(00:42):
this episode, which is Our FlagMeans Death Season two, Episode five,
The Curse of the Seafiring Life. This originally aired on October twelfth, twenty
twenty three, Written by John Mahoneand Simone Nathan and directed by Andrew Deyong.
In this episode, Ed is allowedback on the Revenge on probation and
works through some of his past withLucius and fang Steed seeks to improve his

(01:07):
pirrating skills with Izzy's help as partof which the pirates raid a ship whose
crew have been already murdered, returningwith only one significant item of treasure,
a new suit for Steed. Thecrew are convinced that this suit is cursed,
and Steed is ultimately forced a partwith it. Ed receives a few
fishing lessons from Fang and lessons aboutlife as well, and Lucius proposes to
Black Pete. At the end ofthe day, Ed and Steed Sherry Heart

(01:30):
DeHeart on the deck in the moonlight, and it is discovered that Frenchie has
a penot allergy, but no onetakes it seriously because they think it's a
curse. I'll never know. Fivecheck. Did we like the episode overall?
How does it stand the test oftime? I like this episode.
It's fun. It's like we're workingour way back to the old ways.

(01:53):
Yeah, it's you mentioned this beforewe started recording, Like it's almost like
filler, but it's not really,but it's a little more like, I
guess, like a whimsical pause fromlike all the plot moving forward as much.
Yeah, like this, this isa good episode for us to see
the crew finally finding harmony again.Yeah, so I do like that and

(02:16):
we process some trauma from a fewcharacters. So, yeah, trivia time.
What facts could we uncover for theCurse of the Seafaring Life? All
right, trivia? I'm going todo something very unconventional and maybe illegal in
terms of podcasts. Why why illegal? So I don't have any trivia for

(02:39):
this episode. But a couple episodesago, when we had that Mermaid scene
and I said, I also saidI didn't have any trivia for that episode.
Well I went back and I foundsome for it. Oh, so
there's trivia from a previous episode.Yeah, so we might find trivia for
this episode next week. Yes,but this is a taboo in the podcasting

(03:02):
room, breaking all of our rules. Okay, So no trivia for the
Curse of the Seafaring Life, butsome trivia for the Mermaid sequence. So,
first of all, Season one wasshot in Los Angeles, but production
for season two relocated to New Zealand. And. This was partially because they
wanted to take advantage of New Zealand'snatural beaches and ocean views, and particularly

(03:25):
for the scene where Blackbeard plunges offof the cliff when he's in the gravy
basket. Yeah, that scenery,Like I said during in that episode.
I remember saying that this show isjust beautiful, and I think it's New
Zealand that's giving itself to that environment. So yeah, that makes that tracks.

(03:45):
Yeah, and I know they theyshoot a lot of the show on
what's called the Volume, which isthat giant led screen that they made for
the Mandalorian that has all the backroom backgrounds pre rendered and stuff. So
I believe they've been building those likearound the world, So I think that's
why they were able to move tothe New Zealand. So the actual ocean

(04:06):
scenes were shot in an enormous indoortank, and the fact that Avatar two
had shot there meant that there wasa lot of crew available with underwater experience.
So Steed's Merman tail is real.Is originally intended to be done with
the effects, but costume designer GypsyTaylor fought for the idea of her team
building a practical tail, and RhysDarby was on board with the idea.

(04:28):
He was a good swimmer from histime in the New Zealand Army and so
he learned how to swim with amono fin. That's cool. Yeah,
I like that he was down.I like that He's like, Oh,
I can do it, Let's doit. I'm down. Yeap. So
Taylor designed Steed's tail to resemble agoldfish, and despite trying to keep the
tail light for practical reasons, itended up being heavier than expected. And

(04:50):
one culprit was the glitter that addedabout five kilograms, just eleven pounds of
weight. What just for eleven poundsof glitter? Yes, that is one
game necessary. It's necessary glitter. So with the costume and makeup and prosthetics

(05:14):
a restar, we couldn't walk inthe costume and had to be escorted around
in a wheelchair. That's gorgeous. There's also some photos of him getting the
tail applied and stuff, and it'sreally cool to see deep sea dive.
Let's break down some of our thoughtson the episode. You can share your
thoughts with us through email or socialmedia. We may use your comments on

(05:38):
an upcoming episode. All right,So back to this episode. You're no
Mermaid exactly, all right? Sonow we fast forward to the crew of
the Revenge Part three. How manyrenditions of this fucking crew have we had
by now? At least two?You mean, like with who's in charge?

