(00:00):
Missus Hill, would you say yourhusband has a bad temper? Who Hank?
No, Hank is as general asa lamb. No more bouncing that
ball. We have a visitor. What you're listening to? Son? How
did you like it? Welcome toSpeaking of the Hill and Australian King of
(00:21):
the Hill podcast, where we goback and revisit every episode of the iconic
series. And of course this beingthe first public review that we're doing,
we're going to be reviewing the veryfirst episode of King of the Hill.
It is the pilot aka Bobby theBaseball Phenome. I'm dead, I am
guy. I did not know itwas also known as Bubbly the Baseball Phenom.
Well, this is little things littlewebsite you see, mister Davis called
King of the Hill dot fandom dotcom, slash wiki and it has a
(00:44):
bunch of trivia here which comes invery handy for someone like myself, who,
as we said on our Welcome toSpeaking of the Hill podcast, didn't
necessarily grow up the show it wason, but I never really watched it.
It wasn't really my thing. I'veobviously since discovered it now after this
podcast and absolutely loving it. Ilove this pilot episode, but I'm here
to have a whole range of triviawhich are going to be delving into throughout
this podcast. But one of thethings is that this episode was also known
(01:07):
as Bobby the Baseball phename a veryhelpful and useful resource for us to cheat
sheet off. So fantastic, Veryglad that that exists, Very glad that
you brought to my attention, andvery very glad that we're doing the King
of the Hill podcast. This isa like you dando, It's not necessarily
a show that was in my rotation, but it is in my rotation going
(01:30):
forward, partly because we're doing apodcast about it, mostly because it's a
very enjoyable show. It really is, and thinking to everyone who has tuned
into not just this episode but ourprevious episode, the welcome to Speaking of
the Hill and everyone who has followedus on Twitter at Kotch Underscore Pod.
We could also follow us. Thisis part of the four Finger discount networks
at four Finger Pod. You canfollow us there as well, or King
of the Hill Mailbag at gmail dotcom if you do want to get in
(01:53):
touch with us. I've had plentyof people right in and we're gonna be
getting too some of those mail bagquestions and just kind words from listening later
in the podcast. So King ofthe hillmailback at gmail dot com. Yes,
this episode and this show in general, like I said in our first
episode, was that I can seewhy I didn't like it when I was
a kid, but I'm watching thisnow and it's like you get old enough
to realize that you've become Hank,Like, oh, yeah, he confused
(02:16):
with what's going on the world aroundYou don't understand things anymore. It's kind
of like that Grandpas Simpson moment. No, it used to be with it,
but then they change what it wasthat, yeah, it'll happened to
be It's happened to me. Yeah. But that's a good thing though,
because it means I relate to HankHill, and I really really enjoy this.
This opening episode, this I thoughtwas just so great, done a
really good job of just introducing notjust the Hill family but essentially the main
(02:38):
cast. Although the friends still kindof come across like but Dale we get
a little bit fleshed out there withthe with the John Redcorn things like that,
but I thought the friends were kindof just like goofuses in this pilot.
They won't really they didn't give himmuch substance, but of course this
is the pilot the hill. HankHill is king of the Hill, so
it's going to focus on him,and I thought they did a really good
job of really making him are relatableand bitter towards a well, but in
(03:02):
a funny way where it wasn't bitterto the point where you didn't like him.
He was just bitter at things thatwe are also bitter. Add Yeah,
I wouldn't call him bitter so muchas kind of bewildered, which does
bleed into into bitterness. Yeah, because you're like, I know, I
used to have a handle on thingsand now everything's different and confusing. You're
(03:22):
raised a really interesting and valid pointabout how you eventually become a Hank.
But another thing is you can alsomaybe look at your dad or both of
your parents even and sort of understandwhere they're coming from as well. That
we're the bit older you get. You're watching this to kids, you're probably
going, Wow, what a grumpyold bugger. And oh, you know,
(03:43):
you know Peggy Hills alone, Yeah, not a whole lot to her.
And then when you get a littlemileage on the media, you realize,
oh no, it's just a wholecase of still waters running deep,
or somebody who has emotions but it'snot necessarily all that well versed in the
expressing them all that kind of business. That's it's it's great. I just
think it's such a cool thing fora show that was coming out, like
(04:05):
we said in our last episode, coming out during peaks Simpsons time. All
the Simpsons wasn't peaks into this time, everyone was still watching The Simpsons.
Would have been like season eighties orwhatever, seven eight to be so different
from the Simpsons, you know, not just visually, but just the opening
shot for example, right when it'spanning down, the first thing you see
is the Island water tower, right, which I just think it was just
great because you think of like justsmall town Texas, you think of water
(04:27):
towers, Daniel, Right, Let'sjust it's a great opening shot. But
the pan down, right, Soif this was The Simpsons, there would
have been all these different visual gags, people doing funny shit as we got
to the four guys. No,it was just people cleaning their pool,
mow on their lawns, just everydaylife. And that's what this show is
it's just everyday life. Well, yeah, something I wrote. Actually my
first note is, yeah, well, similar to the Simpsons open and you
(04:49):
get you get an idea or acertainly the opening credits or the Simpsons,
and you get a sense of theplace. Yeah, but done in a
very very different way where it's yeah, you're right. I mean they're not
sort of playing up the gags oranything like. That's just like, this
is where we're at, and thefact that it's not playing up the gags
sort to give you an idea ofthe sense of humor. It's going to
(05:09):
be very low key. You know, the gags probably won't go over here
because they're not aiming that high. They're just going to just mosey on by.
It's almost small. It's funny thatthey point out sci Felt on this.
It's more like Sciinfeld than the Simpsonsthat you think, where it's every
day little things that annoy you,but you're like, hey, that annoys
me too. It's very much sortof shooting it shot or calling it shot
(05:30):
with that with the four friends arestanding around the engine, you know,
and everyone sort of gets their momentto a little thumbnail sketch of what they're
like but yeah, to round roundout that sequence with the New York Boys,
just to show about nothing. That'sgreat. And I guess that you
(05:53):
that was kind of like Mike Judge'sway of sort of saying, this show
is going to be similar. Ithink so, yeah, yeah, but
I mean I don't think that's whatanybody expected. I think when you were
thinking of an animated comedy in thein the late nineties, you're probably thinking
of either The Simpsons or probably SouthPark. I mean, when did when
did this premiere? When did thisair episode? And I believe it was
(06:15):
in It was definitely ninety seven.Thing was February. Them just double checked
that it was January twelfth, nineteenninety seven. It was literally yeah,
a month ago, a month ago, twenty six years ago. Yeah,
one time. Yeah. Yeah.So I'm name checking a show about nothing.
It's like, oh okay, oh, it's playing in that ballpark.
But at the same time, it'syou know, using a different medium and
(06:38):
certainly setting in a different milieu soto speak. It's very much my jobs
Mike Judge saying, I know youthink you wanted a Simpsons knockoff sort of
but not really. Well, it'sit's middle class because they're sort of they're
living the same lifestyle that Simpsons wouldlead, but in a real way.
Oh yeah, yeah, I supposeyou call it middle class. Yeah,
(07:00):
sort of. It feels working class, but working class enough to have a
little bit more of a reach towardsthe American dream, if you know what
I mean. Yeah, yeah, that's and that's Hank Stream as well.
He's very pro America. And maybemaybe I just did. I just didn't
get so much of the humor inthis, But boy did I get it
when I am. When I wentback and revisited these notes, but I've
just got here. It feels liketo me that this one here, the
(07:21):
humor in this show isn't the punchline. It's the funny because it's true angle
there's there's one. There's like pointshere where when I was a kid watching
this, I wouldn't have got it. Right. So when he listens to
the funny phone or the phone jerkguys whatever they've got the funny phone jokes
or whatever, and as he walksoff, that boy aunt right, like
(07:41):
that just tickled me, Like justthe delivery from my judge, but just
that that boy aunt right. I'mlike sometimes Aliott does shit and I'm like,
what the fuck are you doing, buddy? Yeah? Yeah, And
I mean being around of the nineties, I mean I absolutely listen to the
Jerky Boys, who was you know, that's basically what the funny phone jerkes
are ripping off, you guy.It would just make prank phone calls and
record it and yeah, a bitof a moment in the spotlight. I
(08:07):
mean, the Jerky Boys actually gota movie made out of them out of
the Yeah Antics. That's why Ilaughed so much at that moment as well,
because when obviously I had never seenthis before, and when that fast
sound came out, I was like, oh, that's so great because that's
what I just listened to when Iwas a kid. So I love it.
I buy into this from Bobby's perspectiveand then Hank's reaction to it.
