbeard frightens other ships.
Blackbeard processes some of the trauma fromkilling his own father, Lucius amputates his
own finger due to it an infection, and Black Pete whittles him a new
one. Blackbeard confesses his plan tokill Steed and steal his life. Izzy
then challenges Steed to a duel, but loses due to Steed surviving the stabbing

(01:49):
and breaking is He's sword, leadingto Izzy's banishment. Izzy then makes his
way to Spanish Jackie, I don'tthink was banished. I think that was
like a self banishing. I thinkthey said pretty clearly that he would he
was banish. No, they saidthey could work it out. Blackbeard said
we could work this out, mate. I have to go back to the
tapes. Let's go right now, posit. I'm assuming standard dual rules apply.

(02:15):
What are those exactly? That's makeit interesting? Shall we the loser's
bout us from the ship If they'renot done. I'm totally wrong, I
admit it. I didn't hear himsay that the terms of the duel were
banishment, but he said the rules. So now he's upset about it and

(02:36):
he's like, you're really doing this? Yeah whatever. I feel like he
did it to himself regardless. Hedidn't foresee the cherry wood or whatever.
He said, Yeah, the Braziliancherry wood. Uh yeah, okay,
So has he then made his wayto Spanish Jack you to work something out
with her? Tbd? Yeah? All right? Check. Did we like

(03:00):
the episode overall? How does itstand the test of time? Did you
like this one? I did likethis one. It's not like my favorite
favorite, but it's well, no, I can't say that either. It
is really good. I really likethe theatrical aspect of it. I think
it's so interesting, like they werevery almost they hit some theatrical like cliches

(03:28):
that I really enjoyed, like everyone'swearing black and stuff like that. Yeah,
it's definitely a fun one. It'skind of almost like a standalone episode
in the series. Like I mean, it's not because obviously like Izzy is
going off to do anything, butuh yeah, there's it's just a fun
time on the sea. Yeah, and I like that the crew of the

(03:49):
Revenge gets to flex their pirate muscle, the creative muscles, Yeah, in
their own unique way. Trivia time. What facts could we uncover for the
art of fuckery? A little bitof trivia here. The duel between Izzy

(04:10):
and Steed took an entire day tofilm. An additional scene was filmed and
cut from the final edit in whichthe crew sedate Lucius with opium after his
finger gets infected, almost killing himand causing Black Pete to mourn his lover
before it turns out he's not dead, which I think he was kind of
referencing that at the end of theepisode. Yeah. The scene of Izzy's
departure from the Revenge was originally alot longer and involved both him and ed

(04:33):
shouting obscenities at each other, butmuch of it didn't make it into the
final cut. And then there's aphoto from the set photographer that was posted
that reveals an additional scene between Edwardand Steed that was shot following their sparring
at the beginning of the episode, and in that scene, look like Steed
helps the wounded Edward walk, presumablytaking him to go rest somewhere deep sea

(05:00):
dive. Let's break down some ofour thoughts on the episode. You can
share your thoughts with us through emailor social media. We may use your
comments on an upcoming episode. Theepisode kicks off with some ghost stories,
Yeah, some lame ones from SteveBonnet, and then Blackbeard's like, well,
I don't feel fear, but ifI did, it would be this

(05:24):
made up story. I like howchildlike Swede can be. Sometimes he's like,
but the Kraken's not real, right, He's so like quizical and full
of wonder and his angelic voice.Yeah. I like that they featured that,

(05:46):
and that he was kind of aHe had a small focal point in
the episode where they were like, sweet has talents, our Nordic angel.
I thought that was I don't know. I like that they give each crew
member like a little more backstory, and so like this scary storytelling seems to

(06:09):
inspire Blackbeard to continue the Revenge's educationin pirate hood. Yeah. So it's
a lot of a lot of smokeand mirrors. Yeah, where did they
get the fog machine and the andthe and the pyrotechnics. That's a good
question. How would you make smokein that era. It's not like they