(06:00):
Yeah? Like We've had Steed incharge, We've had black Beard in
charge, We've had is Busy incharge. So that's three versions and now
we're back to square one. Andfor like thirty seconds we had all lu
Wan Day in charge. Oh yeah, but now Steed's the captain again and
he's got to prove it to himself. Well, he's challenging it by bringing

(06:25):
Blackbeard back after a vote to exileBlackbeard. So I think that's gonna be
really hard to win the crew over. So they put a fucking bell on
black Beard like a damn cat.Yes, and I think the one who
has the most problems with it isLucius. Yes, Lucius. It's very

(06:45):
visibly disturbed through a lot of theepisode. Yeah, he doesn't like black
Beard being there. He doesn't likethe crew pretending like everything's okay. And
I think Blackbeard tries to make amendsby letting him push him off the boat,
like the same way. He eventried to get him to say the
same line that they're having the talentshow, and black Beard's like, what

(07:06):
are you talking about? I wouldnever say that, no memory, So
but it seems to help him alittle, pushing him over. But he's
still very focused on black Beard.A black Beard does a flower, black
Beard does a dog drawings because he'sdiscussing the self portrait, or not a

(07:30):
self portrait, but a portrait ofhis lover, Black Pete, and black
Pete's trying to have a conversation, but Lucius is too busy just thinking about
black Beard. Yep. And it'sweird. It's really weird, as those
drawings illustrate. The dog one wasreally good, though. I really like

(07:51):
the dog one. I like theflower, You like the flower. The
flower was cute, but I reallylike the dog one. It's just so
good. Might be my next tattoo. Where would I put that on my
butt cheek? No one can seeit. But he's walking around sulking.

(08:13):
And then he runs into Izzy andsays, aren't you feeling upset about this?
After what he did to you?And Is He's like, what are
you talking about? I don't knowwhat you mean. I lost my foot
in a shark attack and Is He'sbeen whittling this piece of wood throughout the
episode, and in this scene it'srevealed to have been a shark. And

(08:35):
he talks about how he'd rather livein delusion than to not move on.
Yeah, so he's going with thestory that he lost his leg to the
shark and that's how he can forgiveblack Beard. Yeah, because it wasn't
black Beard, that was a shark. That's his version of moving on,
which isn't great. I mean,Lucius calls it out as being unhealthy,

(08:56):
but is He kind of says, like, not moving on is just sad,
it's worse, and I think hehas a point. I think holding
on to trauma can be very difficultand exhausting, and I think that kind
of coping mechanism, it is acoping mechanism, but it can help you

(09:18):
move on, get out of yourhead and try to live your life in
the present, because you can't livein the past. You really can't.
You can't change it, and youcan relive it over and over and over
again, but it doesn't change itthe what happened. What you can change
is how you react to it inthe present, and I think that's what

(09:39):
is He's kind of saying, thisis how I choose to react to it,
and this is what I'm doing tomove on, and he hands them
the little shark he's been working onthroughout the episode and Lucia's is like,
oh well, I kind of reallylike that. That's my favorite part of
that direction. I think that touchesLucia in a way that nothing else has.

(10:01):
I think it takes somebody who's beenthere at the bottom kind of showing
you the way out to help, you know, move on, move forward.
And he proposes to Black Pete kindof yes, not like a formal
proposal, because they didn't have gaymarriage back then, but they definitely had
gay partnerships lifelong partnerships too historically,So I think it's really sweet that he's

(10:28):
like, I want to move onand I want to spend the rest of
my life with you. And thenhe presents him that portrait in the hall,
which was kind of awful compared tothe Blackbeard dog. Right did the
same guy draw that, Like,I don't know if it was like the
scale of it or just the factthat Black Pete doesn't look like a lot

(10:52):
of like recognizable features because he doesthough he's he's got like that nose and
the beard kind of and he's baldheaded. You can you can work with
that if you know what you're doing, but the scale can be difficult too.
And then charcoal on wood probably notthe best medium. It's just very

(11:13):
difficult to draw that. I don'tknow how long it's gonna last. Yeah,
but Black Pete has been, youknow, kind of irritated with Lucius
for being so negative and focusing onalmost dying as opposed to being alive,
and so it's great to see himcome around that corner. Yeah, And
Black Pete was trying to tell him, like, hey, you know,

(11:33):
you spend all this time crying aboutwhat happened to you, but you never
happy about that you survived. AndI think I kind of there's a part
of me that likes that. There'sanother part of me that's like, fuck
your toxic positivity. Man, lethim feel his feelings. So because there's
like this idea of like hurry upand move on, hurry up and be