I'm like, that's how I reactto it now. Yeah. But at
the same time, I mean, now that I've hit the back nine of
(08:30):
my life, so to speak,I'll be Yeah, occasionally I'll something I
will wander in my YouTube algorithm orwhatever. I mean like this, this
is what the kids are into. Why are you laughing at this? Not
funny? What's this toptic? Who'sthis mister beast? Person doesn't look like
a beast. It's going on?So yeah, I mean I definitely,
(08:52):
I definitely identify with Yeah, Hankwalking Way. Something wrong with the kids
today. They're buoyant rat. Yeah, I'm gonna try and work this out.
Is I'm just gonna leave. Oneof the best things that you can
that you can have or hold ontoas you get older, is like three
words not for me, not forme. Yeah, and that's it.
I'm out of here. Yeah,I mean, I don't get it.
(09:13):
Sometimes you might get lucking it's like, oh no, I understand where you're
coming from. I get it,But not for me, it's like ten
words. I don't get it.I don't need to get it. What
did you think of the overall storyof the episode. I thought it was
pretty bold to go with the CPSstory right from the gate go. Yeah,
very much. I mean, Ithink one thing certainly that sets The
(09:33):
King of the Hell apart from maybea lot of comedies is that it's a
fairly conservative approach. What our Americanfriends Michael read state, I don't have
to don't have time for like touchyfeely politically correct kind of stuff. I
mean, they're not you know whatwe generally refer to as old writer or
anything like that. But it's justlike, just be practical, be sensible.
(09:54):
Well, it's more a case off. Hanky sort of sees a guy
who he's not deliberately racist. Hejust doesn't understand yet, but if you'd
show him the way, he's notgoing to dislike as we find out,
and I think it's like episode sevenor whatever, when Khan and his family
arrived, he's like, he's notracist, but he's just he's lived this
life, he lived in this townhis whole life, Like this is all
he knows he needs. Once hiseyes have been opened, He's like,
(10:15):
Okay, I understand, yes,but I mean I think it's it's summed
up very well in the line whenthe you know, the social worker's coming
over and you know, trying toget to the bottom of you know,
why Bobby's got a black eye andall that stuff, and Hank says,
that's not my assertion, that's whathappened. He's very sort of like,
not a lot of shades are graycertainly this day to the proceedings, Why
(10:39):
do you write in all these wordsfor you just need one word no,
And to make the social work kindof the butt of the joke in a
lot of ways because he's, youknow, yeah, clearly someone who means
well but is also kind of shit. They make they make him the bad
guy here. He's just as Isay, you're classic. The Simpsons kind
of did this as well, whereand I guess the Simpsons have had more
(11:01):
of a reason to take the kidsaway because they arrived than the Maggie drinking
the dog water and she has thestumpid baby lapel to her. But see,
the Simpsons had the stupid babies needthe most attention. They dumbed it
down in the Simpsons as well, but they dunned them down to a comic
side with this guy here just cameacross like a guy who was just really
bad at his job. He wasjust lazy where he just he went there
just wanting to find the faults witheverything, as opposed to actually get to
(11:24):
the very smarmy, smart, Yeah, someone who's definitely read the playbook,
like, yeah, okay, thisis what I should do in situation lad.
I don't think he's necessarily a badguy. I think he sees what
he perceives as about situation, buthe automatically leaps to, you know,
the worst conclusions, probably because he'sfrom Las point out regularly is like,
(11:46):
okay, yeah, he's from LaLa Land. He's not really dawn with
the way actual flesh and blood peopleconduct themselves on a daily basis. Just
having the carpal tunnel braces on hisarms and he's typing and things like that,
just little little things. Thought thatwas hilarious. I just loved when
he took them off, and becausethey got no sympathy for his R side.
(12:09):
Fuck dude. Yeah, I thoughtAnthony. Anthony was his name,
I thought, and he does returnin season two, and I believe in
season eleven as well. I justthought Anthony was just such a good foil
for Hank. Yeah, very muchso that it was really good. If
you want to essentuate what who Hankis, He's the kind of person you
(12:30):
want him to be in a roomwith. But this is who. This
is what Hank thinks modern America islike this guy, Oh Rob, this
crap. What are your favorite momentsfrom the episode. Um, look,
I love my dad very much andmy dad loved me very much, but
he was not necessarily type to sortof grabbing a big bag and say I
(12:50):
love your son, because I knewhe did anyway, and likewise I was
not wanted to grab him and tobe I love you dad. I think
my dad and your dad come froma similar sort of generation in the sensense
likes we don't tell our boys thatwe love them. They just know it.
They just know it. Yeah, and you show them by you know,
either putting a roof over their head. You know it's not showing tell's
(13:13):
to show very good way of puttingit down exactly right. So the whole
thing with Hank remembering his dad,who you know, got his shins blown
off by japan Man's machine, andthen yeah, Hank's trying to sort of
undo that programming although he thinks, well, you know my dad raised me
right, I mean, I turnedout okay. But for him to sort
of try and get the words outor you know, find a way to
(13:37):
express how he feels about his sonwithout actually having to say it, you
know, feelings are fondest. Ijust thought that was a crag. How
about the sound that he made,I reckon, Mike Judge was when he
was doing the voice just accidentally madea sound and then ad libbed and never
made that before. That feels soperfect for the moment. But I also
just love that when he gets itout, I love you no matter what
(13:58):
you do with that. Now,let's go get something doing. So yeah,
all of that, that's probably myfavorite part of the episode. What
about you? That all that endingI thought was just yeah, very very
sweet. I watched it and Iwas like, Okay, I get this,
this this is great. Um.I really enjoyed the funny phone jokes,
which has become a meme. HankHill listening to things. I think
that's now popular meme. A lotof the way he's going through the other
megalo mart I hate this place that'sme going through, like Bunnings or just
(14:20):
Big SuperMUC and was like, fuckinghate this place. I hate people hate
being in. Oh, by theway, an update if you are listening
to other shows on the four fingerdiscount network, and I forgotten exactly which
one I talked about this song, but I did make the trip out to
Bunnings and I did buy the drill. Oh you did well done. The
drill is still in the box.I don't know when the drill is going
(14:43):
to come out of the Box seasontwo. I was speaking at the Hill
see Opening the Box indeed, butit might have been on a four finger
Discount or one of our other shows, one of our many other shows that
we do on the four finger Discountnetwork, where I talked about how I'd
bought floating shelves that need to bedrilled into the wall. I bought those
like maybe six months ago. Ifinally took them out of the box and
(15:05):
then realized near a drill. Putthese into the wall. When bought a
drill, drillstoll on the box.So come back in six months and the
drill will be out of the boxand I'll be I don't know, watching
YouTube videos on how to get thatworking. But I just thought i'd bring
you up to speed with home handywork at the Davis household. As guy
dis mansioned. If you have justlistened to this podcast, you don't know
(15:26):
the other shows we do. Hearin the fourthinger discount network. We do
obviously fourthing a discount Simpsons podcast talkingSeinfeld. You're a fan of Seinfeld.
I'm assuming if you like King ofthe Hill, you probably don't like Seinfeld
too. Very similar in humor inmany ways. So Talking Seinfeld is available
now for free. Also got GoingDown to South Park another show to add
at the same time, so verylate nineties on nineties bass shows. I
also do the one about Friends withmy wife Nicola. And if you are
(15:48):
a supporter of ours on Patreon, you get access to our view reviews for
the movie Guys, as well asthe show that I love the most,
Tales of Future Rama, where werevisit every episode of Future MA lot of
shows, a lot of shows youon the fourth disc, plenty of content
to get. Yeah, get yourears around. But yeah, I really
enjoyed. So I said that Ihate this place. I really enjoyed.
Thanks for the Larte Kenneth. I'mlike Larte and Kenneth, like, fuck,
(16:11):
that's so good it is. AndI mean, we're all drinking Larte's
these days, and I think Larde'ssort of being phased out as shorthand for
in a City softy or something likethat. But back in ninety seven,
I was like, oh, Larte, Kenneth and Kenneth, Any Kenneth's out
there. I apologize it, justit just sounded funny at the time.
(16:33):
Larta and Kenneth together. Yeah.I loved Brittany Murphy in this as well
as Luanne. I thought she wasso good. But I love in particular
the woman she goes and my weekthen I styled for my class is ruined
and then thanks like I don't knowwhat to do here, you can use
my tools. I just love thedelivery of her saying how her wig got
(16:55):
ruined. I got ruined in thecar accident that happened, I thought,
man, Brittany Murphy just adds hishome element to it, to this character
where she could have come across thisblonde ditsy and she does, but she
does it in such a loving waywhere you're not laughing at her, you're
laughing with her. It's it's it'sreally really well done by Britney Murphy.
And plus I really liked the whenHank's trying to to tell Bobby to behave
(17:15):
himself with the garage door. It'sjust so very hanky. I'll please return
the garage to its factory pre setdown position. Please respect my fences right
to be a fence. Yeah, thank you, thank you. Yeah yeah,
yeah. Look. I will probablygo on at length about Brittany Murphy
as we continue this podcast. Butyeah, I mean it's such a shadow,
(17:36):
isn't it just a great, greatloss? Because I think she would
just would have had a wonderful, wonderful your career going forward. Uh.
