Welcome to Spacing Out with BB andJason this week covering Our Flag Means Death
Season two, episode three, Theinnkeeper Ye, welcome to Spacey Now.
I'm BB and I'm Jason, andwe are discussing Our Flag Means Death one

(00:21):
episode at a time. Spoiler freein the series is available to stream on
Max and you should know this isa rewatch for us. We will have
a spoiler section at the end ofthe podcast where we are free to discuss
any future events in the series. So it's your first time watching Johnny spoilers.
We'll just need to skip that clearlymarked section, but otherwise we won't
be spoiling anything past this episode, which is Our Flag Means Death Season two,

(00:42):
episode three, The Innkeeper's originally airedon October fifth, twenty twenty three,
which is the same as the lasttwo weeks because they released them in
batches like that. It was writtenby Alyssa Laine and Alex Sherman and directed
by Andrew Deyong. In this episode, Dongie Sal's crew complete a successful raid
and come upon the Damnage Revenge.Steed finds the remaining crew but can't get

(01:03):
any information about Ed's whereabouts. Antisuspects of mutiny and advises Ying to kill
the crew of the Revenge. Steedand the crew escape pen steal back the
Revenge, taking the Red Flag's wheelin the process. Meanwhile, Ed is
in a form of purgatory referred toas a gravy basket under the care of
his former captain Benjamin Hornigold, andmust decide whether to live or die.
As he begins to die, heis saved by the sound of Steed's voice

(01:26):
and his appearance in the form ofa mermaid, and Ed wakes up to
Steed at his bedside, clutching hishand. Vibe check. Did we like
the episode overall? How does itstand the test of time? What a
nice little story. It's a goodepisode. Care to elaborate. I liked
it. I thought it was good. It was interesting to see the two

(01:49):
crews finally meeting and you see thejuxtaposition of their situations and how they've been
dealing with the separation. It's veryinteresting. Yeah, one cruise in survival
mode and the others eating soup.Yeah. And I like how Steve is
kind of learning from Uh Jao Jeong. She said it really casual in this

(02:15):
episode, and she said like JangShang Shang so shangy South. Yeah,
she's like teaching him a lot basedon like he's just like taking notes.
Yeah, he's got like an apprenticeship. So yeah, it's a it's a
good episode. It kind of itgets you back to where you want to
be with the crew together and Edand Stead are reunited. We don't know

(02:37):
what that's going to look like whenthey wake up, but like the things
we've been wanting to get back to, we've achieved at the end of this
third episode. Right, Yeah, very interesting. So for trivia, I
didn't really find any trivia for thisepisode. There's no trivia for Steve in
a Mermaid suit. I didn't findany. Oh, there is so much
fan art. It's as Steve asa Mermaid fan art. It's crazy.

(03:01):
I could not escape Mermaid Steed forlike weeks that fall. Yeah. Yeah,
I do think that, like thestrike, so I'd have impacted like
just how much general information was outthere for the show and like, yeah,
background information for the episodes just becauseno one could talk about it.

(03:22):
Yeah, and by the time theywere able to, like they were kind
of just past commenting on every singleepisode. I guess yeah, and I
think, like, let's think aboutthe world stage. Like a couple of
days after that, there was likethat whole issue with Gaza and Israel happening.
Oh yeah October. Yeah. Yeah. So it's just like hard to

(03:45):
kind of focus on a show whenthere's actor strikes and there's like air strikes.
It's just hard. But it wasa good respite for a little bit
to kind of have like that breather. But I like this episode. I
think it's cool. I like thetwo cultures colliding and kind of seeing each
other, like I'm trying that soup. It's great. So I must watch

(04:09):
for me and then Auntie being adetective, great deep sea dive. Let's
break down some of our thoughts onthe episode. You can share your thoughts
with us through email or social media. We may use your comments on an
upcoming episode. Let's get into it. We start with Steed's kind of getting

