spoiling anything past this episode, whichis Our Flag Means Death, Season one,
episode five, The Best Revenge IsDressing Well. This originally aired on
March tenth, twenty twenty two.Written by John Mahone, directed by Fernando
free Us. In this episode,Blackbeard trained Steed's crew to become better pirates
while Steve teaches Ed about high society. They crash a high society party hosted
(01:04):
by French aristocrats. Ed is initiallysuccessful at mingling with the aristocrats, but
is later ridiculed. Steve defends himby proposing that the party guests play a
game, during which Steve reveals allthe guest secrets, turning the party into
a brawl. Aluande and Frenchy scamthe guest with a pyramid scheme and share
their earnings with the African servants ofthe Aristocrats. Meanwhile, Admiral Chauncey Badminton,
(01:27):
Nigel's twin brother, convinces King Georgeto lend him the full force of
the English Navy to avenge his brother'smurder. Vibe check Did we like the
episode overall? How does it standthe test of time? That's the storyline?
What did we think of it?I love this episode. I think
(01:47):
this is definitely a fan favorite.Yeah, it's just fun to see Blackbeard
out of his element. Yeah,it's like multiple fish out of water scenarios
with Steve in the beginning and thenBlackbeard at the party. So yeah,
it's a lot of fun. Ihighly recommend it. When I think of
like the memorable episodes of the show, I think like season one, I
think of the beginning, the end, and then this episode. Yeah,
(02:13):
trivia time, what facts could weuncover for the best revenge is dressing well
all right, Trivia, So reeStarby and Kristin Shall. We're both on
the two thousand and seven show Flightof the Concords. Who's re starby that
is Steve Bonnett. Oh oh,I didn't know, just Steve. Okay,
(02:34):
he wasn't Flight of the Concords. He was the band manager. He
was so good in that present.Yeah that is. If you somehow missed
that show, like, you shouldcheck it out for sure. Also directed
four episodes of that series, andKristin Shall also appeared in Takawatit's show What
We Do in the Shadows. Yeah, I forget that he did that show
(02:55):
because it's like that was a moviefirst, right, then it turned into
a show that's still running on ThinkEffects. Yeah, got a lot of
shows. They're all very different.Yeah, I think at one point before
the show was canceled spoiler alert,he had like four shows concurrently running while
(03:15):
he's off directing Marvel Movies and such. Creator David Jenkins revealed that it was
Izzy who reluctantly put the little bowsin Blackbeard's beard, but this scene was
cut for time. Oh that's fun. Then Izzy's reaction to walking in on
Lucius and Black Pete having sex.The Ooh Daddy scene was improvised by Conn
O'Neill, and that's easy. Yes, he was so creepy in that.
(03:38):
That was so creepy. He madeit unnecessarily creepy. Right, it's like
an extended like it was cut fortime because he was taking up so much
time going ooh daddy. Who wasso awful? There's been a lot of
I've be't mentioned them all, butthere's a lot of notes. So like,
(04:00):
various scenes are improvised, so itsounds like they have a lot of
fun coming up with stuff on theside Deep Sea Dive. Let's break down
some of our thoughts on the episode. You can share your thoughts with us
through email or social media. Wemay use your comments on an upcoming episode.
(04:20):
What is up? Is he's assagainst I forget his name, I
know his Lucius Lucius? Yeah?Is he mad because he's able to live
his life out loud? I meanmaybe? I think it's also just like,
is he is really annoyed that, like these guys are just having a
good time in general? Yeah,he sees it as like they have conquered
(04:44):
the revenge and the crew, andlike those guys should be their servants basically,
right, we're dead outright, Yeah, and so the fact that they're
still living and thriving, even enjoyinglife seems to really get up his butt
in a bad way, in asexy, kind of shady way. I
had a random question that I justI feel like it's confused me in the
(05:09):
show, like what has happened toBlackbeard's ship, because they seem to have
gone aboard the Revenge and his shiphasn't been around. I don't think they
had a ship. They weren't onthat island. No, they were on
a ship, because they don't thinkit was their ship. Though. I
don't think black Beard had a goodship. He had a ship like with
the flag and stuff, because that'show they revealed it was black Beard.