(06:31):
have dry ice or something on board, right. It might be the the
Opium, but the Revenge, thecrew of the Revenge was really freaked out
and it put oh my god,I'm the worst at names, and I
don't have the list of names likewe usually have. The first mate Buttons,
Yeah, put Buttons on edge.He came into Steve Bonnet's little bedroom

(06:57):
chamber and he's like, Captain, there's some witchy afoot which that like awakening
was just one of the more terrifyingthings. Yeah, and he's like he
comes out and everybody's like frantic, and Lucius points at something and Buttons bites
him. Yes, and that's whatcauses Lucius all these problems. It's like

(07:24):
an infectious dog bite or something.Because he had his summer teeth in there's
wood in there. He's like, why do I have a splinter? He
must have broken like he must havebitten so hard that he broke the skin
or the splinter broke the skin, because that's the only way you can get

(07:45):
an infection is by breaking the skin. The skin is the first barrier against
infection for the body, and itdoes a very good job for the most
part. But the fact that buttonsbite was so strong that he like splintered
a piece of his tooth on Lucius'sfinger was pretty interesting, I thought.

(08:07):
And there's never any moment of likeButtons acknowledging like what he the harmy caused
so Lucius, or any apology oranything like that. They don't know what
the hell caused it. They're like, maybe it's infected, but who knows,
maybe a witch did it or youknow what I mean. They're like
superstitious. Like people didn't know thatthey were supposed to eat oranges and citrus

(08:30):
fruits because it helped like cure scurvy. They just knew instinctively. There's like
an instinct part to it. Idon't know. I think he would have
to know that he did that, and he did apologize in the moment,
He's like sorry, mate, LikeI'm a little on edge. The rest
of it is just like that's whathappens when you're living in this world before,

(08:54):
Like I don't know if they evenhad antibiotics at that point, you
know, at least not on pirateship. That's why you had so many
pirates with like a peg leg ora hook for a hand so amputation,
which Roach was ready to do.Yeah, Roach was really ready. I

(09:15):
like that they took him when hewas passed out so there was no consent,
and then when he woke up,Roach is like, you're dreaming come
back. It was scary. Ireally like Roach. In this episode he
does he does the bit where hethrows that sandwich at a easy yeah,

(09:43):
and he's like, I made youa sandwich and he throws it at him.
And if I Isy was any sortof like good, insane person,
he would have caught the sandwich andsaid thanks, at least I have a
sandwich, right, But instead hecompletely ignores it and hits him in the
head and then go straight into theocean. I want to know how many

(10:03):
times they had to film him gettingit in the head with a sandwich for
it to land exactly where they neededit to. It just made me laugh.
It made you laugh so hard toit's so it was silly with a
sandwich on your on your like banishmenttour, You're like, this is a

(10:28):
very serious moment. You're saying goodbyeand you're you're you're like really upset,
and obviously there's like something that happenedbetween him and Blackbeard that's been irreparably damaged.
I also, I just love thatRoach is always like making food for

(10:50):
occasions, Like you made all thosetapas for that one trip he's getting banished.
Better make him a sandwich. Yeah, it's a sandwich. Who knows
when when the next time he'll getto eat it? And that poor sandwich
went the waste? Right, Maybeit was good, We don't know it

(11:11):
it was. It was a goodepisode. Yeah, So Steed tries to
take on his own very theatrical takeright on the fuckery and he has like
a little rehearsal meeting and all,and he blows up on them. Yeah,
He's like, y'all suck these stories. They suck and sweets kind of
seemed interesting. He's like, onthe day I was born, it was

(11:33):
raining and it looked like blood. That's scary. Would I would use that?
Like, what can we do withthat? But I don't remember what
he does. Does he go toBlackbeard or who talks to him? So
he comes back with rejuvenated? Doesis he? Oh? Yeah? Because
is he wants him to go throughwith it so that Blackbeard will kill him,