(04:30):
a hands on lesson about raiding aship. Yeah, like how to do
it the right way where it's notlike it's obviously violent, but there's there's
like a level of decorum and there'sdiplomacy involved where you know he was doing
too much diplomacy and ed was toomuch like brutality. So this is just

(04:56):
like a very happy medium, likewhere we are doing pirate thing, but
we are also like business people. We are trying to engage and we are
working on the same side, whichwas interesting. And he's like, oh,
yeah, I love to talk itout as a crew, you know
whatever, Like I think that's great, and she's like, oh no,
no, if he didn't pick whatI wanted him to pick, he was

(05:17):
definitely going to die. And he'slike, oh, he was kind of
shocked that there was going to belike actual consequences too. But she's so
good at what she wants. She'sso good at like presenting these ideas to
these men, and it's like atfirst they don't even know what to think
because he gets boarded and you know, all a one day and Steet are

(05:39):
there and he doesn't even see herin the middle somehow. Yeah, and
she's almost annoyed with the like predictabilityof everything, with the whole process of
boarding these ships. Yeah, it'sher. It's a random Tuesday for her.
Yep. It's almost like she's amanager being called down the deal with
something. Yeah, he's she's amanager coming down to deal with a Karen

(06:02):
or a Ken. But then momentslater we come upon another ship and it's
all our old friends. They looklike shit. Yeah, they look like
shit. They're all in huddled inSteed's old room eating a bird. They
look like shit, and they're eatinglike garbage because Cookie wasn't with them,
right, the cook got stuck withthe on the deserted island, so they

(06:25):
don't even know how to cook abird and need it properly. Yeah,
Like, I wonder how much timehas passed since we last saw them.
Was it just like the storm thatravaged them that much? Or have they
been out there trying to survive fora while. It's hard to say.
There's no there's no way to tellwith this show time passing, right,

(06:46):
Maybe we'll figure it out when blackBeard wakes up. Who knows, But
I mean, yeah, I guessnot too long. If black Beard is
still able to be alive without havingany sustenance, right, and nobody changing
his pants or something like when youdie, if you really did you evacuate
your bowels, nobody wants to bearound for that. They would have thrown

(07:06):
his ass overboard by then. Butyeah, they're they're like It kind of
makes me think of that movie thesong Hotel California, You know that that
like lyric where they're like stab itwith their steally knives and like it's very
eerie, like the way that hewalks in and then like he sees his

(07:29):
portrait all like stabbed up, andthen there's like a line of like a
knife scratching through the hallway and it'sjust like kind of scary. Yeah,
it's got to be really surreal forhim to like the last time he saw
the ship it was in good condition. Now it's like a eleminal space yeah
thing and full of knives. Thatscene where he looks up and it's just

(07:54):
knives one spot. Where do theyget all these knives? That's crazy.
Who's their knife maker? Who's theirknife guy? Right, it's probably taken
knives from all the ships they're rating. Maybe, yeah, they got right.
They had so much treasure they hadto throw some overboard, so surely

(08:18):
they like plundered some knives as well. Somehow she lets them come aboard to
the ship and feeds them. Yeah, that's weird to me, those decisions
that she's making. As Auntie kindof pointed out, she's being clouded.
She's she wants to make the softone happy. Yeah, she's putting a
lot of trust in the fact thatthis is all Awande's friends and Steed's friends.

(08:41):
So they're feeding them. They getsome soup, which they seem very
happy about. Yeah, I meanafter they ate Robern, I would be
too, But no word on Edor what happened to him. No,
he's retired. Yeah, he's retired. I like that. It seemed like
that was a new concept for them. They're like, yeah, apparently if
you don't want to work anymore, you can just well, Steed introduced Blackbeard

(09:05):
to the idea of being retired,so I don't think they did know about
being retired, but I like thatfriend. She was like introducing it to
Steed as if Steve didn't know whatit was. Last season, they didn't
know what a vacation was. Yeah, so they're just like full of wonder.
And then they the eucalyptus. Thefact that all one day and Jim

(09:30):
couldn't pronounce or say the word eucalyptuswas really good. They're like, I
don't know what this. It smellsso nice, but I don't know what
it is. And the fact thatthe towels smelled nice is what causes everyone
to smell them when they received themand helps them out later when they what
they called on it to make thempass out chloroform. No, he said
it's camma meal. I don't thinka meal does that. It was something.

