What you're listening to, son,how did you like it? Welcome to
Speaking in the Hill in Australian Kingof a Hill podcast, where this week
we're not going to be doing anepisode review at all. We have gone
through the entire season one. Thisweek, what we're going to be doing
is running through our top ten episodesof King of the Hills season one and
I'm very excited to be doing so. Thanks for listening. I'm and I'm

(00:20):
guy. Thank you very much forlistening, and yeah, enjoy the show.
Dando Titney Bay surprise with all thatguys back. Guys, just landed
back in Australia, Folks. He'sbeen in America for the last three and
a half weeks, two and ahalf weeks. Two and nice, but
it felt like three and a halfweeks because I was in sunny California,

(00:41):
where as our pal Jim Cummings wouldsay, another day in Paradise, That's
exactly what it felt like. That'sgreat. The lovely Luis and I,
Yeah, spent a bit of timein the idyllic little town of Fairfax,
California, just part of Marin County, home of George Lucas. We passed
his house. Apparently Jimmy said hesaw you on the street, but he

(01:02):
didn't bother stop him. I sawhim, and you know, I sort
of gave him the finger to hisback. That's how we roll. We're
birds now. No, just thatwe had a wonderful, wonderful time.
I don't know, I don't knowhow she's going to feel about me telling
the story. Everything was great untilwe made our way back to Australia.

(01:23):
Um, I'm pulling the toilet scenario. This is the toilet scenario. Yes,
indeed, that's also the subtitle ofthe next Mission Impossible move. You've
had dead reckoning, now you've gotthe Mission impossible toilet scenario. This is
what I'm actually called Louise's unmentionable problem. It probably isn't mendable, lad,
I'm actually be talking about it.The fact of it is we are after

(01:44):
a fifteen hours in the air,we landed back in Australia. It was
like, I'm just gonna get freshenup, and you know, tied him
herself up and she went to don'tdo this at home, kids, But
she went to the disabled toy becausethere was a little more room to move,
and you know, she was goingto be in and out very very
quickly exceed and a Calma's ear startedto prick. This looks like an able

(02:05):
buddy person. And the sliding door, the button that you used to open
the sliding door was not working. She was trapped inside this. Uh it
was disabled. Indeed, could saythat if you're a very smart, quick
witted person like one bringing Dando, well played buddy. But I mean,

(02:28):
I was sitting outside and I heardthis knocknock, knock, knock, and
I'm like, he's going on.Why is all that knocking coming from?
Who's knocking in the in the bathroom, if you know what I'm talking about.
I go in to see what's goingon, just to go down the
hallway, and yeah, losing theother side of this. I can't get
out, and I'm grabbing anyone thatlooks even vaguely official, which is probably
some poor cleaner making minimum weight.Take. My girlfriend's locked in there.

(02:50):
How do we get her out?I don't know. In the end,
we finally got a couple of veryable bodied gentleman who had a very full
stocked coolbox. They broke out thecrowbars. They're on their way to break
the still a tiller macas but yougot them on the way. They were
there to get all the duty freethey could get. But after well between

(03:14):
an hour and between no, halfan hour and forty five minutes of you
know, sort of various bang alsotrying to get various people like I was
starting to become I've never heard myself. I've never heard my old man more
in my voice than I haven't,Like, is there anyone around here who
can open this bloody door? Inthe end, crow bar bars, guys,

(03:37):
finally got it open. Who lastthing you need after fifteen hours in
confined space is forty five minutes andan even more confined space lest she had
a bathroom to go to she neededit, Well, that's true. It's
not being stuck in an elevator havingto shit in the corner somewhere. Yeah,
I'm not saying I've done that. All the while there was this huge

(04:00):
people in wheel chair saying we wantthe toilet, we want the toilet.
But anyway, but as she comesout walking, shame for shame, having
said that wonderful trip five out offive no notes would recommend great. I'm

(04:20):
glad you had a good time.I'm sure we'll talking about more on our
four figure discount podcast. But yeah, I'm glad you are. We're finally
back here now. Basically, letyou guys know up front, so I'm
heading to England next week. Sowe made the clever decision of backing up
our holidays back to back, whichmeans it's it's been really hard to try
and get all the episodes in thecan in the lead up, like one

(04:41):
episode behind. Basically, once youlisten to this, there's gonna be no
episodes until the end of August,so you're gonna have like three and a
half fish weeks off. I thinkit is about three to four weeks off.
No King of the Hill podcast. But once I get back i Land,
I believe it's a twenty third ortwenty fourth of August, we'll record
an episode the following day and we'llget a straight up in your ears.
So no King of the Hill podcastus no season two of Speaking of the
Hill until the end of August.Because on the last episode, which was