And I just love the bit she'stalking about I borrowed your truck, uncle,
Hank. The break there's something aboutthe break line? Was they but
I blew a clean? Yeah?Good on. I wouldn't know what to
do. So she's she's supposed tobe like this blonde dits of her,
(17:57):
like a teenage character. But shefixed the car that Hank couldn't fix and
his friends couldn't fix. But apparentlythat's an aspect of the character they never
delve into, since she doesn't reallyknow much about cars going forward. But
here, I thought that would havebeen a nice way for them to maybe
bond going forward, but apparently theydon't. They don't stick to it.
So there you go. Do youwant to get into it? Me to
get into a few more little trivianotes about this episode before we get into
(18:18):
our trivia, of course, gorun ahead, all right? So,
as I said, Anthony, thecaseworker He's the appears in another episode in
season two called junkie business. Buthe also appears very much like a character
from Office Space. Do you knowwhich character, Michael Bolton, Yes,
yes, so Sherman. Sherman, who voices the character Anthony. They based
(18:38):
the character design on the way heappears in Office Space, also says here
the Greg Daniels, who was theshowrunner at the time, my co creator
slash showrunner. The original script,as we discussed, had Hank more bitter
and not very likable, and theexecutives are Fox were like, I think
this needs to be changed, becauseapparently he was more short tempered and more
(19:00):
like Tom Anderson, mister Tom Andersonfrom Beavers And butthead now like, if
he's going to be a character thatit's going to be the main star of
this show, he's got to belikable to any stand You can't be like,
can't be the man you love tohate. Yeah, exactly. So
that's where Greg Daniels really came inand really changed the Hank character. I
thought, I remember saying in thelast episode that he didn't want to change
Hank, he wanted to change theworld around him. But it seems he
didn't change some aspects of his character, and Boy It's a good thing that
(19:22):
he did, because it seems likeGreg Daniels is like the lord and savior
of this show. Like sounds likehe really made the show, Like might
Judge, you know, he puthe built the skeleton, and Greg Daniels
really fleshed it out and made itthe show that it went on to become.
Yeah, Mike Judge built the house. Greg Daniels decorated it. I
am a proud ignorant woman, andno one is going to change that.
Now. That is the stupidest thingI ever heard anyone say. All Right,
(19:47):
it's time for our very first triviahere on Speaking of the Hill.

(21:38):
mister Davis, do you have anyquestions for me? So many? All
right? Hit me so many? All right? Let's begin. According to
Dale, what does ford stand forhim? Oh? He does say it
fix it again, Tony, Youmean a fear that means thank? You
(21:59):
mean a fear by the way thatyes better only if you're displeased with your
Ford. Ford stands for fix orrepair daily? Oh is that what it
is? Okay, so Dale gothis thing is confused. So my first
question is what number does Bobby haveon his baseball uniform? Oh? Man,
oh, how did I not knowthat you would ask me that kind
(22:21):
of question? And of course Idid not know the answer. I'm gonna
throw a bunch of I'm gonna throwsome dice. I'm gonna say three.
Well done. He was actually aguess? Or did you just no?
I think I knew subconsciously and Iwas just damping until I get to access
it. Yeah, getting out ofmy rom I'm rustling the key in the
(22:41):
lock until it fit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And my next question
for you, when Bobby is watchingTV, he sees a crying man who
has undergone what surgical procedure? Andno surgery that he did not ask for?
That's correct, an unnecessary knows jobthat poor man? Poor man?
What a sweet? What temperature insummer? What temperature does it get in
(23:04):
summer? It's it's this in summerin Texas already? What is it?
It's one hundred and ten degrees yes, fahrenheit, which I think it's going
to be in the in the midforties cells. It sounds about right.
Let's have a look, one hundredand ten fahrenheit to Celia's gonna say forty
three point three, so you're prettywell close. Yeah, well done doing
(23:26):
well numbers today. My next questionfor you is what kind of car does
Anthony the social Worker drive? Ah? Shit, oh, geo geo,
yes, because he didns it.My next one is I've already spoiled that
one. Who got the latte forAnthony Hills Kenneth? Here's one I thought,
(23:47):
throw in a really hard one,a freeze framer that I thought.
I don't know whether you get itor not, but I thought it in
there anyway, right at the veryend. What's the license plate of the
bus? I did see it goingaway? It starts with a C,
doesn't EP seven nine five. Ithought that might have been in production code
or something, but it doesn't seemthat way. Is that it for questions
anymore? I'll ask you one more, Yeah, ask you one more.
The domestic dramas at Luane's parents' houseis going to be on What Shows.
(24:12):
It's a real show apparently, andthat's something. The high it's a highway
patrol um close. You're good nowwork backwards, so kings of Highway patrol
or something. Real stories of thehighway patrol stories, real stories. You
know, she's getting real when you'rewatching real stories. None of those fake
stories that we've been showing. Realstories. All right, So that is
(24:34):
trivia for the pilot episode AKA Bobbythe what the baseball phenome? Is that
what I said? It was calledbaseball phenome? Yeah? All right,
guys, we'll be right back afterthis shot break with our in depth review
of the episode. Sticking Out.Speaking of the Hill is brought to you

The original air day of the pilotepisode of King of the Hilm was January
twelfth, nineteen ninety seven. Itwas written by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels
and directed by the legendary Wes Archer, who has worked on He had previously
worked on The Simpsons for our long, long time, one of the original
(26:45):
animators of the Simpson original directors ofthe Simpsons. So we have to get
Wes arch on the show sometime ifwe can make that happen. Now.
Apparently this pilot episode had nineteen pointnine million viewers. There's a lot of
viewers in the US watching this episode. Can you was it a big deal
when it was first announced King ofthe Hill? Like, was it?
Was there excitement in the show ordid Everyone was just like, Nah,
(27:06):
the Simpsons is King, that's true. But you come with the King you
best known miss Yeah. I thinkbecause it's so specific in its location and
its attitude and that kind of thing, SI felt similar. I think sci
fi didn't really explode in Australia tothe extent and it did in the US
because it's very New York humor, isn't it true? Yeah? Yeah,
(27:26):
I mean the bulk of your sitcomsin the eighties up until that point let's
say, or even beforehand, wereusually very middle America, nuclear family loving
buffoon of a father, not evena buffoon usually. I mean the ones
i'm thinking of that were sort oflike the one two Punch in the eighties
of like really successful sitcoms were familyties and growing Pains, and they essentially
(27:51):
have the same family dynamic and inthe in the in their setup it was
you know, mum and dad andthree kids and um. Yeah, very
very generic, very vanilla. Everyonecould sort of well university if you're a
white middle class, Yeah, youcould relate for something that seems very Texas,
(28:15):
like King of the Hillman. Yeah, yeah, it might be.
Well, this is a bit toospecific for me, so I think it
took a little while for people toto warm to it. Although might have
been put off by a little bit. It wasn't quite as huge as say
something like The Simpsons were just hitwith a tsunami of both paid publicity in
(28:37):
terms of its marketing campaign and alsofree publicity in terms of magazine articles and
things like that, and everyone doingthe bart Man and whatnot. Yeah,
this was more like I think wesaid this on our introductory episode. If
you knew about it or if youknew, you knew, it's like,
oh, it's a new thing bythe guy beavers and buttheads. But it
was actually a bit smarter than itlooked. Maybe this is as well,
(28:59):
and it is, but it's andrealize it. Oh, it absolutely is.
I think it took people a littlewhile to twigg to that. Do
you think because we've had now inlike an entire generation of American television shoved
down not shut down, that throwsWe can pick and choose what we want
to watch the these days, butthe whole generation of kids who have grown
up with King of the Hill.Do you think a King of the Hill
started now kids would appreciate it ordo you think it's still one of those
(29:21):
shows it's just got to be thatlittle bit older to really understand it.
I really think you've got to bea bit older. I think too,
because Hank is like the start ofthe show. We're see the Simpsons for
the first couple of seasons, Bartwas the star, and then a transition
to Homer, but home is stillby season ten, he's almost got the
brain capacity of Bart. You know. Yeah, it's almost the other way
around with King of the Hill.I mean, not the Bobby's the star,
(29:42):
but Bobby's kind of the glue.Yeah, and I think the one
that view a lot of viewers sortof took to their heart. And that's
that's a lot of credit to mto the voice as well. Oh yeah,
absolutely such it. And by theway, we haven't mentioned that that's
returning. See we go back,We start talk tells Vidurama, we're going
to bake Futurama. We start speakingof the Hill. Hey guys, we're
(30:03):
bringing back Key on the Hill.Hey guys, let us know King of
the Hill, Gmail dot com. What other shows do you want brought back?
