Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well, listen as we are continuing our look at Melbourne
International Comedy Festival shows. Right now, we're going to take
a look now at a show called Endgame, which has
been put together by Katie Redd and Clancy. And Katie
is actually on the phone right now to chat to
us a little bit about Endgame. So welcome to the program.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Katie, thanks so much for having me. I really appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
No worry. So Katie, tell us a little bit about Endgame.
This is a comedy show with a little bit of
a difference, So tell us a little bit about this
show and how it's all come together.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah. Sure.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
So Endgame is a theater slash character comedy slash character
cabaret show which is about a cabaret performer's soul review.
So when she dies, she goes up to heaven and
she watches a review of her life and she thinks
she's done to every Well turns out not so much.

(00:55):
So Yes, it's about spirituality and love and purpose because
she's actually really concentrating on them. Another woman, because she
watches her soul review and she thinks it's going to
be all about her, but turns out it's actually about
another woman. Called Eva, and so it's her investigation into
you know, why is this person in my review?

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Okay, so what sparked this show for you? Was there
something that happened that made you start thinking about this
and how did you put it together?

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Well, I, I guess originally I wrote the show. So
I've been writing the show for about four years. And
originally I wrote it with the because it's it's got
some quantum physics in there, so it's inter parallel world
and this kind of feel, and I was just writing
it about that, and then I was being really fascinated

(01:47):
with the spiritual world, and I've done tons and tons
of research and read tons of books about this, and
then I kept hearing this or kept you know, reading
and finding out about soul reviews, which is apparently what happens,
you know, when we all get to the afterlife. The
first thing that happens is we watch a video about
our life, and it's about the impact we've had on people,
not successes. It doesn't matter you know, what you've done

(02:08):
in life in awards or accolades or how much money
you've made, but it's really about the impact you've made.
And I just thought, God, what an incredible way to
view your life and reflect on it. So so yeah,
so that's been a huge influence. And then it's based
on my grandmother, Joan Readin, and she was an incredible
singer and then she became a theatrical agent and she

(02:31):
gave me various bits of advice in her life and
we're extremely close and I've just always remembered it, and yeah,
that there were so many different ways that my journey
in life could have gone depending on how I took
the advice. And so that's basically what the show's about.
So yeah, she's influenced it massively. Although she's up in
the spirit world, I do sort of definitely feel as

(02:53):
if she's, well, she's booked, because I keep saying, right,
you know, because I call her mag Granny, keep saying right,
mag Granny, you're.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
On, You're on in this show.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
And it's it's funny because people say in the spiritual
world that when you see a feather or you see
something float like that, it's an angel with you or
its spirits with you. And there sometimes there's a really
really poignant bit in the show where I'm playing the
piano and I am singing to a spirit and I'm
always thinking of her, and sometimes I do actually see

(03:22):
something fly in front of me, like a feather, and
it's happened. It's happened five times now because I've just
done Adelaide Fringe and it's happened twice in Melbourne. So yeah,
it's incredible. When do you get more in tune with it?

Speaker 2 (03:34):
I guess.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
I guess they're aware of what I'm doing. You know,
if all this is true, I am on the right
path with this. This shown that then I feel as
if they're supporting it. So yeah, is that what you're
expecting to answer?

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Well?

Speaker 1 (03:48):
I have to ask now as well, how is doing
this show affected you personally? Like, because not only are
you playing a character that's based on your grandmother, but
only when you've been working on this show you've started
to think about your own mortality and what it will
be like when we all go to the afterlife? Have

(04:09):
you had deep thoughts while you've been working on this show?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Such a good question. I have massively. Yes. I mean
to be honest, it's taken the pressure off, the pressure off.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
There's lots of things I want to do in this life,
and it's taken the pressure off will I achieve them,
because I just know that my soul has chosen to
come down here to learn some lessons and I'm not
in charge of that.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
The universe is in charge of that.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
My soul is in charge of that, and my ego
or you know, my logical brain might want certain things
in my life and if they're not happening, they're not
happening for a reason, and.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
I have to look at that.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
And so yeah, it's really it's really made me trust
in the universe, and especially when you're doing, you know,
taking huge financial risks and creative risks like this, you know,
being an artist over in England and producing everything myself
and writing it myself, and I've an incredible, amazing team,
you know, but they're not cheap. So just just taking