(05:04):
Plastic White Female, we asked forpeople to write in, you know,
if you enjoy the show and youwants to continue the show, let us
know. King of the Hillmailbag atgmail dot com and we've had plenty of
people writing in. We'd love tohear from you guys as well. Continue
If you haven't sent in a message, send it in. We'd love to
hear from you guys and what youlove about the show. King of the
Hillmailbag at gmail dot com. Butwe've had enough of a response where I'm
going, okay, we shall continueSpeaking of the Hill. We're back,

(05:26):
baby, Yes, we are indeed, all right. So yeah, the
end of August, so no episodefor like a month or so. I'll
be in England where Nicholas family finallyget to meet my daughter Holly. It's
because she was born during COVID andjust things have not lined up. But
yes, you're very excited go toEngland. I thought, whilst I'm in
England, I'd like to just relax. So there no podcast for a month,
but we'll be back at the endof August. Also, once we
get back in September, Talking Siinfoldshall be returning as well, So if

(05:48):
you've been wondering where's Talking Sinfold,it shall be returning in your ears once
I get back from England and weget back to normality. Indeed, but
if you're a fan of the voicesof Dan lu and myself. Um,
there should be episodes past and presentto just you know, keep you occupied.
I think in the in the interimthat's correct percent. Yeah, if

(06:12):
you haven't checked out all our othershows talking so fould. If you've got
a Future Rummer podcast Future Rummers ComingBack, I think it might have already
debuted by the time this goes toair back on the air in America and
hopefully on Disney. Plus you're inthe show. Not too sure about that,
but if you're fan future Um,you can check out Towers the Future
Um on our Patreon channel. Butthere's movie reviews up there as well.
Plus we also have our South Parkpodcast. We've got there, the Sinfowl
podcast, I've got My Friends podcastof Nick Love guys been reviewing The Simpsons

(06:35):
with me in season eleven, Soyou've got eleven, twelve, thirty and
fourty and fifty and sixteen, likesix seasons of The Simpsons were listen to.
So there's plenty of hours of goingdown to get you through the month
of August. And if you're abit of a widow, there's even some
Mitch in there. There is indeedmostly talking about the cricket, but we're

(06:57):
not talking about that right now.Right now, we're talking about King of
the Hill. Yeah, and ourtop five, our top ten favorite episodes,
top five each. Basically, we'regonna make this little game. I'm
going to try and guess, guys, top five and no particular order.
He's then going to do the same, and then we're going to run through
from five through to one what ourfavorite episodes were of season one, And
we'd love to hear what your fivefavorite episodes of season one of King of
the Hill were as well, Soright in, King of the Hill Mailbag

(07:19):
at gmail dot com, please doright in. We would love to hear
from you. All right, guys, so you tell me what and the
listeners, what do you think weremy five favorite episodes of season one of
King of the Hill? And wereyou going to complicate this by me wanting
to put them in order or noparticular order? Okay, great, I'm
going to start at the very topthing of the list of episodes that we

(07:39):
went through. I'm gonna be straightfaced this entire time, so you can't
tell I'm not even looking at you. Yeah good, I'm looking on another
screen right now for two reasons. One so you don't you know, bewitch
me with your poker face, andtwo so I can actually look at the
list okay things episodes and I think, damn don't like I'm gonna say that

(08:01):
you liked the Order of the StraightArrow. I'm gonna say you liked Hanks
unmentionable problem. I'm gonna say youlike Shins of the Father, Peggy,
the Boggled Champ, and the Pilot. Okay, alrighty, well, my
five in a particular order that Ithink are your five favorites are going to
be Hanks, Got the Willies, keeping up with our Joneses, Shins of

(08:24):
the Father, Westyside story, andas you said, for me, Hanks
unmentionable problem. Now, we mayhave some overlap here, so it might
not technically be a top ten ifwe have overlaps, but that is what
I think you're gonna be, guys, top five, So drum roll,
what do you think? Sorry? What was your number five on the top
five? Guy? Davis? Kingof the episodes for season one? You're

(08:46):
gonna look at me like I'm aweirdo here, because I don't know if
we were all that big on itwhen we talked about it, but my
number five is Plastic White Female.Okay. Yeah, I had that in
the five and then took it outand I thought, I don't know,
I'm like, he liked it andit was relatable, but I didn't know
whether you liked it that much.Okay. So so and it says that
not the guy kisses mannequins, butjust you know, going through that period

(09:07):
of your life when you're into yourteens and you're discovering girls, and you
know, we often have young guyon the podcast making it appear right.
Yes, what was it about PlassicWhite Female that you enjoyed? Pretty much?
What you mentioned? I mean,I think I think it was a
really um it was very evocative whenit came to that time of discovery slash

(09:28):
confusion, and those two are sortof inexorably bound together. Yeah. I
thought I did a really great jobof, Yeah, just depicting the joy
and the fear of that period inthe young person's life when it's like,
Wow, I'm feeling all these feelingsand am a little scared by them at
the same time. I wanted toexplore them and confusion as well. Absolutely