(11:58):
better, hurry up and like makeit go away by just being happy about
it. Why can't you just behappy? And it's like that's not easy
for some people. We've you know, trauma and life experience and things happened
to you that make it difficult tofocus on the present and we have to
give space to that. And Ithink Black Pete's just complaining because he's felt

(12:22):
like he's given enough space for that. But there's no sense of time here,
so I can't tell you if it'sbeen two weeks or ten days or
it's about the same around the time, isn't it? But you know what
I mean, we don't know howlong it's been months or how long has
it been since they've had to dealwith this. I don't know. I

(12:46):
just I'm happy that he's moving forwardand he's making an effort. But it's
just like his partner's approach didn't work. It took Izzy telling him like,
what you're giving up when you focuson this? And I think that's really
kind of impactful because everybody can tellyou you're you're doing this wrong, but
you won't listen until you experience somethingor you do something that shows you that

(13:11):
it's wrong. So Izzy was kindof all over this episode, and it's
good to see him cout back, yeah, really bouncing back from from last
week and taking taking back some ofhis identity. I guess he's relearning his
swordsmanship skills and he's you know,he's in Steed's eer a lot, kind
of guiding him and pushing him andtrying him right because Buttons is gone as

(13:37):
second mate or first mate or whateverthey call it, and I think he's
kind of taken that role. Soit's kind of cool to see him kind
of take Bonnet under his wing alittle bit and like shelling him the ropes.
Literally, it's really good. Ireally enjoyed it. I thought it

(13:58):
was like it almost gave me alittle bit of closure with their relationship,
you know, like because they startedoff like we're going to murder Steed Bonnet
and now he's like, I'm goingto make Steed Bonnet better. So that's
pretty like night and day. Andthen by the end of the episode,
like we see a more competent Steed. We don't actually see it. I
guess it's kind of off screen thatthey right the swordsmanship and the everything's kind

(14:26):
of done, and then we fadeto them like accomplishing their goal. It's
like they remember we were fighting backto back like that. Yeah, that
was kind of funny, I like, because there's like this trope about showing,
not telling and writing, and inthis case, they're like, wouldn't
it be funny if we just saidwe did all that? Yeah, but
we do see Steed towed off thatattack with a knife at the end.

(14:50):
So only also he does a punch. Oh yeah, he does a punch
before he takes that suit, thesuit. Can we talk about the suit?
Yes, Okay. So they geton the ship and there's like some
satanic star in the very what dothey call it in the you know,
the the ship middle. I don'tknow what it is. I don't know

(15:13):
what it's called. That's it.That's it. Some geometry going on.
Yeah, the fact that they knowwhat geometry is it blows my mind,
like what not? As much asthey're into like curses and superstitions, they
don't know a pentagram. Yeah,And somehow it ends up that the one

(15:37):
of the few pirates that speak Spanishends up going down where there's a Spanish
priest talking about the Vatican and thecurse and how every object is cursed.
And Jim is just like freaked outand they're like, we need to get
out of here, and Steed's like, what what do you talking about?

(16:00):
No, And then the door closesand it reveals this like I want to
say, Matador style slash like fourteenthcentury, Louis the fourteenth or it might
not be fourteenth century. I'm sorry. In seventeenth century, yeah, of

(16:22):
the era, kind of kind ofstyle suit in bright red the devil's color
there you read. I didn't rememberit being red for some reason. I
thought it was like a yellow. No, no, yellow is I don't
think Steed wears yellow. I thinkSteed normally wears like blues. In the
beginning, he wore kind of creamycolors, but red, very contrasting color

(16:47):
for this character. Because usually whatI noticed in movies is that characters sometimes
get assigned to color palette, andtheir color palette indicates like their character.
Like repeating myself a little, butso for like example, like a woman

(17:11):
might be wearing green because she's envious, or she might be wearing red because
she's full of passion. And red, for Steed is a power color and
he looks good with it. Helikes to move it around the little tails,
and he's like very confident in it. But the whole crew is like,

(17:32):
get it away from me, youdemon. At first, they were
really into it, but then Jimis like it's fucking cursed. Yeah,
So at first it's mostly Jim,Aluwandi and Archie who are really terrified of
it and trying to protect themselves fromit with all that garlic and the salt
line. Steed approaches Roach and Frenchyand calls them men of science, which,

(17:56):
having heard all of the things thatFrenchie has said, who not draw
that conclusion. Oh and in thisepisode we find out that what's his name,
the cook I always want to callRoach Roach invented peanut paste, yes,
and said peanut paste gave his frienda rash. But they chalk it

(18:21):
up to the suit because how coulda peanut do it? How could a
bean do it? And he's like, he could kill you, man,
that's crazy. I'm kind of gladthat they have that somebody with the peanut
allergy come on representation what he keepeating peanuts? He keeps eating the peanuts
because he's maybe he's never had one, which is kind of hard to believe.