(09:52):
But yeah, Auntie is on thecase of figuring out what happened,
what happened to you. She's kindof like reminding me of Aragon when he's
figuring out what happened to the Hobbits, and he was like a hobbit lay
here and hear the other and theycrawled their were cut. Yeah, she's
like he's a six foot hair ofgray or silver or something. And then

(10:16):
she actually finds out that they havebeen keeping him, but she thinks he's
dead too. Yeah. No onechecked for a pulse. No, they
don't know about pulses back then.I guess this crew doesn't like to dispose
of bodies. Not right away, but immediately after she finds that he's actually

(10:39):
like dead, like not retired orwhatever, that it was a mutiny,
they get arrested and they put himin the jail cell. Yep, because
you know they've been pretty casual aboutmutiny up to this point, but we
can see that it doesn't go overwell with other captains. Yeah. Yeah,
So the people who are on hercrew come to visit them in the

(11:01):
jail cell and they're like, sorry, guys, uh, you know,
maybe she'll go easy on you.And Allawandi's definitely trying to broke her a
deal with her, but Steed he'slike, hell no, we're fucking breaking
out. Yeah, And it's it'sreally sad that Alawande is forced to choose
in the moment. And I don'tknow if he's happy about his choice or

(11:22):
not. I think he's just like, I think there's a reluctancy, but
I think there's also like a loyaltyto Jim because he's known Jim for so
much longer and they've been away fromeach other for a while, and they
came clean to each other about likeJim making out with Archie and everything,
and I think it's just like doyou go with your crew or do you

(11:46):
stick around and figure out what thisnew thing is about. It's hard,
it's a hard decision, and Ifeel like Allawandi, I don't know,
I don't know if he's like he'slike smart, but I don't I don't
know if he was prepared because hedidn't even realize that Shang liked him.
Yeah, well, her seduction wasvery scary. It was scary. I

(12:09):
was trying to be sexy by pointingthis knife at you. What do you
think? It's definitely like I'm goingto kill you if you say the wrong
thing here. Yeah, so Idon't know if I would feel like comfortable
with that kind of relationship personally, because that's like your boss, right,
whereas Jim is like more of hiscoworker. But they steal the wheel,

(12:31):
which is fucking hilarious, like weeJohn is on the case and he was
so apologetic. He's like, oh, I'm so sorry about this. They
also needed a wheel though, Yeah, they needed a wheel, but it
also helped them in their escape.Yeah, so it's like great on both
ends. It was like very wellthought out their escape with Black Pete,

(12:52):
Like, Black Pete, you're gonnabe the one who shoots the arrow?
Why me? You are just talkingabout how you have perfect aim. He's
such a loser. I just can'twith him. Freaking Buttons could not be
quiet during there's their escape, Likethis very critical moment he was just like,

(13:16):
oh, you grade shot. Theman does not whisper. No,
he does not whisper. But Ilike that once he got on his ship,
he was immediately like delegating and likeassigning tasks. He was ready to
move. Yeah, he's first mate. Yeah. And then when Steed came
aboard, there was a moment betweenhim and is he is. He wanted

(13:39):
to like say thank you, buthe didn't let him do it, and
I was like, kind of batLike, I felt sad because I feel
like that could have been like away for them to kind of mend their
relationship. So I don't know.I feel like they both love Blackbeard,
and I feel like they have thatin common. And I think is he
starting to see the value of Steed? Yeah? You know, we've been

(14:01):
following is He's journey this season, but the last thing Steed saw was is
he like selling them out? Yeah? So I think it's it's a pretty
natural reaction for him to be calledis he? Yeah? Yeah, is
he is. He's one of themore interesting characters to me, just because
he's been in so many different positionsas like the antagonists and the victim and

