Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's up at Saint Pierre from ninety three point one WPOC.
I'm a big fan of the Washington Spirit. They are
the NWSL team in Washington, DC. I've had so much
fun going to a few games over the last couple
of years. My wife and daughter come with me and
it's just a blast. And last season it was just
incredible watching the new talent that the Spirit had drafted
(00:22):
and we're working into the fold, especially Croy Bethune. I mean,
this girl, she came out like a rocket. I mean
it was unreal watching what she was able to do
on that field. In her rookie season. She played I
think was at seventeen games in her rookie season and
she tied an NWSL record for assists. And she was
so good in those seventeen games that even though she
(00:44):
got injured and missed the last two months of the season,
she still won the Rookie of the Year award I
think the Midfielder of the Year award as well. She
missed the last two months of the season and she
still was an award winner at the end of the year.
That's how good she was. Now Croy is still rehabbing
that injury right now, but it looks like she's poised
to get back on the field here soon and I
(01:05):
can't wait. I cannot wait. Can you imagine what the
Washington Spirit are going to look like when Trinity Robbin
is fully healthy, When hal hirsch Felt is fully healthy,
and Kroy Bethune is back on that field. This team
is going to be unstoppable. It's going to be remarkable
to watch. Croy gave me a call to chat about
the injury and the recovery and all that, what it's
like to play in Washington, and what's coming up with
(01:26):
their next couple of games. So please enjoy my conversation
with Croy Bethune. Hello, I'm great. How are you doing
pretty good?
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Good?
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Thank you for your time today. I appreciate you, Croy.
I won't keep you for too long, but I got
a few questions for you. One of them, I do
want to ask you about your name. Croy is such
a beautiful name, and I'm just curious kind of where
that came from. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Well, my last name is French, so my parents, well,
at least this is a story they told me.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
I asked, but they wanted to give a French first.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Name and middle name, so I guess Kroy was the
name they came up with, and yeah, it just kind
of it flows.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
I actually thought you were born in France at first, like,
given how French the name was, and my last name
is Saint Pierre's, so I get the French names. But
I was just like, man, she must be French. I
was like, nope, Georgia.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
A lot of people think I'm like French or a
lot of people have been thinking that I'm patient and
I'm like, nope, I'm American. I just have French names.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Well, I love it. We can dive back into soccer.
But I want to ask you how the injury recovery
is coming in, if you have maybe an estimated timetable
when we get to see you.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Yeah, the injury's going pretty well. I feel strong. I
haven't had any pain for a while, so that's great.
Just really increasing with training and just trying to stay patient.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
I could give you a timeline, but I don't want
that to be wrong, so hopefully within the next two
to three weeks.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
But yeah, I imagine it's got to be hard for
you to sitting on the sidelines watching your team play,
but at the same time, watching them play so well
right now must be a little comforting knowing that they're
still you know, kicking butt without you right now, that
you're like, okay, I can take my time and get
this injury like fully healed.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
It's hard to not be out there, of course when
you love the sport because you want to play.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
But I mean, I trust my teammates. They they played.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Amazing at the end of the season last year, and
we have some new pickups this year that are amazing
as well. So just staying patient seeing how we're playing
and trying to analyze off the field, so when I
get the opportunity to get that out there, I know
what to do.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Patience has got to be one of the hard things,
I think, especially too with how you know how fast
you came out of the gate last year and just
we're an immediate impact on that team, you know. Tying
an NWSL record in what seventeen games, I think it
was just you've got to be sitting back there looking
at it being like, oh my gosh, like I just
cannot wait.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Yeah, for sure, anxious, especially not being able to break
the record. Tying it's pretty cool, but yeah, it's a
long season, and.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
I wonder too if that is sort of a good thing. Look,
being injured is never a good thing. But I was
talking to how Hirst felt the other day. You've got
a few key injuries right now. I know Trinity is
working back from one. How's got one that she's nursing
right now and trying to get back, and then you've
got you. That's three top players on the Spirit that
are injured now. And I'm kind of hoping that maybe
the injury bug is already behind you guys. You know,
(04:29):
so the rest of the season, when y'all are back,
it's just going to be full speed ahead for the Spirit.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Yeah, of course, we want to be healthy throughout the
whole season, and you want to start off strong, which
we still are doing. But just trying to think of
the bright side of things. It's a long season, like
I mentioned before, So if we are healthy at the
end of the season, I mean, that's when it really counts,
making playoffs, winning the championship, that's when it really counts.
(04:56):
So if we can all be there at the end,
you know, it'll be worth it.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
I love the dog, by the way, mine usually is
like sitting on my feet making all kinds of noise too.
But I locked her out today. Sorry, she's like scratching
at my door. I get it. I understand the situation
that's going on. Gotta look at your rookie class too,
which has just been amazing for the team, between you
and Hall and I mean just like the way that
you guys came in and really had an immediate impact.
(05:23):
Like the team I think won ten games collectively in
the two seasons before you guys arrived, and all of
a sudden it was like eighteen wins last year. I mean,
what an amazing impact y'all had right out of the gate.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah, start off strong, finished strong, honestly, and we have
a lot of new talent. I mean, we were great
last year, but I'd say we're even better this year.
With death from my roomy and Rebay and the back, like,
we have a lot of options and I'd say we're
a lot more versatile on our benches, a lot has
more death.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
So just starting off strong, you finished strong as well.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
And also playing in DC is just a whole different
ballgame too. I mean, the whole field advantage I'll have
with the Spirit is unreal.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Yeah, it's insane.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
I saw a video and they asked which stadium do
you hate to play in the most, And I feel
like a lot of people said us, just because Audi
is so rowdy, spear fans, they show out for us.
It's amazing, Like we love it personally.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
I love putting on a show for people, and the
more people that are there, the more fun it is.
So we just want them to continue showing love for us.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
I feel so lucky to have been at the home
opener this year, which unfortunately resulted in a loss, but
still just a great vibe in the stands. But also
at that playoff game last year, the semi final match
that went to the Pks and Kingsbury just coming up huge.
I mean, I could feel the stadium like moving. The
crowd was so insane. It was just I've never experienced
(06:49):
something like that at a sporting event before.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Yeah, I got the chills sitting there watching the game.
It didn't seem real in the moment being there, but
it's amazing.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Talking about it. I'm getting the chills right now. So
coming up next to Louisville, I know Louisville's not off
to you as hot of a start as you all
have been, But how are you feeling about this coming match.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
I feel like we're ready.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
We have this weekend off, of course, but a lot
of our players are gone with national teams, so hopefully
they aren't too drained when they come back. But you
can't take a team for granted. Yeah, they might not
start it off great, but respect the opponent and just prepare.
That's what we're doing this week, and we have a
lot extra time next week since this one's off, so
(07:33):
I think I think we'll come out swinging with Louiso.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
With the NCAA tournament going on. For basketball, you hear
the phrase trap game a lot where you have They
talk about teams that might overlook their opponent, thinking about
who's coming next. And you've got Orlando on the schedule
after Louisville. Are you guys even considering that now or
are you just like, no, Louisville's next, and then we'll
worry about Orlando.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah, no, just taking a game by game.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
If you focus on Orlando, then you're not focusing on
what's in front of you. You might think Louisville's an
easy opponent, but you have to get through the game
to focus on the next game.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Perfect well, Kroix, listen, thank you so much for your time.
I wish you the best on the recovery and I
can't wait to see you back on the field this year.
And I'm going to be at a few more games
down there at Audi and I'm just so excited to
be cheering you on.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Thank you so much, thanks for having me
