Speaker 1 (00:01):
Yes, for all of our Melbourne listeners. Oz Comic Con
is back this weekend at Jeff Shed and Harley and
I are going to take a little bit of a
deep dive now into the guests that are at this
year's oz Comic Con. So, Harley, there's a few here
straight away that I know that you're going to be
very interested in. Let's start with Katherine Tate. Where is
(00:25):
your interest with Catherine Tate?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
I love It's funny because I was just thinking the
other day about the Catherine Tate Show, some of the
characters she would do. I think we need more of that,
Like I know, these days is all this kind of
you know, things like we can't do that, we can't
say that, we can't you can't do that on television.
(00:50):
There's an old show. But she was so good the
way she creates these characters. But especially for me playing
Donna Noble in Doctor Who, so good. I want to
see her again in the show. But yeah, that would
be an absolute highlight.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
It's kind of interesting that you say that as well,
because yesterday the news was announced in Britain that, of course,
none of the networks will ever screen Little Britain again,
and of course, Catherine Tate used to get was a
guest star on that show quite often. But yeah, it's
interesting that we're at that point now where not only
(01:33):
are we burning books, but where banning television shows from
ever reappearing as well. So but yeah, I'm excited to
see Catherine Tate as well because I have actually seen
her speak before, and she is someone who is is
very open. I've noticed that with some guests from Doctor Who.
(01:54):
They're very protective of the show and if somebody asks
a question that's a little bit negative, they kind of
avoid it. But I have to say Catherine Tate and
Christopher eccleston were the two Doctor Who people that I've
seen that that were just brutally honest, like so, I'm
expecting that she'll be there. She'll be like that again, Yeah,
(02:17):
I know.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
I think she's always someone who's going to be fun
and just so full of personality whenever you see her
own stuff. So yeah, I think if anyone's thinking of
going down, you have to see Catherine.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
The other one I know that you're really excited about
is Renee O'Connor, who, of course most people will remember
as Gabrielle from Xena Warrior Princess and also Hercules. She
made that little crossover a few times to the Hercules
set as well. So tell us a little bit about
why you're excited to see Renee O'Connor.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Well, you basically just put your finger on it. I
loved Zena so much. I mean, you know, I loved
Hercules when it started, but that really went down kind
of the goofy comedy angle, whereas Zena had this really
compelling drama to it, and just following that story, I
(03:15):
was just hooked on the story of Xena and Gabrielle
and yeah two kind of see either of those guys
in the flesh would be quite amazing, Like, I'm sure
they have stories to tell, and yeah, and that's you know,
who doesn't love Seena. Come on, if you haven't ever
(03:35):
seen Xena, you're missing out. You've got to watch that
show definitely.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
And she's been doing a lot of theater as well
recently as well, so it'd be interesting to hear her
talk about that, and actually started her own theater company
called House of Bard's Theater Company just a few years ago,
so I'll be interesting to chat to her about theater
as well, because that's one of the things I love
about comic cons is that an artist might be there
(04:03):
to talk about has been invited because they're in like
a big sci fi show or one really big pop
culture show, but they'll talk about other stuff as well,
Like they'll talk about how they got there and different things,
and what they do, what they've done outside of that,
and how their big pop culture show has compared to
(04:25):
being on the other shows that they're on, and stuff
like that. So I guess that's one of the reasons
why I love going along to conventions like this.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah. Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Now some of the other guests that you can go
along and see. One of my favorites that I've had
the pleasure of going along and seeing a few times
now Emily d Raven, the Australian actress. She is one
of those people that loves talking about her other stuff
because of course when she goes to these conventions, everybody
just loves to talk to her about Roswell and Lost
(04:59):
and Once upon a Time. But she started out in
Beast Master. Do you remember that.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Show, Halle, Yeah, that's quite a fun one. Every so
often it comes up and I'm like, oh, I should
really go back and see that. Full thing, because I
would only have to catch these sort of like sporadic episodes.
And yeah, I think there's something I would just like
to I don't think it ever finished properly though, did it?