(09:50):
absolutely, And I think one thingthat we have both enjoyed about King of
the Hills. Simply started talking aboutthe show, and as we've gone through
the first season, as we dughow realistic it was, that sort of
true to life. It was tothe point where it seemed like, well,
not a lot's happening in this show, and then you realize, no,

(10:11):
actually, life is happening in thisshow, and that's that's plenty,
you know, even if it's notsort of boom over the top or whatever,
it's just sort of it's a verylow key kind of show, but
enjoyable in that way. Now.I don't know if the creators of the
show decided to let their freak flagfly as the season went along, if
they got notes from the network it'slike, hey, let's spice this up
a little bit or whatever. Butcertainly the last few episodes how to Touch

(10:33):
are the weird to them. Imean, I think that is definitely evident
ant Hill, Yeah, very much, and almost to a point where I
don't think either of us were Idon't think we disliked it, but we're
kind of like, what's going onhere? And I didn't just like the
episode. I light the whole dale. Hank sorry, I didn't like just

(10:54):
the Bobby side. B play wasweird. Yes, so same here,
same here, And there are elementsof play White Female that are kind of
the same, but they're a littlebit more relatable. And I don't mind
the odd touch of oddness, shallwe say, And I think this episode
did that pretty well. So ithad a really strong, sturdy foundation in
terms of what it's covering, whatit's talking about, and occasionally got a

(11:18):
little odd with it, which Idoubt. So. Yeah, plastic White
Female was my number five. Ialso liked in that episode how you Know
Bobby, as we all do inthat period in our lives and even to
this day, we ever think things, you know, even like when you're
a teenager, I was like twentyone mot Nicola. Nothing met Nikola has
been a lot easier, but likenow when you're sort of trying to find
the one and you're trying to besomeone you're not in all the confusion.

(11:41):
Where for Bobby though, I justlike the whole idea of you know,
Connie is just there the whole time, she's the one for him, but
he just can't see it. Yeah, it's like we over complicate all these
things it's like the one year you'vebeen looking forth right there you're just not
looking right. You're looking in allthe wrong places, which is what we
all do. You know, absolutelyabsolutely, and you know those other funny
aspects to it as all this episodeand also hard warming aspects, I mean,

(12:01):
the relationship between Hank and Luan andeven the stuff with with with Peg.
You know, I think this isthis may be the like a turning
point and inflection point episode where youstart to see because you know, something
we've talked about is how no oneseems to like Peg later on and this
episode you're hearing a sort of dothe very florid Spanish or Mexican pronunciation of

(12:26):
certain words, and they're kind ofstuff. It's like, this might be
the this might be where it startsto happen. But I found that kind
of entertaining and kind of funny. But yeah, a lot of a lot
of a lot to enjoy in thisepisode. Speaking of the Hill is brought

(13:13):
My number five is one that youmentioned, so I've got this one correct.
It is Peggy the Boggle Champ.I've just got here in my notes
that I love a good sporting episodeof a sitcom, a good sporting tale,
a true underdog story, and that'swhat Peggy is here. And I
just thought pairing her up against theevil villain of Cissy Cob played by Laurie
Metcalf, who played that role sowell. But I just love the fact

(13:37):
that they made this awesome like underdogstory, like a sporting event out of
Boggle, and it's just sort ofepidimizes King of the Hill, as you
were just saying before, like everythingseems sort of bland and sort of playing,
but that's the that's the charmer Kingof the Hill. So the fact
that there's a sporting esque episode butit's not about football. It's not about
you know, hockey or baseball,it's about boggle. I just thought that

(13:58):
was just it was King of theHill is so perfect. And I also
liked the side story of gradually hearrives a little too late. He sort
of leaves Peggy alone for a while. Then she's panicking, she's stressing out,
and he arrives at the end ofit at the nice moment. But
I liked that he put the boysaside for his wife, and we get
a lot of those moments throughout theseason. But I thought it was sort
of was handed very well in this. But yeah, just the sporting episode
of the season, Peggy the BoggleChamp, I thought was very entertaining.

(14:20):
I loved as well with the notthe Hank side plot. But I guess
Hank's story in this about it.You know, he holds his masculinity.
Yeah, we hold his football careersuch as yes, very close to his
heart. It's very central to hispersonality. And you'll learn that it's not
really this great saga that he imaginedit to be. It's just, you

(14:43):
know, he played footy in highschool. That's pretty much it. Yeaggy
is like you didn't win. Yeah, but Howard how Peggy's you know,
boggle. I won't say obsession, but competitiveness and all that kind of stuff
dovetails with that, and how everybody'sgot their competitive something. I mean,