(05:05):
this big risk, I just have to trust and just
know that I'm meant to do this. And I have
had in the research process. I was just very interested.
So I've been to lots of mediums and had readings
and they all seem to say the same thing, which is,
you are meant to something about my Mercury and north
Node or something something about that You're meant to be
working on my own in the performing space, and I'm

(05:27):
fascinated with spirituality, and I didn't tell them anything I thought, right,
So a solo show about the spiritual.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
World is probably bang on them.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
So yes, I kind of I feel as if I'm
on the right path with this, and I just, yeah,
I just hope that that, Yeah, it takes me to
where I where I'm meant to be.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
While you were doing that research for the show, was
there anything that you learn't that really stored out to
you or has stayed with you.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Yes, a lot. So I read these incredible books. One
is Journey of Souls and one is The Afterlife, and
they're both written by philosophers, well that they were sort
of being philosophers, but they're actually professors and they were
hypnotherapists and they were trying to prove that the spirit
world did not exist, and they were just trying to

(06:15):
look after their clients by putting them under hypnosis to
treat various things. And it's following the lines of Dolores Cannon,
which some people may know, but actually, if you hypnotize
people deep enough, you can they start talking about past lives.
And then if you hypnotize them even deeper, you get
to the soul level where they all talk about the

(06:36):
spirit world, which is the soul.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
The souls, our soul's home.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
And we all go back to the same place each time,
and then we know heal and then come back again.
And I found this absolutely fascinating, and especially as these
people were trying to disprove it, but then they just had,
so they put so many people under hypnosis and they
were getting the same information back about what the spirit

(07:02):
world is like. And I didn't know really how it's
all structured. And apparently what was really interesting to me
is it's just a different dimension. So it's just a
sphere around the Earth, and we are just not in tune.
Our brains are not in tune to feel it and
see it, but it's all around us. And then there

(07:23):
are different realms, which is fascinating because I was like, yeah,
well what happens after that? And there's sort of the
realm around when people first, you know, when the soul
first leaves the planet Earth, and then they go up
there and then they recover and they rejuvenate and they
learn their lessons and stuff, and then there's different as
we progress as souls and as we evolve, we then
don't come down to what they called Earth's School and

(07:46):
learn our lessons because their soul has evolved so much.
They go up to levels of where they're just pure
color or they're just pure light, and then they get
back to the end game, which is they are part
of the universe, which is I mean, it's quite astonishing
they as they say in all these books, our brain
cannot compute what that is, but it seems fascinating. And
it also seems fascinating that our brains with tele telecommunication,

(08:11):
which is probably now coming a bit more into lepathy
and that kind of thing. I don't know what, but
the Egyptians knew much more than we did about sound
therapy and uh, past lives and connecting with spirit world,
and I don't know what happened, but I don't know
where our brains stopped doing all of that. But I
think it's coming back as meant to be a spiritual

(08:32):
awakening now and we're all meant to be getting much
more in tune with all of this. So yeah, I
think science is really catching up with where the spirit
world has been.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
For a while.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
Yeah, Past lives have always been something that has fascinated
me because I've had some experiences in my life where
I have been to places that I've never been before.
But not only do I get that feeling of I
have been here before even though I haven't in this lifetime,
but I'll also know where things are or or yeah,

(09:02):
it's happened a few times in my life. I've also
seen photos of people from the past and had you
know how you have that instant kind of recognition or
that such and such. I've had that as well, and
it's always been something that's fascinated me because it's always
been in cities outside of Australia where I've had that

(09:24):
feeling where I've been here before and I'll know where
a certain thing is or something like that. It's a very,
very weird feeling.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
That's incredible.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Yes, I've one hundred percent big believer in that, and weirdly,
Melbourne is somewhere that I really felt like that when
I first came to live here in twenty twelve and
I just thought, no, I just feel as if I
feel at home here and I know that I've lived
here before, and I've had a few past life regressions
and they said that I've had a few lives in Australia.
Apparently I've had something like I think it's something between

(09:57):
thirty six and forty two. Past lives back quite a
lot to Egyptian times as well, and there's a particular
there's a particular person in my life that I've had
a lot of lifetimes with and I've been married to
him in various various lives and it's it's quite astonishing,
and that is it's quite interesting because that relationship for