(14:22):
the person who hates Steed and isnow like indebted to Steed and it's yeah,
he's complex. His journey is nota straight line. Yeah no,
And I think that's what makes himsuch a strong character in this show.
I really enjoy is he Well,he doesn't do much, but I just
in the scope and the whole ofthe show is he is one of the

(14:45):
characters that definitely stands out. Butin this episode, I feel like the
crew is just great together. Idon't know, it just it's so It
felt so right for them to belike all gathered up and using their little
towel for that little zip line, you know, and they were talking about
paying using two towels because he's alittle heavier set. It was cute.

(15:07):
I thought it was fun, like, you know, they're just back to
their crewdness. Yeah, and itwas nice that it was the towels because
that's was the assignment on the ship. Yeah, And I don't know,
it was good. And then thisshow in this episode is so beautiful,
especially when we get to the gravybasket or whatever those shots. That scenery

(15:31):
that's setting is so gorgeous. It'sso beautiful that it feels otherworldly. It's
like a place set in real lifeand reality, but the way that they
shot it made it feel ethereal andI felt like I believed that he was
in this other realm and it's likenot anybody could just point a camera out

(15:52):
a beach and capture that, youknow. So I was just like very
in awe of that, like beingpart of this little pirate show. We
had this like intermission of like Idon't even know how to describe it.
It's just I was in awe.Like I just was like my my breath
was taken away. It was sogorgeous and it was weird and cool and

(16:15):
like like I kind of want togo to purgatory. That's maybe the first
time that's been said. I mean, you're not in heaven, you're not
in hell, You're just on thisbeach. Why not some guys they're making
shoes. I'm in You get toplay innkeeper. Yeah, and then there's

(16:40):
like a pig who doesn't want tobe around, a pig named Ruthie.
I don't know, I'm into it. It was really cool. It was
interesting. It's like Blackbeard coming toterms with his feelings towards himself and how
he's behaving and accepting that maybe he'sgot to die. That's crazy. Yeah,

(17:03):
well, like wondering what he hasto live for. And then in
the end it's Mermaid Steed. Ifucking love this scene. The scene is
like a gay fever dream, especiallywith Ed's hair flowing like so beautifully in
the water and Steed this magical mermaid, like made of gold almost. It's

(17:29):
just iconic, iconic. Those guys, they held their breath for so long.
It was great. I can't yeah, I don't. Yeah, it
was just perfect. That's and that'swhat like brings him back to life,
literally, like that evidence and songyou know what what I'm talking about,

(17:51):
And and Steed like, you know, he's mourning the loss of his lover.
He's like please, Ed, likeI'm sorry, and then starts moving
his hand involuntarily, and that givesSteve more hope and more drive to like
keep calling to Ed. And thelast thing we see is Ed's eyes open

(18:11):
up. Oh it's so good.It's crazy. I don't know. I'm
just like, I can't even.Yeah. When I was when I saw
like this episode was coming up theway I remembered it, it was like
it wasn't as balanced as it actuallyis in my memory, like the episode
is more balanced than I remembered itbeing because I thought it was a lot

(18:32):
more of just like black Beard inthe Gravy Basket. Yeah, but there
was so much else going on,and so yeah, I think I remembered
it being much more of this likejust character piece for black Beard, which
it is, but I felt likeit had just a lot of other elements.
Oh yeah, Yeah, it definitelymoves the plot forward. The plot
was moving, it was. It'snot stagnant or like a black Beard episode.

(18:56):
Yeah, Like in my mind, like we kind of like breast pause
and we're going to deal with Blackbeardand then we're going to pick back up.
But that's not really how it feltwatching it again. No, this
show doesn't do that. This showis really good about like keeping it moving
and going and like setting you upfor the next one. It's so good
like that. Yeah, it's onlyeight episodes this season. They got to

(19:17):
keep it moving. Yeah, theyhave a lot to get through. But
yeah, I love this episode.I think it's one of the like,
like the cinematography on it alone isjust incredibly I don't know, they should
have gotten an Emmy or something forthat. It's so good. People talk
about like Lost being like really beautifuland epic and shit like that, and
I'm like, yeah, but whatabout you know, our flag means death?