(15:03):
everybody likes to have something that they'regood at and something they can be proud
of, particularly when it puts youin competition with other people and you have
the chance to show that you wantthat you're better than other people. I
really enjoyed that aspect of it,and I guess the b plot of it
as well, with with Luanne andBobby at home of course, yes,
yeah, and of the house, well at that great little baits which where

(15:26):
you think it's gonna be risky business, but it's not, even though they
are playing all those little tributes ofrisky business all the way through which I's
doing the laundry. But also,I mean, you know, tales of
youngsters running wild while the while theoldies are out of town are just you
know, as old as time immemorial. The fact that they were getting so

(15:50):
uptight about even the slightest little thingslike oh my god, you know,
uh, you know, condensation ringon the table or staying on the carpet
or whatever, and everyone just getsthey're all getting so worked up. Found
that very very funny. Indeed, yea, and I would love that scene
that shot sorry of them arriving.I think it was in Dallas, right,
and Hank once the windows up,All right, then it's now it's

(16:15):
number four. Hit me with yournumber four. You indeed did mention.
I believe it is Hank's got theWillies. I thought, Yeah, Willie
Nelson fan, you and really havea lot in common. I have no
idea what you're doing. It's thebeard, even though you both flaked off.
Very correct. Look, it's scicaravan and our long running country music.

(16:41):
Willy has long hair, You've gotlong grass. Also, we like
both like smoking wheat woo. It'sa scientific fact that anything you will include
Willie Nelson and something, it automaticallybecomes six better, such as the case
king the Hills, such as thecase with Hanks. What the Willies?

(17:02):
It was the only real guests spiteepisode, wasn't it where the guests played
themselves right? Pretty much? Yeah, because this is the one where Dennis
Hopper pops into rocks up as well. Yeah, and you get there one
of the people playing, Um,it might be my judge being Bob Dylan.
That's right, yeah, yeah,And I mean I'm not downplaying the
quality of the episode. I thinkthere are certainly better episodes throughout this first

(17:25):
season than Hanks Got the Willies.I mean, but it's got such a
it's got the great King of theHill foundation of a solid story, a
solid message. I mean, it'sit doesn't bang you over the head of
the same We're trying to teach yousomething here, viewers, but you invariably
come away with, like, Irecognize that about myself, or you know,

(17:45):
maybe I should be better in thatway, or oh maybe I do
that, maybe I should stop thatkind of thing. This is the one
where Bobby was where Bobby thought he'dembarrassed hank and ruined his golf. Is
that right? He's one chance tomeet Willie Nelson and Bobby ruined it?
Is that the one? Yeah?Yeah, yeah? And the one about
role models and heroes as well, that's right, yeah, yeah yeah.

(18:07):
And in the end, I thinkPeggy says that you know, you realize
that boy, that your Bobby's hero. I think Hankton quite realized that he's
like, well, mom's dad he'sgot his own daddy issues. Of course,
I thought all that was just wonderful. He's also put in the guitar
ahead of Peggy as well. Rememberthat's right, of course, the guitar.
Yeah, yeah, he plays thePeggy song at the end, he
does yea yeah. I mean, look, I primarily remember this because of

(18:30):
Willie Nelson, who, as Isaid, just you know, it adds
a little something special to pretty mucheverything that he touches. He blended so
well into the King of the Hilluniverse where you would just assuming if you
didn't know anything about Willie Nelson, you just buy him. It is just
a character on King of the Hill. You would think so yeah, because
I mean he's the kind of personalityhe's very in sync with King of the

(18:51):
Hill. Because Willie Nelson is notnecessarily large in life. He's not standing
at the song Hey you look atme, and Willie Nelson is more like
everybody, and Willie Nelson's like andyou're kind of drawn to him as a
result, just like you're drawn theKing of the Hill. King of the
Hill is not there saying well lookat me early here. It's more like,
go on in, we've got somefun stuff with you, and they
spent a bit of time. Whenit's company, It's like, Wow,
this is great. There's got everythingI need. So yeah, that's why

(19:12):
I liked Hank's good the Willies.Yes, very good episode. Indeed,
my number four was a westy Sidestory. The way they handled it there,
it was this in your top episodes, this is this is my number
two. So if we've got crossoverhere, I think we should. We're
crossing at the same time, yea. So basically what I liked was the

(19:32):
fact that no, they tackled thetheme of just casual racism so perfectly in
this episode where Hank and that andCo. We're saying racist things, but
they weren't being racist. So theyhandled the topic of if you say something
racist but you don't realize it's racist, does that make you a racist?
And I think that there's a linehere, there's something on the lines where

(19:53):
he says, I don't hate thecolor of his skin, I just don't
like the man. And I thinkthat's that's a topic that's even more relatable
now than it was in nineteen ninetyseven. It's so often now someone will
put a tweet out and it getsmisconstrued and people jump on it. They
want people to get canceled as aresult. And it's like, I know
what you're saying, they didn't meanit that way, and I think you

