spoiling anything past this episode, whichis our flag means Death Season one episode
ten, the season one finale titledWherever You Go, There You Are So,
originally aired on March twenty fourth, twenty twenty two, Written by David
Jenkins and directed by Andrew Deyong. In this episode, Steed comes home to
find that a widowed Mary has builta new life for herself. After Mary

(01:30):
attempts to kill Steve and it's hissleep, they discuss their feelings and become
friends. With the help of Maryand her lover Doug, Steed plans to
fake his death and return to thesea. Meanwhile, on the Revenge,
a depressed Ed neglects's role as captainafter showing a softer side to his crew.
He later readopts the Kraken persona, throws Lucius overboard and punishes is he
insubordination. He orders all of Steed'sbelongings to be thrown overboard and strands Steed's

(01:55):
crew on a deserted island with theexception of Frenchy and Jim, and then
Steed takes so Dinghy and leaves insearch of Ed, finding his starving crew,
and that was the finale. Thatwas the last episode of season one.
Oh yeah, oh my god,it's crazy. Cliffhanger vibe check.
Did we like the episode overall? How does it stand the test of time?

(02:21):
I love this episode, But Ialso like, part of me is
like, why did Steve have toleave? But he had a lot of
unfinished business he did, so I'mglad that's like a chapter that's ending for
him. Yeah it is. Itis a nice little cap to the season,
even if like things are on agood place between Steve and Ed.
But yeah, it's still it wrapsup a lot of stuff and it feels

(02:43):
kind of nice. So yeah,I think it's good. How did you
feel the first time you watched itand knowing that like this is the last
episode you get? For a while, I was shocked. I was like,
what the fuck is happening? Howdid Steve find this deserted island?
That's never clear? That was like, what how did he like of all

(03:08):
the places in the fucking ocean, even if we're just talking about like the
Caribbean, Because he's he started offin Barbados, right, how did he
find them? Like the serendipitousness andthe the fact that him and his wife
were able to come to terms withthings, like everything seemed so well done,

(03:29):
and like the sorrow and the angstof black Beard was also very visceral.
I really enjoyed it. The firsttime I saw it, I was
like, what is going on?It's crazy? It's crazy, and it
made me want to be like,oh my god, I gotta watch next
season. When what are they goingto meet up? Like is Steve Bonnet

(03:51):
going to find Edward just as easilyas he found his abandoned crew? Like
what is going to happen? Sowell? I think it was just like
a perfect ending for a really greatseason. As we know the world be
at season two, and I thinkit was about a year and a half
between this episode and the next season, so there was a bit of a

(04:11):
wait, let's get into the triviatrivia time? What facts could we uncover
for Wherever you Go, There YouAre? The title wherever you go,
there you Are is an old proverbthat is often attributed to Confucius, although
there's no documentation of it, andit basically means one cannot run from one's
problems indefinitely. The historical black Bearddid, in fact maroon most of Bonnet's

(04:36):
crew, as well as robbing theRevenge and their other ships after the two
pirates went their separate ways after acceptingthe active grace. The flag that appears
at the end after Frenchy has sewnon the section with a bleeding heart being
stabbed with the spear is a flagthat is commonly associated with black Beard in
popular culture and sometimes by academic institutionssuch as a Smithsodian. However, there's

(04:58):
no known evidence of black Beard actuallyusing the flag. The leopard featured in
this episode was the same leopard featuredin Cardi B's wop music video Oho That
Leopard getting jobs yep. According toNathan Fode, Taika Waititi really cried while
filming the blankeant scene. David Jenkinsrevealed that despite having written the episode himself,

(05:19):
he still cried after seeing his nameis ed scene edited together. The
show's food stylist, Wan Jung Leerevealed that the toe that Izzy consumes was
actually carrot cake wrapped in a peppermintfondant with raspberry jelly for the blood,
and he had to pretend like itwas gross to eat. And on June

(05:40):
first, twenty twenty two, theseries was renewed for a second season.
Thank god, right, Oh mygod, that ending would have killed me.
So this aired on March twenty four, so there was a couple months
there where we didn't know. Yeah, we were on the edge of our
seats deep Sea Dive. Let's breakdown some of our thoughts on the episode.