(19:42):
Like sure, maybe it's like thePirates. Maybe it's like the humor.
I don't know, but people justdidn't take it seriously and in a
lot of ways, and it justit's so good, it's just so disappointing.
Yeah, like sci fi fantasy, assume drama type things don't get a
lot of attention and awards. Yeah, but this one's saying so much like

(20:04):
even in the beginning, a womanpirate going through her like everyday shpiel to
these men about how you know,do you want to die surrendering to a
woman or do you want to workfor me? Like you know, she's
girl bossing. I don't know. It's just really fun and it's like you
don't see that a lot in thesekind of like I mean, you're seeing

(20:27):
it more now, but it's notI mean, I don't know of a
pirate show that I can think ofthat had like a very strong female character
that wasn't a secondary she's the captain. No offense to Kia Knightley. But
I don't believe she ever captained aship. Maybe she did in like the
seventh movie or something, but Ibelieve the first we ever saw her was

(20:49):
her being so tightly wound up ina course that she fell and couldn't swim.
I think she does become a captainat some point. I'm sure she
does. Yeah, I think everyonein that series gets to be a captain
astral queen. Who was the standout character in the episode? Who's your

(21:12):
astral queen? Oh? No,A good question. Who should it be?
Minds Steve Bonnet? Steve, Yeah, for being a go getter and
a learner and just going above andbeyond, and you know, standing by
his man and apologizing. So that'sthat's what I was saying. Yeah,
ste he makes most sense. Iwould say he orchestrated the escape and he

(21:34):
brought Blackbeard back. I probably haveto pick him, unless I want to
pick Auntie's detective skills. But Wundy, she was good. She warned her
and she didn't say I told youso, and she should have. She
held her tongue, so that's alsogood. You're right, I mean,
you're you're more than justified and pickingAuntie. No, I think it's got

(21:56):
to be Steed. The patriarchy winsagain. Yep Steed, Mermaid Steed.
Oh yeah, Mermaid Steed. CanI put I'm gonna say mermaid Steve Steve
as a mermaid. It's just iconic. I don't know. It's just like
you see a lot of mermaids onTV, and shit, they're all women
with like seashells on their tits. How often do you see a merman rescuing

(22:21):
another man and kissing underwater? Youmay have never seen it before actually at
first. Yeah, usually they're youknow, they're all jacked. They're Jason
Momoa. He doesn't he's not mermaid. He's got two feet Yeah, but
yeah, you're right there. Yeah, with those big Pepperoni nipples. There's
nothing wrong with Pepperoni nipples either. All nipples are valid, but those are

(22:45):
Yeah, you're right. Most ofthese guys have pecks and abs and they're
like impossible beauty standards. Steve islike average Joe Merman, murdude, if
you will, middle aged Murman.Yeah, I like it. I like
it a lot. Well, Ithink that wraps up the main part of
the episode, So we will goto the spoiler section next. Oh you

(23:07):
ready, So if you don't wantto be spoiled, then you have to
be left behind. The next episodeis called fun and Games, and we
will see you for that one soundsfun. Let's put our living stereo stylist
in this group. Grace for impact. Spoilers ahead. If you haven't seen

(23:29):
the whole series, now is thetime to say goodbye. Remember you can
contact us at Spacingoutpod at gmail dotcom, find us on social media,
share your thoughts and be a partof the discussion. Spoilers in five four
three two one. Okay, Ireally want to talk about is and how

(23:49):
fucking tragic is arciss Okay, it'sso sad, Like it's just I cannot
believe I still cannot get over thefact that he dies. Because we were
talking about like how his character isso complex and different, and there's like,
you know, he's been a victim, he's been the antagonist, and