(20:14):
know as well, they didn't meanit in the way it's been read and
the way it's been written. Givethem a second chance, like it was
so quick to cancel in twenty twentythree. And I think that this episode
here, maybe of all the episodesin this first season, was the most
relatable in the sense of just socialmedia. What's the term the cancel culture?
Because he could say, yeah, but I just love the way that

(20:36):
you know, we see the openside, the open minded side of Hank
here where he's just like you know, as I was saying, he doesn't
hate him for being Asian. Hehates him because of the way he is
and and he is a prick. It's justified, absolutely, so what he's
saying, I can't hate a guyfor being a dick because he's Asian,
like you know what I mean,And it's just such it's that's more relatable

(20:57):
now than it wasn't ninety seven.Us love the way they handed It's like
the guy who everyone should hate becausehe's an arshole. They're not supposed to
because they're going to be called aracist. I just thought they handed it
so well in this episode. Itcould have been a real after school special
kind of thing, where you know, Karn and his family are just these
saintly new new arrivals to the neighborhoods, like, oh, you know,

(21:18):
we don't want to bother anybody,We just want to feel. It's like,
no, he's a dick. He'simmediately dissing his namehas dissing their lifestyle.
Yeah, big upping himself and hisfamily and how great they are so
good, And he had sledging everybody. I mean, what did he say
about I think he's more pay No, you're your lady birch, you're real

(21:41):
slut. This episode, is it? Yeah? And I'm sorry forgotten I
forgot Karn's wife's name, min minso the recipes as well, well,
the recipes and tis he's doing thesubtle sledging. Then carns of the sledge
and she's the scalboard. Just yourrecipe is lacking one thing flavor. She's

(22:06):
like the poison. She's like thedrug in the drink. You don't know's
there it's just gets hi when youat least expect it. But yeah,
it's just so good. I lovethat the barbecue seene in particular where they're
all just like, no American styleand he's like, no, no,
you cook it up my way,and they're standing, they're trying to tell
them you get to burn them. He's like, let me cook it the
way I want to cook it,and they realize, Fuck, this guy
cooks a good burger. You know. It's just at the end we get

(22:29):
the scene where they realize they're notso different, you know, they in
regards to how they parent that theirkids, and and I just thought,
yeah, just the way they handledeverything in this episode, that just the
racism is just one of the bestexamples of a sitcom handling that topic,
I reckon I've ever seen. Ithink so as well. And on top
of that, yeah, it taughtyou a little something about race relations and

(22:49):
it also taught you a little somethingabout cooking because you just add an upmeg
to everything exactly right. So thatwas your number two, That was mine
number four. So number three,My number three is square peak square peg.
I have that at my number two. Such a good such a good
episode. And considering it's only thesecond episode ever man Man, Yeah,

(23:11):
so yeah, I mean this episodeis well just with is Peggy has been
chosen to teach the school education class. Both she and Hank when it comes
to sex, are like, we'drather not talk about it at all in
general, really, isn't it?Alan? And general? Yeah, it
is generally a very conservative once theyrepressed, let let's go with conservative kind

(23:33):
of community. It's like, thesethings can be talked about, but usually
behind closed doors and usually incorrectly. So we also have the argument of that's
something we should be talking about,we should be teaching the kids, and
it's like, but we don't wantto do it either. That isn't that
fantastic? Yeah, I mean it'sit's such a truism. That's like,
yeah, I'm going to take chargeof this and I've got no idea or

(23:56):
even the inclination yeah how to doso. So yeah, that's a that's
really marvelous and just a very funnyepisode and a very just a good character
driven episode as well, and youget an idea of how Hank and Peg
relate to one another, they relateto this son Lune as well. I
mean, it makes A has aterrific appearance in this as well. I

(24:21):
feel it's like a real female empowermentepisode, don't you reckon? It was
without bashing and were over the headwith it. Yeah, exactly, because
I've got here in my notes. It's a great focus on Peggy and Hank's
relationship, both as a husband andwife and as parents. So attack the
touch of the parents, but hesees because because everyone in Ireland is so
as you're saying, like close mindedearlier when it comes to the sex head
right, so they're almost like embarrassingtalking about piggo. Can you believe he's

(24:45):
doing? He can't you believe it? And Hanks somewhat embarrassed by that.
And then by the end, Ithink Bobby goes to work with him one
day because Bobby can't do the classeither or something, and he makes Hank
realize, oh shit, she's actuallya stronger woman than anyone else in Ireland,
and he goes and he takes Bobbythere, and in the end Bobby's
the only one that gets taught anyway. So in the end, it all
it's all full circle. It's likeshe could have taught him at home anyway.