We'll start a podcast about it.But I was very glad to see
that the cast who are still withus, I believe the majority of them
are returning for the King of theHill revival. And that's um, It's
gonna be very interesting to see HankHill in twenty twenty three, don't you
(30:23):
think like he'm seeing his reaction toTikTok and things like that and just not
getting I think I feel like it'sgoing to be such a show that I
gravitate towards because he's going to misunderstandand not get everything that I don't get
now, but also just the wayparticularly America has been over the last oh
yeah, true ten years, perhapssince twenty sixteen. It feels like patriotism
(30:45):
has almost laughed at now in America, where even back in ninety seven it
was everyone's patriotic. Now it's likeand if you want patriotic, you were
the old one out. Now it'salmost like the other way around, isn't
it. Oh? I think it'salmost like you've got some factions that are
very America and some factions are America. Yeah, that's what it seems like.
Anyone not saying that's what it is. That's what it comes the way
(31:07):
it comes across anyway, just like, oh god, bloody America. But
but yeah, so this episode, yeah, as we said add in nine
hundred and seven January, and theopening shot is under the penning shot that
we discussed earlier with the with thewater tower and people just doing every day,
everyday things, not comedy, it'sjust people living their lives. And
in turn, I watch it andgo, I like this, this feels
(31:29):
like it makes it feel homely.I'm like, okay, you're not trying
to get a laugh out of me. I can It's almost like you can
breathe more watching King of the Hillthan say, like sometimes the Simpsons you're
watching, particularly the early ones,it's like, oh god, it's a
laugh a second, you know. It's like LA's like, oh, I
can't relax, it's too much laughing. Where this one that's like there's gonna
be a laugh every minute, butthe rest of it you're gonna be just
like, oh yeah, this justfeels like this feels like it's loame like
life. Just let it breathe,Yeah, let it breathe. Yeah,
(31:52):
definitely. To get the mosquito andit's flying around and lands on Hank's neck,
he squashes it. Yep, yeah, yep. Mmmmm. I thought
this was the perfect way to openit up, just the four guys saying
yep, but then boom, howewith it. It's just to just to
(32:15):
say this guy's different, he's notthree blokes and then boom, how it's
just and the His voice was basedon a voicemail that might Judge received once
from something like a drunken fan whodidn't like um Beavers and Budhead and caught
it something else. It wasn't thattribute age. Let me I will find
it basically, and he talked aboutdudes and really fine. Remember, and
(32:35):
he's like, I knew what hewas trying to say, but I'm gonna
pick up like every two or threewords. But it's like that's who he
based boom Hower on. Oh mygosh, that's great. Yeah, because
yeah, I'm a big fan ofboom Ower just based on this first episode,
even just the whole It's just it'sso good, isn't it. Yes,
if boom how is fast talking originatedfrom an angry fame message might Judge
(32:57):
received about beavers and butthead, whichthe caller referred to as Porky's bunghole,
and it's controversial content. So yeah, he's just like Porky Bunghole. It's
like, you got the show completelywrong. But it's just that just it
was so funny to me and it'sjust stayed with me that that's where boom
Hower was born. And yeah, like you said, boom Hower, I
watched it like the first half anhour of the first season, and he
(33:20):
comes across as such it's almost likea Lenny, I want to say,
of the King of the Hill world, where he's easy going, he's just
he's ready to go with the flow, and it's just yeah, And that's
very much like Lenny, like he'sjust you know, he's just he's just
there for a good time. He'slike, um, you know, whatever
you guys want to do, I'lldo it too. I'm just I'm just
I just want I just want friendsbasically. Um. But yeah, So
we get them looking at the carand this is very much like guy standing
around that. You see this oftenstanding around a car, but the standing
(33:42):
around to barbecue, just watching aguy cooked meat. M want to turn
those sausages there. Everyone's an expert. Yeah, you turn to barbee,
you turn to barbecue on and guysjust stand around bears in hand. It's
like, yep, I'm not doingnothing, but I feel like I'm part
of the job here that you probablyturned that steak over, the probably do
it of a turn. Yeah, you give it a good job. Meanwhile,
you have not to stereotype anybody, but yeah, the women in the
(34:07):
kitchen doing ninety percent of the workin terms of like make a potato salad
and all that kind of business. And bring me the oil, bring me
some paper towel. I'm doing something, I'm helping. I'm helping and prepare
this meal. Yeah, yeah,I'm the guys. The guy's proadribution.
Know. Sometimes it's like I dowant me to go get the tray for
the meat like that that's their jobs. Oh yeah, I'll get there and
(34:28):
it's like hey, Peggy busses thetray please, here you go me.
But then they'll try to guess what'swrong with the cards we are saying.
You know, it's that damn startingmode, getting good compression, and then
we get so Dale here. Whatdo you think of Dale as a character
in this opening if you're just watchingthis, you know, in it's in
a vacuum, this opening episode, this pilot episode. I think I think
(34:49):
everyone's got at least one friend whoknows what's going on, quote unquote,
ye in there, they know what'sgoing on. You don't know. I
know, you should be listening tome, and you're friends enough, and
you're friendly enough, or you've gotenough history that you go maybe I believe
there's maybe I don't, but thisis my mate, all right, and
they've got enough stuff, and they'vegot enough black in the ledger, then
(35:09):
we're okay, Well, yeah Ican I'll stand by and I will tune
out when you're doing your more excessiveconspiracy theory stuff. I mean, I
got one or two friends like thatwho aren't necessarily fall on conspiracy theories,
but they're kind of like they'll takeissue with certain things and it's not being
here. But then you know it'sbecause of that, right, Well,
(35:30):
maybe if you say something, well, yeah, look by all means think
that you know, I know,I quite I found out kind of amusing
and kind of fun. I thinkit's great that, like, like you
said, Dale, he's one ofthose people that knows everything, but he
can't see right in front of himthat his wife's having an affair and he's
his kid is clearly not his child. Like it's just like so great the
(35:52):
guy who can see all these conspiraciesthat no one else can see, but
he can't see what's right, andhaving by in front him so consumed by
the conspiracies. But then um butthen boom, how it gives his thoughts
and he's just you can't understand wherehe's saying. Basically, I wish it
was that simple, boom Hower, and then he says he chucks need leadership.
It's very much like what Hank's basedaround. He says, like leadership,
American's good leadership. Well, okay, let's okay, this premiered in
(36:14):
ninety seven, and we're going toassume that Hank is I'm thinking of his
age, he'd be maybe early forties. I'm thinking like forty two, forty
three, Texas forty two forty three, been in the sun a bit.
And okay, so do a littleversion during born in the forties. Yeah,
(36:37):
grew up in the AD in anage of American exceptionalism, you know,
when America was leading the way inso many ways. Yea, And
yeah, even as it's funny, this is all pre September eleven and pre
twenty first century, when things startedto sort of, I don't know,
crumble a little bit. I'm actuallyinterested to see whether they do episodes not
(37:00):
based on September eleven, but whetherthat sort of gets worked into the show
at all. I think it's goingto have to be absolutely But yeah,
at this stage of the game,I mean, you know, it's the
late nineties. Everything's running real smoothly, and especially for America, America's leading
the world. So yeah, evenwhen there are times when it seems like,
oh those I heard things about Chinaor oh, you know, Japan's
(37:22):
making better cars, and was like, yeah, but you know, we
started all that America, so Ithought this was America. Yeah, Or
he'd be the kind of guy whomaybe would say, you know, you
wouldn't be any you. I'll bespeaking German of a one for us.
Yeah, I think you'd be thatkind of guy. And I don't necessarily
mean that as a sledge or asan insult. I mean there are just
(37:43):
people who that was the belief, born or raised a certain way and lived
in a certain era and had acertain mindset as a result. Well,
I was always raised not always race, but when I was growing up,
it always felt like America was theleader of the world. Oh yeah.
Now it's kind of like you don'treally know who's running the world anymore.
It's like, is anyone really runningthe world? Yeah, it's a world
(38:04):
of leader we need the world needsleadership. Last think we're no one looking
at I don't think you necessarily lookat say Jeff Bezos as even American.
He's more like a citizen of theUnited States of Amazon or the president.
Yeah, yeah, of the UnitedStates of Amazon. Likewise, likewise with
Elon Musk, it's like, Okay, yeah, he was born in South
(38:25):
Africa and I guess he's American now, But really he's just kind of,
you know, the Emperor of Muskville. The thing is, maybe we should
have just listened to Beyonce back inthe day. Maybe it's just girls just
running the world. Well they reallydo, really did they run in my
life anyway? But yeah, weget here. I mentioned of George Bush
vomiting on the audio executives in Japan. Didn't happen. Apparently he vomited on
(38:45):
like the Prime minister or something,George Bush something like, yeah, he
vomited on the Prime Minister at thetime. Yeah, so it was a
boat sushi? Is that what itwas? Was a joke that everyone ran
with. But um, yeah,so he says he's I like you too.