(06:01):
You can share your thoughts with usthrough email or social media. We
may use your comments on an upcomingepisode. All right, diving in Cut
to Widow Bonnet laying in the middleof a very luscious bed, sleeping the
most comfortable sleep position in the middle, and you see, this woman's life

(06:23):
is just like so full of vibrancyand like peace of mind, that she's
like her own woman and she doesn'thave to worry about her husband anymore.
The kids are adjusting well. Shehas friends and they're fucking happy that they're

(06:44):
widows because they don't have to dealwith their spouses anymore. This is something
strange about straight culture, how spousesusually hate each other. And there's like
a thing about I hate my wife. You know, she's such a bitch
and then life is always like,oh my husband's a slob blah blah blah.
So it's like very much in thattrope of like how heterosexual life is

(07:09):
a prison and she's escaped it throughwidow dumb and her widow group. She's
no other people are sharing, andshe's like, yeah, isn't it great?
Do you feel free? And thentersteed bonnet and inter vomit. Yeah,
surprise. If you don't like vomit, this might not be the episode

(07:30):
for you. This one's pretty gross. Bro. There's vomit and toe eating.
So but yeah, she fucking throwsup. I would too, honestly
if I just saw my life collapsein front of me, Like everything I've
built it's gone. And then theycut to him and her sharing a bed
and he's like eighty percent of thebed. She gets twenty percent. Yeah,

(07:51):
and it's like, damn that sucks. And then breakfast is awkward.
Their lives are like he doesn't gether at all, no, and he's
like just so obtuse throughout most ofthis about like what what an inconvenience his
presence is, and like he hasthis expectation that like she owes him apologies

(08:11):
and stuff for how she's acted whenhe's gone, and it's kind of difficult,
but I mean it takes a niceturn, so it makes her a
good episode. Yeah, Like atthe moment where she's about to skewer his
brain, he like wakes himself upand they have an honest conversation about their
feelings towards each other and how likethey're not good for each other. Yeah,

(08:35):
he doesn't fit in there, ashe says, and he comes out
to her. They talk about love, and he's like, what's it like
being in love? Because they havethis clear understanding that they were never in
love, they never experienced love withone another. Yeah, so can you
tell me what it's like? Andas she's describing it, we get flashbacks
between Ed and him and their buddingromance kind of growing and blossoming, and

(09:00):
he's like, Wow, I thinkI'm in love, you know, like
I know I'm in love. Whois she Ed? He's great, you
know, Yeah, And it's areally beautiful moment just because like there's no
shock from her, there's no likethere's acceptance, there's only acceptance and love.
Because she hugs him, she's like, I'm so happy that you found

(09:20):
that and that was beautiful, Likeyou know, because sometimes I feel like
coming out in media is such abig deal. Yeah, they make like
they had like the very first timesomebody came out on film, what was
it? Ellen DeGeneres how to makea whole episode and then she got canceled.
And anytime there's a gay character that'scoming out, it's like a big

(09:41):
deal. And usually an episode, like on TV, you have a positive
response because that's what keeps people watching, and you don't want unlikable characters.
But sometimes most in real life, when you come out, it's not great,
right. You don't have that support, you don't have that understanding.
You don't get a hug and akiss. Sometimes you get kicked out and

(10:03):
you lose family and you have tofigure out life as like a person without
this support anymore. So it's reallynice to see it, but I'm like,
I like that it wasn't a bigdeal, Like that's who he is
and he's in love and I don'tknow. Meanwhile, on The Revenge,
Edward is wearing that beautiful silk robe, building blanket forts, keeping candles in

(10:28):
there. Lucius is called in tolike document everything, and Lucius knows the
deal like Lucius understands that black Beardand Steed were an item, and Lucius
is like, what's going on?Yeah, Lucius has been like the most
us aware and involved like in theirrelationship. He was there when they were
on that treasure hunt and like confrontedblack Beard about the feelings they have for