Yeah, and then they told himto follow the Revenge and maybe they're like
(05:31):
shadowing him or they went to thepirate bay and stayed there because the Revenge
is like known to be a superiorship. So they probably ditched the last
ship because it was a piece ofcrap, decided to commandeer this one become
a gentleman pirate. Yeah, that'sa good question, and that's a plot
hole definitely in the show that Ican't think of what happened to his ship.
(05:57):
But if I found a nicer ship, I would definitely abandon ship and
just go with the new one,the nicer one with the bookshelves, the
chandeliers. Yeah, we'll see ifit turns back up or something. Yeah.
So this episode started off very violent. Oh yeah, Oh my god.
When they they cut to the Rflag means death logo, it was
(06:18):
like carved into a man. Iwas like, Oho, it looks so
real too, so visceral. Youwere just saying how you loved how they
incorporated the title into the They really, yeah, they really incorporated the title
into what was happening currently. Ilike how they before they went up there,
(06:39):
they're like, Okay, you guys, the crew of the Revenge,
you're just here to watch. Youare not a real pirate, And they're
like, I think we're real pirates. I beg to differ. But then
when you see the shit that's happeningon the ship that's being invaded, you
can definitely tell that this is different. Yeah, limbs are being lost,
(07:01):
people are being lit on fire. It's scary, and Steve's trying to like
take note. Yeah, he's tryingto take it all in to learn from
it and also just being horrified byit. Yeah, being traumatized, but
in a way that's like helpful andtraumatizing Lucious in the meantime, Poor Lucious,
(07:23):
that man is a soft boy.He shouldn't be there. Both of
them really shouldn't be there. Andthen when he was looting the books and
he's like, I'm putting the booksI already read back in, so it's
like a library systuff. Ste he'sdoing like extra work to make that he's
(07:46):
bringing books in, Like, holdon, I already read these books,
let me bring them. And thefact that there's a ship that they somehow
found that has books and a fullset well almost a full set of silverware,
and they're like, we're sorry,we couldn't accommodate you. And that's
(08:07):
when Blackbeard learns about passive aggression.Yeah, what does he call it?
Like massive aggression, which is somethinghe definitely has. Yeah, he's like
his words they sounded nice, butthey heard. And then we get a
little peek into Blackbeard's origins as achild with his mother being a maid.
(08:33):
Yeah, showing him this nice pieceof fabric which happens to be silk,
and he seems to be carrying itaround still as an adult man, like
this thing that he can't reach. He's always been told you'll never be this.
Yeah, and we've seen like himkind of react to fabric already in
the show, Like that's kind ofwhat it intrigues him about Steed a little
(08:56):
bit when he's exploring his stuff andfinds fine fabrics. Yeah, and the
invitation to this fancy party, likeone of the things that Steed said was
going to be there was fashion fashion, and he's like, well, I
gotta go, but I don't meanI could care less, but we should
go. I wish we could haveseen them getting ready. Yeah, I'm
(09:18):
wondering how did they select Alandi andFrenchy to be there as well? Well,
it sounds like Frenchie's been in thatscene and he obviously brought the invitation,
so it'd be rude not to invitehim and all Awandi. I think
Steed likes him, wants him around, and I'm glad they brought they came
because they made the whole at likethe whole party like that more interesting.
(09:43):
Oh yeah, they were like doingtheir own pirate gig, their fancy version.
Yeah, they were inventing the firstpyramid scheme, right, which is
literally about a pyramid. Yeah, all my money's tied up in a pyramid.
And also and I'm gonna get themoney out, but I need an
investment. There's also like a versionof the Nigerian Prince scheme as well.