(10:20):
me has brought up some really big things to do
with what it means to be a woman and happiness.
You know, what's the role of a woman in this
day and age and how can a woman be happy?
And it's it's very interesting that that tracks back to,
you know, sort of Egyptian lives when when females weren't
appreciated in that way, you know, there were more people

(10:44):
who were well it was the patriarchy was was you know,
at its height then as well, so they weren't appreciated
and they were more people for breeding and looking after
the home, and they weren't they weren't appreciated for their
for their mind and what they could contribute contribute towards
society as much so it's just really interesting when you
start finding out the connections that you've had and therefore,

(11:07):
why is this person still in my life or why
is this person coming back in my life? Oh, I
haven't learned that lesson that they've been trying to teach
me in various lives.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Yeah, it is. It is such a fascinating thing and
it's something that I'm sure a lot of people will
actually take away from your show and learn from. What
are you hoping that people will take away from the
show after they've after they've watched the endgame?

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Well, people are reacting very differently.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
So sometimes it's full of laughter and I'm like, oh right, great,
and then sometimes it's really really quiet and I'm thinking,
oh my god, they hate it. But then I've realized
that was when I was first started in Adelaide, and
then I've done a few shows like that in Melbourne.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
I'm thinking, oh my god, they're not laughing. I'm in
Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Oh god, it's not translating through to British humor.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
And then actually at the end.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
That you know, I stand outside and say thank you
to everyone for coming, and there was people just said
I was in floods at Tears. I was just absolutely
flawed by your themes. And there are big themes in there,
and you know, if you're personally if you've been personally
affected by them, you will be kind of They just
said they were glued to their.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Seats and they were really in the drama of it.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
And and I don't know which way the audience are
going to go until I say my few jokes, and
if they're quiet, I just know that they're right.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
They're in it. They're sort of fascinated in this, and
I can't take it personally that they're not laughing.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
Well, that sends me off my rhythm a bit, and
I'm like, okay, I just have, you know, the awkward
thing of at least it's not stand up but yeah,
it's quite funny. But then when they laugh then I'm
also like, oh they're laughing. Now I have to wait
a bit. Okay, now I'm off again.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
So I never quite know how it's going to go,
but I would like them to.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
What I've found is that they've they've all said that
they've left really reflective and really thinking about them life choices,
because it's a really big theme about what is your
life choice and you know what if you've made different choices,
how'd it have gone? And so they've all been really reflective.
And actually some people have come back two or three
times to watch the show again and they've all come

(13:13):
out with something different. And my tech who saw it
for well two weeks, he said, Katie, I got something
out of it each night. He said, it's very Christopher
Nolan as in, you know, there's always something that I'm
taking out of it that I wasn't expecting. A different
narrative because there's so many layers of narrative you really
need to be concentrating. So so yeah, I think people
are reflective and also hopefully they've said they'd be really

(13:36):
conscious about what the signs of the universe are giving them.
You know, if there's a door that's constantly shutting in
their life, it's like, well you need to look, but
that's the universe going nope, move on, move into a
different direction. Or if something's you know, beckoning them, they
keep thinking about, you know, going to Europe or going
to Australia or England or going somewhere. As you said,
you know, perhaps it's a past life calling them that

(13:57):
they're meant to go and explore that so that they're
listening to the signs, so they feel much more in
tune with the universe of signs, I think, which is wonderful.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
Definitely. Now for all of our listeners out there, if
you do want to head along and check out Endgame,

times on each of those dates. I guess to finish off, Katie,
what would you like to say to people out there

(14:48):
who are thinking about heading along and checking out Endgame.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
I'd just like to say thank you if you're thinking
of coming along. It's really amazing when you are an
emergen artists and you're trying some very experimental, big bold
work when people come along and they've just you know,
taken a punt on you. And there's so many incredible
artists here to enjoy and I appreciate that. You know

(15:15):
that the world is finding that the money's tight, and
so when they come and spend their hard and cash
with me and come and support me, it means.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
The absolute world.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
So yes, it's you know, thank you for supporting emerging
artists and new writing as well.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Definitely now, once again, listeners, if you do want to
head along and check out Endgame. It is on right