(10:54):
each other. And he was therefor their little breakup scene when Calico Jack
was there, and he delivers blackBeard's item to him, like he's been
like the third party of this relationshipthe whole time. Yeah, and then
black Beard is pretending like he's talkingabout someone else, but it's obviously him.
Oh and this piss is Izzy thefuck off that Blackbard is being emotional,
soft and honest in front of thecrew, letting them call him Edward

(11:18):
instead of being Blackbeard. Yeah, because Izz he is trying to like contain
this version of black Beard, likeyou know, tells Lucius to like not
speak of what he sees in thecaptain's cabin. Yeah, and is he
like confronts Blackbeard or Edward and getsa rise out of him, and he's
like, that's the guy want Idon't want that soft guy. I don't

(11:41):
know who that fuck that is?And I think is he has like this
sick obsession with Blackbeard and being mistreated. I think that's like some sort of
kink for him, like being asubordinate to like a powerful man, and
he gets what he wants. Theend, black Beard turns something about not

(12:03):
having steyed around makes him let goof that red silk fabric that he held
on too for so long that remindedhim of fine things and his innocence and
his liking for like softness, andhe lets it go. And then he
pushes Lucius off the ship, andwe don't know if Lucius can swim.

(12:24):
We don't know what's going to happento Lucius. He's gone. He's dead
according to Ed or black Beard now. And then he goes in and he
does his like scary boy montage wherehe like blackens his beard and does the
like I makeup. Yeah, hedoes his like rockstar makeup. Yeah Emo.
He's going emo, but like hardcorelike sadistic, because he like immediately

(12:50):
cuts off Izzy's toe and feeds itto him, and then Izzy, you
can tell a part of him islike thank god he's back. Yeah,
He's like willing to go through thislike humiliation and literal deformation in order to
have his version of black Beard thathe wants. But something's missing from this
black Beard, like he changes theflag. He's very emo, he's like

(13:15):
in his breakup era. But likeat the end of the show, he
was just crying in bed in thisempty room because he's like, we're getting
rid of all the Steed Bonnet shit. We're throwing out his books, all
his like freely clothes. Maybe Idon't know, like what is he getting
rid of? It looked like heiedthat room. Yeah, and yes,
so he's put on the black Beardpersona, the Craken persona, but it's

(13:39):
still him. He's still broken andnow he doesn't have Lucius to confine and
that's so sad, and it's like, what's going to happen? Like Steve
Bonnet comes back, Like he killshimself in order to go back to the
sea. I think Steed thought thatit was his duty to come back,
you know, to make things rightwith being the patriarch in his household.

(14:03):
And then it comes to find outthat him being a patriarch could have killed
him. And she's like, it'snot as dramatic, you know, it's
just as dramatic me murdering you asyou leaving for the fucking notion, like
I'm just meeting you where you're atbro And so he and his wife and
Doug and all them they can coctthis plan and they use that woman's leopard.

(14:26):
That lady is the lady from thirdthird Planet or whatever, third Rock
from the Sun. Yeah, Ilove her. I haven't seen her in
anything in so long. And she'sa fucking bitch and with an eyepatch and
a murder like murderous like vibe. She's so iconic. It was so like
I love the cameos in this. And then Doug is Eric from Tim and

(14:50):
Eric and he like makes her breakfastin bed and he's like so kind and
really understanding. I love that breakfastin bed moment you think it's just Steed
and then he's like, no,Doug made it. We've been talking.
You slept in honey. Uh.But yeah, I think this episode is

(15:11):
just so good. It's like, damn, it's like the cherry on top
of the cake that was the seasonwhere he's like finally free to go after
Edward. But now I'm like Edwardgonna accept him, Like what's gonna happen,
Like this is crazy. He abandonedlike his whole crew except for the
guy who could sew and the guywho he finds like, uh like worthy

(15:35):
of keep eating or something. Whydid he keep those two? Like,
I know why he kept Frenchy becausehe needed Frenchie's sewing nobilities to sew that
flag yeah one time. Like, yeah, frend She's got a lot to
prove. I feel like, well, Frenchie's like one of the smarter crew
members. Remember he was one ofthe guys who was scamming people. He