(24:11):
he's gone through a fucking hell inhigh water to find some sort of semblance
of a life of a happiness, and the fact that he dies is just
so sad. I'm just it's sosad. I can't believe it. I
still can't believe it. I'm soupset about is he dying, Like it's
so hard to watch this show knowingthat he's going to die, especially after

(24:36):
we see him in Calypso's birthday.Calypso's birthday is when Izy kind of metamorphoses
into who he truly is, likethis beautiful, like glammed up, flamboyant
person and you see him shining andthen like it all just turns to ash.
It's so sad. Yeah. Idon't remember exactly what happens to him,

(24:57):
but I know that like he likehe's searching for like where he belongs,
and he tries to like cut himselfoff from the crew, but they
show their respect for him by givinghim that leg from the horse on the
ship. Yeah. So yeah,it's been for a heart of a character
to stomach as he was originally,Like it's such a it's tragic and it's

(25:21):
kind of like a beautiful arct Likeseeing him today at that table when they're
all eating that bird carcass, likethat's when it hit me like, like
Izzy has he's really like one ofthe crew. Now, he's not above
them, he's not below them, not like they're all united and equalized.
Yeah, I think and him beinglike willing to show the humility to say

(25:42):
I do want to like say thankyou to Steed and like start to mend
that relationship. Yeah, yeah, that was big. That was huge for
Izzy. But I think part ofit is the fact that he has gone
through like so much with black Beard, the fact that he lost his leg,
he lost a pose, like youknow, pits and pieces of himself

(26:03):
have literally been torn off of himin order for him to be able to
feel something like you're right, he'sright now, He's at the bottom.
And I think this happens a lotwith people who experience the loss of like
a limb or an ability like likeyou know, not being able to walk
or do something like if you getdiagnosed with an illness something. There's like

(26:29):
a grief process, and I thinkin this show they show they show this
show shows that grief and that lossof that former self so well, it's
not like hokey or overdone either. It's just like really real. And I'm
really happy that he has those friendshipswith the crew, like they're able to

(26:53):
forgive him for being a rat bastard. Yeah, and I know that I
know Blackbeard is he's going to belike banished from the ship, but he
gets brought back through Steed, Sois he's gonna have to, you know,
be face to face with black Beardagain, And I don't remember how
all that goes down, but heforever has this reminder of what black Beard
has done to him, like hecan't it's always there with him. Yeah,

(27:15):
but it's I'm just yeah, it'ssuch a tragic figure. I really
enjoy the character, and I'm justlike every time, I just I will
not be able to forget that hedies. Watch he doesn't die, and
I forget. I'm like remembering itwrong. Maybe there's like a post credit

(27:36):
scene you didn't watch. Yeah,I don't know. And I'm excited for
that episode where they get that cursedoutfit. Steve gets that cursed suit and
nobody likes him in that suit, even though he looks great in it,
Like, holy shit, the costumedepartment. That's great. I'm excited for

(27:59):
that episode. I feel like Steveis gonna slowly become his own pirate.
I'm excited for him an Izzy tomend there and build their bridge. Anything
else any spoilers from you, Idon't think so. I mean, yeah,
nothing really needs addressed. I'm willingto let the rest of the season
just come as it comes. Howmany more episodes? Five? Five?

(28:21):
That's not a lot, it's notenough. No, well man, the
show is so short. Hollywood sucks. And even like the way they released
it, it was like three threeand two or something, so it was
like three weeks. Yeah, itwas over quickly. Yeah. Yeah,
So I guess that's it. Yeah. Yeah, So we'll see you next
time for fun and games. Somefun new characters. Oh, we've got

(28:48):
those the two women running the shop, those two women and the other famous
woman pirate. I think we're nameright now. Yeah. Thanks for sailing
on the revenge. The Knives reallybring the place together. Thank you for
spacing out with BB and Jason. You can help us out by subscribing and
leaving a positive rating or review.Next time we will cover our flag means

(29:11):
Death, Season two, episode four, Fun and Games. We hope you
will join us.