(25:07):
But I just thought, yeah, the focus there. It was the
first time I think we see Hankbe a really good husband. He's a
really good dad in the first episode, but this is where it's like,
oh, Hank's actually a great husbandas well. Yeah, even if he's
not going to sort of, asI said about this show, you know,
it doesn't go around blowing its ownhorn too much. It's not gonna,
you know, give you a veryspecial episode lesson about this is how

(25:29):
you be a good husband. It'slike, no, he's just he has
faith and belief and love in hiswife, and yeah, that'll get you
through a lot. And plus youknow, it's it's funny in a lot
of ways. I mean, thishas just got that great line from Bobby
when you know they're all the talkof sexes in the air, and I
think he said something about I'm justa little worried about being a slut.

(25:51):
I'm sorry, I'm saying slut alot this episode. Bad. I think
this show deploys that word really well, probably better than the wrestling rock promos.
What was I going to say?But yeah, there's also that great
scene of Peggy China say I wasa vagina, I was a penis.
I think it was vagina, wasn'tit, because at least alone, like

(26:11):
he's only don't be seeing that infront of the boy. He's only been
out of yours for eleven years.I may be misremembering, but I thought
that was a great line. It'salso that terrific flashback where you got you
get to understand a bit of badHank just by virtue of seeing how his
dad his dad talking about sex. That's right, Yes, that was it
rodeo or was it the cows?I think it was just at the farm.

(26:33):
They went to the ranch or whatever. He just watches a couple of
cut some some cattle getting it on. What are you crying for? A
boy? There's a good show comein theme throughout this season was Hank going
well, I tasted boy the wayI was taught. Then he has a
flashback and he's like, oh shit, I wasn't taught the right way.
In a minute, I was taughtall the wrong kind of stuff from scratch.
But again, as you're touching onwith the with plastic white female,

(26:56):
also just very relatable. We've allhad that sex ed class of all had
that discussion and whether it's with yourparents where you're a teacher at school.
It is an awkward time in yourlife and it's a party life where you
want to know everything, but youdon't know who to ask or where or
what to ask? Do you no? No what I mean the source you
get it from me. The lastthing you want is your parents telling you

(27:18):
about this. Yeah, you know, even though clearly they know what they're
talking abot, because you know you'rethere, that's how it happened. You
know, you don't look go outto your mum and say, so where
do I put it? Mum?Like it's like you should be how many
times do I have to put itin? Yeah? Yeah, but you
should be able to have those conversations, but you just we just don't.
And still evan to this day,it's still just one of those not taboo,

(27:41):
but it's just maybe it's a littlebit more lenient now. But I
don't know, I especially remember whenI was like a teenager. I'm like,
I just cannot never ask my mumanything, even though I probably could
have, I just I just didn't. Likewise, Yeah, it's just it's
just awkward and uncomfortable. Yeah, definitely, everyone probably has the best intentions,
but you just feel a bit squeaky, all right, So that was

(28:04):
your number three, correct, yourscrap pet, that is correct. My
number three is keeping up with ourjoneses. I really enjoyed seeing Hank and
Peggy rekindle that spice in their relationship, in their marriage, that's right.
Whether you know, it's through smokingsecret. So it's not a good not
a not a good thing. ButI just love the way seeing them sort

(28:26):
of go back to their younger years. And it made me sort of realize,
I wonder whether my parents, youknow, ever had that moment of
I mean, surely at some pointyou haven't. You have a sort of
a vision, like as a marriedcouple, I've got a few kids,
what would be if we never hadthem? That's not that's know you want,
but you just have that sort ofwell, what if you know?
We originally did Tales of Interest onthe Anthology of Interest, on Future arm

(28:48):
on Tows of Future Arma. Itis like the watchiff machine. What if
we never had kids? Where wouldwe be right now? How much extra
money would we have? You know, would we be going out and laying
out on the football field and justhaving fun in the middle of the night.
You know what I mean being crazy, and I just love seeing Hank
trying to teach Bobby a lesson. As a result, he sort of like
triggers something in his brain where he'slike, wait a minute, all these
good memories are coming back. Andjust seeing Hank Hill, of all people,

(29:11):
teaching Bobby how to smoke a cigaretteand really enjoying it. I thought
it was such a great scene. It's true because I think for this was
the tenth episode of the season.Yeah, you learn more and more about
Hank as the episode goes as theseason goes along, but even by this
stage you realize, oh, thisguy's fairly straight up and down, quite

(29:33):
conservative. You can't imagine him everhaving sort of cut loose or anything like
that. And even when you're seeinghim in his younger years here, I
mean, he's not exactly, youknow, a wild and crazy guy,
but you see, oh yeah, there was a youthful energy there, and
he was a kid and a teenagerand a young adult like everybody else.
And it's part of the course thatyou know you're gonna make the odd mistake

(29:59):
or do something that's a little wild, not necessarily insane, but you know,
I didn't quite see that coming fromyou. So it was good to
see that you're right. You're right. I mean, just a glimpse into
their into their youth was fantastic. And I've made no made no secrets that
I loved Luan as a character.Maybe it was fantastic. M I loved

