L'impero bizantino, anche noto come Impero romano d'Oriente, fu uno stato che si sviluppò nell'Europa orientale e nell'Asia occidentale a partire dalla caduta dell'Impero romano d'Occidente nel 476 d.C. e durò fino alla caduta di Costantinopoli nel 1453 d.C.
L'impero bizantino ebbe la sua capitale a Costantinopoli (l'odierna Istanbul in Turchia) e fu governato da una successione di imperatori che si basavano sulla tradizione romana. L'impero fu caratterizzato da una forte presenza militare, da una burocrazia altamente organizzata e da una cultura che era una sintesi di elementi romani, greci e cristiani.