(18:45):
But if we're talking about this timeof like in this time, it's
like when people didn't have, youknow, fruits and vegetables available to them
readily, So I could believe thatsomebody had never had peanuts. Have you
ever heard of that Reddit story ofthe guy who pretends he's never heard of
potatoes? No, Oh my god, he pisses. He's like meeting his

(19:11):
girlfriend's parents for the first time andthere they made potatoes or something and he's
like, oh, I never heardof that, and they're like what and
he's like, oh shit, likeI just lied. But he like doubles
down. He's like, yeah,I've never heard of potatoes, and they're
like, how have you never heardof potatoes? And like he ruins his

(19:32):
relationship with the parents and the girlfriend. But he like died on the hill
of the potatoes. I think hemight have been made up, but it's
still really hilarious to think of somebodywho's never eaten or had a potato.
I don't know, but that's whatit made me think of when when they're
like, Roach, have you neverhad peanuts before? Or not? Roach
Frenchy. Sorry. So they passedthat suit off to another crew, No,

(19:57):
they have to. Stee has atart to heart with Izzy about how
the crew won't listen to reason andhe has to get rid of the suit,
and eventually Steed concedes and he comesdown and he's like, everybody,
come out, I'm not wearing thesuit. What are we going to do
with it? And Archie recommends thatthey stab it and somebody I think it

(20:21):
was Roach who said, wouldn't itbe crazy if it bleeds? And then
somebody it was Jim, who saidthey have to give it to somebody else,
and that's what they land on,that they're going to pay it forward
with a curse. And who says, is it we John who says aren't

(20:44):
we bad people? I think itwas black Pete. I don't think we
John was in the episode. Ohokay, But yeah, so they land
on this decision to pass it offto another crew. But what Steed kind
of slips by everyone is that hekept the shirt that came with it.
The shirt was the best part, honestly, the suit was too much.
The burgundy and the black really lookgood on Steed too. Yeah, I

(21:07):
think he made a good choice tokeep the shirt, and so he,
like, I don't know, hemade a compromise that worked for all of
them. And I don't know.I think the crew was happy with that
decision and they're they have peace ofmind. And Steed has still updated his
wardrobe some. Yes, I don'timagine he has much of a wardrobe now.
I think black Beard gotted everything fromthe ship. Yeah, and he

(21:30):
doesn't have the funds anymore to justshop so he'll get his clothing where he
can, even in a cursed boat. So meanwhile, Fang's going out fishing
and picks up black Beard along theway. What a wholesome duo, right,
those two guys. Fang is justso like there's an air of like

(21:52):
almost innocence to him, Like hehas like this very friendly, cuddly even
though he's like decked out and leatherand studs, he's giving like soft,
gentle, giant kind of vibes.Yeah, he's always kind of like friendly
and giggly and yeah, and hisvery soft spoken despite that we've seen like

(22:15):
he can do acts of violence.Yeah, that's can everyone on the ship.
Yeah, but yeah, they goout and have a bit of a
heart to heart and black Beard triesto reminisce on things, and thing shuts
it down pretty quick. They're like, hey, that was not fun for
me, right, and he's like, how did you get over it?
Oh, murdering you helped? Andthen him describing how they've were like treating

(22:36):
his body made black Beard be like, no, I don't need to hear
anymore, thank you. So theyboth have like experiences where they've hurt each
other and they're kind of okay withthat though, and Fang kind of made
an observation about how black Beard can'tshut up. He's like, do you
ever think that maybe you keep talkingbecause you can't sit quietly with yourself?

(22:59):
And black Beard start saying something. He's like, let's try it, and
he catches a fish and he comesback home to Steed in the evening and
they reconnect and Steve tells him abouthis day with the cursed suit and the
new shirt. Yeah, and youhave to stay for the post credit scene
to see him actually catch the fish. Yeah. And we also find out

(23:19):
that Fang's real name is Kevin Junior, well Kevin like the eighteenth or something,
though he comes from a long lineof Kevin's, but we still don't
know why they call him fing.It was a good episode, and when
I liked it when they came backand were like checking it with each other,
and I think Steed was very boldto kind of kiss him hard,

(23:41):
and you could tell that Blackbeard wasapprehensive about it, and he's like,
let's go Slow's we've already said that. We're both very like spontaneous or what's
the word he used. They're impulsive, Yeah, impulsive people, and he
doesn't want to do something impulsive justyet. Yeah, they're prone to whims,