(11:56):
right, Because in the confusion.Well, he knows that Deed Bonnet
is not capable of doing this, and the original plan is for Steed to
go onto another ship and try todo this, And I imagine that Izzy
and Blackbeard were hoping that in theconfusion of it all, he can easily
murder Steed, or Steed would beend up getting injured anyway, so he

(12:20):
would murder Steed and it would looklike the other crew did it. Yeah,
that's what I my understanding was like, that's what Izzy was like,
No, I vouched for you,you have to go through with this.
But then they rewrote the script toinvite the other Yeah, now they're getting
on the ship and the Dutch dudesthey had like very pilgrimasque outfits. They

(12:43):
look like little Pilgrims with their whitecollars and their little black slacks, and
they they came on board and itwas you know, what it kind of
reminded me of is like those scaredstraight kind of like church haunted houses where
it's like Billy tried a marijuana andnow he's in jail kind of shit.

(13:05):
Yeah, which one was your favorite? I think mine was Lucious chopping off
his finger. Yeah, that waslike the Grand Finale. What was that
that was? Like infection? Wasit part of it or was he just
like he was just a moment.Yeah. I think it was like his
brain was so cooked with the infection, because you get a fever, and

(13:30):
fever people who with high fevers tendto lose logical brain function, and I
think he was. And you know, apparently based on some of our trivia,
he might have been also writing theDragon, you know, so there

(13:50):
might be drugs involved here. Andhe's he's like that finger so fat and
swollen. That did such a goodjob of making it look disgusting, realistic
in a way. It was sogood and he chops it off with a
pair of scissors. That was thescariest part. He had good timing regardless,

(14:11):
and even Blackbeard was like, howthe fuck do you pull that off?
And then Blackbeard is like doing ashame spiral as the the fake Kraken
starts knocking on the window rhythmically, and there's all this like weird Swedish guy
singing like something is triggering his likememory that he kind of alluded to earlier

(14:37):
in the story, and we seethe reality of his life as a child
where his mother seemed to be thelike, the carrying caregiver in his life,
and she was obviously being abused, and it was probably not the first
time that he witnessed that type ofabuse, but it was definitely the last

(14:58):
time. And it makes him kindof a sympathetic character even though he's a
murderer. Yeah, and so thisstory about the kraken is one that he's
created. I don't know if he'stold that to other people before or he
just tells it to himself, buthe and it also comes to light that
he hasn't killed anyone since he killedhis own phone. Allegedly, just because
you didn't pull the trigger doesn't meanyou're not killing people, right, but

(15:22):
directly right, he hasn't. Theway that he murdered his father was that
type. And it's like documented thatstrangulation is one of the more closely like,
like the most intimate forms of murderbecause you have to be right there
next to that person. You're physicallydoing it with your hands. But he

(15:43):
used a rope, so that's interesting. I guess he's a young kid,
so it would be easier to usea rope than his bare hands. But
yeah, I think I don't know, it's like that idea of like the
unreliable narrator, right, like howcan we trust that this has been his
only murder when he's infamously known,he came out in front of those Dutch

(16:08):
sailors and just seeing him made themscram Like he brings this era or air
air air of fear and terror tothose who know him. He is infamously
known as black Beard, so it'sinteresting to see that he's actually like,

(16:30):
deep down, there's a part ofhim that's just a scared little boy who
was probably doing something to doing whathe thought was the only way to save
his family, getting rid of thisloser dad who was like a fucking asshole,
and it makes him like super sympathetic. And the fact that he's very
vulnerable in that bathtub with Steed isjust like you see the humanity in him,

(16:55):
like the part of him that's flawedand vulnerable instead of like this famous
buccaneer or whatever. And I feellike him and Steed are really bonding,
like when they were learning how towhen he was teaching Steed how to spar
They're like they were really bonding andlike laughing and learning from each other.