(10:07):
Yeah, like it birth the Pyramidscheme, Birth the Nigerian Prince scheme,
And I do like that. Thethey didn't veer away talking about the differences
between these black men who were supposedlyof high ranking and status versus like these
(10:30):
servants that these white people can't getto like behave or something. They're like,
oh, you are the most likewell spoken black person I've ever met.
Or African is what they called them. Yeah, they're African from Egypt
in this scenario. So they're like, oh, yeah, totally. They're
like, I don't know. It'svery interesting to see that because it's like
(10:54):
in most shows, we don't want, we don't have this diversity. It's
usually just a bunch of white peopleplaying pirates, like and if there is
a brown or black person, wedon't talk about the national or international slave
trade that's happening throughout the world. It's not something that's like even looked at,
(11:18):
even though it's definitely part of theworld and especially part of like when
you think about the ocean, likehow many I don't know what percentage of
ships are are going to be transportinglike slaves, but they're definitely there and
it's happening, and I like thatthey're not like shining away from it.
(11:41):
And I like that they gave likethe servants on the ship freedom and riches.
I thought that was pretty good.I don't know, it's fantasy,
so I love that, you know, people can have happy fantasies about brown
and black people. It's nice cause, like I'm trying to think of another
pirate show that has like a prominentblack or brown character that acknowledges the inequity
(12:07):
of their role and position in theworld, and I can't think of any.
Yeah, I'd say, I mean, I watched what was it called
Black Sales, and that show didbring up like the slave trade that was
going on, and there was therewas a black man on the island of
Nassau, so like it touched onit. It wasn't like it wasn't fun
to like see these slave trade happening. It was, yeah, expect you
(12:31):
know, but I'm like, I'mglad they didn't ignore it, and they
they brought it into the storyline andhad the pirates like trying to free and
like team up with these slaves toaccomplish what they wanted. Right, I
don't know. I just can't believewe went through, like I don't know,
like thirteen different movies with the Piratesof the Caribbean franchise and they never
(12:56):
thought about like including any like dropof that. No, that's Disney,
right, Yeah, they went verywhitewashed, very fun and games the pirates,
Yeah, and you know they encounternatives and stuff, but it's it's
never presented in such a dark way. I mean, it's not presented in
(13:16):
a dark truth way in this scenarioeither, but it's just a fact,
like, hey, this happens, this is here, we are in we
are not equal, and so weacknowledge that that's like something that is part
of our world and it's not likepretend We're like we're pretending here because it's
(13:39):
obviously a fantasy, but it's afantasy that's kind of rooted in reality in
a way where we can see likethe inequities like the high class society and
the servant class and the pirate class, and the differences in conduct and some
it's just really interesting that that wesee at play here. And I love
(14:01):
the exploitation of the rich. Ohyeah, that's my favorite part, I
swear. And it's interesting that likeBlackbeard is so enamored with it, like
he's like, put this, thesepeople and their experiences up on a pedestal,
and he wants to be part ofit. He's like, I'm an
(14:22):
accountant because he's like, what's themost boring job? I guess yeah,
because he was told that, youknow, he couldn't he couldn't have this,
He wasn't born into it. OnlyGod can give it to you.
Life's not fair like that, andI think that has driven a lot of
him like pillaging, villaging, acquiringriches. But he's still not accepted by
(14:43):
the rich. Well it seems likehe has no idea who the rich are.