(24:04):
that's it. But yeah, Steedis embracing more assertiveness in his life,
and so you I think you wesee him kind of coming to their
relationship with that, and black Beardis doing more self reflecting and he's almost
timid, which is odd. ButI think I would be too if I
just forgave you for fucking abandoning me. Yeah, So I wouldn't want to

(24:26):
just like cop into bed with youright away and be like, oh,
yeah, everything's fucking good. It'dbe like, let's take it slow because
I need to rebuild that trust andthat connection and that that doesn't happen in
a day or two. Even ifyou are wearing power red. Yeah,
well it's maroon or burgundy, butit's still. Yeah, he's he's very

(24:49):
I think this is the most attractiveSteed has looked besides The Mermaid, and
I was still halfway on board withthat. Without that glitter, it still
did half the back half, Yeah, the Mermaid half. It's the eleven
pounds of glitter that did it forme, really or anything else on this

(25:10):
episode I really liked when Lucius flippedhim off and he had his little wooden
finger and he like bent it downand it was his real, like regular
finger, just flipping off Blackbeard.I love that. I just love defiance.
I like this shoes came off whenhe flipped him over the rail.
Oh yeah, that was good too. I also enjoyed how how fit is

(25:33):
he was after all that. Yeah, shirtless is he? Yeah? Not.
I wouldn't kick him out of bedfor eating crackers. It's looking good
even if he's been down in alot of booze lately. Yeah, I
can hardly see the calories on him. Damn Astral queen. Who was the
standout character in the episode? Who'syour Astral Queen? Oh? So I

(26:00):
was originally thinking Fang because I likehim a lot and he hasn't had one.
Yeah, but I don't talking tothis episode, I feel like maybe
it's lucious Lucius is a good option. I think that's a strong choice for
sure. I'm going to go withIzzy because he had that piece of wood
from the beginning of the episode untilthe end and he turned it into a

(26:22):
shark and I thought that was reallycool. And also he like helped Lucious
and Bonnit, and he's been likea good part of the crew. And
I liked his shirtless candle moment. He was very helpful this episode. He's
always showing up where he needed tobe. Yeah, I think I'll pick

(26:42):
Lucius just because he managed to overcomesome things as a character and he's engaged.
Yeah, he's moved his relationship forwardand done some healing and hopefully he'll
be a little less poudy hopefully. All right, is he and Lucia be
receiving your rewards. We're going togo into the spoilers after this, so

(27:04):

Yeah, I've forgotten the previews. They showed that it's not gonna be fun.

(28:33):
No, there's like a torturous pirateafter Blackbeard for breaking his record for
something, right, Is that theone? Yeah? Yeah, yikes yeah.
And I believe Black Pete and Luciusare getting married during this event.
Maybe I don't recall. I thinkso. I think that's part of the

(28:56):
celebration they're putting together. I justlike everybody's like made up and fanciful.
It's been a while since we seethem all fancy and then I'm ready for
Sean Sao to come back. Yes, I believe we'll see her again next
episode. She and who's the noseguy, the new guy, Richard Ricky

(29:18):
Barnes Bains, Yeah, Bains. What did I say, Barnes Bains.
Yeah, they're going to have analliance and they're all kind of mad at
Steve and the crew. Yeah, fishing has an impact on black Beard and
he tries to go to the fishermanroute. Yeah, and he likes the
fishing, even though he only caughtone little measley fish, but he's into

(29:40):
the idea of being a fisherman.Very Jesus, yeah, even though Jesus
was never a fisherman, but hedid that whole fish thing. Fisher of
men they called him, did they? Oh my god, that's creepy.
He fishes for men like that soundslike he's luring the men. Yeah,
nasty Jesus a fisher of men.Okay. I thought the fish was because

(30:07):
he made a bunch of fish fromone fish, that it was his magic
tricks. So's I have to ask, what's the Jesus fish about? I
know that, okay. Oh,it's just a symbol that is often used
to show an affinity for Christianity. The symbol is a fish the Greek word
issuus inside, which means fish inGreek. It is also an acronym for

(30:33):
the phrase Jesus Christ, Son ofGod, Savior. Yeah, so it's
it's an acronym that ends up spillingout fish and it also refers to the
multiplication of the fish and the bread. Anyway, it does give Jesus though,
being a fisherman, and he's likeeven got a little beard and the
hair he's giving Brown Jesus. Tryingto think if there's anything else from this
episode that really carries on, ishe continues to kind of form an influenced

(31:00):