He goes to get another beer foreverybody. It's just it just feels
like just guys hanging out. There'snothing overly funny about his own punchlines here.
(39:07):
It's just guys hanging out. Butas a result, it's funny.
It's the vibell cat just sign BellChill last night. Yep, oh hell
I missed it. I'll tell youwhat you said partner. Now old George
come in there talking about taking hisown burbon. Cramer comes sliding and tell
you what man him doing? OldNew York boy show, Mad Nothing Broomhowe's
(39:32):
explanation of Seinfeld was so good, wasn't it That George guy and that Kremer
guy. He slips down in theroom and then then you're like, lasting
George tasting his own bird. Iwas wondering what that meant. Yeah,
I don't know what he meant bythat. Maybe cooking something, who knows.
But anyway, then we get downthe actual intro and we have to
say, this is whether you watchKing of the Hill or not, you
cannot debate that it's one of thebest themes of all time. It's a
(39:55):
terrific theme to you, isn't it. Who's the band of the Refreshments?
I believe that's what they call Yeah, yeah, but it's just even but
even the intro. Everyone knows theintro King of the Hill, whether you
watch it or not, it's justit's one of those ones that is so
memorable and it really fits the show. It really sort of shows you,
this is what this is. Who'sin the show. Like it sounds like
fifteen seconds, but you really geta feel for what the show is just
(40:15):
by that fifteen seconds. Yeah.Yeah, there's a whole bunch of life
going on. There's a whole bunchof you know, hustle and bustle actually
happening around him. But yeah, and he's just there. Yeah, yeah,
who were just like, I supposethings are going to change. I
guess it doesn't mean I have to. Yeah, and then it ends with
him, just with Peggy and Bobby, who his world, his family.
(40:35):
What you're listening to? Son,I don't think you like it? Why
not? I like this new generationof music. No, mother of god,
it's all toilet sounds. Where didyou record this? I bought it
at them all. It's a funnyphone Jrucks. Let me tell you,
Bobby, there's nothing funny about thesesounds. What that person on your tape
(41:00):
has is a medical disorder. Nowyou get ready for the game. Okay,
yes, sir, that boy right. What that person has on that
tape is a medical disorder. It'sjust not in pras at all. I
honestly cracked him, mother a gardit's all toilet Sam. Yeah. What
I was watching is I had tolike, I burst out laughing. I
(41:22):
thought it was so funny, justthese because I wantn't expect to you and
I'm just like, oh my god, I used to listen to this.
That's so good. It's such atime capsule of nineteen ninety seven. We
literally listened to guys making fat sounds. That was our pastime. But I
love how a self aware bobby isn'tI don't think you'd like this, yeah,
because I think even as a kid, you know, I mean,
there are some things that's like,I got to share this with everybody.
(41:44):
It's so great, and even whenyou're like ten or eleven, you kind
of know. I don't think everybody'sgoing to get this. I don't think
this is for This is certainly isn'tfor my mum or dad. But it's
almost as also like a tone ofI almost don't want you to listen to
this, because you might not letme listen to this if you find out
what I'm listening to. It's likethat you'd like it tells him to get
ready, that boy tells get readyfor his baseball. He walks in on
(42:06):
l Land, who's I'm getting changedin the bathroom, and she has not
the door, and he tells herit'll lock it because he's got a young
man living in the house as well. I got a minor child or something,
Yeah, a minor boy in thishouse. Now. She says he
has to stay because the parents arestill fighting. But we're now on our
way to the baseball and we havethe big debate about which percentage, how
much percentage Bobby needs to put in, how much effort? So you're ready
to kick some wildcat? But Bobby, okay, nah, don't you worry,
(42:30):
son. You just do your best. Don't listen to her, Bobby.
If you want to win, you'regonna have to do better than your
best. How do I do that? You gotta give one hundred and ten
percent. That's what it'll give youthat win and edge. But what if
the Wildcats give a hundred and tenpercent too, well, then you gotta
try even harder. How bad IfBobby gave one hundred and twelve percent,
(42:53):
sure that would work. Or maybea hundred and thirteen Yeah, yeah,
that's even better. No, Idon't know. Thirteen is a very unlucky
number. Look, we're not talkingabout thirteen. We're talking about one hundred
and thirteen and even okay, giveone hundred and twelve. What's the difference.
(43:15):
This is what it's like. SometimesElliott will ask me a question.
Right. I brought this up onour Nicola. I brought it up on
now one of our friends podcasts.I lad ut episode we reviewed, the
one with the candy hearts of Valentine'sDays. If your friend of fans out
that podcast. Yeah, But basically, sometimes Elliott will ask me a question,
and I'm like, if I answeredthis question, it's going to open
up a whole can of worms asto whys and howls and explanations. And
(43:39):
I don't have the energy. Andthe question was what a cloud's made of?
And I'm like, if I explainedto this four year old what a
cloud is made of, ah,not gonna happen. So like here the
useless conversation of maybe one hundred andthirteen, No, thirteen is an unlucky
number. It this is what happenswhen you have kids in the backs they're
(43:59):
asking that's just I loved it.I just thought this was just so true.
It's great that you know, kidsare empty buckets in that regard,
who are just you know, waitingto be filmed with knowledge and information.
Yes, yeah, but at thesame time, you don't want to be
the one who has to keep fillingup that buckets. Yeah, because once
they realize that you can get theinformation from you at the end of I
mean, it makes me. It'slike a horrible father. I do my
(44:21):
best. I Sometimes, like we'vesaid on the Finger Discount podcast, sometimes
Elliott, you know, he's fascinatedwith the sunset, or he's fascinated with
like just a tree, and I'mlike, when you're four, ship's fucking
exciting. Man, You're letting thewhole big, bad way And I'm just
like, it's just a tree.But I'm like, no, no,
no, he's four. This thing'sexciting to him. And I go,
yeah, that is cool. Likeyou got to encourage that enthusia. You've
got to nurture that. Yeah, that creativity and that curiosity. Absolutely you
(44:45):
do. Bobby's playing baseball. I'massuming Hanks to coach it seems that way
anyway, or he's just he's justa he's really getting involved. Yeah,
I must have been. How doyou get onto the field if he's not
the Yeah, yeah, I'm toosure that but but he's not the coach
because yeah, exactly. That's thepayoff at the end, isn't it.
Yeah, that's correct. I'm justlike, yeah, what's what's he doing
(45:07):
getting going out to the field andstopping the play to talk to Bobby.
I don't think you can do that. They take this board very seriously in
Texas, where you know you gottawatch Friday night lights. Yes, I
remember once playing Australian rules football.I played for a good portion of my
younger years, and I went tomy fellow over and really hurt my arm.
I broke bones my arm and Iwas in a lot of pain.
Mom just like ran out in thefield. I was like under four ends
(45:29):
or whatever. I never look atthat mums us there and that the umpire's
like, excuse me, Missy can'tbe And Mom's just like you can't stop
me from getting to my son.And I was like me, don't stand
in front of her, but don'tdo this. Just back away, then
just back away. But yeah,he's basically he says he can't you know,
you have to hit the ball ifyou want to get the first base.
Can't you just walk me? Don'tplay lawyer ball? So yeah,
(45:53):
I mean, Hank's got a veryyeah, straight up and down way of
looking at the world. No,no, no loopholes. You're going to
do this the American way. Yeah, very much like just knock it out
of the park. Yeah, thereare other ways to win baseball. No,
no, hit the balls out asyou can. He gets he hits
(46:15):
the ball. Eventually he gets thefirst base just in time. I like
to just kept waving to his mum. He was just so proud of himself,
like he wasn't paying attention. Heobviously gets hit with the ball,
but no, Hanks like, don'tlook at me, watch the game,
and he's just like, hi,mom, it's just attention at all.
And that's what it's like when you'rea kid playing the little league. You're
so your parents being there's very importantthat if you have kids out there,
you want to play a little league, if you can be there, be
(46:36):
there because oh yeah, they lookout and they look out in the you
know, the sidelines, and theysee that you're not there. When they
know that you could have made it, its heartbreak, like you've got to
got to really get involved. Andbut yeah, Bobby gets hit in the
eye with the um with the ball, and then we make a stop at
Megala Mark. That's it's I don'tknow why I found it so funny.
I got to stop you for aminute to get some w D forty and
a tap and die. I'm like, that's not a punchline, that's not
(46:58):
funny. But to me, Ilaughed at it. It's very specific.