(05:27):
I can't remember.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
No, I don't think so. But the good thing about
going along and talking to Emily is she's done a
lot of films outside of that work as well, and
I love to be that person that asks about a
film that most people haven't seen but they loved them
talking about it. Of course, she was the star of
the remake of The Hills Have Eyes. She did the
(05:48):
little indie film called Brick, which I absolutely love.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Great.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Yeah, she's done a few ossy horror films, and she
also did a kind of indie film with Robert Patterson
a few years ago as well, which I asked her
about at one of these conventions and she said it
was actually her favorite project that she's ever worked on,
because she said it was such an interesting character to play.
(06:13):
Now we've also got ging and Carlo as Posito coming
along as well, Like no doubt, he's there to talk
about Breaking Bad, and of course the spin off of
Breaking Bad is all better Call Saul, but he's also done.
He's another actor that I'm sure we'll want to talk
about his role in the Maye Runner series, which I
(06:36):
still feel is one of the I actually liked the
Mayze Runner better than Hunger Games, but for some reason.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
It's I cannot watch Hunger Games at all. May's Runner
was brilliant, Like, yeah, that I can happily watch that again.
I think I did go through the movies a few
months back. They were there, and I'm like, you know what,
I'm gonna sit through all these again, and I just
love them. There's something about those They work so well.
(07:07):
You get so kind of hooked in on the characters
and what's going on, you know. And I love gen
Carlo Esposito as well as an actor. He's been appearing
in good stuff. You know, he's made his Star Wars appearances,
so you know, fans of Star Wars will want to
(07:28):
go and catch him. But also there's a series of
Netflix called The Residents, and well he's basically the murder
victim in that one. So most of most of his
appearances in flashback. But it's a really good show. Like
I'm kind of used to seeing him a lot of
the time in a bad guy type role. It's just
(07:50):
it's it's ingrained in my memory, so when he's not
the bad guy for a changage, it's nice. Yeah, and
I thought that was really good.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Yeah. I want to ask him about another news series
that he's in as well. In fact, it's a new film.
It's a Bong Ju and Hoe's brand new movie called Okia,
which he stars in alongside Jake Gillenhall and Tilda Swinton.
I really want to talk to him about that because
I love Bongdong Hoo's movies and I'm really really keen
(08:20):
to try and find out more about this, and I'm
sure i'll probably get told I can't really talk about
that because it's not out yet. But you never know
until you ask the question. Of course, for all the
people out there that that love anime and love animation,
there are a lot of big name voiceover artists coming
(08:40):
as well. Ratana is going to be there, Zacha Guilder
is going to be there, Leila Brazens. It is an
absolutely amazing Brandon Rodgers. Now, I have to admit I
haven't watched any of the shows that Brandon Rodgers' voices,
but I know he is one of the biggest stars
that's going to be there this time around. So my
(09:00):
suggestion would be for oz Comic Con get online and
buy your tickets beforehand because they are expecting it to
sell out this year like it does other years as well.
It is on this weekend at jeff Shed in Melbourne,
so just make sure you get your tickets before you
get there, because I have seen over the last few
years some very disappointed people that have cosplayed dressed up,
(09:25):
got there and then found out, sorry, you can't buy
tickets at the door because it's sold out, so make.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Sure you Yes, that happened to me a few years ago,
so it's a very real danger. Like we were a
little bit surprised, but I thought, okay, yep, it's really
picked up.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
I think people think that oz Comic Con can take
as many people coming in a Super and Ova, but
they need to remember that Super and Over is at
the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, a lot bigger area. Oz Comic
Con is inside Jeff's Shed, where there is a cap
on how many tickets can be sold. So yeah, just
be aware of that if you're going to head along,
and of course the Artist Gallery will be there as well.
(10:06):
There's some amazing artists, comic book artists who are going
to be there as well. There is a huge cosplay
competition this time around, but yeah, I know for the
comic book artists, Cyanide and Happiness, the team is going
to be there. Alex Trewski, who is very big with
the Phantom Comics, is going to be there, Andie Spice
(10:30):
is going to be there. Christophe Bogax, Daniel Reid is
going to be there talking about his Evermore series and
one of my favorites Dean Rankin, who of course is
known for his artistry with The Simpsons, He's going to
be there as well. So head along to OZ Comic
Con this weekend in Melbourne. It's going to be a
lot of fun, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Harley absolutely