(30:19):
how Luanne was the glue holding thiswhole thing together. You know, she's
the way that comes from the brokenhome, from the from the damaged household,
but she needs this unit to work. She liked this is her sort
of like her last chance at havinga solid sort of lifestyle, basically family
unit. Yeah, so she's like, you guys have to fix this because

(30:40):
I need you. And I lovethat sort of how they threw that element
in there as well, where Luanneshe's the one that's supposed to have come
from, like the trashy lifestyle.I think maybe even Peggy Eli in the
episode references her being coming from atrashy lifestyle. Earlier in the episode she
got she says trashy. I thinkshe wasn't implying that Luanne was trashy,
but Luan took it that way.But I just love the way that Luan
was a character that was the onethat sort of said get your shit together,

(31:02):
we have to we have to endthis now. And I really like
that little twist of the episode.Yeah. Look, as always throughout the
season and throughout the show, youknow, just great work by Brittany Murphy,
you know, an actor that Ithink we both just adore. It
just does great work across the board. Yeah, there was she was great.
But there was just a lot oflovely stuff in this I mean a

(31:25):
lot of good Bobby stuff. Andthere's the fact that he's sort of smoking
the European way, which Hank justtakes complete um, just like European Nazis.
That's why you're smoking like a Nazi, holding a cigarette between like between
three fingers and holding it like andthen it's spoken that the sausage at breakfast,

(31:48):
stubbing it out, that was agreat so much good Bobby stuff,
and just the secrecy of Hank andPeggy keeping it from Bobby where they've got
like the cigarette in the bathroom they'regoing back and forth having a bit of
fun with it as well. That'ssomething that struck me as weird. I
mean, not not necessarily weird forthe show, but I mean I used
to smoke and now I don't,but I can. You know, you

(32:10):
can just smell it, even ifsomeone has walked past the smoke. It's
like you walk past the smoke,it didn't you. Yeah, I mean
I'm wondering how people keep it secret. Shouldn't have these guys kept it secret?
But yeah, anyway, yes,all right, So now it's down
to our number one. So yournumber two was which one was your number
two? My number two was westySide. Number two was square Peg.

(32:31):
So I've already covered those, Sonow it is time for the big number
one. Guy. Hit me withyour number one of season one of Keith
Hill. My number one the Shinsof the Father, My number one,
Shins at the Father. Who knew? I was like, which episode did
I laugh the most? And itwas this one by a long margin?
Absolutely what I mean? I rememberI was doing this episode, doing the

(32:52):
Shins of the Father episode of SomeSavages. How we thought it was hilarious,
How we thought it was horrible?Yeah, um, and how we
thought it was actually very heartwarming?Yes as well. Yeah, I've Cotton
Hill. I never realized he's sucha complex character and there's so much to
delve into it. We haven't doneyet you know what I mean, like

(33:13):
that relationship between Cotton and Hank.Already mentioned it a couple of times in
this review here of the first season, where Hanks like, well, my
father taught me this way, andlike he's such a deplorable human being,
but you know, but you knowthere's a good guy in there somewhere,
and I get I'd go to thatmoment in the episode where my heart started
racing where what was his partner name? What it was? It wasn't it?

(33:37):
Basically the one from Hanks High DD Yes D where she says something,
he goes what and I was like, oh shit, like and it
felt like like domestic abuse was aboutto happen, and it was just because
he didn't you couldn't hear properly andhe calls her like sweetems or something.
I was like, so there's anice guy there somewhere, you know what
I mean, Like like this isall a charade, you know, like
he's probably is horrible, but it'salso there's a charade there as well,

(34:00):
and just that they're sort of epitomizedwhere you expected him to be this horrible
husband, but in actuality he wasactually being nice. He just couldn't hear
properly, one can only assume thatCotton's father was even worse. Yes,
yeah, that's gradually getting less andless. Yeah, it's like an echo.
I mean, somewhere down the lights, somewhere down the hill family timeline,

(34:22):
someone shouted and yeah, you've gotecho, echo, Echo, And
by the time you know, Bobby'sgrandson has probably just gonna be the most
enlightened zoomer. He's going to bethe guy from the pilot, He's going
to be the child Services it's gonnabe what was his name, Anthony Nice
something like that. Oh no,no, no, it wasn't it.

(34:46):
I don't think it was Anthony.Yeah, because there was a guy who
brought him a coffee. That's theguy. It's the name I'm thinking of,
Kevin or something. I don't know. He's like thank you, yeah,
yeah, but yeah, but Shin'sare the father. Such a great
episode. Just I love seeing hanksjourney in this episode because he's sort of,
as we said, we've touched onseeing Hank the way he was taught
things about the past, but herewe sort of see why Hank is the

(35:07):
way he is and why he keepsgoing back to that because it's almost like
he feels like he needs his father'sapproval. Still he's almost afraid of cotton.
But by the end of this herealizes, wait a minute, no,
no, Bobby and Peggy are waymore important than their needs and there
once and should be putting them aheadof dad. But I can relate to
that, like as a as akid, as a son, you don't
want to disappoint your dad, doyou. Oh? Absolutely not. No.