Yeah, yeah, and now weneed to find out what it happened day
is. Yeah, you looked thatup for me. I know at w
D forty is. But this isjust pretty much like my dad though on
the way home from footy playing footylittle League footy, we gotta stop at
Bunnings. But I think we maydiscuss this on another podcast where going to
Bunnings was such a fun time.It was like a Saturday morning treat because
(47:22):
you know, here in Australia wehave the department stores called Bunnies, the
megalo Marts of Australia or Bunnings, and they have these things called sausage sizzles
out the front every Saturday morning withcharities. And when you arrive at the
Bunny's car park and get out ofthat car and you smell that Bunning snag,
is there only better smells the Davis. I don't I don't know there
is then most certainly is not thesausage sizzle. Oh man, sausage sizzle.
(47:44):
Yeah, like, it's one ofthe greatest things about living in a
show, the sausage sizzle. Andbut yeah, So the two things that
remind me of Saturday mornings and thatthe smells are the sausage sizzle at Bunnings
and going to Bunnies with my dadjust to get know some w D forty
or whatever. I'm going to goingto Bunnies coming from a drive, Yeah,
I'm coming. And then and thenthe other thing was the smell of
(48:05):
freshly mode lawn because my dad wouldalways mode lawn on a Saturday morning.
Whatever, I smell a freshly modelawn and I'm like day off from school.
Saturday morning cartoons are on good time. Time to be alive, good
time to be alive. It is, indeed, and I have taken that
opportunity to look up what a tapand die set is. Taps and dies
I used to create screw threads. So if you've unthreaded or de threaded something
(48:28):
else, then tapping is the tapprocess of cutting and forming threads, and
the diet process is called threading. So there we go. I hate this
place. I'm like, got mybrackets yet my spirit animal hate this like
so perfect just under his breath aswell, I'm not saying that, lad,
But then did you notice here theyhad Bobby just being a kid in
the background, grabbing a mailing tubeand just like swinging it like a light
(48:50):
neighbor and stuff. I'm like, that's awesome because that's what kids are like.
They can't sit still, they wantto tag along and you're like,
just fucking behave yourself. But no, he's fucking swinging this tube around and
eventually he knocked it over. Beforehe knocks the shit over though, we
have Hank having a discussion with theworker, and man, I can understand
Hank's frustration. Oh this guy wasthe worst. Yeah, but I mean
(49:12):
I'm like I said, was thatBunnings recently? And they always know their
shit. They know where fucking everythingis. Everything. It's like you have
to do like a ten weeks courseon what's in what aisle before you can
start working. Are you ask anyworker there where can I find a specific
like nail or anything? They cantell you what part of the aisle,
Like there's like a one hundred islesin the fucking building. I love Buddies
workers. They're great. They're likeGoogle, mate, they are the backbone
(49:37):
of Australia. They really are, though, and they never make you feel
bad for not understanding the basis.Like you said I need a drill,
They wouldn't. They wouldn't judge youfor not understanding a drill. Like,
no worries, mate, I meanyou hold my hand, I'll guard you.
What drill would you like? Youknow, what would you like me
to pay for it for you?Like? Just like that would have been
nice. They're always very very helpful, that Bunnings. How dear friends are
bunnies? Bunny you want to sponsorthe show, go right ahead. But
(49:58):
then, as I said the wordbecause of an idiot. But he starts
yelling at them at the work asa result for good reason, and the
women over here they start questioning andhow that boy got that black eye,
and then we get all the rumors, you know, just like purple muk
a dishwashing the Simpsons. He's takingQuirk with a hammer. Oh there's some
lady try to stop and he beatthem up too, so they call CPS.
(50:20):
You say, he hit his sonwith a bat No, that is
definitely not acceptable. I wish Icould, ma'am, but the regulations say
we can't take custody of the boywithout an interview. Don't you worry.
He's in the system now, Iam on my way. Uh, I've
just got here. What a dweeb. Twig boys, perfect twig boys,
(50:42):
just a really uh yeah, justa really good evocative way of describing this
guy. Do you think if thisshow is being made now, that Anthony
would have been a hipster? Ohlready? Hipster? Now I guess he is.
He's in nineteen ninety seven hipster.Yeah, but do you think it
would have looked the way he did? Or do what you think? You
had? A man bun? Quitepossibly? He definitely have like very tapered
(51:04):
trousers, that's what he'd have rightnow. And yeah, probably a man
bun. I can't imagine looking toodifferent in all of blood, whispy little
mustache but no beard, all thatkind of stuff. Voiced by David Herman
and played by David Herman. Thenwe get so Hanks in the system now.
Then we get Dale ranting about pollutioncontrol. And I thought the reading
here, the acting was so goodin the sense that when you know people
(51:24):
like this right when they're going offon a rant, sometimes they sort of
lose their lose their way for abit. They're going to try and get
back on track. And he's justlike, it's just like takes a big
sniff in, is it to sortof say all right now, I'm that's
right. That's where I was like, it's just the sniffer, compose your
thoughts. Yeah, yeah, thejust gathering thoughts I thought was really really
a nice little touch there. Thenhank over, here's the thumping sound.
He thinks it's from the car,and then Bobby is actually bouncing the ball
(51:46):
on the wall. And then Peecomes in and says, you know,
stop that, turn turn off theTV. She says, actually be watching
too much TV and intently his Peggyin the eye with the ball. Hank
then climbs into his car, andthis is where there's worker. Anthony arrives
at the house and hank overhears thethumping, so he walks in and sorry,
before that though, he gets thehears the sound and he's like,
(52:08):
it's that the un helicopters and he'sstill really playing up the the conspiracy theorist
here of Dale then he moves movesthe torch and bails and leaves Hank high
and right. I'm like, whatyour dorm mate? If I fell into
the car bang like that and mymate just ran away, I'd be like,
what do you do it? That'swhat friends are for, mate,
you know. But he's um theAnthony's questioning Peggy about Hankin says, nose
(52:31):
as gentle as a lamb. Meanwhile, he enters the room, grabs the
ball from Bobby, he throws andsmashes something. Hank, We have a
visitor son. You know where thisis going to be going. And I
thought a really really well put togetheropening act, considering it's the pilot.
You really like the show is setup from the get go. You had
never watched anything, but you reallyknow what the what the show's all about.
(52:52):
So then the next act I haveto get from commercial. It kicks
off with with the interview with Anthony. So you're assertion, mister Hill,
is that Bobby got the black eyeat his baseball game. That's not my
assertion, that's what happened. Haveyou ever hit your son? Mister Hell
no, what the heck are youwriting? All you gotta write is one
(53:15):
word. No, mister Hill,I feel that you're coming from an anger
mindset, and if you're projecting thisanger onto me, it gives me grave
concerns as to how you facilitate yourson's growth in private. Mister, I
have not begun to project my angeronto you, missus Hill. How did
you get this here on your forehead? Oh? This, well, Bobby
(53:35):
threw his baseball. You threw abaseball at your mother. Oh hik it
was an accident. So would thisbe the same baseball that gave Bobby the
black eye? And as you weresaying earlier, the assertion, what an
assertion, that's what happened. That'snot my assertion, that's what happened.
I am so hank in this scene. I was like, mate, you
think you know everything. You knownothing. You're not trying to learn anything.
(53:57):
It's just fuck you. Like Isaid, no shades are gray.
It's just like it happens this wayor it happens that way. Yeah,
he's just been very smarmy about it, as you were saying as well,
and just the way and it's justthe same baseball that gave Bobby the black
guy, like, oh, youlittle prick. He's already decided what the
result is going to be with this. Maybe yeah, but I think this
(54:20):
is Anthony thinking he's being a goodsocial working you know. I mean,
he's probably had to well maybe hehasn't had too, but he's heard the
horror stories about situations where he's hadto go into houses and you know,
the dad probably looked like a realstraight up and down guy, but he's
terrorizing, you know, his family, and the family can't say anything.
So I was like, I'm gonnahave to find some sort of work around
here or some sort of secret codeor them. But yeah, look,
(54:44):
I've got no time for Anthon. He's definitely a dweepy twig boy. Correct,
But yeah he's and he's the villainof this, but I can't hate
him too much. Dale has nowtries to fix hanks car. I guess
he feels bad because he bailed theHank and he accidentally cuts the brake cable.
(55:04):
Dale, I think you cut thebrake cable. No, I didn't,
and it crashes into the garage. They all bailed as well. Again.
Then Peggy mentions that she's a substituteSpanish teacher. Now do you know
what she says? Here, misterDavis, what it means in English?
So she says no, she saysloss s two Dante's son, missus migos.
I can't speak Spanish. I apologize. I think my students are my
friends. I think, yeah, something one of those lines. My students
(55:25):
are my friends. Yes, andyou just have the one son? Uh
huh. Yeah, Well we wouldhave lacked to have more kids, but
Hank has a narrow urethra peggie infair Hank sparm cab. That's enough.
What in the hell did you tellhim that for? Well, he asked
me, He asked you how manykids we have? He didn't ask you
about my GLAMs. Please, misterHill, loud is not allowed? What
(55:50):
loud is not allowed? And whatHank a good reason like that? Don't
tell him my personal ship, justleaving it that we got one son.