(17:17):
Well, no, Steve was learningfrom Blackbeard and Izzy. They cut to
Izzy and Izzy was like, sosad. Yeah, he's like in pain
with how upset he is with this. Yeah, like he is not happy
in this relationship that they have anymore. And it's very obvious that Blackbeard has
a special relationship with Steed and ishe has a problem with it, and

(17:38):
so he brings this up with hiscrew and they're like, that's not fair.
You can't have a pet, youknow. Is apparently had a dog
that he had to put down tojoin the crew. Poor fang. That's
so sad. Yeah, but thatkind of shows like how black Beard has

(18:00):
changed from don't They also comment earlierin the episode like this is the most
emotionally stable we've seen him. Myeah, yeah, when he was telling
his story. Yeah, so youcan tell that being on this ship is
definitely making black Beard softer in away and it's really fucking easy up,
which drives him to challenge Steed toa duel where the loser gets vanished.

(18:26):
And in any sane world, itwould be Steed who would be riding off
into the sunset. Yeah, gettinghit in the head with a sandwich.
Well, I would think that he'dprobably just get killed in the duel.
Oh yeah, that would have beenyeah no, in a realistic kind of
way. Yeah, but he survivesbecause he learned from black Beard how to
survive this. Yep, and apparentlyeverybody knows the rules of a duel except

(18:52):
for Steed. Let's just recap thoserules real quick. Yeah. I love
that this concept of the cat asbeing incredibly scary comes back. We John
Is as a cat is just sofucking adorable. This big big man dressed

(19:15):
up as a geeky cat. Ilike the lure that they have established in
this show and didn't at the endof the previous episode when they had the
Badminton guy didn't even refer to himas like the cat pirates or something.
I don't remember, because they havethe cat flag. They do have that
cat flag. Let's see. Ilove how I invested the crew was in

(19:40):
like Blackbeard's compliments at the end ofthe end of their show. Oh yeah,
because his praise is high praise. He is the king of pirates,
you know. So if he likesthe way you sing, oh my god,
that's like Lady Gaga saying you singwell or something. You know what
I mean. He's like the Beyonceof pirates, so he was They were

(20:04):
really excited to like show off theirfuckery to them because he did a really
good job. Like when he wasshowing off, he fucked everybody up.
They were really scared, and sothey were like, we kind of get
it right, the cannibalism and shit. Yeah, and they did really tap
into his fear with that Kraken storyline. Yeah, they weren't intending to scare

(20:26):
him, they were going for thetheir their guest audience. Yeah. I
just love that, Like they're obviouslytrying to be scary the whole time,
but it's just kind of like weirdand intriguing. It's like that was a
choice. Yeah, you dressed upas a big cat. Are they supposed
to be the same person when thewhen Jim is pulling out sausages behind a

(20:52):
curtain, so it looks like they'redismembering somebody, but it's clearly just like
meats from the met Seller And Idon't know, it's interesting and just the
fact that Steve views it very muchas performance and he's talking about like hitting
his cues and stuff. Yeah,it's theater. He is, like,

(21:15):
I think this is like a pirate'shomage to theater and they're learning Shakespeare,
which would be I don't know ifit would be like a semi contemporary artist
at that point. I don't think. So they can like at least maybe
two hundred years old. Uh yeah, roughly. I guess he would have
died about one hundred years before.Yeah, so that's still pretty recent compared

(21:38):
to our timeline, like Shakespeare nowto us. Yeah, so I think
that's pretty edgy for them to bequoting Shakespeare. Are we good? Do
you want to talk some more? That's all I had. Oh. I
wrote down that there's some interesting lightingin it, kind of kind of theatrical,
not just when they're doing the theaterpart, just like there's just ways

(22:00):
they were sitting with like the lightcoming down through the grid above them,
so when he was walking in totalk about to their company. Yeah.
I also wrote down roach sandwich, which is just the funny thing to write.
But another thing that I thought wasfunny was when they were at their
company meeting, they were spitballing ideasand all of a sudden they're like,