And Steed tries to warn him,He's like, you're these people are
really fickle. They're not You're you'renot going to like them, and you're
not gonna like you you're gonna havea hard time winning them over. And
he's pretty successful in the beginning, but then he uses the wrong fucking silverware
(15:07):
and they're on him like hounds, and it's like, it's so sad when
he leaves and he's like, I'mdone, let's go home, and they're
like, what did they do toyou? You tell us what they did
French. She's like, oh,there's such dicks about the spoons. Yeah,
French, she knows. I don'tknow, it's just yeah. But
I love that Steed is equipped inthis situation to go like handle this for
(15:31):
him. Yeah. He gets acouple of pointers from the servants and there
and he's like, okay, youall, let's play a game and if
I win, I win, andif I don't, well then y'all lose
anyway regardless. And it quickly devolvesso beautifully. Yep. He just annihilates
them with fact with facts, yep, Like oh, uh, don't you
(15:56):
have a daughter out of wedlock? And is it her name like Renee or
something? And they're like, ohmy god, your daughter's were day and
the lady runs out crying. Ithink she was probably the safest person in
the room after that right, becauseeverybody else like there was somebody throwing up
and vomiting. I was like theywere crying and things lit on fire.
(16:19):
We find out that the two mainrich people were actually related. They're like
products of incest or there they areincest, they're not product. Well you
never know. With the rich. It's hard to tell. All that pasty
white makeup. Oh my god, that makeup was terrible. And you know
(16:40):
back then that makeup was made outof like lead, so it was making
their skin worse, making their brainsworse. Yeah, it's lead. It
was like poisonous. It was eatingaway at their skin and then they would
need more makeup to cover it up. Crazy. So thing is adorable in
this epen with his cheekbones. Hegiggled and he's like, no, well
(17:03):
sometimes he was so adorable. Andthen he's getting drawn by Lucius in the
Captain's quarters and it's kind of likevery Titanic esque where he's like laying their
nude, yeah, and Lucius isdrawing him, and then they cut to
(17:25):
Izzy coming in being upset, andthen you see what Lucius is actually drawing
and it's just fans penis. Yes, very good drawing of a penis,
but you were expecting to see likea whole figure, right, Yeah,
so it was really funny. Youlaughed pretty hard when you saw that.
(17:48):
I didn't remember that because also Idon't know his name. The other guy
in the room, the beard, the guy that was snapping while they were
doing it earlier. Oh, he'sa little John or something like that.
We John, yeah, John.Even he was commenting before you could see
(18:08):
the what he was sketching. He'scoming like, oh, you really captured
his likeness. Yeah. And thenlater is he thinks he's gonna hold that
over. Lucia's like to force himto do his bidding, like he's gonna
reveal that he was drawing faing nudeand the black pizza is like, yeah,
he's drawn all of us. It'slike a thing he does here.
I love that dynamic that like ishe obviously doesn't understand that this is like
(18:33):
a very loving and open space andit's so hard for him to conceptualize this
or understand it like that, there'sthis guy and his only job is to
write shit down and draw things.Yes, and it surely and then and
then like on his time off,he's off canoodling and you know, doing
(18:56):
whatever other sexual things with other pirateson the ship in next to the carrots
or whatever, and he's like, what the fuck, how dare you?
I did so, I'm gonna comeup with the worst job to do for
you to do, because your wholeexistence makes no sense to me, and
your joy gives me anger, andI would hate to be on that little
(19:21):
swing set trying to clean off barnecules. Like immediately he's like, can you
help me out? He's like,I'm supposed to watch you and he's like,
oh, well, let me thinkof a different way out. He's
very clever, lucious. I thinkthat's like a testimony to his cleverness.
Is anything else not? Really?I think this episode was really good.
(19:44):
It wasn't super complicated or anything.I like at the end where Blackbeard was
reflecting probably on the end of thenight and how he still couldn't fit in
and he was thinking about his momand that fine piece of silk, and
Steve comes in and he's like,oh, like, that's a really nice
(20:06):
fabric you have there, and helike puts it in his pocket and he
tells him he wears nice things well, And I thought that was really nice.
Like that's that's like probably helping himfeel better about the way the night
ended. Yeah, sorry, Idon't know. It just felt like nice,
like I want somebody to tell me, like I wear nice things well
(20:26):
after I feel like I can't fitinto this place where I'll never fit in.