That's all yes, yes, oneword oh he needs one word yes,
and loud is not alloud? Blahblah. Meanwhile, Bob, we just
playing the game Boy in the background. I thought it was very nice,
touches. I did say, that'swhat I've written down, hey, game
Boy game boys? Yeah, yeah, And you know I work for a
(56:13):
living and goes on his big propanerant with the patriotic music happening in the
background and everything, and goes readat the same time and get him,
get me my BC headache powder anda glass of water. And then he
just threatens I think he threatens Anthonyin the way where it's just like you
can see why Anthony thought this guymight be a threat to his family,
So I'll give you a black eye, and it's like, that's implying that
(56:34):
you gave someone else it was ablack Then we get the social work on
Anthony talking to Art to Dale, and this is the whole This whole scene
was just to set up the factthat Dale can't tell that his wife Nancy's
having an affair with John Redcorn. How good was the reveal though, was
of Joseph. That was fantastic. That's a really just a great button on
that. Yeah yeah, yeah,Oh did Nancy just jump into that jeep
(56:55):
for twelve years? Yeah? Thenwe get Boomhower ranting had his dog in
the Social Work and Anthony just leaves. He's like, I don't want no
part of this. I don't understandwhat this guy's talking about. Then Bobby
and Joseph are throwing rocks in anexhaust. I never did that put anything
in an exhaust. It just seemslike the chance of exploding the calm.
I don't want to kill somebody,Like throwing a bock on a roof is
one thing potentially killing somebody, notfor me. Don't put the banamas in
(57:17):
the tail pat Yeah, no,no, don't do it. My denthity
ed to put potato. Yeah, potatoes needs to like blow exhaust. I'm
like, why, why, whyyou do that to somebody when you're a
kid, just don't know any better. Yeah, I guess that's what we're
going in, and that's what we'regetting this episode that you know, Bobby
takes advantage Becau doesn't really know anybetter. Um him the imperson that both
(57:37):
him and Joseph doing the impressions ofyeah, my boy, how good with
that? And he's like he's okaywith that? Yea, and yeah,
just and this, and Anthony overhearsthem impersonat him and thinking that, um
that you know he's being mean toto Bobby. Yeah, again, not
(57:57):
good at his job. He's justover hearing. Not actually, look he's
just a shooman. No, that'sI think he's got good intentions. I'm
not I'm not trying to be teamAnthony here, but I think he's got
good intentions. But he's right. He shouted his job. He doesn't do
the work. So Hank finds Lane'sunderwear on his Road and Track, which
is a magazine in America. Idid not know that. I initially thought
it was some kind of contraption.I don't know where you hung stuff,
(58:21):
but clearly not. What's what's shedoing leaving her und depends on a magazine?
Maybe she was getting changed. Shethrew it and she thought she threw
it in a pile on the flooror something. He hit them because he
would have been like a stack ofmagazine next to the toilet. And let
us imagine Hanks sitting there. He'sknickers on his magazine. So she tries
to call Luanne in and he's like, no, no, no, not
why I'm here, Why I'm here? What are you doing? What are
you doing? Mama's in jail. She was saving a quarter of beer for
(58:44):
before a bed, and Daddy threwit out and she went after him with
a fort and the trailer kept overand everything went upside down, and it's
all going to be on real storiesof the Highway patrol and we are styled
for Beauty Academy is ruined? Whatam I gonna do? Ill? Go
ahead, they're there. You canstay with us till your mama comes home,
(59:06):
and you'll style a new wig betterthan before. I'll let you use
my tools. Oh thanks, uncleHank. But that acting there from Brittany
Murphy of the wig our style forBeauty School is ruined. I thought,
man, like you feel so sorryfor her. It's not that important in
the grand scheme of things, butit's everything to her, and she really
(59:28):
conveys that Brittany movie was a terrificgag. Oh yeah, it's just the
show will not be the same therevival without having her in there. Hopefully.
I don't hope they don't try andreplace her for Lunne because it would
just I feel sorry for whoever wastrying to replace it, because they'll just
get constantly bombarded with just hate socialmedia. I think, just right around
of the show. Unfortunately, Hanksays, you know, you can stay
(59:49):
and you can use these tools totry and fix it them. Like that's
lovely, Like he's that's all heknows, him allowing her to use his
tools. I mean, it's abig deal with it to him, and
then straight away she has got togo. Then Anthony arrives to just take
Bobby away. Let's give him,Luanne, I've got one here you can
take. You can take. Bobbydoesn't And then don't you want to go
to a house with a pool?No way to go with you? And
(01:00:14):
then he's like, Bobby, Iknow you can't talk in front of him.
And then as I get what you'resaying with with Anthony, I'm just
like, how about you go anddo some more research. First ask the
literal league coach about the baseball incident, and then make your assumptions. But
the dogs while coming out and barking, yeah, now we're at the officers.
(01:00:35):
Thanks for the larte, Kenneth,Anthony, could I see you a
minute? So on this hill foundthe case, you couldn't confirm any actual
abuse, but you still recommended thestate take custody. Oh oh yeah,
I mean the whole neighborhood was rednecktcity. Did you see in the report
how he dented my geo redneck city? That's pretty funny. Where are you
from, son, Los Angeles?Hmm? Yeah, I see here hit
(01:00:59):
by baseball. So how did youlike all Harvey? Who's Harvey? Oh
he's a little league coach. Youdid talk to the little league coach,
didn't you. Bobby is now destroyingor stop signing at the front for whatever
reason, and he's taking that. He's gonna take advantage now, which is
believable but also still shitty behavior.Look, he doesn't know better like you,
(01:01:22):
you were saying. But still,Bobby, what are you doing?
Buddy? Don't take advantage of this. And then he gets the phone call
from from the guy from State SocialServices saying that the case has been dropped.
Anthony's being fired. He's been shippback to LA or five, but
shipp back to LA and Bobby thentells Peggy and Hank it was a wrong
number. So he's going to takefull advantage of this. We get back
from commercial and Hank is now cookingbreakfast. I love the humming whilst he
(01:01:43):
was cooking. When you're cooking,do sometimes just go or sing a song
to yourself whatever? I will certainlysing songs to myself. Yeah, oh
yeah, I just I just Ijust love little yeah, just humming along,
And then Lauen says she browed thetruck and she fixed it, which
is as I said earlier, andthey never used that little trait again.
Wich is a shame because you knowthere was something like a bondo. But
I thought, yeah, now Hanksin the driveway trying to fix the door
(01:02:07):
that Dale broke when he cut thebrakes of the car or the truck.
Here's the thing though, they allhad cut the brakes. So how did
Lauan drive? Yeah? Mm,so do you think about listeners? He
asked Bobby to plug the jeel inso he can fix the door, and
Bobby just being a shit here. And even if if I was Joseph in
(01:02:29):
this situation, Bobby, mate, come on, it's a bit sillier.
If I was Joseph, I'd belike, I gotta get home. Yeah,
you keep doing, you keep doingnew mate, but I'm out of
here. There's only so far youcan take that before, even if you've
been repromounded by a social work,it's like, no, forget it.
I'm dugging the al on this one. Did you do you remember moments when
you're a kid where your friend wasmisbehaving in front of their parents and you
(01:02:52):
didn't want to be guilty by associationin their eyes. You're like, just
so you know, I didn't encouragethat. Yeah, I don't condone this.
I'm a good boy. I dorecall the situation that and often I
would just you know, sort of. You try to get a little distance
from your mates and you just keepvery very quiet, and he try to
say come, and he's like,no, no, no, no,
(01:03:14):
no, I'm not getting involved byyou. It's every man for your video
pal. You just take one steptowards the parent and you stand next to
them. I think you're doing interrivingjab of parenting. The heck, don't
you see I'm working here. Closethe dang door, Bob. Just keep
(01:03:35):
foot, stop, stop hitting thatbutton. Give me that thing, Dad,
that's not respectful adult child growth dialogue. I'll give you a dialogue that's
not coming from a center of anger. Please return the garage door to its
factory pre set down position. Thatis cool. Then we get the montage
(01:03:58):
of Bobby just being a little shit, no defence and things like that,
and then mister State Services arrives himselfand he tells Peggy all about what we
don't see it, but he explainsto Peggy what's happened now, isn't a
little floor? I mean, Idon't know. It could be wrong,
could be right. But Bobby's atthe front when the State Services guy arrives
with the whole spraying hank. Right, the guy comes and it cuts to
(01:04:19):
the next scene and Bobby's just chillingin his room with no Joseph, and
Peggy's like, the man just can'ttell me what really happened, And Bobby's
like, don't tell dad. I'mlike, wasn't he just at the front
with the whole squaton hank. Iget where you're coming from. Certainly worth
picking, but let's ignore it.It doesn't matter. But as we're saying,
Peggy enters his bedroom and does thesound effects like that police academy guy
(01:04:43):
cree. Now, kids would haveno fucking idea. What the kids do
not know who Michael Winslow is.So as we said, here, Bobby,
he's being confronted. You know youlied, you know the guy said
caught and said that, um,yeah, that the case has been dropped
wide. You do it. He'slike, I like him better. This
way, I can make him loveme even when I screw up. And
I'm like, oh man, you'rebeing a ship head. But you know
(01:05:04):
he coming from you can you canunderstand where he's coming from because you know
he's this is the thing, aswe were saying at the start, we
can really put ourselves in Bobby's shoes, can't we? Because our dad's never
told us that they loved us.I've never I'm thirty four, and my
dad has never said the words Ilove you to me ever, never once
said the words I know he lovesme, but he's never said right.