(22:23):
there's this foul odor that smells likedeath, and it's just Lucius in his
finger. That's like the reveal ofthe finger. And it was so gross
that that second storyline was so good. The finger, I guess it was,
was it? Yeah, that wouldbe like the b plot, right,

(22:45):
Yeah, it was good. I'mglad it wasn't like one of his
index fingers or something they needs torite. That wasn't index finger. Thought
it was that was an index finger. It was. It was an index
finger. That's why they were worried. Yeah, it was an index finger.
And I'm pretty sure he's a leftybecause a lot of artists are lefties.
Well, I hope that works outfor Yeah, I don't know,

(23:07):
he'll have to struggle through it.But even even without a finger, I
feel like he's probably pretty good atdoing his thing. My favorite stories of
artists are the ones who continue theirwork even after losing a limb or a
sense. So I hope he comesback even more, like driven to his
artistic endeavors with drawing penises. Yeah, they're beautiful the way he renders them

(23:33):
anyway. Astoral Queen, who wasthe standout character in the episode? Who's
your standout character in this episode?I chose mister Lucius himself. You chose
Lucius. Yes, I chose Blackbeard. Nice. Yeah, I mean I've
already talked a lot about Lucius andwhat he went through. Yeah, fact

(23:56):
he really made that show of workby cutting his finger, the fact that
he was so sweaty and upset andhe looked he like I believe that he
has a severe infection. And alsojust like every episode seems like Lucius is
getting the shit into something, sohe's due for some recognition. Yeah,

(24:21):
what do you got, black Beard? I got black Beard for his character
growth and throwing away the idea ofkilling Steed Bonnet altogether and admitting that he's
no longer interested in doing that becausehe's like a different person now. And
I like that character growth yep.And the I don't know, he just
seemed really human in that bathtub, like scared, alone, vulnerable, talking

(24:45):
about how he doesn't have any friendsand nobody likes him. Like, God,
don't we all feel like that sometimes, even though we have hundreds of
people around us that tell us likewe're good people and we're we're enough,
Like sometimes like you just don't believeit. And I really enjoyed the fact
that they showed somebody feeling that, you know, He's like all these accolades

(25:07):
and these accomplishments, but he stillfeels like, you know, I'm not
a good person and he might notbe, but I like that he has
somebody who sees the good in him. Yeah, seems like Steve is the
one person who is seeing the realHymn and not just the facade of black
Beard, and he's recognizing that. All right, Lucius and black Beard,

(25:30):
your awards are being shipped to you. That wraps up the main part of
the episode. We're going to gointo the spoiler section and talk some spoilers.
So if you don't want to bea part of that, then you
are banished from the ship and here'syour sandwich and we'll see you next time
when we cover episode seven. Thisis happening stereo stylist in this group race

(25:56):
for intact spoiler ahead. If youhaven't seen the whole series, now is
the time to say goodbye. Rememberyou can contact us at Spacingoutpod at gmail
dot com, find us on socialmedia, share your thoughts and be a
part of the discussion. Spoilers infive four three two one spoilers got anything

(26:22):
in particular. I am just sointo this budding romance. Ah, it's
just so like tender and kind andslow, like it's a simmering kind of
like warmth to it. Like atfirst glance, you'll miss it. You'll
just be like, oh, they'recool, they're great buddies, you know.