And it did look nice, likehe shouldn't hide that, right,
that part of himself needs to beon display, and Steed is helping him
do that to some degree, andthat was cool. And then there was
like a little after credit scene kindof thing. Yeah, it's kind of
(20:48):
a soaproper plot twist a twin brother, Yeah, coming out for revenge and
I like that. They pull outthe cat flag yes, and it's covered
in blood and he's like, whyis it all bloody and he's like,
those that is the blood of ourcomrades. It was a Russian I don't
(21:08):
know, the cat flag. Yeah, and the king looks very keenly I
guess. I like how historically likeaccurate. A lot of this is like
sometimes you'll be like, oh,that's a crocshoe, but for the most
part, like the costuming and thedecorative, like the decoration on set is
(21:32):
immaculate. That table setting with allthat silverware and those candle oberas and everything,
Like, wow, I don't know, I love that, Like that's
that helps with immersion, you know, like feeling totally immersed in this world
and believing these characters. Yeah,it also like it really helps to make
sharp contrast between how we've seen thepirates and how they're living through all these
(21:56):
people, their white faces and theway they're like like a fish eye camera
like going in on them at first. Yeah, props to the props department.
Astral Queen? Who was the standoutcharacter in the episode? Are you
ready for the Astral Queen? Yeah? Who won this party? Steed?
(22:19):
Motherfucking bonnet. That's the one. That's the one I'm voting for. Who
are you thinking, Frenchie? Iwas between Steed and Frenchie. If you're
picking Steve, might as well pickFrenchie. Yeah. She did choose him
for us scamming all those rich whitefolks with Aluwandi and then donating all their
(22:41):
winnings to the servants. I thinkthat was all Luwandi, was it?
Yeah, he said he was investingit back. So you could pick both
of them as a team, becausethey made a really good team. And
there's no rules for astral Queen.Well, I give it to whoever decided
to donate it. Sure it wasall the way, all right, Well,
(23:02):
tell us why you're picking Steed becausehe viscerated those rich white people and
he uplifted black Beard in a way. And then he's also still on a
learning journey himself where he's like inawe of like this piracy, this violence
that he can be a part of. So I think he was there's character
gross, but then there was alsolike showing that he's capable of doing his
(23:26):
own sort of aviscerating in his world, like in the world of rich,
fine people, Steed Bonnet can holdhis own. Yeah. I mean there
was a really good obvious contrast ofthe pirate situation in the beginning that Steed
is definitely not well equipped for andblack Beard is, and then vice versa
(23:47):
at the party. So that wrapsup our main coverage of this episode.
We're going to go into the spoilersection, So if you don't want to
be spoiled by anything that come inthe series, now is the time to
disembark from the ship and we willbe back next time to discuss the episode.
The Art of Fuckery they had agood time with the sensors on that
one. Right, well, goodthing they're on HBO. Let's puteo Stylus
(24:11):

whole series, now is the timeto say goodbye. Remember you can contact

(24:37):
two one spoiler time that moon withscene with him with Steed and Blackbeard having
that intimate moment. It was soromantic and so beautiful. The second time
around, when you see it withthe eyes of a person who knows these
two are destined for each other, you see the plant of love, that
(25:00):
seed beginning to sprout and take rootin a very tender, loving way.
Yeah, because at the end oflast episode we know that Blackbeard his plan
is to kill Steed and take hisown death and take Steed's life basically,
and that's what a lot of thistraining has been for. But we see
(25:22):
now like Steed is the one personwho is showing that he cares for him,
Yeah, and the one person makinghim feel good about his fine fabrics.
I just think it's so special thatSteed sees Blackbeard's like true self in
a way. There's something about himthat's soft and tender and fine, like
(25:44):
wanting for more that's not just likebeating guys up and being merciless and killing
machines, and Steed like tempers thatin him, and I just I'm really
excited to like just see this againthrough this lens of like these two are
meant for each other. It's verybeautiful and romantic. And the music was
(26:07):
so good too, Like when youmentioned the music last episode, I didn't
notice it, so I made noteto like notice it this time, to
like listen when these two are togetherand alone, what does it sound like?