(15:56):
came up with that African Prince scam. So I feel like he's a pretty
good pirate compared to some of theothers. And I feel so bad for
them just getting left on that ohthat beach or that island, Yeah,
that tiny island that looks like it'slike something you would draw on a cartoon
of, like a little deserted island, a couple of trees. Yeah,

(16:18):
Frenchy and Jim like so they're partof the crew, but they still had
like guns trained on them during thatI guess, so they wouldn't try to
stop them from leaving or whatever. But back on the deserted island, they
don't. First they don't realize thatthey're being deserted. They're like, we're
doing talent show. What's his name? Black pizza, like all that white

(16:41):
makeup. Yeah, he looks likea fancyful like aristocrat, which thank god
because I was just worrying about thesunburn that some of them are going to
get. Oh yeah, and theydo. I feel like they had a
lot of so what is it theycall it self tanner? You know,
all like the ship that people puton like that. You could tell the

(17:03):
Swede had it like sick. Theyput a lot of that fake tan on
him and it looked good. Ithought I thought it was they were selling
like deserted and I don't know why, but I feel like Buttons is always
the one that's talking about, likewhen are we gonna start eating each other?
Yeah, that was one thing Iwrote down. There's like some good

(17:26):
callbacks in this episode. That's whatreally helps they like feel like a finale
because like, yeah, Buttons decidingthat they need to eat someone as soon
as they're stranded, and he hasthis chomp and teeth on, yeah,
those teeth that he used to biteLucien. And then with Steed taking his
own death and like doing the wholetheatrical thing and calling it a fuckery.
Yeah, like he could have justbeen you know, run over or kild

(17:51):
by that piano or he's like,I'm gonna be dead, bitch. I
don't know, but yeah, watchingNathaniel Buttons and Cookie, we're chasing the
suite around the deserted island to eathim, and then all of a sudden,

(18:11):
Aluwandi looks out of his looking glassand sees Steed coming towards them,
like crazy, that's crazy. He'sgonna come back and get there, get
his crew back. And he leftwithout a penny. Yeah, so now
he's broke, he's got no ship, and he's got like six crew members
to put on that dinghy. Yeah. So we'll see how it works.

(18:33):
But what a great ending. Idon't know. I'm like so excited for
the second season. It might takeanother year before that. No, they
already said they're not doing a newseason, right uh yeah, season three
looks very unlikely. Yeah. Soone other thing was the Jim came back
and we got Jim and Aliuwande reunitedin their room, in their room that

(18:56):
it's now been transferred back to Aluwande. I guess, yeah, I understand
that. I think so. Ithink he said that there was bad vibes
after the raid. Yeah, sothey're they're finally openly together with each other
and they hook up and fucking hLucius walks in on them. Yeah,
poor Lucius. I feel like hedid a lot this episode. Lucius didn't

(19:18):
know what a suck on the dormant, but if anyone knew, I feel
like it would have been lucious.Right, doesn't he always hook up with
that Black Pete or whatever. Yeah, oh, but they hook up with
people in the room. They don'tgive a fuck. But yeah, So
sadly, Jim and all the wanDay are separated. Black Pete doesn't have

(19:40):
Lucius anymore because he's thrown overboard, and nobody knows that yet, because even
Izzy was like, should I getthe boy? And he's like, no,
he's dead and that's it. That'sall we know. So sad I
hate it. I hate it here. I'm ready for the new episode to
maybe give me some light or understandingor clarity. Dang, what an ending,
What an iconic ending? Astoral queen? Who was the standout character in

(20:07):
the episode. Who's your astral Queen. Well, the two very separate storylines.
Yeah, it's kind of hard topick between the two of them,
but I feel like I wanted togo with the widow Mary. That's who
I wanted to say, the widowBonnet for living her best life and fucking
taking charge and almost murdering Steed butthen being able to hear him out and

(20:30):
understand him and give him like freedomas she would also gain it. It's
like mutual understanding. It was great. Yeah, the widow Bonnet. Yeah,
I mean I already said this, but their reconciliation was like one of
the more beautiful scenes of the series. Yeah, very powerful stuff. So
thank you, Mary, and we'llsee the rewards and the mail and you
don't have to share them with yourhusband. All right. Well that does