(26:44):
And I think that's part of likeour heteronormative lens, where we don't
see that kind of relationship developing andin the same way we would see it
if this was a man and awoman right having these interactions. So poop
on me for not seeing it thefirst time, and I'm very like thankful
that I get to see it ata second time because it's like so wonderfully

(27:08):
beautiful and elegant and romantic in away that we don't see in like mainstream
media for queer characters. You know, usually like the romance is a tragedy,
somebody dies or gets aids or youknow, something terrible happens where they

(27:30):
can't like be together and they haveto go back to their normal life pretending
to be straight or something. SoI'm happy that this is like positive queer
representation that's like slow moving too, because we don't see a lot of courtship
in film or shows where it's likeyou start with a glance, with a

(27:52):
lingering touch, with the vulnerability andthe like opening yourself up to the other
person, and they're doing a greatjob of doing that. I think this
is why this show is so popularamongst the LGBTQIA plus community, because it's
like giving us so much. It'sfeeding us so much, and we're so

(28:18):
hungry for it, like and nobodygives us this. I mean, Ryan
Murphy tries, but uh, it'sso white. This one's like queer and
brown and black, and and it'slike this energy of like I don't know,
it's just like it's got like thisstrong queer energy. Next episode,

(28:41):
we're gonna see Olawande and Jim andtheir relationship and they're complicated too, because
Jim won't give Olowande a real shotfor quite a while, and so Olawande's
like also really shy and won't belike, oh, Jim, I kind
of like you. So and thenthey have a three like a polyamorous relationship

(29:07):
later on in the show that theydon't really highlight too much, but it's
definitely present. I wish they woulddevelop the their third or the I forget
her name, she's in the secondseason. Oh yeah, the she's like
a rogue. You're talking about thecaptain the No, that's another one though.
No, there's like a different onethat Jim has a relationship with.

(29:32):
Oh yeah, I don't remember theirpoly Yeah, I'm thinking like now because
Izzy's tortured, soul is out ofthe way of this romance. I'm like,
I don't remember much of the restof the season. Like, I
remember the finale fairly well. Ithink when Steed is back at home and
he abandons Blackbeard. Yeah, Iremember that. I know the next episode
is a lot to do with Jimin their backstory. Mm hmm. Yeah,

(29:56):
other than like because I worked onthe synopsis for the next pot cast,
But other than that, Like,I don't remember a whole lot,
So I'm kind of excited to explorethese next few episodes. Yeah. One
thing I thought was interesting, It'slike, so much of this first season
is is he trying to get ridof Steed? And I think when we
get to season two, is heis trying to get Steed back because black

(30:17):
Beard has just gone so far theopposite direction, probably the normal direction that
he's been only like cranked up toeleven. Yeah, like back to being
mentally unstable as he wants that versionof Blackbeard back, But then I think
it goes too far and he's like, I got we got to address this
whole Steed issue. Well, healmost dies because black Beard is so like

(30:38):
bitter Bitter Boots. It's terrible. But honestly, you kind of feel for
black Beard because Steed did him reallydirty the way he did his wife dirty.
But his wife at least thrived.A widowed woman will thrive in this
time period because before marriage it's fuckinghorrible. A bit during marriage, you'd

(31:00):
be lucky if you got hooked upwith a good guy. And then widowship
is when you get to be yourselfin this time period and sometimes still till
today, like depending on your cultureand what your ideologies are. But yeah,
she's thriving. I'm really excited tosee that because I love her and

(31:22):
Eric from Tim and Eric awesome job. Here's that show. Yeah, he's
the painting instructor that she's fucking onthe side. So I don't know.
But other than that, I don'tgot any spoilers. We can wrap it
up and we will wrap it up. So yeah, next episode is this
is happening talk about Orange or sorry, Jim in the Orange Tree, Orange

(31:48):
in the gym Tree. Thanks forsailing on the revenge and remember to avoid
all your vital organs when getting stabbed. Yeah, that's a good idea.
Thank you for spacing out with Bedand Jason, and you can help us
out by subscribing and leaving a positiverating or review. Next time we will
cover our flag means Death Season one, episode seven. This is happening.

(32:12):
We hope you will join us Spaceynow with b B and Jason. What
are you making a new theme songfor us? Is that we already have
a theme song. We're not goingto change it in the middle of a
season. You're making a compelling argument. You like my song. Yep,

(32:34):
we'll field tested, We'll feel tested. Okay,