(01:05:24):
So it's very much like this lastscene here. I'm just like, I've
never even had really a moment likethis with my dad where my dad was
just like, you know, Ilove you, Like he's never actually said
that, but I just thought whereBobby's coming from here, I'm like,
I get that, and it hasI've never really watched a show where my
relationship with my dad. I cansee elements of it in Barton Homer and
other things, but this is theclosest I've ever come to watching a show
(01:05:44):
where I'm like, ah, thatis how I felt when I was a
kid, and still kind of feelto this day. It's like does he
not does he love me? Butit's like, am I doing Was there
a reason he didn't want to tellme. But it's like, there's no
reason. It's just as you're saying, it's just a generation, isn't It
was just a generation? It reallyis. Yeah, yeah, didn't do
anything wrong, but anyway, butthis is where Peggy says, you know,
you've got to go and tell himthat you love him. He's like,
I don't want to tell him.You know, I don't want to
do this. You know, it'sit's just not who I am. And
(01:06:08):
guess the vision of his of hisdad Cotton, the shid's getting blown off
in things and don't come to mewith yeah, with what's your problems?
Or whatever it was. And andthen he gets sent out and I talked
to Bobby. He's out in theporch, and I like the mumble under
his breath, don't twig bike comesover here? Now you're gonna tell him?
So he goes to see Bobby.Ah, you you're my son.
(01:06:31):
Well you know with everything that entails, uh, you know, feelings of
fondness and more. You know whatI mean, don't you? Boy?
No Ah? Well, uh oh, that's a hell of a weird sound.
(01:06:57):
I've never made that before. Iyou. Uh, family, You're
not making this easy on me.Boy, Okay, I love you no
matter what you do there, Hugh, let's go get something deep. I'm
not just a big disappointment to you. Disappointment. No, you make me
(01:07:23):
proud. I've been disappointed by justabout everything else in this town, but
you not once. Damn it.You're my boy. You know better than
that. I just thought that wasa really well acted scene from my judge.
That the weird sound and just thepacing through the love you no matter
what you do there you go.Now, let's go get something eat,
(01:07:44):
like just rushing through it like it'sit felt so believable. He certainly well,
I mean co created the shower, but yeah, I mean he thinks
he's very much in sync with thischaracter. I think he very much knows
where this person's coming from and wherethey're at. So yeah, it's it's
it's terrific, terrific acting, hewrote by Mike Judge and seeing the big
smile on Bobby's face when he realizes, oh no, what a minute,
he does love me and just theyou're my boy, and I'm that's awesome,
(01:08:08):
just like that's what you want tohear. Just I'm just like,
yeah, this is lovely. Andthen, as we'll say, and as
he would have heard Anthony season fromthe bus, he's punched him. He's
punching him. I see, Itold you. He's like what twig boy?
And then he's off to LA's theend of Anthony for season one.
He returns in season two. Butman, what a great pilot episode.
And that's the end of the pilot. Yeah, and a terrific one.
You're right, I mean it really. It sets up the place, it
(01:08:30):
sets up the tone, it setsup the characters. You're already you feel
very familiar with everything by the endof twenty something minutes. That's terrific storytelling.
Bills, bills, bills? Whydo we keep getting bills? Mail?
All right? So we've got somemail bag sent through to us this
past week. King of the HillMailbag at gmail dot com. If you
(01:08:54):
do anything in this next fortnight, make sure you send us a message,
whether it be a question or justa nice message. We'd love to hear
from each and every one of you. Doesn't have to be a long one,
just a short one. Just loveto hear from We just want to
hear from you, guys. Kingof the hillmailback at gmail dot com.
This one comes from Justin Williams, and Justin says, hey, Dan down
guy. Sorry in advance if thisbecomes a long email. I've been listening
to four Finger Discounts since I believetwenty eighteen, started from the very first
(01:09:17):
episode. I'm a huge fan ofwhat you guys do, and I actually
started a King of the Hill podcastback in twenty nineteen, taking inspiration for
what you guys did with four FingerDiscount. It was called the Dang It
Bobby Podcast. Sadly we didn't getpast season one two to scheduling issues with
my co host and COVID. Damnyou COVID. Anyway, I'm glad this
is getting recognized by the podcast empirethat is Fourth Finger Discount. I would
(01:09:38):
highly recommend, if possible, willyou try and get a hold of the
DVDs of the seasons of King ofthe Hill because they have the audio commentaries
and they're very informative, and forsome of the episodes the commentary is done
by characters from the show. Soundsinterest, doesn't it. This is the
thing, as we say, physicalmedia. I think people are starting to
realize, hey, that physical mediaso bad after all, I think so
(01:09:58):
absolutely want to get like the seasonbox sets of the Simpsons, like the
later ones were like, you know, eighty bucks each down and it's like
this, like ten bucks. Atone point you couldn't you couldn't give them
away. Now everyone's like wait, wait a minute, wait a minute,
audio commentaries for all the extras,or the way it looks on the shelf.
(01:10:18):
There's something. There's something about seeinga shelf with DVD's all tidy,
isn't It's like that if it's allespecially I have mine alphabetical order, and
I'm very funny about I like tobe alphabetical order. And the kids.
Once I had kids, a sortof got mixed around a bit and I
sort of relaxed a bit. Butseeing it all neat and tidy in alphabetical
order, all the DVD box sets, because sometimes get the box sets and
(01:10:40):
they create like a picture on thespine and things like that, I love
it. Oh no, same hereabsolutely. I mean, you know where
everything is. You don't have toworry that it's been you know, moved
from one string service for another,or just completely yanked off the off the
airwaves. It's it's yours. Forever. Yeah, the question from just is
(01:11:00):
what show would you watch for thevery first time again? I guess he's
trying to say, which show wouldwe like to be able to watch for
the very first time again? Iguess that's the way we're taken anyway,
Which show that we've seen would welike to be able to watch for the
very first time not knowing what comesnext, what happens in it. M
I'm going to say maybe Breaking Bad. Oh, that's a good one.
Honestly, I'm probably gonna say MiamiVice. Okay, I've never watched Miami
(01:11:24):
Vice. Yeah, it's it's interestingbecause it's very eighties, but at the
same time, it's also kind ofcutting edge, you know. I mean
it was so different to a lotof TV that was out of the time.
Yeah, that you feel like you'rewatching something completely new but also something
completely old. So yeah, that'sthe thing. I think I'd like to
(01:11:44):
go back from the very and probablysure. I think I've got a couple
of seasons here on DVD somewhere.Nickla has any scene about three or four
episodes of The Simpsons in her life? Oh my god? What just and
usually with you, I'm still apodcast with her like this is the thing
now that how to do a podcastabout the Simpson I've very rarely watched it
in my downtime, which is thedownfall of doing a podcast. But the
Simpsons, because it's just like itis, not that it feels like a
(01:12:06):
job, but I feel like nowI should watch Simpsons all the time.
It's my favorite show of all time, but I just find myself not watching
it as much. But thank youfor the question. Justin let's delve into
the mail back again. Someone comesfrom Shaan Winkler. Sewan says, hello,
gentlemen, I'm a big fan.My name is Shawan Winkler. Hello
Shawn. I live in New Yorkand I started following your four finger discount
Facebook page many years ago. Simpsonsis the show that raised me. I'm
(01:12:27):
about to be forty years old,and I feel like we all grew up
in the same era on different sidesof the world, like you. When
I was a kid, I neverwas pulled into King of the Hill whilst
it was on the air. OnceI purchased Hulu as an adult, I
saw I always hear about this.Hulu sounds like like the Holy Grail,
and I saw the Hill, andjust like you did with Disney, Plus,
I hopped into the show and fellin love. Hank Hill is my
hero and Bobby Hill was me asa child, which is very much me
(01:12:49):
as well. I think I feellike you know, Bobby, That's how
that's why the show is so relatablenow, because it's like that's why I
was when I was a kid,and Hank it's who I as an adult.
Yeah, and I've never related morewith a show in my entire life.
Once at a party, I madea joke that I've I've got big
feet like Peggy Hill, which youfind out in a few episodes, that
she's got really huge size feet, and one guy started cracking up, and