(20:52):
it for the main part of thisepisode, So we will be back to
cover season two. The first episodetitled Impossible Birds. Oh hold on,
do you want to talk about thepair the kids and the petrified Orange or
are we good? Oh? Imean sure if you want to. Not
really, I mean it was partof the plot and it was important somehow,

(21:14):
like callbacks. Yeah, that's anothercallback. Was that petrified Orange and
I guess his daughter came to likecare something about him. Yeah, we
those kids. I don't care aboutkids too much, didn't so yeah,
we just following energy. All right? Uh? Are we ready for what's
the next episode? Impossible Birds? Is that the new season? Yep?

(21:37):
Okay, let's put our living stereostylist in this group race for impact.
Spoilers ahead. If you haven't seenthe whole series, now is the time
to say goodbye. Remember you cancontact us at spacingoutcod at gmail dot com,
find us on social media, shareyour thoughts and be a part of

(22:02):
the discussion. Spoilers in five fourthree two one. So well do the
spoiler section. Do you have spoilers? Do we need to do this?
Or yeah I have one. Ijust want to say this final episode compared
to the second season is so differentbecause they're giving different vibes. Because one
is like we're hoping for a newseason. The next one is this is

(22:26):
this could be our final season,so we're going to finish it off nicely,
and it's like not as many looseends. It's it's more wrapped up
and it feels more complete, whereasthis one it feels like yearning for more.
I obviously want more in general, but you know you can't leave this
episode as the final one, right, I mean you would hope there would

(22:48):
be something to give more closure, yeah after this. Yeah, So that's
all I wanted to say for spoilersis like second season is, it's really
good, but the ending is morewell rounded and more of a finishing piece
where it's like you're accepting the end, whereas this one, I cannot accept
the sending because you just have toknow how Steve found them on that dingy

(23:10):
well. I just want to knowwhat's gonna happen, Like what's gonna happen
between Steed and and Blackbeard slash edYou know what is gonna happen? Like
is he gonna fucking kill him whenhe finds him? Like is Edward gonna
literally murder Steve Bonnet? Or isit gonna be like this beautiful love story
again. Obviously we know from watchingthe second season that there's there's tension,

(23:36):
but it gets eased because Steed andEdward are meant to be. If I
was Steed when I finally met upwith black Beard, I'd just be like,
hey, sorry, I was late. I got caught trying to escape,
then everything would be fine. Yeah, but Steed Bonnett doesn't know how
to apologize. No, he does, see in this episode he's like,
I accept your apologies. Yeah right, I forgive you for being a cow

(23:57):
or whatever, for for sleeping withDoug. What else? I was going
to mention Ivan, the crew memberon a black Beard's crew, we always
see him with faying this is thelast time we see him. He's not
in season two. Is kind ofkill him off screen, the one with
the moon on his here. Ohyeah, yeah, that's sad. Why

(24:19):
that sucks. I'm excited for Luciusto come back traumatized though, so sad,
so sad for that trauma. Yeah, and when when the crews finally
reunite, Like there's a lot oftension between those who were with black Beard
and those who were not because theyhad very different experiences. Yeah, but
I don't know that we ever seeMary again or the kids. But I

(24:41):
don't think so rapped up that arc. I think, yeah, it's done,
it's in the past. So yeah, I mean, I don't I
don't have anything else to say.I don't need to explain a lot of
season two or anything. So I'mexcited for We're going to meet some new
characters. Yeah. I like thenew characters in the next season. I'm
excited to see the Chinese pirate queenAllo on me. He's just like so

(25:03):
simple sometimes that he doesn't realize thathe's adorable. Yeah, all right,
Uh, let's uh mutiny, Idon't know. Well, all right,
Well that does it for us.Then our reminder is going to be another
week or two before covering season two. And thanks for sailing on the revenge.
Remember murder is a natural cause.Yeah, thank you for spacing out

(25:26):
with zeb and Jason. You canhelp us out by subscribing and leaving a
positive rating or review. Next time, we will cover our Flag Means Death