(35:29):
I mean he is, you know, your primary representation of manhood and
masculinity, and you know, Imean that's who you want to emulate,
That's who you want to You wantto be like them, and you want
to impress them in most cases,in my own most cases certainly. Yeah.
But for Hank to stand up tohis dad and you in favor of

(35:49):
his son, especially his wife,I think, is you know, just
marvelous. Yeah, it's it's soit's real. It's a real stand up
and cheer moments like good for you, man, and just that the whole
way. He plays up his shinsas well, look at my shins.

(36:09):
Yeah, he's just he's a patheticman. But also, you know,
just kind of fascinating in a way. Like a bit of Cobra's is fascinating.
It's like, you're so terrible,but I can't look away from here.
I can't get away from you.I mean, he's just so blatant
in his sexism and his misanthropy andall that kind of stuff. I mean,

(36:29):
but funny with it. I gotthis gap. Both lefties both left.
What did he say? What doyou think her Muma's new tatters?
Both left? But for me,honestly, the moment of the season is
that hey, hey baby, Nowdidn't say hey baby? What does he
say? Hey? Whatever? Heyspank on the ass? How about some

(36:51):
sandwiches? That is like fucking thatis the greatest. And I laughed because
I showed Nicola, and Nicola burstout laughing as well. So I just
needed nicholas approval. I like,it's okay to laugh at this, right,
yep? Good, okay, cool? Yeah. Shin's of the Father
was a fantastic episode. And look, we've gone on a bad Colton a

(37:12):
lot and justifiably so. Major, major, major shout out to Toby huss
a fantastic well, fantastic actor ingeneral with a very very good voice actor
um doing this role, doing canI'm pretty sure he doesn't. Can yeah,
can Yeah, I can cancel withthat Gazarius style. But even I
just I'm looking through my notes forit and goes, oh my god,

(37:32):
this is the one where Bobby hitcheshis pants. What are you talking about?
What are you talking about? Getsin the load of baber gun for
his The bb gle was just aloaded gun. I can't remember anyway,
it was like a loaded shotgun. It's a loaded gun. Yeah, yeah,

(37:53):
she's the father. I'm both. It's sort of like a silver approval.
We both got it as number onebecause it just was the best the
episode of the season in my opinion, by not a long long margin,
but it was just as the clearfavorite. It really was. Yeah,
And then just talking about it now, I'm recalling how we talked about it
when we reviewed it and how muchwe how much we got out of it
on so many levels unexpectedly, justI didn't think it was going to be

(38:15):
that funny. I was like, this guy seemed like a bad, a
horrible human being. Is there reallymuch you can do with this character?
And then I'm just like, holyshit, this is the best they did.
They really mind a lot out ofthis guy, Yeah, we really
enjoyed that episode, but we reallyenjoyed this season, I think, yeah
we did. Indeed. Yeah.I honestly going to this show, I
didn't know what to expect. Ialways saw this show as being the boring

(38:37):
version of The Simpsons as a kid, and it just surprised me. One
of the main reasons I wanted todo this podcast was I was like,
how often can you go twenty sixyears without seeing an episode of a show
you know that it was as bigas what King of the Hill was,
right, I thought, what aperfect opportunity to do a podcast where we're
essentially watching it for the first time. And I hope you guys are enjoying

(38:58):
that aspect because there many other Kingof the Hill podcast out there as well
that I recommend you guys check out, but they're all fans of the show.
I think this is the only Kingof the Hill podcast where you're essentially
watching it as if or listening toit as if you're listening to fans watching
it for the first time in nineteeneventy seven. I think that's a sort
of a real unique trait. It'ssomething I really enjoyed doing as well,
because all the other shows that wecover on four Finger Discount on the network,
shows that I love. This isthe show that I've never seen before,

(39:20):
and I'm kind of doing that withFriends, but I've seen. I
know what happens in Friends. Iknow absolutely nothing that happens in the King
of the Hill. And I'm soexcited as a result of that. I
think if you're a human being duringthe nineties, you'd be aware of Friends,
and yeah, I would sort ofseeped into you. Just by thirty
of how big it was, Kingof the Hill sort of went under the
radar, especially in Australia anyway.Yeah, certainly in Australia. Yeah,

(39:42):
But for us to be exploring it, you know, after so long,
Yeah, I think it gives usa fresh perspective and it's one that I'm
really happy to continue exploring. So, as you said, we'll be doing
season two of Speaking of the Hill, Yes, sometime down the line.