And the music composition is so likebeautiful that they're they're they're really painting
(26:27):
a picture of these two men inlove in this like dangerous world that they
live in. And I don't know, like what it was like for people
who for queer people in that time. I'm sure it wasn't easy. It's
not easy now, why would itbe in the seventeen hundreds or whatever year
it is here, So I don'tknow. It's interesting, and I'm excited
(26:52):
to see it. I was sadthat this episode didn't have a lot of
Jim. No, I don't thinkthere was any gym. There wasn't Jim
there, and from the Swede wasmissing, there was a lot of the
crew that we weren't seeing. Yeah, I don't remember what the art of
fuckery is. Fuckery is like apirate term, right, Yeah, it
was a term that Blackbeard uses aslike he called it like his theater of
(27:18):
horror or something like that. Ohyeah, I remember now, I remember.
I remember it's and then Steed takesit to a real theater, very
theatrical. I'm excited. I lovethe show. I feel like there's not
one episode that's bad. No,and I don't fully remember what's going to
happen the rest of the season.I'm sure that let's a guy's name Badminton.
(27:41):
I'm sure he's coming into He's theworst. He's worse than the other
guy. I hate him so much. He's such a little bitch. He's
like, oh, you kill mybrother, and he's like, I didn't
really actually kill him, it wasan accident. He's like, I don't
give a fuck. It's awful. No, he's the worst bad guy.
I like the second season Bad GuyBetter where it's the Pirate Queen and then
(28:07):
this weird guy with a fake nosethat's way funner. Yeah, and I
know, is he he gets kickedout of the crew or something. He
leaves and then Spanish shack, you'llbe back. So yeah, well no,
he is. He's like a tumultuouscharacter because he's in love with black
Beard too, so he's like torturedabout like how black Beard is moving on
(28:33):
because I think that the relationship thatblack Beard and Izzy had was super toxic.
We never see that relationship and whatit was. We can only see
the aftermath of it in the series. And you can tell is he still
holding a candle for black Beard? And you can kind of tell like he's
holding it together for black Beard. He's tolerating it all for black Beard because
(28:57):
he's not equipped to be here.This isn't his scene. He's like a
real tough guy and he doesn't havetime for all this like bullshit, all
this soft boy like flowery baby shit. The black Beard's kind of wanting to
experience and I feel like he wantstough leather wearing black Beard. Yeah.
(29:18):
The daddy, oh daddy, No, he really hates everything they do with
Steed Bonnet. So I really wishwe would have seen the scene of him
like kind of what's the word I'mlooking for, surrendering and putting the little
bows on his beard and saying,Okay, you may go, you have
(29:41):
my blessing. But it's reluctant becauseI'm sure that's how it played out.
I wish there was like deleted scenessomewhere where we could watch him. I'm
sure there is, like probably onDVD or something. Can you own the
show on DVD? Oh no,I have to look. I feel like
I want to own it on Bluray or when the Internet crashes and we
(30:02):
don't have access to the streaming servicesanymore. But I'd love to see that
scene just because I want to knowwhat it is. I don't want it
to go off of my imagination.I would love to see how Easy plays
left. Yeah, I don't seeany note about a home release or physical
release. Might look on like YouTubeor something, see if they've put up
(30:22):
bleeded scenes or loopers. Yeah, but I feel like it's kind of like
a tragic triangle of love there, because is he's like completely cut off from
the triangle and now it's just betweenSpeed and Blackbeard, and Izzy just has
to witness like potentially the love ofhis life fall in love with a Ninnie.
(30:45):
But I think he's like smart enoughto think to know, like this
is what Blackbeard wants and he wantsto see him have, so he lets
him. He go to some degree. I feel like he holds on to
him still, even to the death. I think that wraps it up.
Then, all right, So we'llbe back next time for the Art of
Fuckery. And thanks for sailing onthe Revenge, remember dining his pageantry.
